The hearing for Healthy Rivers/Wai Ora: proposed Waikato Regional Plan Change 1 began with evidence from a range of council staff and advisers concluded on March 12. “The hearings will take some months, and while it is a challenging task, it is one we are not shy of,” said panel chair and independent commissioner, Greg Hill. There are parties who support and others who oppose some parts of the proposed plan change, and that there are ‘quite strongly held views’. “We propose running an inquisitorial process and to make recommendations that give effect to national direction on freshwater management and the Vision and Strategy — a unique guiding document in the Waikato — as well as the Resource Management Act.” In response to questioning from the panel on day one of the Vaughan Payne, Waikato Regional Council chief executive hearing, council chief executive Vaughan Payne said the council has a Block one will focus on the high-level submission that ‘supports the overall policy framework, with blocks two and intent of the plan’ but acknowledged he three considering detailed rules and doesn’t ‘know of any plan that would implementation methods within the plan, such as stock exclusion, farm be perfect’. “I can’t stress enough that the environment plans, sub-catchment hardest part of a journey is taking that planning and cultivation, slope and setbacks. first step,” Mr Payne said. Impressed with dairy results

3

The dairy sector is thrilled to see that its significant contribution to the New Zealand economy is affirmed in the latest Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries 2019 report. “It is great to see this acknowledgement of the huge part that the dairy sector plays in the economy,” says DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle. The Ministry for Primary Industries March 2019 report says dairy export revenue is forecast to rise 5.5 per cent to $17.6 billion for the year ending June 2019, up from 16.7 billion in 2018. Total dairy exports for the six months ended December 2018 grew 3.8 per cent to $8.7 billion compared to the previous year. There continues to be a strong international demand for dairy, including from China. Dairy exports to China, as our largest trading partner, are up 16.6 per cent to $3.2 billion for the six months ended December 2018 compared to the previous year. The MPI report says for New Zealand’s dairy farmers, the strong production, recovery of export commodity prices and a weaker NZD should help ease downward pressure on farm level profitability for the current season.

Daylight Savings Checklist… Change clock Test smoke alarm Septic tank filter

We have accordingly adjusted our all company average farm gate milk solids payout forecast for the 2018/19 season upwards to $6.41 (including dividend). “The dairy sector contributes to national and regional economic development, supports New Zealanders’ wellbeing and employs more than 46,000 workers nationwide.” DairyNZ is contributing to a wideranging reform of the vocational education system, proposed by education minister Chris Hipkins. “We want to ensure that education, both on and off the job, is delivered in a way that supports farmers and their staff to get the skills they need. It is critical that while there are not enough New Zealanders to fill vacancies that the sector can have access to migrant employees. “Migrant employees are valued members of our farm teams. We want to work with the government to ensure that businesses can plan knowing they have certainty of labour supply.”

Taihape resident and former world champion woolhandler Sheree Alabaster grew up in the shearing world and encourages others to join the industry as a way to travel and participate in competitions.

“M

y parents Ray and Libby started a shearing run in the 1970s and dad was a Golden Shears champion and was in the New Zealand shearing team,” says Sheree. “Through the run, they were able to purchase their farm. When I was growing up mum would assist when she could, and I would help in the school holidays. It was different to the seasons we have now — back then shearing ended at the end of January, now the times differ due to a change in shearing patterns. “We used to camp out, and my main job was to support the cook and then go to the woolshed and do the woolhandling, which was called rousing.” Sheree began helping her dad at six years old gathering the wool and

did her first big stint at 13 years old. “We were on a stay out, and one of the ladies got very sick. Dad couldn’t find a wool handler, so I said I would do it. The first two days I enjoyed and then I struggled but kept at it — they were nine-hour days. Every summer I would help, it was like a holiday as you got to meet many different people and through them, I travelled the world. One of dad’s shearers now lives in Scotland, one is in Norway and one is in Wales. “At the end of school I went to teachers college, and my savings from wool handling helped pay for my degree. Eventually, I took a year off teaching and went to Scotland and Norway to learn how they do things and travelled around Europe as well. Our whole family are involved in the shearing industry.

