Of course, we look beyond the farm gate elsewhere in this issue. There’s a look at the north Waikato farm ‘Hinemoa’ — home to the Nicholson family since 1945. From a traditional grazing property, it has become a major cropping operation. Diversification, as is often the case, has brought more rural success as the property produces onions, potatoes barley and pumpkins. We sneak into town this month to check out an historic building after a $10m face lift that provides a boost to the tourism industry. Known as Quest Hamilton, its roots lie in the farming industry after it served from 1919 for the merged NZ Dairy Association and the Waikato Co-operative Dairy Co Ltd.

A grand design for field days
“We have come a long way from the first Mystery Creek event and we could do with some more space” Retired dairy farmer, and National field days’ chairman, Warwick Roberts, has probably never been so busy as the Mystery Creek event looms, and at the same time has the organisers looking to the future. “It’s all on, and just clearing my emails takes a lot of my time,” said Warwick. He remembers working as a volunteer on fencing off the original field days’ site as a young farmer at Te Rapa 41 years ago. “I dropped out of involvement after seven years and devoted time to the dairy industry, first through Federated Farmers and then as a dairy company director. After retiring from farming I renewed my involvement in the field days’ society and have developed my understanding of the complex event.” A lot of his focus is on the future and to this end, expressions of interest in the region’s first event-scape design contest, the Master Plan Design Challenge, closed last week, and results will be announced on May 25. This is the opportunity to reshape Mystery Creek Events Centre’s 88-hectare property and it attracted 11 specialist firms based within New Zealand and overseas. The event organisers and land owners, National Fieldays Society, are pleased with the level of entries considering the tight two-week application period. Assets and Facilities committee chair, Tony Begbie, says a scrupulous judging process, selected three finalists who have been invited to continue the
competition. Each finalist company is awarded $5,000 for this achievement. “The judging panel were extremely impressed by the calibre of applicants, presentation standards and the range of master planning experience; local, national and international,” he added. “The selection process focussed not only on capability, but also understanding of the project, and what different perspective the applicants could bring to Mystery Creek Events Centre.” The finalists are: GHD, a design and architectural consortium led by Melissa Clark, ‘whose technical specialities include urban design, transport planning and landscape architecture both nationally and internationally’. MOAA architects are based in Hamilton. They combine individual abilities and spearheading the team is Tim Horne ‘who has extensive experience across a range of project scales and has developed a reputation for an inquisitive and innovative approach to design’. The third finalist is Beca Group, one of Asia Pacific’s largest privately owned consultancies dealing with planning, architecture, urban design and landscape architecture, engineering and project management. Project director for Beca is Richard Douch ‘who has led the planning components of a number of growth management and/or tourism related projects within the Waikato’. Finalists have already submitted their site design and rationale for the expansive Mystery Creek campus. Winners will be announced at a function on Friday May 25 and the first phase of the project is expected to begin later this year.

Pukekawa family reap rewards from commercial cropping by Annette Lambly-Robinson
Good working family partnerships are one of the reasons for the success of Hinemoa Quality Produce — that along with clever business management, passion, dedication and hard work Three generations have worked the north Waikato farm ‘Hinemoa’ since it was first purchased by Charles and Jesse Nicholson in 1945 — each generation adding to the success of the previous. In the early days it was farmed as a sheep and beef unit, but nowadays the successive Nicholson’s — John and now his son Chris, along with their respective wives, Claire and Vikki have created a thriving commercial growing business producing onions, potatoes barley and some pumpkin. The home farm — a 200 hectare property on Murray Rd in Pukekawa is
worked in conjunction with an adjacent leased 60ha. Hinemoa employs four full time staff including foreman and ‘number one’ man Jeff Billington and around 18 casual staff in the pack house. In the late 1970s, John, troubled by ongoing facial eczema ousted the flock and diversified into cropping and finishing beef steers. He still manages around 150 head, and works alongside Chris in the commercial growing operation established 20 years ago. Around 140ha is cropped — squash pumpkins and maize have been trialled and discarded — it’s onions and potatoes that are the main-stay crops. Grown for both the domestic and export markets — 70 percent of onions and 30 percent of potatoes are exported. Onions are direct drill sown in April. Harvesting begins with the early onions in November and carries on through to March. Potatoes are planted all year round — six different varieties are planted according to each variety’s growing season.

