ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

septi-cure is: › Cost Effective › Easy To use › Improves Soakage

› Reduces Solids and Scums › Eliminates Nasty Odours › Reduces Costly Pump-outs

Silver Fern Farms Co-operative chair Rob Hewett says the special dividend will be welcome news to shareholders. “This is the first dividend shareholders have received since 2008. Their support and patience as we have developed our Plate to Pasture value added strategy over the past seven years has been critical to Silver Fern Farms. “Following distribution of this dividend and the redemption of our Supplier Investment Shares completed last week, our co-operative will have distributed a total of $40 million to shareholders.” This dividend of 30 cents per share on all ordinary shares and rebate shares follows the completion of Shanghai Maling Aquarius’ $267 million investment in Silver Fern Farms Limited and the distribution to the co-operative

The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Young Farmers region will resurrect a trophy that honoured the life of a former president who lost his life in a selfless act of compassion. Co-organiser and the region’s NZ Young Farmers’ field officer Casey Huffstutler said there were some incredible stories among past members that needed to be shared and reminisced over. “NZ Young Farmers has produced many great primary industry leaders and has a huge impact on young people’s lives and our region is no different. This event is a chance for us to thank those who began it all and to hear just how important the organisation was to their development.” Ms Huffstutler will award the Allan Smith Memorial Cup for the first time in many years as part of the launch, alongside the first recipient, 79-year-old Robert Maxted. For Mr Maxted being awarded the Waipa District trophy for Leadership and Citizenship in 1969 was one of the most special moments of his life. “It was a very prestigious award and I was very honoured and humbled to receive it.” The trophy had a tragic inception and commemorates a dark moment in young farmers’ history. In 1963 the then National Federation President of NZ Young Farmers and South Auckland Council member, Allan Smith was picnicking at Kawhia Beach

with his family when a young girl got into trouble in the sea. Allan ran to rescue her and the next wave dumped her onshore but Allan never returned. In his honour, the Waipa District introduced the Allan Smith Memorial trophy in memory of the young leader who rose to the highest office of Dominion President. “Allan stood for everything we value in the organisation — that selfless desire to help others — and it’s still the core of our region today with members raising large sums of money to give back to the community every year, as well as donating voluntary time to a number of projects,” said Casey Huffstutler, NZ Young Farmers field officer, Ms Huffstutler. reads over some historical Young Farmers’ records The event will be held at Don Rowlands Centre at Karapiro Chairman’s Awards. Tickets cost $50 on Saturday, February 11 at 5pm, in including dinner and can be purchased conjunction with the region’s annual online at tickets@youngfarmers.co.nz.

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN MORGAN THE FARMING MUMS NZ FACEBOOK PAGE AS IT IS WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2013 AS A MEANS FOR FARMING MUMS TO HAVE A COMMUNITY TO TURN TO FOR SUPPORT AND CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER VIA SOCIAL MEDIA ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

“I

n a lot of places the sense of community isn’t there for people due to the transiency of farmers and I am hoping that the page will help more people connect,” said page organiser Chanelle O’Sullivan. There are more than 8,200 members on the page so far. “As a rural online community it works well because people are unable to have face to face contact so much anymore due to logistics and commitments. With this idea there is always someone online.” Chanelle says the code of conduct for the site helps keep conversations in control and this has been crucial in the success of the longevity of the page.

The ladies build friendships and receive advice on topics ranging from children and relationship issues, to farming advice, employee relations, animal care and even recipe ideas. As a result the group have produced the Farming Mums NZ Cookbook as a way to raise funds to support St John Ambulance and the Rural Support Trust. “Over time we had a lot of recipes being shared as ladies were asking for different meal ideas and we decided producing a cookbook would be a good option.” The book took approximately two years to produce. It is full colour magazine style with hundreds of professionally taken images from around the country.

