The Waikato Regional Council’s (WRC) major new project dubbed ‘The Ripple Effect’, aims to boost community and individual involvement in environmental initiatives. WRC chairman, Peter Buckley, said people all over the Waikato are working to create a healthy environment. “At the heart of ‘The Ripple Effect’ is the idea that when you take action, at home or in your community, you create a ripple that contributes to something bigger, in this case, a healthy environment.” Through the creation of ‘The Ripple Effect’ website, environmental improvement project co-ordinators can be linked with volunteers wanting to become involved. Links to support organisations, environmental and conservation funding sources, along with useful project monitoring tools are also available. Groups looking for volunteers or funders are able to promote their project on the website, while those wanting to get involved can sign up to projects that interest them. The website also currently features around 60 groups working to make a difference to the region’s water quality. An online calendar displaying upcoming environmental projects in the Waikato requiring volunteers is regularly updated. WRC’s communications manager, Karen Bennett, said more groups will be added over the next few weeks. She said it is also hoped others will start adding their own stories to celebrate those people throughout the region who are helping to protect places, spaces and species. “Education and information components of the website will include

Young farmers fight for charity

by Denise Gunn

Young farmers across the region, along with several from the Taranaki and Manawatu, have been undergoing a rigorous training schedule for the past few months in preparation for a fight for charity. The Young Farmers Fight Night for Charity initiative began when a couple of young farmers discussed the concept over a few beers late one evening. Rather than holding a small event in a haybarn, the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Young Farmers organising group decided they could turn the event into a fundraiser for charity. Last year the inaugural event saw match contenders from across the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region trying the sport and taking part. Young Farmers upper North Island field officer, Casey Huffstutler, said the event has been opened up to include young farmers from other regions this year. Twelve matches will take place during the evening and boxers will square off in a series of three-round boxing bouts.

Angora rabbit breeder spins own yarn by Denise Gunn

It was love at first sight when Kathryn Roper was first introduced to the English Angora rabbit. From that meeting, around 30 years ago, Kathryn became hooked on the breed.

t is believed Angora rabbits date back to the early 18th century — around 1723. Sightseeing sailors pulled into the Turkish port of Angora, now known as Ankara, and saw indigenous women wearing shawls unlike any they had previously seen. They discovered the fine wool in the shawls came from the Angora rabbit. As a keen spinner, Kathryn decided that to have a consistent supply of the

The fibre regrows very quickly, averaging one centimetre or more a month. An adult English Angora rabbit harvests 200 grams of fibre on average every four months. A rabbit is considered to be fully mature when it reaches 10 months of age. As well as selling the fibre to spinners and craftspeople, Kathryn also uses it extensively in the garments she produces. “I enjoy creating a luxurious looking garment, which is far lighter to wear than most other fibres used in garment making. “It is noted as being eight times warmer since Angora is a thermal hollow fibre.” Kathryn enjoys breeding the English Angora to contribute to the commercial Kathryn’s efforts with breeding the English Angora have been recognised by international judges

ventilated hutch, on an elevated floor of small square mesh, with a small carpet or vinyl mat provided for them to sit on if they so desire,” she said. Twice-weekly grooming is required when the rabbits are in full fleece. If they are newly clipped, grooming once a week is sufficient. Kathryn said the fibre is harvested every four months but this depends on the individual rabbit’s fibre growth rate. “Fibre can be harvested in two ways; by plucking where you remove two thirds of the coat and leave some behind, or you can clip the bunny. “For fibre spinning bunnies, it is quicker to clip. “Clipping by electric shears is the more hazardous method in my opinion, as the bunny has many skin folds, and

it is very easy to nick the skin.” The English and French Angora rabbits release a hormone which enables the fibre to pull free without causing pain to the rabbit. Kathryn recommends using a sharp pair of scissors to clip the rabbits, along with patience and a steady hand. Show rabbits are better plucked to ensure a uniform regrowth. “Both methods of harvesting the fibre ensure the bunny has some fibre left on its body to keep it warm.”