Any rejects are also ‘monitored’ and fed to the cattle to safe guard against accidental choking. A small amount of crown pumpkin is grown predominantly for the domestic market and barley is harvested for grain, then baled for straw. The stubble is ploughed back in as a restorative crop. Mustard is grown for weed control and also as a restorative and rotational crop. The rich volcanic soil is perfect for growing and the Nicholsons’ don’t take it for granted. The land faces north/west. The north provides sun for early planted potatoes, the westerly prevailing wind prevents frost. Soil testing, nutrient budgeting and regular expert consultation is undertaken. Shelter belts are used to advantage and silt traps used to minimise soil loss. Conventional fertiliser is applied, and mushroom compost and poultry manure

In a district where the average organic matter content of the soils is two percent, the Nicholson’s is six percent and rising “We were one of the first growers in the district to do this and while it took two to three years to see the improvement, it is really paying off. “The soil holds moisture and breaks down better and the yields get bigger and bigger each year. We have had a bumper crop of onions this year.” she said. The families have always had a passion to protect the land. Ten hectares of native bush is protected by a covenant and an additional 12ha covenanted about 12 years ago. They have also undertaken a wetland area as an ongoing project and continue to plant and manage this. “We can hear the tui and birdlife — it’s wonderful,” said Vikki. Five years ago they built an 80,000 cubic metre catchment dam to irrigate the farm, and this has proved itself as essential for sustainable cropping. Vikki says she is daily reminded of the benefits of raising a family in a rural environment and their children Julia (14) and Thomas (11) are reminders of the importance of environmental stewardship of the land. In March Hinemoa Quality Producers won the Waikato region’s Supreme Ballance Farm Environment Award. They will participate in the grand final for the national title on June 23 in Wellington.

Old ‘Anchor’ building gets new lease on life

T
he historic building, once a landmark feature of Hamilton city, and now spruced up with a $10m makeover, is poised to exert its presence as part of Hamilton’s burgeoning tourism industry. Built in 1919 following the merger of the NZ Dairy Association and the Waikato Co-operative Dairy Co Ltd, its importance to the economic and social history was significant. In 1928 — eight years after it opened its doors — a promotional brochure published at the time highlighted the company’s success, providing a fascinating picture of dairying in the region, including its history.
“The brochure described the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company as ‘one of the largest producing cooperatives in the world’, with a staggering turnover of £6,333,849 for that financial year alone,” says Gail Henry, the NZ Historic Places Trust’s lower northern area manager. At the time, the company had 10,000 shareholders and employed about 800 staff. Production figures for that year tell their own story — 26,072 tons of butter, 4250 tons of cheese and 4100 tons of powdered milk — and hinted at an even greater future.
“The NZ Dairy Company building was at the heart of an enterprise that incorporated 16 central butter factories, 17 cheese factories, two Glaxo factories, three milk powder factories, a condensed milk factory and a central casein factory,” says Ms Henry. In addition, the company had its own research laboratory, box and tin factories, timber yard, engineering workshop — and even its own coal mine. “The box factory in Frankton was itself an early marvel of mass production, in that year alone churning out a million containers from undressed timber,” she says.
The Anchor dairy brand butter produced commanded premium prices in London. Inspired by a tattoo he saw on an ex-sailor’s arm, Henry Reynolds — the father of Waikato dairying — devised the ‘Anchor’ trademark, which would become one of the world’s most universally recognised brands, and an agricultural icon — a glass door in the building still bears the symbol. It is uncertain when the building fell into disuse. Targeted by vandals in recent years, many of its windows had been boarded up. Although structurally sound, the condition of the building was

