Leading edge rivers’ protection work Work is being done to protect and restore Waikato and Waipa waterways from toxic bacteria, improve water clarity, reduce the buildup of algae and monitor nutrients. This work is being done as part of the Healthy Rivers: Plan for Change/Wai Ora: he Rautaki Whakapaipai project which aims to develop a regional plan change to improve the two rivers ecosystems, involving the Waikato Regional Council and five river iwi partners. The project’s multi-sector Collaborative Stakeholder Group has now decided on some of the attributes of freshwater that should be measured in the Waikato and Waipa river catchments under the plan change. Harmful bacteria such as E.coli, clarity and planktonic cyanobacteria will be measured and free floating algae such as phytoplankton will be targeted. In lakes and lake-fed rivers, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, nitrate and ammonia are proposed be measured and issues related to food gathering and fishing will be investigated at a workshop next month. The proposals will need to be endorsed by the Healthy Rivers Wai Ora committee and the regional council. The CSG is seeking public feedback on the plan and will provide a range of opportunities in September and October. “Everyone in the Waikato and

Waipa river catchments, and beyond, uses water in some way, and we want to hear from all of them,” CSG chair Bill Wasley said. “Feedback will help us to finalise the solution we’ll recommend to the Healthy Rivers Wai Ora committee by the end of this year.” Public feedback will be gathered by running online surveys, community workshops, ‘out and about’ days for different sectors and a larger workshop which will be held on October 13, at the Claudelands Conference and Exhibition Centre in Hamilton. sites to increase the chances of nesting success. To qualify for the competition, images must be snapped this year, within a 20 kilometre radius of Hamilton. The best overall image will win a nature book up to the value of $150, a one year family pass to Hamilton Zoo valued at $240 and the winning photo printed on canvas. The people’s choice award winner will win a book of images by award winning wildlife and nature photographer Trevor Penfold, as well as a New Zealand birds t-shirt. “Try and get up close with lots of detail of the bird rather than foliage in the photo’s, and they need to be high resolution, at least 1MB in size. If we can have more kereru and bellbirds that would be very helpful,” said Ms Balvert. Images of up to eight megabytes in size should be sent to halo@ waikatoregion.govt.nz by Monday 17 August. Contest terms and conditions are available at www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/ hamiltonhalo or at www.facebook.com/ hamiltonhalo.

The biennial Hamilton Halo photo competition is on again this year, with people invited to submit their best snap of a tui, kereru or bellbird. “We encourage people to give us their best shot to help raise awareness about protecting our precious native birds,” said Waikato Regional Council’s Halo project manager Therese Balvert. Native birds such as kereru, tui and bellbirds were once abundant in the area. Due to introduced pests such as rats and possums and the loss of habitat and food sources, many of the native birds are rarely seen in the city. Tui breed in native bush and native plants are a good source of food for them. Scientists believe they feed on the nectar of exotic species of trees that flower over winter and commute from up to 20km away, and return to their breeding sites outside the city. Bellbirds tend to nest fairly high up in trees, and prefer dense foliage for cover. They collect nectar, fruit and insects from a variety of native plants with insects being particularly important to females and chicks. The kereru is New Zealand’s only surviving native pigeon. They are longlived birds that breed very slowly, and are currently fighting for survival. They are the only birds left that are capable of swallowing fruit greater than 12 mm in diameter and dispersing the seed whole. This means the future of native trees is closely linked to the survival of our kereru. The Hamilton Halo project aims to bring native birds, such as tui and bellbirds, back into Hamilton city. The ‘Halo’ is a ring drawn around Hamilton, taking in key sites where tui breed. The project involves animal pest control at selected bird breeding

information and analysing it in the correct way to ensure that what we have discovered is not something that has occurred just by chance. The masters will be finished this year and I intend to go on to a PhD to develop further skills in the trial work area.” Emma believes in teaching farmers. “It’s better to use our knowledge to teach staff how to prevent disease rather than always treating unwell animals,” she said. “One of the key ways to prevent animal health problems is for farmers to base their decisions on the data that they have available, or by doing the necessary tests to make data available. “Informed decisions can then be made and money is less likely to be wasted on treatments that are not
initially wanted to be a small animal vet as I did not grow up on a farm. A large animal component was part of the degree, and I enjoyed it so much I decided to focus on large animal vet work,” said Emma. Emma is married with two young children and her husband is also a vet for the same company. She says it can be difficult having two vets in the family due to the working hours, and managing family time is important. It is a lifestyle that can be tricky, but no more trickier than for farmers. Working for two years and studying cattle and young stock nutrition, in 2012 she started her master’s degree, majoring in epidemiology. “The study is about setting up trials, gathering