Dairy farming mum Sam Carter is a part of the supportive group “I was picturing something simple, like a ring binder type book, but a lady on the page is a designer, Nicola Satherley, and she stepped up and has done a superb job. Different photographers were involved and we hosted shared lunches and all made a dish to be photographed. It was a huge effort. We are all really busy farming mums, there were a lot of

adage nz socks Farming mums from across the country have contributed recipes to create the Farming Mums NZ Cookbook crucial to rural communities. We want to make sure they have as much support as possible. “Rural Support is important for supporting farmers’ mental health and St John are a vital part of our communities,” says Chanelle. “Making the cookbook brought us closer together and having it in our hands as a finished product made it all worth it and we were approached by the national libraries to stock it.” The book includes a very diverse range of recipes including curries, baking and cider. “There are lots of good ideas and they are all practical and easy to make. They are great if you have shearers coming or the farm advisor and bank manager. “The next step for Farming Mums will hopefully be weekly blogs from various sources including accountants, vets,

counsellors and people in education. I want to turn being a ‘farming mum’ into a very positive thing and give the ladies the tools to have a positive life. “There is a lot of support in the group. As soon as someone opens up and calls for help people will step up. We had an incident of an accident where a farmer was missing. Others rallied to help find him, and they did, sadly he passed away due to a hunting accident. They then set up a funding page to help the farming mum in a tough time. “It is incredible how the community have come together. A lot of people are dedicated to it. We have a team of eight administrators as well who do a hell of a lot of work. “We also have our ‘Ask Daisy — Farming Mums NZ’ facebook page and this gets up to 10 posts a day which are kept anonymous.”

3

14

Chanelle says the page is only getting stronger and there is a lot of industry support. “Through the group I want to make sure everyone has equal opportunity and are upskilled and ready for what life throws at them. Suddenly as a female you can go from a career to having a baby and living rurally. “At times you can’t think outside the box to keep doing what you are passionate about. “I want to encourage people to be able to continue with their passion outside and inside of their farming life. Living rurally is a privilege rather than a handbrake, it depends how you adapt to your surroundings and Farming Mum’s NZ can certainly help you do that.” To order the cookbook go to the website www.farmingmums.com/ online-shop.

he couple live in Putaruru where John manages a 620 cow property. Monique worked as a consulting officer for DairyNZ until she had their daughter last year. They then found it difficult as a family to find reliable relief staff and get time off the farm so she started a business supplying relief milkers. “I have six staff so far on the payroll. There are two types of worker available. One can go out and help as the second person in the shed and the other can take more responsibility and do the whole milking, including getting cows in, washing the plant and clean up

the yard on their own,” says Monique. The staff have been sourced mainly through word of mouth and Monique says this is a great way to find people as they are already known to be reliable. “It is great for mums who want to work the odd day, as it means they can say yay or nay to work opportunities and fit things around their family responsibilities. The idea is that I match them up with the farmer that suits their timeframe of availability. “Experience is preferred but I have helped train people if necessary. Good reliable relief milkers are hard to find. Clients have said they are pleased with the idea as it takes pressure off them

Monique started Milk Maids to help farmers have time off

“It means the farmer can go away without worrying about his farm and be able to switch off mentally and relax. It is important for their well being — mentally, emotionally and physically. “When I was working for Dairy NZ I saw how hard farmers work and how hard it is for them to have family time or time off and accomplish a bit of work life balance. “The farming lifestyle can be demanding and you live where you work so you can’t ever really switch off — you are always looking at the paddocks. It is really good to have a break where you can come back feeling refreshed. My sole aim is to help the farmers get the rest they need. Even just having one milking off every now and then helps.” The couple are both 23 years old. Monique grew up on a farm in Tirau, and went to university and studied Agriculture Commerce before working for Dairy NZ as a consulting officer. This entailed holding discussion groups on different farms for farmers. “I would head out to a property and chat about seasonal topics such as how to improve things like feed production from the previous year,” says Monique. “I really enjoyed interacting with the

farmers and saw a lot of farms and many common issues. My personal interest was people management and staff and I could really see how beneficial it is for people to get away from the farm for a little while.” John grew up on a farm in Taranaki and studied Agriculture Science and the couple are looking to go sharemilking next year. “Growing up on farms has helped us hugely. We really know and enjoy the lifestyle. It is what our parents and friends know and it is what we talk about. We would like to own our own farm somewhere eventually and we are hoping Milk Maids takes off as a business to help others enjoy the lifestyle.” Monique says what normally happens is a farmer will have a relief milker to call but if that person isn’t available they call her. “I match them up with who wants to work at that time. It means my milkers get more work and they are guaranteed to be paid on time. “There is less hassle and not so much paper work for the farmer or the worker to do as I collect the necessary details such as tax codes.

