Over the past five decades, the event has grown significantly and is now the largest agricultural event in the Southern Hemisphere. New Zealanders attend in large numbers, travelling from the top of the North Island and the bottom of the South. They are attracted to the fourday event for many reasons as Fieldays appeals to families, farmers and urban dwellers alike — providing a mix of fun, education, commerce and insights into the latest agricultural trends and inventions. It is a great place to do business or check out the latest farming innovations, products, equipment and ideas. It’s a chance to catch-up with others in the rural section, and share ideas to improve farm business. This year’s theme is the future of farming, which will look at agricultural trends and ideas for the future, and celebrate the contribution Fieldays has made to the agricultural industry since its inception. There is so much to see and do, from the Innovations Centre and the

Careers and Education programme to the Health and Well-being Hub. The Fieldays Kitchen Theatre will showcase the evolution of Kiwi cuisine, with some of the country’s best chefs cooking and talking about food. Entertainment includes the Tractor Pull and the revamped Rural Bachelor competition — now named Rural Catch — featuring both female and male competitors. Add to that the traditional fun of the fair, with food and on-site entertainment and a fairground atmosphere, running for four days, from June 13 to 16, on a 114-hectare site at Mystery Creek near Hamilton. It is definitely not to be missed! Fieldays is run by the New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays Society, a charitable organisation founded in 1968 to advance the primary industry. In 1969, the first New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays was held at Hamilton’s Te Rapa Racecourse. That first event saw about 10,000 visitors, and that’s grown hugely the over years. Last year a record 133,588 people visited Fieldays including delegates from more than 40 countries. As seen at Fieldays®

New regime for primary industries

3

by Ann van Engelen

The government’s signalled changes to the Ministry for Primary Industries to create four new branded business units have now taken effect in fisheries, forestry, biosecurity and food safety. Dan Bolger has been appointed as the head of Fisheries New Zealand. He will also retain his existing role of deputy director-general, Fisheries. “Fisheries New Zealand will lead our management system to ensure the sustainability of our fish stocks and play a key role in protecting the marine environment, and will set science-based rules, monitor our fisheries and lead engagement with everyone who has an important stake in our fisheries,” said Mr Bolger. MPI remains the competent authority for all trade activity in the primary industries and work carried out internationally will remain associated with the MPI brand. “You will start to see the Fisheries New Zealand brand rolled out around the country over the remainder of the year. Our website has a dedicated presence for Fisheries New Zealand, which you will be able to find at fisheries.govt.nz.” The first step in re-establishing a forestry service was launched in Rotorua with prime minister Jacinda Ardern and regional economic development minister, Shane Jones at the launch of Te Uru Rakau where the name and new branding was unveiled. “This government has been clear about its commitment to New Zealand’s

forestry sector and the One Billion Trees planting programme,” said Mr Jones. “I believe Te Uru Rakau will play a key role in supporting and promoting our vision for a flourishing forestry sector, delivering sustainable jobs in our regions, forestry workforce development and training and economic growth while helping meet our country’s climate change targets. Mr Jones says Te Uru Rakau will build a strong and dedicated forestry presence in Rotorua, recognising that Rotorua is at the heart of the forestry sector in New Zealand. “Forestry is our third largest export earner — with an annual gross income of about $5 billion — and has the potential to grow. I am pleased to be able to announce that Budget 2018 will set aside $15 million of operating funds to boost the capability of the new service, enabling it to work with landowners, provide forestry expertise and deliver on the government’s forestry objectives. Food Safety New Zealand was established along with Biosecurity New Zealand. “In the spirit of hospitality, our food safety system cares for the people producing and processing food, as well as those consuming it. It protects

To make the BEST of your produce, you need the BEST equipment!

consumers at home and abroad by ensuring that food grown, harvested, imported, processed, transported, stored, exported and sold is safe to eat,” says Agriculture and Biosecurity minister, Damien O’Connor. “The integrity of the food safety system is particularly important to New Zealand because we are a nation of food producers and exporters, and we are trusted across the globe. “I have asked New Zealand Food Safety to work on five priorities to make compliance easier for businesses — particularly for small, regional or rural food businesses including providing guidance to market stallholders, rolling out templates to reduce costs and allowing those operating under several food safety laws to have one plan. On the new Biosecurity unit, MPI is continuing an intense programme of work with farming sector groups about the next best steps in the response — including containment and phased eradication. “Testing to date shows all infected properties are connected in some way. The tracing of Mycoplasma bovis is made harder by the poor use of the

Dan Bolger, head of Fisheries New Zealand

national animal tracing system. We could have tracked this more quickly if the system had been used properly. We will make changes to the NAIT system,” says Mr O’Connor. MPI and DairyNZ have boosted the number of people working directly with farmers to assist in that process.

It’s not that you are necessarily lonely on-farm, but you need to socialise and make friends.” Andrew has competed in four young farmer contests and helped organise one at district level. “This farm is a pretty typical runof-the-mill low input property. We milk twice a day milking until the end of the season. “This is my first year entering regional level — the competitions are fun and you get to try things outside of your experience. I have done better at each competition and having a go at the regionals is exciting. It is good to focus on the health and safety aspect for the

grew up on a sheep and beef farm and my goal is to own a farm, and the best opportunity to do this was to pursue the dairying industry. I started as a farm assistant on an 800 cow farm and have moved up through the system,” says Andrew. “I am currently lower order sharemilking 230 cows on an 86ha platform and grow maize on-farm. We move some of the young stock around and house a few beef cattle on the smaller paddocks.” The 22-year-old is studying a diploma in agribusiness management through PrimaryITO. “I always aim to do the best I can and enjoy being a part of the Young Farmers Club. My siblings are in young

competitions — you need to get those 100 per cent correct and it’s great for brushing up on your knowledge. “It makes you put effort in, like driving a digger and studying fertilisers, that you possibly don’t have a lot of knowledge on. We are seeing more girls coming through too, which I believe is a good thing. I think other people outside of farming should have a go competing too if they have an interest in it — they may become a farmer after trying it out. “Early morning starts are great — to be honest watching the sun rise in the cowshed is a cool thing and working with animals is great. I have a favorite cow, even though I have only been on this farm for a year — she’s a good producer. “For our calving cycles I check the stock every night, because it makes it easier for prevention of getting calves mixed up. “You could look at all the negatives, like we had an extremely wet spring, even the tanker track went under water, but it dried out. You need to realise there are a lot of good things and the good definitely outweighs the bad. “The farm owners have been here for a good length of time and have kept the farm well maintained, so there isn’t a lot of fencing and things that I need to do. They take care of the silage and feed — I stick to the milking and animal care.” “Outside of farming, I used to do cycling and did lake Taupo and Taranaki rides — the plan is to do Taupo again in November and Taranaki next January. “I help my parents on their farm as well in Wharepapa South — they have rocks there and we enjoy tramping around them. I enjoy duck shooting and trout fishing — these things give me something to do off-farm. “When out shooting it is important to focus on firearm safety and don’t break the game rules. Often problems occur when people don’t realise the rules.

Encouraged by his parents, Andrew grew up watching FMG Young Farmer of the Year and enjoys being a member of the club now

“When fishing it is not about harvesting a lot of fish, it is about the sport and skill. It is relaxing to get off-farm, as it refreshes you, and it is important to keep the work/life balance right.” Andrew’s plans are to progress to 5050 sharemilking and eventually get back to sheep and beef farming. “I enjoy sheep and beef, as I grew up doing it, and it is still a love. The opportunities dairying have is great for progression and to build equity — I couldn’t see that in sheep and beef. “It is how my parents got established,

so I figured I would follow in their steps — there are more bigger farms out there and it is a corporate industry, so potentially less 50-50 jobs. Opportunities are presented different now to previous generations, but we get the same outcome.”

