Waikato Regional Council has been told there were now 12 male and eight female kokako on the maunga as of early this month. The finance committee, which approved a $110,000 contribution to the project’s overall costs from the natural heritage fund earlier this year, signed off a formal funding deed this week. “It was good to hear of the project’s successes. The natural heritage fund is designed to help other organisations undertake just this sort of environmental initiative and it’s great to see the grant being successfully utilised as planned,” said committee chair Jane Hennebry. The project is being carried out by the Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society which says it’s had excellent volunteer support on top of agency funding. The society’s ultimate goal is to reestablish a 500-strong, self-sustaining, genetically diverse population of North Island kokako on Mt Pirongia by translocating birds into an existing

1,000 hectare predator control zone on the mountain maintained by the society. The transfer of a total of 40 birds is due to take place over three years in conjunction with the Department of Conservation’s kokako specialist group. The council’s funding has been helping with the costs of kokako capture, post-release management and pest control. The birds are being sourced from Pureora forest and discussions are underway to also return Pirongia-lineage kokako currently on Tiritiri Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf. Kokako was once a species that is now officially at risk. They were present on Mt Pirongia until the 1990s when they were removed in the hope they would breed more successfully elsewhere. The committee has been told that achieving the project’s goals will provide an opportunity for the regional community and the 35,000 visitors to Pirongia Forest Park each year to encounter kokako in their natural environment.

New mastitis antibiotic A new ready to use antibiotic formulation for treating mastitis that took seven years to develop, register and launch is now available for New Zealand dairy farmers. Penethaject RTU has a unique formulation that requires no pre-mixing. It is the first time such a formulation has been developed anywhere in the world. “Penethaject RTU will make it easier for farmers to effectively treat clinical mastitis, a condition affecting 10-20 per cent of New Zealand’s five million dairy cows every year,” says Bayer dairy veterinarian Dr Ray Castle. “The active ingredient known as Penethamate, previously came in powder form and had to be mixed together with a liquid to create an injectable solution. “Developing a pre-formulated version had been a scientific challenge for many years until scientists in Bayer New Zealand’s laboratories worked with Otago University to create a stable formulation, something that had never been achieved before.” Dr Castle says Penethamate is stable long term as a powder, but not as a liquid. “The challenge was to create a liquid formulation in which the active ingredient remained stable and active without caking or sticking together in clumps. “It is a world first and confirms New Zealand’s position as a leader in dairy science.” Dr Castle says the chemistry in Penethaject, a form of penicillin allows

antibiotic concentrations to build up in a cow’s udder. These concentrations are up to 10 times higher than those achieved by other penicillin formulations. This allows the antibiotic to directly work on the mastitis bacteria, particularly Streptococcus uberis - the most common bacteria responsible for mastitis in New Zealand. Once the mastitis is treated, the antibiotic quickly leaves the milk, allowing the cow to be back in milk

production, in some cases within 48 hours. “As farmers head into the milking season they need to be particularly alert to the clinical signs of mastitis, which include changes in the colour and consistency of the milk, and/or redness, heat, and swelling in the udder,” says Dr Castle.

Fields of gold

by Joanna Manson

A 21-acre farm in Gordonton becomes a sea of yellow from mid-June to October as Clandon Daffodils comes to life brightening up the Waikato with its thriving flower business.

I

an Riddell has 25 years’ experience growing daffodils, and he’s learned from the best in the business after being approached by grower Graham Phillips who asked him if he “wanted to give daffodils ago.” Graham and his wife Bronwyn founded Clandon Daffodils which moved to Gordonton in 1996 and after joining Graham in 1991, last year Ian and his wife Marian bought out the remainder of the business from them. Graham has more than 50 years’ experience with hybridising daffodils

and Clandon now boasts more than 1,000 varieties. It’s mid-August and coming into peak flower picking season. This means every week on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Ian or Graham make the trip to Mount Wellington flower market in Auckland. With the auction starting at 5.30am, it’s an early start for Ian who needs to leave home at 3.30am to get to the auction and set up in time. He says it’s a perfect time to ‘hit the road’ especially with no worries

Servicing the farming community — Hauraki Plains and Waikato

Back in our colonial times, native timber exports were important. But, in the 1880s, with fewer trees and more farmland, meat exports went ahead. Now, after a wait of 136 years, timber is once more in front, at $5.87 billion, predicted to be more than a third of a billion dollars ahead of meat export returns into next year. And, modern forestry is sustainable, with a rotation of planted trees, which provide us with continuous environmental benefits, regional employment and overseas income.

