2012 has been a year of challenges and turning points for the rural sector, from the Fonterra share float to stricter controls around environmental management, along with a super-buoyant NZ dollar and ongoing economic fluctuations on the global market. It’s also been a year during which the benefits of farming in New Zealand have been richly appreciated, and vital subsectors of the primary economy (such as aquaculture) have received a great prognosis for further growth. For the team here at Waikato Farming Lifestyles it’s been a landmark year as well. We’ve brought you twelve months of rural news, opinion, new scientific developments, and stories about real Kiwi people working the land, and we hope you’ve enjoyed reading our publication just as much as we’ve enjoyed producing it. We’ve met some real characters in 2012, and though our stories and pictures we’ve introduced you to their unique lifestyles. Some have adopted new livestock, new practices or new technology to expand what we think of as ‘New Zealand Farming’. Others have been preserving our heritage, reviving traditional crafts, or finding interesting new ways to farm smarter. Some you might even know as neighbours and friends! As we come into the ‘holiday’ season
Puma S ®
we know that many of you will be working harder than ever, making hay while the sun shines. We’d like to offer warm Christmas greetings to all of our readers, customers, and their families. Have a happy and safe Christmas and we will see you all in the new year, with twelve more months of the issues, triumphs, personalities and people of rural New Zealand to share with you. Travel Safely From the team at the Waikato Farming Lifestyles.

Up to 1,500 sheep will hit the streets of Te Kuiti in April as part of the Great New Zealand Muster. Held on the final day of the New Zealand Shearing Championships, the Great New Zealand Muster is a traditional kiwi country fair with a unique difference — a sheep race. As a major highlight of the festival’s fun-filled day of activities, the New Zealand Shears Running of the Sheep has become recognised both nationwide and internationally. Based on Spain’s running of the bulls in Pamplona, the race is considered to be the largest of its kind in the world, attracting up to 10,000 spectators. The actual number of sheep in the race is kept as a highly guarded secret, known only to the local farmer who supplies them. The public have an opportunity to be in to win prizes by guessing the number of sheep making the one kilometre-long dash to the finish line. The event will also see one lucky school take out a top prize if their allocated number corresponds with the first numbered sheep over the finish line. This year’s prize is $1,000 worth

John and Jeanne van Kuyk from Aroha Organic Goat Cheese say they don’t just make cheese — ‘each cheese is a little journey’, say the artisan cheesemakers, beginning with organic soils and pastures, from healthy girls to happy milking with a delicious organic cheese at the end. O
ur goats are the most important thing to us,” say John and Jeanne. The van Kuyk’s farm is a 50-acre Bio Gro certified organic block in Waihou, at the foot of Mount Te Aroha. Their goats lead a charmed life by all accounts, grazing on the best organic pastures, with lots of tender loving care. In return, they produce the best organic milk for Jeanne to make award-winning organic cheeses, scooping seven golds, one silver and three bronze at the 2012 NZ Cheese Awards. Jeanne and John moved to New Zealand 32 years ago with a determination to live their dream. They had grown up on farms and were set on a rural lifestyle but buying a farm in Holland at that time was expensive. After watching a TV programme about a Dutchman sharemilking in New Zealand they looked at each other and said, ‘that’s us’. “We didn’t know anyone in NZ but our neighbour had a cousin there who placed an ad in the local dairy company store — we had a job within a fortnight!” They arrived in Northland with their three young children in 1981 to take up contract milking in the small community of Ararua. “It felt like home from the first day, we loved the people and all the space and freedom.”
We have customers with “allergies to cow’s milk so it’s great that they can eat cheese again

After working themselves up the share milking ladder, in 1990 they bought a small dairy farm in Waihou where they milked cows at first and also had a few mohair goats as a hobby. When the farm became certified organic in 2000 they decided to invest in two Saanen dairy goats so they could utilise the milk for organic goat cheese. Today, the van Kuyks farm between 30 and 40 Saanen and Anglo-Nubian goats. Since then they have sold the cows and provide organic dairy heifer grazing, which they say makes for a good combination with the goats. Jeanne and John believe the milk tastes better when goats are free to graze as nature intended. “We try to provide them with a happy lifestyle as close as possible to their natural habitat. They graze a large area of herbal leys and shrubs as well as a variety of grasses and we don’t feed grain, aside from a small treat of organic barley to the girls on the milking stand. “They all have names and we handle them a lot — we’d know if one of our girls had a headache,” laughs Jeanne.

affectionate personalities but have very different looks. “The Saanen girls from Switzerland are laid back and the Nubians of the Middle East and North Africa are more social. Saanens have a double coat for the colder months whereas the Nubians love the heat.”

