Tim Mackle, DairyNZ chief executive

“The Vision is Clear: Let’s Improve our Waterways is now streaming across the country, showing the work being done by dairy farmers and other New Zealanders to benefit rivers, streams, lakes and beaches. It calls on all Kiwis to follow the movement, get involved and look after New Zealand’s waterways,” says DairyNZ chief executive, Tim Mackle. The campaign can be heard on the radio, seen on Facebook and Twitter, and read about in the paper. “We are encouraging people to visit thevisionisclear.co.nz, which was launched on November 1. The Vision is Clear got off to a great start and the first week’s Facebook post reached 327,669 people, and 93,000 viewed the video in the first five days. Articles will continue to roll out in December, reviewing the state of all New Zealand waterways and the research underway by the dairy sector to improve water quality. He says New Zealand’s dairy farmers, have been doing great work to look after their waterways and this needs to be showcased.

“DairyNZ is also working on solutions to reduce dairying’s impact on the environment. We all know there’s more work to be done and we know most of you have invested heavily in this — not only financially, but also personally — with your time, energy and passion.” He says dairy farmers can’t do it alone as water quality is affected by many other users. “We knew we had to do something differently, and so we took a leadership position — ‘why not get the whole country doing their bit, as well as dairy farmers?’ — to work together to improve the state of our waterways. “We are really excited about The Vision is Clear and how it could change the way New Zealanders think about their own impact on water and how they can care for their local waterways. To be involved go to thevisionisclear. co.nz, view the videos and share the stories on social media. “The ‘story of a river’ video is one to look out for. If everyone plays their part, it all adds up to cleaner waterways for New Zealand.”

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES December 2018

Improving forestry scheme The first set of improvements to the Emissions Trading Scheme, New Zealand’s main tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, has been announced following extensive public consultation. A new permanent post-1989 forestry activity within the ETS will replace the current Permanent Forestry Sink Initiative. The changes will not come into effect until the amendments to the Climate Change Response Act 2002 go through parliament and current participants in the PFSI will not be adversely affected by the conversion. “The ETS is one of the key levers that will move New Zealand towards a low emissions economy and ensuring the scheme is fit-for-purpose is critical to our goal of planting at least one billion trees by 2028,” said forestry minister, Shane Jones. “It should be able to deliver effective emissions pricing, be simple and credible to encourage new forests and discourage deforestation. Cabinet has approved the first set of improvements, which includes the addition of permanent forests to the scheme. It will provide more incentives for landowners to integrate trees into their landscapes, enable them to them to diversify their income while also providing long-term environmental benefits. “We are making good on our promise to encourage more forestry and make better use of land, especially on erosionprone land.” Mr Jones says by establishing a permanent forest with indigenous or exotic species; landowners will be able to better optimise their non-productive

agricultural land and enjoy income from the sale of New Zealand units, while also increasing biodiversity and reducing erosion. “Other changes are geared towards helping reduce both complexity and the barriers to forest owners being part of the ETS. These provide a solid foundation for future planting efforts, which could see us double the number of trees planted.” Changes to offsetting and tree weed provisions will increase landuse flexibility while ensuring that the ETS supports afforestation and discourages deforestation. The changes also address a longstanding issue, which relates to multiplyowned Maori land and the challenges they face accessing exemptions from pre-1990 deforestation liabilities. “We have listened to extensive feedback, and I think forest owners, businesses and landowners will welcome these changes, which will come into effect after the final round of ETS improvements has been made next year. We have also consulted on a new accounting option for post1989 forests in the ETS — known as averaging. Cabinet will consider this and other improvements early next year.”

Growing asparagus is a crop the Boyd family have turned into a thriving business venture and now the company, Boyds Asparagus Industries Ltd helps others on the road to success with the highly nutritious vegetable.