Ian driving the ‘mule’ full of picked daffodils and Graham in the background

of being stuck in the Auckland traffic during those hours. Once at the market he likes to stick around afterwards. “It’s interesting to see what the other daffodil growers are getting for their prices, see what varieties they’ve got and how they’re marketing their flowers to see if we can do better. “There’s people who sell bulbs as their main source of income and do the flowers on the side while we do flowers as a main source of income and the bulbs help us keep alive in summer time.” Ian returns to the daffodil farm between 8-9am making it back in time to advise his workers where to pick for the day. The flowers are usually picked to make bunches of 10 and are also sold at their shop on the property at 745 Gordonton Road, which is open from Monday to Saturday from July to early October.

The plants begin to flower from early to mid-June right through until the second week of October. Clandon can offer flowers with longer stems and Graham is constantly working out how to make different varieties flower earlier than usual, something Ian says can be “quite an effort.” Now with around 160 commercial varieties this season’s wet conditions haven’t gone unnoticed. “Our plants are suffering in the wetter areas where we haven’t got enough drainage. We’ve had the wettest year since forever, it’s a big push to get the flowers picked. “Today we will push out 500 bunches. We’ve got our sights set on Daffodil Day at the moment as we have a contract with the Waikato and Bay of Plenty Cancer Society to supply all their daffodils.”Ian says they are proud to support the Waikato Cancer Society with

their fundraising efforts producing 1516,000 bunches for them every year. One trend over the past few years is the noticeable demand “for double daffodils” which look like a rose and commands a high price this time of the year. “Clandon Daffodils would probably be the biggest producers of double daffodils in NZ. We have them on the market for 11-12 weeks and the early ones pay very well. The florists particularly like them for bouquets.” Once October passes and the daffodils are no longer flowering the focus is placed on weed control. The bulbs are then dug up from November onwards all the way through to Christmas. Ian also uses the unusual method

of using hot water to treat the bulbs. “We put them into a solution at 44 degrees celsius for three hours. This means before they go back into the ground it kills any bugs you can’t see visually.” Looking ahead Ian says the daffodil industry looks positive for the farm. “For us specialising in having different varieties is all attributed to Graham’s ability to hybridise and bring on new varieties in our block. At the moment we’re hoping to grow an earlier white double daffodil — we don’t know anyone else in NZ or the world with a double white flowering so early. It’s probably a 10-year dream but after 10 years we’ve got one row’s worth and people will be happy to buy it.”

HUNTING THE HUNTER Tracey Johnson is a relief milker with a passion for hunting wild boar and deer, not just as a sport, but to provide food for her family, keep new born lambs safe, and to stop the destruction to farm pasture created by the animals. by Ann Morgan

“W

e are based in Taumarunui, and my partner Brad manages a 900 herd cow dairy farm,” says Tracey. “Brad has always hunted and I grew up on a dairy farm and my parents had pigs, sheep and cows. I was always involved with dad and would help with the home kill and other things around the farm.” Two years ago Tracey got involved with deer hunting and met Brad. “We are hunting all that time. We go to Thames and Coromandel to hunt pigs on private land and my sister’s

property backs onto the Kaimai ranges, but the majority of our hunting is here. “I have always been a provider and do preserving and make my own cheese and things. One day I wondered how I could put meat on the table and follow in my dad’s footsteps. “I enjoy the adventure of the outdoors and got into deer hunting because venison is a bit of a delicacy — you can’t beat the flavour of wild deer and pork.” Tracey is one of four children and their father didn’t want to hunt any more. “I got my gun licences and he handed his guns down to me as no-one else

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

The older dog helps to train the younger dogs to hunt whilst out in the bush

Tracey says gun safety is a priority and putting in the hard yards makes hunting more rewarding wanted to hunt. I managed to shoot a deer and that was that — I have hunted ever since. “You can’t beat providing food for your family and putting the hard yards in to get it is rewarding. It wasn’t until I met Brad that I got into pig hunting. I used to rear large white pigs and saddlebacks and liked working with them. People think they are a dirty animal but they are actually really clean. “I have always been cautious of wild ones. I went out with Brad and experienced wild boar hunting and now it is just another day in the bush.” Tracey has an older dog and two pups she is training with the help of one of Brad’s experienced dogs. “Sometimes it is easier without dogs as they can be

heavy footed but what is the point of having them if you don’t take them with you,” says Tracey. “You can keep dogs from a certain extent of injury by using breastplates with rip collars around their neck. It is like a jacket that covers their front legs and goes up around the neck and covers their main organs.” “My dogs are very well mannered. Their number one thing each day is to keep the boss happy and get a good pat for doing a good job — I totally trust them. “Deer hunting is rewarding too. I have let animals go that I thought were too nice to kill. Recently I had one lined up and I thought she might be pregnant so I decided to let her have an offspring.