Checking on the health of stock and any issues they may have in the early stages is very important needed, or animal health issues that have occurred because people were unaware there was a problem.” Emma says a good example of this is managing facial eczema in dairy cows. The trial work she has completed over the past three years has shown that 1/3 of farms out of the 105 farms sampled had cows with evidence of facial eczema damage. “Only 20 per cent of farms giving zinc for prevention were achieving levels that would protect the cows against eczema. This is information that can be easily gathered prior and during the facial eczema season to help manage the disease better.” One of the ways the practice she works in encourages decision
making with data is through a system called Infovet. “Our practice helped design and fund its development with Zoetis. It connects vets to farmer’s MindaPRO records and enables us to keep track of animal data such as mastitis incidence or reproductive performance.” It also allows them to see milk production data and somatic cell counts, enabling them to give better, more informed advice. Emma’s main advice for farmers is to keep good records and use the available tests to ensure what they are doing is working. “If farmers think they have a lameness problem in their herd, record lame cows over time and what lameness they have

so we can help create a prevention plan,” she says. “The same goes for facial eczema. Gather spore counts, take bloods, see if what plans are in place are working, rather than finding out that what you have been doing is not working when there is an outbreak or milk production suffers.” Emma is about to undertake a three year project on the effects of not enough or poor quality colostrum — failure of passive transfer in newborn calves. The study aims to determine how many calves have failure of passive transfer and how that affects their susceptibility to disease, their weight throughout their first two years, first pregnancy test results and first lactation performance.

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

a farm and was a land girl. Her husband Trevor works at the New Zealand Steel Mill and they have a daughter, Bridget who is 21-years-old and is at Waikato University studying for a bachelor of management studies majoring in agricultural studies. “It all started when Bridget was doing calf club and a friend said we should go to the Clevedon show, and so we did. Then we did another and another.” “When Gregory was three-and-a-halfyears-old he asked if he could enter his own calf. He led with me and on that first day he won a few categories including first for dairy type. “The judge can ask him anything about the calf he is showing and he can give all the details of the mother, father, breed, what it is fed, when it got pregnant, and when it is due. “He then goes into his knowledge on the Titanic, at times much to the judges surprise. “It takes him about a month to remember all the details needed for each calf.” He is a member of Holstein NZ, Aryshire NZ, Pure Bred NZ and Jersey NZ, and has entered the Malcom Hutchings Young Handler Class for the Northern district and came second overall in his age group two years in a row, and third in the young showmanship class at the Easter show. “Autism has it’s challenges and one day a judge commented “Gregory’s mind wasn’t on the job but the minute I asked him to do something and asked for information about the calf, Gregory

came through.” This is all part of autism, he at times also forgets to say hello to people who say hi, simply because he can’t think why he needs to reply. He doesn’t mean to be rude. “He is thrilled with each prize he receives, whether it be a ribbon, or $10, he is happy and the most joy comes from the animals he has bred,” said Michele. “The experience is good for him because he has to talk to the judges, and at times he finds it hard to talk and explain himself. I do ask other parents to excuse me if I need to jump in the ring and help him, but I must defend him at times and be there if he needs me, in the ring or not. “People ask to see him on the job at the shows. He leads cows and calves and they just stand there, he has a real knack and a way about him. When he
gets into the ring they do exactly what is needed. “People know him, and his achievements, and I am grateful to the support from others who have encouraged him and us along the way. He gets up at 5am Saturdays from October to April and goes to all the shows, he helps load the truck and stays up until 9pm when the jobs are all done. “If he only knows cows and farming in the future, that will be his job, he has something to fall back on. Autism does not mean he can’t be successful in life.” Sponsors have helped Gregory achieve his goals, with feed, boots, feeding bottles, hats, and a raft of other items which the family are grateful for.

