Winston Peters, Minister for Racing
“This bill is an important first step. However, while the race has begun, we are still far from the finish line,” says Minister for Racing Winston Peters. The bill, which comes into force on July 1, opens the starting gate for the transition of the New Zealand Racing Industry into a financially sustainable future. It reconstitutes the New Zealand Racing Board as the Racing Industry Transition Agency. RITA will have a new membership and a legislative mandate to manage the changes needed to revitalise the industry as well as to carry out business-as-usual functions. The bill also addresses the industry’s need for additional revenue. The totalisator duty currently paid to the Crown will be phased out, with the revenue returned to the industry and a portion retained for harm minimisation. It also introduces two new charges on overseas betting operators to help ensure they contribute to the New
Zealand racing and sports codes from which they benefit. RITA will be permitted to offer betting on a wider range of sports where an agreement is reached with Sport New Zealand. The formula for distributing payments to sporting and racing codes will be placed into regulations, so they can be more readily changed when needed by the industry. Mr Peters intends to introduce a second bill later this year to build on these initial reforms. It will establish post-transition governance arrangements, and other changes deemed necessary to ensure the revitalisation of the industry. “As a whole, these reforms serve to emphasise the value of racing in New Zealand,” Mr Peters says. “The Racing Reform bill lays out an opportunity to deliver real results, to grow this industry for the benefit of our regions, our communities and our economy.”

Recognising display efforts A number of Fieldays exhibitors were awarded for their ingenuity in the creation of their sites for the Fieldays 2019 Exhibitor Site Awards. Sixteen volunteer judges assessed the overall attractiveness of the sites, experience-enhancing interactive elements, recognisable branding and signage, and a clear focus on customer service. Two senior managers from sponsor Xero then judged the finalists use of innovation, education, technology, sustainability and the Fieldays theme. The Fieldays 2019 Supreme Site Award and Best Agribusiness Indoor Site Award, were won by four different organisations operating under Crown Research Institutes. A completely unique winner for this year’s category was shared by the AgResearch team, Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, Scion and ESR. “Where this site really excelled was the way, in which they perfectly integrated with this year’s overarching theme of Cultivating Value.” said key accounts and sales manager and coordinator of the site awards, David Natzke. The judges saw a direct connection to the theme with the site’s clean, bright and interactive design, which attracted visitors of all ages to learn a little more about the research, the institutes conduct. This year, the Agribusiness Outdoor Site Award was separated into three

Matt Dawson is pursuing a career in the dairy industry and won the Waikato Dairy Trainee of the Year title at the recent Dairy Industry Awards.
“M
y grandpa was a firstgeneration farmer who brought two farms, and my dad purchased them off him. We grew up on one of them, and two of my four brothers are also farmers now,” says Matt. Dad has 350 purebred Friesian cows, and when I was younger, I reared the calves, drove tractors, helped with cropping and relief milked on weekends during high school. Next season my wife Tayla and I will work for dad as low order sharemilkers. I always looked up to him when I was growing up. At high school, I took agriculture class, and that is when I knew farming was the career I really wanted because it was the one class that I looked forward to.”
Matt is passionate about ensuring his stock are fully fed. “Fully feeding your cows all year round and getting high production from each cow is important to me. If I see a deficit coming, I make a plan to fill the gap with supplements. I work out the best way to ensure every cow has sufficient feed. I weigh up whether or not to dry the cows off, so others have enough feed while still getting enough pasture for target cover for calving. “We use maize silage and at present are feeding 10–12kg per cow per day to make sure we can grow enough grass for calving. We mix urea in for protein for milk production to supplement the maize. Our aim is really full springers and

dry cows so when they calve they have more room for pasture when milking. They can eat up to 25kg rather than 20kg each — it is about building up the capacity in the cows. We use straw as well, mainly for dry cows and springers, with the theory that it is a low energy diet, so their metabolics are stable. If the metabolics are too high, you end up with issues at calving. Next season we will have a tight calving spread as it was a six week mating period — the first two to three weeks will be intensive. “We milk twice a day all year round. I do all our feed management, and I judge by eye with farm rides. I used to do a lot of farm walks and learnt from there.” Matt is also in charge of the farm irrigator system. “This farm has 620 cows and is 230ha with a 70ha effluent block. We irrigate the shed and feed pad effluent and have a 90-day storage pond with three irrigators. They cover a large area and spread the nutrients evenly, which is great for grass growth. “I love working with the cows. Every cow has its own personality, and I like spending one on one time with them in the shed. When you move them to new grass and stuff, they get excited, and you know they are happy. Number 17 is the pet. She is a bit stubborn when she wants a pat and a scratch and won’t move. She is a heifer and first-time calver this year and has accomplished more than 400 milk solids this season. “I enjoyed participating in the Dairy Industry Awards and receiving the feedback from the judges on my abilities. I met a lot of people that I

