“This is now the version of PC1 that is in force, but further changes may result if aspects of the new plan are appealed to the Environment Court,” says President of Federated Farmers Waikato, Andrew McGiven. “Many aspects of the alternative framework proposed by Federated Farmers were picked up by the hearing panel, such as removing the Nitrogen Reference Point, providing more flexibility for low-intensity dry stock farmers, providing pathways for both a standardised permitted Farm Environment Plan or a tailored FEP, which takes into account off-farm mitigations and subcatchment differences. “The panel also endorsed Federated Farmers’ assessment that nitrogen was not the main water quality issue in the PC1 catchments. Federated Farmers was the only pan sector organisation at the hearing. We put forward a practical, sensible and affordable framework that worked for all farming sectors, dry stock, arable and dairy, and importantly also the river. We are particularly pleased with the outcome for the dry stock sector we fought hard for. “It was the result of an extensive and expensive team effort including a lawyer, planner, scientist, farm systems experts and the farmers themselves, and not forgetting the farmers and businesses that donated towards the cause. The council hearings were run for six months, during which, the Feds team appeared three times over three different days. “We take our hat off to the hearing panel for the effort and careful consideration they put into both listening to submitters and writing the

recommendations report. There are several technical and practical issues with this new decision version of PC1, such as stock exclusion, minimum standards and rule standards that could be improved to ensure the plan is workable and implementable. “During the coming weeks, we will consider what we appeal to the Environment Court. Given the number of submitters involved in the council hearing process and the range of interests, it is inevitable that there will be a range of appeals and that we will need to remain involved to ensure that the voice of farming is heard. It would be good if these issues can be resolved in mediation.”

Cancellations of events
Following Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s announcement regarding the cancellation of large gatherings to prohibit the spread of Covid-19, many events have been postponed or cancelled across the country including the New Zealand National Fieldays Society, which has rescheduled for 10–13 June 2020. “The society stands by the government’s decision to cancel events that draw crowds over 500 in order to stall the spread of Covid-19,” says Society CEO Peter Nation. “The world may be undergoing major challenges in response to Covid-19, but in this changing environment Fieldays will remain, albeit at a later date.” Other cancellations include New Zealand Shears national shearing and woolhandling championships and the remaining NZ Dairy Industry Awards. Dairy Women’s Network face-to-face workshops will now be held as online webinars. For more information on cancellations of events, refer to the relevant event websites for updates and details. Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters says the coalition government is determined to do all it can to protect the health of New Zealanders and cushion the disruptive effects of coronavirus on the domestic economy. “Some things are sent to try us. Covid-19 is the latest. The first responsibility of any government is to keep its citizens safe and we will do whatever it takes to control the spread of the virus,” says Mr Peters. “Covid-19 is a global challenge and our aggressive local response is designed to cushion the economic disruption the country is experiencing. The government has gone hard with its health response and now we’re matching that with our economic response. New Zealand First is proud

to support the economic package. Our concern for older New Zealanders, first and foremost, and supporting business and workers, is reflected in today’s initial response. “While 2020 is a different age, we can learn from how New Zealanders have responded to other great global disruptions — wars, great depressions, sharemarket crashes and the recent SARS virus crisis in our national life. What got the country through those dark periods was a shared sense of self-sacrifice, a belief in ourselves and community. “Now we draw upon those strengths again — care, cooperation and not leaving it to someone else. During the coming months, every New Zealander will need to look out for the most vulnerable amongst us. “Stay in touch with your parents and grandparents. Help them. Comfort them. Take every precaution to keep your loved ones safe. Follow the advice of our health professionals at every turn. They are highly skilled and we acknowledge their courage for the tough work ahead of them. “We are all human and of course there will be some mistakes in this difficult journey but together we will emerge stronger from this ordeal. The government, for its part, will leave no stone unturned to support New Zealanders through these trying times. We continue that work today.”
Winston Peters — Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand

DEVELOPING
SECURE HORSES by Ann van Engelen Teresa Trull moved from the USA to New Zealand, bringing her horse training expertise with her and has helped many horses and their people have better relationships ever since.
T
eresa is a professional singer and has worked with horses for many years, evolving her training approach for individual situations. “My partner Michaela Evans and I moved back to New Zealand in 2011, and I brought my broad-brimmed hat, horse and dog with me,” says Teresa. “When I was younger, I started out working with horses and then secured a record deal and went touring for almost 30 years. I kept riding but was known more for singing in the USA and was performing at a music festival when I met the Topp Twins, Jools and Lynda. We started talking and discovered we shared a love of horses. We became fast mates, and our relationship
grew, and that is how I initially visited New Zealand.” Teresa stayed with Jools while she was hosting a horse clinic on her first visit. “She told the trainer I worked with horses. One horse was very difficult, and the trainer asked me what I would do. I ended up working with it and teaching lessons for three days and loved it here. Jools and Lynda often came and visited me when they were in the States. “Michaela is a rider and nationally recognised in dressage. She came to America to train with a dressage trainer, and we connected through friends for work. I have ridden with and learnt from many fine horsemen and women. I had

