Tw o advisory subcommittees will meet on matters relevant to the council’s flood protection programmes in the Lower Waikato and Waihou-Piako zones, and two drainage advisor y subcommittees will be established in each of the Waikato and Thames Valley catchments. Stu Husband, chair of the council’s river and catchment management committee, had convened informal stakeholder group meetings in the Lower Waikato and Waihou-Piako zones during early March. At the council meeting, he got a majority backing from councillors to formalise an advisory arrangement. “Since disestablishing the catchment and drainage committees last November, Stu Husband, chair of the Waikato Regional Council’s River we have been exploring new and Catchment Management Committee ways of obtaining effective input from community members and protection and drainage assets. Waikato Regional Council is proposing to transfer summer bathing beach, regional rivers, rainfall and groundwater quality monitoring within the Lake Taupo catchment to the trust board. On May 28, councillors heard that Section 33 of the Resource Management Act enables a local authority to transfer any one or more of its functions, powers or duties under the act to another public authority, except for the power of transfer itself. Councillors voted unanimously in favour of releasing the statement of proposal for public feedback. “Lake Taupo has become a symbol of near-pristine environmental conditions and is seen as a national treasure,” says Waikato Regional Council chair, Russ Rimmington. “Monitoring of the water quality of Lake Taupo is, therefore, an essential and vital tool to ensure we can keep our precious national taonga healthy and clean for all to enjoy and use. “It is an exciting and transformational proposal, which acknowledges the unique ownership status of Taupo Waters. It would bring efficiencies and potential financial benefits for us, with council staff not required to travel to Taupo as regularly to undertake this work, saving travel time and fuel costs. “Having local partners on the ground with the technical expertise and skills would provide a range of benefits for

A HOLSTEIN
FRIESIAN FOCUS by Ann van Engelen
Jessica Willis’ focus on cow condition helped her almost halve the empty rate on a 48-hectare dairy farm she managed for four years, milking 150 Holstein Friesians.

essica is a member of Holstein Friesian NZ and aspires to own a herd of Holstein Friesians in the future. “The property at Opotiki was flat and below sea level. It got extremely wet during the winter and spring, and it was a constant juggling act to ensure cows didn’t pug paddocks and damage pasture,” said Jessica. “I moved to the farm in June 2016, when it was bought by Alan Baird and Sandie Redpath-Baird. Fortunately, the farm didn’t flood. We had pumps to remove excess water, but full drains kept the water table high. “Alan and Sandie own Wai-Moa Holstein Friesians and live in Rotorua, where they milk 380 cows on a 120-hectare property. I had worked for
them on and off since I was at high school. It was an amazing opportunity to run my own farm. “I spent the past four seasons, increasing production and improving the genetic make-up of the herd. The cows came from a farm where they were only milked once a day and were producing 280–300 kilograms of milksolids per cow. I milked twice a day from the start of calving in mid-July, until dry off in May.” Production climbed to 60,000kgMS in the 2018–19 season, or 410kgMS a cow. The farm’s target last season was 64,000kgMS. “My major focus was on feeding and ensuring cows hit body condition score targets while I overhauled their reproductive performance. The herd’s empty (not in calf) rate in the 2019–20

industry. The 2019–20 season was my first year milking the first progeny testing daughters born on the farm. There were some really good heifers in the group. I preferred the heifers born as the result of nominated matings. We started using overseas genetics from World Wide Sires two years ago and also sourced semen from other bulls through CRV Ambreed. “Our goal was to breed sizeable cows with strong udders and high milk production. The sires we used included Waihou Thadius Murphy S3F, Lornlace Rupert Dunstan, Maire Mint Geronimo, HSS Mint Rivington, Oakura Oman Overdrive and HSS Format Pascal-ET. They produced beautiful daughters, with good, well-attached udders. Being a sire proving herd meant all two-year-

