Latest Waikato water data goes online Waikato is part of a website launched earlier this month that displays the results of water quality monitoring for rivers throughout the country. Land, Air, Water Aotearoa (LAWA), is a collaboration between New Zealand’s 16 regional and unitary councils, the Ministry for the Environment, Cawthron Institute and Massey University. A New Zealand first, LAWA displays state and trend information for over 1,100 freshwater monitoring sites, giving the public access to all of the country’s water quality monitoring in one place and in a common, easy-to-understand format. “We’re pleased to be part of this initiative which adds to the work we’re currently doing to create a better connection between communities and their local waterways,” says Waikato Regional Council chairperson Paula Southgate. “Fresh water is a vital asset to our country and it’s important that the public can see and understand for themselves the state of a particular river

or catchment and how it may be affected by what’s going on around it. “The council measures a range of parameters when assessing water quality, including E. coli, nitrogen, phosphorus, water clarity and pH. By using LAWA, you can see how a particular site, catchment or region compares to others around the country. You can also see if the site is improving, stable or degrading.” Water quality is measured at more than 100 sites in the Waikato region. Over the past 20 years, water quality was largely stable in two-thirds of the records. Some 16 per cent of records showed important improvements, while 18 per cent showed important deteriorations. Improvements were common in records of ammonia, while deteriorations were common in records of nitrogen and turbidity. LAWA also allows people to share information about what’s happening in waterways. “Everyone has a responsibility in looking after our rivers and we want people to be able to use LAWA to tell us and others what’s going on in their local waterway,” said Ms Southgate. “People can use the site to share news, report pollution or promote riverrelated events such as clean-up days or riparian plantings.” LAWA can be accessed at www.lawa. org.nz.

Lusi provides little relief for Waikato farmers

Drought stricken Waikato farmers have been left frustrated by Cyclone Lusi, with much of the expected rainfall failing to eventuate. While the storm system provided a drenching for the Coromandel Peninsula and the Kaimai Ranges, little of that rain made its way to drought parched Waikato pastures. Federated Farmers Waikato Dairy chairman Chris Lewis says farmers were expecting up to two inches of rain. “It never happened. That’s a big disappointment.” He says farmers prepared for the rain by moving cows off pastures to encourage grass growth and buying in supplies of urea. But their preparations largely came to nought as most areas only had a light dusting. Following Lusi’s departure, he says some farmers are now struggling financially, with this summer’s dry conditions following on from last summer’s drought. Mr Lewis says that experience encouraged many farmers to prepare better and so they are better equipped to deal with dry summers. “Some farmers will fly through it. Others will suffer hardship.” And while farmers benefit from record milk payouts from Fonterra, those who suffer production losses because of
dry conditions will not get full benefit from them. Meanwhile, the Waikato Civil Defence Emergency Management Group says it is fortunate the region seems to have escaped relatively unscathed from the effects of Cyclone Lusi. There was some moderate flooding in rivers and streams running off the Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges. But no major or widespread issues were reported. Blustery conditions and rough seas were another feature of the weather but there were no reports of major or widespread problems due to these factors.

he founding team that became Pirongia Clydesdales started out as a DB Breweries promotion in 1985 but they soon became much more — they became a national icon, much loved throughout New Zealand. The Dairy Women’s Network Trust Board has announced the appointment of their new chief executive officer, Zelda de Villiers, who will start her Hamilton-based role this month, bringing with her 20 years’ experience in the agricultural industry.

s de Villiers has worked extensively in the agricultural finance and rural banking sector in South Africa and came to New Zealand in 2009 to fulfill the role of director for Customer Solutions Grassland — a global role, based in New Zealand, which focusses on delivering products suitable for grassland farming to farmers in New Zealand, Australia,
South Africa, South America, the United Kingdom and Ireland. She was promoted to managing director for New Zealand in 2012. “I first became involved with Dairy Women’s Network about 18 months ago, when I was talking to them about sponsorship and I found them to be a very inspiring organisation,” says Ms de Villiers.

