Using advanced computer modelling, University of Waikato doctorate student Electra Kalaugher has assessed how climate change could affect dairy farms in New Zealand Farms located in Northland, Waikato, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Canterbury and Southland have been used as case studies, providing a diverse cross-section of farming systems and climate change scenarios. The aim of the research is to understand the impact climate change could have on real dairy farms in the future and which practical strategies allow farmers to effectively adapt to change while at the same time improving their efficiency and productivity. Ms Kalaugher initially came up with the concept of looking at adaptation of dairy farms to climate change as a good angle to test the future resilience of dairy farming systems. “I think the sustainability of dairy systems in the face of something like climate change is one place where production and environmental goals can find common ground,” she said. Management strategies and other relevant data from the case study farms were gathered and set up in the computer model. Two different climate scenarios were applied to see the effects on production and profit. Four adaptation options were introduced and also studied. Ms Kalaugher said the other aspect to the research is looking at how to integrate the results from the modelling work into the ‘real life’ more complete picture of what is likely to affect a farm’s resilience and capacity to adapt to something like climate change. “Overall the modelling work shows a negative economic impact from climate change, so it is an important thing to consider in terms of how dairy farms develop in future. “How far this negative impact goes and which parts of the system are most

University of Waikato doctorate student Electra Kalaugher

affected depends on the location and current management practices of the farm.” But there has also been a positive message from the research. “Changing some simple and well known management practices show a lot of potential to compensate for most of these negative impacts.” The impact of climate change on pest and disease populations was not able to be included in the modelling work. Ms Kalaugher said the results provide farmers with an opportunity to consider how they might manage their farms in the future with the projected changes in climate. Her computer modelling project is part of a broader project which looks into a wide range of adaptations for dairy systems. It also provides a multi-sector stock-take of opportunities arising from climate change for primary industries. Funding for the project has been provided by DairyNZ and NIWA through the Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change Research Programme through the Ministry for Primary Industries.

A watch on Waikato water

Water quality in the Waikato River is in fact better than it once was. Urban waste-water treatment has improved considerably. Over the past ten years however, levels of nitrogen and phosphorus in the river have risen, probably as a result of land use changes. Today it is not pristine but it’s now much cleaner than in 1950s and 60s. eF

The council’s stand at Fieldays zeroed in on providing farmers with information on protecting profits as well as the environment, continuing its ongoing emphasis on offering advice on a range of methods farmers can use to both protect water quality and farm more cost effectively, Council chairman and dairy farmer, Peter Buckley, says the Waikato River and our other waterways — the Waipa, the Waihou and the Piako — help shape and define our region. “They’re a key part of our landscapes and Waikato’s identity. “As a born and bred Waikato farmer, I’m committed to protecting those waterways and I know many examples of my fellow farmers working hard on this front too. “We all know good water quality supports a range of

environmental, social and cultural values, as well as making sure we farmers have the water we need to operate our business effectively.” But he added that water quality in the region was being significantly compromised, and welcomed the opportunity for the council to discuss with farmers their role in making changes to the way the region’s water resources are protected. Those changes are already happening through various mechanisms, including co-management of the Waikato River with iwi and consideration of a regional plan change to give effect to the new Vision and Strategy for the Waikato River and to set targets or limits for water quality as required by the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. “At the core of this work on water is the need to ensure we have the right framework to support our environmental and economic goals as a region,” Mr Buckley adds. “I personally find it very satisfying that many individual farmers, agricultural businesses and organisations, our iwi partners and community organisations are already working together very constructively on this. Getting things right will be a big challenge for all of us.”