olds were scored for traits other than production (TOP) each spring. “About 50 replacement heifer calves were reared each year, and surplus heifers went to Alan and Sandie’s Rotorua dairy farm.” Last December, Jessica married Andrew Willis, an agri-business banker with ANZ. “We bought a house in Rotorua, and I moved there in late May. season was 11 per cent. It was my best result ever — it usually sat between 18– 20 per cent. It was a great feeling to see tweaks in the cows’ feeding paying off. “The herd’s six-week in-calf rate, which is the percentage of cows pregnant in the first six weeks of mating, was 76 per cent. That was two per cent short of the sector target of 78 per cent, but well above the industry average of 65 per cent. Our six-week in-calf rate usually sat around 60 per cent. I believe the results were due to the changes in cow management and feeding during the winter and spring months. “Last winter was the first time we split the dry cows based on their body condition. We had a mob of fats and a mob of lighter cows. The heifers calved in better condition than previous years and held their condition longer into the spring.” One hundred tonnes of maize silage and 175 tonnes of a palm kernel expeller blend was brought on-farm annually. “To help put condition on the cows ahead of dry off and winter, I usually fed the maize from March to May. Last year, I kept feeding maize until the start of mating at the beginning of October. That helped the cows keep condition on their backs after calving and gave them an energy boost,” says Jessica. “I milked the herd through a 16-aside herringbone shed. The cows were tail painted when they left the colostrum mob to enable me to monitor pre-mating heats. The farm played a crucial role in helping to evaluate the performance of young breeding bulls through CRV Ambreed’s sire proving scheme. “I am a trained artificial insemination technician, and each spring we were provided with 100 straws of semen from about 10 new, young, unproven bulls. We could use the straws to inseminate any cow. I enjoyed being part of the programme because it helps highlight the best bulls for the

Antenatal classes help farmers by Ann van Engelen
Carmen Lett has practised as a midwife for 12 years and is offering online antenatal classes to help people in rural communities and beyond obtain childbirth education.
“I
was born in Townsville, Australia and moved to New Zealand in the 1990s with my family for my parents’ work,” says Carmen. “From a really young age, I had a fascination with babies and the birth process. My mum had Michael Odent’s picture book on birth that I loved reading. I went to Epsom Girls’ Grammar, where I had to start thinking about a career. The careers adviser recommended midwifery as it was a perfect mix of babies and birth. “I trained straight after finishing my schooling. I was one of the youngest in my year, and although I didn’t have a lot of life experience, I was certain it was a perfect choice. I married and
had been a midwife for four years when Aidan and I had our daughter Rosie. My clinical skills remained the same, but I gained empathy. I am not a better midwife but a different midwife. When a client says it hurts, I know it does. Rosie was breach and got stuck so needed an emergency cesarean. “I returned to working part-time at Middlemore after four months. Once Rosie was sleeping through, I did night shifts and have done them for the past seven years. We now also have three sons, including twins. “Asher and Jude were induced, one needed the suction cup, and one was born normal, and our last, Taj, was a normal birth. I wanted home births

trimester so you can revisit the content if there are issues after birth, like sleeping or feeding. “I give researched non-biased advice. I don’t want anyone to walk away, thinking there is only one way to do things. I interview a car seat technician, a sleep consultant, touch on mental health, how to bath, swaddle and put a nappy on to name a few topics. “Pregnancy and childbirth should be a good experience, but that’s not always the way. Being informed if you encounter things that don’t feel right is a good start because midwives don’t always have the time to discuss every concern. I now work independently and have about 40 patients. It is very important to have
care throughout a pregnancy. There is very little that I have not seen from normal lovely births to very high risk and sad situations. I want to reach the farming communities as they often can’t be away from the farm or don’t want to go to classes for personal reasons. “I recommend things like feeding on demand within reason and how to increase milk supply by eating wellbalanced diets with foods like oats and taking herbal supplements such as fenugreek or blessed thistle and drinking lots of water. “We are not anti-formula, but the more formula used the less breast milk is made. Some people go by the book and still have a terrible milk supply.
A midwife for 12 years, Carmen says there is not much she hasn’t seen when it comes to birth
You need support in every decision you make, including bottle or breastfeeding. Mothers shouldn’t feel bad having an epidural for pain relief either. I provide good, researched information with the aim of presenting a non-biased view. “I also recommend visiting a GP if things don’t feel right within yourself, whether physically, mentally or emotionally. There are awesome support networks to utilise, and I have Facebook support groups that I link people to. One
is a public forum, and one is a private group, which has more content with questions and answers. “I am here to help, ultimately it is about people knowing there is support no matter what they need. You don’t have to do it completely on your own. “Babies are my favourite thing in the world, and I want parents to feel supported and not judged with any decisions they make regarding childbirth.”