“It was a hard decision for me to leave De Laval, because I’ve been really happy working there however, after 10 years I decided it was time to move on. Throughout my career, I’ve always been interested in the people side of business and the development of people. “I’m looking forward to meeting lots of different women throughout New Zealand who are facing many different challenges and working with the board of the Dairy Women’s Network to develop the organisation to meet those needs. “I believe the challenge will be in matching what the needs are and what the network needs to do. DWN is not-forprofit, so I’ll also be focussing on getting the funding to make this achievable. “I’m not a person to go in with very fixed ideas, rather I’m the sort of person to go in and get to know an organisation, understand what the people want and then come up with a plan and execute it.”
Dairy Women’s Network chair Michelle Wilson says Zelda has an exceptional understanding of the challenges New Zealand’s dairy farming women face. “The Board welcomes Zelda and is looking forward to working alongside her as we continue to expand the potential of dairying women. She has extensive experience and her expertise is a valuable addition not only to the success of the Dairy Women’s Network but also to leadership in the New Zealand agricultural sector.” The Dairy Women’s Network (DWN) was established in 1998 and is unique to New Zealand. The network’s growth has been rapid, experiencing a 63 per cent growth in membership in the last financial year alone. DWN was founded to provide support, mentoring and education to women in all stages of their dairying career and add value to the industry. The backbone of their operation is the regional groups

across New Zealand, which provide vital one-on-one contact for members throughout the year. “We have thirty regional groups from Northland to Southland convened by volunteers,” says Ms Wilson. “The convenor and co-convenor pull meetings together, organise the agenda and the speaker or maybe a farm visit. “It’s up to each region to decide what they will do for their group and how often they will meet, so some groups will meet monthly and some will meet four times a year. Most don’t meet during calving but some do. “For example, the convener may be a person who is not hands-on on the farm but more in administration and they might say, ‘I’m going to be at this cafe between 10am and 2pm — call in for a chat if you’re in town’. These are really popular, because they tend to be held on a Monday or Friday when women are picking up kids or dropping them off at boarding school.” With a database of 4,900 members, a key source of regular communication is the daily E-Digest. Each day, around 500 members receive a single file compilation of the day’s discussions, advice and insights on all manner of farming practices and experiences. The Network’s other key activities include National conferences, held annually in locations throughout the country — alternately in the North and South Island, the DWN website, Dairy Days and learning events, such as workshops. In October 2013, DWN held their first virtual Dairy Day, concerning the use of technology on the farm.

their forestry blocks for logging trucks. “Combine this with increased business confidence in other primary sectors such as dairy, and you suddenly have a lot of people wanting bridge access immediately,” says Nigel Miller from Select Bridges. In reality each bridge needs to be specifically designed by engineers to meet the individual location and customers requirements. Building consent then needs to be sought, an aspect which in itself takes around 20 working days to come through, advises Miller. “It’s quite common to see bridges on farms that our engineers would give a very low load rating or worse still no load rating, meaning they are an accident waiting to happen,” says Miller. “We have the capabilities and expertise to refurbish existing bridges or replace various components to bring non compliant bridges up to standard, enhancing their life span and giving them an acceptable load rating.”