“M

y wife Kay and I started growing asparagus in 1980 by default. We were going to have a combined orchard but decided on boysenberries and asparagus — but the harvesting times clashed, so we dropped the berries and concentrated on asparagus,” says Alex Boyd. “Asparagus comes from the Greek word meaning sprout or shoot and is a perennial member of the lily family, which includes onions, leeks, and garlic. The cultivation began more than 2,000 years ago in the Eastern Mediterranean area.” In 1997, along with 29 other growers, the family began packing under the

Boyds trademark. “We guaranteed our asparagus would be top-quality, picked and bunched fresh daily and we established ourselves as one of the leaders in growing and supply all the main supermarkets here in New Zealand. “We grow approximately 180 hectares of the vegetable around the district and pack around 800 tons annually. During the season from September to December we contract some 200 pickers and employ 100 staff in the packhouse. “Seventy per cent goes to the local market with the balance exported to Japan or the USA.” Asparagus is grown by seed in a nursery for the first year, and then the

crowns are lifted and then planted in the fields. “You let it grow for the first two years so the plant can set itself up for a good production capacity and the next two years you harvest it lightly. Being a perennial, each plant grows for up to 15 years, and in full production, we get six to seven tonnes per hectare each season.” When the spear reaches 23cm in length, with a tight head and good green colour, it is harvested, and more spears appear. “These are washed, trimmed, graded and packed within hours of harvesting and transferred to the chillers immediately to guarantee a superior flavour and freshness. Each plant keeps putting up spears for 90–100 days and is harvested by hand. Near the end of October when the spring weather warms the ground temperature, a spear can grow 20cms in 24 hours hence you have to pick daily. “There are not many growers around anymore. Over the past few years, our main export to Japan has been taken over by Australia due to the cost of freight and production costs. Here you have to invest around $12–14k per hectare to establish a crop, which then takes time to get into commercial production growth. beds, weed and pest control and with arranging and managing pickers during the harvest period. “Asparagus is one of the most friendly crops to grow. We don’t use insecticides, but we do use a pre-emergence spray to stop the weeds growing. Birds don’t worry it — but rabbits and possums can be a problem, however they can be controlled quite quickly. “Our son Ashley is involved in the business, and we are committed to food safety, and all of our suppliers hold either NZGap or Eurepgap Certification. Boyds Asparagus is currently accredited to the Woolworths Quality Assurance, BRC and NZGap food safety programmes. “Asparagus is very good for you, it is high in protein, low in carbs and calories and is high in potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and iron. We

recommend everyone buy a little often because fresh is best. “Remember the key in keeping the quality good is chilling the product as soon as it is picked, buying a little amount often. Keep them in the fridge when storing at home and eat it as quickly as possible.” To cook asparagus Alex says trim the spears to the desired length, bring a pot of salted water to a rapid boil and add the asparagus. When the water reboils take the vegetable out and put on a plate with butter, salt and pepper. “It is delicious, and I enjoy it on a thin slice of fresh white bread and butter.”

aymond grew up in Whangamomona and became a shearer, leasing his first property at 18 years of age. Janet grew up on a dairy farm and became a registered nurse. “We purchased the family farm in 2004, and bought our first Suffolk at the Stratford sales and acquired 300 ewes from two long-standing registered studs. We culled hard, keeping only high performing ewes and lambs and are seeing good results.”

“We have managed to breed animals that can handle hill country pressure and produce fast growing lambs that are sent to the works at weaning. We buy the best breeding rams, and if they don’t meet our expectations, we cull them regardless of the cost.” Raymond and Janet culled a ram costing $6,700 because they were not happy with his feet. “We want to breed good traits — because using animals with poor traits costs you in the long run,” said Raymond.

Mangaohae Station is home to 8,800 stock units “The rocks provide shelter for lambing and spring calving starts on September 10, with the two-year-old heifers on the flats. Mixed age cows calve in mid-October, with the ewes in the easier paddocks. We rear 60–80 beef calves, buy in 200–300 weaners and sell 15-month-old steers in December– January at 450–500kgs live weight. “We farm as a family with our daughters, 12-year-old Leah and 10-year-old Tessa. their growth rates match, or better, the Suftex lamb. “Our stud ewes run separately from the commercial at lambing and mating. We believe running in large mobs with the commercial ewes, and selective breeding has contributed to increasing hardiness and intend to breed a terminal sire that’s lambs will grow well on hill country. “Our best Suftex rams are used over 1,200 Romdales, with lambing starting on September 6. We wean and ‘first fat pick’ around December 20 for singles and January 3 for twins. “Recent years with good spring grass growth 75 per cent of our Suftex/ Romdale docked lambs went to the works at weaning averaging around 17– 18kgs carcase weight. We are seeing great results of using good growth rate terminal and Romdale sires.” Mangaohae is in the Waitomo limestone area with rocky limestone outcrops and Mairoa ash soil, which can dry out quickly in summer. “The area is very wet in the winter and spring, with an average rainfall of 3,200mls yearly. The station was low fertility at purchase with P levels of six on the hill and up to 15 on some flats, with a low pH of 5.1–5.4. We invested in capital fertiliser with 400kgs of super and 2.5 tonnes of lime per ha. Fertility has increased with regular fertiliser and lime applications, and we are making good progress,” Janet says. Ewe lambing is spread across the station to reduce losses due to spring storms.