Father and daughter team John and Effie McLay are not only growing microgreens but also have the very important job of raising the next generation on their quarter acre urban farm.

by Ayla Miller

W

hen Effie had her son Luka she knew one thing for certain — she wanted her work to fit around raising her son. “The idea of the urban farm started when Luka and I moved to Hamilton when he was two months old. I knew I wanted to work from home so I could incorporate him,” says Effie. “I was really, really determined to find a way to make money in a holistic way. Some friends, who own a cafe, suggested growing microgreens because they have become quite popular. You can make quite a bit of money, and you can do it in an urban setting. We tried it out — they were amazingly popular.” Microgreens are quite simply the first two leaves

of any edible vegetable plant and are grown for their visual appearance and complex flavours. John had been a lawyer for 25 years and was looking for a change. Since his daughter was now back home on the land she grew up on — he decided it was a good opportunity to join her in this venture and they called it Hamilton East’s Urban Farm. “As a family, we often discussed how to make the most of our 1,000 square metres. We thought it was a shame to have this piece of land just covered in grass. As we talked more about it we decided to develop this business so we could have three generations living and working together. Although Luka is only

two, if this works long term, then he will grow up in the middle of it. Even now Luka does a bit of kale harvesting, and rearranging of microgreens he thinks should be somewhere else.” Effie, John and of course Luka are now familiar faces at the Hamilton Farmer’s Market where they sell their popular salad mix and microgreens. On a good day around 2,000 people visit their stall and most weeks they sell out of produce. They also supply two cafes — although they much prefer the face-to-face interaction that a market environment provides. “The market is so much more personal,” says John. “You can actually see people’s faces light up when they see our produce.” They both agree they couldn’t do it without the help

of John’s wife Sarah, who takes care of Luka when they have to get up early to get to the market. “She makes Luka breakfast, gets him ready and brings him down at a more reasonable hour.” For John and Effie microgreens isn’t just about making a living. To them, growing microgreens is an art, and they both enjoy experimenting with different vegetables. “We are always trying new things, trying to improve it and make the flavour more intense.” John says as with any art there is a very real aesthetic side to it, which is why they always make up a colourful mix. “As well as tasting good — it’s nice to have something that looks good as well.”

For Effie, starting a business as a new mother wasn’t easy but she was determined. The biggest hurdle, she says, has been time management and dividing time between the farm and Luka. However, between the three of them, they have worked out a system. “Starting a business with a very young child for me was huge. Dad will work when I’m busy, and we swap.” Both John and Effie agree the most rewarding part is undoubtedly selling their produce at the market and getting positive feedback from their customers. “I enjoy it when customers are genuinely enthused and inspired about what we are doing,” says Effie.

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS CELEBRATED BY ANN VAN ENGELEN In 1969, the first New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays was held at Hamilton’s Te Rapa Racecourse, known as the Town and Country Fair, with the aim to bring the rural and urban community together to celebrate the contribution New Zealand’s farming industry makes to the economy.

N

ow known as Fieldays — it is on many people’s calendars, with thousands descending on Mystery Creek each June. Celebrating 50 years, celebrations kicked off at its first home, Te Rapa Racecourse where the Fieldays were housed in its first two years, before the event was moved to its current location at Mystery Creek in 1971. Local politicians and district mayors, agricultural leaders, past and present presidents and members of the New Zealand National Fieldays Society, Waikato Racing Club members and other

guests, relived the early days and the unveiling of a specially commissioned anniversary sculpture. Many who attended the event were responsible for organising the inaugural Fieldays, including John Kneebone, who first sparked the idea for a town and country fair in New Zealand on a trip to the UK as a Nuffield scholar. A backdrop of photos and film of Fieldays throughout the decades were on show. “The organisers at that first event thought they’d have a couple thousand people turn up — but more than 10,000

did with cars parked all the way up Te Rapa Straight, which was farmland back then,” said New Zealand National Fieldays Society CEO, Peter Nation. “I can only imagine the state of the racecourse after the first day, with all those people trampling across it. We’re very grateful for that early relationship with the racing club, a relationship we’re still proud to have.” Originally there were six farmers of the Fieldays Society whose tenacity and perseverance paved the way for the event to become the premiere agricultural showcase it is today, contributing half

a billion dollars to the global economy each year. “Those first six farmers approached ANZ in North Hamilton for a 100 per cent loan of $62,500 — $430,000 in today’s money, so they could move Fieldays to Mystery Creek. At the time, Mystery Creek was a rundown dairy farm, but had been identified as the site to house the event for future growth. “The story goes that they were asked what security they had for the loan, and one of the farmers threw a roll of copper wire on the bank manager’s desk and said, ‘this is the only asset we own’.”

That wire had been used for communication at Fieldays over the loudspeakers at Te Rapa Racecourse, where it was removed each year and put into storage for safekeeping. An anniversary sculpture was unveiled at the event, entitled Origin ‘68, and incorporates the same copper wire, mounted on the reclaimed native timber that once lined the society’s original boardroom. “The copper in the sculpture is very important,” says Mr Nation. “It’s not only a valued commodity, but it signifies communication and the transfer of information, relationships and collaboration,” he says. “It also speaks to that number eight wire

mentality — that Kiwi way of just getting it done. “It’s important the sculpture be for everyone to enjoy, because Fieldays is a chance for everyone to get together and celebrate agriculture as a fantastic, integral part of New Zealand’s lifestyle and economy.” Auckland-based sculptor and jewellery designer, Cherise Thomson, was delighted to work on a sculpture of such significance. She placed second in Fieldays’ No.8 Wire National Art Awards in 2016 with her wire sculpture Korowai, and was a finalist again in 2017. “It was such an honour to be chosen,” she says. “The 12 copper loops, framed with native timber, is a tribute to the seasonal

life of farming, and the dedication of Fieldays’ volunteers and staff. I wanted the sculpture to represent the cycle of interconnectedness, inspiration and growth that has made Fieldays what it is from the founders’ original vision 50 years ago.” Origin ’68 will be at Waikato Museum as part of the 50th anniversary Fieldays exhibition in May. The event is one of many planned in the lead-up to celebrate Fieldays’ anniversary June 13. This year’s theme is the ‘future of farming’, with visitors and exhibitors encouraged to discuss what the future of farming means to them. For more information visit fieldays.co.nz

NAIT improvements begin

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES May 2018

11

Work to improve New Zealand’s animal tracing system has begun after the release of the year-late report on the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) system.

“Officials have worked through the 38 recommendations and advised 23 can be implemented promptly by the management agency OSPRI,” says Agriculture and Biosecurity minister, Damien O’Connor. “NAIT has let us down in a time of great need as we manage the Mycoplasma bovis outbreak. The hunting down of Mycoplasma bovis has been slowed by the poor uptake of NAIT. For the minority of farmers who fully complied with NAIT, the tracing of animals for Mycoplasma bovis has been smooth. This is why it’s crucial we fix the system. NAIT is hard to use, and farmers have not been told of the benefits of compliance.’’ The 23 changes include: the NAIT number will be assigned to a particular location — not a person, the NAIT

interface will be improved to make it easier to enter information. A mobile app will be developed for use in the field, and the performance of accredited agencies will be better managed, particularly those providing information to NAIT on behalf of farmers. “I have asked officials to take a tougher approach to NAIT compliance, and the Ministry for Primary Industries will work with OSPRI to do this. As an interim measure, MPI’s animal welfare officers will carry out NAIT enforcement as part of their regular farm visits,” said Mr O’Connor. “Farmers need to play their part by ensuring they meet their legal NAIT obligations. MPI will also work with OSPRI to identify appropriate performance targets that will allow

regular monitoring and evaluation of the scheme’s performance. “Most of the remaining 15 recommendations require regulation or legislation change to implement. Officials will consider whether transporters should have a formal role in the NAIT scheme and the timing for bringing in other animal species. “We need a modern and robust animal tracing system to keep our primary sector and economy safe. There will be consultation before we move any further on the remaining recommendations.”