G I N D U ST R N I N I Y GA KNOWLEDGE BY ANN VAN EGNELEN
Farm manager Daisy Higgs milked 300 cows in Morrinsville and at 24 years old has been named the Waikato 2020 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards Farm Manager of The Year.
“I
was runner-up last year, and still in shock that I won this year. I grew up in the suburbs in England and moved to New Zealand in 2004 with my parents, who are school teachers. They purchased a farmlet in Taranaki for a new lifestyle as it was so affordable to own a block of land compared to England,” says Daisy. “We ended up with cows, calves and horses, and our neighbours were dairy farmers. I helped on the farms and reared calves and raised some for pet day, which got me interested in the career. “I went to university and did a science degree majoring in animal science. In my last year, I changed to a minor in
animal science because I couldn’t see many jobs needing that degree. I applied for a few grad roles such as fertiliser application, and a dairy farming job came up in Morrinsville. I knew the family from a university peer, and I got the job. My boss Aaron also studied at uni, and understands the importance of the theory behind the farming process for graduates. I started in November, which was good to get my head around everything before calving. It is a system three–four, and I loved it and haven’t looked back. “Aaron taught me all the skills like fencing and maintenance. That is where I was working when I won the award. I have recently moved farm after three

and a half seasons and am now farm managing in Roto-o-rangi. It is a system two, and I am the sole charge for Shaun and Steph. It is more rolling and perfect to expand my experience on. My partner Charlie and I want to eventually return to his family farm in Taranaki and sharemilk. This position will help us towards that goal. “I am milking 180 Friesian cows that are grass-fed with silage, hay and a small amount of palm kernel through the shed for supplements. We don’t

have any crops at present as we are restricted with not many flat paddocks. I did chicory on my previous farm, which worked really well. It is good during drought as it has a good root system as long as you plant it with a bit of rain. It persists better than some grass, especially with effluent sprayed on. “I am a big advocate for education and believe in doing courses such as Primary ITO. I believe in fixing small problems before they become big. You don’t realise how much dairy farming

It pushes you into figuring out what your goals are. We are now more careful with money and realise if we don’t knuckle down, we won’t be sharemilking for another 10-plus years. accounting or economics. I guess it is only important once it relates to you. I would tell a younger Daisy to do the commerce degree. “We are still twice a day milking at present but going to once a day helps keep the body condition score high. That is generally a priority from March onwards. If you don’t have the right BCS, it has a negative effect on production and reproduction later on. We aim for a good-sized calf and Steph takes care of feeding the calves, which allows me

to focus on the main farm chores. That gives me enough time to get everything done in a day. “This is an awesome career. There are not many jobs you can work with animals, cruise around on a motorbike all day and become a plumber and machinery mechanic. I am considering entering the Young Farmers competitions as it helps improve the practical side of things like fencing, labelling and identifying things. The judges are like mentors, and their feedback helps you see what you can
improve on. Even if you don’t win, you get so much out of it and discover what direction you may like to head. “I don’t think I would have got this opportunity if I hadn’t got runner-up last season. We have a beautiful community spirit with events such as a tractor field day. “Socialising is an important part of farming. I am now focussing on our farm statistics, improving calving rates, working on the overall system and getting to know the local area better.”