It is noted as being eight times warmer since Angora is a thermal hollow fibre

“Numerous show awards attained under international judges over a period of time with different breeds of rabbits was very satisfying, as it represented many hours of preparation and years of selective breeding,” she said. As a spinning tutor and regular guest speaker on the English Angora, Kathryn especially focusses on working and creating with Angora fibre. She also plans to write a book on the English Angora rabbit in New Zealand.

A vintner’s

life

Dr Rainer Eschenbruch

by Sheri O’Neill

A Waikato scientist at the cutting edge of winemaking research throughout the growth years of New Zealand’s wine industry has retired gracefully into the vintner’s life himself.

D

r Rainer Eschenbruch’s boutique winery, Lanes End, produces around 3,000 bottles a year from his two acre organic vineyard, Birchwood Lane, on the outskirts of Hamilton. Waikato is not renowned for being a wine area, but Rainer says that all places can produce wine successfully if the right grape is matched to the land. And he should know. German-born Rainer arrived in New Zealand in 1973 on a governmental research fellowship based at the Te Kauwhata Viticultural Research station, later becoming responsible for

all oenological projects until its closure in 1987. Brought up on a mixed farm near the Dutch border, Rainer says he had planned for a degree in agriculture. “But by the time I got to university I could see no future in farming in Europe, particularly not in Germany, so I did biology, thinking it could be applied to agricultural research.” Wine had not played much part in his life previously. “My family only drank wine at Easter and Christmas — very sweet, lollypop wine.” But an introduction to wine research though his Masters’

supervisor led to a PhD, and the science of wine became his passion. Four years at a wine research institute in South Africa followed. “But I couldn’t stand apartheid,” he says, “so when the fellowship came up I thought, oh ho, New Zealand has viticulture and winemaking!” “I had an impression of New Zealand as somewhere extraordinary. But on first arrival I thought it not that different to Europe. It took a year or two to understand the real nature of the country, and I slowly learned to appreciate the differences.”

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it.This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs.Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be

operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce SeptiCure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

WAIKATO FArmIng LIFesTyLes June 2013 Rainer’s wife did not settle and went back to Germany with their young son, but Rainer remained, eventually remarrying. It was an exciting time for wine, and he was in the thick of it. “Te Kauwhata was an advisory body. Lots of experimental wines of endless varieties, experiments with temperature, fermentation, different yeasts — you learned a lot.” Micro-vinification — making wine in small quantities — meant the experiments themselves were a challenge, but provided a good grounding in wine and a close relationship with the burgeoning wine industry. “We could describe problems and offer solutions, which led to relationships with every winemaker in the country. My staff and I would pack up all the experimental wines and take them out to the regions to share.” After Te Kauwhata’s closure, Rainer was winemaker for Rongopai Wines before moving into consulting. He says after the Muldoon years the research focus underwent a fundamental shift. “The science practiced previously was open and cooperative, with a long-term approach. Science needs time, but the priority now is making large amounts of money instantly.” He bought the Tamahere land in 1998, and with some trial and error took ten years to establish the vineyard. He says although his specialty was the making of wine, all his working life viticultural considerations had been part of determining wine outcomes, so the leap was not a large one. Birchwood Lane vineyard grows Pinot Noir, Malbec and Voigner varieties, using organic and biodynamic principles without herbicides, fungicides or insecticides. Rainer says he finds it hugely disturbing what humans are doing to their environment, and tries to deal with it by treating his own land properly. The wine is sold exclusively through local markets and a loyal client base. “It took a while — I’m sure people thought ‘here comes that funny guy with his bottles of wine’ — but now people really like the wine. I’m not sure if it is so successful only because of the organic regime.