The farm has been Bio Gro certified organic for 12 years and conforms to MPI as well as NZ Specialist Cheesemakers Association regulations.
Our Clients get their set of Financial Accounts taking the deferred pay out into account so they can.
They began making organic and GE free cheeses for the market in 2004 and with no knowledge of cheesemaking, Jeanne enlisted the help of friend and artisan cheesemaker in Holland. “There were no courses in those days so we did it all by email. Nowadays there are lots of ways you can learn.” Milking is twice a day and the milk from both breeds is mixed together to bring substance to the cheese. The Saanen produce a high quantity of milk but with low milk solids (protein and fat), whereas the Nubians have high solids but lower milk production. “Our cheese making is a total ‘handson’ approach — the cheese is made as naturally as it can be, with vegetable rennet and edible rinds. There are no electrical processes used in the actual cheese making process, apart from pasteurisation which is still legally required.” Goat’s milk is full of healthy enzymes, vitamins and Omegas 3 and 6, is more easily digested than cows’ milk and found to be beneficial to children with bronchial, allergic or colic conditions.
Make an appointment with us NOW to find out more!
“Because we farm in accordance to nature we don`t produce any cheeses during June and July when our girls are on maternity leave.” In a project close to their hearts, Jeanne and John look set to become the first in NZ to be awarded raw milk cheese certification, a project they have been working on with MPI for over two years. Following a cheesemaking process traditional in their homeland, they hope to produce unpasteurised raw milk cheeses, as well as pasteurised. As per MPI regulations, they are currently allowed to sell raw milk at the gate, five litres per household at a time.
There is a waiting list for the artisan cheeses which take four weeks to make and are sold all over the country.
“Although it has been a frustrating journey at times, it has been educational too. We strongly believe that when animal health and farming practices are optimal and hygiene and f’s made from raw milk.” Jeanne and John say they are living their dream, doing what they love is their biggest reward. “We’re not materialistic and if we break even we are happy because of our lifestyle.” “This is what brought us to NZ in the first place.”

From small beginnings by Kim Munro
Franklin Vets Te Kauwhata began life in a 3 x 5 metre portacom and a shipping container at the back of a truck yard with just one vet and a single commercial farm.
S
ix years on, the practice now provides veterinary initiatives to around 50 dairy clients, a similar number of dry stock farms and has a large base of lifestyle and companion animal clients. Visitors were always welcome at the small clinic, however only two at a time
could fit in around the store contents and seating consisted of a folded camp chair and a drench drum. “My lasting memory of the Portacom will be the temperature — it was always incredibly cold or incredibly hot with little in-between,” says founding veterinarian and managing director, Mark Hosking.
Cellmate Batteries
Repackers of Ni-Cd and Ni-Mh cordless power tool batteries etc. DID YOU KNOW That your cordless power tool batteries etc can be re-packed (re-built) right here in Hamilton? In most cases the cost is about 50% of the RRP of new and as we use high quality replacement cells, the batteries are normally of greater capacity than the originals. If you are unable to procure a particular type of battery then the chances are we can make it for you. So don’t throw your old batteries away, let Cellmate bring them back to life by having them re-packed.