Concrete floor restoration Owner of All Floor Prep Ltd, Jun Dong is excited to be offering the services of his team to apply the Lactoguard product to help restore concrete surfaces in cowshed vat rooms and more. “Our flooring service for the dairy industry is especially important for the vat room as milk acid erodes the concrete floor surface making it pitted and unhygienic,” says Jun. “Lactoguard is a truly unique product to the market. There is simply nothing like it out there. Formulated and developed here in New Zealand, it is unlike other inferior cement-based products on the market. It totally withstands all moisture and lactose erosion such as milk and
milk products, acids and alkalis. It will not delaminate over time, saving you money such as in penalties, downtime and hassles. “It is an extremely durable and hardwearing coating. It not only repairs unsightly and unsanitary pitting in cowshed dairies and around vat stands but also all over the milking plant and yards. “Lactoguard transforms these unsightly areas into fantastic looking, safe working

If you apply it to an outdoor deck — it will last longer than any cement-based product. Once applied, surfaces are easily cleaned with hot water. Butcher shops use it as well. “We are proud to provide a quality service, and do it once and do it right. Concern regarding plan change There are fears that good farming practices may be stifled as a result of the proposed new regulations for the Waikato and Waipa River Catchments outlined in Waikato Regional Plan Change 1. A turnout of more than 90 farmers, industry body and council representatives gathered at a public meeting at Ohinewai Hall organised by Federated Farmers North Waikato District chair Steven Stark. “The purpose of the meeting was to provide an opportunity for farmers to gain a better understanding of the recent Plan Change 1 (Healthy Rivers) decision and its implications, and to provide feedback to Feds, Waikato councillors and others,” said Federated Farmers North Island Policy manager, Dr Paul Le Miere. “Useful changes have been made to the framework of the plan, but there are remaining concerns and issues around the detail of the proposed regulations that will need to be addressed through the Environment Court appeal process. “Rather than wading through the hundreds of pages of council documents themselves, Feds is encouraging farmers to read through our FAQs and focus on the council schedules to understand how PC1 may affect your farm,” he said. These are available on the fedfarm. org.nz website. Federated Farmers Auckland president Alan Coles says farmers raised concerns that the new land use controls are not fit for purpose and will not achieve the water quality improvements everyone is keen to see. “The overall sentiment remains that over-reliance on the consenting process will tie limited resources up in regulatory knots and create perverse environmental outcomes.” Federated Farmers will be running more meetings and workshops around the Waikato and Waipa catchments in the coming weeks to ensure all affected farmers are given the opportunity to understand the implications for their farming businesses and provide feedback. Feds Waikato president Jacqui Hahn says the proposed regulations could stifle good farming practices if on-farm decisions are taken out of farmers’ hands and placed in the