While he was born and raised on the farm at aged 17 he spent two years on a cadet training farm in the Hawkes Bay before going to Massey University to gain his Diploma of Agriculture. Following that he spent a half season on a Southland dairy farm before returning home to do a season as herd manager before stepping up into the contract milking position. “I have pride in the property — everyone ahead of me has worked hard to make the farm what it is and I needed to step up to make sure their good work didn’t go to waste,” he says. Philmara has been well farmed over the years and because of this operations run very smoothly. Over the past five years more emphasis has been put on breeding the type of cow they prefer — a smaller sized animal yet one that

can still achieve top production. They AI for the first six weeks and use a jersey bull over the tail-enders for the last six weeks of mating. Sixty percent of the farm is mowable, the remaining 40 percent hilly to steep. It has a good fertiliser history and is fortunate to have two water bores. Zero pugging has been achieved through the use of both a stand-off pad and feed pad. Animal husbandry is vital to

good production so good hygiene is emphasised, and mastitis kept minimal by treating all cows with dry cow therapy as they are dried off and teat spraying them three times a week during winter. A new effluent storage system has upgraded the effluent system meaning the effluent irrigators which spray the paddocks don’t have to work all the time. Mr White and farm hand Dominic Rhodes both attended an industry effluent management course which has given them a better understanding of the importance of correct procedures. Waterways have been fenced off and trial plantings started. Stock are rotated according to pasture growth. “I do a plate walk and pasture measurement every two weeks”, said Mr White. “I am a strong believer in utilising each blade of grass, negating wastage, without compromising production.” Around 80 tonne of silage is made off the property and fed out mainly over the summer. Maize and palm

Now with his own 290 cow herd Mr White will take up the 50-50 position on his parent’s newly purchased 85-hectare property on Dukeson Rd. He plans within the next three to four years to gain an additional 50-50 position and will run both farms with the help of employees as a way of fasttracking himself into his own farm. While he see the Waikato as the ‘cream’ area for farming he is keeping Waikato contract milker Thomas White was an open mind where he will purchase. runner up in New Zealand Dairy Industry Farm Manager of the Year Awards Thomas White “Farm ownership is always a hard road so you can’t afford to be fussy.” “The competition itself was excellent He is stoked about his industry win — I met a lot of people doing lots of good and says he entered the competition as things and gained value from having to a way to benchmark himself. look in-depth at my own business. ccording to historical records it was originally built as a store for the products (rather than wheat granary) made in the wooden flour mill alongside it. At the time it was considered a pioneering example of mass concrete construction — not only fire resistant, but able to keep rats at bay — it was made from imported cement. The concrete contained strands of ungalvanised barbed wire and led its architect — TH White —

to claim it as the earliest reinforced concrete building in the Southern Hemisphere. It was commissioned in 1878 for use as a store alongside two wooden granaries and mill within the riverside complex at Lamb’s Mill. The wooden mill itself reportedly to have once belonged to Maori had been shipped upstream from Waerenga by the steam ship Rangiriri in 1877. The two-storey mill had been previously established in 1871 at the junction of the Waikato and Waipa Rivers to grind wheat and other grains produced by Maori and other farmers. Its foundation reflected a significant change in flour processing after the third New Zealand — or Waikato War (1863-1864), with Pakeha mills replacing smaller Maori-owned operations in the region. SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Waikato Farming Lifestyles June 2012 growing wheat in the Waikato long before 1870. A report in the Waikato Times in 1878 quotes a ‘Mr Hunt’ saying “no wheat was grown in the Waikato by either Europeans or Maori in 1870”, but John O’ Hare from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust Society says “Maori had been growing wheat, fruit and vegetables in commercial quantities in the Waikato since the 1840s.” It could be seen he wanted to take the credit for the following boom himself saying it was he who had induced the ‘company’ to offer a five shilling per bushel guarantee to induce all farmers including “natives” to grow wheat. The concrete store erected soon after the installation of steam-operated production at the mill demonstrated confidence during the economic boom of the 1870s. Optimism was increased by the arrival of the railway from Auckland to the town in 1877,

The store was designed by a 35-year-old Mr T H White who had settled on a farm at Taupiri in 1873. According to records he had been educated in Birmingham and Paris and had practiced as an architect before coming to New Zealand.

were also depression years and this would have no doubt had an impact on the prosperity of the mill. With the regional flour business in decline, it was then used for flax production becoming part of the Walsh Brothers’ operations from 1889 to cessation around 1915 The concrete store has since been used by the Ngaruawahia Regatta Association to house canoes used in the annual regatta. It is considered of great historical and cultural value for its connections with the development of agriculture and flour production in the Waikato, the town’s commercial importance in the nineteenth century and as a visible reminder of the largest colonial flour mill in the region. It was listed with NZHP Trust in 1990. Written from various sources and information obtained with thanks from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