very poor when purchased by Safari in 2011. Work began in June the same year. The result is impressive, with the retention of all the building’s original façade. Its ‘Crittall’ windows and double cavity red brick walls were carefully restored, with NZHPT’s heritage professionals working alongside the developers. There was little internal integrity surviving, but where it was the developers have incorporated detail such as beautifullycurved stairwell bannisters that provide a subtle but graceful interior heritage sense. Quest Hamiltion is leased by franchise director, Lee Hare, who along with her family lives on site. All but seven of the 38 apartments had been sold at the time of opening, mostly to overseas investors. It is operated similar to a hotel with four-and-a-half star apartments available to rent from one night to one year. Varying from studio size to two bedrooms, and inter connecting apartments all are fully furnished and have full kitchen facilities. Many guests prefer to cook themselves but Quest offers various services including local restaurant chargeback, pantry shopping service, valet dry cleaning, and a baby-sitting booking service .“It’s virtually a home away from home,” said Ms Hare. Business is brisk — the majority of guests (although not restricted to) are business corporate or international clients.” “It is a lovely building which has retained all its charm, but is comfortable and very accessible to the heart of Hamilton,” she said.
Henry Reynolds the father of the dairying industry Besides having an eye for a brand, even more impressive, Henry Reynolds saw the potential in commercial butter production and export when dairying was more a sideline than a mainstay of farming. In the late 1870s, Henry Reynolds had begun the arduous task of draining Waikato swamp land and developing it into pasture. The result was some of the best dairying land in the world. In 1886 Reynolds built the Waikato’s first creamery at Pukekura near Cambridge.” By 1902 he had established his own slice of dairy paradise at the Woodlands estate near Cambridge, and had converted about 11,000 hectares of swamp into pasture running 40,000 sheep and 3000 head of cattle. Although Reynolds struggled initially, his eventual success was replicated by farmers around the Waikato, transforming the landscape and spawning a whole new industry. Dairying was big business — and big news, with local newspapers carrying lengthy accounts of shareholder meetings and negotiations taking place with key markets around the world to establish the best price for dairy commodities.

The two most common chronic muscle problems are Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR) and Fibromyalgia (FM). Both FM and PMR are autoimmune diseases and result in muscle pain but that is about where the similarities stop. PMR mostly affects those over 60 and common symptoms are stiffness and pain commonly around the neck and shoulders especially in the mornings. Around 20% of people with PMR also develop Temporal Arteritis. This is caused inflammation of the major arteries which pass through the temple causing vision problems and even blindness. The major medical therapy is the steroid prednisone which blocks the production of inflammatory cytokines usually with a rapid reduction in symptoms. Many recover in a year or so but others have this for an extended period or find that it recurs after a period of remission. People on statin medicines need to be aware that these can exacerbate PMR symptoms which is why I invariably add CoQ10 to those with PMR who take statins. Nutritional therapy complements the effects of prednisone by reducing immune system production of inflammatory chemicals. We add a wide range of antioxidant and antiinflammatory compounds to assist energy production and to lower inflammation. Serious fatigue is a feature of PMR and increases in energy is often the first benefit people feel from nutritional therapy. FM is a lot more complex. These are often referred to as FM syndromes as they involve other problems especially Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. There are relatively few medical treatment options but the most common are tri-cyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline taken in single evening doses to treat both pain and insomnia. FM is more difficult to treat with nutritional therapy as it is not a simple inflammatory problem. It appears that muscle mitochondria are damaged by free radicals which impair muscle fibre function which reduces energy and causes pain (M. Cordero et al, 2010). I have found people get real benefits from intensive multi-antioxidant therapy including CoQ10, OPC, resveratrol and many others. I always add broad spectrum vitamin and minerals and often high dose MSM before bed to help with muscle oxygenation. The affection for her donkeys is obvious in Beth McVerry’s voice whenever she is asked about her four-legged friends. Former dairy goat farmers the McVerry’s moved to a 12-acre lifestyle block on the outskirts of Cambridge about 11 years ago. Beth had grown up around horses, but had always had a special affection for donkeys. Her parents had kept one as company for stud charolais show cattle when she was young and as a child she had loved hitching him to a buggy and going for a ride. When the couple’s older of four children starting leaving home Beth felt she had a little more time on her hands to indulge in one or two passions of her own and the Mediterranean miniature donkeys had captured her heart. “Apart from the fact they are so very cute, they
are also a little different to other donkeys and being different appeals to me, said Beth. (She also keeps various breeds of Galloway cattle — but that is another story). First introduced to New Zealand in 1997 there are only 130 registered purebred Mediterranean donkeys nationwide. Since all these (and most registered stock in the world) originated from America they are commonly referred to AMMDs — American Mediterranean Miniature Donkeys. Miniature donkeys originated in the Mediterranean area of Northern Africa before migrating to the islands of Sicily and Sardinia off the west coast of Italy.

