“One of the key commitments of the Dairy Tomorrow strategy is to ‘protect and nurture the environment for future generations’,” says DairyNZ geneticist, Mark Camara. “A team of researchers is making good on that commitment by investigating the role of genetics in reducing nitrogen (N) in cows’ urine. The research involves thousands of cows on farms around New Zealand and scientists are developing breeding strategies and estimating the expected reduction in N leaching — potentially up to 20 per cent. “If we can breed dairy cows that excrete less N in their urine, we can reduce the amount of N reaching our waterways. That’s good for farming and good for our environment. “Previous research has shown that, in dairy cows fed N-rich diets, milk urea levels and urinary N rise together, but this environmental correlation doesn’t necessarily mean that cows with genetically-low milk urea that are fed the same diet as typical cows will have low urinary N.” If this ‘genetic correlation’ doesn’t hold up, selecting for low milk urea won’t reduce urinary N. “We don’t know if reducing urinary N would compromise other breeding worth traits through other, unfavourable, genetic correlations or improve them through favourable ones.” Verifying these genetic relationships isn’t easy. It takes many measurements of urinary N, milk urea and other BW

traits on related cows to separate the environmental and genetic contributions to these relationships. To take these measurements a hightech gadget developed by AgResearch is attached to free-ranging cows. It channels urine past a sensor and records the time, volume, and nitrogen concentration of every urination. Pairing direct urinary nitrogen data with indirect measurements such as milk urea and applying complex statistical models can then estimate the genetic correlation between milk urea and urinary nitrogen. “If it’s high enough, we can use milk urea as a predictor trait. If it’s not, we’ll have to find another way.”

Deer velvet looking good
3
Long-term prospects for New Zealand velvet in the major Asian markets are looking positive with an explosion in demand for consumer-ready velvet-based products in Korea. “Ten years ago this product category didn’t even exist,” says Deer Industry NZ Asia manager, Rhys Griffiths. “In the past six months, 23 new velvet-based healthy food products have been launched in Korea — the majority of them using New Zealand velvet. “Yuhan Pharmaceuticals, which signed a memorandum of understanding with DINZ last year, is now a major player in this market. Their impressive New Origin concept store/cafe in Seoul features recently launched products that contain New Zealand velvet and deer farm imagery on large video screens inside.” Mr Griffiths says the Chinese market for velvet has yet to make the leap into consumer-ready healthy food products, but many manufacturers are aware of what has happened in Korea and believe it can be repeated in China. “The main barrier is a lack of confidence in the path to market for consumer products based on New Zealand velvet. These products cost millions of dollars to develop and market, so manufacturers need to be convinced they are not infringing a rule or regulation along the way.” To provide confidence to potential customers, DINZ is working with some exporters and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise to commission a report by a respected Chinese regulatory expert on

the pathway to market. This report will be provided to key manufacturers when it has been completed. “In the last three years to improve consumer safety, there has been a major tightening of the rules and regulations governing food and traditional medicines in China. This has included tighter standards for overseas suppliers. As a result, New Zealand velvet producers have had to create clean areas in their deer sheds and to meet tougher cold chain requirements. In China, velvet processors have had to make similar upgrades — some have built completely new factories.” A major new Chinese super ministry is being established that is expected to have regulatory oversight of the trade in traditional medicines and manufactured health foods. Until the new regulatory regime is operating, manufacturers will be uncertain about the rules that will apply to their operations. “A further unsettling factor has been the recent clamp down on importers for importing illegal products and for evading customs duties. Some smaller velvet importers have been prosecuted,” he says. “Larger, reputable importers say this will be a good thing in the longrun for the reputation of imported velvet and particularly for New Zealand. It will tidy up the industry.”

