Michelle Sands, HortNZ natural resources and environment manager
“The policy statement recognises that New Zealand needs its best soils for domestic food production,’ says HortNZ natural resources and environment manager, Michelle Sands. “Once you build houses on our best soils, you cannot get them back. With good planning and buffer zones, houses and horticulture can co-exist, which is important for three main reasons. One, so growers can make the best use of available land. Two, so growers can quickly get fresh produce to market and three, so growers have access to workers, given how labour intensive horticulture is.” Michelle says, keeping our best soils for producing food is also important in the transition to a low emissions economy. “As the Paris Agreement states, countries need to find ways to adapt to climate change in a manner that does
not threaten food production. New Zealand needs to ensure that it is able to grow all the fresh and healthy food that it needs in a world where it will be difficult to import fresh food due to climate change. At the moment, poor rules are preventing new vegetable gardens being established to replace land lost to housing in Auckland. “We know the country needs more houses; however, the current situation means that horticulture land lost to houses cannot be replaced. That is why HortNZ is supporting growers in several regional government plan changes, such as Waikato Regional Plan Change 1. “This situation is also why we need central government to guide regional and district councils through policy statements like highly productive land, which recognise horticulture’s critical role in the domestic food supply.”

A $299,000 grant has been given the green light by Waikato Regional Council for work aimed at ensuring the viability of the North Island Kokako on Mt Pirongia. The successful Natural Heritage Fund will help with pest control, and half-fund a project coordinator position to ensure the wellbeing of the kokako population translocated to Mt Pirongia two years ago. The grant is subject to completion of a satisfactory funding deed with Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society. Councillors agreed the society submitted financial accountability reports secondto-none, including kokako monitoring results and evidence of all expenditure. The grant has been welcomed by the chair of the restoration society Clare St Pierre. The community organisation has a range of projects in the park aimed at boosting natural biodiversity. “We are absolutely thrilled about the ongoing support of regional council and its generous endorsement for many teams of volunteers who put in hundreds of hours to bring back the mellifluous sounds of our native songbird to our maunga.” Kokako a once-common species now officially at risk were present on Mt Pirongia until the 1990s when they were removed to join a captive breeding programme at Pukaha Mt Bruce, and subsequently, to Kapiti Island and Tiritiri Matangi Island in the hope, they would breed more successfully in their new abode.

The North Island Kokako at Mt Pirongia
Kaumatua Tom Roa from Purekireki Marae said “Sadly, we faced the difficult reality towards the end of last century when our indigenous songbird was relocated to Tiritiri Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf as well as the Pureora Forest. “Had this not happened — we may have lost this local species forever. Two years ago, out of nowhere, came the melodic sound again of our local Ngati Apakura treasure. She had returned home to her ancestral breeding grounds where she originally came from, and the people were once again filled with emotion.” Thirty birds were successfully translocated to Mt Pirongia from
Waipapa and Pureora Forest. Fourteen birds were returned from Tiritiri Matangi that have the Pirongia genes and are hoped to re-establish themselves, with the support of existing pest control programmes being carried out on the maunga. The funding package will assist in extending the current 1,000-hectare bait station grid by 200 hectares. The end goal is the establishment of a large self-sustaining, genetically diverse group of more than 500 North Island Kokako in the forest park providing an opportunity for the regional community and the 35,000 visitors to Mt Pirongia each year to encounter kokako in their natural environment.

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES
by Ann van Engelen A group of ladies are learning the ropes of the shearing trade as they join together from different occupations to compete at the Hawke’s Bay A&P Show to raise funds for Farmstrong.
“W
e want to support Farmstrong’s vision and get the word out there that there is help for farmers that are struggling,” says Maureen Chaffey. “We are from different industries and have never shorn before. It is very exciting, and we are extremely surprised by the amount of support we have. We are called Woman and Wool — Farmstrong Fundraiser, and we have a Facebook page for people to follow our progress. “We began training in March with shearing contractor Colin Watson-Paul of Shearing NZ, and Pura Smith — agriculture tutor from Turanga Araru. Our training is every Saturday from 7.30am until midday.
“There is an accountant, a police officer, optical technician, wool representative, dental therapist, rural insurance manager and a loans manager, and we will compete against each other on October 23 at the show.” On the competition night, there will also be an auction, and some amazing products have been donated. A chartered fishing trip for six, three tonnes of Ravensdown fertiliser and Farmers Transport have donated the service of a stock truck and trailer unit, just to name a few. “Anaru Wakefield of Lifestyle Shearing Hawke’s Bay is donating to us all of the wool he obtains through his business leading up to our event. We can’t believe the generosity — supporters have been