Healthy blood vessels Today we want to look at the importance of maintaining good circulation by ensuring the walls of your blood vessels allow for good blood flow at normal levels of blood pressure. If blood vessels lose their elasticity they can offer greater resistance to circulating blood which requires the heart to pump harder to achieve good circulation. Compare your blood vessels with a garden hose. The green plastic is supple allowing for flexibility while the white webbing provides strength. As the hose ages it becomes less flexible and may crack and leak. This is much like how free radicals damage elastin and collagen proteins causing stiffness and weakness in blood vessels.

I think a point of difference is I let it develop naturally. I just leave the juice alone and the wine comes out as nature would make it.” At 74, he says he is starting to slow down. “All our lives we run about like idiots, but you get to where you just want some rest. If you have always been active in mind, age will point you in the direction of closure. You have to come to terms with your life, because you are standing on the firing line and there’s no more denying it.” This summer’s drought has provided a particularly good vintage. “The best ever,” says Rainer, “everybody has his day in the sun.” With the young wines now all safely barrelled in the cellar, Rainer will watch over their development. “Nurturing,” he says, “with a little confidence and trust.”

The loss of elasticity and subsequent stiffening of major blood vessels is often caused by reductions in the function of elastic fibres or the cross-linking of supporting collagen fibres. This loss of elasticity is often a contributor to hypertension. Primary Hypertension is the name for elevated blood pressure where there is no specific cause. Research does suggest that free radicals (oxidative stress) play a role in damaging blood vessels thus causing an increase in blood pressure. A paper published in Hypertension Research

(Rodrigo, 2007) compared free radical activity in 30 people with primary hypertension compared with 30 healthy people. The study confirmed that markers of oxidative stress were significantly higher in those with hypertension. Over the years I have observed many people improve their blood pressure using nutritional therapy. With diet we want to target foods high in compounds called polyphenols and vitamin C. I always add antioxidant supplement complexes that are high in grape seed OPC’s, high in vitamin C and other complementary compounds. While results vary a lot, some people, especially those with slightly elevated blood pressure can notice a return to more normal levels of blood pressure. Chains of Bureaucracy

Over the past few months I have spent a lot of time visiting farmers in both North Island and South Island and I see discontent, worry and stress building up as councils and their underlings distance themselves from farmers with their petty rules and unbending nonsensical regulations. Agriculture, horticulture, viticulture and forestry are our main exports and these industries are holding New Zealand together. Markets are tough out there, so why is our infernal bureaucracy endeavouring to penalise the country internally. What’s their game? It’s our taxes that are keeping these clones in a job and they are biting the hand that feeds them. Not only that but they’re biting the wrong hand. Farmers are taking all the abuse and blame for the erosion of our soils and pollution of our food and water which the bureaucrats believe is technically correct. However, from my perspective this is grossly incorrect. In all articles written over the past 10 years the main pollutants targeted in farming terms are superphosphate and artificial nitrogen (urea). In recent times chemical sprays are also being targeted. Now, you cannot blame the farmer for using agrochemical products, the blame sits squarely on the shoulders of the chemical industry. In New Zealand the NPK Balance Sheet Theory has been reiterated as soil science for the past 60 years, solidly influenced by the phosphate company. It has nothing to do with soil science. The perpetrator of the Balance Sheet Theory was Justus Von Liebig who appraised the minerals left after incinerating plants, only nding N, P and K, he stated that this was all you need to grow. Before his death he declared that this theory was incorrect as he had not considered all other essential minerals or the micro-organisms in the soil, which incidentally are being annihilated by chemical production. In the USDA Agriculture year book, 1957 pages 3 and 7 the US Department of Agriculture declared the balance sheet theory to be false. The balance sheet theory has been operating for over 170 years, unchanged, causing soil erosion, soil pollution and pollution of food and water. One would think that all councils and environmental agencies would be fully aware of where the pollution is coming from. Why are farmers being targeted? Wouldn’t it make sense for the councils to target the cause of the problem — the manufacture and marketing of super phosphate and urea? For the past 450 million years, apparently that’s when the first plants appeared on our planet, plants in conjunction with micro-organisms have been fixing their nitrogen needs directly out of the atmosphere. Approximately, seventy six percent of our atmosphere is nitrogen. According to Dr Barry Commoner from Washington University, “evidence suggests that in the presence of artificial nitrogen, the natural fixation of nitrogen from the air by soil bacteria stops and as a result it is increasingly difficult for farmers to give up the use of the artificial product. Like addictive drugs, artificial nitrogen creates its own demand.” (Secret Life of Plants, Tompkin & Bird, 1973, pg 221). Over the past few months I have spent a lot of time visiting farmers in both North Island and South Island and I see discontent, worry and stress building up as councils and their underlings distance themselves from farmers with their