She aims to breed 10 good jennies and will find loving homes for the part miniatures as she builds up her herd of pure AMMD’s.
“They are also super intelligent and adore human contact,” says Beth.
“We have some very good dedicated breeders and good bloodlines in New Zealand so there is no trouble selling them — many are sold to Australia. People sometimes have to go on a waiting list for stock.”
They come in a wide range of colours including duns, chocolate browns and skewbalds. Like most donkeys they have a cross on their backs — a black dorsal stripe running from the wither along the spine to the rump and then down either side of the wither to their shoulders. Apart from son Ross’s much loved standard-sized donkey Sassy, Beth now has five AMMD jennies (female) , one AMMD jack and four other jennies including two part bred miniatures.

Apart from using her own jack, Beth also out-mates to others stud’ imported jacks — six foals are expected this September. Donkey husbandry is similar to that of a horse, with the exception their coats are not as waterproof so Beth‘s husband Paul has built some little donkey barns for them to shelter in their paddocks
during inclement weather. “My older girls are covered in winter.” says Beth. She has had no need to hard feed her herd, but does give the youngsters weaning supplement and all of them a mineral supplement by way of lick blocks. “They are perfect for our hilly country and just thrive.” Once beast of burden, today they are kept mainly as pets, as riding animals for children or for carriage, and buggy driving. “People associate donkeys with stubbornness, but in fact they are not — they freeze if frightened — as opposed to bolting like a horse — but once they feel confident or trusting they will move off nicely.”

the little cottage. She potted, planted and sold, supplementing the family income at a time when dairying was not as good as had been hoped. When her youngest child went to school Trish renovated the cottage putting in a small registered kitchen, a little shop and tiny tearooms. She baked her delicacies and even began running bread making classes as she had long perfected her herbals breads feeding her family. The classes still run over the winter months when the tea room closes. Business as they say flourished with family often pitching in to help. In 1995 the family made the decision to sell the farm and retaining only fives acres with their house and cottage they relocated a villa from Huntly to be used as larger commercial kitchen and tearooms. It became a popular stop for tourist buses. Nowadays the tearooms have been downsized and the cottage is one of three rooms offered as Bed and Breakfast accommodation.

People from all walks of farming, agriculture and rural life will converge on Mystery Creek near Hamilton in mid-June for the 44th New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays Covering 40 hectares at Mystery Creek Events Centre, Fieldays was booked virtually to capacity by early May with exhibitors keen to be front and centre at Australasia’s biggest agri-business show running for four days from June 13-16. More than 1000 exhibitors are expected to fill up the 1400 sites. Outdoor agricultural sites were already 99% booked by May and the sought-after indoor Mystery Creek Pavilion was also fully subscribed. Organisers were expecting to reach capacity well ahead of previous years. Exhibitors can be confident of getting their products and services out to a wide audience. More than 117,000 people attended the event last year. This year’s Premier Feature or central theme is ‘The Changing Face of Farming’, focussing on the various land ownership models and the change in farming approaches of New Zealanders. The theme incorporates the shift from traditional family owned farms and the resulting effects on the rural landscape. Situated at the centre of the Fieldays site, the Premier Feature exhibition will have its own dedicated seminar area. Other areas of interest during Fieldays include the Ag Art Wear and Innovation competitions. The Ag Art Wear wearable

