SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. There has been changes to the location of the food court and food hall. Rather than having the hall near central headquarters and the self contained vendor outlets dotted around the entire site the food hall will be down by the sheep dog trails and beside the market and lifestyle pavilions while the various mobile vendors will be centralised together as a food court beside the rural pavilions. The pavilions will be located on the eastern and western side of the grounds, which will not only better pedestrian flow, but also offer patrons more food choices from the one location. Police and Fire are becoming more involved this year with the fire service doing live fire fighting demonstrations and the police dog handlers also offering a show. A police officer on a motorcycle will help with traffic control.

The more than 500 exhibitors sites at the upcoming Northland Field Days are almost all booked out says sales and marketing coordinator Gwenda Reid. “There are a few vacant sites still available, but they are going,” says Mrs Reid. While many of the sites have been booked by returning exhibitors, Mrs Reid said there has also been a lot of new exhibitor interest in the March 1-3 event. “There has also been a number of exhibitors who have in the past shared a site who this year have taken their own full site. We believe this shows a number of exhibitors are experiencing growth — which is very good news,” she said. “I am feeling very optimistic about the 2012 event. “I am sure it is going to be a successful and fun event,” she said. “Exhibitors tell us we are the friendly field days and they really enjoy coming, many saying they look forward to the annual event.” A ‘meet and greet' is held following the closing of the first day (Thursday) where exhibitors and committee members, many of whom have been working tirelessly behind the scenes catch up with each other. “Its very popular and highlight the camaraderie felt between everybody.” This year the committee has decided to do away with having annual themes saying they believe exhibitors can now use their

Back country stories raises thousands for charity By Annette Lambly-Robinson

A Cambridge author has already raised $25,000 for charities from the sale of one of a series of three books on classic New Zealand ‘back country’ stories.

atherine Tozer has spent three years compiling the series of books Tales from the Back Country, the first of which was completed in 2010, has already helped charities such as Hospice Waikato, the SPCA and the Canterbury Earthquake appeal. With the second and third books now completed and printed last month Dr Tozer is looking to partner with additional charities that need an ‘innovative’ fundraising tool. Dr Tozer, a Waikato scientist makes no money out of the sale of the books other than a reimbursement on the printing costs with all of the profits — $15 from each $25 book sold — donated to the elected charities. The author is passionate about the wide open spaces and mountain ranges of New Zealand. She and her doctor husband Peter spend much of their spare time exploring and photographing the nation’s varied and beautiful back country.

Inoculate or not — cost benefits? This article focuses on the cost benefits of minimising losses in the amount and nutritional value of silages during the ensiling process. Previously it has been indicated pasture could cost about 20-30 c/kg DM to grow, and the cost of harvesting, rolling, covering, sealing and weighting the covers could add about another 5 c/ kg DM. Loss of grass during transport and silage making should not significantly add to this cost, if done carefully. A good inoculant plus enzyme product may cost about 0.3 c/kg fresh weight, which equates to about 1 c/kg DM for a crop ensiled at 30% DM. DM losses during ensiling can typically be around 10-15%, as the sugars in the grass are used as a food source by the bacteria to produce the acids which pickle the crop to produce stable silage. Therefore, 200 tonnes of grass put into a pit may only end up as 170-180 tonnes of silage. These losses equate to $5,000$7,500 if silage costs 25 c/kg DM to make. If an inoculant reduces losses by five percentage units, then this saves $2,500 for an outlay of only $2,000. Actual savings could be considerably higher, depending on ensiling conditions. A good inoculant reduces DM losses by speeding up the fermentation process, so fewer nutrients are used to keep the

bacteria alive which produce the acids necessary to pickle the grass. The better the inoculant product the faster the fermentation processes, and the less silage lost. The best inoculants contain a number of bacterial strains, each of which work best at different pH's, thus speeding up ensiling. It is rather like a 4 x 100 metre swimming team, where each member of the team swims their part of the race using their preferred stroke, being freestyle, butterfly, back or breast stroke. The bacterial strains on pasture are hetero-fermentative, which means they produce a range of acids such as acetic (vinegar), butyric (smells like vomit) and lactic. Lactic is the strongest of these acids and produces the most palatable silage to livestock. A good inoculant contains homo-fermentative bacteria that only produce lactic acid, which enables the crop to be ensiled more efficiently and rapidly. Plant sugars provide the energy for lactic acid producing bacteria, so any shortage of sugars will slow down the rate of fermentation. Therefore, good inoculant products also contain a number of enzymes that are largely focussed on breaking down indigestible fibre to produce sugars for the lactic acid producing bacteria. This helps speed up fermentation, particularly with challenging ensiling conditions.