VIETNAM, LAOS & CAMBODIA

“I saw a 12 point stag rolling around on his back and whacking his horns into the trees. It was a great sight to see. “When we are hunting, the gun holder walks in front and we load when we are comfortable with our positions and are about to shoot. It is better to be safe than sorry. “We have a jacket we put on our animal that we have shot so people can see that someone has it. There wouldn’t be any issues with guns if everyone positively identified their target before they fired at it. “Anyone in the bush can vouch that the first time you are out with a gun you can get the shakes and get worried, but you have to ‘identify the target’ 100 per cent.

oodland recently launched New Zealand’s first free range eggs that bear individual stamps

of origin. “For me, being involved with free range hens daily brings with it a new challenge and I am always learning. There is a real art to managing free range hens, and once one obstacle is overcome, they throw something new at you which is always interesting,” says South Island farm manager Nina Winmall. “Glenpark, our first Woodland free range farm has been in operation for more than 15 years. As a company and an industry, we are making some real advances and it is very exciting to be a part of that. “I am a third generation

poultry farmer and as a little girl who absolutely adored her old man, I spent as much time out on the farm as I could with him. Apart from some time spent travelling I have pretty much always been involved in the industry in one way or another.” Nina says the stock team often talk about the hens that follow them around the house when they are doing their checks. They also have a real pecking order and it is very interesting watching them interact. “The hens all have their own personalities and there are always one or two characters that no matter how many times you put them back over the fence with their flock, the next day they are out again.” Inside the houses the

The social birds interact with each other and all have their own unique personalities hens always have access to fresh feed and water. “We work with nutritionists to provide a balanced diet to meet the hens’ nutritional requirements. Our feed is made here in the South Island by our sister company, MainFeeds.” These mixes are a blend of locally grown wheat and barley, plant proteins and essential vitamins and minerals. Outside on the range the hens forage, scratching around for worms and bugs enjoying their natural behaviour. The ideal weather for a hen out on the range is an overcast misty day. A lot of people presume that the hens would prefer a clear sunny day but they are always fearful of attack from above so feel a lot more comfortable under clouds. This is also why trees and shelter are so important. “Our own hens are reared at our dedicated free range

rearing farm. As with all livestock for production, rearing is a very important part of the chain — it is essential we do this part ourselves so the hens arrive at our laying farms in the best condition.” The hens are set up for laying and prepared for their new environment at the laying farm. “When consumers buy Woodland eggs they can be 100 per cent sure they are authentic free range. Every egg will be stamped and have the Woodland tree symbol and a code — this can be used on Woodland’s website to show where each egg was laid,” says Michael Guthrie, managing director of Mainland Poultry Limited. “As New Zealand’s leading producer of free range eggs, we were naturally very concerned about recent allegations that a small number of cage eggs may have been marketed as being free range. “This compelled us to fast-track our

plans to guarantee the provenance of our eggs by providing complete traceability from the farm to the consumer’s kitchen. “At all the farms, the eggs are collected daily to ensure freshness. We stamp each egg at the barn where we collect them, so there can be no question that it is, in fact, a genuine Woodland free range egg.” The technology was developed in the Netherlands by Nuovo. It uses safe food grade ink, so the egg is completely unaffected by the stamping process. Maurik Wouters, owner of Nuovo says egg stamping for traceability is already regulation in the EU as part of the European standard and has been

The raw materials we use to produce our fertilisers come directly out of the environment so they have no impact on the environment — they are completely safe and sustainable. It’s amazing, the reliance some farmers have for chemical fertilisers and the NPK balance sheet theory — a false theory at that, with no science behind it. As the main nurturers of life, farming women are always open to alternative farming methods and alternative medicines which have been strongly promoted by Tineke from Homeopathic

Farm Services (HFS). She has won a few awards over the years for her efforts. So, in today’s farming world there will be some changes taking place, but I believe they will be more conservative and more focussed on producing better stock feed from the farm — keeping it simple and effective, after all rumen animals are the best converters of grass into protein, milk and meat. Don’t be tricked into fodder beet, kale and other non-grass products. The only ones that gain here are the corporations, and please note that they’re all offshore corporations. Stick with grass. There are plenty of top quality grass seed merchants in New Zealand, without needing to go offshore — let’s back our own people. As a small independent NZ owned natural fertiliser company, we are already fielding strong enquiry from farmers that have lost faith in the NPK chemical system — it is harsh on both the farm and the environment. Agrissentials natural certified system works together with Mother Nature, storing minerals within the organic matter, building humus for better water retention within the soil, increasing microbial wealth within the soil which

attracts strong numbers of worms setting up a recycling system that captures all waste falling upon the farm, back into top soil. This is a major recycling system taking all the dead life back through the crucible of life to regenerate new life and new soil. Using Agrissentials fertilisers you can install this live, recycling system on your farm which will be regenerating top soil for your farm — how good is that, working with Mother Nature on your side. So, to all those farming mums and farming women who are shoulder to shoulder with their partners doing the daily chores, day in and day out, we take this opportunity to thank them and all farmers throughout the land for driving our agriculture system forward. A Blue Do for cancer care It’s Blue September again and the Prostate Cancer Foundation is getting the message out to Kiwi men to get checked for prostate cancer.