Part 2 Last week we saw that damage to specialised cartilage cells called chondrocytes was the first step in the development of osteoarthritis (OA). Research suggests that chondrocytes can be damaged by physical damage from accidents or gradually probably from insufficient dietary antioxidants. Cartilage is a tough matrix that includes living chondrocytes. The matrix of cartilage is a combination of proteins (mostly collagen), glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and water. The most abundant GAG is chondroitin sulphate. In my opinion, adding correct amounts of high-grade chondroitin is the single most important part of OA therapy. Cartilage is 80% water, which is why it acts as a shock absorber. GAG such as chondroitin readily attracts water. This is an important reason to stay well hydrated — a real problem with our ageing population. Cartilage then has two main components. What you see is the tough cartilage matrix. What you don’t see is the tiny chondrocytes tucked away in tiny cocoons called lacunae. When working properly, chondrocytes act like repair kits for cartilage. They actively

secrete new cartilage matrix when damaged or worn. My nutritional therapy for OA is firstly based on protecting chondrocytes by adding antioxidants. These include curcumin from turmeric but others such as trace minerals like selenium and grape seed extract. We then add compounds that help stimulate chondrocytes to make cartilage especially chondroitin but also glucosamine. I have one client who had a damaged shoulder and hip. Both caused him real problems. We increased antioxidants and added my joint complex, and he reports he is largely pain-free. I like to initially add 1500mg of both chondroitin and glucosamine with about 400mg of 95% curcumin extract (from turmeric). This is usually sufficient to start the healing process and often bring significant relief. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Real Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After more than ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”. Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Inversion helps to:

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

• Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the talking”

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

15

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns This is pure logic, if a machine is out of quality of life alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when machine is that the body is constantly muscles are stressed they become tight repairing itself, however if the wear and which restricts the flow of blood and lymph tear on the body is greater than the body’s through the muscles so toxins build up, ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. BACK or NECK PAIN? Here in New Zealand,

Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse. Dr Kanji endorses Inversion as the best method to manage back pain, he has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”. *Dr Kanji does not recieve royalties from the sale of Teeter Inversion Tables

BUSINESS PROFILE

From the Outback Thirty-five years ago, Outback founder, Wilson King visited down under spending time working in New Zealand and various Australian states, on farms, ranches and visiting urban areas along the way. Upon his return to the USA, he took the Outback concept and his Oilskin Duster and developed his own range of outdoor apparel. Initially, this consisted of oilskin garments manufactured from genuine Australian 12oz oilskin fabric. The Outback Duster soon became the signature trademark of the company and remains so today — along with the genuine Australian oilskin fabric. Oilskin is the lifeblood of our business — think of the ingenuity that was used centuries ago to make the first oilskin sailcloth. Over time the technical

properties have developed ten-fold to create the quality product we have today. Some cloths are merely coated in wax, which can easily be scratched off the surface leaving no protection from the elements at all. Our Australian oilskin is produced from 100 per cent cotton. Each strand is wax coated then woven into the loom of fabric, thus making Outback’s oilskin cloth completely waterproof. This has been given a 10,000 hydrostatic head rating. domed or zipped opening, we believe our products are affordable, reliable and unique — they work and our customers appreciate this. Recently Outback has introduced Marshall Cloth fabric, a lighter-weight version to the traditional 12oz cloth but just as waterproof and durable as the heavy stuff. By incorporating some polyester into the thread construction, we have produced a cloth that is 40 per cent lighter and at least 20 per cent more waterproof than our traditional fabric.

We have taken two years to develop and test this new cloth. It is fantastic, and we now offer all of our women’s and a few new men’s garments in this cool fabric. We have a great seasonal fashion range and extensive range of Outback Hats and back it all up with our oneyear performance guarantee covering manufacturing defects, and you will see why our customers keep coming back — our quality is not negotiable. Rusty the Velvetleaf hunter

Clear View Agistment

Rusty is a trained Velvetleaf tracker dog and he is often used by councils to hunt out the pest plant in known infested paddocks. Rusty was trained by owner John Taylor, specifically to track down the Velvetleaf plant and they have recently been working in Waikato, Auckland and Bay of Plenty, and did a day’s tracking in Hawke’s Bay before going to the Manawatu. “Landowners and rural contractors should be looking around gateways and the first 3-4 rows of crops for signs of velvetleaf. If they spot this plant, they need to notify us for advice to avoid crop loss,” said Waikato Regional Council’s biosecurity pest plants team leader, Darion Embling. Seedlings are vigorous, with plants left untouched, growing rapidly in the first few weeks after germination. Its leaves are heart-shaped and velvety to the touch, and have a distinctive smell when crushed. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council had Rusty check out previously affected or high-risk paddocks in Pakipaki, Nuhaka and Tutira to seek out new seedlings. At a paddock in Pakipaki, Rusty ran across the ground and would stop

Each plant that was found was recorded using GPS for future monitoring and grubbed them out — one plant found was already flowering. Burners from Bakewell by Ann van Engelen

Based in Tauranga the team behind Bakewell Burners is a family-owned and operated business. “Wayne is an engineer, and we couldn’t find anything suitable for our own patio. The market was very limited, so Wayne invented the ones we have on the market today, and we build them ourselves,” says Glyn Bakewell. “Our designs are unique because they are portable and on wheels. There is nothing else like them. The ‘camper’ can be taken away to camping, hunting, fishing or the bach. They are lightweight and dismantle easily. They fit into the fire box making transporting simple, particularly if you are getting helicoptered into hunting blocks. A lot of motorhomers use them because they are compact and store well. “As well as keeping you warm, you can cook your meals, and have readily available hot water at all times for hot drinks and doing dishes. There is an optional feature of the clothes drying rack to enable you to dry wet gear.” The ‘camper’ has removable legs, a two-piece flue, side plate and water box. It is made of aluminium and stainless steel and will not rust — giving years of trouble-free enjoyment. The units are great for home BBQs and family events where children can enjoy cooking sausages or roasting marshmallows. “Our outdoor fireplaces are also appreciated by many. Also on

Being constructed of aluminium, they also will not rust. “You will be able to cook pizzas or your favourite dishes by either frying

Climate change report launched

A new report shows how climate change will impact on New Zealander’s health over the next 50–100 years, and makes a case for better preparation. “Our climate is changing, and how this impacts on people’s health will also change. We need our health system to be better prepared to deal with increased temperatures and more extreme weather events,” said Associate Minister for Health, Julie Anne Genter. The report was commissioned by the Ministry of Health and published by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research. “The risks outlined in this report show why we need to act to reduce climate

pollution now, as well as prepare for the level of climate change that is already set to happen. “The flooding and evacuation of Edgecumbe caused serious disruption to people’s lives. Already this year we have seen how a storm like cyclone Fehi caused a state of emergency in Buller and Dunedin.” The report maps out where the problems will be. “Allergens and irritants in the air, extreme weather events, ultraviolet solar radiation, and vector-borne, waterborne and infectious diseases might all increase in the coming decades, and they have the potential to impact on our health and the health of our loved ones,” she says. “The spread of infectious disease, particularly in our water sources, is of concern and needs greater attention.” The Ministry of Health will be working with DHBs, many of which are already doing a lot of work on this, to become more sustainable and reduce their carbon footprints. The Ministry has asked ESR to provide scientific advice on how the health sector can adapt to climate change. “I am really encouraged to see greater work happening on preparing for how climate change will affect us. Later this year the Heat Health Plan Guide will be published. Climate change is one of the