a really cushy job on a ranch with full undercover training facilities, but the owner made some bad decisions and went under after 12 years. Jools and Lynda came and supported us at that time too. “Approximately seven years ago Michaela had an accident, so we returned to Hawke’s Bay to be near her family. It has been really difficult for her, but she is doing amazingly well and is doing great with poetry and art.
“I love New Zealand, all I miss is my Dodge Ram, you could tow your house with that thing. I travel to clients between Auckland and Hawke’s Bay and focus on establishing a secure partnership with horses and their owners — regardless of discipline. “I came from having the best facilities to happily working in muddy paddocks and driving an old truck until recently. I trained with a famous horseman Buck Brannaman.

“He is the man that the author of The Horse Whisperer watched and got the story idea from. I was involved in dressage and one day in the 80s decided this is it, I am going to dedicate myself to helping horses, not sing so much as horses are my passion. “I am a problem solver, a behaviourist and help people who are having problems with their horses, or horses who are having problems with their people — which is often the case. “It is good to see them in their own environment. Horses are a unique species, and I start with groundwork. There is a lot of communication between horses that is not natural to people. They have a real sense of order. It is about movement. “If a new horse goes into a new paddock, you will see one horse will make an ugly face and herd the newcomer around. That is, so the new horse knows who yields their feet to who, because if danger comes they need to know what order to run as a herd for safety. “If a horse bites and kicks, based on horse language, it is often trying to get the other horse or person to move and yield their feet, so you know to follow them or they, you. “People often back up from their horse. That is sending a mixed message, and the horse thinks ‘OK, you will follow me’. “They are not necessarily dominating — they are establishing an order of who moves first, particularly in case of danger. Often backing a horse is enough to get a change in behaviour as they

then know whose space is whose. Once people learn how to communicate to horses through spatial awareness, it is a sweet experience. “When people learn to make the horse feel secure, it is much more fun for everyone. “Happy horse, happy rider. Follow Teresa on her website or Facebook pages NZ Horse Help Hawkes Bay and NZ Horse Help. WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES
An inspiring life — a lasting legacy
by Lockwood Smith
A funeral for a friend brings back memories. Saying goodbye to Mike Moore did just that. One was 1999 and the Battle for Seattle. As New Zealand’s International Trade Minister, I was escorted through the tear gas, weaving our way around the barricades. It was a full ministerial meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and protesters had gathered in their thousands. At the helm was new WTO Director General, the Rt Hon Mike Moore. He had just achieved the most important international role of any New Zealander in my lifetime. We were trying to launch a new trade round and Mike had me chairing one of the four working groups. We failed. Not Mike’s fault, but the Battle for Seattle, as it became known, was quite an event — subsequently made into a movie that typically bore little relationship to what really went on. The massive protests outside reflected one side of humanity — the events inside, another. In the final two days of negotiations we worked nonstop for 48 hours in what’s known as the Green Room, trying to negotiate a positive outcome. I’ve never forgotten how unhelpful the EU was, or India for that matter, and how much I missed another constructive voice such as the UK could offer. But its voice, of course, was buried under the EU.
Union leader, Ken Douglas, part of our delegation, became so worried about my well-being, that every time I emerged from the Green Room to update our team on progress, he’d bring me a fresh coffee. His thoughtfulness to someone from the opposite side of politics will stay with me forever. Their humanity sets good leaders apart. Ken Douglas had it and Mike Moore had it in spades. His was a life devoted to finding the forgotten, to empowering the underprivileged — he did it not just in New Zealand but globally. The work of the WTO has raised more millions of people out of poverty than any other organisation in human history and Mike Moore is part of that legacy. A kid from a working-class background, he grew up in Northland. His first job was in the meat works at Moerewa, but a crucial time spent at Dilworth School in Auckland had engendered in him a love of books. His reading broadened his mind and underpinned his extraordinary journey from humble beginnings to global leadership. While a Labour man through and through, it was the National government under Jenny Shipley that nominated Mike for the WTO role. As Trade Minister, I was pleased to support it, but became more

