The second stage of releasing North Island Robins on Mount Pirongia has recently been completed with a total of 60 birds now settled into their new surroundings. Pest control work undertaken by the Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society over several years laid the groundwork for the project. The pest-free area has been extended each year, and by 2012 had reached the society’s long term target of 1000ha. By 2010, with the pest reduction statistics we had and the area of control being well over the minimum needed for robins to live, DOC let us know that they would consider a proposal from us to reintroduce North Island Robins to Mount Pirongia,” said society chairperson, Clare St Pierre. “DOC’s best practice is for a relocation of species to be undertaken in stages, so it was planned that we do the translocation in two stages for a total of 60 birds, so 30 each year, half male and half female.” The source population of the North Island Robins released at Mount Pirongia have come from the Mangatutu Ecological Area in the northern Pureora Forest. Mrs St Pierre said monitoring of the

DairyNZ welcomes strategy for animal welfare DairyNZ is welcoming the New Zealand Animal Welfare Strategy released by the Minister of Primary Industries, Nathan Guy. Dair yNZ’s Strategy and Investment Leader for Sustainability, Dr Rick Pridmore, says New Zealand’s dairy farmers take animal welfare matters seriously and an overarching strategic framework for guiding how the country approaches the care of animals will be useful. “Animal welfare is one of the dairy industry’s 10 objectives in the newly refreshed Strategy for Sustainable Dairy Farming. We’re committed to farming to high standards of animal health, welfare and well-being. As the Minister points out, New Zealand has a world-leading reputation for animal welfare and we need to recognise and protect that as it is a vital part of continuing our success as an export industry,” he says. Dr Pridmore says DairyNZ is comfortable with much of
of animals as they are generally acknowledged and accepted. DairyNZ will work with the Ministry for Primary Industries to provide greater regulatory and legislative backing to these standards. A National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee, comprising veterinarians and various animal ethical
experts and scientists, has been set up to provide independent advice to the Minister for Primary Industries. “It’s vital that farmers are involved in the development of animal welfare standards to ensure they are practical and able to be readily implemented on the farm.”

Kiwi culture show to go

After years of developing Waikato tourist farm venture Woodlyn Park, Barry Woods aka Billy Black, has decided to place the property on the market.

arry, a former professional sheep shearer, travelled the world for many years in his career before establishing Woodlyn Park. He was also involved in setting a world record, shearing 8,500 sheep in one day with a team of 15 shearers. This record still stands today. On his return to New Zealand, Barry decided to turn his dream of developing a tourist farm park into a reality.
Woodlyn Park’s daily ‘Billy Black’s Culture Show’ features pioneer history, sheep shearing, bush animals and a dancing pig which is a huge hit with tourists. Barry’s imagination and hard work has also seen the creation of several unique accommodation options for guests.
Barry said the complex, near Waitomo Caves, started with a train motel in 1996, followed by a self-drive jet boat track around a lake.
A Bristol Freighter aeroplane was transported across country from Waihi to Woodlyn Park 13 years ago. Previously used as a restaurant at Waihi airport, Barry refurbished the plane to provide two self-contained motel units.
“A large barn was built with a bar/ restaurant for functions and a stage area for New Zealand’s first and only kiwi culture show.
Four years later Barry designed and built the world’s first hobbit-themed motels. He also restored a 1950s rail car to provide accommodation
“In fact, everything you see here is designed and built by Billy Black.”
In 2007 Barry decided he wanted an even bigger challenge and decided

to buy a World War II Fairmile patrol boat. After transporting the boat in one piece from the Port of Tauranga, Barry set to work transforming it into five motel units. “At 31 metres long and weighing over 80 tonne, this has been a huge project for one man,” said Barry.

has trained several pigs to perform in shows and on the big screen. A power-point presentation outlining Barry’s life has recently been produced for conferences. Barry said this presentation, named ‘Billy Black and his extra inch’, is an amazing, humorous story. The production begins with the challenges faced when setting a world record, and shearing sheep in diverse conditions ranging from 40°C heat in Western Australia to -20°C in the United States. The background progress of building and designing Woodlyn Park’s unique motels and creating an entertaining stage show follows.
“As the world’s leading travel guide, the Lonely Planet said ‘this is one helluva show’,” said Barry. Late last year Barry’s efforts creating Woodlyn Park were recognised with the 2012 Most Innovative Hotel Concept award at the Worldwide Hospitality Awards held in Paris. Barry has now decided to fulfill another dream and take his roadshow overseas. Woodlyn Park has been placed on the market to achieve this goal. “Here’s a great business opportunity to go on with, and make this complex even more world unique and world-widely recognised,” said Barry.

