“I’d like to thank all of our advertisers for their continuing support, and of course our readers, who have offered us so many great ideas in 2019 and who persist in telling us how much they enjoy the publication. We have so much positive feedback from you all, and we love to hear from you! If you know of someone doing amazing things in farming, someone achieving, innovating or preserving our history, please tell us. Chances are our other readers would love to hear about it too.” Meanwhile, lead journalist of the publication and a regular byline on our farming feature stories, Ann van Engelen, reflects on a year of news that has spanned the tumultuous and the quirky. “I grew up in rural New Zealand, with my dad being a share milker and dairy company union delegate. I have been writing for Waikato Farming Lifestyles
for five years now. It has been an absolute pleasure to tell the stories of the different people in our farming and rural communities across the region and beyond. Connecting with clients and producing business profiles and promoting local businesses has also been a pleasure, and I look forward to working with past, present and new clients in the future. I do hope you all have a relaxing festive season.” Teresa and Ann also wish to take this opportunity, on behalf of the entire team behind the Waikato Farming Lifestyles, to wish all our readers, advertisers, supporters and locals a very merry Christmas and a safe, happy holiday season. Your monthly farming publication will return in mid-January with a fresh harvest of news, views, feature stories and valuable information to start the new year right!

Summer water testing
RURAL SECURITY CAMERA INSTALLATIONS
Heading off to the beach for the Christmas break and want to know if the water quality stacks up for swimming and recreation? Waikato Regional Council tests the water quality at seven Coromandel Peninsula and two west coast beaches once a week from November until March, with the latest results available to beach users at waikatoregion.govt.nz/ coastalresults and the Land and Water Aotearoa (LAWA) website. Coastal and marine team leader Michael Townsend says the water quality at Waikato’s beaches is generally quite high. However, the weekly results are important to look at because heavy rainfall events can wash contaminants, such as effluent, from the land into the waterways and out to the coast. “What we tend to find is that the faecal bacterial levels can be quite high after a lot of rain. So while it might be tempting to rush out for a swim the minute the sun is out again, it’s worth knowing that these contaminants may be present in the water for up to two days and we’d recommend caution. “The number of faecal bacteria present in the water indicates the likelihood of getting sick from the many possible pathogens such as bacteria or viruses.” If the results are of concern, the regional council works with district councils and the Waikato District Health Board to undertake more testing and to understand if there could be any public health implications. “So far, each time we have done further testing the bacteria

levels are back to an acceptable range. However, if there was a problem, then the DHB will issue a health warning.” The council uses national guidelines to determine whether the monitoring results show the water is suitable for recreation. The Coromandel beaches monitored are Whitianga, Hot Water Beach, Tairua, Pauanui, Whangamata, Onemana and Whiritoa, and Sunset Beach — Port Waikato, and Ngarunui on the west coast. Weekly monitoring gives an understanding of the typical water
quality at each location over time. An overall grade is updated for each location at the end of the sampling season. It is the fourth consecutive year that the regional council has done coastal water quality monitoring, and it recruits students to help with sample collections. “It is important to understand the quality of the water so we can make good decisions on managing our coastal and marine area,” says Dr Townsend.

A GENETICS AND RUGBY PASSION by Ann van Engelen Gordon Fullerton grew up on his parent’s dairy farm, is a dairy genetics expert, and is known as one of New Zealand’s most promising young cattle judges.
T
he 22-year-old recently signed a contract to play professional rugby for Old Glory DC in the United States until June 2020 and will relocate this month. “My parents own Woodcote Holsteins, one of the top producing Holstein Friesian herds in the country. I have spent the past two years working for LIC as a genetics specialist,” says Gordon. “It is a diverse role, which I have really enjoyed and I have travelled all over the country and visited some impressive dairy farms. Talking with passionate dairy farmers not just about their cows, but also their farming businesses has been a bonus.
“This is my first professional rugby gig, and I will be based near the White House. I have been playing premiergrade, and it will be great to focus on rugby and test the boundaries. However, it will be hard being away from the cows because they are my other passion.” Gordon will be playing against teams from Texas, California and New York in 2020 when his team competes in a national competition. “The closest dairy farms will be a couple of hours’ drive from Washington, or in the neighbouring state of Pennsylvania. I plan to visit a few and think it will be an interesting learning experience and good for the soul.”
Gordon Fullerton is known as one of New Zealand’s up-and-coming show cattle judges