The Invention section of the competition attracts rural innovations which are not commercially produced but demonstrate ingenious ideas, whereas the Equipment section allows professionals and businesses to showcase new or improved rural products. Innovations can already be on the market for up to six months before Fieldays, with businesses treating the competition as a platform to launch their product to the industry. A forum, held by experienced business leaders, will address the numerous start up challenges often faced by entrepreneurs. competitions, logging demonstrations, extreme air displays, machinery and stock handling exhibitions offer plenty of outdoor action for visitors. It’s not all business and machinery though. The popular Kiwi’s Best Marquee has been sold out for weeks with companies keen to showcase their food and beverage products. Celebrity chefs will be demonstrating ways to use exhibitors’ products in the Kiwi’s Best Kitchen Theatre, and visitors are unlikely to go hungry with 35 food vendors around the site. One of the most popular exhibits returning this year is the Lifestyle Marquee — more than 2,000 square metres of exhibition space featuring all kinds of products and services which complement the rural lifestyle. The NZ National Fieldays Society is a not-for-profit charitable organisation, run by a committee of volunteers and a team of more than 35 staff members working for weeks beforehand, with additional staff taken on during the event. This year’s strategic partners and major sponsors are ANZ and the University of Waikato. JUNE National Fieldays 2012 Wearable rural art on the runway

Using materials found or used on the land, designers will be creating works of art for models to exhibit down the runway during the National Agricultural Fieldays. Visitors to the Ag Art Wear show, which will be held twice daily at 11am and 2pm from June 13 — 16, will be amazed and inspired as everyday bits and pieces are transformed into ‘wearable art’.
From its initial launch in 1994, the Ag Art Wear has steadily grown. The original one category has expanded to four: Avant Garde, Avant Garde under 21, Designer Traditional, and Landcare Awareness. The Avant Garde category challenges designers to create a piece of art that can be either worn or mounted on the body, keeping away from the traditional clothing styles.

To encourage younger designers, an Avant Garde under 21 category has been developed to include individual creators and those at secondary and tertiary institutions. Judges will look for uniqueness, boldness, colour and the wow factor in these sections. Entrants in the Designer Traditional category are also encouraged to add an ‘Avant Garde’ factor to their creations but in keeping with this section’s criteria. A uniqueness of the design’s material, as well as originality incorporating an art factor while still resembling conventional garments, will catch the judges’ attention in this category. The Landcare Awareness category will challenge designers to use native flora and fauna in their body garment creations.

National Fieldays The competition, which has been held since 1973, features groundbreaking commercial improvements and backyard inventions, all with the aim of enhancing methods and improvements in farm efficiency. The Innovation Competition is split into two categories ‘Invention or Equipment’. Although entries in the Equipment category may have already appeared on the market for up to six months leading up to the Fieldays, businesses and professionals often find the Innovation Competition an ideal launching pad for their product. The Invention category of the competition showcases rural innovations displaying resourceful and original methods to improve and develop farming practices. Brought up on a lifestyle block just outside Waiuku, Stephen Snedden, spent many hours tinkering in his dad’s shed making go-carts and 60cc enduro bikes. All this tinkering seems to have taught him a thing or two.
Stephen completed his apprenticeship at the Glenbrook Steel Mill as a fitter and turner and was the winner of the National Apprentice Youth Skills Olympics for constructional steel in 1989. He then went on to represent New Zealand in Birmingham for constructional steel at the International Youth Skills Olympics the same year.

He also has other projects on the go and is part way through building an affordable, amphibian 4x4 ute. Stephen says, “this project is currently in the workshop so anyone who is interested is more than welcome to come and have a look.”
A well-known face at the National Fieldays, Stephen is exhibiting again this year with his engineering business WELDNZ located in Onehunga, Auckland.
Stephen is dedicated to helping others to learn. “I aim to provide my customers with the right tools and teach them how to use them.” One-on-one training onsite or in Stephen’s workshop is also available.
Stephen won the Inventors Award at the 1996 National Fieldays for product improvement to a multi-grip hand tool. He is passionate about inventing and is best known for developing the Seahull, a world-class moulded polyethylene catamaran boat, which will be displayed at the Fielday. “The Seahull boat is the first rotational plastic mould I have made and it was designed to suit rescue work in flooded areas and to be
Stephen likes to work with other inventors in developing ideas and getting products to the market. “If someone wants to develop an idea and is looking for a few pointers, I will work with them and be more than happy to sign a confidentiality agreement if required.” He has a broad knowledge and skill base and is able to help with everything from product development to engineering and marketing.