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES
BY ANN VAN ENGELEN
Xanthea Nichols grew up on her family’s farm near Dargaville, Northland and as part of her Taratahi training programme experienced farming in Wairarapa.
“M
y father Shawn’s encouragement and positive farming attitude helped me decide I wanted to continue in his footsteps,” said Xanthea. As a second-year student at Taratahi Training Centre, she worked on a 500ha sheep and beef finishing farm and has received three scholarships for her studies. Xanthea is now working on Matapihi farm, a 673ha property running sheep, beef and dairy through Taratahi. “We have 60ha cropping and regrassing, and this farm has been in the family for more than 100 years. It is a breeding and finishing farm, and the family have been slowly making the farm more intense over the years.
“I am loving it here working alongside the manager and owner. At home, my dad runs dairy grazers and does cropping on our 1,000 acre property. The farm has diversified over the years and included running sheep and bulls,” says Xanthea. Shawn also attended Taratahi when he was 16 years old, along with his friend Ronald. “When I was young, I would go out on the farm with dad and loved seeing him work the dogs and stock. When I was older and visiting Ronald in Ohakune, he told me to move a mob of sheep. I didn’t know what I was doing but succeeded, and decided I wanted to be a shepherd. “I did a Taratahi Taster Course and loved it. Last year I completed my level

PINUS RADIATA
Wanting to rear, more productive healthier calves? Radiata pine is our most popular plantation species. With good reason. It grows faster in New Zealand than in its native California. Some forests have been harvested five times and are growing better than ever. As the world supply of tropical hardwood diminishes, there is exciting potential to use and export pine timber for outdoor construction. Treatments, such as acetylation or heating, make pine much more durable and hard. Our plantation pines are also excellent at capturing atmospheric carbon. A mature pine captures nearly three times as much carbon as an indigenous tree twice its age. LOVE OUR FORESTS

three and am studying level four drystock breeding — it has been an awesome experience. “I have learnt an incredible amount about the theory side of farming. My favourite thing is working the dogs, and I am breaking in a huntaway, and I have attended Anna Holland’s training courses. Anna has a brilliant training regime, and Lloyd Smith from the South Island is really good, and helps with dog trialling and has great bloodlines. I also have a heading dog and will get another huntaway in a few months.” Xanthea also entered in the Golden Shears event for the experience. “I learnt to shear through Taratahi, and in the future, I want to have time working in a shearing gang as part of gaining more knowledge and progressing through the industry. “The difference between Dargaville and the Wairarapa region is huge. It is a lot colder down south, but the other farmers in the area were really helpful and would check I was ok or if I needed any help. The district is a good place for training because there are many opportunities, especially as there are more sheep in this area. “The area has good soil, and we planted ryegrass and had a lot of plantain. In summer it does get dry and hot but the animals adapt, and there is a lot of shelter in the paddocks and plentiful water supply.”
Last year for her level four Xanthea received a $2,000 Westpac Scholarship, Jeff Farms $6,000 scholarship and recently a $4,000 Salvation Army scholarship. “My mum is also very supportive and proud of what I have accomplished. It certainly pays to apply for funding as it helps tremendously with costs. After this year I would like to gain large station experience and do my level five diploma. Ultimately I want to become a stock manager and pass my knowledge on to others. I would love to see more females in the industry, I thought it was going to be difficult to get a job, but employers are really encouraging. In the future, I would like to drive tractors in Canada or Scotland for experience and will probably return home eventually and take over my dad’s business and let him do what he wants. “You can go far in the industry working with the right people. “I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for my dad’s encouragement. I have drawn from his experience many times, and he has been a huge support and taught me the basics that gave me a good knowledge base. “He is intrigued by what I am discovering, and I am now passing new knowledge on to him in return for the years he has invested in me.”