deeply involved when he needed to get the United States finally onside. He’d run a typical Mike Moore campaign, living out of a shoebox in Geneva, the home of the WTO, doing the real hard yards. He’d captured a good proportion of the member countries to his cause, but needed the US — still a smidgen prickly over what they saw as the nuclear ships debacle. My working relationship with the Clinton administration by this time was pretty good. They’d even given me the White House operator’s phone number
— an amazing system where, if they trusted you, you could get put through to key cabinet members wherever they were across the country. Towards the end of Mike’s WTO campaign, the US Trade Ambassador called me to talk about it. I backed Mike strongly. Whether it helped, I don’t know, but Mike finally got US support and the job. While we failed in Seattle, Mike succeeded in Doha with the new Development Round launched in 2001. He also successfully brought China into

the WTO. I’d been a bit involved as the first Trade Minister in the world to sign China up to the WTO. Interestingly, for two politicians from the opposite sides of the political spectrum, we’d become great friends. When I was Speaker, Mike, then Ambassador to the United States, got me up to Washington for a couple of days to work with him around the Congress on trade issues. Mike was never boring. He had a unique way with thoughts and words, and while he made absolute sense to us Kiwis, you’d occasionally see a cloud of confusion cross the face of some Member of Congress. Translation was sometimes required. Life was not a rehearsal for Mike. He lived it to the full. My head was never so sore as following evenings spent with Mike and Yvonne in Geneva or Washington. Their hospitality was legendary and solving the world’s problems invariably required more than one bottle of red. Much has recently been written about Mike’s contribution. But I think a bit has been missed, perhaps the most important of all. And it’s this. Over the past 30 years New Zealand built a unique global trade strategy. It involved not just working with our nearest neighbours on bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs), but doing things regionally as well, such as with South East Asia via ASEAN, and more recently, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) — all the while promoting progress at the WTO.
But New Zealand also learnt the hard way that at times you need to move unilaterally — removing barriers to trade within our own system, as protectionism had been shown by the early 1980s to be so damaging to our own economy. I don’t think that smart global trade strategy, so crucial in helping raise New Zealand from near bankruptcy in the early 80s to number one in the world on the Global Prosperity Index in 2016, would have lasted through successive changes of government had Mike Moore not laid the foundations for a bipartisan approach to trade liberalisation here in New Zealand when he was himself Trade Minister in the 1980s. In my experience, few other countries in the world have seen the left and right of politics so consistently aligned in this critically impor tant policy area. Traditionally, the political left has been less enamoured with trade liberalisation — fearing for local jobs. But Mike’s incisive mind saw it differently, as ultimately creating more jobs. He was able to convince enough of his colleagues of his vision for a better place for all.
POWER AND EFFICIENCY
We owe it to Mike to continue his legacy of cross-party support for trade.

THE DEER
HUNTERS’ HUNTERS’ ROAR ROAR by Ann van Engelen Early April brings on a special time of year for hunters. It is the time when stags become vocal and challenge each other with bull-like moans and physical fights for the right to mate with hinds.
“I
t is nature’s way of natural selection and making sure the strongest genes are passed on,” says hunter Shanan Harrington. “For the hunters, it is the easiest time of the year to locate stags and sometimes lure them in by imitating a challenging stag. It can be exhilarating when they come crashing through the bush looking to challenge another. “It’s not all beer and skittles, they can refuse to reply, or the wind can change and take your scent to them. Sometimes they would rather sleep than fight or move away with their hinds to protect them from others.
“Every hunter knows that as we age our priorities change, I have experienced this like most of my close hunting friends. When we were younger, the kill was the priority. Many trips were thought of as failures if a load of meat wasn’t lugged out of the hills. As I have grown older, I appreciate the experiences shared with mates and hunters we meet along the way. “I am super lucky that my wife, Jen encouraged our children to get involved in the outdoors. Sophie and Flynn are keen participants in the hunt, the camp and the adventure of being out in the bush seeking organic, traceable protein.

“Growing up rurally, they have always been involved with motorbikes, ponies, sticks, knives, bonfires, dogs and rifles. I am an advocate of allowing children to experience and manage risks and teaching them about firearms has been no different. They have used them since preschool, and they are both very
competent but more importantly, safe when handling firearms. “Flynn has shot 60–70 deer and pigs now at 11 years old. Reds, fallow, sika and a springbok on a South African trip have all fallen to his safe and pretty sharp shooting. A couple of years back we got absolutely snotted by a storm