With New Zealand’s “pioneer history fast disappearing, he is passionate about keeping it alive for future generations
”
Taking his kiwi culture show a step further, Barry developed ‘Billy Black’s Educational Road Show’, performing at schools, conferences, shows, product launches and field days around the North Island. This one-hour roadshow looks at the growth of New Zealand with early pioneers clearing the bush to farm the land. Barry said with New Zealand’s pioneer history fast disappearing, he is passionate about keeping it alive for future generations. The show’s finale features Jonah — a rugby playing, Harley Davidson motorcycle-riding Kune Kune pig. Barry

For Cambridge beef farmers, Colin and Keryn Brown, animal welfare is their number one priority and the philosophy, ‘a happy cow is a tasty cow’, has won them Steak of Origin awards, a competition run by Beef and Lamb New Zealand.
A
s well as winning the Best of Breed at the 2009 awards, two cuts made it to this year’s semi-finals — the Piedmontese placed second in the Best of European Beef section and the Piedmontese crossed with Murray Grey steer took out third in the Best of Brand, retail category.
“With 400 odd entries, to have two in the last 20 is humbling, but affirmation that our product is right up there with the best in New Zealand.” The couple run a boutique operation with 100 cows located on the shoreline of Lake Karapiro and purchased it around 10 years ago. Colin used to own a manufacturing business, Company in Hamilton, and 25 years until the market

dry up forcing the couple to seek an alternative lifestyle. Both having an affinity with animals and Keryn a country girl at heart, they decided get into beef farming and haven’t looked back. “After The PC Company closed down I had no desire to go back into business and it was the correct decision for me. I love what I am doing and I wish I had done it 20 years ago.” Colin believes consumers are becoming more conscious of where their meat is from and welcomes visitors onto his 30ha farm to view his methods. “The nicest statement I’ve had was from a vegetarian. She said, ‘if I was to eat meat — I would want to eat it from your farm’.” He tries to make the environment

It’s the unexpected losses that are stressful for me.” For last year’s Origin of Steak awards he had ‘an absolute champion’ to enter in the Best Brand Wholesale category, a Murray Grey Piedmontese crossed called Rosie. “I just couldn’t send her off to be killed,” says Colin, “every day she would seek me out for a head rub, and it was so special. For what it’s worth, a customer in Inglewood said it was the best beef he had ever tasted.” Customers buy beef directly from their website, lakefarmbeef. co.nz, and purchase meat packs from 5kg up to 40kg. T h ey contain prime cuts to mince and sausages and are shipped in an aluminium lined cooler bag by courier, same day or overnight with the meat vacuum packed. Consumers can also purchase quarter, half, or a full beast and have packs sent out fortnightly or monthly in 10kg or 20kg lots to avoid having the freezer full of beef. district milk production average by Christmas. “I love farming,” Ian says. “Where else can you find an income based on an animal that not only produces milk, but replicates itself every year? What other job lets you play golf on a weekday?” Beginning when son Mitchell started playing, aged five, for 15 years Ian coached winning teams for the Hauraki North and Taupiri Rugby Clubs and school rugby for Hauraki Plains College. It was a busy life — farming, rugby and family.
“It was practice on Tuesday and Thursday between 3pm and 9pm, rugby all day Saturday until late, and Sundays reviewing the games. I invented a gate latch on a pager so I could call it up from the rugby club, and it would open the gate for the cows to walk up to the shed, ready for milking when I got home.” The invention won a national Field Days’ award but development costs made it prohibitive to market. “In 2001 there were few local sharemilking contracts available and we didn’t want to move away from our families, so we sold the herd and I got a job as a farm