He also designed Firth Tower and another building in Matamata and other buildings in Auckland and Hamilton. The idea of reinforcing concrete was revolutionary at the time.

enabling distribution to be carried out by train as well as by river. It is understood that at some stage the wooden mill was destroyed by fire and was replaced with some urgency — due to the demand for its products — with a three-storey brick mill. It was during this time the Kiwi Flour Mill opened in Hamilton and a number of local mills also came into existence, but for the next decade the Ngaruawahia mill remained the largest and most important in the region. The mill was taken over by the Waikato Steam Navigation and Coal Mining Company in 1883, but by 1887 was experiencing financial difficulties. It is believed the Waikato mill was disadvantaged by the moist atmosphere which meant local wheat had to be stacked for at least five weeks before it could be threshed unlike it competitors in California and Australia who could thresh it in the fields. Are your joints complaining? Joints are any part of the body where 2 or more bones meet. The main types of joints are the fibrous joints such as tooth sockets, those solely of cartilage such as vertebrae discs and thirdly the mobile synovial joints such as knees and shoulders. The most common problems that affect joints are accidental damage especially to these mobile joints, all forms of arthritis and specific problems with joint structures such as bursitis and tendonitis. Our knees and shoulders are incredibly complex synovial joints. Have a look at an anatomical image of a shoulder joint and you will see what I mean. There are tendons attached to bones, tendon sheaths to allow tendon movement, joint cavities with synovial fluid, little bags of lubricant called bursars and of course the cartilage covering the bones. All of these structures can cause problems including arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis. Osteoarthritis is the progressive loss of the cartilage that covers the ends of bones. The pain is as much caused by inflammation as the actual loss of cartilage. While there is obviously some wear and tear aspect to the disease the latest research suggests that this is a true disease process rather than just accumulated wear. Research in the last decade by K. Yudoh et al (2005) and C. Ziskoven et al (2010) indicates that the real cause may oxidative stress which then triggers inflammation. This concludes that free radicals damage the chondrocyte cells that make and support cartilage. If these cells are damaged and die this results in the erosion of cartilage. In other words osteoarthritis is much more like iron rusting away in the salt air. My approach to osteoarthritis is now based on this latest research and my own observations over many years. I take a “3 legged stool” approach. Firstly we add a range of antioxidants to combat the free radicals attacking joint cells. Secondly we add a range of anti-inflammatory compounds including Omega 3 and a number of plant based antiinflammatory compounds and thirdly specific amounts of joint supporting compounds such as Glucosamine and MSM. It is very important to get personalised and monitored advice because different joints respond to different doses of different compounds and of course everyone is different. Living a ‘golden’ life at Pirongia

Waikato Couple swap livestock for an olive grove

A desire to have more balance in their lives is what led Waikato couple Wayne and Phyllis Bennett into producing olive oil

Wayne and Phyllis Bennett take time out in their Pirongia olive grove

T

he couple’s five-acre lifestyle block BenAlton is located at Pirongia and they have been growing olives for the past 10 years.

“We started with young trees from Marlborough and now have around 551 trees in total,” says Phyllis. She works at a pharmacy during the week but on the weekends is ‘hands-on’ helping husband Wayne who keeps the operation ticking over.

Wayne, a retired can-maker for Fonterra, is chief processor and bottler of the oil marketed under the Living Gold label. The Bennetts grow three Tuscan olive varieties — Pendolino, Frantoio and Leccino.

Over 30 Years Experience

Pendolino is the ‘pollinator’ and Leccino (the most prolific) is the variety used for the oil they produce, process and bottle.

“There’s mowing, weeding and constant pruning,” she says. Olives apparently don’t like wet feet so they produce more fruit during the drier months. Harvesting is done in May and June with the help of family and friends. Before going into olives, the couple ran sheep and beef for the freezer as well as keeping pet animals for their (now adult) children. Phyllis hails from a dry stock farming family in nearby Te Awamutu and Wayne comes from a dairying background in Southland. In the early days, the couple belonged to a co-operative of growers but have since opted to do their own thing, becoming registered as olive growers and processors with the Waipa District Council and purchasing their own press. The oil is sold direct to the public at craft and farmers’ markets, annual markets and around the wider Waikato area.

of looking after their health and wanting more of this kind of food,” Phyllis says. The Bennetts say they supply olive oil from the tree to the table, thanks to the help of a decanter press.