Flynn has become a very capable hunter in his own right under the guidance of his parents
while we were camped on a ridge in Te Urewera. It was my call on the weather that led a merry band of four, including my wife Jen, up to a campsite. For the first evening, we were all out looking and listening for a suitable candidate to get turned into prime sausages and patties, however, it was pretty quiet, and nothing was seen or heard. “That night, we experienced some of the heaviest rain I have ever experienced in the bush. Our tent had seen better days, and the morning saw us heading home. “Jen and I decided to give the area another go three days later. Flynn, who was seven at the time, was super keen and our mate Shaun came too.
Flynn and Sophie have both been taught firearm and hunting safety since they were very young
Heading into the front Department of Conservation land with a seven-yearold is never going to be easy, but we were hoping he would hear a wild stag that day. “Moving along the ridge, we roared as we went, hoping to entice a reply. Things were quiet as we progressed, and we kept Flynny tanked up with food as we were going. After a couple of hours, we finally had an answer, and we silently stalked down along a semi-open spur. “There were two stags roaring at each other and we moved into 50 metres of them. Shaun moved to the left-hand side of the ridge, I moved to the right keeping movement to a minimum, hoping the wind would stay blowing in the right

direction and trying to be silent. Then, we waited as the stags roared at each other just out of sight in the thick bush for about 10 minutes — the excitement was next level. “Due to the lay of the land to move closer would have risked getting busted by one of the groups of deer. I glanced up at Shaun, and he had his rifle resting on a large beech stump looking through his scope. I saw his right hand move up and close the bolt on his rifle very slowly so that it was ready to fire. He shot a nice nine-point red, who had lived out
his life in the freedom of Te Urewera and would be fully utilised feeding our families. After the obligatory photos, we boned it out and headed for home. “By the time we reached the ute, Flynny had been walking for seven hours, but we wouldn’t have swapped the experience for anything. Time the great healer (Part one)
I recently spoke with a client who I first helped more than two years ago. He is an ex-farmer who was having real trouble with osteoarthritis in his knees. Realistically surgery was his only option. My role as a nutritional medicine practitioner is to identify the dietary and supplement options that can help. There are many factors that can cause osteoarthritis (OA). Genetics, injury, occupation and nutrition all play a part. Direct injury to joints can set off a faulty biochemical chain that finishes with the destruction of cartilage secreting cells called chondrocytes resulting in cartilage loss. Interestingly the same basic defective biochemistry is also triggered by nutritional factors. A deficiency in antioxidants, especially those made by the trace minerals selenium, zinc, copper and manganese leave chondrocytes exposed to oxidative stress, a technical term to describe free radical damage. The end result is always the same. Chondrocytes are damaged or die, meaning cartilage cannot be repaired. Eventually, cartilage thins often replaced by bony spurs as our bone survival mechanism kicks in. The body then tries to heal the problem
with inflammation — which makes it worse. Two years ago, I created a personalised nutritional support programme for my client. It included a dietary recommendation to support cartilage and to reduce inflammation. We added supplements initially at higher doses. That included my OA support supplement, which is a little different to most. While it includes glucosamine, the real hero is the 800–1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin sulphate supported by meaningful amounts of curcumin from turmeric and fish oils to reduce inflammation. This week I emailed him to ask how he was doing. His response was that he thinks he has delayed future surgery by 10 years. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Regulations spark opportunity Tightened United States rules on grass-fed milk and meat branding can be a windfall for Kiwi farmers, says Nathan Balasingham, Chief Technical Officer of New Zealand biotechnology company Zest Biotech. The updated USDA rule for ‘grassfed’ or ‘pasture-fed’ milk or meat is very restrictive. If managed prudently, it could give New Zealand farmers a market advantage. The rule, which was published in December 2019, will exclude a lot of our competitors who will not be able to eliminate grain from their feed. According to the US Department of Agriculture ‘Grass Fed’ or ‘100% Grass Fed’ claims may only be applied to meat and meat product labels derived from cattle that were only (100%) fed grass (forage) after being weaned from their mother’s milk. The diet must be derived solely from forage, and animals cannot be fed grain or grain by-products and must have continuous access to pasture during the growing season until slaughter. That means 100% grass-fed animals are never confined to a feedlot. Grass-fed milk and meat are considered healthier with better taste and flavour. Animals raised as grass-fed have better animal health, animal welfare and climate change outcomes. The milk and meat has a better omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio, higher levels of antioxidants, lower risk of E coli infection
and antibiotic-resistant bacteria and are, therefore, better for consumer health. Grass-fed cattle produce beef that is tender because it cooks faster, and the well-marbled meat, in the opinion of many connoisseurs, is better-tasting than grain-fed beef. Zest Biotech has developed a pasture spray, Biozest, that is reported to significantly increase pasture productivity. Louise and Neville Williams, certified organic dairy farmers and Ballance Farm Environmental Awards winners in Karapiro, did a trial on baleage. The Biozest treated paddocks produced 13 bales a hectare on average, the untreated control paddocks averaged just seven bales a hectare. There was a 78% increase in baleage overall. Mike and Janelle Kelly in Orongo, near Thames, carried out a similar trial and produced 12 bales a hectare from the Biozest treated paddocks and five bales out of the untreated control paddocks. There was a 129% increase in baleage overall in the Biozest treated paddocks. If our farmers can improve pasture productivity on this scale, they can safeguard our grass-fed brand, which is valuable in all markets.