A Pataruru dairy farmer who helped turn the internet into a means of communication between New Zealand dairying woman has stepped down from her role with the group her vision helped build Christina Baldwin, founding member of the Dairy Women’s Network board retired late last month after almost 14 years helping to set up the rapidly growing network. The DWN was established in 1998 following the 2nd International Conference for Women in Agriculture held in Washington, DC in the United States. Its purpose is to develop and educate women, and to add value to the business of dairying through improved knowledge. The group has recently been involved in improving the safer use of quads. By up-skilling themselves, the women can pass on the message to other family members and employees. The network increasingly has become an influential industry participant and attracts significant support from sponsors and dairying organisations for activities such as Dairy Days, conferences and daily E-digests. Christina says like many good rural ideas, the idea came from discussions around the kitchen table. After returning from the Washington

conference she was convinced there was an opportunity to achieve more for dairying women. Others such as Hillary Webber, Robyn Clements and Willy Geck agreed, and the network idea was born. A self confessed computer nut she realised the value the internet could play in connecting rural women scattered throughout the country.

A very efficient method to dispose of the smelly stuff is by using the humble composting worm, which is how the idea of a short drop toilet evolved. The grand daddy of the wool producers He’s inquisitive, enjoys a bit of a yarn, calls a spade a spade and thoroughly enjoys his vocation. Bruce Worsnop has spent decades combining his skill and knowledge with science to select sheep with worm tolerance so that ‘dagginess’ is fast becoming history. Bruce, along with son Patrick and partner Wendy, operate a ram stud and commercial flock of 2,000 pure bred Lincoln ewes and also breed Belgian Blue cattle. Their Makaroro Road property in the lee of the Ruahine Ranges covers some 1,900 acres of rolling and flat pasture. “We’ve been selecting our Lincoln Ram stud sires and the females we put into the stud flock for their tolerance to worms for the last 33 years and have found this to be a very heritable trait,” said Bruce. Bruce’s primary focus is wool production and, as a breeder, the last three decades have been successful because of the demand for lustrous

wool, mohair blends and the hand knotted rug market. Lincoln sheep, the heaviest woolproducing breed, were the first English long wool breed to become established in New Zealand but more recently they have been used as a first crossing sire to lift wool production in a flock. One example is the Lincoln Perendale cross, which produces 23 percent more wool than a pure Perendale. With his finger on the pulse when it comes to the wool industry, Bruce is hopeful the Campaign for Wool, launched by Prince Charles earlier this year, will promote the benefits of wool and see an increase in demand. The campaign, which Bruce describes as ‘a breath of fresh air’ is a great opportunity for wool growers to consolidate, unite and support the project. As for the future Bruce is still experimenting but is rather tight lipped about his work.

Opening up a nation’s farms by Paul Campbell

Pioneering farmer, Harold Marsh, used his camera and diaries to capture the essence of pioneer life as our forebears broke in the New Zealand bush to productive farmland

In a lifetime, Marsh was to take more than 7000 images, mainly on glass plates through an unweildy early camera, recording hugely valuable rural information for posterity. A selection of those photographs, many never be seen outside the Marsh family before, have now been published in Images from Albertland, a stunning book which marks the

150th anniversary next Easter of the Albertlanders’ settlement of 70,000 acres of the coastal Kaipara. The area was opened up from the mid-1860s, and the settlers experiences were mirrored in the Waikato and indeed, across the country. In the diary excerpts below, we learn at first hand of just how it was for those men of the land who made the first impressions on country that today is rich and verdant, and the backbone of the national economy. Back then — it was simply hard yakka. March 1: ‘Got up at sunrise. Commenced work, chopped about 20 chains on one side

March 6: ‘Lay in in the morning. Caught another rat in the trap. Had breakfast at 11 am and dinner at 3.30 pm. Occupied our time lounging about the balcony enjoying the scenery and sunshine, reading, attempting to sketch etc’. These entries are a far cry indeed from farm life today — with farm bikes, chainsaws, post hole diggers and innumerable other devices, not to mention time for a beer at the local pub after work and sky TV in the evening. As the work progressed though, and farms were broken in, there began to be light at the end of the tunnel for those on the land. Images from Albertland also relates the story of another pioneering farmer, Walter Stables, whose family took over a partly established property. His story continues: ‘Walter had a look around the farm and studied the house. He reckoned it needed a good coat of paint and some alterations. He was pleased to find several patches of grass amongst the bush and some suitable cropping areas. There were several apple trees with one carrying a good crop and nearly ripe. ‘A considerable quantity of further stores such as flour and sugar, rolled oats and potatoes had been ordered from the co-op store and were to be sent by boat. ‘Walter remarked to (his wife) Lillian that as they didn’t have any money, self-sufficiency with a good garden would