Can I improve my Joints? (Part two) by John Arts
Last edition, I mentioned a client who went from having very sore knees to know being able to move with much greater freedom. We looked at the first lesson we can learn from this.
Dr Paul Le Miere, Federated Farmers North Island Policy manager
hands of consent officers who do not have practical on-farm experience. The stock controls being applied over Class 6e land were most often referred to as troublesome in this regard. Federated Farmers and other nonfarmer submitters are required to file an appeal by July 8, 2020. All individual farmers and growers who submitted have until August 18 2020.
All healing comes from specific healing systems in our body. We also saw that these healing systems could be restricted or even dormant if our diets tip the scales in the wrong direction. The second lesson is very important. The gap between healing and continued disease is often much less than you think. What surprised my client is how little he actually had to do to activate the healing capacity in his knees. The first step is to slow or stop unwanted inflammation. That does mean you need to think about foods, but in most cases, it is simply substituting one food for another. It can be swapping the inflammatory high omega-6 cooking oils for olive oil and adding fish oil supplements. The rest of his programme was not difficult. I started him on an initially high dose of my joint formula. That meant that initially, he was getting 1,600mg of high grade (small molecular size) chondroitin sulphate with 1,600 mg
of glucosamine sulphate and 400mg of a 95% bioactive curcumin (from turmeric) extract. Chondroitin is the most important as it directly improves the health of cells that repair and maintain cartilage. Curcumin targeted inflammation while glucosamine helped with joint function. It sounds complex, but all this meant was after breakfast, taking two of the joint capsules and three fish oil then repeating this in the evening. Yes, there is the discipline of having to take the supplements and, of course, fitting these into his budget. The results meant he has much less pain and more mobility. Monitoring cow health and status Having the ability to monitor individual cow health and heat status is fast becoming a game-changer for New Zealand dairy farmers. James and Rosie Pelham are equity partners of Acer Properties in Putaruru. They are using Allflex collars to increase submission and conception rates, along with a move to full artificial breeding (AB). The couple purchased an Allflex monitoring system in August 2018, and they have never looked back. “We chose Allflex over competitors because it was proven technology and we preferred the software, said James. The goal was to take the time commitment off James and Rosie and use the reliability of the collars to identify cows that are on heat. It’s also given them the confidence to use short gestation semen and tighten up their calving pattern. The collars have also been a valuable investment for Airport Farm owners Ed and Melissa Whiting in Stratford. They started with just the collars and have now installed an Allflex ‘Intelligate’ drafting gate to complete the system. “We have significantly improved our cow health and calving is a breeze, Ed says. They have climbed from 420kg/MS a cow to 545kg/MS by focussing on the cows that ruminate well and the ones that are healthy. However, the biggest change has been regarding people. “Mating is probably the easiest time of the year now. Anyone can be milking, and the cows on heat are

Stopping rust long-term Prolan, a New Zealand-made lanolin-based lubricant and corrosion inhibitor, is becoming increasingly popular with farmers, engineers, panel beaters, motorhomers and boaties for its unique ability to adhere to metal and stop rust in its tracks. Now Prolan has just launched a new product called Prolan Extreme that it was due to promote at the postponed National Fieldays at Mystery Creek. Prolan director Murray Shaw says this product is the ‘Rolls Royce’ of the lanolin products. “Not only is it environmentallyfriendly — it leaves a clean waxy coating and provides longer rust protection.” Prolan Extreme is attracting much interest for those with machinery and equipment exposed to harsh
environments, such as salt, sand and mud, says Murray. “The results are excellent. We’ve trialled it within industries throughout New Zealand from mussel spat farmers to Great Barrier Island engineers.” Prolan manufactures a number of different grades to suit varying needs. Better options than Log Bill The Forest Owners Association says more exports of processed timber products from New Zealand looks a good prospect on paper, but Minister Shane Jones’ current Log bill is not going to achieve this, and there are better options.

be more processing in New Zealand sawmills, with foresters forced to pay for it. “That is misguided and dangerous. The international market in timber is way more subsidised and protected than the international log market. Mr Stanley would take us out of a post-Covid and developing international log trade protection smouldering fire, into a redhot blast furnace of trade protectionism for timber products. “There are ways to grow processing in New Zealand, which would work. A timber preference policy for wood construction is one obvious and cost-free way the
government could give substance to its ambitions for local processing. “The government says it is going to have a major international trade promotion for the primary sector. Forest products must be a part of that. Some doors into other countries’ markets can only be opened by cabinet ministers. The biggest opportunities are in timber product innovation. The future lies in a bioeconomy, and our plantation forests can be part of that exciting future. We want to embrace that with our science teams and government. We would like to hope that WPMA would have the vision to be part of that as well.”