Gordon is heading to the USA for a season to play professional rugby Gordon is also gaining national recognition in the cattle show ring as a Holstein Friesian NZ member. He recently received the coveted Pitcairn’s Trophy after winning a junior judging competition in Christchurch. “I also took out the World Wide Sires all breeds junior judging competition at Stratford A&P Show. I have been judging cattle since I was a teenager and enjoy observing dairy cattle in the show ring. Judging takes skill as you have to be able to confidently articulate why you have placed one animal before another. We are looking for a functionally sound animal with a strong udder and sound feet and legs to help her live longer and be more productive. ”Speaking into a microphone in front of large crowds helps you gain confidence with public speaking and is a useful skill to have. Ever since I was little, I have been interested in
cows, and after my first calf club — all I wanted to do was be with cattle. I got into reading bull catalogues and talking to people about cows wherever we went. “My family has a good Friesian herd, and some were contract mated to breeding companies, and that helped my interest. “We are generational dairy farmers and my uncle is really into the breeding side of things.” Gordon started breeding with guinea pigs and chickens when he was young. “Cows don’t breed as easily as guinea pigs — they are a bit more technical. At school, I always planned to be in the dairy farming sector and went to Lincoln University — but study wasn’t really me. I then secured my job at LIC and have been able to carry on with my interest in bulls, cows and herd improvement. “I find nothing better than a cow that produces well. I got stuck into rugby

At DW Earthmoving we let our machines do the talking! With many years of industry experience, we provide a wide range of earth moving services at a competitive price along with top quality workmanship.
Working for LIC has helped Gordon upskill his interest in cattle genetics seriously because working in the office limited my physical activity. My family has been farming for a good four or five generations. “My brother is on the home farm now, and I will return one day. The farm is 160 hectares with a 450 split calving herd. We use a reasonably intensive system to push the production of each cow. We grass feed with supplements and are 50 per cent autumn calving. “I think the dairy farming future will be all right because we will always need milk and New Zealand cattle are predominantly grass-fed. I travel with the sales team to various regions
visiting farmers and I hope the general public open their eyes and protect our farmers more. “They need to realise that farmers and the whole agriculture sector are important for us as a nation because everyone is affected by it. “We are facing the same problems environmentally, and people need to be more positive and understand we are all in this together. Dairy farming is a positive aspect of New Zealand life. Simply ask people if they like milk in your coffee, those who drink normal milk need to realise it come from our cows.”

IMPROVING FARMER
WELLBEING by Denise Gunn
The award-winning Fit 4 Farming Trust is committed to improving rural health, with a vision for New Zealand to be the fittest, healthiest farming nation in the world.
F
ounder and former farmer, Ian Handcock, knows firsthand the benefits of physical fitness and the link to mental wellbeing. With a background of working in both the building and dairy farming industries, Ian is also a keen marathon runner, endurance cyclist and rugby coach. He has incorporated his skills and knowledge to shape the Fit 4 Farming Trust. The trust’s initial concept was developed when Ian attended the 2014 Kellogg’s rural leaders programme. “I remembered when I went from building to farming, I found dairy farming physically less demanding,” said Ian. “Suspecting there was a drop-off in the physical health of farmers due to the changing nature of farming, I did my project on farmer fitness. I have always had an interest in how some
people seem to be happier or others that achieve more.” Now working as a farm consultant, Ian is keen to help farmers improve their physical fitness levels and reach their goals. “I played ruby, then coached rugby right up until 2014. I always felt the fitter I was, the happier I was. I achieved more, enjoyed sport and life more and accomplished more in a year. I used the same philosophy when coaching sport and coached three unbeaten rugby teams in the Thames Valley. I also love strategy, and use techniques learnt through rugby to help coach farmers now.” Four years ago, Ian took up running, with two 100km ultramarathons as well as numerous shorter distances now under his belt. He has also completed the 400km K2 oneday cycle challenge in Coromandel and