is in trouble, you can turn the cord off for him or her or help the presser. The presser needs to press and number the bales correctly, and the ganger is the person responsible for everything in the shed and what the farmer requires. “Depending on the market you can advise them how to make the best money because that is what we are there for at the end of the day. Some have food ready, flush toilets and clean sheds for us and this lets us know we are valued and encourages us to do our best. It is a hard job some stay in their own home town, and some will travel — I have a daughter now so don’t travel so much. Currently, we have a shortage of shearers and woolhandlers, and teams come from the UK to help us. We need our young people to get involved, it is a fantastic job, and kiwis are renowned as being hard workers. Shearing is a specialist job, and you can make really good money. “There are good days and bad, but if you go with a good attitude and are prepared to listen it can be fun. We have the best woolhandling, and shearing practices in the world and sheep are still the backbone of our country. People will return to woollen products instead of the throwaway society we have become, and the price of wool is slowly coming up, and we look forward to positive things in the industry. Training is coming back, and there will be lots

My cousin Reuben is doing well, and his sister has picked up a handpiece, and his little sister wants to be a wool handler. My dad died eight years ago, and Reuben’s dad now leases our farm and keeps things going. “Dad was a show shearer and judge and mum a woolhandling judge, and I travelled with them. At 21 I started making some finals and enjoyed the competition — I went through the junior and senior grades and am now in the open. “I gained first place in the North Island Circuit Open final for three longwool fleeces and three secondshear, with 159.38pts, and am in the Trans Tasman team. I have been a world champ team member in the past, and at this year’s Golden Shears I was picked for the world champion team again to go to France in July. “Initially when you first start it is about understanding your wools and trying not to interfere with the shearers’ pattern. The handler makes the value for the farmer because what we do with it is what matters.” Oddments are anything but body wool. “Then it goes to the wool stores and has processing requirements depending on its end product such as carpets. “In a shearing shed it is teamwork — it is very different to competitions, where it is you and the shearer. Once you gain experience, you see what someone might miss, or if a shearer

Sheree will represent New Zealand in France this coming July as part of the World Championship team of opportunities for farm-based work. “My mentors are my mum and dad because they had nothing, started the shearing crew, and purchased their farm. Behind every good man is a good woman. Dad would be gone all day

ach season the family orientated couple appreciate not just the produce they grow, but the staff helping them as well at Bay Blueberries. “We love blueberries, and we have a hard-working, enthusiastic team of key orchard, seasonal thinning and harvest staff. We have a strong culture based around having fun on the job as we grow our fruit and berries,” says Marian. “Each individual plays a unique role in our team and our seasonal workers often return annually.” The company have achieved a Department of Labour approved Recognised Seasonal Employer status and been granted an Agreement to Recruit, allowing them to employ some seasonal orchard staff from Vanuatu to bolster their team locals. “We bring people in from Vanuatu as there is a staff shortage here in New

Zealand. The men who come to work with us are valued and knowing that their earnings support their families is encouraging.” Graham and Marian were supreme winners of the 2016 East Coast Ballance Farm Environment Awards where judges said the couple had committed themselves ‘in good and bad times’ to their business and industry. Judges described their orchards as immaculate, well-tended, tidy and healthy. They also commended their ‘stunning’ social conscience, excellent staff management, commitment and family approach to staff welfare. “Graham and Marian utilise each other’s skills and play to their strengths. The Hirsts take an innovative approach in and outside the orchard gate, and create relationships wherever needed to grow their business.”

The Hirsts run a 40ha pipfruit and blueberry operation, which they began in 1989 when they bought 11ha of bare land and planted 1.5ha of various apples for export. “All of our horticultural processes are based on industry best practice, and we are passionate about growing quality fruit in the most sustainable manner possible,” says Marian. “Under the Bay Blueberries brand, we produce a range of fresh and frozen products for export and local sale. “I researched growing blueberries as we had a tough season in the apple industry along with many other growers. We needed extra income, and we trialled some plants and started with a small commercial crop. Another blueberry grower at the time encouraged us at a field day when we thought our blueberries were failing and then a grower from Waikato was kind enough to give us time, advice and insight into the industry. “There has been a breeding programme here, and I like growing New Zealand varieties. Some varieties are susceptible to the weather, we grow Centra Blue, which produces well and suits our market. We also grow Velluto Blue, which has different characteristics and flavour.” Marian says there is a lot of risk being a grower and she admires people who make a go of the industry. “Blueberry growers are going through some significant pressure at present, and we are in a bubble, which has some people wondering if they should stay in the trade. There has been a swarm of people entering the industry, and this