Wayne loads the press with olives

“We sell to people as far south as Pio Pio and north to Hamilton and Cambridge as well as the travelling public,” Phyllis says. She says they’ve managed to build up a strong customer base because they have worked at marketing a good product. “Our’s is 100 percent extra virgin oil and as it tends to go rancid in light, we put it into dark bottles.” The couple say olive oil is now considered a food with health benefits, being good for the heart with its cholesterol lowering and Womega fatty acid properties. “Nowadays people are more aware

Our’s is 100 percent extra virgin oil

The press runs at 3000 rpm (revs per minute), separating solid matter like the stone, flesh and skin from the oil, which is collected in stainless steel buckets. The solids are discarded by the machine automatically. The oil then goes into steel vats where it is charged with nitrogen to protect it from the air, preventing oxydation. The bottles are also treated with the nitrogen to stop the oil going rancid. Around 50 kgs of olives per hour can be processed. Depending on how much fruit there is, the press can run up to 10 hours a day or more at a time. “If there is a lot of fruit, we have to keep processing until it’s all finished so it doesn’t go off,” says Wayne. The olive industry seems to be a supportive crowd as Wayne not only processes his own olives during the week but processes other growers’ olives in the weekends. “We do quality control for a number of other growers because our factory and pack room is registered for it,” he says. Although they love their rural lifestyle which they call a ‘hobby’, on their property named BenAlton, it can get pretty intensive in their olive grove around harvesting time.

Diesel power gains serious traction When Polaris say that their new Ranger Diesel tows more, carries more and seats more, they’re not kidding

Ranger even has a VersaTrac system designed to keep the lawn in one piece despite a tight turning radius. Let’s put it in simple terms. This less-than700kg vehicle can tow a ton. Literally. As for seating and carrying, just take a look at the cleverly ergonomic design of the Ranger diesel. Not only have Polaris put their new model though rigorous real-world testing, they’ve also added some neat extra features to increase comfort and ride while maximising the space you’ve got to haul manpower and machinery. They’ve even included the ability to run electrical power tools from the Ranger’s 55-amp alternator.

Hard enough for military service, tough enough for a hard day’s work on the farm — the Polaris Ranger Diesel

Read between the lines and you’ll discover why Kiwi farmers can expect more from the powerful little UTV workhorse as well — it’s a new model filling out a line-up of machines which have already garnered a mighty reputation. Let’s break it down and see why diesel is such a good choice. First, that pulling power. Here we’re not talking about how attractive the Ranger is (although it has a certain rugged charm), but how much it can haul through the rough stuff. Key to this equation is torque and when you get it. The engineers at Polaris have managed to deliver 90 per cent of the Ranger’s maximum torque low on the RPM curve, at just 1600 revs.

Polaris may be aiming the Ranger diesel at the New Zealand rural market, but just to show how serious they really are, a quick check on the internet reveals that the very same machine is being sold to the military as a recon, recovery and scouting vehicle. There are few tougher theatres of operation than the back-blocks of a Kiwi farm, but surely the battlefield counts as one! UTVs are becoming more and more popular on the farm and Polaris have raised the bar with this diesel powered workhorse. Take one out for a test drive and you’ll see exactly why all that hype exists.

The biggest question asked about any diesel vehicle — on road or off — is how it stacks up against its petrol rivals. Well, the Ranger ticks the very important fuel economy box and, without those road user charges, that’s a real saving. The icing on the cake is that the diesel model has 40 per cent more range, making those long trips and hard days of work that little bit easier.

