Rural sector still relies on print media

In a digital age, print media still stands tall for the decision makers of rural New Zealand. That’s the finding of a major survey undertaken recently by four of the major publishers who serve the farming community — and it’s one, which proves that good old-fashioned ink on paper is more than just ‘still relevant’ — it’s a force for change in the Kiwi heartland.

In fact, the survey shows that a whopping 88% of Kiwi farmers read a specialist rural paper weekly. 82% put what they read into practice, ranking rural print media as one of the top three factors in their decision-making. Fully one-third admit that rural publications alone has convinced them to make a purchase for the farm. It seems that these purchases aren’t small, either — the breadth of coverage and the ability to lay out a complete detailed review mean that tractors, vehicles, vet products and agrichemicals top the list of items bought — thanks to the influence of the press. The Rural Media Habits Survey 2018 focuses in on those who manage either large areas of land or substantial numbers of livestock. It drills down to the media access preferences of those at the forefront of agriculture. While the answers unsurprisingly acknowledge the influence of the internet as a communications tool, the importance of print media is thrown into stark focus. Like the ebook, which has resolutely failed to supplant the old-fashioned paperback, the internet is revealed as a preferred tool for quick communication — 80% of respondents picked ‘email’

as their number one digital task, followed by online banking. Third place, went to doing further research into things they’d seen in rural newspapers and magazines. Another key factor in the survey is good news for businesses wishing to reach out to the rural sector. There’s a very clear answer given, here, to the vexing question of quantifying the impact of marketing to our nation’s farmers. When asked how likely they were to pay attention to advertising each week across different media streams, the greatest number agreed that they were likely to read advertising material in rural magazines and newspapers. The area where ads were unlikely to be payed attention to were on the internet and television. It has been tempting in recent years to give credence to rumours that the world of media is going entirely digital. This survey proves otherwise in clear and simple terms. Because out there in rural New Zealand, it seems that the real news is still delivered on paper, and still carries a hefty amount of decisioninfluencing information, appreciated by an audience with their minds on business.

To make the BEST of your produce, you need the BEST equipment! We are celebrating. Exports of New Zealand forest products will top $6 billion for the first time this year. About half the value comes from shipments of sawn timber, paper and other processing. Unlike the dairy industry, which exports nearly all it produces, for forestry, we use a lot in New Zealand. Most of our homes are made from wood. The billion trees which the government wants to see planted over the next ten years – plus genetic and technology gains – will see an even greater role for forestry in our economy for decades into the future. Science funding for bovis fight The coalition government is investing $30 million over two years in scientific research to support the fight against Mycoplasma bovis. “We will continue to call on all the available domestic and international scientific expertise to track and eradicate the disease,” says Agriculture and Biosecurity minister, Damien O’Connor. “This investment will enable us to address the bigger picture scientific challenge and research new tools in the fight against the disease. No other country has attempted eradication, and our farming systems are unique, so there are questions that have never been adequately explored by scientists. “At the top of the list of priorities will be developing a single animal test. This will help us to provide greater clarity to affected farmers, and help us to understand the spread of the disease and to focus our efforts where they are most needed.” The work will be overseen by a Ministry for Primary Industries’ led Strategic Science Advisory Group. “The group will work on ensuring we have the tools we need to better manage and understand the disease — so we can be faster, more efficient and more effective in our response to it,” says Mr O’Connor. “Newly-appointed MPI Departmental Science Adviser, Dr John Roche, will assemble and lead the group, which will include both international

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN Hamish and Nichola Apatu are based in the Cable Bay area and take great pride in their kai moana connection and role as custodians of the sea.