Staying connected to local farmers and joining discussion groups is one way Matt stays positive am able to network with. Being around like-minded people helps you to learn and gain more knowledge. Meeting the sponsors was great because you get to build relationships with them for the future. Ecolab offered to help me with shed detergents, and I sat with the Westpac area managers. “They check we are financially where we want to be and can help with budgeting and suggest finance options if required. “Our parents are very supportive and always back us. When times are
hard, the most important thing is to be positive. You are not going to be stuck where you are because things always bounce back. “I am employed by Henri Pennings — he is a contract milker. Anything I need help with he coaches me and gives me options, he is great to work for. “I get along to local discussion groups and have a lot of chats with my brothers, my dad and the locals around me. We meet up, have pizza and always help each other with tyre stacks and stuff like that.”

THE BEAUTY BY ANN VAN ENGELEN MARTIN AND STEPHANIE LYNCH REPRESENT THE BEAUTY OF WAIKATO’S VAST VARIETY OF FLORA, THROUGH THEIR SMALL FAMILY BUSINESS, SWEETREE HONEY.
“O
ur different varieties of honey reflect the area and the seasons our bees worked their magic. From the candy and toffee flavour of the Hakarimata to the gorgeous zesty tones of Marokopa Spring — there is a Sweetree honey to suit all tastes,” says Stephanie. “Martin has been around bees since childhood. His grandfather, uncles and father kept them as a hobby, and he learned the art of beekeeping from his dad. Martin took over management of the bees when he was 16 years old and now runs more than 200 hives at different locations. “It was a hobby, but we established the business with our neighbours so us mums could be at home for the children and eventually we bought the
neighbours out when they got busy with another business. “Honey is one of the oldest known sweeteners and is hailed for its medicinal properties. It is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and packed with highly valuable nutrients, and now people are becoming more interested in its culinary and health properties.” The Lynches planted thousands of native plants on the wetland of their property, to help feed the bees and enhance the environment. “We try to minimise feeding syrup to hives by balancing up honey frames in each apiary site. It is healthier for the bees to eat honey over sugar syrup, and it is important to ensure sugar syrup doesn’t get into the honey and spoil the natural flavours. We produce unblended

Martin and Stephanie Lynch provide a vast range of honey sourced from the beehives which they have strategically placed around Waikato patterns. We think climate change will make keeping bees alive much more difficult. “In summer if you want to help the bees, put a shallow bowl of water outside, with a few stones or wine corks for them to stand on if necessary. You don’t need to add anything to the water, but you can also grow plants that produce pollen and nectar such as hebes, bottlebrush and borage. We choose our sites carefully, and each location has its own special character, and this is reflected in the taste. We have special areas with the Hamilton City such as the gardens, zoo and Taitua Arboretum to help with biodiversity and bring more bees into
the inner city. Local people love it as they can buy the honey, which is called Kirikiriroa — the Maori name for Hamilton. “I love that we supply a natural, wholesome, nutritious food, in sustainable packaging. We sell locally through farmers’ markets, local outlets and the Sweetree Honey website. Bees are amazing creatures and produce wonderful natural food. They are highly resilient and very interesting to work with. “Visiting remote and beautiful areas in Waikato while looking after our hives is a joy, and nothing beats the taste and aroma of honey from freshly waxed frames.”