Integrity Community Media’s Dargaville based team

These publications — Lifestyle editions for Northland, Waikato, Taranaki, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay and Wairarapa — equate to one of our newspapers being delivered to a home two and a half million times a year — each one locally owned, staffed and operated. That’s a big responsibility, but one, which our team of journalists, designers, writers, salespeople and administrators are proud to accept. Now we’re changing our name to reflect our core principles — as of May 8 we are Integrity Community Media. General manager, Deb Wright, says that

she’s proud of the Integrity ‘family’ — looking back with accomplishment on how far the business has come and investing in big plans for the future. “Changing our name to Integrity shows we’re different,” she says. “Our customers and readers are key — without their trust, we don’t exist. That’s why I’m pleased to work with a team who truly believe in the value of what they’re achieving each edition.” The ownership and staff of the company will all remain the same — and remain 100 per cent Kiwi, in the face of multinational competition. We’re also holding true

to the old-fashioned principles of truth, accuracy and relevance in the press. In a world where internet pundits and self-proclaimed experts vie for their preferred political spin, and the outright trivial has become ‘news’, Integrity Community Media will always stand out as different. As a reader, as an advertiser, as an organisation, business or sports team, club or charity represented in our pages, you can count on that spirit being carried on — with Integrity. Thank you for your custom and support in the past — we look forward confidently to our future in business together.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Vacuum sealers

C & M Marketing Ltd is a family-operated business based in the Far North, specialising in domestic and commercial vacuum sealers since 2008. Craig and Michelle Jenkins are the sole distributors of the ZeroPak and SICO Vacuum Sealers in the South Pacific, which are manufactured for them in Europe by companies who have been making vacuum sealers and highend innovative household products for more than 20 years. The business stems from a love of hunting and fishing, and the desire to keep fish, shellfish and venison in top condition led Craig Jenkins on the hunt to create the best vacuum sealers. “Vacuum sealing was Craig’s idea, he wanted to keep the fish and shellfish we catch in the freezer without spoiling, and being a keen hunter he wanted to keep his venison in top condition too,” Michelle says. “His hunt began for a decent vacuum sealer that could deal with fish juice, liquids and the normal everyday food New Zealanders want to keep fresh longer. He couldn’t find anything suitable, so we did it ourselves and created the ZeroPak brand. “Being a perfectionist he is also in charge of any repairs and service, so if you have a technical vacuum sealing question, he is the man to talk to.

“Vacuum sealing keeps food fresher up to five times longer than normal storage, retaining nutrients, and saving you time, money and space in your fridge, freezer and cupboards. When you vacuum seal it prevents freezer burn, odours, mould and bacteria, not only will your food keep five times longer — but it will be tastier too. “It is not just food that benefits from vacuum sealing — use it to protect your tools from rusting, glue and paintbrushes going hard, electronics, documents, jewellery and photographs from damage, even to protect camping and fishing gear.” Sold in Europe under the brands Status and SICO, the vacuum sealers and accessories are guaranteed to be the highest quality and will give years of service and enjoyment. “We promote our products at expos and shows throughout Australasia, and we appreciate all feedback from our customers so we can improve our products and service.” ZeroPak products can be purchased directly online at zeropak.co.nz, from your local Hunting and Fishing store or from site TC32 at the Fieldays.

by Ann van Engelen

Zara Cosh was inspired to become a farmer by watching her father work on her grandmother’s property in Tomarata and other farms and now the 25-year-old now manages a 165 herd dairy farm.

“M

y grandmother had a couple hundred acres, but I lived in Auckland most of my life until I turned 18 years old, then lived with my dad in the country as university wasn’t my thing,” says Zara. “I helped on a dairy farm that he worked on near Taupo and have been farming in my own right for seven years now. I lease a block in Taupiri to graze beefies to make extra income. “Lifestyle blocks are good for a couple of beefies, but you can’t just leave them and forget about them. You have to keep up with the grass and make sure they are drenched, get supplement feed if necessary and ensure your troughs

and water lines are all in good order. You can have a couple of sheep to help with grass maintenance too. If you go on holiday you need someone looking after them.” Zara is managing the farm she works on alone and is a part of the local Young Farmers Club. “I pretty much do all the calf rearing, feed the cows and calves and maintain the farm. I run it like it is my own property — solo managers do more than someone with staff that can delegate jobs and I have done courses through Primary ITO. “They were pretty easy as they mix practical experience with going to class and you are with different people from

various farms — you learn from each other and it is good for socialising. “The farm is rolling, 66ha with 63ha effective — we have a bush block which is like a reserve and I milk the cows and my boss milks when I have time off. “I grow grass silage, turnips and sunflowers for extra feed — they say sunflowers are high in protein. It is my first year doing turnips and I feed them once a day and you don’t have to buy in extra supplement — you keep that for emergencies.” Zara is in the North Waikato Young Farmers Club and says it gets her off-farm. “We harvest the maize silage for other farmers as a fundraiser and hold events at the Taupiri Tavern once a month like mechanical bull riding night — sometimes we have guest speakers. “I first joined the club seven years ago, and used to help another club to run the district Young Farmers Competition and I thought I’d give it a try and have competed every year since and made regionals twice. It makes me proud to see a growing number of women taking on the blokes and we have great times together. “It’s on different farming industries and could be held on a sheep or beef farm. You may have to crutch sheep, work on motorbikes or put beehives together. We constructed a beehive box and made the screen the wax goes on and then stack the box. I learnt so much such, it has to be natural wood because it affects the bees — that is why you paint them, because they are

natural. Competing opens your eyes into other industries and it’s good to reiterate what farm skills you have and gain more knowledge. Zara says girls should compete and if she can do it anybody can. “It makes for good competition and shows women can successfully farm as well as men. It has been perceived as a man’s job for many years, but everybody has their strengths and weaknesses, and it is an industry anyone can work in. “I have the opportunity to go to Canada in June as my brother is over there, and I would like a break for two years and I want to take the opportunity to learn the Canadian way of cropping and farming. They crop a bit different

over there and use bigger machinery because their farms are so much larger. “My family are really supportive of my career and I have created my own system that works for me. I have adapted different techniques that make working solo easier. It is about making life simple and easy as your day goes by really quick, especially through calving when there are 101 things to do. Learning from my dad over the years has been an inspiration as well. “I would love to buy a farm one day, but cows aren’t cheap, plus you have maintenance so you need to plan very well to be successful.”

Growing veggies made easy Vegepod is one of New Zealand’s newest gardening systems allowing people to grow their own vegetables in small or large spaces. Vegepod has been in the country just 18 months, brought from Australia by Tauranga-based Lisa Lowe.

Vegepods are self-watering container gardens that are available in small, medium or large sizes. They are small enough for retirement homes, apartments or balconies and large enough for family gardens on larger properties and farms. Vegepods have their own irrigation system in the special mesh canopy and they also have reservoir tanks that collect rain water under the soil. “The water goes through the soil into the tanks and the roots go down and drink,” says company director Lisa Lowe.

“The self-watering means the garden can take care of itself and takes 80 per cent less water than a normal vegetable garden making them the perfect solution for people on tank supply.” The special mesh canopy that clips over the garden keeps out pests and animals such as white butterfly, possum and birds and the canopy helps eliminate weeds. “The cover also keeps the plants warm creating a greenhouse effect so you can grow all year round. Even lettuces can be grown in the middle of winter,” says Lisa.