“In 2012, the opportunity came to purchase Mangaohae station west of Piopio. Our neighbour purchased our Whangamomona farm, and the community welcomed us here. This was wonderful, as our reservation was losing the amazing community support that exists in Whangamomona.” Mangaohae is approximately 1,000ha with 800ha-effective. They winter 8,800 stock units including 3,350 Romdale ewes, 400 stud Suffolk, Suftex and Texel, 1,000 ewe hoggets and 150 ram hoggets along with 190 South Devon cross breeding cows, 130 18-month heifers and steers and 440 yearling steers and heifers. “Our Romdale ewes have scanned in lamb at 190 per cent for the past three years with stud ewes scanning at 175 per cent — our hoggets scan at 90–100 per cent,” says Janet. “Our first three summers were very dry and financially hard. We paid $200 for ewes with our first lambs only averaging $60 due to the dry. We kept costs to a minimum, and Raymond’s father Wayne helps at busy times like shearing and docking, and we recently employed a school leaver, Lochie Griffin to lighten the load and allow us time off. “We have increased our stud ewe numbers and included Suftex and Texels. Suftex are half Suffolk and half Texel — our most sought-after ram.” It produces a high yielding carcass, extra hindquarter meat with early maturing high growth rates and larger frame. “This year we will have our first Charollais-Suffolk cross and hope

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Ann van Engelen It is the festive season and the time of year when families gather to celebrate the birth of Christ, or the summer break and seeing the past year out and new year in or reflecting on years gone by.

T

he Kiwi tradition is that of decorating a tree, and many choose a naturally grown specimen as opposed to artificial, bringing childhood memories back to life, or creating new family traditions and keeping things alive whilst the smell of fresh pine permeates the air. In December 2000 Eric, Jessica and Isaac Munro went to pick a tree from their grandparents’ Christmas tree farm, and that was the beginning of a new adventure. “I was three years old, and we decided it would be good fun to throw a couple of off-cut trees in the back of the car and sell them on the front verge, and probably to mum and dad’s surprise, they sold,” says Eric. “The following year we got more trees and managed to sell them as well, and

from then on we started towing a garden trailer to South Head each December and stacking it with trees. “The name Vinter Christmas trees came about because we live on Vinter Terrace and it is a play on the classic phrase ‘A Winter Christmas’, which we never get here, so it is our little way of getting a winter Christmas. Credit for the idea goes to our neighbour Lesley Birch. My parents grew up on farms and mum’s dad Brian McLeod was a sheep and beef farmer and transitioned to grow 100 per cent Christmas trees. In his biggest year, he sold about 30,000 trees. Grandpa used to plant 30cm high seedlings by hand, and as they grew over the next three years he would hand prune them with a machete into the shape he wanted. Whenever we went there he would be pruning and come in

smelling like pine. The smell still brings back memories for us. He has retired now, and when we get a load of trees, we stop past his retirement village and tell him what we are doing.” The general sized tree takes three years to grow, and the big ones in shopping malls can take six years. In 2004 the boys’ grandpa stopped planting trees, and by 2006 they purchased his last one. “Luckily the neighbouring farm also grew Christmas trees, and we now get our stock from there. Grandpa and this neighbour had been there 80 odd years,” says Eric. “Each year the business grows, and we have had to upgrade the trailer twice now. Dad made us up some painted plywood signs, and we still do that today. We sell approximately 800 per year now from outside our house. The money we make allows us to pursue our sporting and academic goals. “We are very grateful to the people who buy from us. Last year I travelled to Serbia and Montenegro for water polo, and Isaac is heading off to Uni this year, and the funds will help his weekly needs. “We have found the experience useful when applying for jobs as it has given us people skills and we have learnt the importance of repeat business. “It is nice for sellers to have people wander amongst the trees and choose the tree perfect for them. It is interesting to see if parents let the children choose the tree no matter what it looks like or if they direct their choice. Using a fresh tree is a great family tradition especially if you go back to the same person each year. We have families who have been our clients for 10 to 12 years — they take the same photo with their Santa

They are best in a cool spot out of the direct sunlight and always use clean, fresh water and make sure there is always water as it will draw up to four litres in the first few days. “Grandpa did a neat thing starting his Christmas tree farm, and for us, the pine smell brings back happy memories. I am now 21 years old, Isaac is 18 and Jessica is 23.