has put pressure on all suppliers. That is one of the reasons prices have dropped for the berries. It is a case of too much product affects everyone, and some growers will struggle to stay afloat. An increase in the availability and volume of other seasonal fruit also impacts on demand and returns for growers. “You also have climate and pest issues such as if it rains before harvest the fruit will split and you can lose a lot of your crop. “We try to grow as simply as possible without being certified organic and try not to apply any chemicals to get rid of pests. We have a cover over top of the fruit, which helps with bird pressure, or we would also lose a lot of crop, these are all things we contend with.” Having berries grow in tunnel houses help the couple manage the rain and growing conditions for some of their volume. “The farmers’ markets are important to us as they are our direct link to local customers who tell us what they like, what they don’t and give us tips, particularly retired growers with industry and business knowledge.” Marian also won the Rural Women Love of the Land award in 2017.“I admire and encourage any woman that is involved in horticulture and agriculture or wants to be involved. It is hard work and certainly not easy. I am passionate about what I do and the people I work with and am a fierce supporter of women in the industry. We bring additional skills and views to the table, and I think it is critical that we support women coming through the ranks for the future.”

by Ann van Engelen Joining the local Rose Society was an interest Dawn and Barry Eagle embarked upon in 1965 as something they could do as a young family.

“T

he Rose Society in New Zealand was founded in 1931 and has clubs across the country for people of all ages to become involved in and learn about rose growing,” says Dawn. “My late husband Barry and I were so pleased we brought our large block of land as growing roses became the best ‘hobby’ we could have found. It turned into a business, and we have met some of the nicest people from across the world and ventured to places we would never have gone. “We were young, and we had a new house, twin boys and a daughter and he was a busy school teacher. In November

1965 we went to a rose show and saw a notice to join the society and decided we could do it together. We have both ended up being president and judges — it takes at least five years of sitting exams to become a national judge.” Over time the couple started a nursery and specialised in miniature roses. “The first World Rose Convention was in 1974, and we had moved into a new house and couldn’t afford to go, but knew international visitors were travelling the country so we would get the children dressed in their best Sunday outfits and take a big bouquet of our miniature roses out to the airport and give them to the travellers.”

Moonlight Lady is a favourite rose that Dawn and her late husband Barry cultivated

One couple, were Americans Ralph and Ann Moore. Ralph is known as the ‘father’ of the modern miniature rose. “They bred all the miniatures at that stage and invited us to stay with them. Ralph suggested we open a nursery as no one was specialising in miniature roses here, so we did and never looked back.” Dawn is now the president of her local club. “We encourage members to learn the facets of hybridising and how to get successful plants from cuttings. We used to grow 100,000 cuttings annually in our nursery. I experimented during the years with some cuttings using rooting hormones on one half and nothing on the other half. When using the hormone

I achieved 89 to 90 per cent rooted plants, but without only about five per cent rooted. “There have been many suggestions to grow from a cutting, such as putting them in a potato. I think this theory started when immigrants were travelling here on sailing ships from England and thought the potato would add moisture to the stem. Even if the rose sent out the odd root, it wouldn’t be able to grow into the potato flesh as the first roots are very soft and easily broken off. “I wrote two books, Eliza and the blue rose and Roses down under, and they are available online. I researched how people bought plants from across the world, surviving five months of heat and cold and often no fresh water.”

have to be ruthless — some people plant 250,000 seeds and get four that can be marketed. “We sometimes take the flowers for granted. As judges we learnt about the faults and what an ‘ideal flower’ looked like, so, unfortunately, years ago I would throw away the imperfect ones, this is a regret I have. I have around 150 in my garden to someone not feeling well even one imperfect rose, thrills them to bits. They don’t say take that rubbish away. Now I take them to the hairdresser or the butcher and brighten peoples’ days. “There has been a changing trend, and people are realising that the hybrid teas last longer than other varieties in the vase. “Roses will be around forever. It is such a special flower, have you ever found anyone who hasn’t really liked it.”