T

hrough their family business Apatu Aqua, the couple provide a wide range of smoked and fresh seafood products, eel and pate. “Our life is a true love story of the ocean, the land, and the flavours of the sea. We lived in Hawke’s Bay. Hamish was involved in the family business but decided he wanted to do something for himself,” says Nichola. His passion for the sea made the decision easy. “He came to the Far North on a ‘boys’ fishing trip with my dad and really liked it. Dad organised for him to go on a crayfish boat, to see if he would like to be a crayfisherman, but you had to have a three ton quota to start which is a huge financial outlay.” Hamish stayed working 10 days on and seven days off

whilst the family remained in Hawke’s Bay and one day he announced he had put an offer on a property. “I came to see the area for myself and liked this block of land with views from all directions, and that was the start of our adventure in 2004,” says Nichola. “We camped on the property and Hamish started researching Kina (sea urchins) to see if it would work as a saleable product. “In November 2005, we started work in the factory, but the Kina were harder to work with than we realised. We diversified and focussed on eel and fish. We still do a small amount of kina for our pate — it is important to harvest them; as they are a bit like the rats of the ocean and can overpopulate and destroy seaweed beds.”

Nichola produces freshly made kina and eel pate’ along with other seafood delights in small quantities guaranteeing freshness

Hamish has a 10m Carey Plank boat, which is set up as a longliner to sustainably catch fish for the fresh fish market. Longlining ensures the fish is kept at premium quality. “He starts at 3am and hauls the line in at 7am. Ideally the fish are alive when they come onboard the boat so we can return any small ones. One restaurant client asked what do we do different for quality, as they get complaints from diners when they use other suppliers. Our catch is held in an ice slurry and processed with salt water. “We originally designed our special smokehouse to produce gourmet smoked eels. The experiments were really successful and we expanded to

include local mullet, snapper, kahawai, and salmon from Bluff.” The Apatu’s use natural smoking methods producing food with depth of flavour, colour, and texture. “We start the fire at 2am with manuka logs and we occasionally turn the racks to get a nice even smoke for around 10 hours. “It is all done by hand, not mechanically controlled and we cook up to 300kg of kaimoana at a time and send orders all over the country, including to supermarkets.” When extra fish is needed Hamish and Nichola source locally to support others. “All our fish is caught here in New Zealand. of kahawai and mullet, along with a packaged range that is labelled with our branding. “You cannot take shortcuts to produce quality. Slow smoking gives the fish fullness of flavour that comes from respecting our traditional methods. Along with fishing, smoking fish and making pates, we offer a professional service for smoking and vacuum packing fish for others. “The secret to our success is minimal intervention and having the freshest catch to start with. We are 100 per cent natural and preservative free.” Nichola says seafood is naturally low in fat and high in protein and omega-3. “Our pates are made in small batches to ensure consistency with natural ingredients and have become a popular alternative to mass-produced

dips. I grow my own herbs and our pates contain 60 per cent premium fish. We have one staff member on the boat and two in the factory.” The Apatu’s say the best way to care for your fish is keep it cold and recommend to buy and eat it straight away. “It takes a while to build a successful business and we have had our share of ups and downs. “It is particularly harder here in the beautiful Far North as we are isolated, therefore a lot of freight cost. “Hawke’s Bay is beautiful too, but up here we don’t get frosts. We have a view of the sea wherever we look — it is amazing. We have taken a couple of direction changes along the way, but I think we are in a good place. Through the lows you keep going, you don’t give up.”

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

CONTINUES BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

The success of Walter and Maria Van Lier’s flower growing adventure began in 1951 when they arrived from Holland to begin a new life.

T

he couple originally started growing potatoes in 1952 and have become nationwide rose suppliers known as Van Lier Nurseries where the family produce some of New Zealand’s finest rose blooms. “Continuing in the traditions Walter and Maria, fondly called Opa and Oma, their son Theo and grandson Harry now run the company that annually grows more than 1.6 million rose stems,” says business manager Joanne Hurley. “Carnations were the first cut flower, Opa grew and in 1974 he saw the romantic necessity for long stem roses, and by the 1980s they were the main component of the business. VLN has 14,000sqm of glasshouse planted with more than 35 rose varieties. They also produce other cut flowers — Alstroemeria, Gypsophilia, Limonium,

Hellebores and Parzival. Recently we built a 2,000sqm glass house and shed for propagation. We propagate plants for ourselves and other cut flower growers and are the sole provider of carnation cuttings in New Zealand. They also grow the houseplant Zanzibar Gem and would like to introduce others to the range. A gas-fueled boiler heats water, which is pumped through the pipes to keep the glasshouse heated. Fifteen micro and macronutrients are delivered through the irrigation system to produce topquality flowers. Summer roses are harvested three times daily during peak harvest to ensure that the flowers are consistently picked at the right stage of opening. Several quality checks are made for straightness and strength, damage, pests or disease and head tightness.

