The cases have been sentenced during the past three months, with the final cases being made public, resulting in convictions and a total of $318,025 in fines. The prosecutions were taken by Waikato Regional Council under the Resource Management Act. “Farming is obviously a huge and vital industry that contributes to this region’s economy and communities in many ways,” said WRC regional compliance manager, Patrick Lynch. “The farming enterprises that feature in these seven cases reflect a very small portion of that industry. However, clearly, there are still some in the industry

who are not taking their environmental obligations seriously and continue to let the side down. “It is now well over 20 years since the current environmental regulation has been in place to manage effluent in this region. I have no doubt that many will be disappointed to see cases such as these still happening. “Many farmers have excellent systems in place, but we continue to urge all rural businesses to invest in the infrastructure needed to manage effluent effectively, and to ensure they manage those systems every day they are in use.”

Over the cattle stop feature What’s happening over the cattle stop? As any farmer knows, the answer is — ‘everything!’ — as you can see in our light-hearted front page cartoon. This January the Waikato Farming Lifestyles is a little different, as we’ve matched all of the

top agricultural support businesses between our covers with a bustling rural scene on page one. The aim of the game is to match the numbers next to each little image of Kiwi farm life to the businesses who exemplify them.

Positive export onion season

January 2021

The 2021 New Zealand export onion season is off to an early and positive start. “Amongst all the turmoil created by Covid and the weather, it is great to be able to report that exports of New Zealand onions to Indonesia are underway, two months earlier than last year,” says Onions New Zealand chief executive, James Kuperus. “This is thanks to New Zealand Government trade officials’ efforts to keep trade open and a decision by Indonesian officials to release quota early. Seventy-eight tonnes of onions harvested earlier in January left for Indonesia. “While this is small, it signals the season is underway early, and prices reflect the additional costs of growing and exporting during a pandemic. “The growing season has been favourable for onion growers. There has

been adequate rainfall, and the quality is very good. The drought in Auckland did not materialise. While water was short, there was frequent rain during the growing season.” Total onion exports are expected to be between 170,000 and 175,000 tonnes in 2021. New Zealand onions are exported to 45 countries. Last year, the industry was worth $145 million. New Zealand onions are internationally renowned for their long keeping qualities and the industry, for its food safety practices. “New Zealand growers planted approximately six per cent less onions than last year. This was due to the uncertainty created by Covid, however, yield is up so perhaps the season will be only about three per cent down on last.”

Conserving native species BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Wayne Bennett has had a lifetime of experience propagating and growing native plants of the Waikato region that he has used to regenerate the area around him.

“I

n the 1970s my wife Sue and I started collecting seeds and propagating plants to regenerate native bush around our property near Ngaruawahia,” says Wayne. “I have now had more than 40 years’ experience of establishing native trees and observing the natural succession of native plant species. Sue is an early childhood teacher and a big support to me. “We believe education and conservation go hand in hand. “When we were looking for our land we found a property near the Waikato River with a regenerating kanuka forest on it.

5

It seemed the best thing we could do was improve the bush and improve the value by adding to the existing forest. “The riverbank had all kinds of weeds growing so I asked the council if we could plant it in native bush and the community was involved in the planting. The people became really enthusiastic and suggested we do it annually. I believe we don’t always have to ask for financial support for community projects, and a few of us grew the trees to carry the project on.” Wayne then involved local schools to help plant the river banks at Ngaruawahia.

Liam and Tamsin McLaughlan were helpers at one of the first planting sites Wayne established “The town is full of riverbanks, and I thought it would encourage pride in the town as well and then I worked to promote eco sourcing for local native plants. I started my own nursery and eventually purchased a small property to run the nursery from. “My daughter Julia did a degree in ecology and environmental planning and now works with me. I am really lucky as our

enterprise will continue through Julia and her husband Stefan. “At Forest Flora, we are committed to using plants that are growing naturally here in Waikato. Every region in the country has plants unique to the area, and it is important to protect and save them. A piece of native forest or wetland is made up of a matrix of different species.

“I have now had more than 40 years’ experience”

The staff at Forest Flora each have different skills when it comes to working in the nursery and planting “They all compete, but with different strategies. There are tall and short, some that climb up into the sunlight or perch in trees. Others grow in the shade down on the ground and never grow big. Some produce masses of seeds or grow fast and mature at a young age but then not cope with the shade of the other trees around them. All trees have their strengths and weaknesses — it is a matter of knowing how and where to put them together. “I have spent the last 40 years getting to know how plants work by going out collecting seeds and seeing how and where plants grow, observing like a hunter or fisherman getting to know the lie of the land and their quarry.