honey; this is not new, but ours are not based on a single flower source, but the local area and season. People say it tastes like the honey they had when they were young. “We use wooden honey frames in our hives as opposed to plastic, which has recently become popular. We believe wood is better for our bees, us humans and the environment. We extract the honey by cutting the wax cappings off each frame. These are placed into a spinner to extract the honey. It is then creamed to maintain a consistent texture and is then left to set over a few days before being manually packed into glass jars.” The only thing that is added is finegrained natural honey to start the creaming process. “It has not been damaged by heating and is not microfiltered or pasteurised so retains the enzymes, antibacterial qualities and high pollen counts that naturally occur. Rather than being packaged in plastic, it was important to us that our honey is stored in glass jars. Not only is it healthier, attractive and environmentally friendly; it is also reducing the stockpile of plastics. We are so passionate about reducing our plastic footprint we now also sell other plastic-free products on our website, to encourage our customers as well. “We try to minimise hive movements; they normally stay on location with checks during winter to ensure they are healthy. In summer they are busy little insects. In the Waikato, the last three honey seasons have been below average, partly due to unusual weather

Tayla has started running her own business and has had M & M collected and has semen for sale. Praising the mobile workshop by Andy Bryenton
The concept of calling in the professionals is not a new one, and there are plenty of records from ancient times of folks needing that extra bit of help, which was delivered by horse and cart. Some of our oldest written language comes from a clay slab dug up from the Iraqi Desert, dated to the Sumerian people of 5,000 years ago before Egypt was much more than a collection of huts next to the Nile. It’s a complaint about a bill for fixing a leaky roof. From the days of the old draught horse, when the great guilds of tradespeople were established (the most famous of which went on to become the modern charitable society, the Freemasons) through to colonial times, when farmers called in traction engines to shuttle plough their fields and process hay into bales, it’s been the same story. Help! We have a job to do, time is not on our side, and we don’t have the specialist tools and expertise to go it alone. What all of these people have needed, from the horse rider looking for a mobile farrier through to the medieval king sending out for engineers to make his castle impregnable to Vikings, is a

W H O A R E YO U G O I N G T O C A L L ? a new water heater or an electrical fix, they turn to the tradesman’s best friend, the white van. Note that the colour can change according to signwriting and branding, but the definition is as generic as ‘sticky tape’. There is a particular type of vehicle, which is purpose-built for western tradespeople to use as a combination office, tea break room, workshop and toolbox. It all begins with the Ford Transit, the original tradesperson’s van from the 1950s. You’ll see them carrying BBC camera equipment in the background of shows like Monty Python’s Flying Circus. The truth is, the original comes not from Britain, but Cologne in Germany. It was not until 1965 that the bulldognosed Transit we all know came into production, and it was initially a hit with crooks and cops rather than builders and plumbers. Robbers from the ‘old firm’ days when the Kray brothers ruled the London underworld loved how much loot you could pack in the nondescript but lively Transit; the law loved how many constables you could ferry to a fracas in the back. One of these 1960s Transits holds the record for longest service. It’s still on the road today after going all the way round the clock, a distance comparable to a moon mission, and it belongs to a plumbing firm in (appropriately) Bath, England. Here in New Zealand, the Transit Van and its opposite number from the Holden and General Motors stable, the venerable Bedford J series, have been transformed into everything from
farming flat decks to ambulances. You can still see Bedford ambulance camper vans at holiday hot spots each summer, next to another mobile workshop on wheels, the ice cream truck. The Japanese and Korean marques have made their mark in recent decades, with the Hiace, L300 and their ilk muscling into a territory where Ford still produces a dominant product. Nowadays, the farmer or business owner in need of fast response can summon a mobile welder, tyre service, diesel mechanic, or builder with their mobile phone. The man in the van is less likely to get lost along the way thanks to GPS. There have been some big advances in miniaturising the gear, which slides into the back of these highmileage, hard-working vans, meaning that more tools can be powered from a simple inverter and battery array. Where would we be without the tradesperson’s van? In a world where you can summon up a mobile taxidermist, podiatrist, tattoo artist, dentist or sushi chef, we take it for granted, perhaps, that more prosaic trades such as electricians and painters are out there on four wheels. So next time you see a proud van-driving tradie tucking into a mince and cheese pie by the side of the road on his tea break, reflect with pride on the innovation and hard work that’s put him there.

