Attention Farmers

Problems with Iron and Manganese?

Federated Farmers’ Local Government spokesperson, Katie Milne, said it was vitally important that they got good candidates to put themselves forward. “Being a councillor is a challenging role but farmers can make a real difference on councils as they can inform and educate their colleagues and staff about what happens on-farm. This is crucial for getting sensible, workable outcomes,” said Ms Milne. The way local government is funded through property value based rates, has a big impact on farms’ financial viability. “The average farm now pays well over $10,000 per year in rates which are often in the top ten farm expenses,” she says. “As a fixed cost there is no way for farms to cut back, short of selling up, during downturns like the current one in the dairy industry. “One of the most important council functions is to manage natural resources, including water, land and air. The development and implementation of regional plans and policies can and does have huge impacts on the way farms are run.” Farmers are also exposed to other council regulations like building and dog control — and bylaws for things like stock crossings and stock movement across and along roads. “Councils also provide infrastructure and services of

value for farmers and for the rest of the community. Roads are especially important for farms,” she says. Federated Farmers have launched their 2016 Local Government Manifesto. “The manifesto is a must read for anyone standing for council and not just for farmers. All aspiring candidates would do well to read a copy,” said Ms Milne. Nominations for the 2016 local authority elections closed at noon on Friday August 12. Voting papers will be posted out from Friday September 16 and they will need to be returned by noon on Saturday October 8.

Body score changes

3

In August there was a change to how Body Condition Score records are treated before they enter the Animal Evaluation system. The new process introduced more stringent limits on BCS data that flows into the AE system and will also allow multiple BCS records for an individual cow, rather than just one record per season. New Zealand Animal Evaluation Ltd manager Jeremy Bryant says the changes will mean a bull’s breeding value will more closely reflect the BCS genetics he is passing on to his daughters. The need for this change was uncovered during the AE Transition, an industry-led project which transfers the operation of the AE system from LIC’s Animal Evaluation Unit to DairyNZsubsidiary NZAEL. “This has created the chance to intensively review all aspects of data processing, looking for causes of any discrepancies between NZAEL and AEU’s evaluation results,” said Jeremy. “In this case NZAEL, in conjunction with LIC, identified an opportunity to enhance BCS data processing. “By implementing this as a part of the August AE run (released August 20 2016), farmers can make immediate use of improved breeding values.” The initial phases of the transition involved rewriting data processing methods to produce results very closely aligned to those currently produced by AEU. NZAEL’s animal evaluation system has now been tested for many months, running in parallel with AEU so the results can be directly compared. In a similar scenario, a revision to fertility

data processing was implemented in February this year. “The impact of this change will be small, with 95 per cent of dairy sires moving up or down less than $4 for breeding worth.” BCS breeding values are calculated using the BCS records of two-year-old cows in progeny test herds. Two-year-olds often receive more than one BCS record over the season — scored when they are inspected for ‘traits other than production’ and again when weighed for a live weight measure. The current pre-processing of BCS data only allows one record into the system. If a cow has multiple BCS records collected over the season, these are not included in AE. Some of the BCS records collected on-farm are very low or high (2.5 and lower, or 7.5 and greater) which may be indicative of ill health, data entry errors or special management of an animal. The current system does not exclude these outlier scores and so they are allowed to flow into the model. Dairy sires often have only small numbers of daughters scored for BCS and so one outlier (high or low BCS) can have a large impact on their overall evaluation. The new pre-processing method will utilise multiple records by producing an average of all the BCS data that is collected over the season. In addition to this, the validation of BCS records has been increased, so that very low and very high records will not enter the AE model.

FORWARD FARMING by Ayla Miller

Tim and Kelly Brittain are leading the way in the future of farming by embracing technology and the latest breeding programmes.

T

heir farm, Storth Oaks, is a 386 hectare hill country Angus stud just East of Otorohanga, calving 310 registered females every year for their bull sale held on the farm. “We sell 65 to 70 two-year-old Angus bulls. Our breeding programme aims to breed bulls which are going to make money for our commercial customers by putting the right genetics in their herd and are going to grow into premium beef carcasses.” Tim has been farming since 1980 and stud breeding for 25 years after

being involved by accident. “Part of the farm we had developed out of scrub and I was looking for more commercial cows to help with the tidying up of that new farmland. I went to a dispersal sale, bought 37 cattle and ended up carrying on their registration, starting a stud. “I was really captured by the interesting aspects of stud breeding. It’s quite a rewarding type of farming. You can see the improvement in the animals and you can make sure customers are getting good results from the bulls.”