petty rules and unbending nonsensical regulations. More and more farmers today are moving away from artificial nitrogen by increasing their soil biology and fixing all their nitrogen requirements for free. The phosphate requirement for plants is 0.2 percent this requirement can easily be satisfied through the use of natural products such as rockdust and guano. According to Dr Morgan Williams report in 2004 our farmland on average contains 1.7 tonne of phosphate per hectare available via micro-organisms. A Ruakura report, Bulletin #409 published by the Crown stated “we have calculated that 1% is a very generous allowance for the remaining 9 to 10% of phosphorus in super phosphate available to plants as nutrients left after considering the losses from immobilisation, surface runoff and leaching.” No wonder there is plenty of phosphate in our soils and waters.

Small size, big value, huge street appeal

by Andy Bryenton

Mitsubishi’s new Mirage has been an instant hit in New Zealand, and that’s not all down to the retro chic appeal of its badge. Because while a large number of us remember owning or driving in the old Mirage (a bit of a 1980s’ classic, in its own way), the latest reincarnation of Mitsubishi’s flagship small car ticks all the boxes, paring away the fat to leave a simple, functional, and surprisingly fun little vehicle for a price well within the reach of those who would usually only buy second hand. Take the interior, for example. Here you’ll find ample room despite the car’s diminutive footprint, and auto essentials like air conditioning, a stereo with simple to master controls, and even hands free connectivity for your mobile. But you’ll find no hint of excess — the Mirage

looks tidy and slick, with glossy black and silver accents, but it’s not a mobile appliance store. The controls are so simple and well laid out that it becomes instantly comfortable to reach for the indicator or the gear shift, and visibility all round is great, meaning that backing up and parking are a breeze. On the road a tap of the accelerator doesn’t elicit a V8 growl, but rather a burbling purr and smooth acceleration. While it’s obvious that you’re not behind the wheel of Mitsubishi’s rally-smashing Evo X, there’s also much more power than you would expect from the three cylinders, 1200cc mill beneath the hood. Handling is smooth rather than sharp as well, as

the Mirage delivers a comfortable driving experience through rush hour traffic. Don’t think it’s just for the city, though — this machine will cruise at 100kph comfortably as well, while delivering incredible fuel economy. The best part, though — the Mirage’s biggest appeal — is its looks. This is a small, economical and inexpensive car

which looks fresh, interesting and fun, especially in the bright green which I tested. Then again, the real appeal for you might be the price. Or Mitsubishi’s 5 and 10 year warranties. Or, indeed, the fact that this sub-20k car is built by one of the most reliable brands in the industry.

Diesel power tackles tough terrain by Andy Bryenton

vehicle protection and styling

Polaris have forged a name for themselves both here and overseas with rugged, dependable working vehicles, able to tackle any kind of terrain and any challenge. With applications in farming, forestry, search and rescue and even in the most demanding military theatres of war, this brand is renowned for delivering simple, effective power-on-the-ground solutions. Here in New Zealand it’s farmers who make up the majority of Polaris buyers — and we’ve taken to their cost effective quad bikes and tough UTV sideby-sides with gusto. One of the highlights of their model range, and still a fresh idea after a few seasons on the market is the Ranger

Diesel — touted as the best thing to happen to Kiwi agriculture since the introduction of the border collie or the swanndri. That’s because this powerful little machine is big on space, and big on guts. Try over 900 kilos of towing capacity and almost 700kg load — all from a vehicle small and nimble enough to go where a big ute simply can’t! Add into the mix the fact that this Polaris (identical in shape and practicality to the petrol Ranger

800) runs on cheap, farm-accessible diesel, and you have a winning combo. Plus, with up to six seats available in its large-chassis format, there’s room for a hard working crew, the tools, the dog, and a chilly bin for refreshments too!