“Thankfully, we quickly grew out of our portacom and moved into our current premises in Waerenga Road in 2007 and at the same time launched a partner clinic in Taupiri,” adds Mark. The Te Kauwhata clinic continues to progress with a team of three dedicated large animal vets, an equine vet, a vet technician and two administration staff. With a special interest in large animals, vet Greg Lindsay has been with the practice since graduating from Massey University in 2008 and says even though he grew up in the city, he just couldn’t imagine working cooped up in an office. “There aren’t many large animal vets from Auckland so I’m a bit of a rarity,” says Greg.
“It’s a great team, we have lots of fun but work pretty hard at the same time. Our policy is for vets to be superior at servicing one class of animal, rather than being a ‘jack of all trades’ — it just makes sense to hone your skills.” The practice has seen growth in recent years, employing the use of modern technology to assist farmers and has got on board offering additional animal health and performance services to farmers. “Farmers are great to deal with, they’re hardworking and it’s true what they say — they really are the backbone of the country. Helping them improve their business along with seeing animals’ lives improve is highly rewarding.” The practice also offers farmers a

udder as well as healthy hoof schemes.” As part of the initiative, the practice has invested in the software package, Infovet, which stores information from dairy farm clients enabling vets to monitor and investigate animal health issues. “Fonterra inputs daily milk count data so, for example, if one farm has a higher than normal cell-count in their milk, an indicator of mastitis, we are able to monitor the situation and provide vet care if needed — it’s all about proactive rather than reactionary practice.”

‘grazing service’ where, in partnership with a large farm, they monitor health and growth rates providing treatment where needed. “The growth of young dairy animals over their first two years of life is often sub-standard with animals below weight so we offer a complete package for the farmer — they pay for the grazing and stock monitoring and health in one.” They have also aligned themselves to work closely with Dairy NZ. The organisation, funded by dairy farmers, places vets on training programmes with the intention of progressing animal health schemes. “The idea is that instead of being the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff we can focus on problem prevention. Dairy NZ have put a lot of time into the creation of animal health initiatives — in-calf programmes and healthy
While the Te Kauwhata clinic retains a focus on dairying, a small animal consultation service is provided by the fulltime companion animal vets from the Pukekohe clinic who visit three times per week. Any cases requiring surgery are transported free of charge from Te Kauwhata to the hospital at Pukekohe. Another new initiative is the provision of equine services including dentistry, medical workups, broodmare wellness checks, embryo transfer, pre-purchase examination, colic and lameness workshops and geriatric care. Along with an increase in small holdings in the region, there has been an increase in demand for tailored veterinary care for lifestyle farmers.

“They have their own particular requirements and we aim to tailor our care to suit their needs, including ways to pass on knowledge about small block farming.” The clinic is in the process of applying for New Zealand Vet Association ‘Best Practice’ accreditation and expects to become accredited next year — another step forward for the practice that began in a portacom.

They look like little sea monsters, grow up to an astonishing 68cm in length, and taste like nothing else on earth. They’re known by scientists as Macrobrachium Rosenbergii, but to the gourmands and chefs of New Zealand as ‘simply delicious’ — giant fresh water prawns which the public can’t get enough of! Normally these tropical invertebrates would be unable to thrive in the relatively chilly climate of the central North Island, but clever engineering, and a smart way of transferring the waste heat

from geothermal energy into warm, prawn-friendly water has seen the nippy little crustaceans find a home just outside of Taupo at the Huka Prawn Park. The park is unable to use geothermal water direct from the source as it contains high volumes of silica, so heat exchangers gently warm water from the Waikato River to 28 degrees Celsius — the perfect environment for prawns. What began as a bold experiment in aquaculture has become an unparalleled success, and now successive generations of prawns are spawned, raised and harvested in captivity. With 19 large ponds, the prawn park (New Zealand’s one and only such venture) is able to pump out 10 tonnes of prawns a year to a hungry public. This is helped along by the fact that a female freshwater prawn can spawn up to 30,000 eggs five times a year! But the real story here is not just the phenomenal success of this novel method of farming, which has seen Huka Prawn Park grow from initial earthworks in 1987 to a booming seafood hub today. The amazing fact is that this isn’t just an intensive and innovative farming enterprise; at the same time it is also a top tourist destination! Bright orange mascot ‘Shawn the Prawn’ welcomes