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES August 2016

Over the years he has witnessed a number of changes to how New Zealanders are farming. “New technologies are changing the way we farm. If we keep on doing what we have always done we will go backwards. We have to be moving forward to be able to keep up with the rest of the world.” Tim is careful with his selections, concentrating on quality carcass characteristics such as marbling, easy calving and fast growth. “Consumers consistently say they want juiciness, tenderness and flavour in the best beef, and marbling is a key criteria in being able to do that. “On the farm we really try to use the latest technology to measure and record everything.” Tim uses a mating planning tool called Total Genetics Resource Management which allows him to restrict inbreeding and to pair the best cows with the best bulls to create the best carcasses. He also uses Genomics which is new technology in the cattle breeding industry and is taking off in the United States. “It is a new paradigm for beef. In the past there have been key things that have been milestones which have taken the industry forward, such as estimated breeding values, and when the industry moved from selling whole carcasses to boxed beef. Artificial insemination and embryo transfer was another. “This gives us the ability to select animals more accurately for particular outcomes.” Tim and Kelly can then advance their genetic process much

Tim and Kelly (centre) with customers, John Wood from Putaruru and his daughter Nikki Wood at a bull sale quicker than before as they can be sure they are keeping the right animals — removing the guesswork. “We put a lot of effort into the structural soundness and use a system called Beef Class. We have independent assessors who come in and make sure the animals are consistently classified. This means it’s subjective not objective and is being measured by a scoring system.” They have been using this system for a few years now. “Not all studs do it but we think it is the most accurate and unbiased way of assessing the structure and it is useful to be able to report that and show it to commercial customers.” When creating the best possible product Tim says they must follow a strict recipe which starts with a quality mating

programme, then quality DNA and making sure the animals are fed well. As it can take two to three generations for good marbling genetics to really come through Tim says patience is key. “One of the frustrating things about cattle breeding is that it is long term but that's the reality.” He firmly believes that in order for commercial farmers to make a living out of beef cattle they must strive for efficiency and profitability. “Those technologies are going to get more competitive and make New Zealand more competitive. We have to keep our customers satisfied or they will go somewhere else and look at alternative land uses.”

a multibillion dollar industry around the world. “Back then there were forum sites where geeky characters were hanging out and experimenting with the technology. “As soon as I saw that proto type, there was a light bulb moment, so I started following what was happening and became one of those geeky characters myself.” It was here that Rob and Linda became interested in the physical airframe structures and began experimenting. “Things were falling out of the sky all the time at the start. They would only fly for a maximum of four to five minutes carrying a tiny little point and shoot camera.” Rob and Linda focussed on using carbon fibre, a lightweight vibration absorbing material, whilst everyone

oming from a background as a commercial pilot, Rob had always been interested in flight and aviation. “I’ve always played with model airplanes and I had a model helicopter that I needed to buy some parts for. Linda and I went into an out of the way little model and hobby shop and it was there we saw a very crude version of what was to be the beginnings of a commercial/consumer aerial robot,” he said. The first aerial robot prototypes were made up of aluminium curtain rods screwed together to form a cross with and a camera wrapped in foam and cable tied to the underneath. There was a very crude PCB board with some sensors and that was it. “This was the very very beginnings of what is now

else was still using aluminium. Rob taught himself how to use technical design software and started drawing up airframe structures. “We hand-made our own airframe designs and got to the point where we could get crystal clear high resolution images and video from cameras hanging underneath these crafts. At that point we had a bit of a eureka moment and

we were ready to start it as a business for aerial photography.” Some of their hand made prototypes were photographed and put online. They were soon flooded with enquiries and people began to offer large sums of money to buy them. “At that time it took us three months to complete one. We decided if we could machine make them we could