unreal.” Maureen was brought up on a sheep and beef farm and gained a diploma in wool and wool technology at university that led her into a career in the wool industry. “Growing up, I was always fascinated with all aspects of farming, and it was only natural to end up in the ag industry, and I have never looked back. I help clients increase the value of their wool with wool preparation and shearing regimes. When picking rams to breed from, we not only look at the wool fibre, but also the sheep’s structure for growing meat. “We need to continue preparing for the future of wool. People are thinking differently now and realise natural fibre is better for our health. Woollen products are becoming more sought after and clothes are now easier to care for, and the wool isn’t itchy like in the days gone by. “Wool carpets are so much better for our health as well as blankets — they are natural and warm, and wool doesn’t easily burn. “It keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. Consumers are very aware of environmental factors, and they want more natural products. Kells Wool owner Richard Kells says “we are proud to support such an enthusiastic initiative that has a direct benefit to the rural community. “This matters to us and our own wellbeing should be at the top of everyone’s list. We were inspired by our representative Maureen and her commitment to this project. It is an awesome opportunity to get off-farm and
have some fun and meet new people. Rural mental health and the wellbeing of farmers is important and under the big Farmstrong umbrella we can support each other.” The aim is to let farmers know that it is ‘OK’ to speak out if you are struggling. “Farmers have deadlines to get stock off to the works and weather situations that they have no control over, which can put undue pressure on them and their families. “Through Farmstrong we are seeing good things happening, including awareness and discussions and we are really excited to be involved,” says Maureen. “People are amazed that we are learning to shear a sheep as it is a very physical job, but there is so much more to it as well. “You are working with a live animal and making their life easier by reducing the wool they have to carry, and they can grow better without the weight. “It prevents lice and ‘cast sheep’, which is when they can’t get up due to the weight they are carrying, especially when they are pregnant. “Pre-birthing shearing also means the mother will seek shelter to have her lamb, meaning a better survival rate of newborns. Less wool means easy movement, and shearing doesn’t hurt the sheep — it helps them. “We are all so excited to be doing this and appreciate the support Farmstrong offer people. “As they say on their website when you look after yourself, you are looking after your farm too.”

TOP DRESSING ADVENTURES BY ANN VAN ENGELEN KENT WEIR COMBINES HIS TWO PASSIONS OF AGRICULTURE AND AVIATION EVERY TIME HE CLIMBS INTO THE COCKPIT OF HIS TOP DRESSING PLANE.
“I
grew up in Hawera, where my father worked as a stock agent for 30 years. I had always wanted to be a top dressing pilot and am really passionate about aviation and agriculture. This is one of the few jobs that combine those two things,” said Kent. “I gained my private pilot’s licence while I was at high school and later completed my commercial licence in Christchurch. I joined NZ Young Farmers in 2013 as a way to meet people and make new friends.” Kent is a deputy chief pilot for Super Air and has been an agricultural pilot with the company for five years after starting as a loader driver. “I begin my day with a truck fitted with a hydraulic loader arm placing fertiliser
through an opening in the aircraft’s roof so that I can spread the product on to the property I am heading to.” It is the first of many loads the 27-year-old will spread before the sun sets, which is often a farm on rugged hill country. “Mornings are definitely my favourite time of the day, especially when the winter sun pierces through a gap in the hills. The plane can carry up to two tonnes of fertiliser, and we have certain checks to do before takeoff to make sure everything is correct. “It is a profession, which has many risks, and I take a risk-based approach to every decision I make. These decisions help make sure both the loader driver and I get home safely at the end of the day, safety first is at the