“This removes a lot of worry as I am the middle person and the farmer is charged monthly. Milk Maids is a professional way to hire someone.” For relief milkers it means they get to work through a variety of sheds and different herds with guaranteed work and pay. “Using Milk Maids does give flexibility and gives you or your staff well deserved time off-farm and knowing all care is being taken makes things more relaxing. With the recent tough times there are less staff on farms so being able to cover time off this way is really good.

ADVERTORIAL

Assumption vs reality by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

With the increasing global demand for certified organic food, comes a myriad of assumptions and fairy tales, fabricated by the chemical cowboys, in an endeavour to continue to sell their toxic chemical products. Hello cowboys! The consumers have already changed and are demanding safe, certified, nutritiously dense food produced in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner. The chemical age is on the way out, as consumers call out for healthy, wholesome food produced from healthy, wholesome soils that maintain a healthy, wholesome environment. Here at Agrissentials we specialise in

multi-mineral, microbial rich, live, living fertilisers designed to bring health and vitality back to soils and back to our food, together with enhancement of the environment, the waterways, the lakes and the fore shores. This new consumer demand for better quality food opens the door to all aspects of food production, plus better returns for better quality food. The change from agro-chemical production to natural

certified production is seamless. It all happens in the soil with Agrissentials best on earth Organx™ fertilisers by increasing the microbial wealth and the multi-mineral value in the soil. The other two critical factors are sunlight and water. Get this equation right and production happens. Agrissentials multi-mineral system is The Key to plant, animal and human immunity. Instead of just synthetic N, P and K, Agrissentials fertilisers have a full complement of macro elements and trace minerals, necessary to build strong immunity to fight pest and disease. The natural minerals in Agrissentials fertilisers are converted by the microorganisms to a plant available form, and wrapped in humus, so that they don’t leach from the soil. The plant’s roots reach into the humus and extract the minerals they need. Within this system these minerals are recognised at the cellular level of the plant — the ultimate level for plant uptake, growth and energy. The plant then passes these minerals onto the animals and humans, which in turn helps to build their immune systems. It’s a cunning old natural plan that has been operating on the planet for millions of years. Please, also note that the humus

manufactured by the microorganisms not only holds the minerals from leaching, but also increases the water retaining quality in the soil. As a commercial grower for twenty odd years and a commercial fertiliser manufacturer for 30 years, I have experienced both sides of the fence, both the natural and the chemical. Whoever set up the natural system installed all the checks and balances to sustain life on the planet — the ultimate being a full complement of natural minerals, to build immunity into all life. The introduction of the NPK balance sheet theory and its lack of natural minerals has opened up a wide corridor for the introduction of pharmaceutical rescue remedies, sorry no cures. Keeping children safe on farms

4 ANZ SURPLUS TRUCKS NZ Wide Service

Farmers are being encouraged to keep children safe on farms over the school holidays with a heightened risk of accidents. Accidents involving children on the farm peak over December and January, and account for more than 22 per cent of injuries to those aged 15 years and under. Seven children died as a result of an accident on a farm between 2013– 2015. In the 12 years up until 2015, nearly 20,000 children were injured on the farm. WorkSafe’s sector leader Agriculture Al McCone says children are a vital component of farming family life and it is important this tradition continues. “We do not want to stop children having fun on the farm or helping out mum and dad with jobs, however farmers are responsible for ensuring children are not put at risk. Managing the risks for children is different from managing them for adults,” said Mr McCone. “Many risks can easily be managed by, for example, using vehicles suitable for passengers, fencing artificial ponds, covering pits or even creating ‘safe kid zones’ in dairy sheds, or working together with neighbours as farmers have always done. “This means farming parents can still keep their children safe during busy

Many farmers were used to working alone for much of the year, but it was a good idea to think about health and safety when children joined them on the farm,” said Mr McCone.