has grown into a billion dollar company pumping out 30,000 plastic drones a month aimed for the consumer market. However Rob says he couldn’t do that. “I couldn’t be a part of a company that makes plastic things that will last a short while and end up in landfills. I am inspired by creating quality and beauty and things that are useful and add value so we chose to go down this path and focus on professional, specialised markets who use the technology as a tool — meaning we weren’t instantly going to grow big and get rich and famous, but it is much easier for me to sleep at night. “Farmers are using them more and more. There is the immediate opportunity for situational awareness, monitoring operations without actually leaving your front porch. For a lot of farmers to check on fences, stock, water

troughs and leaks takes up a lot of time and this is a time saving device, and it also eliminates the need to take risks on quad bikes — utilising the technology to reduce injury and even deaths due to quad bike accidents.” Farmers can also use multi spectral cameras on these aerial robots which scan crops and gather information about the level of nutrients in the plants and the ground around them. “If you buy a machine off us today, you have a tool for a good few years. Our new range, launching in a couple of months, is our most advanced craft yet and is future proof. As new sensors and hi tech smart add-ons continue to be invented, we can just attach them to the craft as an upgrade. We build flying robots that you invest in — it’s a high performance utility tool designed to last for years.”

Aerial robots are becoming popular in the agricultural industry as a way to save time and reduce injuries

sell them commercially. That was a change in direction for us and soon we launched the business Droidworx online. Within three months we had about 60 distributors — mostly start-up companies — from around the world.” At this stage the company was operating out of a house in New South Wales so Rob and Linda decided to move to New Zealand in 2010, choosing Raglan for the lifestyle, to launch their business Aeronavics Ltd before they got too big. Rob says he is constantly motivated by the vast possibilities of what these aerial robots

can do, and how they can contribute to a safer, more sustainable and more prosperous environment “What started off as hobby machines for aerial photographers are now being used for search and rescue, mapping and other critical commercial applications such as precision agriculture and infrastructure inspection.” In comparison to some overseas companies making similar products, Aeronavics Ltd has stayed small, more like a boutique manufacturer, focussed on a specialised market. Another company which started a year after them

racey grew up on the farm until moving to the city and then travelling overseas eventually returning to the farm two and a half years ago. Tracey’s love of all things natural led her to build a straw bale home on the farm, living with a smaller footprint on the environment and being more sustainable. She is a beauty therapist by trade and specialises in skin health. “I discuss healthy diet choices with my clients and they often ask where to buy their meat. Of course I am lucky, I know where my meat comes from,” said Tracey. “Dad and I discussed the option of making our beef available to others and the idea of Grandad’s Beef was born — grown grandad’s way, like it used to be.

Our farming system is about feeding the soil, which in return produces beef that is higher in nutrients, with the added bonus of very little heavy metals in the soil. The process starts and ends in the soil.” The property was originally a dairy farm but Cliff and Maureen purchased it as a sheep farm. They converted back to dairy and eventually decided to rear calves and now they run dry stock with a few sheep for the family. “Mum and dad have continued farming the property over the years — they are constantly learning and refining what they do,” said Tracey. Tracey says farming styles and systems have continually changed since her mum and dad were young. “My dad had been brought up under the NPK

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

system and was taught grass would not grow unless you add these three things to it — nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. He now farms biologically. “They didn’t wake up 35 years ago and say gosh we need to farm biologically. In those days it was 25– 27 per cent interest rates and it was literally, do I put fertiliser on the farm or pay the mortgage. “Dad paid the bank and learnt that actually, grass does still grow without NPK.” He started his own trials with natural fertilisers and came to the conclusion that you can’t self prescribe and get the correct results, that it is best to take advantage of the science available and have things tested. “Now he uses the Kinsey/Albrecht system and the soil is tested to see what it needs. “There are 72 naturally occurring elements plus an additional 10 or so other elements including carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and microbes. We can’t get a healthy balanced soil by adding just three elements — NPK.” Samples are sent to the US for testing of what is missing or bound up. Natural fertiliser is then applied according to the results and recommendations given. “We have been doing this for three years and can see what is being influenced by what’s coming out of the soil. We are getting more nutrients and have really healthy animals. Everyone and everything, including the environment, benefits from this style of farming.” Tracey started Grandad’s Beef