This year it is all about having a ‘Blue Do’ so get organised with some mates, colleagues and family, and arrange an event to spread the message and raise some funds to support the foundation. Farmers, tradies, workmates and radio hosts are all getting in on the act. You can check out upcoming events and get ideas for your own Blue Do on the website. Perhaps you fancy a blue breakfast, a blue barbecue or a blueberry bake off? Or organise a Blue Friday like many workplaces organise. It really gets people involved in dressing up, preparing some novelty food, and focusses on awareness of prostate cancer. Jason Gunn has joined the great team of Blue September Ambassadors — he tells how his dad was diagnosed with

the disease, and how hard it was to talk about it and what the prospects might be. Fortunately for them the outcome was good. Early detection is the key. With one in eight men getting prostate cancer, catching the disease early and getting effective treatment saves lives. That’s the central message this Blue September. Family members can be a great incentive and encouragement for the men in their family to go to the GP and get a check. Don’t leave it to the men — they are often a bit slack in looking after their health. If they won’t go to get a check themselves, make an appointment and get them along. Find out more and register for a ‘Blue Do’ at blueseptember.org.nz

Therapy for osteoarthritis Last edition we discussed how high levels of chondroitin sulphate (CS) help joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). An excellent 2010 study ‘Chondroitin sulphate in the treatment of osteoarthritis’ (Y. Herotin, PhD) identified the actions of CS on arthritic joints. They identified over 30 positive changes in arthritic joints with high doses of chondroitin sulphate. It is worth noting that the dosages in the study were much higher than in many joint products. Most products have around 250mg of CS whereas the study used 800mg or more. I generally commence therapy even higher with 1500mg of high grade chondroitin. The anti-inflammatory effects of high doses of CS appear to inhibit inflammatory chemicals including prostaglandins and COX-2 enzymes. These are the targets of antiinflammatory drugs which is why they can be effective at reducing pain. Secondly high levels of CS appear to slow the rate of cartilage loss. One suggested mechanism is that CS appears to protect the chondrocyte cells responsible for maintaining cartilage. Research showed that CS can actually prevent the death of chondrocytes which is the real driver behind cartilage loss. Thirdly high levels of CS appear

to be anabolic — it appears to be able to generate new cartilage. The mechanisms here seems to be that CS stimulates chondrocyte cells to increase production of collagen and other compounds needed to make new cartilage. By way of example I have been helping someone with OA in her knees, back and hands. She had been using a joint supplement heavily weighted towards glucosamine rather than chondroitin. We added a supplement with high levels of CS with noticeable improvements on this combination with less pain and more mobility. I am sure the extra curcumin and Omega 3 all helped with these improvements. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. This Blue September, join me in the fight against prostate cancer Whether you go little or large, it’s time to get your blue on for Blue September. This year, we’re asking you to get together and have a Blue Do – that’s right, a Blue Do – to help fund the fight against prostate cancer. The only question is… how blue will you do?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

Like any business venture, care is needing in setting up, and in this day and age there is a huge emphasis on health and safety. Last year the New Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) came into effect which repealed the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. Good health and safety practice is not something you can just buy off the shelf and farmers need to build health and safety into everyday activity on-farm. The same applies when they venture out into other endeavors. WorkSafe’s agriculture programme manager, Al McCone, says while many farmers will want to get consultants in to give them expert advice, there is no single product or document that is a silver bullet for farm safety. Farmers should only employ competent and qualified professional health and safety advisors. “When selecting a new contractor or buying stock, farmers do their homework,” says Mr McCone. “They shop around, look online, ask other farmers and make a decision

based on sound information. The same should apply to buying health and safety advice and resources. For a would-be farming contractor, the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment can offer health safety direction advice as well as directions on tendering for work. It says tendering can be time consuming but it can also lead to substantial rewards. ‘You should think carefully before, during and after the process. Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your

chances of winning contracts,’ it says. You’ll need to think about the day-to-day and long-term effects on your business as well as those all important health and safety requirements. Each year health and safety inspectors carr y out 12,500 workplace assessments. These are proactive, planned visits and are not usually triggered by a report of serious harm or a health and safety complaint. At least 80% of workplace assessments are targeted to industries identified as high risk, which includes agriculture, forestry, construction and manufacturing.