biked twice around Lake Taupo. The Fit 4 Farming’s 1,400km cycle tour of rural New Zealand in 2016 aimed to raise awareness of the link between farmers physical fitness and mental wellbeing. “We promote balancing work with an active lifestyle to improve health and happiness,” said Ian. “The Fit 4 Farming’s logo portrays the workboot and the running shoe representing the balance between work and recreation. The name embodies personal wellbeing and the ability to perform your job to the best of your capability.” “In 2017, I organised the 12-hour milking world record where one man milked over 5,000 cows. It promoted good nutrition and preparing physically for peak season.” Ian is currently arranging a baton relay through rural New Zealand to illustrate how people disconnect from their work to connect with others. The trust has expanded to include coaching farmers and wellbeing workshops too. “The ultimate outcome would be to have farmers fit and healthy enough to manage the stresses of modernday farming. “I will add it is not just farmers who are feeling the stress. We all have times when we feel overwhelmed and find it difficult to rationalise our thoughts.” Ian said active people have a positive attitude to life, confidence in decisionmaking, better time management, create positive cultures and contribute to their communities. “They have a better metabolism, lower blood pressure, and can manage their weight better, which equates to better health. They will potentially suffer fewer injuries, have less burnout and will stay in the industry for longer.

STAY AFLOAT Through Fit 4 Farming, Ian promotes the importance of balancing work with an active lifestyle “Being able to step away from your farm with a recreation activity allows you to organise your mind and free some of the clutter from living in the job 24/7. No one can operate at 100 per cent all the time without a mental break. “Physical activity allows this to happen. The other important fact is the socialisation that sports give you.” Ian is in the process of taking Fit 4 Farming completely under his wing and winding up the trust. “I want to continue doing events that get rural people out there and active to improve their health.” Fit 4 Farming workshops will be advertised

THE ART OF RODEO by Ann van Engelen
Celebrating 60 years this coming February, the Waikato Rodeo Association believes in fostering, protecting and developing the tradition, art and sport of rodeo. Photo credit - Bryan Lowcay
“I
n 1959 Mr E F Olsen, Kihikihi School principal and Rodeo Association secretary ran a rodeo to raise funds for a school assembly hall as a way to get parents together. Head-teacher Gordon Bryant leant a two-acre paddock on his farm for the event,” says club member Bay Barlow. “They then needed another classroom, and so the rodeo continued. Local businesses joined to help run the event — it was nothing to have 10,000 spectators attend. In 1995 the rodeo moved from Gordon’s farm where it had been held for 17-years to the newlybuilt domain. The Kihikihi School Rodeo Association was renamed the Waikato
Rodeo Association to reflect the true area the club represented. “Today we host various rodeo teaching clinics, practice Jackpot days and fundraising treks leading up to the annual Waikato Rodeo. We encourage all age groups and riders to join us and learn barrel racing, roping and riding. “I have been involved in rodeo for 10 years. Being a farmer’s daughter, I rode horses from a young age wanting to learn to rope and be a real cowgirl. My friend Raewyn Gilbert and I started to learn roping, and away we went totally addicted, winning and losing some. As grannies, we are still out there just doing it and getting better. It is exciting watching the younger generation learn.

They are respectful and dress clean and smart in their cowboy clothes. “The animals are beautiful, well-cared for and kept as safe as possible. Each club has animal welfare officers and vets that check each animal before and after the rodeo, and if something isn’t right, they are rested. On a bucking animal, riders have eight seconds to win points. The animal is then checked over and heads off to their grassy fields for a well-earned rest if not going to buck at the next rodeo. “With team roping, the steer leaves the middle chute, and the header person catches the horns. When it is set nicely, the heeler person catches the heels, then the rope pressure is released, and the animal steps out and is free. In New Zealand, rodeo is leagues ahead of many other countries with animal safety. A lot of photos that are shown in a negative way are actually from overseas rodeos. “Children as young as four years old compete in barrel racing on their little ponies. It is amazing to watch their skill. The junior steer ride also shows the talent of young riders. There is an art to every event with specific ways and rules with safety a high priority. “The Waikato rodeo gets up to 6,000 people attending thanks to our many committed sponsors, and in 2022 we will host the national finals. It is a good sport, and you learn animal welfare, comradery, a high level of horsemanship. It tests your mind and body as we practise most weekends and have national champions involved, including the Church family, who are a