Budou-Senshin grape experts ‘Grape-master’ Tetsuya Higuchi from Yamanashi Japan is a third-generation specialist table grape grower, growing grapes here in New Zealand through the ‘Budou’ grape project. by Ann van Engelen
“A
fter study in Japan I worked different jobs, but decided to follow in my family’s footsteps growing table grapes. My father insisted I didn’t have to, but I wanted to continue the family success,” says Tetsuya. “I enhanced our system to supply the high end market. Within a few years we had great success in the Japanese fruit parlours. One bunch would weigh 700g selling at retail for NZ$70-$160.” Tetsuya came to the Southern Hemisphere, looking to fill a gap in the market after growing in Japan for more than 20 years. “Budou means grape — like the word Nashi means pear and Sika means deer in Japanese. Our focus is introducing the industry here producing a very high quality product, it takes three years from planting a new
vine before you can start harvesting quality grapes.” he says. Tetsuya still has his business in Japan producing approximately 16 different varieties. “The grapes come in all different types, shapes and colours. We grow them differently to most people in New Zealand, I planted my first grapes in Hawke’s Bay four years ago.” Tetsuya came to the region because he felt it was the right place to be successful. “I ‘could feel it in the air’ when I visited. The soil condition and climate is perfect and Hawke’s Bay is one of the best wine grape areas in the country; because it is hot in the day and cool at night — this combination produces beautiful fruit,” he says. “I found a local table grape grower and leased part of his property. purchased young plants of the Japanese ‘Kyoho’ grape from a nursery here and started our ‘Budou’ project. “We had to wait to see if they would be successful and over three years we expanded and leased more land from him.” Tetsuya then changed it from the traditional trellis style to a pergola system. Growing on a pergola allows the leaves maximum sun providing goodness to the grapes. “We put special paper bags on each bunch and use umbrellas to protect them from the different weather trends, bugs and excess sprays. These also stop the birds landing on them — they love the colours and eat the whole lot if they can — we must be growing some nice tasty grapes.” In Japan the family grow some varieties, which can grow to golf ball size. “We are still researching which fertilisers are suitable in New Zealand to help the growth. Success is also about irrigation, pruning and branch placement. Thinning the grapes will help make a bigger fruit. For Kyoho, one bunch can be 400 grams with each grape growing to 12-13 grams.” Some grapes get trapped inside the bunch and aren’t as flavoursome and thinning helps rectify this. “We also produce seedless grapes by using a method to make the plant think that the seed has already been produced. We are successfully selling at the local farmers’ market and Farro Fresh in Auckland, as well as few local stores.” Each bunch is presented in a special individual bag, because in Japan, some
food is treated as a seasonal gift that you present to someone special. “For thousands of years Asian cultures have shown people they are important and appreciated by sending gifts of fruit. If you are going to give a gift it must be excellent, like our grapes,” says Tetsuya. “At times, we have two to three varieties and each has a different flavour and smell. For example, New York Muscat has red small sweet berries, White Diamond is aromatic, and Buffalo is black with an intense rich flavour and tangy dry skin. “I am looking at introducing more Japanese varieties and plan to get others exclusively grown by us as there is potential for ‘Budou’ grapes with export opportunities to Japan and other Asian countries. Less than one per cent of grape growers in New Zealand are producing table grapes — most are growing wine grapes. Company administrator, Yumeri Katsura, met Tetsuya through a mutual friend and now works full-time for Budou-Senshin Ltd. “I am also from Japan, but have lived in New Zealand for 20 years. I have a horticultural background and now help to manage the company here,” she says. Tetsuya spends half of the year in Hawkes Bay, whilst his wife and son manage the business in Japan. “We are looking for potential growers to embrace our wonderful project and create a new industry right here in New Zealand. “Others have tried to produce the seedless grapes, but few have succeeded.
Budou grapes come in all different types, shapes and colours are growing well in Hawke’s Bay
“Success depends on the variety, climate and weather. “Being seedless means the grape itself gets bigger, as all the growth goes
into the flesh not the seed. Ours are 99.9 per cent seedless — Tetsuya says if you find one with seeds you are the ‘lucky’ one.”