“People also love the stands and wheels that can be purchased as these raise the Vegepod to waist height so bending over is eliminated. Adding the wheels makes it easy to move the garden position which is handy if you only have a small patio or deck.” Being a modular system the pods can be attached together to build the size you require. They come in a kitset form with a warranty and are easy to assemble with no tools required. “The base is made from a certified food safe plastic and is completely organic. All you need

to add is a good quality soil with a healthy amount of compost and you have the perfect environment for accelerated plant growth. We are proud to be part of a great quality product and our customers have been really excited as it has put gardening enjoyment back into so many people’s lives,” says Lisa. Come and see Vegepod at the Fieldays® site RL22 For more information visit www.vegepod.co.nz or phone Lisa on 021 442 273

Irrigation looks to the future A national conference looking at the future of irrigation has sparked debate on the future direction of the sector and changes on the horizon. Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan, Nuffield scholar Ryan O’Sullivan, ANZ Rural Economist Con Williams, Pamu Farms Environment head Dr Alison Dewes, CEO of Pioneer Energy Ltd Fraser Jonker, and Professor Jacinta Ruru discussed a range of topics. “Irrigation underpins not only agriculture but also numerous tourism activities, as well as local businesses in town,” said IrrigationNZ chair, Nicky Hyslop “We now understand the impact on the environment irrigation and land use has had. Irrigators and schemes up and down the country are working with communities to improve water quality.” Following the government’s recent announcement that a number of irrigation projects won’t be able to access loan funding, Con Williams said that long-term certainty around water policy was important for farmers to make future investment decisions. Dr Dewes supported the government’s decision, saying New Zealand needs a new strategy as mass land changes had occurred in the past 20 years, which required significant amounts of water. “This has spillover effects, and we need to pull back and think about this.” Ryan O’Sullivan said that both nutrient discharge and water allocation issues needed to be dealt with at a catchment level as there was so much variety catchment to catchment in the issues being dealt with.

Mayor Tim Cadogan agreed, referencing a local river. “Manuherikia must be solved by people in our district not out of Wellington. One size won’t fit all, but that’s what will come out of Wellington.” A water tax was also discussed, with Professor Ruru saying that once a value was placed on water, water is property and the government would have to address what Maori rights and interests in water were. “A water tax would be expensive to collect, however, a tradeable system may work, but a better approach would be tax the externality,” Con Williams said. Dr Stuart Styles from the Irrigation Training and Research Centre at Cal Poly State University, toured New Zealand looking at how our irrigation systems compare to those in California. He saw that there was opportunity for New Zealand to modernise more systems by replacing open races with piped systems. In California, growers had also experimented with their fertiliser management to obtain improved crop yields, which New Zealand could learn from. Spray irrigation are the predominant type of system in New Zealand, whereas in California surface irrigation is used on 43 per cent of irrigated land, which is a less water efficient system. He concluded that irrigation systems and practices in New Zealand were at the upper end of the performance spectrum.

THE AMAZING by Ann van Engelen

Gary Bignell left school more than 30 years ago at 16 years old and completed his diploma in horticulture, specialising in stonefruit and working in a cherry orchard.

S

ince then, Gary and his wife Steph have spent the majority of their lives dedicated to producing and selling the freshest cherries direct to customers all over New Zealand. Recently they launched their own brand of cherry juice, which they created to share the health benefits of their muchloved fruit. “Dad grew up here in Blenheim and was always involved in cherries as that is where he first started work and he learnt on the job. We planted our own orchard here 10 years ago because it is a good growing region,” said their son and general manager, Cameron. “Cherries grow really well in Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough or Central Otago due to the very cold winters and hot, dry summers — but there are a few orchards in other places.

“We love working with the fruit because it is such a seasonal product, they are a flavoursome healthy treat that are only around for eight weeks of the year, and people enjoy giving and receiving them, especially as a Christmas gift.” The family grow approximately nine varieties of sweet cherries. “They all ripen at different times during the season. We get the best just before Christmas, and the late ones stretch our harvesting season out. They all have slightly different tastes, colours, sizes and shapes and it is very difficult to tell the difference.” The family have planted nearly 20,000 trees on their 70 acre property. “It is a sizeable orchard and takes a lot of work to maintain. We follow strict pest control programmes that are used

only when necessary to deter bugs,” says Cameron. “For years we noticed the health benefits of cherries at the start of each season because our sleeping patterns would significantly improve — but we would then slip back into restless nights when the season finished. “We could only make use of the fruit for those eight weeks of the year, and we wanted to work out a way to get people their cherry fix all year-round, so we started research to create the cherry juice.” It took the family three years to develop their product. Cameron’s siblings, Renee and Jacob, are also involved in the business, and they receive emails daily from customers saying they sleep better or get relief

from gout and arthritis. It is used in cooking, pouring over ice cream, in salad dressings and as a health tonic. “It could have been perfected quicker if we added chemical agents and preservatives but we took the time to produce a 100 per cent natural product. We had great support from other New Zealand business owners who were pretty open with their advice. “Research shows that sweet cherries grown in New Zealand are a natural source of melatonin — more than 30 times higher than other varieties. This hormone is necessary for not just sending you to sleep, but also helping you stay asleep. “The fruit also contains extremely high levels of anthocyanins, which have powerful antioxidant and anti-

inflammatory properties. Michigan State University research found ‘the anthocyanins that make cherries red could also help relieve pain more effectively than aspirin’ and they may reduce osteoarthritis by working directly on inflammation, through the positive effects of anthocyanins.” A study by the Boston University Medical Centre found that ‘cherry intake was associated with a 50 per cent lower risk of gout flares over a 48-hour period’ due to lowering uric acid levels. “Every weekend our family sell juice at different markets all over New Zealand and let people taste the product. Many of our customers, including farmers, have seen beneficial results with as little as 50ml of juice per night. For severe conditions, we recommend increasing

the daily intake to 100ml and you can also just drink it every day. “We have 10 months between cherry seasons, and are constantly learning about other potential products. There are not many cherry by-products available and we source fruit from other growers. The more we can produce the better it is for all growers as we are helping each other. “Our parents’ passion has been amazing and to get the juice stable and as good as it is was a huge investment. It took a lot of foresight and vision, and they had the will to continue despite failed attempts, even when others said it wouldn’t work and they are wasting their time. “They deserve the success they are getting.”

The Helisika way Helisika Helicopters operates a highly cost-effective aviation service, utilising the skills of competent, experienced personnel who are committed to providing professional, reliable and prompt service.

“My dad Greg and the team hold all the necessary licences and certificates required to fulfil their operations in a safe, professional manner,” says operations manager, Jaz Gribble. Greg has been involved in the aviation business for some 20 years with many thousands of hours flying, and concentrates on providing agricultural services such as spraying, fertilising, lifting and much more. “We are commercial operators and provide a cost-effective alternative for agricultural farmers. We have a high standard of equipment for a wide range of operations, and our pilots have more than 20,000hrs helicopter flying experience. “The team are skilled in lifting in confined spaces, moving farming equipment and

construction materials for commercial or domestic. The entire fleet is equipped with specialised GPS technology for accurate results. All machinery, vehicles, trailers and auxiliary equipment are regularly maintained, fully licensed and registered. “We have many years experience in lifting timber, concrete and metal into remote places that are inaccessible by other means. Helisika use collapsible monsoon buckets convenient for firefighting, which are filled from the ocean, lakes, farm dams or medium-sized rivers.” Helisika Helicopters have been spreading fertiliser for nearly 30 years and have developed the most cost-effective and efficient systems. “We apply urea, DAP, superphosphate,

lime, RPR and various pasture blends. These products get applied on forestry, maize, crops and general pasture,” says Jaz. “There are many reasons to use a helicopter to spread your fertiliser including accuracy of application, no fertiliser in the waterways or over the bush, no worries about your airstrip being OSH safe or too wet for fixed wing. “Helisika Helicopters’ entire fleet is equipped with specialised GPS global positioning system equipment, and we have the ability to use computerised chart systems to download chart files to show boundaries.” Call us for a discussion or more information on 0508 435 424.