“Someone will contact me with a patch of forest to restore, or riverbank to stabilise and I now know what should grow in each place. Our philosophy is to try not to change anything any more than we have to and reinstate it to how it was. “It is important to have food for the birds all year round to help them prosper. Because we are growing about 100 different species of native plants, there is always something with fruit on every part of the year. We always plant a mix such as kawakawa, nikau, native fuschia and coprosma, puripuri and pigeon wood. Like many native trees, pigeon wood needs male and female trees to seed.

Pigeon wood is one of the colourful native trees Wayne plants to help feed kereru “Our home has become a Mecca for native birds. It is important to set rat traps because rats eat the seeds and starve the birds. “They also get into the bird nests and eat the eggs or babies. A kereru may only lay one egg at a time, and the rats can eat them. “We hope if the birds nest here they will stay in the area all year. Even trees that don’t feed the birds protect the trees that do feed them. “I do this work because someone needs to. Our team of people is like a

community of plants, and we all have different skills. When we plant for other people, we return in time to observe how the plants are growing. We never stop learning at Forest Flora and looking after our native plants means they will look after us. “Having a piece of native bush doesn’t invade the pasture, it provides shade for the stock and keeps the water cool in streams to help the fish and feed the birds. Forests soak up carbon and people like seeing bush, it is part of being Kiwi.”

Recognising

NATIVE TREASU RES BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Brett Sutherland is a wood carving artist with a vision to use native timber to remind us of the natural treasures we have and have had around us.

“W

hen I was 16 years old I started bone carving and ended up travelling the world carving miniature compact sculptures called Netsuke. I was living in St Martin on my catamaran that I built in Brazil and became known as the bone carver of the Caribbean,” says Brett. “I took up the art of tattooing as well. I returned home to be with my family as my mum became ill and I built one of the first tiny homes in her driveway. Since then I have been making

2

costumes, armour and helmets for the film industry.” Brett is also a Zoologist and recently completed his first full-sized totem pole of six coastal native birds relevant to the Kaipara area, carved from a totara log. “The coastal native birds are the fairy tern, kingfisher, oystercatcher, white-faced heron, pied shag and the spoonbill. I fell in love with totem poles when I was living in British Columbia, staying with carvers on reservations. I was totally drawn to their stories,

designs, what they represent and why, and knew I would carve my own totem.

“I took up the art of tattooing as well” “My nine bird pole has three common at top, three endangered and three extinct. Other sets include eight

commonly seen native birds, eight endangered native bird species and eight extinct New Zealand native birds. “Full-size sculptures are educational, interactive and represent what is important. I see our birds as the most treasured taonga that we have and want to design totems with specific birds for all areas of New Zealand. “I started during the first lockdown and was very happy carving all day. To begin I carve a miniature pole called a maquette which takes up to 50 hours.

Carving totem poles of endangered, extinct and common birds from native timber has become Brett’s passion The large totem took me some 400 hours to create. “Once I have made the maquette I pull the bark off the large log and set it up on stands. I draw the plan on the wood and use a chainsaw for the first cuts. It is then all chisel work and no sandpaper. Each piece is finished with oil to protect the wood. “The Native Americans have a ceremony for each pole raised. They say once raised the totem pole takes on a spirit and becomes alive. When it eventually falls they leave it, as that is what the pole wants to do. Some stand for 100 years before falling over.” Brett believes our most treasured thing as humans is genetics and that we need sculptures that are understood to remind us of life.

“Genetics mean life and there is nothing more important in my view than what is seen around us, what is not commonly seen and that which has gone before us such as moa. People see the sculptures and say wouldn’t it be amazing if we saw them walking around. “I am a self-taught carver because at school my teacher was uninterested in helping me. “The biggest honour I have had in recognition of my carving was master carver Fred LeGar offering me to attend the carving school in Whakatane. That is a rare offer for someone like myself but I was returning overseas at the time. “Everybody has something they are good at with natural ability. We are all artists. If you are a writer, or good at making food, you are an artist. No one

in my family knew anything about carving so I had no support. I think Maori people are lucky as they often have the cultural opportunity to learn. “Wood and bone carving is heartful and positive to me with good presence, life giving and real, as opposed to unnatural materials.