huge national rodeo influence. There are also high school teams that travel internationally as well and seeing the girls competing is spectacular. The animals all have names, and there are some really big bulls. Having a person on their back isn’t a weight issue as they are bred for rodeo, as are the bucking horses. Rodeo is progressing well, and if something is not right, we correct it — the best we can. MPI officers are on-site and check for any issues as it is about health and safety for everyone, including animals. It is a misunderstood sport from some people. “Those who understand it find it challenges your determination and builds confidence. Everyone helps each other and riders dress smartly and show off their beautiful horses. The places you travel around our beautiful country,
with your horse in tow, make it all the more meaningful and special. You meet interesting, like-minded people — that is another special thing about rodeo. “Our club supports charities such as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Life Education Trust. The season is almost over after the upcoming rodeo so we can rest and dream up new moves. There could be up to 47 teams from across the country team roping here, along with the many other contestants gunning for points to get to the national finals for titles. “We have an awesome support network from Waikato and beyond, and a lot of farmers enjoy the day out to get off-farm.” The Waikato Rodeo 60th anniversary is on February 15 at Kihikihi Domain with a start at 8.30am.

the beach. Animals, birds and fish are known to think plastic is food, and a seagull could feed it to its babies — fish eat it as well. It clogs their belly, and they starve to death because they think they are full. “Our teacher Mrs Young taught us about plastic. I got the idea of stopping plastic straws from the school milk cartons because we remove the straw from the cartons and most of us poke a finger through the hole to drink our milk. “We love that Fonterra provides us with milk. It is important to grow strong bones and stay healthy. Some families don’t have much food, so having milk helps fill their tummies. “We love drinking it after fitness, and some children have theirs when they are doing silent reading. “It can be expensive, so it is really kind that Fonterra gives us milk for free, we appreciate it so much. “I am thinking of creating something for the local wearable arts competition with the straws. “Last year I entered the Go Green Award with my little brother. I am trying to help people understand that you don’t need all the packaging. “I made a dress out of My Food Bag wool cool insulation packaging and repurposed cable ties. “We won a merit award in the Recycled Fashion category. Now the excess wool cool insulation gets used in our school garden to create a cosy bed for the chooks. “The Fonterra people thought not having straws is a good idea. Having less plastic is good for the environment,
animals and people. The more we help animals and nature, the better because they can’t look after themselves. “Metal straws, coffee cups and reusable bags are much better.” Fonterra’s director of sustainability, Carolyn Mortland, says the company recognise the growing concern around plastic packaging. ”We are working really hard to make our packaging sustainable and know it is an issue schools have been worried about. “We took the opportunity to have Ruby come in and talk to us about her idea and have since had a lot of positive feedback from schools on making the change. “While our plastic straws and wrappers on our milk packs are recyclable, we appreciate some plastic straws don’t always end up in the recycling bins and are at risk of ending up as litter in the ocean. “One solution we have been exploring is to move away from the small 200ml single-serve milk packs towards a onelitre format, which is a really sustainable packaging choice. “The one-litre pack doesn’t use straws, or plastic wrapping and allows schools to minimise milk wastage by having more control over serving size.” Every one-litre pack removes the need for five single-serve packs. “It is great that Fonterra is making a difference and changing its packaging immediately. “They told me that they would be 100 per cent sustainable by 2025,” says Ruby.

WATER MATTERS Turn sunshine into water by Andy Bryenton
A new generation of solar-powered deep-bore pumps is getting rid of the need for a generator in an old tin shed placed over far-flung wellheads. With improvements in battery and controller tech, there’s no reason why even the most out of the way water source can’t be utilised, reticulated and harnessed to help out in the dry weather when rain is not forthcoming. Here’s the scenario; you’ve located water in a deep aquifer, far out on the part of the farm where it would be great to have some troughs for the herd or a backup supply for irrigation. Mains power is so far away that rigging all that wire makes the job a cost to benefits nightmare. In the old days, the answer was to permanently relegate an old diesel or petrol generator to duties over the wellhead, powering a submersible
pump with enough juice to bring water to the surface. The grim realities of hydrodynamics and physics meant that solar power was sometimes too weak a motive force to impel good clean H2O up a bore and into the pipe, troughs and tanks. There have been changes afoot. Now, there are plenty of places online and in your local area who will sell a solarpowered submersible pump system
Pond/Dam/Tank Liners LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED FOR OVER 25 YEARS