What began as a hobby turned into a miniature rose growing business for Dawn whom used to grow 100,000 cuttings annually

Dawn’s theory is they wrapped the roots in moist moss and possibly an oiled paper and added a wee bit of scarce drinking water. “One of our first miniature roses was creamy white, and when it was first propagated we went into the nursery, and on the radio, Julio Iglesias was singing his song Moonlight Lady, and we decided that was a good name. Julio did a concert many years later, and we took presented him with a bouquet. That rose was the New Zealand Rose Society favourite miniature for about 15 years.” Dawn says there is a lot of excitement when you cultivate a new rose as the seeds are sown in spring and the first flowers show around Christmas. “A lot are single roses, and the New Zealand market is not strong for them, so I throw out hundreds every year. ADVERTORIAL

Helping arthritic joints (Part 2) by John Arts

Many who contact me with joint problems have already tried joint health supplements with little or no success. We make what appear to be minor changes in dosages, and within a few months, most have significant benefits. Most joint supplements are heavily weighted towards glucosamine sulphate (GS). The reasons are that some of the original research into supplements that can help joints was mostly focussed on glucosamine. A second reason could be that glucosamine is relatively inexpensive. Older style formulations typically have something like a 4:1 ratio of GS to chondroitin sulphate (CS). The most recent research shows that the most effective compound is chondroitin, but glucosamine is also important. I started experimenting with different ratios of GS to CS. I found that a 1:1 ratio had a significant impact on joint health. I later began to review the scientific literature and found there were many studies on the benefits of CS. It is also worth noting that CS is available as a prescription medication in more than 20 countries including Europe. On the basis of this research, I reformulated my joint supplement that

a daily dose has 800mg of CS, 800 of GS and 200mg of a 95% curcumin (from turmeric) extract. In most cases, I start people on a double dose delivery 1,600 mg of CS and GS and 400mg of 95% curcumin. Scientific evidence is helpful in the understanding of disease processes. However, the real test is to whether something actually helps people. I spoke to a client yesterday who experienced significant improvements in her thumbs and knee after only eight weeks on higher doses. Plastic posts tested A truly Kiwi invention that turns waste plastic into long-lasting, hard-wearing fence posts were put to the test at the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games. The posts, developed by New Zealand farmer Jerome Wenzlick, got a thorough public work out at the New Zealand Speed Fencing Championships, part of the recent Rural Games. They are made from recycled soft plastics and plastic milk bottles and can be treated just like wooden posts, are just as strong but more flexible. Subject to the conditions of use, the serviceable life is expected to be at least 50 years. Being plastic, they are not affected by moisture, fungi, insects or rot and are not CCA treated, which means no leaching issues and if a post does need to be replaced, the old one can be recycled again. “We were delighted to debut these posts at the Hilux New Zealand Rural Games,” says games founder Steve Hollander. “They are a true example of Kiwi ingenuity taking the problem of waste plastic and repurposing it into a New Zealand product that will have huge benefits on the farm and will last well into the future.” The posts were set up alongside the Speed Fencing Championships for people to see how well they perform. The New Zealand Speed Fencing Championships pit our top fencers against the clock and each other, to use borers, put in a strainer, ram and chamfer the top strainer, run wires, insulate and put in posts. Future Posts’ founder Jerome Wenzlick was inspired to create the posts while trying to ram posts in for a

fence over an old rubbish tip site. “What we are doing is repurposing waste that could have gone to landfill and turning it into a valuable product for consumers,” he says. The company has partnered with Fonterra for part of its raw materials supply and to distribute the posts. Each standard Future Post contains more than 200 plastic milk bottles, and 1,700 pieces of soft plastic, whereas a strainer post contains 1,600 milk bottles and 12,000 pieces of soft plastic. “Our partnership with Fonterra gives us access to a steady supply of raw material from the co-op’s own recycling initiatives,” he says. “It also gives us access to a network of nationwide Farm Source stores that can sell the fence posts, and access to 10,000 farmers who are actively engaged in environmental initiatives, like fencing to keep cows out of waterways and planting along river banks.”