Walter and Maria Van Lier’s flower growing adventure started in 1951 and continues to be a successful business “When I first joined VLN 11 years ago the immediate challenge was to improve the company’s profitability. In recent years we have been able to reinvest back into the business and take advantage of new technologies to improve productivity. It is rewarding to see the family enjoy the fruit of their labour,” says Joanne. “To keep up to date we look at the trends and discuss with our florists what they require annually.”

The Van Lier staff travel to growing trials in Europe to choose their rose varieties. “Bringing new stock into New Zealand is a lengthy and costly process. We apply for permits and go through at least a six-month quarantine process, rigorous testing and cull of the varieties that were initially imported.” Fifty plants of each selected variety are then made and planted in the trial area.

“We hold open days showcasing these and send samples to florists for their feedback. Once a variety is chosen as a production plant, it takes 12–18 months for it to mature to full production. Our flowers have not travelled across the world and are grown with minimum pesticides. “We have the largest range of cut rose varieties in the country including the exclusive David Austin Roses — he is a world-famous English rose grower. “David wanted to create a cut cultivated rose and nearly bankrupt himself in his achievement. The Patience has a dense centre that is fragrant and is popular as a wedding flower. Another favourite rose is Avalanche, from a Dutch breeder and Kim Kardashian used them at her wedding.” Cut cultivation roses have different characteristics to outdoor rose bushes and breeders invest heavily in developing new varieties. “They don't have the fragrance because the focus is about productivity and stem quantity. Florists need a long vase life, good stem length and flower shape, and few thorns — all important factors when producing floral art designs and wedding bouquets.” Joanne says rose growing is in the blood and Harry will tell you he is a ‘rose grower’ not just a business owner. “Harry loved completing his internship in Europe and bringing the innovations

He is proud of his rose growing abilities. “It is fulfilling and gratifying to provide top quality flowers to people. My favourite is Peach Avalanche — I love the colour and the fact it has no thorns — its vase life is up to three weeks, and it holds its bloom. “This is a typical small family business carrying on a passion with a green thumb. It is a big achievement to remain sustainable over three generations particularly given that the core product is a discretionary spend — you don’t have to have cut flowers to stay alive. They definitely bring a lot of pleasure though. “Looking for ways to be innovative is a credit to Opa’s legacy, and Harry

and Theo are able to pass on the generational success. Theo’s other son Steffan works in the business and was recently involved in setting the bench system in the new propagation house. “Opa was still coming up to the nursery, and before he died in 2016, Theo would put Opa’s scooter into the covered trailer and Opa would inspect the stock. We had a problem with hollow stem once, and Opa knew immediately it was a copper deficiency. He certainly passed on his knowledge, and it is appreciated today and will be for generations to come.” The Van Liers sell their products to florists, other growers, and wholesalers throughout the country.

Rural enterprise means remote living in many cases, with the nation’s farming community scattered away from urban centres and essential services, including health provision.

ealth advice is now available at the farmhouse doorstep through Amanda Haskell, who believes wholeheartedly in natural medicine as a way of helping others, through her company Orange Clinic of Natural Medicine. “My consultant Libby Adams and I have a wealth of experience in the health industry and offer consultations nationwide via personal clinic appointments, video link, skype or phone,” says Amanda. “Libby holds diplomas in naturopathy and herbal medicine, diet and nutrition, iridology, massage and homoeopathy.” Amanda has advanced diplomas in naturopathy and medical herbalism, a BA in health science majoring in complementary medicine, and is a registered enrolled nurse.