In a New Zealand first, the Huka Prawn Park opened its doors to visitors in 2006, allowing them to fish for literally all the prawns they could eat right by the side of the production pools. A golf ‘hole in one’ challenge was added, along with an interactive walk through the park, facilities for kids, a riverside nature path and, of course, a gourmet restaurant. Educational facilities teach schoolchildren about the life cycle of the prawn, as well as how science and technology combined to make the prawn park possible. In the future, aquaculture operations such as this one will be increasingly important to feed the world’s growing population, and the lessons learned by the developers of Huka Prawn Park may prove invaluable. Today this working prawn farm is one of the top rated attractions in the Taupo area, with tour groups, schools and families coming to enjoy the challenge of catching their own prawns, or just getting up close and personal with the tasty critters as they learn about their biology and how they are cultivated. It’s another link in a chain of great, innovative ideas which began with the inspiration of harnessing the waste heat of Contact Energy’s nearby geothermal power station, and which proves that farming — in all its forms — doesn’t have to think inside the box. Huka Prawn Park combines the serious business of producing tons of

Do you want a career...
I recall one particular client who appeared to have a problem with every body system. I assessed her as early 60’s and was surprised she was early 50’s. Our initial client consultation included a 1 hour assessment of all body systems and it seemed there was a tick and comment beside every conceivable problem. During discussion of these complex cases the first question was to identify a starting point. In most cases treatment was a little like a long set of stairs. The only way to get to the top is one step at a time. We identified the first step and included some measures to improve just a few problems. When facing multiple health challenges it is important for people to experience progress to give them hope that further improvement is possible. In her case our initial plan was to make some adjustments to her diet and some supplements to improve her digestive system and energy. In particular we wanted to include protein with every meal to help regulate her blood glucose and to remove the highly inflammatory fats in her diet. This completely contrasted with another case where the person looked like she was early 40’s to find she was early 50’s. She had paid great attention to her diet, exercise and other positive lifestyle factors and was in amazing health. Her only complaints were a minor digestive problem and slightly lowered bone density. For her, all we needed was a slight dietary adjustment and supplements to optimise bone density. You may be incredibly healthy and all you need is to ensure your diet and nutrient intake is able to retain your health as you enter the next phase of your life. You may have multiple health challenges and need a detailed plan to start to deal with the underlying causes of the problems. Addressing these over time will usually mean real improvements but you need to identify the first step. Give me a call if you need help. John Arts is the founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Farmers advocacy groups have been loud and clear in their concerns on how the Act will affect them. An example is quoted by Farmers of New Zealand operations director, Bill Guest, who notes that the “legislation’s interpretation pitfalls give rise to unrealistic policies” by councils “ that require that building consents should comply with NZ Fire Service Fire Fighting Water Supplies Code of Practice, requiring a dedicated minimum water supply of 45,000 litres for single family dwellings in non-reticulated areas and 180,000 litres for working/business premises.” This, he says, could cause insurance companies to reject insurance cover because of non-compliance “Many council district plans define buildings as a temporary or permanent movable or immovable structure

(including a structure intended for occupation by people, animals, machinery or chattels)
because the RMA planning documents have historically NOT delivered the main purpose of the Act.
“It is time that we all wake up and take an interest in what our district and regional councils are foisting on property owners and how they are threatening our property rights,” he says.
“Change is needed and this being a document that all other plans must adhere to, is where to start.
“Farmers of New Zealand have always been staunch defenders of private property rights and to make greater progress we need parliament to respect property rights. But, simply, they do not, and have not for some time. RMA costs and red tape are a serious concern. Unfortunately, so far all we have seen from this National-led government is a number of RMA National Policy Statements that actually make matters worse.” Mr Guest added that the RMA was never about environmental protection and said its functions included ‘managing the use, development, and protection of natural and physical resources in a way, or at a rate, which enables people and communities to provide for their social, economic, and cultural wellbeing, and for their health and safety’. “We believe that the state of New Zealand’s rural regions’ social, economic, health and safety is so poor, simply
“Regarding regional mapping, we believe that local communities — and not paid consultants or the courts — should have more influence in the process. At the moment case law is more a determinant of outstanding landscape maps than any other factor. We have had legal advice that it would be appropriate and not unlawful for economic values to be entered or mentioned throughout the maps where it has or can be identified. This will add both balance and weight to the fact that despite being identified as an ‘outstanding landscape’ does not mean it cannot be mined or developed in some way. “Farmers of New Zealand has submitted the appropriate submissions and as always we will continue to vigorously defend the rights of landowners and the well-being of our rural community against those that undermine personal freedoms and our democratic rights that go back to the time of the Magna Carta,” Mr Guest concluded.