People want confidence that the animals have been treated humanely and with kindness and that the environment is being looked after. We provide quality over quantity. Converting to a biological, sustainable style farming practice, using natural fertilisers has made this possible. We know our stock have the best feed available.” The meat goes to a local butcher who ages it the old style way for two weeks. Helping sore joints Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease with over 70 per cent affected at some time, often from middle age. For me it struck much earlier. My hyper-flexible thumb joints meant that the joint cartilage was severely worn in my thirties. From my forties this caused significant problems limiting the use of my hands. Now at 61 years old, I still have worn joints but have almost no symptoms. This is testimony to the combination of an anti-inflammatory diet and a supplement programme high in omega-3, antioxidants and joint support compounds, especially high doses of chondroitin and curcumin (turmeric). Joint products with glucosamine and chondroitin have been available for 20 years and the past few years has seen more intensive research to assess the effectiveness of these compounds. Older style formulations were heavily weighted towards glucosamine sulphate. This was probably because research published in Lancet in 2001 showed benefits from using glucosamine for (knee) osteoarthritis. More recent research has focussed on the reasons why these compounds

seem to work. An excellent French study published in 2011 looked specifically at chondroitin sulphate and concluded: ‘CS treatment significantly reduced the cartilage volume loss in knee OA starting at six months of treatment. These findings suggest a joint structure protective effect of CS and provide new in vivo information on its mode of action in knee OA’ — Wildi et al, 2011, Annals of Rheumatic Diseases. As a result of this research I reformulated my joint product to boost chondroitin to the levels used in this research. With experience, I have found combining these ingredients with omega-3 and potent antioxidants can really make a difference. Feel free to call me for personalised advice. • Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

The native choice

RUSHBROOKE Building Services

The Native Plant Nursery was first established in Taupo and has been growing native plants since 1961. The company then branched out to Waiuku in South Auckland and has now established a nursery in Christchurch on Marshland Road. We supply quality plants for landscaping and ecological restoration (with seed sourced from your region), as well as farming revegetation and general gardening requirements at wholesale prices. We also offer a range of exotic species to fast growing shelter belt and firewood plants. Plant grades range from seedlings in root trainer packs through to large grade two-metre trees. This range is complimented with a large selection of plant growth and protection products. New Zealand’s native plants are part of our heritage and many of them are only found here. If you have an area on your farm or small block that is overgrown with weed species, don’t be overwhelmed by the thought or restoring it with native plants, the process is actually very simple and straightforward. Cutting out or removing some of the weed species in selected areas and leaving some in place to remove later will provide shelter and protection for the native species to grow and become established. It is a lot easier to maintain the regenerating weeds in a smaller area rather than removing the entire lot in one attempt. Herbicides are one

Design your outdoor haven New Zealanders have an attachment to their personal slice of paradise and regardless of constraints and challenges either by yourself or with a professional designer, the most uninviting yard can become a beautiful haven. Whilst it may be tempting to create an incredible front yard, it is a good idea to check how much of the budget your backyard design is going to use. For beginners, doing your own landscaping can be fun. Make a list of your wants and needs. Would your friends and family gather on a deck. Do you need a playground or want to grow flowers and vegetables. Draw some rough sketches of your yard with designs of where you want to place things. These will give you ideas of what may and may not work ultimately, even if they are rough, you or your designer will get an idea of what may look good. Get books out of the library on landscaping

designs and how-tos. You can easily play around with ideas without a lot of commitment. It is a good idea to study the sun and wind patterns. You might want to place a deck on a side of the house which actually gets not enough or too much sun or wind. The same goes for installing an outdoor fireplace. You do not want the wind whistling around a corner extinguishing the fire or creating hazards. Making quick decisions about

your yard can lead to choices that don’t work in the long term. If you have just moved to the property, live with it for a time so you know what is planted. In landscape design for beginners, patience is the key. If an empty space is too much to look at you can use temporary solutions such as ground covers which grow fast, plant annuals or spread mulch. This will give you a temporary solution whilst you discover what could be your lifetime backyard.

LIVESTOCK

Board represents variety

Celebrating rural consultants Three winners have been named in the 2016 Farmax Consultant of the Year Awards in Rotorua earlier this month.