er family lived on a small lifestyle block in her younger years and then she moved to town with her mum. “I didn’t have much to do with farming at all except having the odd pet lamb, but I was always interested in animals and got involved with the Future Beef NZ programme through school,” said Amy. “I first entered in 2008, and have entered the event every year since. Each year I come away from the competition having gained knowledge and new skills related to both the beef industry and agriculture in general.” Amy said after her first year of Future Beef she was hooked and for the next few years brought steers with past senior ambassador winner, Rowan Sandford. The steers they purchased were used for competing in the competitions and

they had broken and done all the work with themselves. After completing her high school education at Central Hawke’s Bay College, she began her tertiary education at Massey University in 2013 and was offered a place in the 2014 intake for vet school. She is now in her second year of the five-year degree. “In 2009, I received a phone call from Glen Anthony Simmentals stud master Tony Thompson asking if I would like to help him with his team of cattle at the Hawke’s Bay A and P Show,” said Amy. “Six years down the track and I am still working with the stud. When I am home from university I go to the farm as often as possible and call Tony to keep up to date when I am not there. “Tony is a real mentor teaching me
One of Amy’s responsibilities is feeding the cattle and she has worked with Glen Anthony Simmentals for six years gaining knowledge from stud master Tony Thompson

GREAT SPECIALS! Amy finds the Simmentals to be very well tempered cattle and enjoys working with them
Upon completion of her veterinary degree, Amy plans to work with farmers to improve stock genetics
about breeding, the cattle, and how the stud works. The simmentals are really well tempered cattle, and I have always found them easy to work with compared to others I have dealt with. “I take care of the feeding out mainly in the winter — we use balage. I move the breaks and complete different jobs like the drenching and treatment for ticks and other parasites. “Tony shows cattle and I help break in the calves each year. We have designed a method of tying and handling them three days in a row. Once they have quietened down we teach them to lead by walking them around the pen, or if they are bigger, we lead them by a tractor on a halter with
quick releases. “We take the biggest show team of cattle in New Zealand consisting of 20-25 stock and we often place in the top three.” Amy has a goal of establishing her own stud and says it is not something she wants to rush, ensuring she has both the time to be fully committed and has done her research so that she has a clear focus of what it is she wants to achieve in her breeding programme. “Once I have completed my veterinary degree I aim to work as a production animal vet and work alongside farmers to improve farm profitability through areas like genetics, nutrition and animal husbandry, rather than being ‘the ambulance at the bottom of the hill’. “The Future Beef Hoof and Hook event
Suppliers of state of the art grease and lubricants to agricultural, earthmoving and general contractors
will always hold special importance to me as it was my first real involvement in the beef industry. It has allowed me to gain confidence and winning this award is a huge honour. Not coming from an agricultural/ farming background highlights the ability that anyone can be successful in the beef industry. “My focus is now on helping the younger competitors who are unable to break in their steers or heifers, and others who are not from the beef industry but interested in getting involved. “I definitely recommend the lifestyle to other girls, it is much better than being stuck behind a desk.”