Improving trace element efficiency
Dr Bert Quin, fertiliser and soil fertility consultant
Applying trace elements directly to land to overcome deficiencies has been practised in New Zealand since the 1930s. Early examples include cobalt (Co) to cure ‘bush sickness’ in sheep, selenium (Se) to improve animal fertility, and molybdenum (Mo) to improve fixation of atmospheric nitrogen (N) by clover. These and other trace elements are commonly incorporated into fertiliser or lime applications to avoid an additional application cost. Direct treatment of the animal is far more efficient per unit trace element, and ensures the correct dosage is given to every animal, but at considerable cost. Salt licks and addition to drinking water are considerably cheaper but do not ensure adequate ingestion by

individual animals — some consume too much, others not enough. Direct application to the land with fertiliser or lime ensures that all pasture is treated, provided the spreading is even. The issue then is to ensure that the trace element is applied in a manner and form that will ensure that adequate amounts are taken up by the plant, whether it be required for plant growth, animal health, or both. Ensuring that as little as 150 grams (eg Mo) to a few kg (copper) in solid form is very evenly mixed through every 200500 kg of solid fertiliser being applied per hectare can be done, but it requires good equipment and real diligence on the part of fertiliser store staff. Most trace elements applied in solid form are used as the sulphate or carbonate form (‘chemical’ form), for cost and ease of handling. Only a few percent of a trace element applied in this way gets taken up by the plant and ingested by the animal, and this fact is allowed for in

The easiest ways to improve the utilisation of trace elements, without higher product costs immediately destroying any advantage, are (a) foliar application in liquid form, and (b) use of chelated or polymer-bonded forms of trace elements, particularly if these two practises are used together. Chelated trace elements are typically twice as expensive, but can be up to ten times as efficient, especially if maximum opportunity is given for foliar uptake. Of the major nutrients, only nitrogen

(N) can be taken up directly through the leaves of pasture in sufficient quantity to meet 30% or more of total requirements, or provide a real boost to production — and then only if the N is applied as urea, in fluid or solution form, and if a urease inhibitor of some sort is incorporated. However, pasture can take up sufficient quantities of most trace elements to easily control any plant or animal deficiencies, provided it is applied as a chelated or polymer-bonded form, in water. The necessity for the product to be sprayed on — therefore requiring an expensive separate application to the solid fertiliser or lime — has greatly limited the use of foliar application of trace elements on pasture. However, new aerial and ground-spreading technology has significantly reduced the cost premium of applying maintenance fertiliser, N and lime in high-solids fluid form. One of the many advantages of this new technology is that trace elements and additives such as gibberellic acid and weedicide can easily be incorporated into the fluid. This ensures extremely even application, and means that nutrients that can most efficiently enter the plant through the leaves will do so. The rest fall through the leaves to the soil as they dry out, also minimising dust and risk of run-off. Note that it is simply not necessary to have all the product in very fine form. For most ingredients, excepting the trace elements, a size range of 20250 microns is ideal. This applies to lime also.
How can I save money on fertiliser and still grow more grass? fertilisers for the future