tend not to seek out information and are slow to innovate, often due to loyalty to existing service providers, and he sees a need to incorporate motivational training into agricultural courses and for farmers to adopt healthier lifestyles.
Ian soon saw his approach as ego driven and ineffective. “I could give solutions but they needed to find their own. I realised it’s more about the person and how they see their future — are they dreaming of an offshore yacht? Whatever, it’s about them.”
“The people cupping the cows are the ones bringing in the dollars and nowhere near enough money is being put into farmer wellness. The whole industry needs a good shake up.”
The Handcocks returned to sharemilking, but in 2007 the cancellation of their contract followed by the withholding of their milk payments led to a lengthy arbitration process that, despite eventually finding in their favour, left the couple exhausted and out of pocket.
This year Ian took a break from rugby coaching. “I needed a recharge,” he says. Providing new spark was the setup of the inaugural Surf 2 Firth, a gruelling 42km bush marathon from Hikuai to Thames over the Coromandel Range — an event promoted, unsurprisingly, as ‘encompassing dedication, determination and an individual drive to accomplish something great’.
“
Ian says the experience has been put to good use. “My understanding of these situations from the inside out means I now know how to prevent them occurring. Now how I deal with farmers is the same as in rugby — you have to ‘grow’ the player, which needs an empathetic approach. Rugby coaching’s all about building leadership out on the field — there’s nothing like going to a final knowing you’ve ticked all the boxes.”
“They said it was too tough, but on March 16 a full field made it over and we’re planning the next one.” Information: 07 867 3251 or www.targetfocus.co.nz
For the first contact, he doesn’t look at budgets, production or feed. “I ask where they want to go. For ten out of ten people, that’s the hardest question, because they don’t know. And a lot of people want the best but aren’t prepared to do the hard work needed to achieve it — they’ll just see obstacles. But if things aren’t working you just have to find another way — once they make that turnaround it can be a very steep curve, with farmers often finding they can achieve a four year plan in two.” Ian says New Zealand farmers
Muscle pain is one of the most common complaints. This may be anything from statin myopathy to PMR or Fibromyalgia. Statin myopathy is of the most common forms of muscle pain. This is a collection of muscular and other symptoms caused by side effects of commonly prescribed cholesterol lowering statin medication. Statins drugs are very effective at reducing the amount of cholesterol in our blood. They do this by inhibiting an enzyme needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately this enzyme is also needed for the production of Co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Statins reduce both cholesterol and CoQ10. The main function of CoQ10 is to produce energy needed for our body demands especially for our muscles. Think of CoQ10 like the spark plugs and exhaust system in your car engine. Without a good spark a petrol engine will not run properly. With insufficient CoQ10 the trillions of little engines (mitochondria) in your muscle cells will not produce enough energy and you feel that as general fatigue and weakness, stiffness and pain in your muscles. Low CoQ10 levels can have a disastrous effect on muscles. Alarmingly, the highest levels of CoQ10 are found in heart muscle. If you think you have these symptoms you should talk to your doctor as sometimes a change in medication or doses can help. I recommend everyone on statins take 100mg of high grade CoQ10 to compensate and there are an increasing number of doctors who suggest CoQ10 supplementation to counter statin myopathy. The CoQ10 I prefer is a trademarked product that is proven to increase cell CoQ10 levels and includes vitamin E compounds known to help cholesterol balance. For those on statins my first goal is to prevent or reduce any statin myopathy but just as importantly to create a full cardiovascular nutrition programme. I invariably add a range of nutrients to help with circulation and to protect blood vessels especially coronary arteries from the free radical damage and inflammation central to the formation of artery-blocking plaques. There was a record attendance of 400 farmers, consultants, researchers, fertiliser and seed representatives, farm merchants, university students and representatives from Regional Councils. The research focus on ways to mitigate adverse effects of farming on the environment continues unabated, with reducing nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide emissions from dairy farms, especially urine patches, and reducing losses from N and P fertiliser being two major areas of study.
There is plenty of evidence that the nitrification inhibitor DCD, sold under the names eco-N (a spray) and DcN (a granule), reduces N losses from recent urine patches, but also increasing evidence that their benefits for overall pasture production are as little as 2%. However, a cost of around $100/ha

per application suggests that it is not going to become widely used without incentives or legislation. Other means of reducing N losses from urine patches include controlled grazing periods, with the cows being kept on pads or in cow homes in between grazing, so that the excreta can be collected and applied evenly over paddocks, as is done with dairy shed effluent. However, there are considerable costs, both capital and operational, to this solution. The essential problem is that although ryegrass-based pasture is a relatively economic and easily-managed feed, it contains excessive N in the form of protein relative to the cow’s ability to eat it to gain the energy. Most of the excess protein is excreted in the urine, in the form of urea, at rates of 500-1000 kg N/ha in the urine-affected patch. This is vastly more than the pasture can recover, and most of it ends up being leached as nitrate or lost to the atmosphere as gases, including the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide. So what are the solutions? I think a two-fold strategy is required. The first part is to find alternative pasture mixtures that can maintain the same milk solids production with a lower herbage N content. The second is to use the cow to treat its own urine, by having a small container of inhibitor attached to the cow, set so a little is released into the urine patch by the action of the cow
Farmers; use North SumpTM to improve your effluent retention The North SumpTM was developed for dairy farm use; enabling quick, simple diversion of clean water and dairy effluent in order to reduce loading on effluent storage. The premise is that the North SumpTM directs flows during high risk periods to effluent storage i.e. milking and wash-down and otherwise to storm water in low risk periods i.e. shed idle times. Features • Simple operation with positional lock (position flag optional) • Minimal potential for fouling by stick, stones and cow hair • Lightweight and easy to install • Relative low cost A joint venture between BPO Ltd and Northbay Holdings Ltd.