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Turning the screw on outdoor chores In building and engineering, first came the nail, then came the threaded bolt and screw. These innovations changed the way materials were joined together, and enabled quicker, easier assembly of materials. Now that simple principle has been applied to affixing posts and foundations into the ground, and it’s a potential game-changer. Developed in Sweden, a nation with one of the harshest and unforgiving climates on Earth, the Stop Digging system replaces the work of spades, post hole borers, concrete mixers and shovels to create a base that’s not just rock steady, but founded on solid steel. Galvanised, and with a wide bore, their large 1,200mm earth screws attach whole buildings to the ground as easily as screwing a picture frame to the wall of a house. In many ways, they outperform more traditional foundation and in-ground installation methods. As the Kiwi operators of this system say: “We offer a clean, cost-effective, long-lasting alternative to conventional concrete foundations. Our screw piles are suitable for a host of applications including timber buildings, decking, fences, balconies, pergolas, flagpoles, play equipment and sign furniture. Contact us now to see how we can save you time, effort and money on your next project!” Why so adaptable? The tops of the screws used to drill deep into the ground are available in a variety of specialised

shapes. Want to erect a building? There is a flat, stable top end ready to take the weight and accept fastening bolts. Need a fence? Use a screw, which can accommodate a robust pole above ground. There are attachments for use in making everything from carports
to jetties. For those who want to take the backache out of the first stages of construction, the recommendation couldn’t be clearer. Stop Digging, and put a new twist on getting things done outdoors.

Compliance costs, health and safety requirements and time delays due to weather, are all minimised when building off-site. Sam Cane’s new home Building a home for the first time is no mean feat. Just ask rugby legend, Sam Cane. While juggling commitments on the rugby field throughout 2019, he and wife Harriet built their dream home with Waikato’s most awarded Master Builders, Urban Homes. Step inside the couple’s new home and a striking abodo entranceway greet you. Art adorns the walls and the Hakarimata Ranges can be seen beyond. The lounge boasts high raked ceilings with decorative trusses, completed with LED strip lighting, for height, functionality and style. “Ideas were taken directly from Urban’s Rivercove show home,” says Sam. Urban’s Rivercove show home won the 2019 National Show Home of the Year Award. Boasting a range of design features, Rivercove, in Hamilton’s Flagstaff suburb, includes a state-of-theart media room, four bedrooms, two living areas and an impressive covered outdoor entertaining area. “Show homes are an integral part of our clients’ build journey,” explains Craig Geer, Urban Homes’ Head of Sales and Marketing. “We design our show homes to reflect form and function, so clients can see the different ways to achieve the look and feel they want in a home, while still ensuring they have all the practical requirements of the build.” The role of show homes also extends to showcasing different styles and trends available. Urban Homes’ new show home in Cambridge is in stark contrast to the company’s Hamilton one. “Pukekura has been designed for rural living. It’s an expansive home that offers modern comfort in a rustic country style, and we’ve built it with a growing family in mind,” says Craig. Featuring a glazed brick interior wall, enhanced timber features and copper amenities, Urban’s Pukekura show home pushes the boundaries of style and trend. “We want to show people what is achievable within a home, but we can

On the one hand, wool carpets provide all kinds of options for warmth, are soft underfoot, and come in a variety of colours to complement the palette you’ve chosen for your decor. Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.
Wood floors were seen as second best when electricity brought the vacuum cleaner into homes. The trend for covering over the natural wood grain of our old villas and bungalows carried on strong into the post-war years, but a sea change in thinking has pervaded the design world in this new century. The unique woods, which were used to create our older, vintage and classic homes include native species that may never again be felled for the construction market, up to and including kauri. Displaying the history, the rich, glowing tones and the unique pattern of wood grains in these floors have become an art for floor sanding and refinishing companies. That’s not to say that these professionals don’t have their role to play in making other areas of the home ready to receive a new covering, especially in areas like the kitchen where years of heavy appliance movements, coats of paint, nails and the possible addition or deletion of cupboards, sinks and workstations can make for patchy and uneven floors.
These ideally need to be smooth as a bowling green to accept a perfect application of new fresh vinyl. Ironically, one of the favoured new styles for a kitchen or wet area involves prepping the old floor to lay down prefabricated wood that’s formulated to hold up under damp conditions, or using vinyl with a wood grain pattern. A good floor sanding company can begin
with a coarser grain to strip back the years and layers of paint and wear, then carefully use finer and finer grades of sandpaper media to expose the lustre of the wood below. A perfect, smooth poly coat finishes a job, which complements both rustic and modern looks, and can be paired with large-scale rugs and carpets to create ‘islands’ of warmth in winter.