Three winners of Farmax Consultant of the Year: Trevor Cook, Ellie Cranswick and Brent Boyce

They are Trevor Cook from Totally Vets Ltd in Feilding who won the Beef and Lamb New Zealand Sheep and Beef Rural Professional of the Year title, Brent Boyce from LIC’s FarmWise Consultancy Group in Wakefield who is the Dairy NZ Dairy Rural Professional of the Year and BakerAg sheep, and beef consultant Ellie Cranswick from Masterton who was named New Zealand Institute of Primary Industry Management’s Emerging Rural Professional of the Year. The Farmax Consultant of the Year Awards were open to agricultural consultants from around New Zealand. Organisers broadened the criteria this year to include all rural professionals and this year’s finalists included a polytechnic agricultural tutor and a rural banker. Sixteen finalists competed for the three titles and the prize package included a Windows tablet and professional development funding for each of the three category winners. Farmax CEO Gavin McEwen said he was

impressed with the excellent standard of nominees in all categories. “The judges had a tough job as the finalists were all impressive. The winners have gone above and beyond to make a difference to their clients and the industry. These rural professionals demonstrate commitment, innovative thinking, passion for farming, and are all working hard to advance the industry and better their communities. We congratulate them for their drive, effort and vision,” said Mr McEwen. Farmax initiated the Consultant of the Year Awards in 2013 as a way of recognising the expertise and value agricultural consultants and rural professionals provide to the pastoral farming industry in New Zealand. NZIPIM partnered with Farmax on the awards this year. From 2017 NZIPIM will take over the running of the awards. Farmax will continue its involvement as a sponsor of the Emerging Rural Professional of the Year category.

For the first time in NZ Young Farmer history the four elected members of the Governance Board are not currently working on the land but instead are rural professionals — reflecting the wide variance of exciting careers on offer in the primary industry. Social Media expert and owner of Grass Roots Media NZ, Chelsea Millar from the Taranaki/Manawatu Young Farmer region, and farm consultant Sam Waugh from the Tasman region, have both been elected to the board alongside chairman and marketing executive for Miraka, Jason Te Brake, and PGG Wrightson animal nutrition technical specialist, Nadine Huitema. The four current Young Farmer members will join Independent director Jeff Grant, Strategic Partner Elaine Cook, and FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest management committee chairman, Dean Rabbidge. Chelsea wants to use her position to strengthen and grow the NZ Young Farmers organisation and to develop a stronger leadership pathway for emerging leaders among members. For Sam, NZ Young Farmers is in a prime position to provide opportunities for young people to build skills in primary industry leadership. “My drive is to help create and develop

Terry Copeland, NZ Young Farmers CEO

these opportunities for young people.” NZ Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland said he was delighted with the calibre of the newly elected board members. “These are highly skilled individuals who have already demonstrated leadership within their own careers. I have no doubt they will be a great asset to the board.”

What’s happening to our farming practises? During the 1950’s and up to the 1980’s farming was a family affair, it worked really well with support from the community, helping each other with hay and silage and whatever was necessary. Back then the average dairy farm was 40 hectares, farming was simple and easy and during that period our NZ farmers were recognised as the most proficient and cost effective farmers on the planet, people from around the globe were coming to NZ to witness what was happening. Our agricultural science was enviable, our scientists were completely independent, funded by the taxpayer and expanding the envelope of good, healthy farming. There were very little problems and I remember the most toxic product in the

milking shed was the oil required to keep the separator running smoothly. When we hit the mid 1980’s there was a radical change in farming based around corporate scientific systems and industrial farming coming out of the United States. The first big shift I recognised was the introduction of maize as a supplementary feed for dairy and drystock. What sort of backward thinking was that? Maize causes acidosis in Ruminant animals resulting in mastitis. Maize and corn are for chickens, chickens do well on it, however Ruminants which are the bulk of our farming are designed to convert grass into milk and meat and they are really good at it, especially if there is plenty of clover on the farm. The other big move was the introduction of toxic chemical animal health tonics. Stored behind locked cages in a profusion of different

colours, all with the same word — Poison — written on the plastic label. They are there to control the myriad of problems, but they don’t really work, as we see pests, diseases and weeds building immunity towards these artificial chemical concoctions. There is a solution to all this chemical dilemma and all the answers are within nature. Just to get you thinking onto the right track we need to go back 460 million years ago to when the first plant appeared and there was obviously soil biota already operating and multiplying in the soil. Once the plant world was underway then other life forms such as animals and sea life began to multiply. Planet earth has been able to sustain all life on the globe for the past 460 million years and is still doing it in those areas of natural habitat. 100 years of chemical production and our beautiful planet is suffering, we need to take care of our planet and the fastest way to do this is to move away from the “chemical age”; hook into all the natural capital supplied free by Mother Nature and begin working with Agrissentials multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers bringing health vitality and immunity to plant life which will transfer on to animals and humans.