raising its tail to urinate. It may sound a little ‘left-field’ to some, but to me it is more rational than keeping cows on pads or in homes for most of the time. I have been trialing some ways of doing this for a few years now, and am becoming increasingly confident that a simple, cheap design will be found in the not too distant future. Watch this space! Coming back to the Conference, I presented with Dr Zaman from Ballance, a reassessment of RPR research in NZ, in particular looking at the length of the ‘lag-phase’, the period from the start of using RPR to when it is performing at least as well as superphosphate. Our reassessment found that this was no more than two years, except in the case of soils with high P retention (also rather misleadingly called ASC or anion ‘storage’ capacity). Where the soil P retention is over 80%, the lag-phase can be a few years longer. The easiest way to avoid any lag-phase is to use a mix of RPR and soluble P fertiliser, preferably DAP or TSP, for the first few years. Remember that about 7% elemental sulphur (S) will typically need to be incorporated. Amoung the many benefits of RPR, one of the most important is the greatly reduced loss of P in runoff into waterways. This fact is now becoming known by Regional Councils, and represents a simple and effective, no-cost option for farmers to reduce P losses in sensitive catchments.

An answer to cadmium Large quantities of super phosphate fertiliser, rich in cadmium, have long been applied to New Zealand pasture land and cadmium loading on these pastures are now becoming a concern. “Agrissentials is aware that plants grown on cadmium contaminated soils pose a health risk if consumed,” says the company’s CEO, John Morris. “Cadmium is further concentrated in live stock and enters the food chain, and these negative effects have been reported in studies through Hort Research.”

Mr Morris adds that all phosphate rock deposits are contaminated with the heavy metals uranium, mercury, lead, cadmium and fluorine. Most of New Zealand’s phosphate rock is supplied from Morocco and a laboratory analysis shows that this deposit contains uranium 82 ma/kg, mercury 566 ug/kg, lead 2mg/kg, cadmium 3mg/kg, and fluorine is a massive 3.5 per cent. The Hort Research project states: ‘There is a widespread interest in fluorine in relation to human and animal life because of its known toxicity and production of mottled teeth in man, ingested in too great a concentration with drinking water’. “It goes on to say — ‘it is well known that rock
phosphate from any source contains about 3.5 per cent of fluorine’. Although these figures look reasonably innocuous it is the continual build up of these heavy metals which create the problem.” Mr Morris says that within nature there is always an answer or a remedy to fix the problem. “The ultimate answer is to apply multi mineral, microbial rich fertilisers and get the micro-organisms, in particular, the bacteria to start working and detoxify the soil — get rid of these heavy metals. “Agrissentials have the fertilisers to improve the quality of your production, improve pasture and animal health, detoxify the soil, increase water retention, increase drainage capacity, increase carbon and top soil depth, meet new consumer quality demands, become sustainable — and look after the environment — all for the price of our fertiliser, “Contact Mike Hare (Coromandel) on 021 0203 6926, Neil Blakeman (Waikato) on 027 502 3036, and Ian Garlick (Bay of Plenty) on 021 738 521 — alternatively, you can ring Agrissentials direct on 0800 843 539.”

JUNE 2013
Mystery and innovation for Fieldays New Zealand’s agricultural, pastoral and agri-business showcase on the world stage returns next month when the National Agricultural Fieldays will be held from June 12–15. Now in its 45th year at the Mystery Creek Events Centre, 10 minutes south of Hamilton, the event is expected to build again on the 125,000 visitor count for last year, and the site will again resound to exhibitions, competitions and prizes and hospitality. “Our premier feature theme for 2013 is ‘Getting down to Business in the Global Economy’,” says CEO, Jon Calder. “We provide a platform for New Zealand’s leading products and services to be presented to the world.” A major new event this year will be the Fieldays Innovation Den — Pitch for Investment — a new ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event. SODA Inc. a gathering of high profile New Zealand business leaders committed to promote business innovation, has signed a partnership with Fieldays to
see New Zealand inventors pitching to investors. SODA will select up to ten commercially viable inventions to showcase, and will support the inventors to get their invention pitch ready prior to the big event. “Innovation has always been at the heart of what happens at Mystery Creek,” says Mr Calder. “It’s one of the principles on which it was founded and we’ve seen a number of individuals and companies launch new products and innovations and go on to achieve global success. Our partnership with SODA builds on this and enables us to help foster entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity in new ways, creating a programme which gives aspiring innovators a path to market.” continued on page 14…