Plan a flaming good winter Summer’s end means it’s time to consider the comfort and warmth of your home during the colder months, and that means laying in a good supply of dried and split firewood. While you’re likely ahead of the game in this regard after a dry summer, with ample deadwood cut down to size and stacked ready for the first frosts, how about the fireplace itself? We talked to a top fireplace installer about ways to know it’s time for a fireplace trade-up. The aesthetic design of fireplaces may have been in a state of change as fashions come and go, but the basic design has seen us right since the colonial era. A sturdy metal box surrounds a core of firebricks, specially designed to withstand the prolonged and intense heat of burning wood. Baffles stop the flames from burning directly into the metal of the top of the firebox and the joint with the chimney, which would soon heat to red-hot like iron in a smith’s forge without them. Finally, the chimney itself is sleeved within a flue pipe, which carries the smoke up past the top of the roofline. Problems with any of these parts can be easily fixed, so long as they are caught early. Firebricks can often be traded out in modern ‘free-standing’ fires, though this can be more difficult in vintage ‘in-wall’ units. Baffles should be checked for corrosion and replaced if they have cracks or holes. A good inspection of the firebox itself for rust, cracking or welded seams giving out is
a must, as is a close look at the joint where the chimney meets the firebox. Once again, this is easier done with a free-standing wood fire and may have been neglected in an in-wall model due to lack of simple access. A little-known fact is that fireplaces need their chimneys swept on a regular basis as part of most home and contents insurance packages. Check yours carefully, as it might have a definitive time scale such as annually or biannually worded into the contract.
A good chimney sweep each year is, of course, a great idea if you live in a rural area, as birds are prone to nest in the chimney top during summer. The ‘hat’ atop the chimney is the last thing to check, as it’s important that rain doesn’t seep in to corrode the joints where the flue keeps weathertight
Pay attention!
with the roof, or allow water into the firebox when it’s not in use, also promoting corrosion. A fireplace installer (often your local plumber or roofer) can take a look at all of these aspects during a regular chimney sweep, and you’ll be all set for winter with peace of mind.

Stockfeed for drought-hit farmers
The latest forecasts suggest New Zealand’s arable farmers have to date been less affected than other primary industry sectors by Covid-19 and the drought. “It is clear there are still locally-grown quality stock feed solutions available to farmers in regions hit by drought,” says Federated Farmers Arable chairperson Karen Williams. MPI’s just-released Situation Outlook Primary Industries (SOPI) report forecasts that arable production and export for the year ended June 2020 should see revenue increase by 10 per cent to $260 million. “As well as a strong harvest, increased export volumes of clover seed to Europe and the UK, and vegetable seeds to Europe, Australia and the USA, are driving the lift in value. “The overall harvest and quality of grain have been positive across New Zealand, despite hail that swept through Canterbury in November, and extensive flooding in Southland in early February. “Farmers had a good run at harvest with warm and dry weather in January and February, but the variable weather of March has the potential to hold up the harvest of later sown crops.” The next Arable Industry Marketing Initiative survey is due to be undertaken at the beginning of April, with results available at the start of May. These results will provide a more detailed illustration of harvest 2020 yields, sales and autumn planting intentions and will provide vital

information on what is available domestically. Straw, hay and grain are available to be transported where it is needed. “Feds encourages farmers
to work collectively within their own region to source bulk feed options. This approach could enable them to broker better transport deals.”

Pickers and packers needed

Picking New Zealand’s kiwifruit crop is underway, and harvest organisers are pulling out all the stops to find the workers they will need for the season — with a particular focus on attracting kiwis into the sector. Workers from Covid-19-impacted hospitality, tourism and forestry industries are invited to join the harvest as more than 20,000 seasonal workers are needed to work in kiwifruit orchards and packhouses for the coming months. “The sector is expecting a harvest of around 155 million trays of kiwifruit this year and expects to need more than 20,000 workers across the harvest and post-harvest period,” says New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Incorporated chief executive officer Nikki Johnson. “Significant volumes of kiwifruit are expected to be harvested and remain high well into April. Final picking takes place in June. The gold kiwifruit are ready first, and it is a very short turnaround to get that fruit off the vines and into the packhouses. Then the green variety will be ready, and it is full-on till early winter. “The industry’s biggest challenge is to find the seasonal labour required and avoid a labour shortage. After encountering a shortage of 1,200 workers at the start of the 2018 harvest, NZKGI developed and implemented a labour attraction strategy for the 2019 harvest, which was largely successful. “We would love to see more kiwis coming into the industry, particularly if they are located close to the orchards and packhouses, not just for seasonal roles but also long-term employment in the sector or permanent roles, as well as retirees and students seeking