ADVERTORIAL
Economy Starts in The Soil by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials
In these fluctuating times of moderate to poor returns we find ourselves in zones of either going backwards, locked to the spot or unable to go forward with future plans to help stimulate income. What is going on out there? The politicians and the bureaucrats, living off the taxpayers have recently been able to increase their income while the producers of our country struggle to keep their business going forward. If we look back at those good years, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s life was different, people were happy, payouts were good and money was circulating. Agriculture and horticulture were pumping, but since the financial collapse in 1987 producers have struggled to gain parity in the market. I was a victim of
that collapse, having to borrow money from the merchant bankers to keep my commercial cropping business going, while paying 27% interest to the bankers. I believe that since then producers have had to work long and hard to extract any money out of the system. As a producer at that time, I had already shifted from a conventional chemical system to a natural system of production which helped me produce better crops for a better return, which helped to pay off the merchant banks loan; Man, that felt good!
Sales Representatives Wanted We are always looking for sales representatives, we can never have enough.
The role is selling advertising in the Greater Waikato Region. This role has many advantages; 1. We have a database of existing and new clients 2. We have excellent prospecting tools 3. You will earn commission on all sales and any re orders 4. Full training is provided 5. There is no limit to what you can earn. Email your CV to: jobs@nsmm.co.nz
Today, for producers, nothing has really changed. To make money you need to do the hard yards and for those producers on the “chemical treadmill” they need to work harder to keep up with the treadmill. Late last year the Australian Grain Board made a statement that they were moving away from the chemical age to help lift dropping production and reduce toxic chemical input to meet today’s consumer demand for safe certified nutritionally dense food for better health and less hospitalisation. It appears to me that the more we continue down the chemical path, the more production suffers, resulting in leaner payouts. For producers to increase income we need to move away from chemicals; their use-by-date has long expired, and look to the new consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food, while naturally achieving the regional councils call for sustainable farming and a sustainable environment. To achieve this is very simple — all you need to do is drop agro-chemical production and hook into all the benefits nature provides. Agrissentials can take you half way there with our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, with Mother Nature providing the other 50 percent
requirement of rain and sunshine, resulting in better quality production and better returns. While we stay with chemical production and commodity markets we will always be struggling for income. Out of all the countries in the world New Zealand is the most ideally positioned to move to safe, certified nutritionally dense food production. Our isolation, our soils, our sunshine, our potential for water storage, our natural fertilisers and most importantly our enterprising producers, give us the opportunity to be the best producers on the planet and we can easily achieve this goal within 5 years. A year to plan it, 3 years to nationally certify it and an extra year to perfect it — together we can do it. Call 0800 THE KEY (0800 843 539) for a FREE INFO PACK or you can contact your friendly representative Chris Storm (Coromandel/North Waikato) on 021 738 609 or Robyn Vickers (Central Waikato) 021 0203 6926, Ken Pitts (South/West Waikato) 027 5023 036, Simon George (Bay of Plenty) 021 738 521 to find out how Agrissentials’ system will improve farm soil, farm health, environmental health and increase food quality.

Line safety for lifestylers Trees and vegetation are an important part of any landscape, and with careful maintenance powerlines and nature can co-exist peacefully. Property owners are responsible for trees on their property and power companies take care of anything else to do with the lines. Around 20% of unplanned power outages are caused by trees and vegetation near lines. Unruly vegetation can also result in wider damage to line networks. Trees touching power lines can cause electrocution, and even when trees may appear to be well clear of lines, in the event of strong winds or storms, they can cause damage. WEL Networks owns the electricity distribution network throughout the Waikato. However they don’t own the lines on private property, known as service lines. This includes any poles, cross arms, underground cables and insulators. If service lines are shared, for example down a right of way then all property
owners must take responsibility for line safety and tree maintenance. A ‘clear zone’ known as the Growth Limit Zone is required around the lines at all times. Trees growing on private property that reach outside the boundary are the property owner’s responsibility. If trees are within one metre of the growth limit zone property owners will receive a hazard notification letter giving owners the option to have dangerous trees either trimmed or felled. WEL Networks recommends treating lines as ‘live’ at all times and urges people to remember that electricity can jump, meaning you can still get a shock without touching lines or equipment. If any digging is going to be taking place on a property, get professional advice on how to dig correctly. If there needs to be work done around lines, speak to an expert first and explore all maintenance options. Call WEL Networks on 0800 800 935 if there is going to be work around service mains to temporarily shut off power.