Sensational seven-seater points the way forward by Our Motoring Correspondent
things, this should make you think again. And if you think that nothing this good can ever be within your financial grasp, the very reasonable price will make you think very hard indeed about driving home in one!
The SUV market has come a long way since the days when these vehicles were seen by many as diesel-drinking behemoths of the highways, irresponsibly large and unsuited for the more refined tasks of the school run and the weekly shop. But times have changed — or rather public perceptions have been changed by the hard work of automotive designers and engineers, who have turned the SUV from a ‘civilianised’ slab of army hardware into a sleek and practical urban ‘swiss army knife’ — the vehicle for all seasons, all families, and all situations. Case in point — luxury marque Porsche already enjoy success with their Cayenne, and it’s been strongly rumoured that both Bentley and Maserati are considering concept four wheel drive machines. That’s why it was a quiet revelation to find myself behind the wheel of the new Kia Sorento R — the eminently euro-styled SUV crafted by Korea’s most go-ahead auto manufacturer and styled by industry legend Peter Schreyer. Since leaving Germany to work with Kia the redoubtable Mr Schreyer has redefined how the world sees the Kia brand, and if this has been his mission then the Sorento R is his tour de force. Much effort has gone into making large sports utilities feel more like the big sedans they have all but replaced in recent years, and with this seven-seat 2.2 litre turbo diesel it all seems to have clicked. This might seem to belittle the years of R and D which have honed and tuned the Sorento into a vehicle
which glides through the corners flat and smooth, handles better than many cars on the road and still has space for seven full-grown adults, but effortlessness is at the core of why the Sorento works. Take the engine, for example. The Sorento does with 2-and-a-bit litres of turbo-assisted power (that’s 145kws and a generous 436 newton-metres of torque, for the mathematicians) what the SUVs of the 1990s required vast sixes and eights to accomplish. Chop down with the neat little tiptronic shifter and you’ll pass most anything on the highway, all with a whisper rather than a Kenworth-like rumble. Then there’s the sheer sense of space inside — not just seven comfortable seats with ample legroom even for this somewhat bulky correspondent, but also clever niches, cubbies, cup holders and a boot which can engulf a whole holiday’s worth of luggage. Far from Spartan practicality, the Sorento achieves a well-constructed sense of real luxury, too — check out the full-length moon roof on the deluxe Premium model, the heated and ventilated seats, and a suite

of electronics including voice activated stereo controls and phone. In a world first, this SUV even parks itself, a feature which should prove much beloved by the urban families who are its target market. The revolution, then, appears to be a fait accompli. Kia have delivered an SUV which is full sized, capable on and off road — and yet still frugal with fuel, quiet, comfortable and even better — it looks amazing, from its eye-catching alloys to the kinetic lines which run front to back. If you’re still of a mind that SUV’s are lumbering, ungraceful

Better manners — but still formidable!
They’re calling it the ‘future of MX’, and with bold words like these you just know that the engineers at Honda were going to deliver a masterpiece with 2013’s all-new CRF450R. The latest generation of what is widely known as one of the world’s best off-road bikes had some big shoes to fill, but a more than positive reception from the motoring press and the riding public has proven once again that evolution, not revolution is the key to honing and sharpening up a bike for serious competition.
Think about it — even the best road car is nowhere near the level of Formula 1. Your yacht won’t be winning the America’s Cup anytime soon. But for a fairly modest price any dirt-riding enthusiast can own a bike which is being heaped with praise by the heavyweights of motocross. The scalpel has come out to cut weight from the CRF450R — and to lower that all important centre of gravity. This fourth generation bike comes with

pneumatic spring forks, compact, lower mufflers and a host of other tweaks which make it handle more like it’s diminutive 250cc brother than the powerful off-roader it is. Honda’s latest looks like being hard to beat in 2013, not only for technical refinement and cost, but on the track as well. Added to the checklist is the fact that it really looks the part, too! A redesign of the planes and angles of the CRF has lent it a lean and predatory aspect, and under all the stylistic cues there has even been space to slightly expand the fuel capacity of its tank, and accommodate those adjustable shocks. After four generations, the CRF450R has been tamed of its sometimes terrifying bite, but it’s still ready to devour miles and miles of dirt!

Or serious fun — because the key to the new CRF450R is ease of access. With greater mass centralisation to add stability, fully adjustable air suspension and a more ‘gentle’ pull out of the corners to make endurance riding more about the mental than the physical, the new Honda does what few top performance motorsport machines can — it puts superhuman performance into the reach of us mere mortals.