FA R M W H E E L S

Seventeen years of stable, reliable performance Kiwi farmers are known to demand a lot from their machinery, and none takes more hard knocks than the trusty farm bike With rugged landscapes to traverse and hard work to be done the two-wheeled workhorse of New Zealand’s rural sector has replaced actual horses in most areas, tackling conditions which one would think were almost unimaginable to the big overseas bike manufacturers. That’s why when Suzuki (famous, of course, for their stable of speedy race and road bikes) wanted to design the perfect machine for the Kiwi back country they didn’t try to put it together in a Japanese laboratory. Instead they turned to New Zealand Service Manager Tom Peck, who had a fair idea of what Kiwi farmers

wanted in a bike. The formula contained a big helping of rugged dependability, and this was put to the test around Wanganui’s hillsides and rough terrain — a much tougher proving ground than any test track. Suzuki may have begun their DR200 project with a road-legal dirt bike as the template, but numerous changes were made along the way as the true demands of the Kiwi farm made themselves known. Innovations and additions like a higher redline, an oil cooling system and a change to the gearing made the DR200 — named the Trojan — more practical for the kind of gruelling work it was being engineered for. A big 12-volt headlamp surrounded by protective bars was fitted to beat low light conditions, and a front-to-back anti-corrosion regime prepped the bike for a life semi-submerged in mud and water on the job. They say that the proof of any design is in testing it to destruction, and it’s a safe bet that New Zealand’s working farmers have been trying to break their DR200 Trojans in a

Tangle free fence standards The frustration of untangling electric fence standards has been solved by Geoff Pearson and his invention the PIGGYSTAK™.

Pig-Tail Electric Fence Standard Holder

• Hard to pick up and carry • Constant sort outs for use • Costly to lose, break & bale • Tangled mess, trip & fall hazard

... to SORTED!

The PIGGYSTAK™ stores up to 20 standards of any type. Farmers can also carry one in each hand with a reel to manage up to 40 standards at a time or simply have them hanging off the quad farm bike or ute to break feed with ease.

The PIGGYSTAK™ can be used as a handling device and a convenient tidy way to keep fence standards up off the ground, untangled, always ready to go. Farmers are able to run out their tape and put fence standards in the ground in one operation so it can also save time and effort. Keeping standards stored off the ground also means that they are easily found without the extra expenses and losses for contractors’ broken machinery when they are mowed or bailed up after being lost in the grass. The PIGGYSTAK™ won’t rust so can be left hung on a gate or fence for the season then can be hung up on the shed wall with fence standards when not in use so storage is no longer an issue and shed space maximised. Farmers are now able to have stressfree break feeding as the PIGGYSTAK™

3 for 99 allows tangle free electric fence standard use with easy transporting to and from the paddocks, without the constant frustration for sort outs. Children or women can easily carry 20 standards safely without the risk of pinching the skin on their arms or having a slip and fall problem, as the standards are not attached to them in any way. The PIGGYSTAK™ name was inspired by the jargon term Pigtails or Piggysticks, a term many farmers call their fence standards. Mr Pearson has been using the Piggystaks and fence standards with his ROCKUP Adventure business and property for several years and decided to launch the product at Mystery Creek Fieldays after getting so many positive comments and interest from groundsmen, farmers, schools, equestrian and sports clubs. He has received great feedback from farmers at Fieldays to the point of having to make up additional stock onsite each year to cater to the demand.

The PIGGYSTAK™ has reflective strips to help find it in the dark and is made of high grade aluminium which means it will not rust, is light weight and strong, easy and comfortable to handle.

by David Whitteker, Sales and Operations Manager for NZ Humates Ltd

Humates are now becoming a key ingredient in agriculture boosting soil and stock health and plant nutrition. However buyer beware - good quality humates are not ground-up coal. At NZ Humates we only source high quality humates which are independently tested for their carbon, humic and fulvic content. Natural humates are widely regarded as a premier source of organic matter and are recognised as the most effective of all soil conditioners. They have a high cation exchange capacity and studies have shown that they also possess an excellent water-holding capacity. When humates/humic are mixed with fertiliser, they can dramatically increase mineral availability and uptake, and they are critical in facilitating efficient utilisation of calcium and phosphate.