Checklist for the machinery shed
With the hectic days of summer all but behind us, most farmers are now contemplating the steady downhill run into winter, bringing with it much-needed rain. Machinery which has served faithfully throughout hay and silage making, maize harvesting and other hot-weather tasks can now take a well-deserved break, even as new tools of the agricultural trade come out of the shed. It's the perfect time to give your machinery the once-over before it's put away into hibernation — or indeed, to take stock of wear and tear of all-year-round necessities such as tractors, quads and bikes. Because while the rains of autumn and winter will be welcomed heartily by Northern farmers this year, they bring with them the promise of mud and rust, two big enemies of farming metal. It's a well known fact — and one put into practice by most smart rural folks — that good maintenance beats costly repairs any day. Points which experts identify as especially important to check before your machinery goes into storage (or come out of the box for the new season) are lubrication, hydraulics, and rust. The first is easily fixed with an application of the correct oils and greases. The second, hydraulics, is
primarily all about the condition of the pipes which bear the brunt of immense pressure. Any cracking or perishing should be dealt with right away. Rust attacks all steel and iron surfaces, but chemical and physical means exist to combat it very effectively. The ultimate solution for rusted machinery is to have it sand or bead blasted back to bare metal, and recoated in tough new paint. Sometimes this seasonal ‘taking stock’ reveals that it's time to put some time-worn piece of equipment out to pasture forever. If you're contemplating mending the same wheezing quad bike or unreliable tractor for the hundredth time, it's worth considering that most new models boast superior fuel efficiency and added power. A move up may justify itself in the added work you can get out of a bigger UTV side-by-side instead of the old quad, or the amount of tasks a better, loader equipped tractor could perform for example. Modern machines are safer, too — a major concern on modern farms with regulations becoming stricter.

New rules — new opportunities
Under the new rules, farm environment plans will soon become compulsory in the Canterbury area and this is expected to be reflected throughout New Zealand. According to Environment Canterbury’s Judith Earl-Goulet the plan does not tell farmers what they can or cannot do but does set limits on allowable nutrient losses. The soluble nature of synthetic phosphate and artificial nitrogen are the two major nutrients that are at the core of nutrient loss into our environment and our waterways. If that’s the major problem then in a real world, rather than a synthetic or artificial world, the problem is easily solved and the change and rectification of the problem can begin tomorrow. In his book ‘The Closing Circle’ Doctor Barry Commoner, USA, characterised the artificial nitrogen fertiliser industry in its dash for profits, as one of the ‘cleverest business operations of all time’ because evidence exists that in the presence of artificial nitrogen, the natural fixation of nitrogen from the air by soil microorganisms STOPS and as a result it is increasingly difficult for farmers to give up the use of the artificial product. Doctor Arden Anderson, USA, calls it the ‘cocaine’ of the dairy industry. Nitrogen is essential for plants, so where do all the natural forests (unfertilised) get their nitrogen requirements? Straight out of the atmosphere via the soil microorganisms and that has been happening on our planet for the last 460 million years, when the first plants appeared. Farmers on Agrissentials fertiliser programmes get all their nitrogen requirements for free! Planet earth’s atmosphere is saturated in nitrogen and
this natural source of nitrogen re-establishes clovers back to the soil, it is non-evasive to the environment and saves the farmer truckloads of money. The heavy use of superphosphate over the past 60 years, according to Doctor Morgan Williams’ report to the New Zealand government in 2004, has left an average of 1.7 tonnes of locked up phosphate per hectare in our farming soils. The microorganisms in Agrissentials’ fertilisers can source this locked up phosphate and convert it to a plant available form. But what about a situation where fuel economy, traction, ride comfort and loadbearing capability are more important than a blistering quarter mile dash? Then the equation becomes a little more like algebra, and the decision as to what constitutes the perfect machine for the job becomes less a simple podium finish and more of a bar-room ‘discussion’. Take quad bikes for example. Hard working, dependable, rugged — these are all words which farmers would love to use when talking about their four wheeled ‘best mate’. A 0-60 time in the low 3s is nowhere near as important as the ability to run a load of fence battens and wire up to the far paddock in a winter squall and four inches of quality Kiwi mud. That’s why Yamaha have developed their latest Grizzly, the 550 EPS, to have less power than their range topping 700, but incorporate a host of features designed to make the rural rider’s day easier. In road cars, big advancements have been made in driver safety and comfort by letting computers and engineering take over certain functions. Stability control, traction control, multi-clutch auto gearboxes — these work well for the likes of Aston and

Yamaha have incorporated user friendly, variable resistance power steering to take the strain off farmers’ arms, and a smoothly integrated auto transmission to remove the need for levers and manual clutches. But their integration into the Grizzly 550 package is seamless, and complements the electronically injected four valve engine perfectly. Enough power for all the chores which need doing, but no excess which could be wasted as muddy wheelspin. Enough features to make a day in the saddle more comfortable, but not a gram of excess. It’s a nice, balanced compromise, and one which deserves a look if you’re in the market for a new off-roader around the farm.