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES
NEW LEASE OF LIFE by Denise Gunn
When a 12-year-old heading dog named Tod arrived at Tararua Vets in Pahiatua for his final visit, he gave vet nurse Natalie Smith a look like he wasn’t ready to go. Natalie called his owners and arranged a retirement home for Tod. Six years later, Natalie has rehomed retired working dogs all over the country through Retired Working Dogs (RWD) NZ.
“W
e help farmers find retirement homes for their dogs after all those years of hard work,” said Natalie. “We also rehome the young ‘failed’ dogs; those who are a bit soft for the job, and we get quite a few working breed pet dogs through as well.” Farmers contact RWD through the organisation’s Facebook page facebook. com/Retired.WorkingDogs or website retiredworkingdogs.org.nz. The dogs that can stay on-farm until they have found a new home are then advertised on behalf of the farmers. Remar Knitwear & Adage Socks
Natalie says it’s then up to the farmer to decide where the dog will go. “Sometimes we have dogs that need to be off-farm for whatever reason, and so we take them into foster care.” The dogs are desexed, vaccinated and socialised before advertising begins. Dogs are also often referred to RWD through veterinary clinics. These dogs tend to have sustained careerending injuries. “We take these dogs into foster and have the surgeries done, and then rehome them.” Pounds, the SPCA and other rescue agencies refer dogs too.
THE SHORT DROP LIMITED
Phil Cox and his wife Karen foster dogs on their Wairarapa property to give them a second chance when they come off a farm
“People also contact us looking for dogs, so we advertise for them as well.” Dogs have been taken in from Northland to Otago. All potential new owners are met and their properties inspected. Dogs go out on trial and if it doesn’t work out, they are returned to RWD. A team of fosterers, located from Martinborough to Ohakune, play a critical role behind the scenes to help the dogs. “Fosterers are so important,” said Natalie.
“They take the dogs in and teach them how to be pets. As most of the dogs have never been inside previously, they need to learn about cats, children and sleeping inside. The fosterers take the dogs to vet appointments and to meet prospective, new owners. Natalie said one of the fosterers is a sheep and beef farmer. “This is brilliant because when we get dogs from the pound, they go up there so we can learn whether they want to go to a working home or a pet home.”

Philip Cox has been fostering working dogs for the past six years. He and his wife Karen live in rural Wairarapa, surrounded by farmland, river and hills. Philip said they foster dogs to give them a second chance after coming off the farm. When a dog arrives on the property, the couple tries to establish a routine around sleeping and feeding. “It’s important that it has a safe space and it isn’t threatened. Once you see their confidence increase, you can move forward with walks and socialising.” Philip says involvement with RWD has taught them much about dogs and people. “When you see the way some dogs have been treated, your heart goes out to them, and it’s so important to give them a safe place.” Manawatu-based Vicki Lim has had a soft spot for working dogs after meeting them in her capacity as a veterinary student. She has since fostered eight dogs. “They’re intelligent and affectionate and are able to match your lifestyle really well,” she said. “They tend to be very well-behaved and willing to please, which makes them really trainable. We’re extremely proud to be able to give these awesome dogs a loving home after years of hard work. “Doing this, we prevent the dogs from getting put down, and allow people to have some amazing companions for the rest of their days.” Natalie also fosters dogs and helps coordinate the foster network, assists with decision-making, and does some administration work for RWD. “There’s a whole team of people working behind the scenes on the day-today running and fundraising,” she said. “There’s a lot of transport involved too. Either we transport them, or they’re collected. Sometimes we’ll put a post up if it’s a long way and there are fantastic people out there who will offer to deliver dogs on their way somewhere.” Natalie works as a farm rep for Royal Canin, travelling all over the North Island allowing her to pick up and drop off dogs

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers
After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.
To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here
Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz
was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.
Inversion helps to:
Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.
• Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability
“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”
Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young
IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS
Discs:
It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.
Posture: Poor
posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.
De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when difference muscles are stressed they become tight machine is that the body is constantly which restricts the flow of blood and lymph repairing itself, however if the wear and through the muscles so toxins build up, tear on the body is greater than the body’s to repair itself, it is a slow decline. BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,
Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

Bringing effluent into line Effluent storage on nineteen per cent of Waikato farms is classed as grossly undersized, and Waikato regional councillors have backed a plan aimed at bringing them in line. “It’s the old 80/20 rule. Over 80 per cent of farmers are investing in infrastructure to protect the environment — they’re doing the right thing. But their efforts, and the reputation of the dairy industry is being threatened by a minority of farms.” says council chair, Alan Livingston. “Regional council staff will be adopting a more risk-based monitoring programme, combining one-on-one site visits of high-risk farms with aerial inspections, which could include using satellite imagery, drones, fixed wing aircraft or helicopters.” Aerial operations will be carried out in a way that prevents animal disturbance and interference with normal farm operations. “We have some of the most accurate information we have ever had. Nineteen per cent of Waikato farms have less than seven days’ storage based on two milkings per day, and in many cases, they have a lot less. This means that a short spell of wet weather would make illegal discharges of dairy effluent likely,” said farming services manager, Nicole Botherway. “We have asked 432 of Waikato’s high-risk farms for plans to upgrade their storage, and in four years just 76 have done this. At this rate of change on-farm, it would take 27 years for them all to comply. “Their deliberate behaviour is not acceptable, so there needs to be an increased risk of getting caught breaching the Resource Management Act for them to change their behaviour and priorities.” Council regulatory staff have primarily been carrying out announced visits to farms, and aerial surveillance for compliance monitoring was stopped. “We are at a place where a significant portion of the farming population have or

