ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.
“The industry’s leaders including dairy company chairs and chief executives and Federated Farmers’ dairy section have met over the past month to discuss the serious situation and considered joint actions and options for support,” said DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle. “With the forecast Fonterra farmgate milk price dropping, farmers will receive even less milk income than expected this winter and spring. That’s when this latest drop in income will hit hard. “This reduction equates to farmers getting less dairy revenue than expected this year. “It is extremely tough right now for farmers — some more than others. Farmers’ ability to survive the downturn will depend on the size of their debt and the level of their costs. Sharemilkers are one of the very vulnerable groups and so we are already currently running joint workshops with Federated Farmers to help them look at their options. “As we feared, the milk price has been low for too long. We’re keen to see interest rates come down after the last OCR cut. That will help all farmers. Many are also looking at other income they can bring in off-farm or through diversification. “I’ve met with all the banks to talk through the issues at an industry level. We are working with other key groups like Federated Farmers, the Dairy Women’s Network and Rural Support Trusts to ensure a united approach to pooling all our resources,” he says. Dr Mackle says that with support from communities, regions and the banks, the industry and most farmers will be able to find a way through the current downturn. “We have a history of doing that. We know farmers have already made significant adjustments to reduce costs. We are going back to what has helped us be competitive over many decades — a relentless focus on pasture and reducing reliance on supplements. “To help farmers we’ve been running our

Tactics campaign and other key events for some time now, designed to drive down farm system costs and provide access to tools and support to make changes in their business. “Farmers are using the obvious levers at their disposal to manage volatility in milk price — culling cows instead of using supplementary feed to maintain cow condition. DairyNZ is stepping up its personal contact with farmers with more farm visits and phone calls. We will be going up driveways to connect with farmers we don’t see so often. A series of ‘What are my options?’ events are taking place nationwide helping sharemilkers, contract milkers and their farm owners plan a path forward over the next year. The industry has renewed its focus on pasture — it is a key driver of farming competitively through both high and low milk price situations. A series of workshops starting at the end of March will see us working with farmers to focus on tight and skilled pasture management. In March and April we have GoodYarn workshops running, designed to help farmers talk about mental health and recognise the signs of stress and mental health problems. Dairy farmers currently recruiting staff for next season are encouraged to consider their options for managing the working week. With farm recruitment underway nationwide, DairyNZ and Federated Farmers are encouraging farmers to attract the best people by offering up the best work environment. “During recruitment is an ideal time to look at staff rosters,” said Federated Farmers Waikato president, Chris Lewis. “The average New Zealand farm has two or three staff and one particularly common farming issue regarding work/ life balance is a good roster.” The Workplace Action Plan, launched by Federated Farmers and DairyNZ, suggests dairy farm employees on a well-designed roster should normally work no more than 50 hours per week and no more than 10 hours per day. “It’s a simple thing but having a good roster gives employers an edge in the recruitment process if they can show potential staff what their working hours will be, because at the end of the day, we are all competing for the best people,” said Mr Lewis. “Being able to show candidates what their weeks will look like and their days off is an advantage.” DairyNZ developer Cam Camilleri says over 900 farms have signed up to use the recently-released Roster Builder tool. “The Roster Builder can be customised to your farm. “It takes less than five minutes to set-up a roster and it’s simple to try

FROM LIFESTYLE BLOCK TO FARMING BY ANN MORGAN
Rachael Foy is 24-years-old and grew up on her parents’ 70-acre lifestyle block in Waikato where she was involved with rearing calves, shifting stock, and taking calves to pet days at primary school.
“M
y parents don’t come from farming families but they always had an interest in owning land. I had an uncle who farmed and mum and dad used to graze stock for him. My mum is an accountant and my dad is now the principal of the local college,” said Rachael. “I have a younger brother and sister. My brother is a mechanical engineer and my sister is in her last year of school. A local farmer taught Rachel how to milk when she was 12-years-old and she continued to help out there on
weekends and in school holidays right through college. “When I was at high school I used to run the land for my parents on my own and move the stock around, do the drenching and work out the grazing plan. “I did relief milking for other farmers as well and I studied agriculture by correspondence whilst attending Huntly College. I also had the opportunity to spend a day a week on a farm for a couple of terms through the Gateway programme. I fell in love with farming back then and haven’t looked back.”