“Naturopathy is about treating the cause of problems, not just the symptoms. We aim to get people’s health back on track quickly with a clear treatment plan and support. We are members of the NZ Society of Naturopaths Inc and have access to a large group of technical advisers and support networks to provide first-rate health assistance. “Our appointments by videolink are proving very popular with families unable to get into the clinic. Herbal treatments have been used for more than 2,000 years and are still the number one treatment for more than 70 per cent of the world’s population because they work.” Amanda and Libby regularly attend seminars to keep updated with new products, treatments and current

technologies. “ U n l i ke phar maceutical dr ugs, naturopathic treatments have no side effects and are safe to use alongside prescription medicines if prescribed by your naturopath,” says Amanda. “I trained as a nurse and was giving out drugs left, right and centre. Each medication had additional medications to counteract side effects. It didn’t make sense to me, but it wasn’t until I experienced this for myself that I realised how shocking it was. Through research, I decided to retrain in natural therapies. “I had an overweight client on blood pressure medication and was sick for the five years involved. She has lost 15 kilos, is feeling incredible, and is transitioning off her meds as she no longer requires them. “The proof is in the pudding with natural therapies. We get people bursting into tears because it is so easy to feel healthy again and they wonder why they haven’t been shown this way before.” The pressure many farmers are under is intense, and their ailments vary including migraines and digestive issues, but the cause is often stress. “We love working with farmers because animal care is their number one priority; however, they often forget about their own needs. “Years ago my friend’s garage was full of supplements including magnesium,

Amanda and Libby believe wholeheartedly that natural medicine is a positive way to help keep the whole family healthy

iron, and molasses for her horses. She came to me for health advice, and it was clear from her deficiencies that she required exactly what she was giving her animals. She hadn’t realised that she also needed nutritional care.” Environmental situations including drought, too much rain, and diseases coming through the farm can cause problems not only to the animals but to their carers. “We offer natural and effective support to look after our humans as well as their animals,” says Amanda. New clients can make an appointment and fill out a health questionnaire on the orangehealth.co.nz website.

“Once the completed questionnaire/ health profile is received we start with a phone or video call. “The questions help us gather information and see the whole picture of issues that can cause illness and request blood tests if required.” Treatment often begins with a specifically designed herbal formula to assist the immune and digestive systems and support the side effects of stress both in and on the body. “An old name for natural medicine was folk medicine, based on various plants and their healing qualities. One doctor wrote that his use of natural medicine came from watching animals.

9

He visited an alpine village where people were strong and robust into their 80s. “After obser ving their natural lifestyle and remedies, he retrained as a naturopath and herbalist. “He learnt not to sleep with windows open on cold nights because you need to breathe warm air to avoid getting sick. “He watched chickens tuck their beak under their wing to sleep and keep a natural temperature balance — it all makes sense. Hay fever, anxiety, depression, palpitations, insomnia, headaches, mood swings, and fatigue, boils, rashes, aches and joint stiffness can be treated naturally. “We can help with allergies, arthritis, immune disorders, asthma, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s, bloating and constipation, PMT, menopause, infertility and fibroids,” says Amanda. “Pre-conception and post-natal care, high and low blood pressure, high cholesterol, varicose veins, glue ear, ADHD, and all childhood conditions. Balancing weight, diabetes and blood sugars, detoxification of the liver and bowel, presence of heavy metals and much more are within our care. “At times the issues you have may be a side effect of something else going on in your system. Natural therapies are a positive way to improve your health and well-being.”

Look after your plumbing All farms and rural properties at one time or another have waterworks issues, maintenance or upgrading of equipment necessities and engaging a master plumber is your best guarantee of quality workmanship. Dairy systems, water pumps, drain laying, septic systems, irrigation, water tank installation and household plumbing all need expert knowledge. No matter how skilled one is at maintenance in the home, and contrary to what some people think, plumbers do far more than just sink and toilet repairs — they work to ensure your home is protected from water and plumbing related accidents, like pipes bursting in winter or flooding. With their expert knowledge of plumbing systems, they can run a plumbing inspection on your home, cowshed or other situation and come with the tools needed to fix the issue then and there. If you have a leak or plumbing fault, instead of messing around with your own pipes and systems, a professional will know exactly where to start looking and how to fix it. If a leak is a full-blown flooding or burst pipe, they will also know how to change the entire pipeline, and know the safety procedures to undertake. Hiring a professional means that the job is done efficiently, without wasted time and money. Master Plumbers is a national membership organisation that represents excellence in the plumbing, gasfitting and drain-laying trades. It