Electric tools come of age by Andy Bryenton
No so long ago petrol was king when it came to handling outdoor power, and the average tradesperson would carry a can of twostroke mix everywhere. Times have changed, and there are now some serious tools which run exclusively off electricity, raising the possibility of charging up a whole array of batteries direct via inverter from the ute or van itself. These are no weak or retiring versions of their petrol counterparts either. Here are three of the best, which are beloved of modern trade professionals, and might be a good match around the farm as well. Stihl invented the world’s first electric cut off saw specifically for those circumstances where it’s too far to run an extension cable. Compact and lighter than its petrol opposite number, the TSA 230 can cut tiles to size, bricks for masonry projects, and even comes with an abrasive wheel to slice steel like a roast dinner. Weighing in at 3.9 kilograms, the TSA 230 can cut to a depth of 70mm and keep going continually for up to 15 minutes on a single battery. That’s a quarter hour of powering through stone and steel, which is pretty impressive.
We service… • Septic tanks • Grease traps • Portaloos • Interceptors
Makita has made cordless drills for years now, but they have upped the ante with the super powerful DHR 242Z. A hammer drill, which is as serious as those that run a cable or even a small petrol motor, this monster weighs far less than you might think and can tackle drilling tasks into the toughest materials. It’s also designed to fit Makita’s portable dust extraction system, and it has an easy to operate slide chuck for quick switch-out of bits. Husqvarna is as at home with chainsaws as Makita are with drills, but once again their cordless range is a step up in practicality and power. Take, for example, the 535i XP, a chainsaw, which weighs less than its petrol stablemates but has been designed with the carpenter and tradie in mind as well as the home firewood user. Quieter, with less vibration and lower maintenance costs, this saw can even be attached to a battery backpack for all-day use without a recharge and far from power points.

Virtual introduction to the trades With the practical trades needing tens of thousands of new workers to meet a projected shortfall in future years, new strategies are being developed to entice school-age young people into a career on the tools.

Virtual immersion: students can learn skills via a simulation before entering the real world workplace
A new weapon in this arsenal is one, which has traditionally not been part of the school curriculum — computer games. We may remember the slightly clunky and heavily pixelated educational games of the 1980s, but a new offering being rolled out free of charge to all secondary schools is of a different order altogether. Construction Tycoon is one of three games that have been developed by JOY Business Academy in partnership with Xero, BNZ, Microsoft, BDO, BCITO and the Ministry of Social Development. As in the others, Tech Tycoon and Restaurant Tycoon, the focus is on building a successful business, but in the realm of construction, this also means hiring staff, managing inventory, building homes and staying solvent while juggling cash and work site regulations.
Educators plan to use this game to give students a taste of how their career in the trades could unfold; a successful game campaign boosts confidence that a student ‘has what it takes’ to be a tradesperson in the real world. It’s not the first time that the construction industry has turned to virtual reality to train a new generation. With the expense of heavy machinery and the need for operators to upskill without taking up valuable time at the controls of working equipment, virtual excavators and forestry equipment, cranes and other heavy machines are becoming more commonplace in the workplace. While realistic fullimmersion simulators were once only for astronauts and pilots, the rise of inexpensive virtual reality technology (even available for in-home gaming)
has seen this training method explode. Students are unsurprisingly enthusiastic about the roll-out of Construction Tycoon; who wouldn’t like the chance to game in school? The serious lessons wrapped up in the game are equally important and may lead to more apprenticeships in the near future. Try it out yourself for free at xero. com/nz/campaigns/tycoon-series.

Call the professionals for safety Rural New Zealand is a place, which tends to favour the multi-skilled; after all, there’s so many things to do around the farm or even the rural home that it’s good to develop a wide range of abilities to fix, mend, renew and restore those things that fail due to wear and tear. The big jobs sometimes require a professional approach, especially when it comes to those tasks that are a bit out of the ordinary. It is doubly true for those that take place off the ground, such as repairing roofing and guttering or taking care of overgrown trees. According to ACC statistics, the most dangerous thing in the tool shed is not a saw or hammer, but a ladder, with $17 million in injury claims a year recorded from ladder accidents. That statistic goes up as the age of the ladder user goes up, too; a fact accident analysts put down to the cando attitude of our older generation, who are used to tackling tasks themselves. Relatively recent changes to the rules about working above a certain height have recognised the perils of falling and
of poorly supported surfaces, leading to the requirement for professional tradespeople to erect scaffolding or use a secured harness in many aerial applications. While prudent, this had also added to the time and cost of undertaking such projects, leading many people to try to go it alone. This time of year is especially busy when it comes to getting off the ground, with gutters to clean, roof leaks to repair and dead tree limbs to cut down before storms drop them. The overwhelming message from health care providers is to be careful, assess the situation, and in any doubt as to your equipment and abilities, call the professionals. The reasoning is clear when a 2006 British study is taken