“Art enriches us. You can argue we don’t need it but it helps identify another aspect of ourselves. It is the most valuable thing besides our genetics. “My plan is to create works for different regions with extinct, endangered or commonly seen birds. “

FAMILY ENCOURAGEMENT

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Tracy Gage-Brown spent many of her childhood weekends and holidays helping on her uncle and aunty’s farm near Taupo.

“M

y parents never owned a farm, but my uncle and aunty owned about 560 hectares running beef and sheep. I spent most of my younger years visiting their farm and learning from them,” says Tracy. “From a young age, I drove tractors and helped feed the stock. I progressed into the shearing sheds as a rousey, drenching and docking the lambs as well as breaking in horses. I would work on the weekends, school holidays and every night after school. I love the freedom on a farm. On cold days you just wrap up warm. “I now manage a farm for Landcorp. I started off as a stock manager and in 2016 and moved to the farm I am on. It was originally 700 hectares, and we

5

recently did a lot of waterway QE fencing and are down to about 600 hectares. My husband Jason is a qualified builder and fencer and works with me. “In a position I held earlier on a big station we had young people and others on the unemployment benefit come for work experience. I enjoy teaching young people and have had four people come to the station I am on now, and most have moved into higher positions. “Our policy is to spend a month with each young person and observe how they react to the animals because some people don’t have natural stock sense. We also figure out their capabilities and what they really want to do. “They learn to muster with dogs to a high standard, and once they are confident, I give them sole responsibility

Tracy Gage-Brown discovered her love of farming at a young age and has won several awards during her 30 years of farming experience

young dairy stock are finished on-farm, and Tracy also grazes 1,000 dairy cows and heifers in winter

for a block. We also encourage students to learn through Primary ITO to gain extra qualifications and they visit other farms to see how they do things as well. “I believe that if you see something in a young person, you give them more rope and responsibility to learn because they soak knowledge up like a sponge. I have been lucky enough that a lot of the young people I have employed have learned the attention to detail that I am well-known for. “They have contributed to my success by learning important aspects of pasture management, crop rotation and what to identify as far as ill-health goes in cattle. It is important they understand animal health because we need to treat and separate it from the herd when necessary to avoid it dying or

contaminating other stock. They may have infected ticks that could drop off and carry over to other cows. We move sick cattle to better paddocks with supplements to get their health up.” One student went to a deer breeding unit with sheep and beef, one went to cattle finishing and dairy support for a Maori trust farm and another took over a position Tracy held previously. The farm Tracy is now on is predominantly dairy support. “We did do a bull beef component but changed to young dairy stock and supplement because we grazed a lot of stock off our dairy farms and this helped bring the costs down. We finished around 700 bull beef, 600 steers and still finish 850 of each stock class of R1 and R2 dairy heifers. In the winter

we graze 1,000 dairy cows and heifers. I love the job and the lifestyle. It can get stressful and is not a nine to five job living behind a desk. On a cold day, you add another layer of clothing. I like seeing the performance we can get out of our animals. I love seeing a big Angus or bull finish to its top potential. “I introduced bees back on to this farm, and we plant grass species specifically for bees and the nitrogen uptake, and we have a small component of sheep. This is mainly for our dog training, and it keeps us in touch with sheep farming. I believe sheep are a good size to train dogs on. “When I started, there were no women stock managers. Females are now more valued on farms as they often have a lot of attention to detail and patience. A lot of managers on the forum pages on Facebook are willing to give you people wanting to learn a chance. “We have won awards including the South Island Silver Fern Farm Award for finishing. We won it and placed twice in the North Island as well, and our dairy heifers have won the regional competitions. “With 30 years’ experience in finishing beef/bull beef/dairy heifers I have farmed in the Waikato, Central North Island and the South Island West Coast. “I have qualifications in vet nursing and a diploma in agriculture and horticulture. I wish to help any person in the finishing/bull beef and dairy support industry. I believe the future of farming is positive. There is a lot of good stuff going on that people don’t see.”