Forestry Report

NORTHERN FOREST PRODUCTS

It is a story of onwards and upward but uncertainty underlies the log markets and while price gains are still being achieved, these are tentative and the bullrun may be running out of fizz. If there are further price increases from here, then be on guard as a more spectacular price collapse may follow. Chinese inventory is still high following their New Year break but matched with high demand, log inventory is steadily falling. The onset of the hot season may be the catalyst to reduce the Dragon’s appetite and when sentiment goes south so might the prices. But at the present time forest owners in New Zealand continue to ride the wave. Closer to home, sawmills have been forced to increase log prices to match, which will be tough for some, but this may increase sawmillers’ collective resolve to hold onto recent increases in sawn timber prices. If you are fortunate enough to be harvesting your woodlot right now, the prolonged dry is your best friend and you will be impressed with your returns. The really big event in the woodlot owners’ calendar last month was the Forest Owners Referendum on whether a compulsory levy should be introduced of 27 cents per tonne or cubic metre for all forest products removed from a ‘qualifying’ forest. A ‘qualifying’ forest is

owned by a forest owner (or entity) with more than 4Ha of forest and harvests wood products from the forest. Wood products will mostly be logs, but also include binwood, residue and wood chips. A ‘yes’ vote by more than 50% of forest owners will be the mandate for the Ministry of Primary Industries to legislate the levy under The Commodity Levies Act (1990) which enables an industry organisation to seek a compulsory levy on all producers of a commodity. Their are restrictions on how that money may be used and trading or commercial activities are excluded. To continue the levy beyond six years, another referendum is required. The result of the referendum will be interesting, as those organisations promoting the levy already own 80% of the forests but represent only 25% of the participants. The levy will be administered by a group to be formed called the ‘Forest Growers Levy Trust’ (FGLT). If the levy does come into effect, the first challenge for the FGLT will be to

enforce and collect the levy. This is sure to be an expensive exercise and may consume a big chunk of the levy income. The other challenge will be to demonstrate the real benefits that accrue to forest owners who are paying the levy when some of those benefits already exist and may have been funded by the Government. On the ETS front, New Zealand’s withdrawal from Kyoto changes the dynamic of this market and the sentiment is firmly buy and hold. So now is a good time to lock in gains if you have already sold NZUs at higher prices and still face future liabilities. If you have any comments or questions then email enquiry@nfp.co.nz.

Certified Builders

LBPs are designers, carpenters, brick and blocklayers, roofers, external plasterers, site and foundations specialists who have been assessed to be competent to carry out work essential to a residential building's structure or weathertightness. Being licensed means you must maintain your skills and knowledge. A licensed building practitioner (LBP) can be identified by producing their photo ID license card and by checking their details against the public register. If you are the homeowner it is your responsibility to make certain that the people you are using are licensed to do the work.

ALL Certified Builders are also Licensed Building Practitioners. But they have also accessed further training and are backed up by a nationwide organisation of professional builders who offer added benefits to the customer. “If you are a Certified Builder it means you are totally committed to quality and craftsmanship,” says the organisation’s website. 92 Bruce Berquist Drive “To start with all Certified Te Awamutu Builders begin their careers P. 07 871 6188 by obtaining a professional F. 07 871 6128 trade qualification, office@ntjoinery.co.nz learning the right way, the www.ntjoinery.co.nz first time from a trade qualified craftsman.” The Certified Builders’ Homefirst Builders Guarantee is the only one that includes all of the following features, covering customers for: • build completion

Qualifications made easy • structural defects (up to 10yrs) • accommodation, removal & storage allowance • underwritten by a Standard & Poor’s–rated, independent specialist insurer

Master Builders ALL Master Builders are also Licensed Building Practitioners. To be a Registered Master Builder, building experience, trade or professional qualifications and practical management experience are assessed. Workmanship is inspected and previous clients contacted, to ensure the applicant’s work is of a high standard and has satisfied clients’ expectations. In addition applicants must provide evidence of financial responsibility with written references from their bank, accountant and building material suppliers.