forefront of everything we do.” The King Country Young Farmers member mostly flies the area between Otorohanga and Whanganui. “Most days I leave in the dark and get home in the dark, but the job is very weather dependent,” said Kent. “The majority of our clients are sheep and beef farmers, and we can place up to 400 tonnes of fertiliser in a day for them. Super Air planes are fitted with modern GPS guidance systems, allowing 10 signals per second to be received from up to 25 satellites. The technology enables us to spread fertiliser to an accuracy of one metre, and this helps farmers comply with environmental regulations and obtain the best economic benefit from their fertiliser investment.” Through his participation in Young Farmers, he has been involved in major leadership roles and was recently elected to the NZ Young Farmers Board for a three-year term. “I stepped down as chair of NZYF’s Waikato/Bay of Plenty region in March
after 18 months and then served as the region’s National Committee delegate. NZ Young Farmers has fantastic opportunities for personal development that don’t exist elsewhere for young people. “I am humbled and honoured to be given this privilege and am really looking forward to the challenge. It is pretty amazing that I get to sit at a board table and start my governance journey at such a young age. “My main motivation for standing for the board was a desire to give back to an organisation I care a lot about. I have benefitted greatly from the connections and friendships I have made over the years. A Farmstrong survey involving 985 farmers under 35 showed social activities run by NZYF clubs have a positive impact on the mental wellbeing of the organisation’s members. “It was really heartening to see that survey come out and reinforce something that we anecdotally knew was true. It is a tool that we can use to leverage membership growth, and it
is an extremely strong selling point for our organisation. “As pilots, we are helping farmers to see tangible results on their farms from what we do. You fly over the same farms and after a few years see the positive lift in the property that you have been working with. We are in a really challenging time ourselves, a bit like farmers with public perception, and we need to be careful that we operate by best practice and tell our stories in doing so as well. “The effort that the hill country farmers put in to protect their environment and enhance their farm, the better their farms are. There are visible, tangible and genuine environmental benefits being seen by most hill country farmers, which a lot of town folk won’t fully comprehend. It is in every farmer’s best interest to ensure his farm is sustainable and part of that is environmental best practices, and we are glad to help them succeed.”

A utopia began beetopia by Ann van Engelen Grass Esposti fell in love with bees the moment she opened a beehive some seven years ago and appreciates honey of all types that is available from the Deep South to the Far North.
“I
had a utopia moment when I saw these hard-working insects in their hive and was surprised how serene and calm they were,” says Grass. Grass and her husband Anthony opened Beetopia NZ Ltd in July 2018 with daughter Michelle and the support of Francis and James of F&J Honey NZ. “When we relocated from Italy to New Zealand, we received the wonderful opportunity of managing lifestyle properties and decided to learn about pollination and bees to improve our
orchards’ health and productivity. We have since started an Airbnb and were recently chosen as the first Honey Tasting and Bee Experience in New Zealand. We also support two primary schools providing hives and training on-site, so children gain beekeeping experience and then spread awareness to other students. Children are far more understanding and in tune with nature than we give them credit for. Thus through education and raising awareness about pollinators, in general, our children become advocates for their

environment. We feel inspired children are the future of Aotearoa. “Our Airbnb experience is unique and includes learning about bees and tasting 30 different varieties of honey from the Far North to the deep South, Great Barrier and Niue. You get to taste what clover tastes like throughout New Zealand. It does not always have to be about manuka. There are so many other delicious types of honey that need more of our attention — in fact, our tasting includes rewarewa, pohutukawa, kamahi, beechwood and kanuka. “Thanks to Peter McNab, president of Rodney Bee Club, and Wilf Berger, our apiary officer, I became a founding member of Warkworth Beekeepers Society. Working hands-on with an experienced beekeeper builds confidence and is fundamental when you are a beginner.” Grass says depending on the strength of a hive it can house between 10,000 to 80,000 bees in spring and summer. During autumn the numbers reduce and in winter they can drop back to 10,000. “A strong hive depends on a good queen and good hive management. In New Zealand, we have the active and lively Carniolan black honey bee and the Italian strain, which is an amber colour and more docile to work with. All bees are hard-working, but in winter depending on external temperatures and weather conditions they start work later in the day when it is warmer. They forage for floral resources such as gorse, which is extremely high in pollen. “The foragers explore continuously looking for nectar and pollen and often
die of exhaustion. Nectar is released from flowers when it is above 20 degrees, but this year winter was mild, so the nectar has flowed, and we are getting honey. The foragers cast their bounty back to the nurse bees who store it and feed the growing larvae and brood — thus the cycle continues. “The queen bee’s scent determines social behaviour, maintenance of the hive, swarming, mating behaviour, inhibition of ovary development in worker bees, communication, orientation and defence and much more. The drones are male bees, and their primary function is to mate with virgin queens of other hives, they are only found in hives in spring and summer and do not have a stinger. The worker bees are females that lack reproductive capacity and have many roles within the hive — cleaning, making wax, nursery duties, water gatherers, pollen and nectar foragers and guarding the hive. “Beetopia has held numerous beginner beekeeping courses at our educational centre and training apiary where lessons are hands-on inside a hive. My four-year-old grandson is my youngest beekeeper, and a 75-yearold was the eldest I have taught. I do not let people invest in a hive before they feel confident working with and understanding bees and realising it is like having another family member on board. “It is definitely the best hobby I have ever had, and people everywhere can have bees. It is exciting when you finally reach your utopia, and my utopia is bees.”
Honey bees start work later in the day during winter when temperatures are cold
CROSSINGS CREATE EASY ACCESS AND EFFICIENCY ON DAIRY FARM. Around New Zealand more than 99% of all regular stock crossing points on dairy farms have bridges or culverts. That equates to more than 40,000 stock crossings nationwide. Young dairy farmer Hamish Robinson has carried out a range of projects over the last year to upgrade existing crossings or implement new drainage solutions on the Wyndham farm that he co-owns with his family. “For me it’s about making sure there is easy access to the paddocks for our stock and for all the farm machinery and equipment.” “With one of the pipes I put in there was already a bridge in WHAT: WHERE: PROJECT: WHEN:

How to tackle a kitchen renovation
– KITCHENS – WARDROBES – – TIMBER JOINERY –
A kitchen renovation can be an easy way to update your home, make one of the busiest spaces in your home more functional, and increasing the value of your property. Depending on the scale of the renovation, you can expect disruption for as little as three days. How the process works for smaller renovations: 1. Meet the professionals. Their experience will allow possibilities you might not have considered for your space. 2. Request an obligation-free design and quotation. The designer will discuss layouts and 3D perspectives, brainstorm concepts and assist with selecting finishes. Remember, designs are copyright and stay their property — they can usually be purchased for a design fee. 3. When the details are finalised, and the quotation is accepted, your joiner will start manufacturing. They will be able to give you an indication of lead-time. 4. Ask for working drawings indicating where water and electrical points are required. A schedule can be drawn up to ensure subcontractors know when they are required on-site. It might include a builder for removing the existing cabinetry and refinishing the walls, painter, flooring specialist,

Eco Pod’s a cool concept At Eco Pod Concepts Ltd, we pride ourselves in offering a great product, which is cost-effective and tailored to our clients’ needs. Our Pods are architecturally designed, modular and transportable, which makes them a versatile building solution. They’re built to code and eco-friendly, with off-grid options available. For sale, to rent or rent-to-buy, you can move in within three months of signing up! A young orchard manager in Central Otago, Jacob, bought himself a Pod on a trailer (pictured) and has been living in it for nearly a year. He spoke to us about how things are going. “I’ve just come through the first winter in my Pod, which has been good. The appeal of living in a place like this, for a young person starting out, is it’s hard to get onto the property ladder. Rather than paying rent, the benefit of starting off small is you can put cash in the bank for a long-term solution to work towards buying a place.” Some other clients of ours, Matt, Hannah and Mia were also delighted

with their Pod in Coromandel and said this: “We did a lot of research on transportable baches and couldn’t beat Eco Pods for style, craftsmanship and price. We worked with Steve to shape a pod that was perfect for our section! It was great to sit down with the team and plan everything from the layout, aluminium joinery, to little things like the location of power points and kitchen shelving. Our L pod was delivered just in time for a big family Christmas at the beach, and now we’re super keen to get the second pod underway!” We’d welcome you to visit our show Pod at site SH8 at the Waikato Home and Garden Show and see the quality and functionality of our cabins for yourself!

Councils working together
The Waikato Mayoral Forum has thrown its support behind the region’s councils working together on climate change. The decision was made during the final meeting of the forum for this triennium and followed a report on climate change action in the Waikato region. “Climate change is a real issue with real impacts for our communities, so working together on actions makes good sense. That’s why the proposal was unanimously supported in principle,” said Waikato Regional Council and forum chair Alan Livingston.
“Forum members also noted the opportunity to have their district’s carbon footprint calculated as part of updating the existing Waikato greenhouse gas inventory, and indicated support for contributing to the cost for this work.” Hazard assessments indicate that during the next century, the Waikato region can expect sea levels to continue rising and more extreme weather causing river and coastal flooding, droughts and severe coastal erosion.