are attempting to improve their systems and working with them one-on-one has helped,” said resource use director, Chris McLay. “The way we currently do inspections cannot reliably detect non-compliance with the rules by those who have shown no attempt to improve their infrastructure, and there are some farmers who will not comply without us using other tools at our discretion. We have come to a point where we rely on the public or neighbours to make us aware of serious non-compliance occurring.” Over the past four years central government, auditors and other regional councils had queried Waikato’s decision to reduce its regulatory monitoring tools and expressed concern about the impact of this decision on compliance. Councillors agreed there was a need to speed up compliance and provide staff with more tools to achieve this. The Waikato Regional Plan Rules relating to dairy effluent can be found at waikatoregion.govt.nz/farmeffluent-rules.

Last edition we saw that osteoarthritis (OA) is mostly caused by the loss of cartilage secreting cells called chondrocytes. Their job is to maintain cartilage. If chondrocytes are damaged or die, they are unable to repair cartilage. The result is that cartilage starts to break down. Eventually, whole patches of cartilage are lost causing a bone-onbone scenario. While cartilage has no nerves, bone certainly does! While bone-onbone causes pain, much of the pain comes from misdirected inflammation. White blood cells that patrol the joint capsule respond to cartilage loss by bringing in extra fluid and a cocktail of inflammatory chemicals in a vain attempt to repair the cartilage. The result is pain, stiffness and in some cases visible swelling. My approach is firstly to adopt a nutrient-dense anti-inflammatory diet. This is high in antioxidants, omega-3 and other foods that reduce inflammation. We then add four compounds from supplements. The first is omega-3 fish oil usually between 4,000 and 6,000mg daily.
We then add high-grade chondroitin sulphate at 800-1,600mg. Chondroitin sulphate (CS) is the most important joint supplement. CS is an actual component of cartilage and adding this helps chondrocytes to work properly. The problem is that most joint supplements only contain around 250mg of CS. In most cases, I start clients on 1,600mg. We then add the same amount of glucosamine and a potent 95% curcumin extract from turmeric. As an example, I have one client with OA in his knees. This was bad enough to significantly impact mobility. After three months on a personalised programme, he is now able to exercise again. His partner had OA in her thumbs and shoulders and is much better. Feel free to contact me for personalised advice. Rural Building/sheds & shelters Good homes make good tenants by Jill Dickie
If chickens are happy, warm, and feeling secure they’ll repay with enough eggs from each hen to keep you in cooked breakfasts, pavlovas and baked cakes for months!
100 IT’S NOT A TARGET
49:22 PM
Chickens like to have a regular, quality food supply, and also enjoy good draught-free shelter, out of the rain and hot sun. If they are free-range, the shelter you provide can be something as simple as a hay shed, implement shed, or a treeline, as long as they have somewhere to lay those precious eggs for you. It is possible to partially free-range your hens by letting them out for the afternoon after they have ‘done their duty’, bringing them back into their house at night, to safety from predators. The house should be secure from all weathers, and provide next boxes as well as poles to roost on at night. If letting them out isn’t an option, your hen house can provide similar accommodation, and a connected run gives them a place to scratch and pick at the ground as chickens like do. A run can be as elaborate as a netting compound complete with a roof to keep wild birds or cats out, or as simple as some sticks of timber nailed together,

covered with chicken wire and windbreak cloth. Another option, smaller again, is a mobile hen house. Built on skids or wheels, you can shut the hens in then drag or tow it to a nearby site, allowing them the freedom of fresh grass as they need it. It saves the effort of providing greens each day, gives the soil time to rejuvenate, and the hens can fertilise the ground as well. When a smaller number of chickens are being kept, accommodation is easily achievable with various coops available on the market, or easily build your own with timber and netting, as long as they have a dry and secluded spot for egg laying. Other options, if you’re not so handy on the tools, is to recycle other items into what you need. A waterproof ute canopy, for example, is just about high enough for the chooks
to pop under to shelter from the rain. Gathering some of those plastic drums, securing together, and cutting chickensized doorways in the fronts; converting an unused dog kennel or garden shed; even an unusable plastic water tank with a door for you and a door for them cut into the side! All it takes is a little imagination, and you’ll have eggs-axctly what keeps everyone happy!