This is all part and parcel of Mother Nature’s system. Nature has all the checks and balances to keep life pumping. Chemicals increase problems. Chemicals increase their own market. The heavy use of chemicals have impacted on soil to the extent a lot of soils have no life, no micro organisms and no worms. This scenario opens up the soil to fungal toxins, infertility and FE causing fungus, these toxic fungi live on the dead plant material in the bottom of the pasture. The best way to fix this problem is to have a live, living soil full of microorganisms and worms, which love thatch and turn it into topsoil, keeping the whole system alive, healthy and fertile, fixing the problem, keeping the stock happy and keeping money in the farmer’s pocket. With nature it’s a win, win situation. Call us today on 0800 THE KEY for a FREE INFO PACK, that’s 0800 843 539 to find out how we can partner with you to find a better way of farming. Blue for you Mark Hadlow is a Blue September ambassador and has a special message for our rural men. “I’m a firm believer that prevention is better than cure and I am amazed at the number of men who seem to think you don’t need the ‘blue glove check’ post 50 or even younger,” said Mark. “Yes sure the PSA blood test is a good start but why not go the whole hog and face your fear and get a check.” Mark says this is not scaremongering. “Too many rural men are diagnosed too late and when that happens, the outcomes are not good. Ask your doctor to do the check — it’s no big deal and can be a lifesaver. The relief and the joy of the knowledge of a normal prostate is outstanding and such a great feeling.” Mark says you owe it to yourself, your family and your stress levels. “My doctor and I joke about it — how to start your day with a surprise, a blue glove surprise. It’s not a laughing matter at all, however some men are too scared or anxious to do it and we need to help them. So really it’s up to the ‘blue glovers’ of Blue September to challenge a mate and say ‘face your fear’ and get relief. “There’s nothing brave in pretending that prostate cancer can’t happen to you. Over 3,000 men are diagnosed and 600 die each year from prostate cancer. Many of them could have been diagnosed earlier by getting gloved and had a much better outcome. So

go on, get it done and smack fear outa the park.” The prostate is a small gland, normally about the size of a walnut. It sits just below the bladder and surrounds the upper part of the urethra — the tube that carries urine from the bladder and semen from the testicles to the outside of the body through the penis. Prostate cancer is the presence of cancer cells or a cancerous growth in or on the gland. In many cases, prostate cancer is slow growing and having it won’t affect you, but in some cases, the cancer is more aggressive and can spread to your bones, liver and lungs.

Straightening out Health & Safety for farmers

Gumboots and ballerinas I bumped into a farmer I know recently and he wasn’t happy. It turns out someone had sold him a Health and Safety Plan telling him it was exactly what he needed to comply with the new Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. The salesman took his money, handed him a pile of papers and left.

He told me it was about as much use as gumboots to a ballerina on a skydive. I had to agree. Just as you need lessons to drive a car, you need help to learn how to use your Health and Safety Plan so that you not only comply with legislation, but more importantly, make sure that everyone in your place of business learns how to look for hazards and consider how safe a task is before they start. An unfortunate side effect of the new legislation is slick-talking salespeople, taking advantage of business owners who want to do the right thing, only to leave the purchaser scratching their head and wondering what they have just bought. You can start by asking the salesperson what their safety qualifications are and whether they will be running through the safety plan with you and showing you how to incorporate it into your business.

RURAL WHEELS

Next generational game changer by our motoring specialist

Subaru’s dominance of the world rally scene in the 1990s began with the rise of the deep blue, four-wheel drive missile they called the WRX. A beast on and off the track — where a road-going variant became a favourite with tuners and fast-fours afficionados — the WRX started life lean and mean. As generations passed, however, it gained all the weight associated with driver comforts and modern safety features, while its arch rival the Mitsubishi Evo sailed over the edge of twitchy performance. When the WRX was king, one of the favourite models on offer was a four door station wagon, combining a

little practicality with the turbocharged madness. New Zealand took to the WRX wagon with enthusiasm, matched by our love affair with other ‘estate’ Subarus — the ubiquitous silver Legacy enjoyed the dubious honour for some time of being our nation’s most stolen car. Then came our new automotive crush, the SUV, and wagons of every marque faded into the sunset. Today, in most showrooms, the crossover 4x4 rules the roost, with very few true station wagons to be found.