RURAL CONTRACTORS

Technology cares for the land by Paul Campbell

Technology in the 21st century would no doubt baffle the farmers who broke in the Waikato farms of last century but today it has become an essential tool for the agriculture industry. The Global Positioning System and its spin-offs have advanced out of sight combining real-time data collection with accurate position information that is available on a smartphone . GPS is being used to achieve precision farming enabling the land-owner and the rural contractor to develop the most effective soil/plant treatment strategies enabling higher farm production while GPS mapping allows aerial top dressers and bulk spreaders to carry out the precise application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers. That’s vital for the bottom line as better control and spread of costly fertiliser, accurate spraying and vegetation control is possible, reducing overall expenses, producing a higher yield, and even more importantly creating a more environmentally friendly farm with strict application controls possible. Precision agriculture is about collecting timely geospatial information on soil-plant-animal requirements and prescribing and applying sitespecific treatments to increase agricultural production. But it is not only ground or aerial spreading that has taken a huge leap forward. All other aspects of farming have benefited, with field-placed sensors in stock paddocks, croplands and orchards sending real time data to phones, i-pads and computers. Farmers are seeing benefits from micromanaging their fields.

The benefits of precision agriculture are not only limited to the large farms with huge capital investments and experience with information technologies. There are inexpensive and easy-to-use methods and techniques. Information needed for improving land and water use can be collected. Farmers can improve the use of fertilisers and other soil amendments, determining the economic threshold for treating pest and weed infestations, and protecting natural resources for future use. Farm equipment manufacturers are also adopting sophisticated GPS devices to help farmers and agribusinesses become more productive and efficient.

out with super-wide floatation treads — but that’s just the start. As CAT’s range of skid steers has seen action in arenas from forestry to snow clearance, they’ve learned a thing or two about both riding smoothly over rough terrain and retaining heavy loads while doing it. The engineers behind the 239D have incorporated an advanced fully independent torsion axle suspension system, allowing smooth delivery of power via those big wide treads from CAT’s C2.2 high-torque engine. This, and a comfortable cab for the operator take care of the ‘back end’ — but it’s the option up front which have NATURAL SPREADERS

Now, many rural contractors who wish to expand their operations into land reclamation or clearance are looking to this extra ‘pair of hands’ as an effective tool that offers multiple roles. Take for example the CAT 239D skid steer — a small and compact unit which will be right at home in confined spaces, but which packs an arsenal of tools and a whole lot of hydraulic power. Easy to use and simple to transport, this skid steer can take the place of larger machines where a full sized dozer or front-load digger could either not fit in or could damage the ground. For just this reason, the 239D can come specced

The CAT 239D and it’s fellow compact skid-steers are as handy on the farm as on the construction site

made this kind of machine a real swiss army knife for contractors. As well as the usual buckets and dozer blades people usually associate with skid steers, CAT offer a range of trenchers for drainage work, post hole borers and augers. When it’s time to clear land the brushcutters which the 239D can mount are a terror to gorse and scrub, and can be followed up with stump grinders, mulchers and then

tillers to turn over the soil. Potentially, a combo of these attachments could turn wasteland into productive land using one base machine. There’s also a series of forks and bale grabs, spikes and silage pit defacers which can be a big help when it’s feed prep season. Add it up — and don’t discount the need for that classic bucket setup — and the little CAT skid steer looks like a good all year round proposition.

Beef continues to grow

15

During the past year, New Zealand’s beef cattle herd increased by 2.8 per cent — to 3.6 million head — while the decline in the sheep flock slowed sharply as sheep numbers recovered in key regions after drought and other challenges. The annual stock number survey conducted by Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Economic Service highlights the continued growth in beef production, as farmers move towards livestock that are less labour-intensive and currently more profitable. “The largest contributor to the increase in the number of beef cattle was a five per cent lift in weaner cattle numbers, reflecting the high cost of buying older cattle as replacements and good grass availability. Meanwhile, the size of New Zealand’s beef breeding cow herd did not change,” says B+LNZ Economic Service chief economist Andrew Burtt. “The number of breeding ewes fell in most regions of New Zealand — and by 1.9 per cent overall. The exception was in Marlborough-Canterbury, where there was a small increase (+0.3%) following the prolonged drought. “Ewe numbers decreased 2.6 per cent to 8.7 million in the North Island, while South Island numbers dropped 1.1 per cent to 9.1 million. The decrease in the North Island reflects residual effects of last year’s facial eczema outbreak — nationwide there has been more emphasis on retaining ewe