DAIRY COMPLIANCE Investing in compliance infrastructure by Andy Bryenton
As the new season begins in farming, all eyes have been on the success of the recent agricultural field days in the Waikato — a barometer of the health of this vital sector of the economy. Despite a lower than average payout for those in the dairy trade, those commentators who have watched the rural market for many years have been pleased to note that the cyclical nature of agriculture has been recognised — while spending on nonessential items has indeed waned, farmers are still working smart to ensure compliance with the standards expected of them by those who they supply with primary goods. As in any industry, standards and practices are there to ensure a balanced
and equitable relationship between the producer and supplier, with guarantees of quality enforced, in this case, for the best of reasons — the health not only of consumers, but of New Zealand’s reputation as a top-grade exporter. Thus, farmers are still investing in the important equipment which allows them to run a modern, healthy and quality-controlled operation, whether in dairy, dry stock or even in cropping. Of course the dairy sector is in the spotlight at this time, and the nature of the goods produced by these hard-

working farmers means that their plant and infrastructure are held to rigorous standards. Fonterra’s handbook for suppliers outlines a list of key areas in which contributing dairy farmers must comply, from the purity of water used for operations (including lack of harmful bacteria and other residues) through to a robust chiller system used to bring milk
down to temperature prior to collection. It’s not just the equipment in and around the milking shed which must meet new standards. As an example of wider requirements, Fonterra now requires new, repaired, or structurally upgraded tanker roadway bridges or crossings to be certified to at least 53 tonne, allowing safe access for their fleet. www.pumpandpurify.co.nz

DAIRY COMPLIANCE ADVERTORIAL
Total bridge compliance Is your new bridge designed, manufactured and installed to NZTA Bridge Manual standard? Unfortunately all bridges are not made equal.
Waterways must be fenced to ensure environmental standards are met, with results in stream and river purity already being felt in the Waikato as a result. These factors, along with the machinery required to hygienically wash down milking sheds and equipment, and the modern milking systems needed to cut back on ills like mastitis, mean that, season after season, the backbone infrastructure of farms must be kept in good shape, no matter what mother nature or global commerce throw at us. A good example is the robust new systems used to treat dairy effluent —
systems which turn what was once an odious problem into a potential source of fertiliser and nutrients. In this arena, farmers have been able to work innovatively within the framework of environmental protective laws to find a sustainable way forward. With the trend toward global free trade pushing further regulation and more exacting measures to ensure milk and meat quality, keeping these vital infrastructural systems at peak efficiency would seem a wise choice, this season as in any other.
SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY! No Helmet Required
There are engineers out there issuing design statements — PS1 for noncompliant bridges, and councils issuing code compliant certificates for these structures that do not comply to the NZTA Bridge Manual. There is only one code for the manufacture of heavy vehicle bridges in New Zealand and that is the NZTA Bridge Manual. Appendix D caters for lightly trafficked rural bridges. Although there is the AS/NZ1170, it is not suitable for New Zealand seismic conditions and does not cater for the
Quigleys Farm Bridges “Bridging The Gap”
impact loads. Most other manufacturers’ kerbs and handrail systems fail to comply and offer little or no safety. The bridge manual states “if a vehicle can fit on a bridge it is expected that it can cross it safely.” Quigley’s Farm Bridges have been manufacturing and installing code compliant bridges for over 24 years. If customers have had their 3.7 metre wide bridge installed in the past, it already caters for the new 53 ton dairy tankers. Their bridges are designed to the NZTA Bridge Manual giving customers peace of mind where quality counts.