Solar methods of rural bore water extraction have become more and more viable as technology, the same used in electric vehicles and solar power stations, improves
able to achieve a flow rate of more than 10 litres a minute at a depth of up to 85 metres. That rate will, of course, increase from a trickle to a flood if the bore is shallower. The great thing with a solar pump is that, so long as the sun rises in the morning, it will work all day, pumping with better efficiency, these days than most windmills. Photovoltaic technology has few moving parts, so as long as the panels are pointed up, the pump will continue to work with the absolute minimum of maintenance. This fairly hefty pump example, which works in any bore more than three inches, takes only a single 1,100 watt panel to keep it turning over. The attached controller will turn it off when it fills an adjacent tank, and the
whole system can be augmented with a secondary panel and batteries to work all night as well. The best part is, you can control such pumps by tablet or smartphone with the right adaptors, meaning that there’s no need to ride out to the boundaries with diesel and tools to ensure a drink for the livestock. Check the level, flip the switch and monitor flow from wherever you are. A combination of brushless motors, better photovoltaic efficiency and more compact batteries means that a complete solar pump system can cost less than the equivalent generator and pump, considering that well drilling costs will be the same for both units. Considerably less, if you factor in a lifetime of fuel.

WATER MATTERS Drilling down into water issues by Andy Bryenton
There are a few core inventions that have helped turn us, as a society, from nomadic hunters into civilised farmers and builders. The wheel isn’t even one of them; amazingly the Inca people got on well without it! Along with fire, pottery, language and grain storage, the well is one of those things which has taken us from caves to skyscrapers. The earliest cities, in places like Sumeria and Egypt, were built around wells. A well 5,000 years old is at the very centre of Cairo, for example. Water was scarce in these dry lands, and a well was an asset worth defending, as it was also a de facto trading post, army mustering point and hub for irrigation and animal breeding. Water makes

farms, farms make wealth, and wealth, eventually, makes empires. However, today’s wells are very different from the hand-hewn stone-lined ones of antiquity. These days it’s not a dowser with a forked stick who seeks out underground water. Hydrologists can tell a lot from the shape of the land, as well as from the kind of rock that underlies it. These professionals can also use ground-penetrating waves to find water, acting like the sonar ‘ping’ a submarine uses to detect enemy vessels during wartime. Gravel, limestone, porous cracked-up rocks or underground sandstone can trap large quantities of useful water. Once a likely spot is found, the trick is to drill down deep enough to establish a productive well that will last the distance through all seasons. More than just a hole in the ground, a modern well is usually a bore sheathed with longlasting materials to prevent cave-ins and erosion. Deep in the underground water table, the bottom of the well is made of sturdy mesh or perforated pipe to allow water in but keep it flowing and stop it from
Even in arid landscapes, rainfall on hills and mountains eventually reaches underground aquifers, ready to be used as a managed resource
clogging up. Now a suitable pump is needed to lift water to the surface. Modern wells usually utilise electrical means of pumping, which vary in kilowatt power according to the depth of the bore and the volume required.

“The Department of Health recommends for most tanks, yearly draining and scrubbing out.”
When it’s dry above ground, water reserves replenished by rains months or even years past await beneath the surface. Finding such reserves, and engineering the means to tap into them, is no longer a job or superstition and guesswork, but one conducted with satellite maps, specialist drilling trucks and advanced technology.

WATER MATTERS ADVERTORIAL
Rural water filtration experts If water quality is an issue, Purewater Products NZ is a Waikatobased company that’s been in business for more than 25 years and specialises in all aspects of rural water filtration and treatment. It includes filtration both for residential/lifestyle and whole farm systems. Rural water filtration includes treatment of rainwater, bore, stream and spring water supplies. Residentially, Purewater Products has filtration options both at the kitchen tap and for the whole house. For those on rainwater, we can offer advice on the best solution. As rainwater uses tanks for water storage, we recommend an ultraviolet steriliser to eliminate bacteria and remove viruses. In particular, E coli is a risk in rainwater and other water supplies that store water in a tank. It can cause stomach and gut upsets. Removing the dirt and sediment is also essential, as well as ensuring the water is giardia and cryptosporidium safe. For bore and spring water supplies, both for house and farm, we recommend testing the water first before making a recommendation. At Purewater
Products we can effectively remove iron, manganese, and nitrates, address pH and water hardness. Rural water supplies that feed farms often require filtration to meet Fonterra’s water testing standards. This testing can result in farmers incurring penalties and water restrictions. Ideally, treating the water for potential and existing contaminants thus avoiding penalties is desirable. At Purewater Products, our staff have experience in advising on filtration solutions to meet Fonterra water testing. We offer a free site visit throughout the Waikato to give advice and make recommendations on the best solution. Contact us by phone or email, or visit our online store for more information at purewater.co.nz. Alternatively, you can come into our showroom at 431a Te Rapa Road, Hamilton.