hoggets, which indicates some rebuilding of the flock is occurring.” Consequently, the national hogget flock is up on last year with numbers increasing 1.7 per cent to 8.7 million, largely due to replacement ewe hoggets being retained on the East Coast to build up flocks, and an increase in Marlborough-Canterbury to take advantage of the improvement in feed supplies after a number of difficult years caused by drought and natural disasters. Mr Burtt says ewes were in good condition at mating, and going into winter, due to feed availability. “Pregnancy scanning of ewes reveals good pregnancy rates in the North Island, but the later season as a result of climatic differences means it’s difficult to generalise about the South Island.” Despite the small decrease in the number of breeding ewes, the lamb crop is expected to be up 1.1 per cent — to 23.5 million — 0.3 million more than last season. “This is the result of several factors, including continued improvements in productivity by farmers leading to better ewe lambing percentages, good feed supplies, and a lift in the number of ewe hoggets mated.”

Advanced technology the best deterrent by Andy Bryenton

The modern home contains more technology than ever before, and that goes double for lifestyle properties — triple for working farms. And that means the technology we use to protect ourselves has also advanced to keep up with thieves as well. While the original tried and true methods of locks, keys and deadbolts still form an advisable line of defense, the front line is often electronic. A deterrent simply by being installed, modern security systems work not by making it difficult to reach precious possessions, but by making it impossible to get away with the crime.

Information is power, and systems such as wireless infra-red cameras which can send live footage direct to a mobile phone promise that no unauthorized activities will go undetected. Similarly, laser ‘tripwires’ set up across driveways and access roads can alert homeowners of the arrival of anyone to the property — whether it’s a tradesperson with an

appointment, an expected friend, or an intruder at 3AM. Only electricians with a special additional accreditation from the police can install certain security measures such as cameras, alarms, motion sensors and other modern means of keeping safe. It takes not just the ability to understand the sometimes complex installation of integrated security technologies — but also an official clearance from the law, as it’s important to know that those who install the last line of defense are on the side of right. Knowing what the police are looking for in video evidence also offers an insight into best protects homes and farms, and also what the courts require if footage is captured that could lead to a conviction. Gone are the days, for example, of blurry and out of focus images stop-starting across the screen.

Today a good camera system can reveal details which may well assist the law in catching a criminal — and crooks know it. Though a coldly pragmatic concern, it’s true that part of the way a good security system works is by advertising its presence. While it would be possible to make every last camera invisible or concealed, letting the bad guys know what’s in store should they trespass on your property can serve as an effective deterrent. After all, even the most foolish criminal knows when it’s best to seek easier targets. The addition of speakers to some camera systems allows a warning to be given in real time, for example — direct from a mobile phone. Being told ‘you’ve been seen, and the police are coming’ is enough to make most burglars run.

RURAL SECURITY

No romanticizing the ‘oldest crime’ by Andy Bryenton

There are some old fashioned notions about stock rustling which come with our pop-culture baggage — lone cowboys, figures in the mist on the Scots border by moonlight, raiders from a more quaint century. There are even primitive clay artworks of cattle rustlers from thousands of years ago. The reality is costly, brutal and dangerous. Stock rustling never went away with the ‘wild west’, and today it still costs Kiwi farmers in excess of $120 million a year. Hardly the stuff of Robin Hood legends. In fact, that estimate is a conservative one. With literally millions of cattle and tens of millions of sheep grazing the pastures of the nation — and food prices driven up by global demand — there are plenty of crooks ready to face the danger and indulge in some backyard butchery. It’s a black market that’s less talked about than drugs or illegal firearms, but it’s a corrosive one — those who lose stock quickly lose trust in their communities, even suspecting neighbours and staff of collusion. Ironically, this strife aids the rustlers. Authorities aren’t talking small numbers picked off here and there, either. In 2016 a herd of 500 cattle were vanished away in the night by what police call a ‘sophisticated gang’ approach. The massive rustling operation in Canterbury was matched by one in Whanganui, where close to one and half thousand lambs were similarly

absconded with. Much of this livestock will turn up as black market meat — cheap, but likely processed in conditions which strain the definition of ‘primitive’. The romantic notion of rustlers taking one or two beasts to home kill and feed the family has been blown away by such brazen robberies, costing in the hundreds of thousands of dollars each. Even worse, many rustling crimes are uninsured and go unreported to police. Despite requiring stock trucks and massive manpower to pull off, even the tow big heists mentioned above still remain mysteries. And this prompts many of those farmers hit to take the law into their own hands. It’s only a matter of time, say sources in hard-hit areas, before a crew of armed rustlers meets a similarly armed farmer and tragedy ensues. The solution is to keep eyes on the land — network with neighbours, keep stock tagged and marked, records up to date and gates locked. People who have information about the illegal killing and sale of meat in New Zealand are encouraged to confidentially ring 0800 693 721. (MPI).