Keeping gutters clear Winter preparations wouldn’t be complete without making sure your building gutters are up to speed. If gutter guards and spoutings are needed, Gutter Solutionz products are guaranteed to perform effectively for a minimum of 10 years when installed by authorised gutter guard installers. The company was established in Christchurch in 2005 as a preferred gutter protection service and has been looking after New Zealand properties ever since. By protecting gutters from debris and blockages, there is less need to put yourself or others in dangerous situations trying to clear them. The Gutter Solutionz superior metal spouting screen will enhance your roof, and it means things such as leaves, debris, snow, hail, rodents and birds cannot get in — yet it lets water through as usual. Your local specialist will assess your specific needs and design a solution that works for your individual situation to help stop your gutters from blocking, which could lead to other issues such as internal ceiling or wall damage. Each distributor is specifically trained and in turn licensed to carry out assessments and installation. One size does not fit all and Gutter Solutionz understand there are multiple options in materials for gutters. They provide guards from 190mm wide to special widths of up to one metre wide. SHOWCASING TO

THE WORLD BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

This is part two of Cheryl Eldridge’s story of being passionate about a rare breed of grey sheep and New Zealand wool. With her husband Barry, she has diversified the farming activities on their property Stansborough Station and developed the breed, which is now called ‘Stansborough Grey’.

C

heryl and her two sons personally sort and class every fleece into three shades of grey as the sheep are shorn. This is done twice annually to keep the quality at its best for textile production. Cheryl has a background in the creative arts, along with daughter Kiri, and designs all the fabrics, accessories and finished product range. “The wool comes in dark, mid and silver grey, and within these preselected tones there is a whole spectrum, which

creates the marvelous, almost metallic sheen,” says Cheryl. “I started working alone, in a shed with one loom, and now have six historic looms and a wide blanket loom, and we are training a couple of apprentices to pass on the knowledge we have. “The yarn is better spun as fine worsted, and then it is combed to enhance the lustre. The demand for the fibre is such, that we cannot supply generally because all our yarn is used in-house.”

The fibre can be woven, knitted and felted, and all processes are used to produce the unique Stansborough designs. The yarn is taken to the Stansborough Mill in Wellington for weaving. The looms at the mill weave their own strands of history, dating from the early 1890s. “They are amongst the first mechanical looms ever designed and add, rather than detract, from the general impression of intense individual involvement in production. Depending on the complication of each different weave, it can take two days to hand thread and set up each loom before weaving,” says Cheryl. “This intensity of involvement is in all parts of the process between farm and final products that are totally distinctive. Our inspiration for designs come from the environment in which the animals are farmed, tree barks, leaf forms and stunning vistas. Our team have spent years developing the many complicated undulating twill derived and other weaves, and our resulting fabric has a unique handmade and natural feel, quite different to other mass-produced commercial products.” The fabric has beautiful draping qualities, enhanced by the careful — sometimes created by hand — finishing to emphasise the lustre, drape and handling. “We have travelled the world and opened the markets up and we do a lot of high-end quality designs for international clients, but 50 per cent of our business is still national.”

Throws, ties, scarves, wraps and cloaks have been fashioned from the gleaming Stansborough fabric. “We have worked a lot with the movie industry: including producing garments and items for the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, Spartacus, Pete’s Dragon, The Water Horse and Kidnapped. It has been an honour to present New Zealand creations to the world. I believe wool has been underrated as a natural product — we could be using the lower grade wool across the country to make healthy and sustainable insulation for every home and slippers for children in schools and the elderly. “The value of it being breathable and environmentally friendly, safe, fire resistant and healthy is important to many people. We are looking after the planet long-term by using natural fibres — people want things that will last in their homes for years to come and have something to snuggle up and you get natural comfort from wool — unlike man made fibres. You can use so many different types of wool — it just needs good imagination — our grey wool can be mixed with other fibres, including Alpaca and bamboo, and we want to use hemp in the future. “Wool absorbs energy and when used in carpet, you don’t get the gases that carpet glues used in synthetic gives off. Cheryl has worked furnished super yachts, boutique lodges and designer homes in New Zealand and overseas. Their designer blanket range has been gifted to VIPs worldwide, and has

The team at Bennett Fertilisers have been supplying dairy and dry stock blocks, orchards and lifestyle blocks around the country with chicken manure for more than 20 years. Our team talk passionately about a product we believe packs a special punch. It is a natural product with proven performance; our chicken manure is cost-effective and environmentally sound. Farmers and growers alike recognise the importance of their environmental responsibility in tending to their crops. Chicken litter is a valuable resource used to optimise pasture production. It is mostly organic matter and supplies nutrients, helps hold moisture, improves soil structure and encourages organisms such as earthworms. Chicken litter is used to fertilise all types of pasture and forage crops where high levels of production are required like lucerne, maize, kiwifruit and avocados to name a few. Our organic certified chicken manure is Biogro certified. Biogro is New Zealand’s largest and best-known certifiers for organic products. Bennetts also supply a 50:50 compost, which is a blend of green waste compost and Bennett Fertilisers chicken manure. One load of compost is mixed with one load of chicken manure ensuring an even mix of products. It is then loaded into a storage shed where

Simple solution to liquid storage As New Zealand’s distributor of flexible tanks, Flexi Tanks NZ Ltd offer a simple solution to liquid storage. Manufactured in France by LabaronneCitaf since 1959, the Flexi Tank gained approval by the French Agriculture Ministry. The product has also been textile approved and monitored by Kiwa (product specification review) for the past 20 years. “Its enclosed strong bladder has a tensile strength of 450kg per five centimetres and contains tanks capable of storing 100 to 1 million litres of effluent or 25,000 — 2,000,000 litres of water. Flexi Tanks provide solutions for the storage of many types of liquid with multiple uses around the world,” says company director, Anton Meier. “It is simply installed through rolling out the bladder on top of a 100mm horizontal bed of sand; the Flexi Tank is then attached to the current effluent or water system. This eliminates expensive engineering consent work and provides an ideal solution to dairy effluent and water storage needs. Flexi Tanks are especially suited to high-risk soil areas.” Weighing in at two tonnes Flexi Tanks’ first one million litre effluent tank in the country was installed in January. The tank, near Cambridge, took a team of 14 just one hour to complete the work. Anton and his partner Jacky van der Poel

There is no need for resource consent or WorkSafe compliance signs,” said Anton. “Doing away with the pond consent alone could save the farmer $30,000 in fees. You can depreciate your Flexi Tank at 26 per cent per annum as they are a tangible asset, which can be rolled up and sold if need be.”