into account. Of 200,000 cases of doit-yourself injury (in one year, but not the larger population of Great Britain), more than half required time off work, and all, by definition, required a trip to the doctor. Assuming that due to injury the job was not completed successfully, that’s
200,000 cases where the expense of time off, recuperation, treatment and medication far outstripped the cost of just picking up the phone and hiring someone who specialises for a living. This winter, take a long look at those risky, high-up and outdoor jobs, and question if it’s worth it.

Video to aid biosecurity A new in-flight biosecurity video will remind international visitors about the importance of protecting New Zealand from unwanted pests and diseases.
Roger Smith, head of Biosecurity New Zealand
Biosecurity New Zealand launched the video that will play to arriving passengers on all airlines with screen capacity.
“All visitors to the country and Kiwis returning home can help protect New Zealand from harmful pests and diseases,” says the head of Biosecurity New Zealand, Roger Smith. “The new in-flight video provides a clear message about what everyone’s responsibilities are when arriving here. The simple lesson is; if you are unsure about an item, you have got — declare it. “Things like the Queensland fruit fly and brown marmorated stink bug have the potential to cause significant damage to our primary sector, our environment and to our unique way of life.” There are two versions of the video — one in English and one for Chinese airlines in Mandarin. The videos feature Auckland-based quarantine officers Fin and Kenneth who can usually be found on the ground at Auckland International Airport. Detector dog, Darwin the beagle, has a starring role in the video. Darwin and handler Mikkiie work on the front-line sniffing out items that aren’t allowed here. Mr Smith
CALLING ALL LAND OWNERS Could parts of your land earn better returns? New government grants under the 1 Billion Trees scheme could make forestry an even more attractive investment.
says he is pleased the majority of airlines that fly into the country have agreed to play the video. “United Airlines was the first airline to start playing it, and others with the capability to show videos on board quickly followed.” The video is part of a wider Biosecurity New Zealand programme focussed on protecting Aotearoa and supports the biosecurity movement ‘Ko Tatou This Is Us’.
“‘Ko Tatou This Is Us’ highlights the personal connection we all have to the land, rivers, lakes and sea that nourish and provide for us.” The new in-flight biosecurity video is translated into 12 different languages, including Hindi, Malay, Arabic, Korean and French. It has also been translated into Bislama, a national language in Vanuatu spoken by many seasonal workers.

DAIRY
Farmers take the lead on water Ask most people about the most important element needed for a productive farm, and they would likely say that it’s land, or possibly sunshine for photosynthesis; farmers, however, know that it’s water. Water is the engine driving healthy pasture growth, is necessary for animal health, is used to help break down effluent, to clean and to cool in the shed and to irrigate crops. That means it’s held in high regard. The news that this is likely to be drier than average winter with lower soil moisture and river flows will already be on the radar of the custodians of the land. Farmers are, in fact, responsible for the biggest voluntary environmental improvement project of the last decade. Since the publication of the Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord in 2013, a raft of proposals from this document have been implemented, covering aspects from water usage through to effluent disposal and the exclusion of livestock from watercourses on Kiwi farms. Consider the sheer amount of creeks, rivers and streams running through our rural heartlands. Now process the fact that close to 98 per cent of them have been blocked to livestock. Riparian planting is also well advanced.
The Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord was developed under the oversight of the Dairy Environment Leadership Group, comprising representatives from farmers, dairy companies, central government, regional councils and the Federation of Maori Authorities. It has been a voluntary commitment by the industry. With commitments to better nutrient management, water use, irrigation infrastructure improvements, effluent processing and more, the accord is hitting targets, which were deemed difficult at the time. There are those who are ahead and those who are behind, often because (as in the vase of a corollary new standard, the improvement of milk chiller equipment) of overworked thirdparty contractors. It’s getting done, which makes a difference on a considerable scale. Farmers may have a question of their own after this effort. Where is the accord for urban planners and authorities to work through their environmental responsibilities in the same way?