“Waikato councils are at the forefront of managing risk to New Zealand’s natural and built environment through mitigation and adaptation actions,” said Waikato Regional Council chief executive Vaughan Payne. “However, councils cannot address these issues by themselves. All parts of society, a diverse range of actions and policy approaches are required to effectively manage the risks climate change presents. “Councils can play an important role by working with communities to reduce emissions. “While all Waikato councils are factoring climate change into policy, regulator y, operational and corporate suppor t areas, it was important to work together with all Waikato sectors to adopt an agreed climate change action roadmap.” The roadmap would step through current and planned Alan Livingston, Waikato Regional Council and forum chair regional activities as part of “The summit will bring the community New Zealand’s transition to net carbon zero by 2050. The forum heard that work together to hear from speakers was underway to organise a Waikato on climate change issues globally, climate action summit being held on nationally and locally, as well as to talk Saturday, September 21 supported by about current local actions and to agree the Waikato Plan Leadership Group and on achievable collective action to inform the Waikato Climate Action Roadmap.” Waikato Regional Council.

Avoid Drink Driving
by Andy Bryenton
If agriculture is one of the oldest technologies and the bedrock on which civilisation is built, then the quest for artificial intelligence is likely the newest, and the one that will change our society the most in the coming decades. Now, this emerging science is blending with agriculture to provide some interesting solutions to old problems. With self-driving cars in the headlines, it’s worth noting that self-driving tractors, harvesters and nutrient fertiliser dispensing machines have been in the field since the earliest steps in this direction in the 1980s. The advent of GPS satellites opened the door for incredibly precise tracking of land-based machines, and the nature of the path taken by most machines in the field (back and forth for complete coverage) lent itself to computer mapping and robot control. The latest machines in this category have taken things considerably further, with new autonomous tractors developed by the likes of New Holland and Case IH. Packing in innovative features such as soil moisture and temperature readers for precise seed delivery during sowing, and route planning tools, which ‘learn’ the farm to conserve fuel and save time. Laser radar and infra-red ‘eyes’ mean that the autonomous tractor can work well into the night, never tiring or losing concentration. One step beyond this is an artificial intelligence system, which already oversees many thousands of acres of farmland from space and aircraft and

drone flyovers. Taranis, named after the old European god of the harvest, is a system that began as a tool to offer farmers information on soil condition, weather, crop performance and other factors to allow informed choices. Its developers added in high precision visual technology, including the hardware to detect a single insect on a leaf from nearly 100 metres off the ground. Drones, aircraft and satellites feed data into the Taranis AI, which is a self-teaching computer ‘brain’ that can learn to spot problems before they occur. Combining oversight like this with robotic tractors and machines could

The grain of civilisation
Maize is a huge part of the agricultural world a vital source of feed-out protein across our dairy and beef herds. It’s also a staple for the production of modern biofuels, with large areas of land in some nations now devoted to growing the crop just for the provision of liquid energy.

Maize had been shaping human society for centuries before the advent of biodiesel and the modern farm. The plant itself, as traded for by European settlers in the New World, was not even a ‘natural’ cultivar, but a carefully bred version of the ancient wild plant teosinte. This plant may have been domesticated up to 6,000 years ago, according to evidence found in the Guila Naquitz Cave in Oaxaca, Mexico. Maize was the cornerstone of empires, as it was able to be harvested, stored and transported. Hun Hunahpu was the Mayan god of maize, and not surprisingly this deity was high up the celestial pecking order. Maize benefits from further selective breeding today. A worldwide programme seeks to produce drought-resistant strains to help feed African nations, for example. Other initiatives include creating stains which resist insect pests and deliver superior yield. Key players in this process are the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, modern-day ‘disciples of Hun Hunahpu’ who invest heavily into studying the genetics, propagation and improvement of maize worldwide.