Forest Owners is responding to statements from the New Zealand Wood Processors and Manufacturers Association in favour of the bill, which the WPMA expects will result in the diversion of export logs to local sawmillers at cheaper prices. “Any legislation, which diverts income from one part of a sector to another is distortionary to the economy,” says Forest Owners president Phil Taylor. “It is a dangerous experiment in protectionism, just at a time when our government is cautioning against other countries doing this. Neither the basis nor the effects of the bill have been researched at all, and it is being rushed through under urgency. As NZIER has pointed out, a comparable policy to protect Australian car manufacturing has cost a fortune and ended in disaster.” Phil Taylor says the WPMA chairman, Brian Stanley’s claim that the bill would bring forestry into line with the rest of the land-based industries is not accurate. “There is no part of the New Zealand primary sector which has ever had a regime imposed where exports were expected to subsidise local manufacturing. It is a WPMA fantasy. “Likewise, Mr Stanley asserts that since other countries subsidise their timber industry, then the solution should

Blackcurrant industry advancing
19
The news is bright for the New Zealand blackcurrant industry, with a recent meta-analysis study showing that properties in Adaptive New Zealand blackcurrants can improve sports performance. A meta-analysis conducted by scientists from the University of Auckland and Plant & Food Research, and recently published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, has concluded that the unique balance of anthocyanins in Adaptive New Zealand blackcurrants clearly improves sports performance. “While numerous scientific studies have looked at the health benefits of berries, including blackcurrants, no previous studies have evaluated the overall scientific evidence around whether, and by how much the blackcurrants improve sports performance,” says scientist Dr Roger Hurst. “The meta-analysis included nine clinical studies, consuming Adaptive New Zealand blackcurrants could improve sports performance by 0.45 per cent compared to a placebo. “For a natural, plant-based, performance enhancer this is a significant result — especially considering the average difference between gold and silver at the Rio Olympics was 0.54 per cent. “By contrast, caffeine, which has been promoted as the best legal performance enhancer currently on offer, can improve sports performance by 0.41 per cent. “This study, as well
as other previous studies, raise the possibility that, in addition to improving blood flow, New Zealand blackcurrants may prime the body’s master antioxidant regulator, helping to mediate the benefits of training on oxidative stress management, inflammation and immunity. “Timing of intake is also highlighted in this review, with one to two hours prior to activity indicated as most effective, along with optimum dosage, with the effective dose appearing to be between 105–210mg of Adaptive New Zealand blackcurrant anthocyanins. “While all berries have high concentrations of anthocyanins, not all berries are equal. “The physiological effects of different berries suggest that they don’t all have the same bioactivity. When it comes to athletic performance, New Zealand blackcurrants may pack a little more punch than other berries. “The Adaptive New Zealand blackcurrant brand assures consumers that they are getting genuine New Zealand grown blackcurrants. “The product contains the combination of anthocyanins not found in other berries or blackcurrants grown elsewhere in the world in the quantities that are required to have a biological effect.”

“Eco Pods are stylish, pre-built, architecturally-designed transportable buildings, which transform into a variety of building needs including accommodation, art galleries, workshops and office space,” says Steve. “The Kumeu Arts Centre installed an Eco Pod mid-March 2019 with the community of art lovers and artists excitedly welcoming their new building to be used as a gallery and workshop. “With enormous growth around the Kumeu region, demand increased for the facilities and services of the not-for-profit arts centre. They needed additional space to provide an extra gallery for exhibiting artists’ works. As well as a workshop space for community events and activities, it needed to feature a bathroom, kitchenette and office space. “We worked with KAC’s tight budget and core value for minimalising environmental impact. KAC’s top three positives from the process were we got the basics right.” This busy centre has 120 people each week using the space, with event days seeing more than 50 people exhibiting and using the Pod gallery. “We welcome approximately 1,200 visitors to the centre each month,” said Kumeu Arts Centre manager, Jago Neal.