Mystery and innovation for Fieldays SODA CEO, Cheryl Reynolds, added: “It’s a great opportunity to help New Zealand investors to spot some great ideas worthy of investment. It will also provide support to Kiwi inventors who are really motivated and want to develop their skills to help build a viable business model around their inventions to take them into global markets.” Innovation is also the name of the game for this year’s Rural Bachelor of the Year contest.
“In keeping with our global theme, this year we are going trans-Tasman and as well as six good Kiwi blokes, we’ll be searching for two Australians to join the competition,” said Jon Calder. In an ‘Amazing Race’ style twist to the competition, entrants will be flown to a secret location on Monday June 10, and need to make their way to Fieldays by 5pm the following day, stopping in specific towns along the way to complete various tasks.

Backache and lasting spinal damage Relief is at hand reports Sue from The Better Back Company. “Farmers are busy people and they’re not coming to town for treatments and medical visits. Breaking the silence on men’s health New Zealand men are typically silent when it comes to their health. The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is encouraging men to use the Fieldays to think about their health, as well as the health of their farms and businesses. Men still access health services less than women and when they do visit the doctor, they typically present late, denying themselves the chance of early detection and treatment. The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society will be at Fieldays this year, encouraging men to talk about their health, learn what to look for and when a visit to the doctor is a must. “Statistics for men are poor. More men than women are diagnosed with cancer and more men die from it,” says Cancer Society spokesperson, Rachael
Mounsey. “Getting a doctor’s check-up can make all the difference for men’s health. The earlier you get diagnosed and treated, the better the chances are for a good outcome.” “Our 6.5 metre inflatable colossal colon will be the main focus of the Cancer Society’s site, allowing people to see firsthand the damage caused by poor bowel health. With so many men in one place, Fieldays is the perfect location to talk about men’s health. “We hope our site will help people, in particular men, to become more aware of their health and the importance of talking to their doctor if concerns arise,” says Rachael. You can find the Cancer Society and their colossal colon in the Rural Living Marquee, site LS116.
all become easier with the support this belt gives. Or, if the pain from strain develops, a Nada Chair BACK-UP can effortlessly train correct posture; often giving instant relief from the niggles of an old injury, disc issues and medical conditions. Here’s what Mike, one Southern farmer said. I purchased a LUMBARJACK support belt (excellent for drenching sheep, marking calves, lifting heavy items and general farm work I might add) and a BackUp for the dreaded office work. Before, I had massage to free up tight muscles and get temporary relief from ongoing pain. Using these products my pain levels are manageable, I have increased fitness because of less pain, and life is far more enjoyable. I let my Father (broken retired farmer) try out the BACK-UP and he thought it was great.

to deliver its potential,” says director-general, Wayne McNee. “Fielday’s creates opportunities for fresh ways to take our agriculture and primary sector to the world. The theme, ‘getting down to business in the global economy’ is highly relevant as global demand soars and New Zealand is recognised as having the capabilities to feed the world.” This year, the Mystery Creek pavilion has been redesigned and segregated from general sites to offer an area promoting solutions to global economic challenges. “Exhibits in this area attract a high level of media focus.” says Mr McNee. The ministry will be in the main pavilion at Mystery Creek as well as running a series of seminars that will be open to all visitors. “The fieldays will be a showcase for our primary industries and an excellent venue to discuss future growth,” said Mr McNee.

Sulphation is a major problem with lead-acid batteries and the less they’re used the worse it is. “From the moment they make a battery and charge it up it starts to sulphate,” says Gerard Anselmi of Recharge, “The sulphation deposit eats the lead plates away and causes a mechanical fault and premature battery failure so you buy them with sulphation and they only get worse till they die.”