Shelters for all by Ann van Engelen
Made from pine, cedar, iron, mixed cladding, plastic, heavy duty fabric or speciality wood, a shelter can be traditional or uniquely designed to suit your personality and requirements. Animal shelters, garden and wood sheds, carports, barns and feed storage are just a few scenarios of smaller sized buildings that may be required on your property, whether it be a farm, lifestyle block or family home acreage. There is a range of baby barns that offer more headroom and wall space than traditional baby barns and can be lined or unlined, with a range of colours, size, door and window options. The small buildings are ideal for bunkhouses, animal shelters and hen houses — the uses are limitless, and the designs take up minimal space on any property. For all your shed, shelter, carports, spare room, art studio or office needs, check out designs available from various local companies or discuss the
design you may have in mind with them, often producing the product of your requirements is easier than you think. Looking after animals is a priority and ensuring they have good shelter is a must for their health and safety both in cold weather and the heat of summer. Ensuring chickens, donkeys, goats and other animals have housing is simple, and many are now designed to be easily moved and relocated allowing fresh food and minimal pasture damage. Feed pads shelter groups of animals from wind, rain and sun and keep the feed in good condition and save wastage. Calves need a clean, well-ventilated, well-lit shelter to give them a head-start in life and providing the best possible environment for raising calves can

Farm sheds come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are made from various materials. They are required for many different reasons so whether it be to house animals, farm equipment, feed or general storage — a shed needs to be a solid, safe structure and easily accessible. They can be made from various types of cladding including timber, Colorsteel or iron and can be fully or semi-enclosed, and have open or closed bays depending on each situation. Roller, hinged or sliding doors are also options on many builds. Barns, milking sheds, feed pad covers and machinery sheds are all available through various building companies and suppliers. Rotary and herringbone milking sheds can often be designed for individual requirements including bay spacings to suit. Feed pad covers for all stock including cattle, goats and sheep help save on feed keeping it clean and animals off wet paddocks during winter saving pugging of the land and provide shade in the hot months. Shelters are a solution for many circumstances and can be made as large or small as you need. When on a lifestyle block, ensure you have the right space and position for the building you choose. Fox Cabins specialises in small custombuilt spaces that are architecturally designed and built to the New Zealand Building Code. “Just because the cabins are small does not mean that there should be any scrimping on the materials or construction methods,” says director, Adam Fox. “Every Fox cabin is built to the exact same standard as a normal house — that means brand new, double-glazed doors and windows, full strength treated timber framing and the entire envelope insulated to the Zone 3 (Alpine Zone) requirements.” The company has its home just off Gallagher Drive, where all the buildings are constructed indoors. Kitset shelters a good fit
by Jill Dickie
Grazing stock in paddocks will often find shelter by huddling together, ducking for cover under or behind a treeline, or hide in a valley, but for other animals such as donkeys, horses or goats a small shelter needs to be provided. There are many options and sizes available in kitset form, and several New Zealand companies provide information on their wares. The kitset option provides a shelter as a flat pack unit with all parts included, and all you need to do is put it together in an afternoon, preferably in the position you need to use it! Depending on the size and the animals the shelter is for,
you may choose to build it on skids to enable towing to a new patch of grass. If building isn’t your thing, or time isn’t on your side, you can hire a local builder to install it, although a certain amount of negotiation may be required regarding price and time availability! You can also have a shelter constructed by the retail company and delivered complete, and lifted into position ready-for-use.

Many lifestyle block owners prefer this method as it is an instant answer to an immediate problem if bad weather is forecast. The beauty of having the ability to gather together a hammer and nails to construct the shelter yourself is that you can personalise it to incorporate a small yard if required, such as a dry area for stabling horses or donkeys. In this case, you may even like to add a cover over the yard to create a dry, stable type of area for farrier work, veterinary care or safe feeding.
In the case of goat shelters, you may need a small yard with a milking area or even a raised platform to save your back when hoof trimming. Your shelter building may also be used for feed storage, a small amount of hay, or have a tack shed added onto it. Before purchasing it is advisable to have a solid plan around your requirements, then research the plans readily available from retailers — a much quicker option than drafting something yourself or ‘making it up as you go’.