“Eco Pods have met all of our expectations and held up to the busy life as a workshop, gallery and, unexpectedly, as a part-time creche. It came in on schedule and under budget, provided all the requirements of the space, and thirdly, it’s durable in function, the building is warm, modern and has attractive detailing. “The high ceilings in the gallery and workroom feel spacious and inviting. We love the indoor/outdoor flow, which has made it ideal for events such as exhibition openings. Having the kitchenette close to the gallery helps keep everything contained in one area. “The natural, organic aesthetic appeal of the Eco Pod ties into the overall image and brand identity we want to project.
The community appreciates how pleasant the quietness is inside. The building presents a nice, calm environment for activities such as weaving workshops — creating a homely welcoming, comfortable atmosphere. “We value sustainability and wanted to work with and be seen publicly to support a greener company. The natural, organic aesthetic appeal ties into the overall image and brand identity we wanted to project.” The company also offers pods to rent for short-term requirements or a full design and build on relocatable pods as well as ones requiring a building consent. WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES June 2020 ADVERTORIAL
Another new season! by Cheyne Waldron
The month of June sees the start of a new season for our dairy farmers, and there will be a number of new sharemilkers, contract milkers and farmworkers right around the country coming to grips with a new farm and the various changes that this brings. June is traditionally the last month of the financial year for sheep and beef farmers. It has been very much a mixed year with generally good climatic conditions for the first six months of the year and excellent prices achieved. However, tough climatic conditions and the impact of Covid-19 saw a drop in the beef and sheep meat schedules. Farmers moving from being employees to now being self-employed will need to have made a decision about the type of structure that they trade under. For new farm syndicates, a limited partnership structure is often used, and where a farm has been purchased by a family rather than a syndicate, a trust can give considerable benefits. The Inland Revenue Department announced the 2020 national average market values (Herd Values) on May 26. Values for dairy cattle were very similar to the previous year, while values for
sheep were down approximately 13% on the year before, while beef livestock values were down approximately 16%. It is no doubt a reflection of the tough trading conditions and lower prices achieved during the past few months. Farmers generally have two options for valuing their livestock on hand in their financial accounts. The National Standard Cost Scheme sees farmers valuing their livestock at cost or purchase price, plus a ‘growing on cost’ while with the national average market values (Herd Scheme values), livestock are at market value. There may be some opportunity for farmers to utilise Herd Scheme values if they have been using National Standard Cost in the past. Fonterra, industry leaders and banks are expressing concerns, and it is anticipated there will be a reasonably significant drop in the dairy payout.

Venison exports reopen
27
A catalogue of approved animal species for human consumption has been issued by the People’s Republic of China. It includes venison from farmed malu, the Chinese name for red deer, along with more traditional farm animals and poultry. “The inclusion of our deer is great news for venison producers and marketers, as it will make it clear to officials across China that the sale and consumption of our venison are legal and safe for Chinese consumers,” says Deer Industry NZ chief executive Innes Moffat. “Chinese consumers have a growing appreciation for quality animal proteins, making China an increasingly important market for our venison. It was taking about 10 per cent of our exports until the end of 2019. “When it became clear that the Covid-19 virus had jumped the species barrier from wild animals, China clamped-down on illegal sales of wild animal meat. “Although our venison comes from farmed deer, this put a virtual halt to our exports there. “Given that deer are still widely seen as wild animals, it is easy to see how some regional and border officials might have become uncertain about the legality of our farmed venison.” Mr Moffat thanks the officials in China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Affairs for being so responsive to the industry’s requests for the status of NZ farmed venison to be clarified. “The news is really very timely. China has seen a dramatic slowing of the incidence of Covid-19, to the point where Wuhan, the source of the pandemic, is reporting no new cases. “Restaurants in many regions are reopening, but with social distancing. It is a good time for us to be selling our delicious venison there. “Restaurants in some of our other main markets are also reopening before they have fully eliminated Covid. How consumers will respond to this situation is unclear; which means there is less certainty about when trade will recover to previous levels.” China’s official catalogue of animals approved for human consumption names three deer species — malu (Cervus elaphus), sika and reindeer. In its Journal of Livestock and Genetic Resources, venison from NZ malu is the only imported red deer variety listed. “Deer are being treated by China the same as other livestock raised for meat. Some other species are permitted
Innes Moffat, Deer Industry NZ chief executive
to be used only for traditional Chinese medicines, or for only for their fur, with
their use as food prohibited,” says Mr Moffat.