Hoof Print With Fred Hoekstra
How many lame cows are acceptable? Every now and again I get this question thrown at me on a hoof trimming course. It is an interesting question which you can answer in different ways. Obviously, the ideal is ZERO. The reality is quite different. When you have livestock you have health issues, and lameness is a part of that. I think it is good to explore this question a little more. The question is: “how many lame cows are acceptable?” The question is not: “how much time is it acceptable for a cow to be lame?” The answer to the second question is irrelevant because we have the responsibility to care for our cows and lame cows should be dealt with as soon as possible. We had a discussion about that within our team, and it made me realise how easy it is to mix up these two questions. I guess a different way of asking the
Another issue is that of course, when you improve one problem it may have an effect on the other problems as well. So, I don’t think there is a clear guideline on how few lame cows you should strive for — you just need to be constantly reviewing and evaluating the various restrictions at any given time and prioritise accordingly.
If It’s concrete? You’ll need to talk to bowers! • ConTinuouS oPen ended feed TRoughS • fRee STAnding ConCReTe wAllS foR PAlm keRnel / feRTiliSeR bunkeRS • duRACReTe ConCReTe wATeR TAnkS

same question is: “At what point is it necessary to put lameness up in the priority list?” I would suggest that the answer to that question is different per farm or per manager. I would even argue that it may be unwise to address lameness for some farmers. Let me explain that — when we run a business we always have issues to deal with. The smartest thing to do is to deal with the issue that puts the biggest restriction on business effectiveness and efficiency. You could compare it with a water pipe that has restrictions in it that slows down the water flow. In the diagram you have a waterpipe with a number of issues or restrictions reducing the smooth flow through the pipe. In this scenario it makes more sense to concentrate on feed quality than on lameness because that is the biggest limiting factor for this farmer. When the feed quality is improved to the point that time is the biggest restriction (not necessarily when the problem has been dealt with completely) that is when the focus should shift to the time
issue and see what can be done about that until milk quality becomes the biggest restriction. After that feed quality may need to be readdressed before the focus goes onto lameness. So the question of how many lame cows is acceptable is different per farm. Naturally we want all those problems to go away and have a farm that runs very smoothly and there are different strategies around to achieve that. One of the main difficulties is to identify the biggest restrictions in our businesses. It needs careful consideration. Some small issues may need to be dealt with earlier because they could turn into big issues if left alone for too long.

With so many products on the market and many treatment procedures in the beauty industry, it can all get a bit confusing. Which product should you use? Which treatment is actually going to deliver results? Even more importantly — who can you go to for advice? She now consults with clients regarding skin and unwanted hair, and she offers her advice on getting the best results. “The most common concern ladies have is fine lines and wrinkles,” says Michaela. “My role is to educate ladies on what exactly is happening with their skin; what is causing the wrinkles and how to help prevent and slow down the process of ageing, rather than just getting a short term fix.”’ With correct advice, treatments and active products you certainly can improve the health of the skin. Results include minimising fine lines and wrinkles; improving imperfections such as red veins, sun damage and acne spots, to give the skin a more radiant appearance. By working within the deeper layers of the skin results are seen on the visible surface layers. One of the most important but simple tricks to skincare is to wear sunscreen. Make sure your sunscreen is able to protect you from not only UVB rays but UVA rays (ageing ray of the sun) and is full of antioxidants. Remember to re-apply throughout the day! Application of the ‘Body of Knowledge’ as Important as new research and development In my monthly column I often remind people about how research and development is the only way to achieve long term, sustainable competitive advantage. What is often not stated, however, is that this is predicated on consistently and correctly applying the current best practice or body of knowledge. If this is not done, optimal outcomes will be compromised (at best), or even destroyed, by poor execution or poor quality.

For an example of this involving pruning, see Wood Matters Issue 8: ‘Stark reality of poor pruning hits home at harvest time’. implementation of what are otherwise world-class forestry management practices. This is a critically important issue for New Zealand in our quest to increase our productivity and raise our standard of living. Hopefully the Sustainable Forestry Fund free forestry database project (see last month’s issue of Wood Matters) will help to some extent. More is needed, however, including a change in attitude from one of ‘she’ll be right’, to one of ‘I will make sure I get it right’.

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.
Ph 0800 355 544
How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes
that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™.