Why Use Hutches or Pens?
Factors that influence calf mortality/antibiotic usage.
• Healthy outdoor environment • Calves separated so less disease risk and build immunity • Per calf by far most cost effective & no planning required • Lowest calf mortality rates • Lower Antibiotic usage/better calf welfare • Can be used with calf feeders (watch this space) • Pens: indoor feeding and effective use of space • Better working environment
• Ventilation: A baby calf must have fresh clean low ammonia air. • Bedding: Calf must have a clean comfortable dry bed. • Temperature: Must have a stable temperature (no quick changes) • Feed: Feed correctly from colostrum to concentrate. • Management: Have the correct systems (calf housing & feeding equipment) & management procedures to handle all above any size of farm. To be able to easily and economically grow as the dairy operation grows. New Zealand and Australian Distributor

The answer to corrosion
Should I take coenzyme Q10? Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance essential for life. While we normally make all the CoQ10 we need, some people because of age, health problems or medications can benefit from taking extra good quality CoQ10. CoQ10 is essential to make the energy our bodies need. The final stage of making energy needs CoQ10 to shuttle the hydrogen needed to generate energy. If your levels of CoQ10 are low, this can be felt as low energy, weak muscles and general fatigue. CoQ10 is also an exceptional antioxidant protecting cells and fats from free radicals. The most essential antioxidant function is to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol as it circulates in the body. It is a critical part of our natural defences against blockages in heart arteries and other blood vessels. Possibly the most common reason for CoQ10 supplementation is for those using cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication. The side effects of statins are so common that they are a diagnosable disease called statin myopathy. The most common side effects are muscle stiffness, pain and weakness; this can also cause general fatigue, which often feels like a lack of motivation.
Statins effectively inhibit the enzyme needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately, this enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) is also required to make CoQ10. Blocking this enzyme reduces cholesterol but also CoQ10 by as much as 50%. Drug companies are well aware of this problem and hold patents for combining CoQ10 with statins. Until such drugs are available, I recommend those on statins supplement with 100– 200mg of naturally fermented CoQ10. Be aware that our retail market is now flooded with lower grade semi-synthetic CoQ10 usually sold in higher doses at much lower prices. Adding a good CoQ10 alongside statins will in most cases, protect against and often reverse existing statin side effects. My favourite is the wellresearched and patented US product CoQsol. Prolan a lanolin based industrial lubricant and corrosion inhibitor made here in New Zealand has many uses within the agricultural and industrial sectors for preventing corrosion and lubricating machinery. Commercial operators, as well as farmers, have found Prolan Enduro Heavy Grade when applied to a vehicle chassis is excellent as a rust preventative on 4WD, fertiliser loaders, truck, bus and motorhome chassis. In fact, it works that well that many vehicle-testing stations are recommending a coating of Prolan to prevent corrosion. A spray on moldboards and ploughing equipment prevents rust and keeps them clean and in good condition. It is the unique ability of the lanolin in Prolan that penetrates into metal components that prevents corrosion. It saves the life of machinery exposed to air and moisture out in the field or during storage. Around the workshop and for general maintenance Prolan’s ‘Enduro Medium grade’ works well as a general lubricant, penetrating into seized bolts, chains and other moving parts. It’s so versatile it replaces many other workshop lubricants and is used to stop squeaks as well as to prevent rust long term. Farmers and contractors have noticed that Prolan stays on once applied, saving repetitive maintenance.
For example, an orchard mulching contractor found by applying Prolan to his flails on his machine he saved time on repeat applications instead of lubricating daily he used it once a week for maintenance. A coating of Prolan Enduro medium grade is excellent on quad bike chassis protecting against manure and salt, with the added benefit that it stays on. In the Prolan product range, there is also an anti-seize grease, which is very popular for assembly of components. A small smear applied to bolts or pins when assembling equipment ensures they can be undone years later. It also minimises parts replacement as these can be removed easier instead of by force which results in breakage if no anti-seize has been applied. The Prolan product range is made up of natural wool lanolin, which ticks the boxes for environmental friendliness and biodegradability — safe on the environment as well as the user. Prolan saves time, work and money. By simply applying a spray to farm machinery and equipment it lasts a lot longer and increases its resale value.