HAMILTON
SPOTLIGHT ON
Always something happening by Andy Bryenton
As the third fastest-growing municipality in the nation, the other two are both parts of the Auckland sprawl, Hamilton has long been seen as a hub for agricultural research and innovation, for trade, commerce and education. It’s the central position and role of this up-and-coming city, which makes it an interesting place to visit again and again. That’s because the calendar of events here is so varied and so jam-packed that there’s nearly always an excuse to visit. Aside from the obvious; the massive, unmissable National Field Days held each year, there are numerous other events in and around Hamilton that provide every excuse needed to head on into town and enjoy what’s on offer. The town that produced two consecutive Labour Party prime ministers and our Governor-General is also the town, which brought us the Rocky Horror Picture Show, thanks to local creative artist Richard O’Brien,
and the voice of Dame Malvina Major. So there’s plenty of arts and culture to enjoy here, including February’s Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival, boasting 50 acts spanning Korean pop music to opera. A headline name on the card is Wellingtonbased collective Fly My Pretties, who are renowned for their live performances. March heralds the cap being popped off of the nation’s premier event for brewers and lovers of the ‘amber dew of life’. The great Kiwi Beer Festival brings together artisans who craft unique brews and those who love to experiment with flavour matches for

our favourite cold beverage. Expect chilled drinks and cool music as the festival unfolds. Of course, there’s another massive feast for the senses in store for gourmands at May’s Great NZ Wine and Food Festival. It will see top chefs sharing some trade secrets, food producers showing off their latest wares, and some masterful ideas to turn your home kitchen into a more creative space. Want more? Well, Balloons Over
Waikato will be turning 21 this year, with a coming of age spectacular. It will once again include massed balloon ascents and the captivating, music-accompanied ‘night glow’ when a fleet of balloons are lit up like lanterns in the evening. Throw in world rally action, film festivals, live concerts and live theatre year-round, and the National Fieldays is just one of the hundreds of reasons to come and visit.

Government alters NAIT proposal
DAIRY
Beef + Lamb New Zealand is pleased the government has dropped several proposals to amend the National Animal Identification and Tracing Act. “B+LNZ supports the changes to NAIT. We believe the focus on greater compliance activity for those not doing the right thing with their NAIT account will be backed by farmers who are meeting their obligations,” says B+LNZ chief executive Sam McIvor. “Farmers tell us they are increasingly getting frustrated with others who are letting the sector down. We welcome the government’s decision to drop a proposal for the Crown to take ownership of NAIT data on behalf of PICAs, all farmers and the wider sector. “This data is fundamental to biosecurity and market assurances. However, it also has huge potential as a way to integrate whole-of-life quality assurance into the story New Zealand tells to the world. That is why industry ownership is so important. “We are also pleased that the proposal to remove the ‘unsafe to tag’ exemption in five years will now be a review of the exemption. The health
SAFETY FIRST
and safety of our farmers must always be paramount. The increase in the penalties and infringement fees, such as the $400 fine per non-compliant animal, is significant. We understand the Ministry for Primary Industries will exercise a level of discretion and work with farmers alongside OSPRI and its stakeholders to encourage and drive greater compliance.” Mr McIvor says NAIT plays a vital role in managing food safety and biosecurity risks. It underpins New Zealand’s market assurances and supports the sector to meet customer requirements. “As the response to Mycoplasma bovis has found, there is a significant cost to the sector if farmers do not comply with NAIT. It is vital farmers maintain complete and accurate NAIT records for the speedy tracing of animals and ultimately to protect everybody’s farms and the wider industry. “A lack of complete NAIT data is also a barrier to moving towards more cost-

effective, risk-based management of bovine tuberculosis. The robustness of the traceability system is really important for eradicating M bovis. NAIT compliance is New Zealand law, and whole-of-life traceability will be increasingly critical for beef eligibility for some premium markets.
“We understand some farmers do find using NAIT challenging. However as a shareholder in OSPRI, B+LNZ, along with DairyNZ and DINZ, is strongly motivated to see farmers get value for levies invested. We are focussed on ensuring ongoing improvements are made to NAIT to realise its potential.”