Supporting Rural Support Trust

Wishbone Pet Food has partnered with Rural Support Trust to help New Zealand farmers through sales of their most recent product, especially formulated for working dogs. Wishbone Gold is the first New Zealand-made pet food using New Zealand ingredients for the country’s working dogs. The family-run company is donating $5 for every bag sold of Wishbone Gold, their newest pet food specially made for working dogs. Chairperson for the Rural Trust, Neil Bateup is thankful for Wishbone Gold’s support. “Rural Support is a not-for-profit organisation, so we are incredibly grateful for the support of Wishbone Gold. It is a great partnership — just like a farmer with his dogs. Funds raised from the sale of bags can be utilised across rural New Zealand to help make a difference,” said Mr Bateup. “Rural Trust is made up of farmers supporting farmers, and we are available right across the country. Having dog food like this is important because just

like we need to keep our teams fit, and look after our people, our dogs are also a big part of our team on-farm. “Deemed as the heart of New Zealand farms, working dogs make a huge contribution to a farmer’s success. They work in all weathers, running from 60 to 100 kilometres a day, often at the speed of 20 to 30 kilometres an hour, to guard and herd sheep and cattle.” To keep dogs’ hearts healthy, Wishbone Gold is formulated with taurine, an amino acid that aids in heart function. Each 20kg bag is made with 100 per cent free-range New Zealand beef and lamb for strong muscles and enriched with glucosamine for joint health. Working dogs will also benefit from the power of Wishbone Gold’s eight superfoods: mango, papaya, blueberries, cranberries, flaxseed, rosemary, basil

The 3038E runs a three-cylinder, common rail injected, turbo-charged Yanmar TNV diesel engine that offers a 37.1hp gross output.

Both of these engines produce lower emissions, use less fuel and offer reduced vibration and noise for more comfortable operation. Cruise control is standard on these machines. The two-speed hydrostatic drive transmission has twin touch pedals for forward and reverse, making the tractor a simple machine to drive. They certainly come in handy for loading operations where plenty of forward and reverse movements are required. Popular implements for both tractors include the 120R loader, a mid-mount mower and a 54-inch AutoConnect mower deck — also, slashers, rotary hoes and post hole borers.

The 1025R has a 13.2L/min hydraulic flow to the loader, allowing it to lift loads around 300kg. The 3038E has a more powerful 35.2L/min hydraulic flow enabling it to lift loads around 500kg. A rear and midPTO is engaged with a push of a button on both machines. Other attachments such as a backhoe, front blade and rotary brooms are possible. Both tractors provide flexibility and ease of use with a foldable ROPS frame, colour-coded controls, easy lever switchable 2WD and 4WD and diff lock. The 1025R also features a tilting steering wheel.

Silver lining on wheels

by Andy Bryenton

The year 2020 may go down in history as one of the low points, alongside honourable mentions such as 1666 and 1918, but thanks to the relentless momentum and timescale of the auto industry, it was a good year for cars. Most new cars have a gestation spanning years of research, development and crash tests before they see the showroom. That’s why some models linger on with facelift after facelift until they can be wheeled right from the forecourt to a motor museum. A little something like a global viral outbreak did little to slow down the release of new models touting the latest technology. Neither did it slow down sales, which have been relatively buoyant in New Zealand. When it comes to the best of 2020, then, what was the top of the tree? It’s an offering from serial car of the year winners Mercedes Benz, that memorably pipped everyone else for the very first car of the year in 1886, by inventing the car before everyone else. This time, it’s their all-electric SUV, the EQC, which has beaten an admittedly much more challenging field to take top honours. The EQC, which is the subject of a current, somewhat confusing television ad campaign that also features the 1886 Benz-autowagen,

Mercedes EQC — the all-electric sports utility, which took out the top spot in New Zealand’s 2020 Car of the Year awards

is a huge departure for the company that created diesel and boasts several of the 20th century’s greatest cars and petrol engines in its gallery of hits. Contrast the EQC with the venerable, still-trendy G-Wagen, and you’ll find no

5.5-litre V8 fettled by the boys at AMG. The key words used by Mercedes about the EQC are ‘near-silent’, ‘practical’ and ‘refined’, as befits a smooth and gadget-laden flagship sports utility for the urban cruise rather than military manoeuvres. The price at the pump is totally negated, with two asynchronous electric motors replacing the traditional cylinders and pistons. The range is a handy 354 kilometres according to the United State’s EPA rating, though this traditionally grades lower than Kiwi

road tests. That puts the EQC out of the shadow of range anxiety for most local users. Even the $142,900 price tag seems reasonable when weighed against the other heavy hitters of the Mercedes range. With the world going electric, the stylishly appointed Benz was a clever choice for the car of the year. Still, most motorists will be focussed on what derives from its technology, as we collectively wait for EVs to rival oldfashioned internal combustion on initial investment cost.