started back in 1901 when a dedicated group of plumbers got together to ensure the very highest standards in New Zealand’s plumbing industry. Today there are 17 associations and branches up and down the country, and the organisation are committed to nurturing future generations of skilled tradespeople through the Master Plumbers-owned Masterlink group apprentice training scheme. The ongoing Quality Assurance review process considers everything from a member business’s health and safety systems to its terms and conditions of trade and employment contracts.

Master Plumbers also provide members with a wide range of resources and training opportunities to support them in staying up with the latest technologies, products and compliance requirements because they want to ensure their members are able to give customers top quality service and workmanship, backed by the one-year residential Master Plumbers Guarantee. Transporting stock safely When it comes to transporting stock, there are a number of things to remember, which will make the process as easy as possible for all involved. When hiring a carrier, ensure they know the regulations and that they keep their truck and any relevant equipment clean and free from disease, so infections are not spread from property to property. Where necessary make sure all stock being transported are NAIT registered, and all relevant paperwork is available. Dealing with waste and keeping effluent off the roads is one of the major responsibilities from the farmer, the stockbroker, the transport company, those at the destination and local and

regional councils. Ensure that the effluent tanks are empty before setting off. It is important to keep stock off green feed for at least four hours before they are loaded onto the truck. The law takes animal welfare very seriously and has strict rules relating to animal transport and suffering. The person in charge must examine the selected stock prior to transport, to ensure that all animals are fit and healthy for transportation. All animals must be able to stand and bear weight on all four limbs and be fit enough to withstand the journey without suffering unreasonable or unnecessary pain or distress unless a current veterinary certificate as to the fitness of the animal for transport is completed. Any animal likely to give birth during transport must not be selected. All infected Mycoplasma bovis properties under a Restricted Place Notice require permits to move animals between properties and to slaughter. The permits require the truck to be cleaned and disinfected at the end of each movement. Controls set in place include a comprehensive cleaning and disinfection protocol which has been provided to the driver by the Ministry

for Primary Industries. This protocol ensures that vehicles pose a negligible biosecurity risk. All vehicles are being cleaned and disinfected on leaving the properties. Vehicles carrying animals to the meat processing premises — are disinfecting on exit, going directly to the meat processor (not to other farms) and then being thoroughly cleaned and disinfected at the plant on completing the job. New Zealand Livestock Transport Assurance has been set up at the instigation of some of New Zealand’s major processing companies: AFFCO New Zealand, South Pacific Meats Ltd, Canterbury Meat Packers, Riverlands Meats, Ovation New Zealand and Silver Fern Farms. The NZLTA programme’s purpose is to ensure that all livestock being

transported to processing plants are treated humanely and with proper regard for their welfare, meeting the requirements of the New Zealand Code of Animal Welfare. All trucking operators transporting stock to these company’s plants must be a member of the NZLTA. Their drivers must be trained by an NZLTA-approved trainer and registered with the NZLTA. To ensure that operators and drivers continue to meet the NZLTA’s standards — audits of drivers, vehicles and animals will be carried out at processor sites by the processing company and AsureQuality staff. When engaging a stock transporter, ensure they are up-to-date and aware of the relevant processes required for moving your animals.