Natural animal health

ON THE FARM

Tineke Verkade’s passion for natural health and well-being with people and animals has led her to create a unique business using homeopathy and herbs in all aspects of farming industries. Homeopathic Farm Support (HFS) began in 1997 in response to repeated requests from farmers for quality homeopathic products and professional information, education, guidelines and support in the safe and effective use of homeopathy. Tineke is now well recognised in the New Zealand livestock and dairy farming communities. In November 2009, HFS won the Organics Aotearoa New Zealand (OANZ) Enterprise Award. Tineke was the supreme winner of the Enterprising Rural Women Award 2010. Many conventional farmers also now use homeopathy for animal health in their farming operation (exclusively or along with conventional medications), due to the success they have experienced using homeopathy to improve and maintain the health of their animals and the productivity of their farm. HFS Ltd provides for Dairy and Dry stock farmers: • Telephone Help desk • Provides Homeopathic products

• Information Pack • Quarterly Newsletters • Laminated Calendar and Reference Sheets • Books — The Homeopathic Handbook for Dairy Farmers, Homeopathy for Horses and Homeopathy at Home written by Tineke Verkade • Herbal AB (a herbal tonic and immune support product) • Natural Teat Conditioner (BioGro & MPI / ACVM) certified • Herbal Digestive Drench (BioGro & MPI / ACVM) certified • Annual representation at national and regional field days • One day seminars provided (New Zealand wide) • Present at the certified organic discussion groups (New Zealand wide) HFS Ltd has always placed a high value on free information and training to empower farmers to better care for their animals in a cost effective, efficient (and most importantly) natural way.

Customs Minister, Meka Whaitiri, visited the Synlait head office in Dunsandel, near Christchurch where she presented the certificate of partnership signed by Customs and Synlait. “New Zealand’s SES scheme gives members greater certainty at international borders and ensures minimal delay, and this partnership is an endorsement of the exporter’s standards of security on its chain of supply,” she said. “Synlait is one of the country’s most successful dairy businesses with a range of value-added products, including infant formula and milk powders. I am pleased they have joined this partnership, and I am confident they will find real benefits in the scheme.”

Advising on dairy Hadleigh Putt recently joined Fonterra as a sustainable dairy adviser becoming part of the largest team of sustainable advisers in the country that give nutrient management advice for setting farm environment plans. SDA’s work one-on-one with farmers to assist with a broad range of sustainability-related farm matters to meet the co-operative’s and the dairy industry’s guidelines and requirements. “I am a few months into my SDA role at Fonterra, having been immersed in the Waikato all my life,” says Hadleigh. “After growing up on a dairy farm in Putaruru, I have spent my career both as a nutrient specialist in South Waikato and a training adviser supporting farm trainees through training courses. “There are 400 farms in my catchment that I am gradually making my way around. I really enjoy teaching and sharing the knowledge I have about soil and pasture with farmers, particularly around good fertiliser management. Being an SDA is a perfect blend of the two.” Hadleigh says he has been working with farmers on their farm environment plans to ensure they are home and hosed before the 2025 council deadline. “Once I have made initial contact, I typically spend a few hours with the farmer at the kitchen table and then look at all aspects of the farm. I take photos, document good management

practice and highlight potential risks and opportunity for improvement, before heading back to the office to put the full plan together. “It is still early days, but some of the key trends I have seen so far are around effluent management — particularly around reinforcement. The majority of our farmers have a lot of good infrastructure in place, so they are being complimented on that while looking ahead at what works best with the varied flux in the weather we have had recently.” He says there is a lot of pride around waterways on-farm, particularly when remembering how it used to be. “Part of my role on-farm, and through Fonterra’s commitment to the Sustainable Dairying Water Accord, is to verify that waterways are fenced to keep stock out — and there has been a huge amount of work go into that down here. Farmers are also planting native species as part of their riparian programmes, and they are extremely proud of that. “Over the next few months, I am focussed on meeting as many farmers as I can. It is going well so far, and I am enjoying the mix of being both

Next generation fertiliser on show Fertwise ecological and nutritional principles are the fundamental basis of Fertwise products. “Our range of fertilisers are essentially, compounded elements of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium plus vital trace elements,” says Mr Kayol Robinson, an entrant at this year’s Innovation awards at the Mystery Creek Fieldays. The basis of the new fertiliser range is to help farmers produce affordable, nutritious dry matter in an easy and environmentally kind way. Liquid fertilisers feed plants through their leaf and root systems allowing them to absorb nutrients quickly, encouraging rapid growth and addressing nutrient deficiencies, contributing to improved pasture quality and nutrition of animal feed. Mr Robinson’s history of formulating and manufacturing organic

agronomic insecticides, fungicides and bio-stimulants has been instrumental in the development of the new conventional range of Fertwise liquid fertilisers. “Our innovative products are manufactured in rural Waikato; they are formulated to suit New Zealand farming conditions and our seasonal changes. We use pure ingredients, which is why there are no inert materials, fillers or heavy metal contaminants. Fertwise fertilisers are, however, compatible

with a number of chemicals, bio-stimulants and growth promoters, which is why it is so versatile,” he says. Liquid fertilisers are under-utilised in Robinson’s opinion. “I think it’s quite underestimated how effective liquid fertilisers can be. They have many benefits and lots of potential. Farmers find the advantage of Fertwise fertilisers on their hill country, easily flying on nutrients that their animals need. It is a costeffective way for farmers to add elements like cobalt, molybdenum or selenium that are deficient in their soil especially as they are in an NPK base. They are easily stored and applied when the weather suits. It has been used to boost the nutrient content of silage too. Farmers are industrious, and they are using their Fertwise Founder Kayol Robinson imagination to take full displaying a sample of his NPK liquid fertiliser advantage of Fertwise liquid fertilisers, they’ll be following the doing. There are practical ways to use cows next.” liquid fertilisers, and if it is something He says he is well aware that not all you can see working for you, then I farmers can see the benefits of using encourage you to come see us in the liquid fertilisers. “Not everyone will innovation tent during the 2018 Mystery agree with you no matter what you’re Creek Fieldays.”

Reduce winter nitrogen loss The coldest months of the year are just around the corner, so farmers should be particularly cautious when applying nitrogen fertilisers to pasture or crops. “Winter applications of nitrogen fertilisers are generally the least effective for promoting grass growth. That’s because slow growth of pasture in winter and greater drainage can result in nitrate leaching before plants can take it up,” says Waikato Regional Council sustainable agriculture adviser, Bala Tikkisetty. “The nitrogen may make its way to waterways where it can stimulate nuisance algal growth. Lactating cows excrete, in urine, about 70 per cent of the nitrogen they consume. Again, the risk of this nitrogen leaching from urine patches is much higher in winter.” Bala says some of the research to mitigate nitrogen losses has focussed on: growing pasture with more rooting depth for interception of nitrate, reducing the amount of time animals spend on pasture and feeding high-sugar grasses to reduce the amount of nitrogen lost in urine. “Nutrient budgeting using computer models such as Overseer, combined with feed budgeting, enables farmers to understand whether they are using too much or too little fertiliser. By doing this, farmers can optimise the use of nutrients and reduce the impact on the environment by working out a pragmatic nutrient management plan.

Understanding the term ‘response rate’ helps farmers when it comes to implementing these plans.” The response rate is the amount of pasture grown in terms of kilograms of dry matter (DM) per kilogram of nitrogen (N) applied. When 20kg N/ha is applied and an additional 200kg DM/ha of pasture is grown the response rate is 10kg DM/kg N applied. “The response is dependent on several factors such as soil temperature, plant growth, soil moisture, the deficiency of available nitrogen in the soil and the rate of nitrogen applied per application. “The best response to N fertiliser occurs on fast-growing pasture when other factors such as moisture and soil temperature are not limiting growth. Response rate variation also depends on the season and on nitrogen application rate. In winter, at the same application rate, responses are lower and slower than other times of the year. “It is better to apply nitrogenous fertiliser when the pasture cover is 1,500–1,800kg DM/ha. This ensures that there is sufficient leaf area for photosynthesis leading to good pasture growth. “Remember that the profitability of applying nitrogen is dependent on the

the concentration of N in the animal urine and allows plants to take up a greater proportion of the N, which in turn reduces leaching. “I am happy to say that a number of farmers, as well as industry organisations, are already doing a great job trying to increase productivity and reduce environmental impacts through more careful use of nutrients.”