John Arts comments: “My latest Bettaflex formula with more chondroitin and over double the Curcumin is based on the latest research into joint-support compounds. The normal dose is 2 daily but I recommend a double dose for 1-3 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Building your own home There are laws you need to comply with when you are building whether you are hiring a builder or doing the work yourself. If you want to build your own house and you are not a licensed builder, you have to get an owner-builder exemption. Ask the council for information they have about your property they can tell you about local and regional plans, and how they might impact on your project. You might need to apply for resource consent or other permits specific to your area. The more you know, the better prepared you will be, your plans will be better informed, and you might save time and money by making a good building consent application. You could also avoid the need to make last minute changes or costly amendments during construction. Building on an empty section is more complicated than altering or renovating an existing house. It involves more paperwork and legal processes whether you build from scratch or move a house onto the section. When buying a section find out about and land use restrictions, district plan

rules, resource consents and land survey and find out about your land and whether your ideas will work, including consents or permits you might need to meet legal restrictions. Once you have got an idea of what you want to build, you can also purchase a project information memorandum (PIM) from your council. practical, and will help you and your designer create effective plans. You might also find useful information in a land information memorandum (LIM), often purchased prior to buying a property. However, it’s not projectspecific and may be out of date. Your most up-to-date information will come directly from your council.

What lies beneath Some rural buildings that may have started life in pioneer days may by now need the foundations revisited because over time piles can move and deteriorate, causing them to fail. If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an examination would determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot. Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house. Sometimes all the piles move, but more often different piles move to different extents. It causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving or may be continuing to move. It all depends on the cause. If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result. That involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to realign the house on this new foundation. To establish if there is a problem and to what extent, ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start. Repiling is a major job, and different repilers use different methods. Some cut holes in the floor for access under the house, and some lift the entire building on jacks to make room to work.

Ensure you have a building permit, other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit, so it pays to make plans in advance and discuss with council what permits and consents you need before starting any project. When doing other alterations to older homes, it is best to note that between the 1940s and the 1990s lots of building materials in New Zealand contained asbestos. Asbestos that’s in good condition, sealed or won’t be disturbed is relatively safe, but it can cause serious health problems if it’s damaged or you intend to drill, sand or break it. It is almost impossible to identify asbestos by eye. The product can be found in houses, roof tiles, old panel

type fences, sheds and cowshed material to name a few and is a significant health hazard. You are not allowed to remove or drill into it. If you think or know your house or building contains asbestos, talk to a professional asbestos removal company before you begin any building work. Removing and disposal need to be done by a licensed asbestos removal licence holder under the 2016 regulations. There are two classes of asbestos removal licence Class A and Class B. An asbestos assessor provides air quality monitoring during removal work, inspects the finished job and provides a clearance certificate. A list of current asbestos removal licence holders and asbestos assessors is available on the worksafe. govt.nz website.

Timeframes and costs Building or renovating a home can be a complicated task, and it is recommended before purchasing a section to build a new home on, you should research the section and consider how its location could affect building costs. Most new builds come with plans and are pre-priced with all costs included, double check before starting that this is the case and there are no hidden costs. Ask who is liable for extras if the builders do not do their job correctly as you do not want to be charged for their mistakes or slack workmanship. Ask the right questions and make sure your tradesperson isn’t telling you what they think you want to hear. Check your timeframes and budget are realistic and that what you want to be done is possible for your house. Verify any potential contractors’ references and if they have done similar projects before and if they can start and finish when they say they can. Ask what other jobs they are working on at present and have clarification of who will be doing the work; themselves or an apprentice or subcontractor. Make sure the brief is clear and meet with your tradies to discuss the details of the brief. Ideally, have a document everyone can refer to throughout the project, and update it when things change. Make sure everyone has a clear understanding

of the required level of quality and finish, who is responsible for what and the contract terms. Be as detailed as you can be from the start and specify things like where lights and powerpoints should go, list all the different appliances and confirm with your main contractor who needs to do what for each item. Confirm as much as you can before work starts, and make sure that anything that is important to you or that involves a lot of money is in writing. Missing information can cost, for example, if a kitchen renovation goes over budget because you haven’t confirmed with the main contractor at the outset, that you need an instant hot water tap installed and additional outdoor light. Put such requests in writing to be included in the quote. Once the job is finished, check you are given you all the paperwork and warranties relating to the work. Keep any certificates such as energy work certificates from an electrician or gasfitter, as these are needed to get council sign-off on the work.