Built for a hard day’s work There’s a war on for the attention of Kiwi farmers, and it’s one which takes no prisoners.
The battle lines are clearly apparent — in one camp, the trusty and timehonoured ATV quad bike, and in the other, the rising force of the side-by-side UTV. Both have their unique points. It’s an engineering argument which Polaris have been listening to closely. builders who need to haul three ladders and two bags of cement at Bathurst speeds between sites. But VE owners must be kicking themselves just a little bit right now. Because the VF is here, and it has turned up the sense of drama to eleven — right where Angus Young’s amp usually hovers. Not only has this delightfully mad Aussie’s Redline iteration belted around the Nurburgring in a blistering 8:19, it’s also packed with little tweaks and comforts which give it a gloss of civility. Inside, the dash is tastefully appointed with a Germanic level of electronics, from auto parking assist and a reversing camera to a touchscreen entertainment system with voice recognition and smart radio apps. More leather than a certain kind of expo, as well, and comfort you would expect from a top sports car, not a workaday light commercial. That’s the theme of the VF all over — and especially under that brutish front deck of a hood. Holden are ending production of the Commodore for good in 2016, according to industry insiders, and there is a sense that the skunk works in Australia has decided to
VF Redline ute — no slouch, and it comes with enough room for all your working tools as well
crank out a ute which is not just loud, meaty and fun, but which can dance with the best sports cars on earth and leave them breathless. There’s 530 Newton Metres of torque to play with, delivered smoothly thanks to a re-configured drivetrain, a sportier suspension setup and unquestionably the best electric power steering in its price bracket. The Gen IV motor up front may have less of a bellow with all this refinement, but it makes the Redline go like the proverbial haunted convenience. The overall verdict, both here and overseas, has been that Holden have
done it again. A sports car with a surprisingly low price and a surprisingly high fun-factor to rival the old Monaro. In fact, the VF’s conquest of the Nurburgring has been so shocking that BMW even suggested a ute-backed M3, tuned by the in-house nutters of their M-Power division. The posited mini wellside beemer looked great on paper, and may have had a chance of snatching glory from the jaws of the Aussie beast. But it was not to be. The BMW was slated for release on April Fool’s Day — a bit of a hint that it was all a laugh.

A SMART goal clarifies exactly what is expected and the measures used to determine if the goal is achieved and successfully completed. A SMART goal is: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timebound A common goal would be to save for a deposit for a herd or farm purchase, but without the details of how much, by when and how, they will not be able to track how they are going and may end up spending their savings on other items. One key to achieving goals is to set yourself up to win, as success breeds success. If you goal is to save a deposit for a herd purchase, have three tiers of success, $1,000, $10,000, $100,000.
Once the first tier is achieved, then set your sights on level two. Then break that down in smaller bits so you can see the progress you are making. We had Mahe Drysdale speak to the firm about how he achieved his goal of becoming Olympic champion. He worked out how much he need to improve to beat the best, then broke that down into daily improvements. Another key part of goal setting is to have a BHAG, Big Hairy Audacious Goal that makes people laugh when you tell them. If they don’t laugh its not big enough. So as you are making the daily decisions in your business, ask yourself this. Does this help me achieve my goal?