Humates contain up to 69% organic carbon in their own right, but their carbon-building capacity is largely based on their bio-stimulating capacity. An activated, thriving, microbial population converts stubble and crop residues to organic carbon (humus) at a much faster rate. One ton of humic product is equal to approximately twenty tons of general compost in regard to humus and biological activity. The faster you can convert plant matter to humus, the higher the organic carbon gains. Humates can also have a profound

Maintenance minimises lameness As the season is coming to an end, and with the new season approaching, there are some important things that we need to be taking into consideration in order to maximise our cows’ hoof health through this transitional time. A number of farmers will have cows on winter crops. It is important to introduce cows onto, and wean off, these crops gradually with an ideal transition period of at least two weeks. The time when the cows are coming off the crop is particularly important because they are close to calving and calving induces laminitis, as does a quick change of diet, so there is a bigger risk factor at that time of year. Lameness is a multi-factorial disease. The more factors that are below the mark, the more likely you are to have lameness problems. I appreciate that in some cases it is very difficult to wean cows onto a different diet especially when the cows are away grazing. However, it is important to keep these things in mind — it may be beneficial to use silage as the main part of the diet to help you with this transition. It would be a good idea to consult your nutritionist about the best ways to manage these issues. The end of the season is also a good time to do some maintenance hoof trimming. Hoof trimming does not stop laminitis but it does help to minimise the effects of laminitis. Trimming the cows at this time of the year means that they will have well-shaped feet by the time they calf, and therefore suffer less from calving-induced laminitis.

Remember that if the weight is distributed evenly over the claw then it is less likely for the outer claw to pack up due to the combination of overload and being sick. It is a bit like having a trailer with two really old tyres. When you load this trailer, but put the entire load on one side of the trailer then the tyre on the loaded side is much more likely to burst than the tyre on the other side. If you spread the load evenly over both tyres then you are less likely to end up with a flat tyre. It may still happen but it is less likely. In the same way, if you spread the weight of the cow over the two claws rather than letting the outer claw do most of the work you are less likely to end up with a lame cow. The reason why the outer claw usually does most of the work is because it tends to grow bigger than the inner claw. This is

why cows usually go lame on the outer claw. So if you trim the outer claw back to the same height as the inner claw then you are spreading the weight evenly over the two claws. This may sound like a very simple and easy process, but it actually takes a skilled hoof trimmer to get the balance right. Veehof is in the ideal position to help you with learning how to get the ‘right balance’ — contact us now on 0800 833463 to find out more!

Dairying Calf scours! Remember Rotagen this spring! Calf scours may be all bad, but there’s a good option at hand for clients who end up battling with sick animals this spring. The Rotagen Combo range remains unique as non-toxic, non-withhold vet only antibody treatment for calves affected by common pathogens like Rotavirus 6 and 10, Coronavirus, Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, and or E.coli (K99). New Zealand is the only country in the world where specific antibodies against specific pathogens — (Rotagen Combo) — is a registered animal remedy. The Rotagen Combo range is based on Globigen, a spray-dried egg yolk powder derived from vaccinated chickens which contains IgY’s specific to a particular organism — rotavirus 6 and 10, As the Rotagen products are based on a local gut immunity provided by immunoglobulins, there is no issue with toxicity and no withholding period. The product can be used with calves of any age and treatment can be initiated at any stage of infection. It can be used to both prevent and treat specific calf scours. A recent addition to the range is Rotagen Crypto, a cryptosporidium specific

treatment for calves. Approved by the ACVM as an aid in the prevention and treatment of calf scours caused by cryptosporidium, this is available as a stand-alone product without the addition of rotavirus. This is particularly useful in cases where the herd has been vaccinated for rotavirus, but the farm has a history of cryptosporidium parvum scours in their calves. Calves of any age or weight can be treated at the same dosage rate. For prevention, the recommended dose is 10 grams per calf per day for five days. For treatment, dose calves with 10 g twice daily for the first day, then 5 g twice daily for three to seven days. Appropriate rehydration is essential and Rotagen can be used in conjunction with electrolytes or milk feeding.