“We don’t want it to be scary or dreary and find that most people learn best and want to find out more in a fun, interesting and interactive environment. Our colossal colon will be the main focus of the site with attendees able to walk through the 6.5 metre inflatable bowel, seeing firsthand the damage caused by poor bowel health. “We hope our site will provide a great environment for people, in particular men, to become more aware of cancer and the importance of talking to your doctor if concerns arise,” says Graham. Farmer says milking system ‘good investment’ Bruce and Helen Donald have been dairy farming in the Waikato for thirty-three years and love the lifestyle On their 200ha farm near Tirau, the couple milk 550 cows through what may well be the oldest milk shed in the district, a 38-year-old rotary. Twelve months ago they were joined on the farm by share milker, Irishman Bill Moore and his South African wife Anke. An ongoing problem with mastitis, something all dairy farmers are familiar with, saw Bruce and Helen have the ADF (Automatic Dipping and Flushing) milking system installed on their farm last year. Developed in the UK, ADF Milking has been operating since 2004. The system, designed to disinfect the teat immediately after milking and sanitise the cluster between cows, had already proven itself popular with farmers

I run the outside Clic Dual Wheels at 5 PSI and the original rears at 20 PSI.” Mr Smith feels the Clic Dual Wheels have been a “fantastic” improvement to his mower.

Farmers demand control of Fonterra Parliament’s primary production select committee met last week to hear submissions on the proposed Dairy Industry Restructuring Act While the government describes the Dairy Industry Restructuring Amendment Bill as being enabling and Fonterra will make the final decision, many dairy farmers voiced major concerns overtrading amongst farmers and the Commerce Commission having oversight of the Fonterra price setting mechanism. Many see this as being the introduction of draconian intervention whereby the government could intervene in public interest initiatives to control Fonterra’s milk price. The future of New Zealand’s economy is closely tied to the performance of agriculture. Government intervention in the economy should be kept to a minimum. This includes any legislation pertaining to the structure and operation of the Fonterra Dairy Co-operative and the
company’s shareholders must retain the final say on any legislative changes.

While the detractors have argued Fonterra sets the domestic milk price in New Zealand, the reality is that supermarkets stock a range of milk products, not only processed by Fonterra but also other New Zealand proprietary milk processors. Other milk products such as cheese are manufactured by a number of independent processors and the prices for these products vary in range. If the government and the Commerce Commission were seen to be getting into the role of price setters this would be counter to free market policy. New Zealand dairy farmers today, understand and are fiercely loyal to the principles of cooperation as a means of working together to sell their products. It is clear from comments made by Prime Minister Jon Key that he would like to see external investors involved to maximise Fonterra’s profit. This rings alarm bells with a substantial number of farmers who are suspicious of the government’s intentions. Farmers of New Zealand pointed out to the primary production committee that in 2001, during the Select Committee process hearing, there was one submitter who is now a Fonterra board member who then openly advocated incorporation of the Fonterra company. In addition he voiced support for differential payments to farmers based on transport costs and the need to be flexible in payments where Fonterra faced competition for milk supply. The one thing about New Zealand dairy farmers is they have very long memories, and so they should have.

Sir Henry should exercise patience to allow for full discussion and disclosure of all information to enable Fonterra dairy farmer shareholders to confidently support change.

Fonterra is holding a special meeting of shareholders on 25 June to discuss the detail of the trading among farmers. Sir Henry van der Heyden, in a letter to shareholders said that while the majority of shareholders are urging the Fonterra board to get on with it, a small group of shareholders had concerns and were vocal in New Zealand media causing the issue to split the shareholder base and it was not in the best interests of the co-op’s future.