work in the orchards and packhouses. Kiwifruit work is almost year-round, once you factor in all the orchard maintenance work that’s required during the off-season. “NZKGI is also working hard to try to lessen some of the barriers to working in the industry, such as pressure on accommodation and transport challenges. “We are also keen to ensure that seasonal employees are treated properly and recommend potential workers choose their employer carefully
organisation’s Facebook page, Kiwifruit Jobs NZ has information. “We welcome anyone into the sector. There’s plenty of good work available at good rates of pay, and it’s a great industry to work in.”

Dairy industry’s best

by Ann van Engelen
The major winners in the 2020 Waikato Dairy Industry Awards were runners-up in the same category last year and used that experience to refine their plan to achieve their goals in their business. Sarah and Aidan Stevenson were announced winners of the region’s Share Farmer of the Year category at the Waikato Dairy Industry Awards annual awards dinner. Daisy Higgs became the Waikato Dairy Manager of the Year, and Grace Gibberd, the Waikato Dairy Trainee of the Year. “Last year we learnt a lot about our business and identified our strengths and weaknesses,” says Sarah. The Stevensons have been 50/50 sharemilking for Sue Williams on her 100ha, 330-cow Ngarua property since 2013. Matamata 50/50 sharemilkers Hayden and Kate MacPhail were runnersup. They work on Nola Broomhall’s 62ha property, milking 205 cows. James and Kirsty Dallinger placed third in the category. The couple is sharemilking on Tony and Rosie Dallinger’s 208ha Tirau farm, milking 590 cows. The winner of the 2020 Waikato Dairy Manager of the Year category grew up in England and had very little exposure to rural life until emigrating to New Zealand with her family in 2004. Daisy Higgs is farm manager for Gavin and Maree Haddon’s 91ha farm, milking 300 cows in Morrinsville and Sam Guise from Cambridge was runner-up in the category.

Grace is farm assistant on the DairyNZ 115ha property at Newstead, milking 360 cows. Runner-up was

Chairman confirms retirement Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited chairman John Monaghan has confirmed that he will retire as a director of the co-operative when his current three-year term ends at its annual meeting this November. In a note to the co-operative’s farmerowners and unitholders, Mr Monaghan explained that his decision was the next step in the Fonterra Board’s
development and succession planning. “After 11 years as a director, and having seen through the introduction of our new strategy, operating model, and with our

debt reduction efforts well progressed, the timing is right for me and the co-op,” he says. “The board is committed to a planned chair succession that provides Miles and his senior management team with the governance stability and confidence they need to maintain the co-op’s momentum.” Fonterra said its board’s current plan was to announce a chair-elect by no later than August this year. That timeline would give its farmer-owners transparency of leadership prior to the co-operative’s director elections and allow for a period of handover before Mr
Monaghan retires from the board. Under Fonterra’s constitution, its chairman must be selected from its pool of seven elected farmer directors on the board. Its independent directors are not eligible for consideration as chairman. The co-operative also provided an update on a replacement for former independent director Simon Israel, who retired from its board in November last year. Fonterra says it is making good progress on securing a replacement for Mr Israel and will update its farmerowners and unitholders once a suitable candidate has been confirmed.

The ‘wizard’ vs the farmboy
21
DAIRY
by Andy Bryenton
One was called the ‘Wizard of Menlo Park’ thanks to his inventions, which transformed modern society. The other was a farmer’s son from Pahiatua. When the pair faced off over creating a new way to milk cows, all the smart money was on Thomas Alva Edison, enthroned as the ‘new Isaac Newton’, friend of industrialists Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone. However, the smart money would have lost. In turn-of-the-1900s Wairarapa, machinery was becoming a bigger part of farming. The leather belts, steam engines and turning wheels of wool processing machinery, and the shuttle ploughs and timber mills, which ran off traction engines fascinated young Norman Daysh. He knew that others had been trying to perfect a milking machine for some time. Previous attempts had all been made by engineers and scientists who did not have his practical experience. As a Kiwi farmhand, Norman was all too familiar with milking cows, and he knew that contraptions that hurt or scared the animals would be useless in the shed. Thomas Edison had fixed his sights on various designs, in an attempt to do for dairy what others had done before him for grain with the combine harvester. The inventor of the record player and the light bulb examined ideas with rollers,
gripping automaton ‘hands’, pulsators and many other concepts. None was practical in the reality of the farmyard, where complicated machines could be kicked to pieces or contaminated with dirt, and anything that spooked the cattle would cause more harm than good. Contraptions with belts, springs and tanks for the cow to wear were rejected out of hand. Enter Daisy, the first cow to experience a modern milking machine. In the farm kitchen of Norman Daysh, this pioneering animal was the test subject for his final development. It was a milking machine of the kind we know today, vacuum-powered, with cups that mimic the action of a suckling calf. Daysh took out a swathe of patents, then set off for New York, where the DeLaval company accepted his idea with open arms. They have been quoted as saying that “What Norman
Daysh achieved remains the basis of our company today”, and worked with Daysh to release a revolution in farming in 1917. The farmer’s son from the back blocks beat Edison, who was thankful
for the advancement even if he didn’t win the race. In his later years, he swore by fresh milk as a health tonic, and Norman and DeLaval’s creation kept it in ready supply.