Rachael studied for a Bachelor of Agriculture degree at Lincoln University for three years after spending a year working on a dairy farm between leaving school and starting at Lincoln and is currently in her second season out of university. She is second in charge on a 500-cow dairy farm of rolling to steep contour in Waerenga. “I was on the DairyNZ scholarship for two years and received a Landcorp scholarship in my final year, then awarded the E R Hudson Prize for 2013 which is awarded to the student who shows the greatest promise of becoming a successful farmer. Achieving my degree was a high point in my life.”

new skills and it is a good opportunity to meet new people and expand our knowledge base. “This season is going really well — we are ahead from last season and on track to be grade free. “The decrease in milk payout has affected us and may have an impact on how we run things next season. I advise people to just do the best thing they can do for the farm. I am on wages which helps. “I believe the outlook is bright. The world population is growing and so will the demand for milk. It is important to try and stay positive and do the best you can with what you have. Being outdoors and working with animals is a great lifestyle.”

This year we used 10 hectares of turnips and rape as our summer crop. “I am in charge of the day-to-day management of the farm including the two farm assistants, pasture, animal health, supplement use, shed, milk quality, and the management of the effluent system. “I enjoy the outdoors and working with both animals and people alike. I also have a keen interest in the business, analytical and record keeping side of farming. “I appreciate the opportunities for development that the agricultural industry offers. The ability to work your way through the industry to develop your own business is unique to this industry.” Her goals are to become self employed with multiple farming ventures whether this is through ownership of land, equity partnerships or sharemilking or a combination of all three. “I am also interested in the potential opportunities that the growing interest in sheep milking may present. Rachael is the current chairperson of North Waikato Young Farmers Club and she is a calf judge for Waikato A&P Association. “I attend church in Huntly and am a leader at a local youth group, and I enjoy sport and spending time with family and friends. Joining young farmers is great for the social side and getting off the farm and talking to like minded people and I enjoy the leadership development that is available. I have entered into the district finals a couple of times for Young Farmers. These events helps farmers to learn

BREEDING THE BEST With five generations of farming and breeding knowledge behind him, Mark McKenzie knows a thing or two about cattle, and was the first person to recognise the potential of the Speckle Park breed in New Zealand, introducing them in 2007 via embryos from Canada. In 2013 he was joined by Derek Hayward of Premier Cattle Company in Cambridge and together they are the biggest Speckle Park breeders in New Zealand.

Now he and his wife Catherine run a 360 cow split calving herd on 134 hectares. The original herd of 240 cows was purchased from Derek’s parents in 2002 and included cow families that dated back to when Derek’s grandfather was a dairy farmer. Derek has been in the beef industry for more than 20 years and has worked in large studs in New Zealand and overseas. His stud, Premier Cattle Company, was founded in 2008 with the ‘Premier’ prefix added when he registered his first Hereford cow in 1993. Derek decided to disperse the Hereford herd in 2011 and purchased some top Speckle Park cows and heifers from Maungahina Stud and, by using an embryo programme, he increased his herd. In 2007 Mark made a trip to Canada where the unique speckled cattle caught his eye. After a rigorous inspection Mark was excited to find they were well structured, moderate framed and soft, easy keeping cattle. After further research he found they were easily able to adapt to extreme climates whilst keeping a number of other ideal qualities and low fat cover. “They are very adaptable beasts. We were blown away by how hardy they are. They flourish in very extreme environments from deep snow to 40 degree heat in Australia,” says Mark. “They are a high yielding carcass cattle of up to 68 per cent with lots of trial data backing that up. They have also won carcass competitions around the world.”