Dairy pioneers — the birth of an industry

have to be a first consideration. A plot down near the boundary was picked out as being most suitable and within a week, two acres of potatoes, cabbages, swedes, beans, wheat and corn had been planted. Half the area was in wheat as a trial to provide feed for the fowls. If it did well he planned to have a larger area the following year, grinding some for flour and porridge. ‘But the immediate task for the whole family was house cleaning, inside and out. There were cobwebs, signs of rats and dust and dirt upstairs and downstairs. They also went for a look around the whole farm and found cleared patches, mostly by burning, but now overgrown with ferns and tough native grasses. They thought the cattle could chew this off. ‘Most of the land that had been cropped and not re-grassed was now a mass of penny-royal which attracted the bees. Two neglected hives were found under a Totara and after being cleared they hoped to have honey, if someone could be found to collect it. Walter was not keen on the prospect himself. ‘Three months after their arrival the garden was doing well, there were two horses using a borrowed plough, three cows, two in milk and plenty of butter, cheese and milk. Four acres had been worked over and sown in rye and cocksfoot. ‘Walter presented his five year plan for discussion. Apart from erecting

buildings, he wanted to have 75 ewes, 20 head of cattle, several house cows and a few pigs and poultry. Growing his own poultry feed, he considered there was good money selling eggs as there was a good demand in Port Albert and Auckland. Butter could be sent by boat to Onehunga. Several boats were now trading between Port Albert, Helensville, Dargaville and Pahi. He hoped to be in operation in 12 months. The story is typical of those hardy settlers who opened up farming in New Zealand and it is hugely fortunate that Harold Marsh turned to photography, to capture scenes that would otherwise be lost forever.

Survival relies on simple safety checks

The safe rescue last month of an inexperienced hunter in a remote area of the Kaimanawa Ranges is a reminder to plan and prepare well before venturing into remote country. Mountain Safety Council Hunter training programme manager, Mike Spray, said the outcome could have been quite different if the weather had not been so favourable.

He said the incident highlights the importance of thorough planning and preparation and having a back-up plan for when things go wrong. “Regardless of the time of year, before going into New Zealand’s mountain areas, hunters (or trampers) need to have the skills and experience to deal with unexpected situations.” “Taking appropriate clothing and

A country girl at heart Like many lifestyle ventures Sandy Mahon’s ‘Poultry Valley’ started out as a hobby and grew fast — “in fact very fast,” she laughs.

ituated in the Manawhara Valley, near Morrinsville the 26 hectare farm is home to numerous breeds of poultry, including four varieties of ducks. Originally from Hastings Sandy moved to the Waikato in the mid-to late 1990s as a 50/50 sharemilker. After four years — and the 24/7 work required for successful dairy farming — she decided sharemilking was not for her and began considering what she might like to do. A country girl and an animal lover she wanted something that would allow her to continue to work on the land and with animals — calf rearing seemed a viable option. In 2000, Sandy and partner Shane, who worked as a panel beater, purchased their own little piece of paradise in Hoe ‘O’ Tainui — which means “ The Paddle of the Tainui ” — it was a dream come true.

They moved a house onto the property in 2001 and Sandy set about rearing up to 300 dairy and beef calves each season. With Shane working off site, it was left to Sandy to fit purchasing and picking up calves in between the twice daily feeding.

“I’d pick up calves from all over the Waikato — from sale yards and farms — it was busy and really too much hard work for one person alone,” she said. As fate would have it and unknown to Sandy at the time an alternative venture was already in the offering. It was just a few poultry in the beginning — an interest and hobby for just a few eggs. Sandy loved having the various fowls because she could not decide which breeds she liked the best. “It just grew and grew into the business it is now,” she says. This meant the calf rearing has been greatly scaled back, particularly over the last five or six years, only a few calves for the weaner calf market (or finishing) along with a few Dorper sheep are raised. Even the emphasis on the poultry has changed — interest and sales for fertile hatching eggs far outweighed eggs for eating, as did the demand for live poultry. Since 2005, the poultry has been the main source of income for the farm, and in 2009 they changed the farm name to Poultry Valley and Lifestyle, and established a website. Nowadays there are numerous breeds of fowl — Wyandottes, Orpingtons, Sussex, Barnevelders Rhode Island Red, Andulasian, Australorp, Dorking, Faverolle, Araucana, Langshan, Leghorn, Barred Plymouth Rock, Hamburg and Pekin bantams — and if that doesn’t sound enough in many cases there are various types within the same species that are

Then there’s the ducks which include Muscovy, Swedish Blue, Magpie and Buff Orpingtons and more recently China geese. Sandy says while some people want a specific breed many people buy a mixture of poultry because they like the variation in all the different shapes and colours. Apart from fertile hatching eggs and live poultry, the couple also offer feed and accessories and more recently various sizes of poultry houses. It’s a busy lifestyle. Most days Sandy is up at 7am feeding all the chicks in the brooders out in the barn, then on to all the poultry outside. Other jobs include collecting, marking — sorting and packing eggs for the courier post for buyers wanting to hatch their own chicks. After all the daily poultry keeping, cleaning pens sorting and leg banding birds, Sandy is up late at nights on the computer answering all the e-mail orders and enquiries and advice seeking. Shane is up at 5.30am feeding and moving calves, feeding pigs and emus as well as moving livestock, then onto building chickens coops, or his ‘day job’ of restoring cars for clients. “Most days we love it, but with almost no time off on occasion we do wonder why we do as much as we do,” she laughs. “Dealing with the public has it rewards, but also quite a