A distinctive name for a car with big boots to fill. The WRX successor does it with style

That’s why the new Subaru Levorg is bucking all kinds of trends. It’s a wagon in a world of compact sedans and crossover SUVs. It picks up where the WRX of the past left off. With the new Legacy 3.6 turning heads but not available with all that extra boot space, it’s slotting into the Subaru stable with big boots to fill in both directions. Setting aside the very distinctive name — which has been compared to that of a James Bond villain — it’s refreshingly easy to see what the Levorg is about. The WRX wagon may have skipped a generation, but it’s back with an aggressive and angular new facelift and the requisite smooth boxer-configured 2 litres under the hood to offer up 197

kilowatts of power. All the precision and poise of the regular WRX is right here despite the different rear roofline — a small feat of engineering magic. The best accolade anyone could give is that it evokes the feeling of the old original WRX wagon, and it’s clear that great lengths have been gone to to achieve just that. But the final clue — and a bit of a surprise — is hidden in the name of the Levorg. It stands for LEgacy eVOlution touRinG — meaning that this diminutive dynamo is in fact meant to replace not just the WRX but the faithful old Legacy as well, and that finally, unthinkably — Subaru have produced an Evo.

RURAL WHEELS

Adventure ahead by Andy Bryenton

Triumph motorcycles have always seemed a more refined choice when it comes to power and prestige on two wheels — with a pedigree stretching back to 1902 and a stable of names including the Thruxton, Bonneville and Trident, there’s a hint of true English heritage to the brand. But despite the fact that Triumph excel at producing beautifully crafted, classic inspired machines — take a look at the new T120 Bonneville for example — they’re dedicated to new technology. From the early days of Triumph’s ‘reboot’, the management have looked to the future while preserving the best aesthetic cues of the past, and the recipe has cooked up some modern classics. Now it’s the turn of a Triumph icon to get a boost from some cutting-edge tech. The original Triumph Tiger was a speedy little single cylinder scrambler, built before world war two. It evolved into Triumph’s ‘go anywhere’ model, but with the advent of this year’s new generation there may very well be no terrain the Tiger Explorer can’t tame. This is thanks in part to a massive increase in power over the old ‘37 — a 12 valve, triple cylinder 1215cc engine generating biblical amounts of torque. It’s the biggest engine in its class, and

it’s mated to a six speed box with a super high sixth gear for lazy revs and fuel economy on those long, openroad hauls. The choice between road and wilderness is defined by the two models in the Tiger range — the XC for the rough stuff and the XR for the highway. Don’t be fooled — the XR isn’t restricted to lovely fresh tarmac. But it’s the XC which can really get stuck in to the mud, sand, gravel and dirt of the wider world, thanks to some very clever thinking and design. Both models of Tiger Explorer share the same computerised brain — an unthinkable luxury back in the 1930s. As well as delivering confidence-inducing rider modes for different conditions — including one for rain and slippery roads which would prove a godsend right now in New Zealand — the ‘brain’ of the Tiger also deploys a so-called Triumph Semi Active Suspension System. This uses no less than three gyroscopes

MOTORCYCLE CENTRE

The new Tiger Explorer is worlds away from the simple single-pot scrambler of the 1930s

and three accelerometers to measure the speed, pitch, yaw and roll of the bike, adjusting the suspension damping accordingly. It’s technology which you’d have found only in a cruise missile not so long ago, and it makes the Explorer — in both variants — as sure footed as a the proverbial mountain goat. With a crisp and angular new look, stuffed

with futuristic technology and ready to ride from here to Siberia if that’s what you’re planning for the day, the Tiger Explorer is positive proof that Triumph can take on the thoroughly modern adventure bike segment of the market and deliver the goods. With more and more riders opting for this style of machine to explore new horizons, it’s well worth a closer look.