The meat is sensational and we are looking into tapping into the Auckland restaurant market,” Mark says. “The animals are desirable because of this marbled meat, tremendous hindquarters and they are high in muscle. It is usually very hard to find high muscle and marbling traits together in an animal,” says Mark. “We did trial works here in New Zealand and were blown away at how the progeny came out. The natural forests, jungles, savannahs and the oldest farm on the planet, the Serengeti Plains have always fixed not only nitrogen but also gaseous elements, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and oxygen straight out of the atmosphere. These four gaseous elements make up 97.5 percent of the plant’s mineral requirement. The 2.5 percent of minerals are made up of calcium, phosphorus,
potassium, sulphur, magnesium, sodium, silica, iron, manganese, boron, copper, zinc, cobalt, molybdenum and selenium all in a completely natural form, recognised at the cellular level for plant growth and development. These are the essential minerals for life. Soil and water are the two most precious elements on our planet; without these two wonderful products, life cannot exist. According to Doctor Morgan Williams’ report to the government in 2004, we are losing between 200-300 million tonnes of topsoil each year. If we continue at this rate we will lose the topsoil we rely on to furnish our income. Chemical production is not in line with today’s consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food. It is a good time to make a switch to a more lucrative market. Peak period for injuries The last of the summerfruit is being harvested and Royal Gala picking is underway, beans, courgettes and peppers are bursting out all over the place and everyone’s tired — bringing a heightened risk of accidents in growing operations. Injury rates in the horticulture sector soar during the main growing season and growers are being reminded to keep a close eye on managing health and safety. Statistics from ACC and WorkSafe reveal injury rates begin climbing sharply in January and peak between February and April. Last year alone, 124 people were severely injured in horticulture, with an additional 1,173 suffering less severe injuries. The most common cause of injuries is falls from height, including from ladders, stepladders and trees. Other causes of severe injury and death include being struck by a moving cherrypicker, catching limbs in machinery and vehicles touching power cables. “Harvesting of fruit crops at height, fatigue and the large influx of seasonal workers — many with little understanding of safe work practices and some with English as a second language — all contribute to the significant spike in injuries,” says WorkSafe’s agriculture programme manager Al McCone. “Although horticulture has a lower incidence of accidents than pastoral agriculture, the injury rates at this time of the year underline the need for growers to take care during busy times. “I think there is greater understanding in the horticulture sector about the

While a 5 kilowatt or larger heat pump is perfect for most living rooms, multiple smaller units may prove costly for each bedroom, so economical panel night-store heaters are also a popular choice. For those with a fireplace, that ceiling space can be put to work, housing the insulated ducts of a heat transfer unit which takes heat trapped near the ceiling and pipes it through to each bedroom. Investing in compliance infrastructure by Andy Bryenton
With a new year in farming comes a new round of tougher measures for environmental protection. And, even as debate rages about the practicality of implementing such measures during a ‘slump’ in global dairy prices, the call to further protect the environment is being heard.

Despite the low payout forecasted by dairy giant Fonterra, recent news articles about excluding cattle from waterways have thrown the entire compliance issue into stark perspective. What price, ask some pundits, our clean green image, if the very industry it supports crumbles under a weight of red tape and debt for its implementation? As in any industry, standards and practices are there to ensure a balanced and equitable relationship between the producer and supplier, with guarantees of quality enforced, in this case, for the best of reasons — the health not only of consumers, but of New Zealand’s reputation as a top-grade exporter. Thus, farmers are still investing in the important equipment which allows them to run a modern, healthy and qualitycontrolled operation, whether in dairy, dry stock or even in cropping. Fonterra walk the line this season between ensuring global standards of excellence in their finished product, and ensuring that their key shareholders, the farmers working at the ‘coalface’
of production, are financially secure. No matter the barometer of global trade, and TPPA notwithstanding, the rules for standards of hygiene and the temperature of vats and chillers are unwavering. It’s not just the equipment in and around the milking shed which must meet new standards. As an example of wider requirements, Fonterra now requires new, repaired, or structurally upgraded tanker roadway bridges or crossings to be certified to at least 53 tonne, allowing safe access for their fleet. Waterways must be fenced to ensure environmental standards are met, with results in stream and river purity already being felt in the Waikato and beyond as a result. On the flip side, some rivers have been closed to swimming and fishing this year due to unintentional runoff, putting water purity in the headlines. The incursion of cattle into rivers and lakes has prompted calls for harsh fines, and renewed the debate over fencing
waterways entirely. These factors, along with the machinery required to hygienically wash down milking sheds and equipment, and the modern milking systems needed to cut back on ills like mastitis, mean that, season after season, the backbone infrastructure of farms must be kept in good shape, no matter what mother nature or global commerce throw at us. A good example is the robust new systems used to treat dairy effluent — systems which turn what was once
an odious problem into a potential source of fertiliser and nutrients. In this arena, farmers have been able to work innovatively within the framework of environmental protective laws to find a sustainable way forward. With the trend toward global free trade pushing further regulation and more exacting measures to ensure milk and meat quality, keeping these vital infrastructural systems at peak efficiency would seem a wise choice, this season as in any other.