Increasing NAIT awareness Joint Ministry for Primary Industries and NAIT Ltd compliance operations have a greater understanding amongst farmers of the National Animal Identification and Tracing scheme, but some are continuing to break the rules. Manager of compliance investigations, Gary Orr, says MPI and NAIT Ltd have been running joint operations around the country to check compliance with NAIT requirements. “We are pleased to see knowledge of the NAIT scheme has increased in

the wake of the Mycoplasma bovis response; however, some farmers are still ignoring their legal obligations,” says Mr Orr. “The Mycoplasma bovis response has highlighted the importance of tracing animal movements and having complete and accurate information available. It is critical all farmers comply with NAIT and track all animal movements on and off their farms. Those that aren’t are putting the rest of the industry in jeopardy.” Mr Orr says MPI and NAIT Ltd are increasing their focus on compliance with NAIT requirements. “Both organisations have significantly stepped up their efforts to detect instances where animal movements have taken place without being recorded in the NAIT database. Since the start of the year, MPI has undertaken around 200 NAIT compliance checks on farms and saleyards where cattle or deer are present.” In addition, MPI has conducted 19 proactive compliance operations across the country, including during the moving period and Operation Cook Strait in March. “As a result of these operations, we have issued a number infringement

notices and written warnings. We are conducting further enquiries on stock movements and currently have eight active investigations underway. These may result in further infringement notices being issued.” Mr Orr says NAIT Ltd has begun an analysis of NAIT data to identify those farmers who continue to offend. “Any farmers who have breached the
requirements of the act will be sent a warning letter by NAIT Ltd. If they do not meet their legal requirements within 30 days, they will be referred to MPI for further enquiries.” Operations continue at various locations throughout the country through random inspections at key livestock depots, transit points and livestock exchange or saleyard points.

LIVESTOCK ADVERTORIAL
A premium product Reharvest Timber Products Ltd manufacture premium wood chip and mulch products from waste wood that are eco-friendly and safe for children, animals and nature alike — leading the market in this area for 20 years. They also offer revegetation mulch, playground Cushionfall, equestrian Cushionride and coloured garden Enviromulch. “Cushionride is our wood chip product for your equestrian arenas. The special load-bearing wood chip allows horses to travel over the surface, rather than through it, minimising joint damage and causing less trauma to your horse’s hocks, knees and lower legs, consequently meaning less downtime when competing,” says Reharvest CEO, Ted Edwards. Cushionride is made to a high technical specification for all-weather conditions and all-year round performance. It aids in drainage, so it doesn’t freeze and puddles aren’t an issue. It is dust and stone free. Overall, a more comfortable and secure ride for the horse and rider. Cushionride is ideal for all equestrian disciplines including dressage, show jumping, trotting, racing, polo and the perfect choice for horse riding arenas, gallops, horse walkers and breeding sheds. There is the added bonus that their products are eco-friendly and easy to install.

Small car for big adventures by Andy Bryenton
When Ford announced, in the not too distant past, that they would soon deliver a tiny sports utility out of India, the world was perhaps not quite ready for just how global the blue oval brand had become. Never mind that luxury marque Jaguar — also once owned by Ford — now comes from the factories of the economically booming subcontinent. The EcoSport surpassed expectations, carving out a niche in the category it was intended for — hip, young trendy adventure seekers with urban parking space anxieties but the need for a cruiser, which can go anywhere. It also garnered a massive following with another key demographic, who enjoyed the economy, high seating position and ease of ingress and egress the small sporty machine offered. These were the over-65s, and across the market, this slice of the population have become big customers for ‘crossover’ SUVs in general. The cool, frugal EcoSport ticked all their boxes, from easy to use infotainment through to superb safety. Now there’s a new look for the 2018 EcoSport, making the peppy little Ford firecracker seem more eager than ever to get to grips with both urban and rural roads. Retained — for now — is another cute feature, which throws a salute to the huge off-roaders of yesteryear — that back-door-stowed spare tyre. It may disappear in the near future. Beyond looks, there’s that gem of an engine under the hood to write