Creating an
ANIMAL REFUGE by Ann van Engelen With a vision to help animals of all shapes and sizes from across New Zealand get out of abusive situations alongside their owners, construction is underway for a pet refuge with farmers across the country offering to support large animals when necessary.
“I
became aware that some people experiencing family violence delay leaving out of fear for their pets’ lives and I want to help them,” says Pet Refuge founder Julie Chapman. “Often, victims have to choose between their safety and the safety of their pets as pets are part of their family. The refuge will take smaller animals like dogs, cats, and rabbits with farmers around the country ready to care for larger animals such as horses, pigs, goats and cows. “I am the founder of KidsCan helping children in school with necessities such as food and footwear, and we participated in research last year with Women’s Refuge. Nine hundred women answered that they had experienced
pet abuse alongside family violence. It showed dogs were the most abused, followed by cats, cows and horses. Twenty-three per cent had a pet killed by a partner. Fifty-three per cent delayed leaving to try and keep their pet safe, and 73 per cent would have left sooner if there was a place for their pet to go. “I love animals, and it has been a long-term dream to help them in some way, but I didn’t want to duplicate rescue services that already exist. Our intention is for the refuge to be secure in the permanent location for future generations.” The small animal shelter is on five acres at a secret location in the North Island. It will take up to 24 dogs, 35 cats and 15 smaller animals including rabbits, guinea pigs and birds.
Julie Chapman is creating a haven for animals that are in need of accommodation when families leave abusive relationships

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES June 2020
“We will open later this year, and once we are up and running, we would like to establish one in the South Island. We are building a network of safe farms around New Zealand to house the larger animals, including horses, cows, sheep, alpaca and pigs. We have more than 50 farmers ready to take large animals and care for them. “On farms, people have pet cows, sheep or other large animals, and it is proven that hurting animals is a means of control in family violence. The abuser is saying ‘if I can do this to the cow, horse, goat or dog, I can do this to you’. There are many stories of children witnessing their pets being tortured, abused or killed, and that has a severe effect on a child’s mental health and wellbeing. “We will take pet referrals from Women’s Refuge, police and family violence organisations. Paid animal welfare staff will run the shelter, and caseworkers will work with victims. This was an unmet social issue and will give animals temporary housing so their families can leave the abusive situation. Most safe houses don’t allow pets so this removes one of the barriers that people face when they want to secure their own safety. They will be able to all leave together.” The animals will receive behaviour therapy, vet care, food and safety until they can be reunited with owners.
“We would like to see more landlords be open to renting to people with pets so they can remain together as this helps everyone, including the animals, to heal. The cold hard facts are the majority of abuse is men against women and children, and New Zealand has the highest rate of family violence reporting in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). One in three women will experience partner violence at some point in their life, and 14 are killed by their partners or expartners each year. We acknowledge men are also victims of abuse, and we will certainly take their pets. “We have modelled our programmes on the RSPCA New South Wales programme. One of their team came to us for six months to help pull the programme together to ensure we can deal with these situations in the correct way. We will be holding pets for up to four months so our clients can take comfort in knowing their pets are looked after and getting the help they need to recover from their trauma. “We couldn’t do this without the farmers’ support and are very grateful as this is another gap that we can fill to support families to get away from the violence that impacts lives for a very long time.” To offer help for large animals or for more information, go to petrefuge.org. nz or the Pet Refuge NZ Facebook page.