Remember how we said that the outer claw is often higher than the inner claw? This means that the outer claw is carrying a greater portion of the weight, with the result that the live tissue inside the outer claw is under more stress than the inner claw. Well, when a cow gets laminitis (a disease in the foot that damages the blood vessels of the claw and weakens the live tissue) the outer claw will suffer more because of this extra stress. So when we trim this claw preventatively we spread the weight evenly over the two claws and the effects of the disease will be minimised. If however, it has got to the point where the outer claw has become too badly affected and the cow has ended up lame, then we need to go further. If this claw has suffered more because of the extra pressure then the logical thing to do for this cow is to minimise the pressure as much as we can. Step 4: We now lower the claw even further so that the outer claw ends up being lower than the inner claw. In this

your fingernail underneath the horn then bacteria and dirt can get in there and this is just a recipe for infection. So, when you see an underrun sole all that horn needs to come off. That may mean that the whole sole has to come off in some cases. Don’t be afraid to do so; just try to not make the claw bleed. If the lame claw ends up with the live tissue exposed and you can’t create enough height difference between the two claws, then you should glue a claw block to the healthy claw. This way the sore claw is artificially raised off the ground. The theory here goes — if in doubt use a claw block. Claw blocks are always cheaper than lame cows. case the inner claw will end up taking a bigger part of the weight. You may now ask, “How will that help the cow because now the inner claw is going to be over stressed. Won’t that cause further problems?” That would be true if the inner claw had to deal with this extra pressure for a long time, like two or three months. But because the outer claw will grow back in time it is not an issue. Having trimmed the outer claw thinner the live tissue inside this claw is getting rest and can heal. Taking the pressure off the wound is the key to overcoming lameness and most people know this. We often see lame cows that have been trimmed by a staff member where the wound has just been dug out, the theory being that you take the weight away from the wound and spread it out over the rest of that claw. But this is wrong. The weight has to go to the other claw. The whole lame claw needs to be released from weight. Step 5: Finally, we now need to take all the loose horn away. If you can put

Building dairy industry skills A partnership between industry training organisation Competenz and the New Zealand Milking and Pumping Trade Association has resulted in New Zealand’s first nationally recognised apprenticeship qualification for dairy engineers. The qualification, the New Zealand Apprenticeship in Dairy Systems — Engineering, will build the skills and careers of a group of people who play an essential role in supporting New Zealand’s biggest industry — the engineers who design, install and maintain the milking, pumping and effluent systems that keep dairy farms running 365 days a year. Learners will gain the qualification through a three-year apprenticeship training programme. “The NZMPTA has been championing an apprenticeship programme for the dairy industry for many years and we’re thrilled that, with the expertise of Competenz, it’s now in place,” says NZMPTA president and country manager of Grundfos Pumps, Simon Fletcher. “This nationally recognised qualification addresses the shortfall of skilled tradespeople in the milk harvesting, pumping and water application sectors of the industry. While it’s largely engineering-based, the apprenticeship delivers a range of skills, knowledge and workmanship. “It will help the industry attract new people and offer them career paths, lift the level of skill in the industry and
set consistent standards. Employers, employees and the farming clients we work with will all benefit.” Competenz industr y manager Peter Ferguson says strong industry representation from the NZMPTA has helped the Competenz team understand the technical skills dairy technicians need to work productively and safely, and agree on the qualification’s structure and content. “Dairy is such an important industry for New Zealand and our regional communities. So we’re really pleased to be able to help the industry build the skills it needs, right through the supply chain, to be internationally competitive.” Peter says apprenticeships are a structured, proven way to build skills. “Most learning takes place on the job. So apprentices are gaining practical skills that are directly relevant to the job they’re doing.” As the industry training organisation for the engineering industry, Competenz already manages over two thousand engineering apprenticeships across New Zealand. “Now we’re extending those apprenticeships to meet the needs of New Zealand’s biggest industry.”

had a farmer at the Southland Field Days in Waimumu in February who told me he’d been using it for years and wasn’t sure but then took a battery out of a tractor that had just died and it was 17 years old so he figured it must have done something.” Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulfation build-up on internal lead plates, corroding the lead plates and compromising the batteries’ holding capacity,” and according to Gerard Anselmi, “most batteries are ready sulphated when you buy them so treating them early and keep them charged will prevent premature battery failure with the simple Recharge Battery Conditioning Programme. RECHARGE is available from Farmlands. The 500ml farmer pack works out at $4.50 per car battery or $8.50 to treat an N-70zz light commercial battery. A more cost effective 2-litre commercial pack is also available and can also be purchased on line at www.recharge.net.nz or on TradeMe. As RECHARGE is acid based it is dangerous goods and expensive to freight; the 2-litre bottle is therefore, the only one that we sell directly. The 2-litre pack treats 42 x N-70 batteries or 22