Plumbers, Drainlayers and Gas fitters Plumbers, drainlayers and gas fitters are types of LBP too.

It’s very important to be aware that persons carrying out sanitary plumbing, gas fitting and drainlaying work must be authorised by the relevant plumbers, gas fitters and drainlayers board to do so. The message is simple — ask a plumber, gas fitter or drainlayer for their authorisation card and if they can’t produce one, call the Board on 0800 743 262 to check they are authorised. Certain plumbing and drainlaying work may be required to undergo a building inspection, or for the certifier to issue a producer statement for their work.

Electricians These specialist tradespeople have their own specific qualification which permits them to undertake electrical work on your home. Needless to say, extensive training is required for electrical safety to be maintained! Make sure your electrician is fully qualified, as it is illegal to contract an unauthorised person to undertake this kind of work — as well as very dangerous!

Architects Also carry LBP accreditation, and are key to ensuring your build gets off to a great start. A qualified architect and designer will often liaise with builders to discuss materials, key aspects of the structure and how it’s all going to come together. Your first port of call when designing a unique home.

Lameness and laminitis education We know now that lameness is caused by laminitis, but what do we do about it? I am not yet convinced that the majority of New Zealand dairy farmers really believe that we have laminitis in this country. I still come across many farmers who are surprised at the effects of laminitis within their herd.

Most farmers are still talking about stone bruises and pointing out to me where in the yard or track their lame cows come from. Even if the evidence shows differently it seems hard for people to change their attitude towards physical damage.

*Conditions may apply

Some of the things that I am talking about here are the fact that most cows have higher outside claws than inside claws. The horn tissue in the outer claw is thicker than the inner claw and therefore the live tissue in that outer claw is better protected from outside forces — just as soldiers are better protected from flying bullets in an army tank with good thick steel compared to a tin shell like our cars — yet most

of the so called ‘stone bruises’ (which are not actually stone bruises at all) are in the outer claw. Or the fact that many of the haemorrhages and defects are symmetrical in left and right leg claws. Or the fact that many beef cows have haemorrhage in their claws yet they are not being pushed over tracks at all — they don’t even know what a stone looks like. So I think that we have still got a lot of work to do to get farmers educated. I see my primary role as being a professional hoof trimmer and teacher in that area. With that comes the need to teach people the recognition of different claw diseases. Laminitis is one of those diseases and I can make farmers aware of the existence of this disease here in New Zealand and help them to understand what they can do from a hoof trimming point of view to minimise it.

Dairying Kiwi company scoops international award for dairy effluent ponds Waikato based pond lining company, Pondco, have beaten entrants from around the world to win the International Association of Geosynthetic Installers (IAGI) Small Project award category.

Effluent Ponds Pondco Ltd specialise in custom design and built FDE Ponds to suit your farm, your location, your needs and requirements.

Pondco Centroid FDE Ponds combine the best products and design to make your pond last!