Clean burning is best There isn’t a simple rule of thumb on how often to clean your chimney. A smoky fire without enough oxygen emits lots of unburned tar vapours, which can condense inside the flue and stick to it. “You can reduce creosote build-up in your flue with a hot, clean-burning fire produced with adequate combustion air,” said Neil Pratt of Pratts Plumbing. “However, you should still always clean your flue once a year”. Your flue is also a great indication of how your wood fuel

is performing. If the pipes are clean then the wood is good, if the pipes are filling up with carbon, creosote and tar deposits, then you may need to revisit the operating instructions and refresh yourself with how to create a cleaner burning fire. Never burn wood that has been treated or painted, as it can emit toxins in the air when burned. Make sure it’s an EPA-certified wood stove, which burns efficiently. Moreover, your chimney is an important ventilation system that allows smoke, toxins and dangerous fumes to escape the home; it is essential to maintain its function regularly. Cleaning your flue these days can be done by professional, or a do it yourself system such as Sooteater. As it can be a requirement on some insurance policies, it’s an essential annual maintenance routine to put in place.

Renovating your home

If you are renovating, it is essential to ensure you use licensed tradespeople and get consents where you need to complete your project and make sure it is legally compliant and acceptable. When renovating or doing work on your home, the more you think about upfront, the better it is likely to go. There is a lot to check and consider before you commence your project and start hiring designers or contractors, and accept contracts or quotes. Step one should be deciding ‘exactly’ what you want and make a list of everything you would like with a note whether it is important to have, nice to have, or non-essential. It will help you work out your priorities if your budget needs altering and will help the project run smoothly. Check your rights and responsibilities when you build or renovate. When you need building consent, what you can do yourself and what you need to hire a licensed professional to do. It is also a good idea to consider installing home sprinklers at this stage as this is the easiest time to do it. Unless you are planning to stay in your house for a very long time, avoid overcapitalising, or spending more on your home than what it is worth, so work out what your maximum spend is. Once you know your budget talk to people who have done similar work, check out online tools or have an informal chat with a builder or two. You will need to factor in costs for the

labour of builders, and other trades, building materials, fixtures, insurance. The cost of a policy to cover renovation work can be up to two times your annual house cover, so speak to your insurance company early to make sure you budget enough, contingency and possibly alternative accommodation. As a very rough guide, building projects in New Zealand average around $2,000 to $2,500 a square metre, though this varies hugely depending on your location, the size and type of project and the materials and fixtures you use. A building worksheet and more information are available at consumerprotection.govt.nz.

such as not running hungry stock onto at-risk crops or pastures and reducing their intake by providing a supplement such as hay or silage, or a feed with low nitrate levels, will help minimise the risk. “Allow time for livestock to adjust to feed crops by gradually increasing the allocation over time. During high-risk periods, feed the pasture or crop in the afternoon as nitrate levels will typically be lower, particularly on sunny days. “All stock can be affected by nitrate poisoning, but cattle and younger stock are most susceptible. Nitrate test kits are available so farmers can test their own crops, or samples sent away from analysis. Levels exceeding two per cent of dry matter are considered unsafe. “Nitrate poisoning can happen very quickly, so check stock often during high-risk periods and animals showing any sign of illness should be removed immediately.” Acidosis is another risk factor when feeding forage brassicas, but this can be minimised by introducing stock to the crop slowly, ensuring animals are not going onto the crop hungry and providing access to supplementary feed. Brassicas also contain anti-nutritional compounds (SMCO and Glucosinolates), but these can be managed through a slow transition and adequate supplementation. Bloat can also be an issue if feeding frosted brassica crops.