With farmers seeking economical options and eschewing needless luxury on their working rolling stock, it’s nice to see a new model in the ATV market which does not at all seem like a compromise.
Introduced just a year ago, the Can Am L series of off-road machines represented an entry level into to the popular brand. Now, after 12 months of feedback from customers worldwide, Can Am have sharpened up the L series into something even more practical — offering new engines with more power, more towing capacity, more rack space and the option to jump into a ‘fully loaded’ model right off the showroom floor. The updated Outlander L series is led up by the 570 for 2016 — a powerful addition to the range. With a brand new 48 horsepower Rotax v-twin providing the get up and go, the 570 is a step up from the single-piston 430 which is also available to L riders. With eight valves and a classically ‘bulletproof’ single overhead cam system, the new Rotax gains faster acceleration without compromising top end speed. Petrolhead purists will appreciate how this has been achieved — not through computer tinkering, but by beefing up the size of the pistons and lengthening the stroke. It’s old-school engineering,
but it works perfectly at the heart of what is assuredly a multi-functional tool on the farm. Combine that new mill with tried and tested torsional trailing arms at the back and independent A-arms at the front — plus a healthy ride height — and there is not much the L 570 can’t slog through. Is it time to call time on CEO? Reports that Fonterra boss Theo Speirings, was abused while visiting the Northland Field Days is of concern, but one can understand the anger of many farmers who are questioning his judgement and his ongoing statements that Fonterra has got the fundamentals right in spite of low prices. On January 20, Spierings told Bloomberg Fonterra would maintain its $4.60 per Kg forecast pay-out for the forthcoming season. On January 28 Fonterra lowered its forecast for the 2015-2016 season from $4.60 per kg milk solids to $4.15 per kg of milk solids. On March 9, Fonterra announced the current season forecast had been reduced to $3.90 per kg of milk solids. It is my opinion it is time to question Theo Spierings’ judgement. After watching and listening to his message to farmers over the last 20 months it is my view that he over promises and under delivers and sends very mixed messages to milk suppliers. His role as Fonterra chief executive is very important as New Zealand dairy farmers throughout their long history have placed a great trust in their dairy leaders that they have got it right. There
has been the odd mistake particularly when Jim Graham of the then NZ Dairy Board had a meeting I once attended and told suppliers that the pay-out forecast for the coming season was going to be good and yet within months the NZ Dairy Board introduced a policy whereby it would pay dairy farmers to go out of milking because of an oversupply of milk affecting world markets. It was surprising the number of farmers who took this offer up at the time. Spierings can’t use the excuse that he was overtaken by the speed of world events regarding milk supply. Fonterra has 6000 employees throughout the world. There would be no excuse for them not to comprehend the dramatic effects of the United States trade ban against Russia. Even the Governor of the Reserve Bank acknowledged this when he

As leader of our company Spierings is obliged to manage not only results but expectations because if he fails to do so the consequences for the company shareholders are incomprehensible. It is apparent that 85% of Fonterra milk suppliers’ farming businesses are now at extreme risk. Fonterra is reported in the press that it is introducing a 90-day delayed payment system for its trade suppliers. This will ruin many rural businesses that support Fonterra and the rural community. Fonterra’s 2015 financial report shows that Theo Spierings had a salary band within $4.9 million representing a $770,000 increase on his 2014 remuneration package. The statements also showed that the number of Fonterra
employees who are paid more than $1 million per year rose from 17 to 22 last year. Theo Spierings predecessor, Canadian Andrew Ferrier reportedly received an $8.2 million golden handshake when he left in 2011. It is my view that Theo Spierings has lost the confidence and trustworthiness that he had with many milk suppliers. It is time for the board to consider a change in company leadership. It could prove to be very worthwhile to offer an $8.2 million golden handshake to Theo Spierings to effect the change necessary and regain the confidence of farmer shareholders. Fonterra needs to start winning again with the CEO and senior management getting a two — word sign on every desk — I’M RESPONSIBLE.