Gains through stabilised races Jakmats, a ground stabilisation product, is proving beneficial for stock moving from farm races to concrete surfaces such as entering the yards of milking sheds.

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

FARMERS - utilise that fertiliser you store in your effluent ponds to give your paddocks a boost • We run two High Horse power pumps and secondary pumps to boost up-flow when needed. • Each unit carries 2km of hose and we have extra hose when needed. This ensures those back paddocks get the fertiliser they need. Specialising in hill country.

“Laying of the JakMats in 2009 has provided stability at the transition point from race to concrete at both the entry and exit to the milking shed”, says Albert Pouwels of Morrinsville who milks 370 cows. “We have seen major improvements over 10 years in animal health, with

lower vet costs and reduced pressure on staff having to handle injured animals, as well as efficient production and savings with race maintenance. “We haven’t had to do any remedial work in that area over the past years as the JakMats have retained the aggregate in place and provided better drainage.

Its a dirty job...but someone has to do it! We operate a specialist drain jetting unit for unblocking and cleaning of: WATER TANK & TROUGH CLEANING New high volume vacuum tank

No more potholes were building in wet weather that made cows reluctant to step onto the race. This has saved us in maintenance costs over the time the JakMats have been laid as we would have had to revisit that area maybe twice in a year. “By laying the JakMats we’ve really improved what happens in the cowshed itself as we’ve got far less carry-over stones coming inside and no interruptions to milking. The cows don’t need to be pushed along to keep them moving. Once we improved the condition of the race we found less lameness with higher milking efficiency. “We work really hard at educating our staff and making sure our races are up to standard, enabling us to operate efficiently in the cowshed. JakMats have been a great part of reducing our cow herd lameness.”

LIVESTOCK

Strength added to Board of Wools Three new appointments to the Board of Wools of New Zealand send a clear message about the drive to do everything possible to accelerate the company’s strategy to deliver sustainable profitable returns for grower shareholders. “The appointments have come as a result of a rigorous search and selection process and many hours were spent finding the right directors who have the required specific skill sets and bring diversity of thinking,” says Wools of New Zealand chair Mark Shadbolt. “They are all well equipped to do the job we need today and importantly, have the ability to look to the future and think globally. “It also sends an important message of confidence in the strategy behind Wools of New Zealand that we have been able to attract directors of this calibre, particularly given we are a young company coupled with the challenges facing the industry as a whole. “Highly respected auditor Ian Marshall (independent board appointed director), will also chair our Audit and Risk committee, and will strengthen the strategic direction and financial acumen around the board table and within the company. “Rebecca Smith (independent board appointed director) and Lucy Griffiths (grower appointed director) were a very deliberate decision to capture real and proven international sales and marketing

expertise and experience alongside the ability to tap into their global market insights and networks.” Mr Shadbolt says the director appointments had to be right given the key role they will play at the board table, in the interests of grower shareholders who are putting their futures in our hands. “These new directors understand strategy, sales, branding and marketing, how to tell our story around the world, and they acknowledge the disciplines and responsibilities important to a 100 per cent grower-owned company. They have all signed up to delivering consistent and greater returns to grower shareholders. “I have no doubt about these people as directors. We have already seen the benefit of their insights and knowledge when they joined us at our last board meeting. “The appointments provide balance and a range of expertise and connections, both globally and locally, that will assist the rapid progress of growth required for Wools of New Zealand to succeed on the world stage.”

RURAL WHEELS ADVERTORIAL

Giving back to nature Dunnys — and what we do during our ‘daily visit’ are a bit like that other subject our mother never talked about — we were given our potty training, the nappies were removed and from then on we did our own learning! And since having our nappys taken off us we have all learned that ‘go and flush’ is what we do. Every day — or at least most days for most of us. That’s a lot of flushing. Imagine for a moment the immense infrastructure that our local councils have provided for this simple convenience — pun intended — where water is either captured in purpose-made dams or taken from existing rivers, piped for miles, chemically treated to drinking standard, and piped for more miles to our place so we can simply push the appropriate flush button — 1 or 2 — to send it for more miles to another treatment plant where it is again reconstituted chemically and piped yet again out to sea — or to a river — or somewhere on the planet! It is estimated that every one of us has flushed away 6,500 litres of treated water a year since our nappies were taken off us. Imagine the proportion of the council rates that we pay that goes to pay for our flush button convenience.