“Careful transitioning is essential when feeding fodder beet crops, particularly to cattle. The feed should be introduced to the animal slowly, and the feed allocation gradually increased; this allows the animal’s rumen to adjust to a new type of feed. “It is important to know exactly how much feed you are giving animals over this transition period. Crops should be measured, and plants sent away for dry matter testing.” James cautions against using ‘book value’ dry matter measurements as these can vary greatly with fodder beet and have a big impact on allocation due to fodder beet’s high yield potential. “During the transition period, which should last for at least 14 days, give the animals plenty of room with wide feedingfaces. Never run hungry animals onto the crop over this adjustment period. Ensure the animals’ nutritional needs are being met by providing the correct supplement with their crop diet. It will vary between different classes of stock. “Young cattle should be vaccinated with a 10-in-one vaccine before they are introduced to fodder beet.” Sheep are at less risk of acidosis on fodder beet so don’t need the careful transitioning used for other stock. While they can self-regulate their intake easier than cattle in the early stages of feeding, they should still be introduced to the crop gradually.

Marine pests rethink The Waikato public is being asked for its views on whether a more consistent regulatory framework is required to help stop the spread of marine pests across New Zealand’s four busiest boating regions. The Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Auckland and Northland regions alongside Biosecurity New Zealand and boaties from across the country have been working together to stop the spread of unwanted marine pests like Mediterranean fanworm hitchhiking on vessel hulls. “While Biosecurity New Zealand manages national rules to minimise the risk of new pest species arriving on vessels from overseas, the regulations for (mainly Kiwi-based) vessels moving around within coastal waters vary from region to region,” says Waikato Regional Council’s Integrated Catchment Services manager, Patrick Whaley. “Given our four northern-most regional councils Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty Toi Moana are also collectively home to the country’s biggest boating populations; we think a consistent regulatory approach to managing marine pests is worth considering. “New Zealand’s coastline and rich, diverse marine life have long been at the heart of our shared national identity, but as the population, and an associated increase in boat movements grew, so too did the risks of marine pest spread. “These pests threaten our incredible coastal playground and its underwater life, including kaimoana. They also

pose considerable risks to our tourism and aquaculture industries.” There are a number of potential options to consider, ranging from a requirement for a clean hull at all times, only when moving or only when moving to specially identified places, and each option has its pros and cons. “If new rules were to be proposed, agencies would also need to consider implementation implications, such as roles and responsibilities, where costs should lie and how these should be funded. TED engineering is your agricultural specialist undertaking work throughout the dairy sector including; feed system installation, upgrades and services, fed pad and feed trough construction and installation, new shed builds, earthworks and effluent containment systems. With TED having its own machinery including diggers, bulldozer, tractor, scoop, a transporter truck and a Hiab truck we can do all the earthworks, transport and lifting required for any job. Our advanced effluent containment system is one of the best user-friendly containment systems currently on the market. With the ability to complete all our own earthworks, precast placement and plumbing of the pond we can supply cost-efficient competitive prices. We design and implement an advanced effluent containment system that allows annual draining and desludging of the ponds if required. The desludging and desilting are achieved through multiple steps that, once understood are very simple and easy to follow. Firstly the effluent is either gravity fed or pumped from the shed into the sand traps. The effluent settles here with sands and silt falling to the bottom of these bunkers, settling there while liquids seep

through the weeping wall into the sump. The remaining fibre, sand and sediments can then be dried while fresh effluent is transferred into the other bunker. The sump then contains a pump and stirrer where remaining fibres are mixed and then pumped out to farm irrigators. With the pond having a walkway and plug it will allow draining for future inspections on capacity ratings. When

the plug is pulled out the effluent is drained back into the sump, and this pulls sediment off the bottom of the pond, which has travelled through the sand traps and weeping wall. The sump, however, will only drain to the current level of the pond as it is one metre below the bottom of the pond and one metre above the top. That prevents the risk of overflowing effluent.

The power of three by Andy Bryenton

Kawasaki is no stranger to beating the competition with more power. On the road, their sports bikes are second to none when it comes to laying down horsepower in a game of superlative numbers. Winning hearts and minds in the rural backcountry take a different skill set. That’s why the key number for the new Kawasaki Mule Pro FXR isn’t in the hundreds or thousands — it’s the number three. It all begins with a three-cylinder 812cc liquid cooled engine. More cylinders mean smooth power delivery, and Kawasaki is the master of the triple layout. Bike fans will remember the 500cc Kawasaki Triple two-stroke from 1968, and the walloping power to weight ratio of that machine. While this is a four-stroke engine, and fuel injected, the advantages are similar, and the legacy carries across to this new platform and new purpose, mated to a CVT box with both high and low ratios and reverse. Rather than speed, the Mule is all about torque and the power to perform in rough terrain. It can tow