DAIRY COMPLIANCE ADVERTORIAL
Sustainable thinking required Sustainable thinking on dairy farms is beneficial for everyone. It ensures you are constantly driving towards your long-term purpose, looking after your people, protecting the planet and maximising/safeguarding your profit streams. Nowhere is sustainable thinking more pertienent currently, than in setting up you farm dairy effluent system. With such high stakes: non-compliance issues, the substantiality of the investment, the potential cost of something going wrong and the financial returns that can potentially be realised from this naturally-derived, nutrientrich waste, the decision must be weighed up carefully. Short-term, cost driven thinking can lead to decisions being made today that will have serious environmental and financial consequences tomorrow, warns Oliver Prestidge of Presco Group’s Environmental Infrastructure division. He has noticed a larger number of farmers this year who want
POND LINING
to ‘do it once and do it right’ when it comes to Farm Dairy Effluent management. “The big increase in the number of Presco Group’s durable concrete Prosumps being installed this season can be put down to one thing,” says Oliver. “Peace of mind.” “After researching all the options, farmers often tell us that there is nothing else that compares with the Prosump’s high strength, reinforced concrete construction. The Prosump comes with a 50 year minimum build-life guarantee, but the reputation of concrete durability speaks for itself. Presco Group are NZ leaders in sustainable dairy farm infrastructure and the sole manufacturers and installers of Prosump effluent sumps. China’s doing it right, why can’t we? by Ian Walker
After spending three weeks on a tour through China it was not without a little irony I returned to New Zealand to calls for the banning of swamp kauri exports. Demands for the regulation of sugary drinks, conservationists protesting about lack of progress on climate change, and if you remove the crazy Auckland house market and the rebuild of Christchurch, an economy hitting the rocks. In China, despite what they term an economic slowdown, it is predicted they will have 220 million high net worth individuals by 2020 and I saw plenty of them. It appeared to me that, even though it’s a one party communist state with a lot of political and environmental challenges, China embraces business and private enterprise to a much higher level than we do in New Zealand. In China things are happening and decisions are being made. When China needs a road they build it. In NZ we identify roads of national significance and then spend years
and millions of dollars talking about it. During my visit I was able to enjoy free and good quality WiFi while being driven in a bus through hilly countryside for five hours whereas in NZ I struggle to receive decent Internet in a rural town with a population of six thousand. Chinese parents invest considerable time and money in educating their children. A child can easily spend double the time per day at school compared to the New Zealand counterpart. In China people have a desire to improve themselves where we seem to continually desire more without greater effort, obligation, or personal responsibility. Many in New Zealand complain about Chinese coming here to live, speculate on residential housing, or invest in farmland. What I saw was a country with a very large population of hard working
EFFLUENT
people driven and competing to improve. They all want to do better than some academic living wage decided by government officials and imposed on business whether they are capable of funding or not. We have calls to restrict dairy farming plus make them pay for maintaining our environment including obligations for climate change while at the same time advocating for a living wage and affordable dairy and meat products. While dairy farmers struggle to have any wage at all we have a government advising the dairy industry not to increase exports to Russia because we may tarnish our reputation with our friends in the United States and Europe. These are the same so called friends who have imposed huge import restrictions on our dairy exports and have done for years. Rather than complain and whine about Asian immigration and investment we

should learn from them. If we want an economy that delivers the living wage, reduce child poverty, and have a great environment it’s time we demonstrated some leadership rather than run everything by committee, start making timely decisions, and embrace science, innovation, business, and enterprise. We need to start looking after ourselves politically and economically rather than worrying what others may or may not think. We need to stop knee jerk reactions banning opportunities because of a few noisy individuals and start making well informed objective decisions based on facts. You can’t increase the costs of producing good quality food and expect to pay less for it at the supermarket. Ever ything has cause and consequence and it’s time we started to understand that. I think China does.

Gianni Ferrari Turboloader
There IS a huge difference
Powerturf NZ is pleased to announce the launch of the Gianni Ferrari Turboloader range in New Zealand. It could be termed as a ‘multi-purpose tool carrier’, or the ‘Swiss army knife’ of small tractors, however it is far more than that. Not all diesel exhaust fluids available in New Zealand are AdBlue®. Choose your product and supplier carefully. If it’s not called AdBlue®, it isn’t the real thing! Insist on Genuine VDA Approved AdBlue®. Copies are never as good as the original...