Chondroitin: forgotten hero by John Arts

(Part 2) Last edition we looked at a major research study (Wildi et al, 2011) that confirmed the benefits of high dose Chondroitin sulphate (CS) for joints affected by osteoarthritis. This week we dig a little further. I have no doubt that the correct dose of highgrade CS is the number one natural compound to help stabilise joints affected by osteoarthritis. As an example, I have been helping a man with osteoarthritis in both knees. The pain levels had become quite debilitating. We started with a booster dose of 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin with the same amount of glucosamine and 400mg of high potency curcumin (from turmeric). After three months the pain level had significantly reduced and is now mobile again. More recent research from the British Medical Journal (May 2017) compared high-grade Chondroitin with common anti-inflammatory medication and found that 800mg of CS was beneficial. Researchers commented: “This compelling benefitrisk profile, in light of the known clinical risks associated with chronic usage of NSAIDS and paracetamol, underscores the potential importance

of pharmaceutical-grade [chondroitin sulfate] in the management of knee [osteoarthritis], especially in the older population requiring longterm treatment.” The question is how can it help? What does it do to arthritic joints? Researchers have found that CS has multiple benefits. Firstly it helps regulate inflammatory processes within the joint capsule. Secondly, and more importantly, it helps specialised cells that reside in cartilage called chondrocytes. CS improves the ability of chondrocytes to secrete and repair cartilage. It comes as no surprise as CS is an important component of cartilage. I have worked with so many people with osteoarthritis that I am genuinely surprised if we cannot get an improvement within three months. WATER MATTERS The heart of a water system Be it for farm or lifestyle block trough supply or irrigation, swimming pool operation, or household supply from a rainwater tank or bore, mechanical and electric water pumps are an integral part of rural life. In the summer months, they often work overtime. The pump shed is the heart of any water supply system, and the mechanism inside needs to be at the top of its game creating the right pressure and flow for the amount of water required for a given task. Periodic testing of pump

performance and ensuring maintenance is key to operational performance. Developing a pump maintenance checklist will keep your pump functioning efficiently and trim down your everyday expenditure for upkeep and give some

protection against a loss of water supply. First on the list is a frequent check to make sure that the speed of the water pump corresponds with the output in horsepower. Also, examine the water system for leakages, fissure or wear and tear. Regular maintenance can prevent damage and reduce costs of replacement parts. Less frequently, it might pay for a monthly examination to check and repair seals, oil bearings to manufacturers specifications, confirm that the water pump is secured firmly against over vibration and also check plugs and wiring on electrical systems. If you are a typical kiwi operator, it’s pretty certain you can perform daily and monthly maintenance personally.

Once a year, it probably pays to call in a professional, if only for peace of mind, and even more important, to make sure you are covered by your insurance requirement. Technicians are trained in their field to fine-tune, restore or repair the bearings, drive belt or any other faulty part. In addition, a technician needs to carry out a vibration and temperature examination to make sure that the motor is running in peak condition. Steady maintenance to avoid preventable damage and costs is a nobrainer. In addition, you can improve water pump performance in a number of ways such as adding a small booster pump, perhaps increasing household pressure from a rainwater tank, or cutting back bigger pumps that are not necessary and altering the speed of the pump so it is more proficient. Your own maintenance coupled with expert advice once a year should go a long way towards having trouble-free water supplies, be it for a household, a pool or something further afield.

Coping with shortages It is often taken for granted that fresh, clean water will always be available, but many rural people are caught out as water shortages become a reality during summer. Water is a vital part of everyday life, and people don’t always realise only a certain amount is in our tanks, rivers, streams and dams, especially those who have recently moved from urban areas. Sometimes demand is greater than supply with an average New Zealand family uses 250 to 300 litres of water for each person daily. In a typical household, the bathroom, kitchen and laundry use 25 per cent of the daily volume with the toilet using 30 per cent and the last 20 per cent used outdoors. It is also important to know that under the Animal Welfare Act it is the owner’s legal responsibility to ensure any animals in their care have adequate water and find supplied. When watering your garden in the summer remember a hose running at full volume uses 2,000 litres of water an hour and water low to the ground and slow when it is cool and calm, not in the heat of the day or in windy weather when water will evaporate rather than soak in. Watering by hand or on an irrigation system controlled by a timer is best as moveable sprinklers are the least effective for saving water. Check your water tank levels and order extra water early from your water delivery person to ensure your daily life is not interrupted.