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy announced the new position for an Agricultural Counsellor to be based in Dubai. “This new position will provide further support for New Zealand exporters,” says Mr Guy. “The position will cover key markets in the Middle East and seek to advance our trade and economic relationships. The position will also contribute to New Zealand’s strategy to develop strong government and private sector relationships with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Harnessing soil biology — large scale mulching by Tim Jenkins
Mulching is something generally associated with smaller scale gardening. Mulching large scale depends on the availability of materials and practicality of spreading it. A smart solution is to grow the mulch on site. In the case of orchards and vineyards this can be readily achieved by growing an interrow sward and once or twice during the year mowing the clippings on to the crop row itself when the crop is still yet to establish so far as to get its roots out into the interrow area. The clippings bring nutrients available over time to the crop also feed organic matter in the row area that may in many cases be kept otherwise bare of vegetative cover. The amount of mulching benefit in terms of moisture retention and reducing soil temperature fluctuations will usually be limited since there is not a great bulk of clippings that arrive. Nutrients will be needed to replace those lost in clipping removal from the interrow. Nutrients such as phosphorus, potassium, sulphur etc will help sustain good sward growth and legume growth, and nitrogen fixation which could potentially meet the nitrogen requirements of the orchard/vineyard. A pasture can generally function quite well in at least maintaining and
in many cases improving soil structure and organic matter levels. If intervals between grazing can be extended there is often better opportunity for soil organic matter levels to increase. In cropping systems, there may be potential to grow cover crops that can then be mechanically rolled, mown or shallow cultivated to leave something of a mulch. The system usually requires a fair bit of refinement over years and attention to timing to get right. Internationally success with this system has led to increased potential for no-till organic farming. A book ‘Organic No-Till Farming’ by Jeff Moyer of the Rodale Institute is probably the most comprehensive text on this. Moyer has deep research and practical experience in this and has also summarised and presented case studies of practical systems with a wide variety of cover crops. Most of the success that Moyer has had is based on an efficient roller crimper machine that leaves a mulch that doesn’t grow back again (if you get the timing right on the rolling).
Some specific gems of information from Moyer’s experience include putting the roller on the front of the tractor and advice on timing the operation right for the stage for each cover crop to achieve good kill. The ‘no-till’ comes from using a cover crop to create mulch on site. Crops are established using standard or modified no-till type planting equipment. The cover crop and mulch improve soil condition and manage weeds. Cultivation will sometimes still be involved for the establishment of the cover crop in the
first place but overall cultivation is significantly reduced. In many areas there is now municipal compost available that can be suitable for use as a mulch. The main expense is often in the transport and spreading. Some vineyards and other operations have brought in material and when such compost is available, application rates to a thin strip of crop row or even to the whole field may sometimes be sufficiently high (eg 50 tonne/ha) to create a mulching effect.

Despite scares and alarms around milk products in China, the fact remains that demand for New Zealand protein imports has been rising fast and a recent visit by a Chinese government official has given some indications as to why. China’s Deputy Head of the Central Rural Work Leading Group, Chen Xiwen, met with Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy to discuss the background in which New Zealand dairy exports to China rose 79% to NZ$4.7 billion in 2013 and milk powder exports doubled to NZ$4 billion. Mr Chen attributed the huge growth to a wealthier Chinese marketplace that has outstripped the production of food in the country — despite the fact that
an interpreter, adding that China imported two million tonnes of dairy products last year “and a significant proportion of that is milk powder, and the majority of that is from New Zealand.”
In 2013, 46 per cent, of New Zealand’s milk powder exports went to China. New Zealand ran a trade surplus of $523 million in December, according to Statistics NZ figures.

Method In a fry pan fry off your onion, garlic and chilli until it becomes fragrant. Once this is done, add your white wine, let the alcohol reduce. Dice the remaining tomato, coriander and spring onion add a drizzle of olive oil to the mix. Serve the mussels and prawns over pasta, with the grilled bread and add the tomato salsa. Enjoy!

The new development, called “Resthaven Views”, will initially comprise 15 one & two-bedroom homes & a show home in stage 1. Completion of the first 6 homes is expected to be in August 2014.