But like so many other aspects of daily living the economic and ecological cost of the ‘daily visit’ has been re-visited. In 2001 a composting toilet was produced in the USA specifically for boats. They called it AirHead. Boats call their toilets ‘heads’ in recognition of the historic use of a simple plank at the head of the ship back in the sailing ship era. ‘Going to the head’ was sometimes a hazardous necessity. And the USA development used air instead of water. Air head. This was certainly a different way to go. The toilet employed a compost medium to process the human waste and it worked. The toilet is effectively its own treatment plant. No water, no pipes, no smell. It is not surprising that the concept has been accepted world wide and has spread from boats to caravans and motor homes. Off-grid living is gaining a huge following world wide and the Airhead toilet offers this community an economic

alternative that is totally in tune with nature without involving the permitting requirements of conventional dunnys. These toilets give back to Mother Earth. They retain our body’s natural

separation of liquid and solid waste and each is treated separately. Both elements benefit the environment when applied correctly as many tiny home and off-grid cabin dwellers are learning. Naturally.

RURAL WHEELS

Practicality and purpose by Andy Bryenton

Since the turn of the millennium, Hyundai have been scoring accolades and awards for their big seven-seat family adventure wagon, the Santa Fe SUV. Offering the same go-anywhere abilities and practical roominess of machines far beyond its very reasonable price bracket, its most recent generation is the very definition of a hard act to follow. So how did the new Santa Fe build on the success of its predecessor? With smart use of space, and a factor not found in many large seven seaters — that’s how. When it comes to the interior of a machine made to pack in the whole family, the devil is in the details. Or rather in this case, a host of little blessings. From the ‘floating’ centre console which allows the front passenger to plug into the stereo and charger without getting in the driver’s way, through to a plethora of handy cubbies and cup holders — primed for today’s skinny energy drink cans as well as American-sized drive-thru ‘tubs’ — there’s clearly been plenty of input into the Santa Fe’s interior from someone who has a rowdy bunch of kids. This is also clear when you take a look at the seating and storage arrangements in back. Doctor Who’s TARDIS may look far bigger on the inside than on the outside, but the Santa Fe is catching up. The tailgate (which can be closed with a button, and stops closing

should there be something in the way) opens to reveal enough space to stow a small castle siege’s worth of supplies. The easiest fold-flat seating system we have ever seen drops the back row for even more space — literally whitewaretransporting volumes of it. And with a couple of latches pulled, back pops a third row that feels as comfy as the first two, with its own dedicated air-con vents and a 12 volt charger for the ubiquitous tablet or phone. So far, so good — but what’s the extra special feature which turns another successfully practical Santa Fe into something more? Well, it’s the fact that this all new, sharper looking model has been made lighter and given a velocitous punch, with a choice of a 2.4 petrol, a 3 litre V6, and a torquey 2.2 litre diesel. That means that the Santa Fe doesn’t just deliver the whole clan to school, work, holidays and sports events. It also delivers smiles for the driver as well — and that’s well worth a look. The addition of a little spice into the SUV mix, with crisp handling to match a suite of practical details, is enough to make this seven-seater stand out from the crowd.

Return of the originator by Andy Bryenton

The 1970s was a dire time for the auto industry — while the United States plunged from muscle-car excess into oil crisis panic, the great automakers of the continent struggled with budget cuts and technical issues. Even the sports cars and supercars of the late 70s failed to measure up to the style and sophistication of older models. But change was coming. In 1976, Volkswagen — largely famous for their long-lasting Beetle at this point — took their small Golf hatchback and equipped it with a fuel injected 1.6-litre engine. The result was a small car that blew the doors off several of its more

‘sporting’ competitors, founding a dynasty of nimble, smile-inducing Golf GTI models down the years. And, of course, a host of imitators. By the mid-1980s nearly every major automaker had a hot hatch in the running, but the benchmark always wore a VW badge. Safety and practicality intruded into the world of the GTI slowly, making later editions bulkier and slower for a time. But all that is over, and the latest Golf GTI is a back-to-the-roots driving machine. Let’s begin with a top speed pushing 249km/h, with a feisty 229 horsepower under the hood. Add in decades of development in crafting a responsive chassis and suspension setup, as well as what is perhaps one of the two best front-wheeldrive designs ever to hit the tarmac (Honda build the other one), and you’ve got a recipe for excitement. Tempered, of course, with a suite of electronic safety measures which ensure thrills without spills. Then again, for some the bold styling and unabashed firepower of the Golf GTI may not be enough.

streets, light on fuel, easy to park — and which can blow traditional sports cars into the weeds on twisty, engaging roads.