PROFESSIONAL TANK SANITATION SERVICE:

Repair any leaking taps, tanks and pipes early as a small drip uses more water than you think. Sixty drips a minute uses 21 litres a day — over a year that is some 7,644 litres wasted. Catching rainwater in suitable containers is a good way to provide water for the garden and chickens. Remember to keep your house gutters and roof clean to stop debris and rodent or bird waste entering

your tank and check if your tank needs cleaning annually and ensure regularly that possums and birds have not fallen in and decayed. Water matters most as it is needed for a healthy life for animals and humans alike. Taking care of it is one of the import aspects of ensuring your farm, lifestyle block and household run smoothly.

• We will store up to 10,000 litres of your water • Drain your tank and remove the sludge • Water blast the internal surfaces • Wash with a chlorine solution • The stored 10,000 litres of water is filtered and returned to your tank which means no expensive water cartage • The efficient process means your treated tank is back in service QUICKLY! “The Department of Health recommends for most tanks, yearly draining and scrubbing out.”

Amanda comes from a nursing background and now runs the family business alongside her husband, Bernard. “Bernard is the third generation of his family to run the business, and we look set to continue into the future, with our 21-year-old son Matt already a key member of the team, and our daughter Louise helps me part-time. Bernard and Matt have logging in the blood. Logging is all Matt has ever wanted to do — from spending time in the forest with his grandfather as

a toddler, he is now halfway through a two-year level six diploma in forest management at Toi Ohomai, formerly Waiariki Institute of Technology, Rotorua. “Matt has been working in the forest since leaving school and plans to gradually move into a management role at Horne Logging. “He is already bringing new management skills into the business,” says Bernard. “We are both totally comfortable in the heart of a harvesting landscape. My biggest satisfaction comes from getting the job done and making sure the crews are happy and safe. We operate two logging crews with approximately 17 staff.” The company’s commitment to training has led to multiple awards, including

The company also provide a staff lunch and health and safety meeting at least once a month at their base in Masterton. “Our philosophy is basically to treat people the way we would like to be treated ourselves,” says Amanda. “One of my underlying values is that having an education leads to more choices. We want to encourage people to grow in their jobs. All of our guys are trained to be multiskilled and can take on a number of jobs in the forest, but we also encourage them to refresh their training and upskill.” Training is ongoing, and programmes are organised with the help of Russell Riley, the regional Competenz forestry

manager, and NZQA assessor John Reid. “Dan Kyle has now also qualified as an assessor, so comes in very useful as part of our training team. In addition, we now employ one of our crew members Justin Carswell in a full-time health and safety role,” says Amanda. “It does annoy me that forestry workers lack recognition for their high skill levels. “People can be quite dismissive of forestry as a career, but there are lots of opportunities and all of them involve different skills.” Amanda says that all the effort put into staff management and training doesn’t mean that Horne Logging is immune from the challenges of finding and retaining good staff. “It is one of our biggest day-today headaches, staff shortages are

widespread throughout the forest industry,” says Bernard. We would really love to see more women in the industry, including out in the forest, there are plenty of jobs women can do. They see things with a different set of eyes and having even one woman in a crew could make a huge difference to crew culture. We think the industry needs a bit of a shake-up, and to become more flexible in its approach to employing women.” The family have a long list of the blocks to be logged over the next few years in the eastern Wairarapa. “There will be no shortage of work for Horne Logging, and as a family our goal is to continue our commitment to training excellence wherever we are working.”