Starting NZ-EU FTA negotiations Beef + Lamb New Zealand and the Meat Industry Association welcome the agreement to start the New Zealand-European Union Free Trade Agreement negotiations following the agreement from all European Union Member States on the negotiating mandate. “The agreement to start negotiations represents a significant milestone for the sector in the face of growing protectionist rhetoric worldwide,” says B+LNZ chief executive, Sam McIvor. “The FTA will create a stable and level playing field, which is crucial to the growth and future prosperity of the sheep and beef sector and New Zealand as a whole. “More than 600,000 New Zealand jobs directly depend on international trade, with the red meat sector alone employing over 80,000 people in New Zealand. All these jobs depend on our ability to export competitively and in a stable and predictable trading environment.” The European Union is an important market for New Zealand

Our forestry future

THE SHORT DROP LIMITED

The forest industry in New Zealand has been the invisible big player in the primary sector for decades. Though it will earn more than $6 billion in export receipts this year, most New Zealanders seem to think it’s just a low-value log trade and well behind both the red meat export industry and horticulture as providing value for New Zealand. Forest Owners communications manager, Don Carson, says all three segments of the primary industry; meat, horticulture and forestry, are worth about the same. Which is in front, fluctuates with market rates and harvest volumes from year to year. “Indeed we do ship logs in great volumes, but about half the value of our forest exports are from further processed timber products. “Obviously sawn timber is most of that, but there’s a trade in sophisticated engineered wood panels and structures as well. “A huge amount of our harvest is also used for housing and commercial building. Increasingly, wood provides a commercially and environmentally viable alternative to constructing in concrete and steel.” The new government’s Billion Trees in Ten Years planting commitment will add up to another half million hectares to the existing plantation forest estate of nearly two million hectares. That may be just the beginning. The Productivity Commission has just suggested another astonishing 2.8 million hectares in trees to absorb enough atmospheric carbon for New Zealand to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Don says that while much of this would be in native species, or planted

on erodible country never to be harvested, the rapid efficiency of radiata pine carbon lockup, and the opportunity for a financial return to landowners comparable with livestock farming — means most of this new area would need to be in a harvestable rotation regime of existing commercial species. “It is a huge challenge, and we need a much larger labour force, which has the skills for the needs of modern forestry, but it will need to be flexible. For instance, the Productivity Commission hopes to triple the size of the horticulture industry in the same thir tyyear timescale. So seasonally it looks likely some people will transfer across both industries.” Forestr y is on a recruitment and skills The forest industry is looking to recruit training drive, visit the people that would like to make forestry their career forest careers site at the Careers and Education Hub at the National Fieldays.

Of the entire new Holden Commodore range — a noteworthy first departure from the days of Australian design and production, but one with its own sense of style — there’s one vehicle, which stands out as still forcefully Kiwi.

Or, to be generous, a bit Aussie too. That car is the Holden Commodore Tourer, a four-wheel drive, V6 turbo powered station wagon which bucks all kinds of trends. Firstly, it’s a station wagon in a world gone mad for SUVs. Sports utilities from the tiny to the gargantuan roam the roads in packs these days — Nissan’s catalogue, for example, features two sports cars but a whole family of crossovers and full-fledged S-Us. We have been told for some time now that the station wagon is headed for the scrap heap of history, and that the big four-door sedan is following so close behind you’d think it was being towed. Not so, says Holden, boldly putting forward a brand new car in 2018, which manages to evoke those summer holidays in the back of the Berlina while being utterly light years ahead of those old wagons of yesteryear. The new Commodore may be just as German in its underpinnings as an Audi Avant or a big Merc, but it just feels right for our local roads. The price is right too when compared to other large ‘estates’ from Europe, all of which top $100k in local dollars. And while the option for

a roaring V8 behind the lion badge is gone, the able and willing turbocharged V6 you’ll find in Holden’s tourer more than gets the job done. Most of those ancestral dad-owned Holden, Ford and Chrysler station wagons were straight six affairs anyhow — and lacked the fuel economy, real-world power or nine-speed automatic gearbox of this modern iteration. That’s the other thing you’ll notice about the Tourer — badged with the evocative name of Calais on these shores. There are a whole lot of bells and whistles included, which those old station wagons we remember lacked.

Not just seats made of a kinder material than scorching hot summer vinyl — remember that? No, there’s also a heads-up display, ventilated seats, an invisible army of safety programs and features, and even a hands-free tailgate for loading and unloading all that camping gear. The Tourer, then, neatly answers the question ‘do I really want a new Commodore?’ by asking another one ‘Do you really need an SUV?’ If safety, space and a smooth ride are your thing — along with a certain sense of Kiwi family tradition — this is an understatedly cool ride.

Maximising battery performance “Every battery you buy and every battery you own is sulphated, and sulphation kills batteries,” says Gerard Anselmi from Recharge Battery Additive. “The days of buying a battery and adding the acid when you bought it are gone — so we are buying batteries that they made and had acid added six to 12 months ago at least, so they are all sulphated — because when they sit — they sulphate and die. Every field day we do — we have farmers with batteries well over 10 to 12 years old and still going — our record is 18-years, and we have had a heap of those now.” After almost 20 years selling Recharge in New Zealand and 15 years in Australia, the ex-Te Kuiti farmer says it is a simple formula. “Don’t wait until they die — the earlier you treat them, the less damage is done, and the longer batteries will go.” According to Gerard, a Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons, re-aciding the battery. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation process, one chemical reaction to counter another, maximising battery charge holding capacity and preventing premature battery failure,” he says. “Treat them early, repeat this every two years and keep them charged — it is so simple. Remember — don’t wait till they die and try and resurrect the dead because after the plates have been damaged, it is too late.”

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT Tyre Checks & Repairs New and Used Tyres The 500ml farmer pack is most popular and treats 10 x N-70 tractor batteries or is enough for most motorhome users. A more cost-effective 2-litre commercial pack is also available and can be purchased online at recharge.net.nz. “The 2-litre treats 42 x N-70s or about 20 bigger truck batteries, so it costs about $7 to treat an N-70 and as much as doubles its life expectancy, keeping it running at full capacity by dissolving the lead sulphate build-up back into sulphuric acid holding electrons. Stopping rust nature’s way It is more than wool which keeps sheep dry. Prolan NZ has enhanced the use of lanolin in sheep’s wool to manufacture environmentally friendly industrial lanolin lubricants, corrosion inhibitors and anti-seize greases, which stop rust. Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage. In the New Zealand agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quad bike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware. Once Prolan ‘Enduro Medium Grade’ is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides long-term protection. Bikes can be water blasted after use, and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. Therefore, it is not hard to double the bikes life and increase its resale value. There is also an increasing number of agricultural fertiliser companies realising the benefits of a coating of ‘Prolan Enduro Heavy Grade’ to protect truck and fertiliser loaders chassis operating in harsh environments. Prolan is coated internally and underneath to

provide protection. The significant cost savings to fleet owners are they are reporting far fewer WOF and COF failures from rust since using Prolan products, less downtime on maintenance, fewer part replacements and increased resale values. Prolan will protect your assets — increase their resale value and help save time on maintenance. At the same time, Prolan ticks all the boxes for being an environmentally friendly lubricant which has international food grade approvals. Prolan can be now found in many workshops in Scandinavia and the UK. Call into your local Farmlands, Anzor Fasteners or Ullrich Aluminium branch and collect a can of ‘Sheep ‘n’ a Can’ because it really works — ‘made from nature to protect nature’. We welcome your visit to our site at the National Fieldays Site F11. Cut

out the attached advert and receive a free Prolan Sheep ‘n’ a Can with any purchase at the Fieldays. Contact us Phone 0800 PROLAN or website prolan. co.nz.