Pondco FDE Ponds are for the “Do it Once, Do it Right“ Farms. IAGI made the announcement at the recent Geosynthetics 2013 conference held in April at Long Beach, California. Pondco Ltd submitted a portfolio of dairy effluent pond projects which they designed and synthetically lined in the central North Island for dairy farms which were upgrading their on farm dairy effluent management systems. The award should assure farmers that the Centroid Farm Dairy Effluent (FDE) ponds being built and lined by Pondco are up to or exceeding international standards. Mr Vaughan Podbielski, Firestone Liners product manager for Cosio Industries said “DairyNZ and regional councils combined with companies like Fonterra, Synlait amongst others, have been doing a lot of work to create awareness and promote the need for constructing and sealing

dairy effluent ponds to international best practice standards, in order to maintain sustainability and protect the environment.” He went on to say, “With DairyNZ driving and sponsoring the formalising and introduction of international best practice standards into New Zealand under the IPENZ Farm Dairy Effluent Practice Note 21, farmers can take comfort in the fact that companies which follow these standards will deliver a product of the very highest standard.” Mr Hamish Forbes of Pondco said “We are very pleased to receive this award which recognises our work to deliver effluent ponds of the very highest standard. The standard of pond lining in general has been raised significantly when compared to what was taking place five years ago.”

Rotagen Combo is increasingly being used as a fence at the top of the cliff rather than the ambulance at the bottom when dealing with calf scours. That’s the message from veterinary supply company Vetpak, which says there was a noticeable lift last season in the number of farmers using this unique product as a preventative option rather than just as a treatment.

Preventative use of Rotagen Combo gaining momentum

www.farminglifestyles.co.nz

Farmers with small numbers of calves from un-vaccinated herds or calf rearers who were unsure of their animals’ immune or colostrum intake status were giving a five day course of Rotagen as soon as the calves reached the rearing shed. If dairy farmers had elected not to vaccinate for Rotavirus this gave them and their vet an opportunity to offer some protection against Rotavirus to their heifer replacement calves. The Rotagen Combo range remains unique as non-toxic, non-withhold vet only antibody treatment for calves affected by common pathogens.

“Time and again we hear from farmers that it can make a big difference when dealing with the stress of a scours outbreak.” The Rotagen combo range is based on Globigen, a spray-dried egg yolk powder derived from vaccinated chickens which contains IgY’s specific to a particular organism — rotavirus 6 and 10, coronavirus, salmonella, cryptosporidium, and E.coli (K99).

“Globigen is made by vaccinating high health status flocks against a specific pathogen. The hen then passes maternal immunoglobulins from serum to the egg yolk which is collected, then spray-dried, heat-treated and standardised to a determined IgY titre. This is then formulated into a Rotagen combination product by Vetpak here in NZ. Any Rotagen combination of the above IgY’s can be produced on request to meet a specific challenge.” The IgY antibodies provide a passive immunity effect in the gut in the same way bovine colostrum would. “Studies have shown that IgY’s successfully passes through the gastro intestinal tract in an active form and are not altered by the digestive process. Their ability to bind to antigens is maintained within the local gut.” As the Rotagen products are based on a local gut immunity provided by immunoglobulins, there is no issue with toxicity and no withholding period. The product can be used with calves of any age and treatment can be initiated at any stage of infection. Calves of any age or weight can be treated at the same dosage rate. For prevention, the recommended dose is 10 grams per calf per day for five days. For treatment, farmers should dose calves with 10 g twice daily for the first day, then 5 g twice daily for three to seven days. Appropriate rehydration is essential and Rotagen can be used in conjunction with electrolytes or milk feeding. For more detail phone Vetpak on 07 870 2024. Registered pursuant to the ACVM Act 1997. Community activity at Global Veterinary services Last Wednesday we had a great morning at the clinic with Jonathan Short reading his new book ‘Devon the dogs adventure’, that he has illustrated and written, to 25 local preschool children from New Beginnings in Gordonton. to listen to George the dogs’ heart. Following this Andrew another of the vets from the clinic, who works at the zoo, had a short chat about the zoo and some of the animals there. The children then enjoyed homemade guide dog shaped cookies and tiny cupcakes, before heading back to preschool.

The children were also very interested in the animals at the clinic for the morning, two rabbits, a dog and two cats. Theo, one of the veterinarians at the clinic chatted with the children after the book reading answering questions about animals and about being a vet. The children enjoyed using the stethoscope