more than 900kgs and pack 450 into its own generously sized flatbed. Carrying capacity reveals another incidence of the magic number three. The Mule Pro FXR can seat not two but three occupants in comfort, carrying an entire work crew where they need to go. An extra pair of hands is nice, but many, as they say, make light work. Think about what could be accomplished with three experienced workers and all those hundreds of kilos of tools and equipment. Now imagine that capacity deployed pretty much anywhere on the farm. This go-anywhere capability is enhanced by a wide stance for stability even on sloping terrain, and a shorter wheelbase for agility and a tiny turning circle. With a two metre wheelbase, the Mule Pro FXR can turn within just a hair more than four metres.

Triple threat — the Kawasaki Mule packs in an extra crew member for those big tasks and excursions

That’s tight, and it makes it easier to access hard to reach places not only

A civilised kind of beast The ute is the new sports utility vehicle. That’s the message, which is resonating through the automotive world alongside the trend that the sports utility vehicle is the new family car. As those who want to work and play hard switch from big off-roaders to a new breed of quieter, more comfortable and capable utes, the array to choose from has become vast. The ideal balance for new ute buyers is struck between practicality and price.

Refined but practical, the Rhino hits the right spot between car-like quiet and full powered utility

That’s where SsangYong come in they have carved out a niche with their Actyon utes and the Rexton SUV, climbing in popularity alongside fellow South Korean brands Hyundai and Kia as Kiwi motorists embraced non-Japanese build quality and affordability. Branching out recently with characterful vehicles like the Tivoli crossover, the company, which has been in business since the 1950s,

and once provided the South Korean fire department’s fleet has turned all of its experience and design skill to producing a ute, which can match or exceed everything in its class. The Rhino has more than a catchy name. It looks muscular and powerful, with strong lines and bold wheel arches supporting a swept-back cabin design and a large no-nonsense tray. wheel drive entry level only, the bulk of the spectrum of choices for this ute pack in 4x4 on demand and a Euro6 compatible 2.2l diesel powerplant, designed to be smooth and quiet while still allowing an impressive 2.8 tonne towing capacity. A six-speed box, auto or manual, delivers crisp gear changes to further enhance that sense of effortlessness, while great care and attention have gone into isolating engine noise and road noise for a more relaxing drive. The result is a refinement of

the formula, which made the Actyon capable and work-ready the Rhino adds further sophistication. Impressively, it does so without sacrificing any of the tech and safety features modern drivers demand. At a price which, even for the middleof-the-range Sport Diesel 2.2 6 speed manual, just touches $35k. Even better, every Rhino ute sold helps its endangered namesake in the wild, with donations from each truck helping take down poachers and protect the Rhino’s habitat.

SIMPLICITY

The success of the award winning Clean Green Effluent System has been its simplicity. We start by filtering out the solids through a patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash. This fresh green water is recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water. This reduces total fresh water consumption to

about 20lt/cow/day instead of the normal 50 to 70lt/cow/day. As we are now only using 20lt/ cow we only have to deal with 20lt/cow per day for storage and distribution to land. The Clean Green Effluent System has a unique distribution system that was designed for all soil types as its super low application depth (0.25 mm or ¼mm) can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run off. This totally automated system removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems. The super low application depth allows for

application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at field capacity. As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy effluent virtually all year round, the storage requirement is minimal. The Clean Green Effluent System utilises 33,000 litre water tanks for total storage to exceed the requirement of the Massey University Pond Calculator. Comprehensive research over the past ten years is looking positive for the Clean Green Effluent Company System. Testing has indicated that the super low application system will cause no environmental ill

effects even in the winter. The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall liquid farm dairy effluent having to be applied to land. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can contribute to millions of litres per year. This liquid has to be dealt with via your distribution system. Rainwater contribution in open ponds can equate to more liquid than is produced in the dairyshed. The patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain this problem free effluent system.

Benefits of the system • Small foot print • No storage ponds • Fully automated • 0.25mm application/24hrs • Low man hours to maintain • Low running costs • 60% fresh water savings • Fully patented system • Environmentally friendly