The velvet leaf and flower needs to be found and eradicated

Velvetleaf has been confirmed on 30 properties in the Waikato region. It was most recently found in a maize crop just before Christmas by a landowner in the Morrinsville area. Waikato Regional Council pest plant officers are now working with the landowner to develop a biosecurity management plan for the property. “Now is the right time to be looking for velvetleaf, and particularly near gateways where machinery first enter, as well as in the first 12–20 outside rows of the crop,” said biosecurity pest plants team leader, Darion Embling. “Right now the buttery-yellow flowers will be starting to develop and may even be out, and its distinctive seed pods or capsules should still be green. “Farmers who spot velvetleaf need to move fast to eradicate the plants before they seed and this pest spreads

further. Our pest plant officers can provide expert advice around how to best do this.” Meanwhile, pest plant officers have begun inspecting about 70 properties found to be at risk of being infested with velvetleaf in April last year. This work is continuing, but so far no new infestations have been found. In the Waikato a small number of the infestations found last year were linked to imported fodder beet seeds, but subsequent tracing found it had spread in the Waikato via infested maize and maize silage, and by unclean harvest machinery. Velvetleaf is considered one of the world’s worst cropping weeds, and reduced yields, combined with the cost of control, could mean a significant loss of income if not controlled. Visit waikatoregion.govt.nz/velvetleaf or call 0800 BIOSEC (246 732) for help.

Steps to joint health by John Arts

Part one: Osteoarthritis can cause anything from mild discomfort to seriously restricting quality of life. While medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs provide predictable results, nutritional therapy is more unpredictable. Experimentation is important. Some people find their arthritis is greatly influenced by diet while others less so. I generally recommend that people keep clear of common citrus fruits and acidic fruits in general. I am helping one person who by trial and error has found she is very sensitive to strawberries. I am not sure why but small joint arthritis, especially hand joints, seem to be more sensitive to acidic foods. I start most people on an anti-inflammatory diet. The key components are to reduce inflammatory fats, reduce sugars and refined carbohydrates. We target antiinflammatory oils, appropriate protein sources and increase antioxidant dense plant foods. Over the next few columns we will explore the specific components of this type of eating. Not

only will it help joints but is excellent for general health. With supplements, my general approach is to start people on a programme that is most likely to get a positive response in six to eight weeks. I like to keep things simple and usually start with high doses of Omega-3 fish oil for its anti-inflammatory function. To this we to add 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin sulphate, 1,500mg of glucosamine sulphate and 200mg of a 95% bioavailable curcumin (turmeric) extract. In some cases, especially spinal arthritis, I add antioxidant complexes and extra magnesium to relax tissue surrounding the joint. We will maintain these high initial doses usually for one to three months before reducing. Most people start to notice the difference after six weeks. Feel free to contact me for more information. New Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

17

12

After ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

Come along to one of our expos and see how it works for yourself! (See below for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood Dave had tried everything; pressure and lots more. every time he was overseas he would search for anything “We have testimonials from that could possibly help. people with over fifty years While on one of these of back problems and even them in a number of overseas trips eight years ago, have in New Zealand for Dave discovered the Teeter schools special needs children” Hang-Ups. “The first time I their told me, “the blood to the tried it, the pain disappeared he brain helps these kids and and I was completely pain the results are excellent” free for about 30 minutes, What this means for the nothing had done that” he aging population is that it told me. Dave never believed helps maintain the health of it would fix him, “as specialists the brain as we all get older. had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place Dave told me that he to go every time I wanted realised that, had he not some serious relief”. tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I To Dave’s surprise the more would still be a miserable he used the table the longer grumpy bugger, living with the pain stayed away, until pain, that is why we do the after nearly three months he shows, people need to try it was completely pain free, “I for themselves” he told me couldn’t believe it’ he told me “most people actually get “I had spent large amounts of off with the pain either gone money on every form of treat- or considerably less” he said ment available and here was “we let the tables do the Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been something I had never heard talking” Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It uses gravity to apply traction, the Posture: Poor traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life. If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

BACK

or

TESTIMONIAL

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY

In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Paul Gordon Cambridge

NECK PAIN?

Come along for a free treatment Here in New Zealand, Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in his research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused By Gravity

Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.