Fire season ready by Ann van Engelen

Creating an atmosphere of warmth and comfort during the colder months with a roaring fire is something that has been enjoyed by many Kiwi families for generations. Making sure you enjoy a toasty, warm, dry home when the frosts and rain kick in means taking care of few jobs in advance. If you have a fireplace, collecting or purchasing wood is one job that needs to be taken care of early enough to ensure dry burning fuel, or you can source a modern appliance such as a heat pump. Either way the entire process, from logs to embers, or clicking the switch is often covered by local specialists. Living in a rural area, there is always the option of taking down old, unwanted or dangerous trees but the cost of tools to accomplish the task may mean hiring an arborist or contractor is more beneficial, not just for cost saving but also safety. If you decide to do it yourself, ensure you have a good chainsaw, and the size, power, sharpness of the chain and weight are all correct for the job at hand. Talk to the experts at your local dealership as they often advise homeowners, farmers, and forestry professionals on the best products available. Don’t forget the safety gear, including glasses, ear protection, chaps, gloves and safety helmet as well. It is possible to turn leftover waste into valuable mulch and chip for garden beds and using a portable chipper with a petrol engine, should be all you need for the farm or lifestyle block.

These generally chomp through brush and twigs with ease, again, ensure you know the safety regulations as you don’t want to lose a finger. A variety of mechanical and electrical splitters are also available to quarter wood, which then needs to be stacked in a dry place to help you get the most warmth out of your fuel. Remember the fireplace itself, needs to be swept and checked by a qualified chimney sweep, a member of the NZ Home Heating Association or a licensed plumber. Failure to do so could void your

insurance, so an annual check is always best. The old-fashioned portable gas heaters are no longer considered a safe system to use for many reasons. For options on electric heating systems, see your local heating specialists for advice. These are effective and keep houses and offices warm, dry and at an even temperature all winter long.

Bikes can be water blasted after use, and the Prolan stays on. “Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quadbikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. Therefore, it’s not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value.” Agricultural fertiliser companies are also realising a coating of Prolan’s

Working with balance by Ann van Engelen

Health and safety is something we are all aware of and keeping our health at an optimum level is important to everyone in our lives including staff, contractors, neighbours, friends and family. Taking care of ourselves and those around us should be our number one priority and ensuring we take time out needs to be a regular thing, and there are a variety of things people are doing off-farm during the various cycles of the year, which in turn helps keep our minds that much clearer. DairyNZ research shows there are key contributors to a person’s overall wellness and it will be a different experience that will work for each person. Some people enjoy catching up with other farmers and see how they are doing things differently and have a healthy discussion over farm systems to keep on top of their game — whilst others attend events. Fishing is often referred to as a calming activity and is on many a calendar at least once a month, even if it is just for a few hours. The costs are minimal, and you can go alone, with friends or family. The same goes for surfing — a few hours out amongst the waves is often referred to as exhilarating and calming. Hunting, playing sports or going for a bike ride with the family are also recommended activities. Some families eat dinner around the table most nights without technology

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT present and they each share one good thing and one bad thing they experienced that day. This provides an opportunity to know what each person is up to. Have a budget and plan set in advance, so you know your financial position and if necessary, discuss succession plans and the future of the farm, so your family know where things are headed. During calving or lambing, some people stop and spend a few minutes each day watching the babies play whilst others walk on the farm as often as possible. If you are out for the day, have

good sustenance with you in the form of fruit and nuts, sandwiches and healthy food and don’t forget the water or health tonic to stay hydrated. No matter how busy things get, stay connected to your friends and family and have time for a laugh with mates. Having good friends and support ensures the not so good times are easier to handle. If you or someone you know needs help, your local doctor is a good place to start and don’t forget the Rural Support Trust is there for everyone and is run by local people who are well-networked and trained — phone 0800 787 254.

With winter fast approaching and the weather becoming more unhelpful, now is a good time to check the state of your trees and check your waterways are clear. Hiring an experienced contractor means you have access to all of their knowledge — not just for land-clearing issues, but often tree maintenance and removal, drain and waterway clearing as well as other miscellaneous tasks at hand, which can often be dealt with by the one person. Have the contractor come in and check your large trees for safety, particularly if you are relatively new to the rural lifestyle. Removing or trimming them before the wet weather hits can save a lot