Encouraging youth careers

The importance of primary industries has been recognised with a new sector to be included in the 2021 Ford Ranger New Zealand Rural Games to help young people into rural careers. The Rural Games will now include Westpac Agri Futures in association with Property Brokers. This is to be held on Friday, March 12 in Palmerston North. “Agri Futures is all about encouraging the next generation into agriculture sector careers,” said Westpac New Zealand general manager Institutional and Business Banking, Simon Power. “The demand for staff across rural New Zealand has only grown since Covid-19, and Westpac understands the need to support efforts to encourage more Kiwis to enter the rural workforce. “There is a wide breadth of career opportunities available right now. From dairy, horticulture, fencing, shepherding and shearing, through to arboriculture, apiculture, finance, science and increasingly Agri-tech, which is particularly strong in the Manawatu.” Property Brokers chairman Tim Mordaunt said the rural economy is more buoyant now than it has been in decades. “For those wanting to experience the ultimate Kiwi outdoor lifestyle, a career in the rural sector is unbeatable.” New Zealand Rural Games Trust chair, Margaret Kouvelis MNZM, said Westpac Agri Futures would have a heavy focus on industry bodies and those institutions that specialise in preparing youth for rural careers. “In recent decades there has been a strong focus on careers in cities, and this has been to the detriment of rural New Zealand. It is time we brought some balance to the conversation, so young people

understand the well-paid opportunities that are there right now.” Westpac Agri Futures will run from 9am to 1pm on March 12 2021 in The Square, Palmerston North. The event runs alongside the Allflex Clash of the Colleges in association with Inspire Net and Talent Central. Teams from 15 secondary schools across the mid and lower North Island compete in rural tasks to take home bragging rights in the juniors’ and seniors’ sections. Alongside that is the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Ladies and Rookie Championships and the Rural Golf

Polaris and Zero join forces

15

by Andy Bryenton

Polaris, makers of the popular Ranger, RZR, General and Sportsman off-road vehicles, has partnered up with electric powertrain innovators Zero Motorcycles, adding an injection of Silicon Valley technology to its business model. Polaris says that this 10-year partnership in off-road vehicles and snowmobiles is a cornerstone component of ‘rEV’d up’, its long-term strategy to position the company as the leader in off-road electric vehicles. While Tesla, the big name in on-road electric cars, is flying high with wild stock prices and rumours that they may buy out one of the big four automakers entirely, Polaris seems to be on track to replicate this feat for the world of off-roaders. “Thanks to advancements in power, pricing and performance over the last several years, and with customer interest surging, now is the right time for Polaris, with Zero Motorcycles as a key strategic partner, to aggressively accelerate our position in the development of off-road electric vehicles,” said Scott Wine, chairman and CEO of Polaris. Wine is not fooling around; models developed jointly by the two firms will see the light of day by the end of this year, and an EV version of every Polaris product, from the Baja desert-beating RZR to the snow, by 2025. “Zero Motorcycles’ mastery of the electric powertrain for powersports is unmatched in the market. We believe this transformative partnership will enable us to leapfrog technological hurdles around range and cost while providing a tremendous speed-tomarket advantage. Leveraging the strengths of our teams, Polaris and Zero will collaborate to shape the future of powersports.”

Polaris and Zero Motorcycles have joined forces to storm the off-road world, promising exciting new electric vehicles on sand, dirt, mud and snow

Zero Motorcycles CEO Sam Paschel is equally enthusiastic about combining his firm’s tech know-how with the manufacturing might of Polaris and its global reach. With Polaris’ scale and broad product line-up, this strategic partnership will be the largest in Zero

1

Motorcycles’ history. Under this 10year exclusive agreement, Polaris will develop, manufacture and sell electrified ORVs and snowmobiles using Zero’s powertrain technology, hardware and software. From the local perspective Alan Collins, Polaris managing director

Australia and New Zealand, said: “This news is very exciting for our part of the world. “Our sales of the Ranger EV have grown year-on-year substantially proving the desire from our customers for this type of product.”