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET
Is it a wheel loader, telescopic handler or skid steer? The Turboloader has it all covered. The series is based around a compact Kubota diesel powered tractor unit, featuring permanent hydraulic four wheel drive and an articulated steering system. The tractor unit has the benefits of the compact dimensions of a skid steer unit, with the tight turning radius of a wheel loader. The rear wheels always follow the path of the front wheels, minimising the damage or impact on the ground surfaces. The operator sits elevated on the front half of the chassis and is always facing the loader boom and bucket which allows excellent visibility. The joystick operation features a light, smooth feel, with multiple functions too numerous to list. The real trick to the Turboloader is the twin spar, telescopic loader boom that enables the forks or loader bucket to clear heights of more than three metres.
for yo ur workl oad for y budgeour t
The tool holder has approximately 45 tools and attachments available, suited to the self-levelling telescopic boom. These are effortlessly changed from the comfort of the operators seat and include mowers, buckets, forks, grabs, hedge trimmers, augers, trenchers, stump grinder and more.
The boom is designed as a twin spar, to increase torsional rigidity and better visibility of the attachment being used. The versatility of the Turboloader lends itself to farming, landscaping, apiaries, pool installers, industrial sites plus more . RURAL WHEELS
Listening to their constituency
Pay attention!
by Andy Bryenton
Honda quad bikes have been a driving force in rural New Zealand for decades, with a similar staying power as the venerable Massey Ferguson tractor and the Toyota Hilux when it comes to onfarm popularity. That’s not a position which can be kept by standing still, and Honda are careful when designing a new machine to keep the best of the old and incorporate those new little tweaks and changes which most benefit their core market. In an era when many of the ATVs coming into the country seem to have been designed for multiple purposes, hunting and leisure as well as farming. The TRX 500 then, is a chip off the ‘old school’ block. Not in terms of its underpinning technology, for the 500cc Honda is fully equipped with electronic fuel injection for a power boost over the old model, and electric-manual gear selection system as used in modern sports cars. It’s in the area of design and robust construction that Honda have listened to their farming constituency, incorporating features for improved toughness and upping the TRX 500’s capacity for hard work. This is not a quad bike geared toward leisurely trail rides in the country. It’s a farming tool first and foremost, as evidenced by the use of a swing-arm fixed rear axle. Why is this indicative of the Honda’s farming focus? Well, an independent suspension system in back
around road works BATTERY ADDITIVE
Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner would make more sense for busting the trails at high speeds. But this setup means you can tow more and lug more without bottoming out in the mud. It also means less body roll on the steep bits that’s where the TRX 500 is quite at home, tackling New Zealand’s often far from flat pasturelands with a load on. Honda’s focus on farming even goes as far as extra guards to
keep that ever present mud out of the moving parts, and a rear rack that is the perfect size for that other vital farming essential, the dog. An economical 500cc configured with the signature Honda low centre of gravity provides enough power for any day’s work on the land, while still delivering in the vicinity of 100km to a single tank of gas.
A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem,

Scaling the heights of popularity by Andy Bryenton
It was a sneak preview which had many visitors to the recent Field days wondering just what else the Ford Motor Company have up their voluminous sleeve. With the Ranger ute flying high, the outgoing FPV Falcon satiating a need for speed, and the release of the new Mondeo making waves, many would have thought that the blue oval would give their competitors a little breathing space. That is not how Dearborn does business. Hot on the heels of pricing announcements for the stunninglooking new Mustang, which will cost the same as a medium to high spec Holden Commodore - Ford have unveiled what they believe is the future of sports utility practicality. The new Ford Everest is no micro compact crossover. This area of the market is well served by
both the EcoSport, the Kuga and their competitors. No, the Everest sits firmly in the territory relinquished by well, the Territory. Otherwise occupied by the likes of Range Rover, Land Rover and the real elephant in the room, the perennially favoured Land Cruiser. Seven seats are a necessity for any parent who has more than two kids, or anyone who carpools their school runs. Add in anyone who likes to holiday, tow a boat or simply lug huge loads, and you can see why this sector is so huge. The Everest is based on the underpinnings of the Ranger, so from day one it has a pedigree for both on and off road handling. The ute that’s beloved

of tradies, foresters and farmers has been re-skinned in a bold and muscular body-shell, and has had a complete internal transplant to boost the level of luxury enjoyed by driver and passengers alike. With the big 5 cylinder diesel mill of the Ranger doing the hard work under the hood, this big SUV will not lack power, either. Ford may have taken the Ranger as their inspiration, but it’s also apparent that this is no chop and change job. Thousands of man-hours of

engineering have gone into the design. So, is this the machine which will deliver a blue-collar uppercut to the Audi Q7, the Land Rover Discovery or the Mercedes G-class? If the way its wellside ‘little brother’ the Ranger has swept the board is any indication this will definitely be a model to watch. Clever tech and Ford’s rediscovered fun driving dynamics make this an interesting addition to the blue oval stable.