When the name says it all by Andy Bryenton
Car manufacturers, and to a lesser extent, their counterparts in the agricultural world, spend quite a lot of time coming up with the perfect names to market their products. Not so Krone, who, upon developing the most powerful maize and forage harvester the world has ever seen, took a look at its size and extreme capacity and called it the Big X. The Big X range spans medium to super-sized harvesting machines, but the stand-out top of the range is the Big X 1180. It refers to the staggering amount of horsepower generated by its 12-cylinder Liebherr-derived common rail engine, making it the most powerful in the world right now. With this big size comes some definite economies of scale; for example, the service intervals for components such as the oil filter and valves have been extended. It’s not so much the sheer brute force of Krone’s massive maize and forage machine, which makes it pack such a punch. It’s the clever additions driven by that V12 powerplant. Acknowledging the emerging use of forage crops for biogas, Krone has made it possible to select variable chopping lengths from 4mm to 30mm, without having to touch the chopping drum. For livestock feed applications, where the chop is longer than in biofuel sourcing, Krone’s VariLOC technology does the business, augmented by an efficient corn conditioner. The Big X 1180 uses massive 305mm rollers, with slanted teeth to ensure that every kernel is cracked for greater digestibility. These hefty rollers are carried by an equally hefty spring assembly, and, of course, all powered by that giant Liebherr 12. Precision continues into the cab, with a suite of electronic aids to help fill
Big is not just a name when it comes to Krone’s Big X harvesters
trailers more accurately and at greater speed. The operator has more control over the output stream than ever before, and additional data at hand includes the option to review the crop nutrient and moisture levels. The Big X even has eyes of its own; a photo-optical sensor in the middle of the maize header measures the maturity of the plant and automatically adjusts the length of cut. Between these and a range of other features designed to maximise fuel economy and minimise operator stress and fatigue, the Big X 1180 isn’t just powerful in terms of horsepower. It’s a powerful tool for making the most of a hard-earned crop, from the field to storage and use.

A forest industry leader is calling for serious public debate on the advantages of using gene editing to combat wilding pines and in the broader context of fighting climate change through carbon sequestration. “The Royal Society’s just-released report on gene editing should be taken seriously by anyone concerned about the state of the environment,” says Forest Owners Association president Peter Weir. “The Royal Society has highlighted the problem of wilding conifers, where, despite the millions of dollars spent on a control programme, these tree weeds continue to spread from old farm shelterbelts, old catchment board soil conservation plantings and old state forests, onto land where they are not wanted, including our native forests. “If the fertility was switched off in these trees through a gene edit, then not only would the spread of wildings from new plantations be curtailed, but as the

Royal Society quite rightly points out, the tree would divert more energy into growing wood. That adds to the carbon dioxide absorbed from the atmosphere and helps combat climate change.” He says the current regulatory regime around gene editing in the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act is one of the most restrictive in the world. “Not only that, the view of the Environmental Protection Authority, which administers the act, is that there should be a zero-risk oversight, and that is contrary to the expressed view of the High Court in 2011. “There is some research already on sterile wildings, but we are caught with an EPA requirement that the experimental trees are destroyed as soon as the cones appear, so we can’t confirm we are producing sterile trees. Without that proof, we are not going to be allowed to release them. That is crazy. “If the EPA persists in its attitude that the risks of not conducting a particular piece of research and using the result are irrelevant, then the government has
Peter Weir, Forest Owners Association president
an obligation to direct the EPA as an agent of the Crown to balance risks of gene editing against the risk of not researching that gene editing.”

Time to get that prostate check! Blue September is all about raising awareness, and fundraising to support men and their families living with prostate cancer. Organise a Blue Do and get family, friends, mates and colleagues together to have some fun, and share the message.
Here are some critical reasons for men over 50 to get a prostate check: One in eight men will get prostate cancer It is the number one cancer in Kiwi men — more than 3,000 are diagnosed every year One man is diagnosed every three hours of every day of the year It is the third-highest cancer killer of Kiwi men — more than 650 every year. Currently, there are more than 40,000 Kiwi men who have been challenged with prostate cancer at some stage in their lives. Men with a family history of prostate cancer are at higher risk and testing should begin at 40 years. Research shows that our rural men in New Zealand
are not good at getting checked. That needs to change. Early detection is the key. Don’t wait for symptoms. A recent survey has shown that 61% of men diagnosed had no symptoms, so getting that routine check is very important. It can save your life. Family members can be a great incentive and encouragement for the men in their family to go to the GP and get a check. Don’t leave it to the men — they are often a bit slack in looking after their health. If they won’t go to get a check themselves, make an appointment and get them along. Find out more and register your Blue Do at blueseptember.org.nz.