Fluid Fertilisers are the way forward by Dr Bert Quin, fertiliser and soil fertility consultant

Fluid fertilisers are defined in New Zealand as high-solids products containing only 10–20% water (just enough to allow them to be kept agitated and spread through specialised equipment) Unlike what are commercially defined as ‘fpa’ (fine particle application) in which all ingredients are finely ground regardless of benefit and cost, each individual ingredient in fluid fertilisers is present in a range of particle sizes to suit that nutrient. The main factors deciding the particle size range chosen for each nutrient are (a) whether it is possible and intended for some or all of that nutrient to be taken up through the leaves, as in a foliar fertiliser, and (b) what sizing will allow passage of the particular ingredient through the plant canopy to the soil, with as many individual particles as possible, with a totally even spread, to optimise nutrient uptake. ‘Liquid’ fertilisers got a deservedly bad name in New Zealand beginning in the 1980s, because of blatantly dishonest and misleading claims that the

tiny amounts of nutrient being applied per hectare at the rates recommended by the seller would maintain production. Typically, these products were applying less than one kg/ha of the key nutrients, and trivial amounts of trace elements. They made huge profits for their suppliers, but cost farmers dearly. Several such companies added growth promotants and ‘greening’ agents to their products, to create an impressive but fleeting visual benefit. This type of con has arisen again recently, but wrapped in a more sophisticated, single-invoice ‘package’ of on-farm ‘advice’ and application. Nutrient application rates remain massively below maintenance requirements. Unfortunately, this has distracted attention from the enormous

benefits of true fluid fertilisers, as described above. Fluid fertilisers have all the advantages of sold fertilisers — relatively low cost products designed to maintain and improve soil fertility and plant growth — but avoid their disadvantages of dust, segregation of components during handling, transport and spreading, and entry of nutrients into waterways. In addition, fluid fertilisers offer a combination of important advantages — extremely accurate placement (thereby allowing deposition of nutrients into waterways to be avoided), extremely even coverage of much smaller-sized

particles than granules, optimising both leaf and root uptake, and the easy addition of both solid and liquid additives, additional nutrients, seed and insecticide. In particular, the additives can include cutting-edge products that greatly increase both P and N efficiency and reduce losses. For all these reasons, I believe that ‘fluids’ are the way to go. The water content is simply the carrier, the means to ensure that the nutrients and additives required to optimise productivity on each given farm can be applied in the most cost-effective manner, in any terrain, in any weather.

Massey University third-year vet students recently launched their annual Barely There calendar by Denise Gunn

Massey University third-year vet students launched their annual Barely There calendar recently with proceeds to go towards their half-year trip and the New Zealand Wildlife Health Centre at the university’s teaching hospital The calendar, which dates from July 2012 — June 2013, features around 70 vet students, posing nude or semi-nude in agricultural settings with strategicallyplaced animals or objects to cover up private parts.

Four photographers were appointed to take photos at several locations which included a shearing shed, alpaca and pig farms, riding stables, netball courts, the Manawatu Gorge, Staglands Wildlife Reserve near Wellington, a Belgian Blue farm in Hawke’s Bay and the Tui Brewery at Mangatinoka. Third year vet student Abby Sine said students undertake practical work on farms in the area early on in the vet programme. “A lot of the photo-shoot locations were a result of contacts that students had with local farmers.” The calendar concept was initiated seven years ago as a fundraiser and celebration for students reaching the half-way point in pursuit of a veterinary degree.

Ms Sine said students began talking about the theme of the calendar late last year and voted on it.

She said students found posing for the calendar to be a mixture of nerves and excitement. “I think people were pretty nervous but once they got over the initial shock of being naked, they started to relax and have fun.”

Students bare all for calendar

Every year 10 percent of proceeds from calendar sales are donated to a chosen charity. This year the New Zealand Wildlife Health Centre (NZWHC), where sick and injured wildlife are treated, will be the recipient. The centre also aids in the recovery of New Zealand’s native birds and are the first responders to oil spill scenes like the recent Rena disaster. “Usually a little extra is thrown in as well, so the more calendars we sell, the more we can help support a fantastic organisation such as NZWHC,” said Ms Sine. Last year’s calendar sales raised over $3,000 for SPCA Canterbury. Calendars can be ordered through www.vetcalendar.co.nz at a cost of $15 plus postage or purchased from any Massey University third-year vet student.