Delivering the goods Ford’s Transit van series has a been a favourite throughout its history With a distinguished track record as not only the van of choice for couriers, BBC film crews and countless tradespeople since its inception in the 1960s, but also holding the dubious honour of being the first choice of British bank robbers. Statistics can be strange things sometimes. Still, the tradies and crims alike — along with touring bands, moving companies and florists — latched

on to the transit’s blend of space, handling and power in an era when most vans possessed the shape and relative velocity of toasters. Now, as Ford dominate the light commercial landscape with their Ranger utility, it’s a good time to look at its high-sided stablemate, which is racking up the honours in its own right. The Ford Transit Custom is striking for a few reasons as soon as it pulls into

view. The first is that it does away with the fallacy that vans should be plain sheet metal boxes on wheels. A dash of the same design flair which has made the new Mustang a must-have can be seen from the front grille all the way down the deeply speed-creased sides. In the cockpit it’s far less like the old traditional van’s three-seater ‘church pew’ and more like the front of a modern sedan, with controls — including Ford’s sublime Sync II digital suite — befitting a car rather than a cargo hauler. An especially nice touch is the removal of the traditional van’s dog-leg shifter, replacing either an additional stalk off the ‘tree’ or an immensely attenuated stick with a sporty little short-throw knob on a plinth. Get up and go is provided by a Duratorq diesel with stop-go technology, making this a perfect choice for those who grind through the urban jungle on jobs. Fuel savings are further improved by clever use of injection tech, paring back the fuel bill to 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres. That’s not bad when you consider the big trick up the Transit Custom’s sleeve — the sheer amount of cargo which this van can carry. With flip-open hatches under the seats from the rear cargo space, the

Transit can transport pipes and timbers three metres long. It can swallow up three Euro-style pallets, with ample tie-down points and massive floor-toceiling doors, eliminating anything to snag or foul up the ingress or egress of heavy packages. All of that before you consider the additional 2,750 kilos of towing capacity on call. Despite this, the Transit Custom is small enough to ease into covered carparks, and boasts a turning circle some big sedans would envy. Ford have clearly talked to drivers across a number of trades to develop this machine — the winner of the International Van of the Year award in the year of its release. If you’re looking for a hard working vehicle to drive business growth, it’s definitely a good place to start.

Peat lake restoration

23

Described as ‘critically threatened’ under the Land Environments of New Zealand Threatened Environments Classification, peat lakes are globally rare ecosystems and the Waikato region is home to more than thirty of these lakes. Living Water partners, Fonterra and the Department of Conservation have created some great looking and much needed ‘silt traps’ on two of the Waikato Peat Lakes they are working hard to restore — Lakes Ruatuna and Rotomanuka. The Waikato Peat Lakes area is one of five key catchments where Fonterra and DOC work in their Living Water partnership programme. Living Water Fonterra North Island project manager Tim Brandenburg says the lakes are an integral part of New Zealand’s landscape, with silt traps a key contributor to restoring lake water quality. “The majority of pollution comes from sediment and excess nutrients that drain off cleared lands surrounding the lakes. Silt traps are like a vital organ the ecosystem needs to recover — they act like a kidney. We’re artificially

creating what would normally happen in nature — when a stream meanders through a wetland and filters out silt coming downstream.” These culturally and historically important peat lakes are a significant focus for Living Water as part of its mission to improve water quality and increase the abundance of native wildlife in five catchments where intensive dairying exists. “We’ve given the lakes the equivalent of a kidney transplant,” said Mike Paviour, DOC Living Water Waikato site lead. “On top of that, we are planting both the silt traps and lake edges with thousands of native wetland plants to provide habitat for native wildlife. We are excited to see the native species thrive as habitat becomes established and we will be working to improve

public access so everyone can enjoy it.” Living Water works with farmers, iwi, hapu, community groups and key stakeholders to improve the abundance and variety of native wildlife and water quality. The Waikato Peat Lakes catchment includes three lakes where Living Water continues on its mission to help restore Waikato’s unique peat ecosystems.

The other catchments are Kaipara Harbour’s Hikurangi catchment, Tikapa Moana (Firth of Thames) Pukorokoro/ Miranda catchment, Waikato peat lakes focussing on Lakes Areare, Ruatuna and Rotomanuka, Te Waihora (Lake Ellesmere) in Canterbury focussing on the Ararira LII catchment and AwaruaWaituna in Southland focussing on Waituna catchment.