Reducing environmental footprint Dairy farmers around the world are making significant progress in lowering the greenhouse gas emission intensity of milk production according to new analysis with New Zealand farmers achieving positive results. “It is clear that while New Zealand dairy farmers must continue their ongoing efforts to boost productivity and reduce their environmental footprint, on the global emissions and food security front the best thing we can do is to help dairy farmers in developing nations get to where we already are,” says Federated Farmers climate change spokesperson, Andrew Hoggard. Analysis from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation that was presented to delegates to the COP24 climate change negotiations in Poland recently show that between 2005 and 2015 there was a 30 per cent jump in

Pay attention!

global milk production. That is from a 14 per cent increase in the number of dairy cows, but also a 15 per cent improvement in yield each cow - now 2,514 litres/cow for each lactation. “The figures, from a study commissioned from the Dair y Sustainability Framework, show that while total greenhouse gas emissions from the dairy sector rose about 18 per cent during the decade to 2015, emission intensity per kilogram of product dropped 11 per cent, from 2.8 to 2.5kg of carbon dioxide equivalent. Without these efficiency improvements made by the sector, total emissions

Andrew Hoggard, Federated Farmers climate change spokesperson

would have increased by almost 38 per cent to deliver the same amount of milk. “We need to keep in mind that as well as climate change pressures, we have an equally pressing need to feed a world population predicted to increase by another 2.7 billion people by 2050. For billions of people around the world, milk and cheese is an affordable, accessible and nutrient-rich food supplying energy, protein and a range of micro-nutrients. “In terms of GHG emissions, the production efficiency of New Zealand

dairy farmers is one-third to one-half better than that achieved in many other countries. Combating global warming is a planet-wide mission. “We will strive for more gains in our own dairy sector, but the real difference we could make is helping some other nations with their production efficiency, including sharing the knowledge we gain from the world-leading Kiwi scientists and researchers working on these thorny global warming and climate change issues.”

ON THE FARM

Farm tutorial workshops Reproduction is not obligatory for the dairy cow. At its most basic, it is what the cow does with energy left over from maintenance, production, growth, activity etc, so, six-week in-calf rate (ICR) is a good reflection of overall farm health, welfare, productivity and sustainability. Not once this century has national sixweek ICR got anywhere near target — in fact, it has never reached 70% despite some significant manipulation in too many cases. Across all farm systems, localities and breeds, herds do exceed 75% six-week in-calf rates without interventions. Contrary to popular belief, numerous studies worldwide show that higher producing herds (relative to farm system, nutrient input and kilograms of live weight) have better reproductive outcomes than lower performing herds. From the cows’ point of view, getting pregnant when survival is threatened because of issues with energy balance, health and stress, is not a good idea. Regardless of the farm system, sire, location, breed, the basic unit of productivity is the cow and her feed conversion efficiency. At Dairy Production Systems Ltd, we do not care what system you operate — that is very much an individual farmer choice — but we do care that you do it well while optimising the welfare of animals, people and environment. Our clients operate through the whole range, from genuine system one (grass only, no purchased feed or

grazing off) right through to five plus, including certified organic farms, and those on OAD all season but in all cases, sustainable success depends on understanding the cows, how they function and what they want. It is not a fluke that the average sixweek ICR across our client base does reach target with minimal intervention (many exceed 75%). There is a strong correlation between six-week ICR, comparative stocking rate and profitability. Well-fed, well managed, happy productive cows make happy,

profitable farmers. Optimising feed conversion efficiency (where the feed went, and how well it went) is dependent on well-managed cows and feed, which always includes pasture (grazed grass is still the single biggest individual feed across all farm systems). Optimising feed efficiency also means less wastage of nutrients, ie nutrients turned into milk or meat cannot be excreted to the environment. How do top farmers achieve these outcomes? Come to our cow nutrition and management courses to find out.

“To National’s Ian McKelvie and Labour’s Kieran McAnulty — thank you for listening to your constituents. Full marks to parliament and the Primary Production Committee.” Mr Anderson says what was originally proposed through the Livestock Rustling Amendment bill had not gone far enough to discourage livestock theft. “This SOP now delivers on what we asked for. The cost of livestock theft to the farming community is incredibly daunting and can kill a business.” Rustling ranges from the basic opportunist to highly organised professional operations. “Farmers currently feel powerless to counter livestock theft. Now that the legislation is coming into force to effectively punish these criminals, it would be good to see the rural police resources to back it,” he says. “To the farming public, we need to get our reporting up on stock rustling so the police can act. I understand it can be daunting to report criminals, especially when it comes to organised crime, but

“The two new offences of theft of livestock or other animal, and unlawful entry to land used for agricultural purposes, will give power back to farmers, the police and the judiciary when it comes to dealing with offenders,” says rural security spokesperson, Miles Anderson. Federated Farmers thanks the justice minister Andrew Little over his quick moves to protect farmers from livestock rustlers. “The credit for this work goes to many. First of all, a thank you to my predecessor Rick Powdrell. A huge amount of work from Rick went into getting rustlers viewed as a serious threat to rural communities.