Fonterra joins malnutrition prevention

Fonterra has joined with 24 scientific and nutritional organisations in a major international project in a quest to find solutions to the growing issue of malnourishment in older people. Older people in many countries, including New Zealand, are at higher risk of health issues because of poor nutrition. The five-year project, The Prevention of Malnutrition in Senior Subjects in the EU, is investigating the role diet and appetite may have in malnutrition and functional decline of people over 70 years. “The research findings will help Fonterra develop innovative new food products that prevent malnutrition and support active and healthy ageing,”

says Fonterra Director NZMP Medical Nutrition, Maarten van Beek. In New Zealand, almost 75 per cent of older adults involved in a recent Massey University study led by Associate Professor, Carol Wham, were found to be at risk of malnourishment, or were malnourished, when they were admitted to hospital. “Older people need more protein to support good health, as malnourishment can cause muscle shrinking, as well as other health-related problems. The findings should offer valuable insights

Holiday Guide Planning your escape by Jill Dickie

Living the dream lifestyle on a farm or lifestyle block sounds idyllic, and there should never be a need to leave, but the reality is everyone needs to get away from the routine now and then. That means considering the animals’ feed supply, the mail pickup and how safe and secure your property will be while you’re gone. The most reassuring option is to arrange to have someone live in your property for the duration. There are various minding and house-sitting services available to choose from, with responsible, knowledgeable people who will care for your home and stock. Another option for your animals is to rotate their grazing paddocks in such a way that they will be placed close to a road where a friendly neighbour can keep an eye on them for you, and take action if needed, and perhaps they have a teenager at home that might check on your cat and feed your chickens. Maintaining healthy relationships with neighbours is important for cooperative living and at holiday times the friendships built to enable you a relaxing trip away confident in the knowledge your property is well looked after. If you’re holidaying in summer months, it’s a good idea to do a quick maintenance check ensuring

fences are in good repair, and water troughs are functioning and set up an automatic sprinkler system on your vegetable garden. Indoor pot plants can be set in buckets to draw up the water when they need it. For the winter months similar things apply with regard to fencing and water, but also some thought should be given to animal shelters or sheds. You may choose to lock gates around and into your property, though this can be a signal that you’re not home, and if your home isn’t visible from the roadside potential unlawful visitors won’t be seen. If you have precious stock like cattle that are clever at opening gates, it may be an opportune time to put a combination lock on. So far none have been known to work out the correct number! As is ‘Murphy’s law’ whatever doesn’t happen when you’re at home, will potentially happen when you’re not, so leaving a thorough list of instructions and contact phone numbers with

a housesitter is a perfect way of counteracting troubles. An instruction list should include animal feeding schedules, where to turn off electric fencing, combination

lock numbers (but don’t let the cows see!), emergency contact details such as doctor, vet and neighbours and your own itinerary and contact number. Happy travels.

Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Inversion helps to:

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

• Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when difference muscles are stressed they become tight machine is that the body is constantly which restricts the flow of blood and lymph repairing itself, however if the wear and through the muscles so toxins build up, tear on the body is greater than the body’s to repair itself, it is a slow decline. Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the ability Teeter slowly brings the body out of its muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle The decline and allows the body to repair itself, rocking motion that stimulates circulation resulting in a far healthier life. and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into If you are serious about investing in your your lymph system where it stimulates health and really sorting your issues out, lymph flow and deals with it. Most people come see us at one of our local roadshows, with serious neck issues see a large you have nothing to lose and chances are, a improvement after only one treatment. lot to gain.

BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

Good farming practices Beef + Lamb New Zealand has welcomed the launch of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan as providing a whole of sector approach that builds on the good work already being done by individual industries. “The launch of the Good Farming Practice Action plan is an exciting oppor tunity for New Zealand’s agricultural sector,” says B+LNZ CEO, Sam McIvor. “This is the first time that farming and horticulture leaders, regional councils and central government have come together and agreed to a set of good practice principles and actions to implement those across the country.” The 21 principles cover nutrient levels, waterways, land and soil health, effluent management and water and irrigation systems, and these principles build on the work already being done in the sector. “As an industry, we see the aims of the Good Farming Practice Action Plan as completely achievable. At Beef + Lamb New Zealand, we launched our Environmental Strategy and Implementation Plan last month. It is aligned with the Good Farming Practice Action Plan and will support its achievement,” Mr McIvor said. “Clean water is one of the four priorities in our strategy. Our strategy sets out a number of ways in which we will improve water quality, including all

sheep and beef farmers to have a tailored farm environment plan by the end of 2021. “The Good Farming Practice Action Plan gives us a whole of sector approach to lifting our environmental game even more and taking a consistent approach.” The Good Farming Practice Action Plan for Water Quality can be downloaded from the Federated Farmers of New Zealand website. Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Environmental Strategy and Implementation Plan aims for every sheep and beef farm to have a tailored and active environmental plan by the end of 2021 and is available at beeflambnz. com/environment-strategy.