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER
Robots among us for 25 years In 1995, Husqvarna took the first step into a new product segment with the launch of the world’s first robotic lawnmower, the Husqvarna Solar mower. It started to change the way lawns are maintained all over the world. To highlight a quarter-century since this breakthrough, Husqvarna is giving away a single, strictly limited-edition model of their latest Automower 315X. “We’re very proud to have developed the category to reach this business milestone and to release a limited edition 315X to mark the occasion,” says Sofia Axelsson, vice president of Husqvarna Division’s consumer unit. “With Husqvarna Automower, we’ve been determined to continuously innovate our solutions in order to lead the category forward, and we’re excited about what the future holds for robotic mowing.” In 1992, Bengt Andersson, the Husqvarna CEO at the time, saw the potential in robotic mowing and formed a group of engineers who developed what would become the first Husqvarna robotic mower — the Husqvarna Solar mower. Three years later, the company released its first generation of Husqvarna Automowers, robotic mowers, which returned to a grid-connected charger. That made it possible to mow the lawn around the clock and regardless of the weather. The mower knew when the battery required charging and returned automatically to the charging station. The second generation of Husqvarna Automower was introduced in 2003 and featured a new design and a

number of improvements. Later, other models based on this platform were launched, including a mower that could manage lawns up to 6,000m2 and a hybrid mower with both solar cells and battery. The third generation Husqvarna Automower platform arrived in 2011. Five years later, the Husqvarna Automower 430X and 450X were introduced, both equipped with GPS theft tracking, GPS assisted navigation and LED headlights. In 2019, the first all-wheel-drive robotic mowers were launched; Husqvarna’s Automowers are the quiet advance guard of the the Husqvarna Automower robotics revolution, helping make lawn care stress free 435X AWD for residential customers and the 535 AWD for a professional chainsaw brand, into professional customers. WHEELS ADVERTORIAL
Motorcycles’ needs met NV Motorcycles has come a long way since they started in 2006, from a small ex-panel beating workshop in Thames Street, Morrinsville to a brand-new purpose-built building at 85 Avenue Road, South Morrinsville. Selling the family home gave Nick and Vicki Kampenhout the necessary capital to start their own business. Back then, Nick was the only staff member most of the time, with Vicki working in Hamilton five days a week, and spending Monday in their new business. “We shifted to new premises in 2009, but 10 years later we realised they had outgrown it. It was too small, too cluttered, and we couldn’t display anything properly. One of the worst things was the lack of parking,” says Nick. “We had bought land in Avenue Road, alongside the Top Pub, four years ago. I had a few whiskies one night and drew up plans for the new showroom and workshop.” They approached Ryan Mason from KiwiSpan Waikato regarding the project. “We wanted it to look good, and be welcoming, but we didn’t want it to be so perfect that our clients would be worried if they had mud on their boots. It needed to look professional, but be down to earth,” said Vicki.
SAFETY FIRST
“From humble beginnings in 2006, NV Motorcycles now has nine full-time and three part-time staff members. We shifted into our new premises on February 6 and are ready to continue with our motorcycle passion and provide customers with a great place to have their bikes serviced or to purchase their new motorcycle. “We are dealers for Husqvarna motorcycles, Moto Guzzi and Can-Am off-road vehicles. “Our highly trained staff are fully qualified and equipped, having all the diagnostic equipment on board to meet your needs — with convenient opening hours for vehicle servicing. “Our service department offers warrant of fitness checks, race set up, suspension servicing and restorations. We service all makes and models and have specialist diagnostic equipment. We do insurance claims/repairs, prepurchase inspections, sell road/off-road and racing tyres and do battery testing. “We look forward to seeing you in-store.”