ADVERTORIAL
Should I take coenzyme Q10? I recently wrote about coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). I was surprised at the amount of contact from readers on the subject of CoQ10, especially from those wanting help dealing with the side effects of cholesterol-lowering medication. Studies show that statins can reduce circulating CoQ10 by as much as 50%. The side effects are so common they are called ‘statin myopathy’. The main side effects are muscle and tendon weakness, which can be felt as muscle stiffness and pain. The effect on nerves can impact memory and mood and comment about general lethargy. In most cases, two months of a quality CoQ10 will reduce these side effects and allow people to get the benefits of the medication without side effects. The chemical structure of CoQ10 allows it to move high energy electrons within our cell mitochondria where energy is made. CoQ10 collects these electrons and transfers them to an enzyme called ATP synthase to make the energy we need. I prescribe CoQ10 for several reasons most commonly for statin support. I also add CoQ10 for those fatigued without medical causes and for those with cardiovascular, autoimmune and neurodegenerative problems. For example, I include
at least 100mg for those with Polymyalgia Rheumatica and higher doses for those with MS. For statins support, I use a high quality patented US CoQ10 and for inflammatory problems my mitochondrial support formula that includes high-grade Kaneka CoQ10 with a number of energy co-factors. It is interesting that the first improvement felt by those with these conditions is a lift in energy and general wellbeing. Those with inflammator y conditions, especially autoimmune problems, should be working to a personalised diet and supplement plan complementary to their regular medical treatment. Most people feel a real difference within three months. For more information give me a call or email. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. DAIRY ADVERTORIAL
Feeding the farms by Neil Burndred
Since its inception in 1987, Takanini Feeds Ltd has remained a New Zealand- owned family business. The original focus of the company was supplying lucerne chaff to the equine industry. Due to the dust created by the lucerne operation, the company changed direction selling the chaff cutter and installing a 10-bag mixer to make textured feed. That coincided with the change in the equine industry from oat and chaff feeding to trainers using textured feeds. We started manufacturing calf meal for local farmers, and as they told their
neighbours, calf feed became a big part of our production. We then purchased a Gehl two-tonne mixer, which was driven by an old Ebro tractor. Within two years, we were at maximum production and finally built an eight-tonne vertical mixer and retired the Gehl and tractor. About this time, we had a wet winter and dairy farms north of Auckland turned into swamps.

Cows and farmers were struggling with the mud, and suddenly we found ourselves making many tonnes of rolled barley mixed with molasses. None of the existing mills could cope, and everyone just produced as much as they could to try and help — this was our introduction to the dairy industry. We added two more eight-tonne mixers in our factory, and during this time, we began to see the equine business decline and the dairy industry grow.
Today we operate from our manufacturing site at Mangatawhiri where we operate a pellet mill and a separate, brand new textured feed plant. We operate our own fleet of both auger trucks and curtain sider trucks, enabling us to provide a top on-farm delivery service. Our clients can pick up the phone and talk directly with us — the benefit of dealing with a New Zealand familyowned business.

WHEELS
Setting a new benchmark by Andy Bryenton
When Can-Am told us that their 2019 Outlander ATV would be more capable, more powerful and more precise than ever, we knew they had a tall order to fill. Then again, the modern era of automotive design has given us some surprises in this department, with new models surpassing their forebears in ways, which we could not have predicted. Indeed, the upgraded 2019 iteration of Can-Am’s popular farming quad looks the part. Fresh angles and a robust, ready-for-anything attitude dominate the design aesthetic, but then again, these machines have always looked sharp. It’s what’s under the skin that really counts. With the 2019 reimagining of the Outlander formula, there have been some significant upgrades. The first of these is power, which is now available from a single overhead cam liquid cooled v-twin. With eight valves (the magic number of four for each piston) and plenty of low down torque, you’ll see 48 horsepower from this mill, and feel it, too, thanks to progressively and automatically locking differentials to ensure less slip and more grip when things get muddy. The best is saved for the steering and suspension, however. With true independent rear suspension allowing the back wheels to travel directly up and down with no diagonal ‘butterfly’ effect, the back end seems planted like that of a rally truck. The front has also been tuned up, with improved dive-control geometry and a hefty amount of suspension travel,
combining to make tight cornering far less stressful. What’s even better, perhaps, is the icing on the cake. All these
improvements add up, making a better all-rounder than the outgoing Outlander; but the cost has not gone up. For some models, it’s now more accessible than
ever. That’s the power of massive manufacturing and a testament to the popularity of the Outlander brand worldwide.