home about. Ford’s one-litre masterpiece scooped engine of the year honours in 2017, and it’s pure witchcraft how so much power can be wrung from the tiny turbo mill. In fact, this engine has won top gong as the world’s best no less than six times. Delivering 92kW and 170Nm of torque to propel the tiny EcoSport, the engine is mated to a six-speed transmission and cooled by a special shutter system, which opens the grille for more cool air under load, and snaps shut for better aero effects when the going isn’t so tough. So, an award-winning engine, a comfy, safe cabin with everything just to hand, enough space for five adults and their gear. Sounds like a nice recipe. Even nicer is the price Ford has been able to offer thanks to their global design and manufacturing power. The 2018 EcoSport is an absolute bargain considering its credentials,

In for the long haul by Andy Bryenton
It’s hard to imagine a time before the white van tradesman’s office, mobile workshop, rolling tool chest and classroom for generations of apprentices, not to mention the weapon of choice for couriers facing the urban maze. There’s a classic recipe for a proper hard-working van, and it’s safe to say that relative newcomers to the scene LDV have hit the right combination of power and practicality to impress their target audience. When looking for a van to turn into a working partner, three things stand out — reliability, ease of use and comfort. The LDV G10 Cargo

Van neatly ticks those boxes and then adds a bit more to more than justify its very tidy price. Those looking to balance the budget and still recruit a willing workhorse that will last the distance are already paying attention to this new contender. Addressing both performance and stamina, the G10 comes with a choice of two power options, either a two litre turbocharged petrol engine delivering 165kw mated to a six-speed auto box or a two-litre naturally aspirated unit with fuel injection. Both deliver fuel economy figures in the mid-11 litres per 100km range, and both have been designed to be easy to service and hard to punish. When it comes to ease of use, LDV have listened to tradies and couriers, who want massive cargo space, wide-opening doors both to the rear and to the sides, and lots of options for carrying different sized and shaped loads. That means an unimpeded 2.4 x 1.278 x 1.270 metre cargo bay, along with modern luxuries such as reversing cameras to help line up
“GET THE EDGE WITH THE

Fleet force — the LDV G10 represents value for money for the working driver
with loading docks and tricky spaces. It’s in terms of comfort that the G10 moves streets ahead of the classic old van layout. Gone is the rattly old ‘church pew’ seating of ancient vans, replaced with a car-like layout and a full multimedia system. That sense of refinement comes through to the ride as

Youth scholarship opportunity

In their second year, applications are now open for Silver Fern Farms Plate to Pasture Youth Scholarships. The scholarships award six young people around New Zealand $5,000 to assist with developing their careers and capabilities in the red meat sector. “The response to last year’s inaugural scholarships indicate a bright future for the red meat sector,” says Silver Fern Farms chief executive, Simon Limmer. “Silver Fern Farms welcomes applications from the industry’s emerging talent who want to contribute to a sustainable future for our red meat sector — from plate to pasture. We are excited to continue to support young people who want a future in the red meat industry.” Mr Limmer says last year the winners delivered outstanding ideas on a vast range of industry issues, from biosecurity challenges, exploring ways to sustainably add value to farming businesses, as well as challenging the industry to think big and be bold, with consumers in mind. “We look forward to seeing the range of ideas and fresh perspectives in the applications again this year. The scholarships support our vision: Inspirational Food created by Passionate People. They are an important opportunity for us to support our emerging
leaders to contribute to our industry.” Scholarship applications are open to people wanting to develop their career in the food or red meat industry with interests in red meat, food production, agriculture, food marketing, marketing and sales, research and development, food processing, cooking and food technology. “Through the scholarship process, shareholders in Silver Fern Farms cooperative engage with the applicants who require a shareholder to support their bid for a scholarship,” says Silver Fern Farms co-operative chair, Rob Hewett. “Silver Fern Farms is proud to support the future of farming and the communities where we live and work, by helping to create these new relationships. Recognising and rewarding excellence in our community is important to the co-operative.” Applications close at 5pm Friday August 24 2018. Visit silverfernfarms.com for full details.