Could you write a story about dairy effluent? Something interesting for our farmers to read? This was the question posed to the writer who freely admits cattle are not her thing, having had a childhood around sheep and then spent many years around horses. What is this thing called effluent? Obviously much more than the first thoughts of bovine faecal matter; it appears this waste product actually has some use! Research shows it is a valuable resource, which, when managed well, increases pasture production and reduces fertiliser costs, so we’re picking that farmers need to effectively reuse this nutrient-filled product on their pastures yet at the same time minimising adverse effects on the environment. That much is easy to understand, however then our research gets a little more tricky as we discover there are various methods of building effluent

Effluent Pumping Services Spreading of all Effluent Ponds 0800 111 690 • 027 217 6779

systems, managing the storage of said product and compliance checks. A traditionally designed system with effluent washed to a storage area from the yards, then being pumped out onto paddocks via irrigators seems very easy to understand, but we have to take into account the climate and soil conditions in our area and how they will affect the effectiveness of the system. Understanding the soil water deficit is essential to prevent ponding and run-off, and to avoid applying effluent to saturated soils — now we are getting a little technical, but luckily there are calculators available to work out appropriate spreading levels. Considering the storage facility, it seems the most common options are above-ground tanks and lined ponds, neither of which one would want to fall into! Again a calculator is available for working out much storage area is needed for your particular farm based

on soil types and how much rainfall is common. Fencing ponds is an obvious safety priority to prevent stock and children from accidentally falling in, and keeping gates locked and perhaps using electric fencing as well certainly makes sense. Escape ladders are also recommended as an alternative escape route, as is good signage advising of potential dangers. Guidebooks for self-monitoring compliance issues are available for download, which would highlight areas for improvement, but even better is a visit from a dairy effluent warrant of fitness assessor to make sure your system is fit for purpose, nutrient levels are appropriate and identify any health and safety hazards you may not be aware of. It all seems pretty simple to understand, and while this writer feels more educated on the topic, she feels she might stick with the easier to manage equine equivalent!

Abundant Health

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of joint pain. All chronic disease starts with damage to certain cell types that then damages tissue which causes the symptoms we feel. The real driver behind cartilage loss is the health of specialised cells called chondrocytes. These amazing cells secrete and repair cartilage matrix. Anything that affects chondrocyte cells could cause cartilage damage. Mechanical force (injury) can trigger an increase in free radicals, which can cause the death of chondrocytes. In some cases, it is as much about a failure of cell antioxidants defences. The problem is that chondrocytes cannot replicate. Once a chondrocyte dies, the tiny patch of cartilage it maintained will eventually disintegrate. The body tries to fix the problem through the process of inflammation, which is ineffective — it ends up making the problem worse. In my experience, the inflammatory part of OA causes more pain and discomfort than the actual cartilage loss. Just a note that commonly prescribed cholesterol-lowering medication can either

cause joint pain or worsen the pain from existing arthritis. In these cases, I add a high-grade coenzyme Q10 (CoQSol) to replace that lost by the medication. Call me for details. I have many clients that are largely symptom-free despite having significant cartilage loss. I have been dealing with a couple where one has an arthritic knee while the other has OA in the spine and hip. I started them on a double dose of my joint supplement. This meant that they were initially taking 1,600mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine and 400mg of a potent 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. I put both of them on a double dose of my high chondroitin/turmeric joint product, and both are much more comfortable. The sore back is much better, and the hip and knee pain have significantly reduced. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.