It also has a level floor and toe kicks to make fishing comfortable and safe. “It is a superb sport fishing boat, and one owner fishes 26km offshore and says the boat is more than capable and comfortable for their needs. The reserve buoyancy in the pontoons is a massive 500 per cent of displacement, and this doesn’t encroach on the size of the interior at all.” Jon and Elly source and supply all types of trailer parts and all agricultural equipment parts including wheels and tyres. “We repair boats and trailers and can rebuild things from the ground up and supply all other components when needed. “We repair and manufacture cowshed rails, hanging steel gates, dog kennels and boxes, and install certified tow bars as well as custom build trailers. “We also supply beadlock rims for four-wheel drive enthusiasts so when you lower the tyre pressure, you get

At a time of the year when top ten lists and awards ceremonies abound, one of the toughest decisions has to be the coveted title of car of the year. Here in New Zealand that choice is informed by a varied and challenging driving environment — and auto manufacturers never make it easy to select a winner, with new offerings striving to excel in areas as varied as fuel economy, environmental impact and sheer luxury. However, there can be only one. Unlike in other international selections, just a single vehicle will be crowned best of the best. The final selection for this year contains some wild cards indeed, all of which vary from the current reigning 2017 champion, the Skoda Kodiaq. BMW’s X3 is the priciest offering in the range and brings the ethos of Germany’s ‘ultimate driving machine’ to an evolved and stylish four-wheel drive platform. Subaru’s Forester approaches the same ground from a very different direction, as a ‘grown-up’ and more advanced iteration of the still popular go-anywhere wagon of yesteryear. Meanwhile, Skoda’s Karoq is looking to repeat the stellar performance of the Kodiaq, with a different spin on the same alchemy which made its stablemate number one. Toyota’s Camry is a far cry from the original of the same name, adding a little of the excitement and stylistic edginess of its big brothers in the Lexus range while retaining Toyota’s dependable reputation. Holden brings a bit of the best of the old and the

new with a Commodore wagon that’s a long way from the one your dad used to drive — but with the same space and practicality welded to greater efficiency and fuel economy. Hyundai’s affordable Kona crossover proves that good things come in small packages and with smaller price tags, while Kia’s surprising, potent Stinger packs a turbocharged punch and proves that the Korean marque can mix it up with the big boys in terms of performance.

Mercedes bring the sophistication and pedigree of their larger models to the hatchback market in the form of the A-Class, and two Volvos — the XC40 and XC60 show that the Scandinavian badge is not just about safety — it stands for style, individuality and nimble handling as well. All said a tough group from which to pick a winner. On December 12 that’s just what the judges will do, crowning one of these machines NZ Car of the Year.

Designing with Cemya

Michael Edwards at Cemya Design is your local licensed design building practitioner specialising in the production of unique, quality residential homes and additions. With 20 years experience in the architectural field, he is able to offer a creative flair and fresh ideas to help you make the most of your dreams. Michael has a hands-on approach to every design from start to finish and provides that extra personal touch that can make all the difference when taking a concept and turning it into a classic building, making its own mark on the landscape. “We have the ability to view threedimensional pictures, walkthroughs and even virtual reality and this helps bring each project to life for our client,” says Michael. “It is all about that personal understanding of people’s individual needs that develops a building into a home. Whether it is a townhouse, barn, beach house or stately home, each project will have a huge impact on the way the client or family will live their life, so it is important to get it right for them. “No matter how small or large or where the location is, Morrinsville, Matamata, Auckland or the Coromandel, every project is special to us. An individual design may revolve around an idea, view or location, but at all times I listen to the client’s needs and help to ensure their dreams become their reality.” Cemya have been involved in projects that have won Gold and Silver awards in the Master Builders Association

competitions and are proud to have been a part of every design. “I have completed work on everything from redesigning cowsheds through to houses and barns. If you have grandma’s old homestead and it needs remodelling I am more than capable of helping you come up with designs and ideas. Sometimes people have something in mind and need help to bring their ideas through to reality. We start from scratch and work right through to completion. I can help add ensuites into master bedrooms, adding independent dwelling areas for guests or extended family and breath new life

into older buildings.“It’s a pleasure working on both old and new projects, and I enjoy helping people show their individual personality in the space they live or work in every day.”