Protect your bike and farm equipment long-term Protecting much cherished machinery assets is a nobrainer — it translates into longer life, less repairs and good operational use. “From your faithful old Landrover to your latest quad bike, it is essential that you protect your gear from rust or corrosion,” says Prolan New Zealand director, Murray Shaw.
areas and is safe on rubbers and wiring. The new Prolan Enduro grade leaves a shiny finish and protects chassis for long periods. It also resists cold water blasting and performs well in the harshest environments, including salt, cow manure and fertiliser among others.
“They give you some wonderful adventures together — and one of the reasons they last so well is the TLC they receive from time to time. Sometimes there are some big gaps between the times, but they serve you well.”
Murray adds: “Prolan has many uses around the workshop. Several wellknown speciality workshops are now using Prolan lubricants and grease. “It is a good penetrating lubricant for those seized parts and also tools, locks, door hinges and much more.
Murray says the key to good rust and corrosion prevention is simple. “One of the reasons they last so well is they are properly cleaned underneath and then treated by applying protective coatings to the chassis and underside. In the past, engine oil amongst other things has been sprayed inside the chassis rails and underneath.
“In fact, as a testament to its versatility, cranes and rigging used to remove the containers off the cargo ship, Rena, that ran aground on Astrolabe reef at Tauranga have been protected from being exposed to the harsh salt water conditions and corrosion with Prolan.
“Now Prolan is available and it’s a much better and environmentally friendly product which is proving itself over the years. The main ingredient is protective lanolin — straight off the sheep’s back — in a range of non-toxic lubricants and corrosion inhibitors that are safe and easy to apply. Once sprayed on, Prolan gets into all those hard-to-reach
“If you plan to keep your prized assets for a good many years yet, Prolan can ensure there will be many more adventures to be had. Remember — ‘it’s never too late to protect your mate’.
Pure water boosts farming profits Throughout New Zealand most farms or lifestyle blocks have water quality issues. Whether it is iron, manganese, boron, arsenic, turbidity or pathogens, they all pose a risk or are a hindrance to the farm owner and a danger to animal health. Forsi Innovations of Matamata, is a progressive company that has developed an advanced automated water filtration system, specifically designed for use on dairy farms. The system is designed to filter out all contaminants and bring the water back to a high standard. ”We are market leaders in the innovation of farm water filtration,” says Sales and Marketing manager Craig Hawes. “Not many filtration companies can offer the technology, quality and expertise we can.” Studies have shown that if dairy cows drink quality water their milk production

will increase. Dairy cows are extremely sensitive to the taste of iron and manganese in the water supply — more so in fact, than humans. Increased water quantity and quality equates to increased profit for the vital dairy sector. Forsi Innovations have developed what they believe is New Zealand’s most innovative effluent recycling system, helping farmers avoid costly penalties from failed effluent compliance. The system processes effluent, and separates the solids from the liquid which is then processed to produce clean, clear, pathogen-free water. This can be utilised for wash down, or for irrigation. Steps like these also help with variation six for water allocation on dairy farms, as the farm no longer needs to pump as much water from the ground. The combination of water, concrete and animal effluent can be a dangerous one underfoot, and Sure and Safe is a Cambridge-based company that provides an effecient remedy. “Our core business is providing a non-slip concrete re-texturing service to owners of dairy sheds and feedpads,” says company director, Dave Peters. “We have also undertaken work on stables and commercial sites. We strip away the top layer of slippery concrete leaving an exposed concrete-type finish but with non-rounded aggregate giving a 100% traction finish that stands the test of time and remains non-slip through mud muck and effluent,

How you can save money by keeping your septic Come see us at site Pe29 system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. a malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. there are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it.This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs.Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be
operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce SeptiCure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. a satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. A magic solution Effluent is the bane of farming life, a by product of animal husbandry that can heavily impact the bottom line at the bank. But it is a fact of life and it’s here forever, so treatment is the key to reducing its impact. “Traditionally, this process involved having to spend many, many dollars on new pumps, stirrers, pond liners and spreaders,” says the managing director of Biomagic, Clive Breeds. “After all, is that not how everyone does it, thinking it will all be plain sailing from here on in?”
is a product called Impact, by BioMagic Ltd. Impact is a safe and easy to use biological product. Biologicals have been around awhile, but this is a huge step up in efficacy, affordability and practicality. It can can turn problem effluent into a valuable resource.” Mr Breed said the product eliminates most of the sludge, crusting and odour in effluent ponds.
“Thick crust, odours and sludge buildup, having to stir it all the time, and the possibility of expensive liner damage when you inevitably need to have it dug out.
“Simply add to wash down water once a month. It’s that easy. Impact also converts, stabilises and balances nutrients, making them more plant available, depending on local environments. We have had these farmer endorsements:

One of the most vexing ailments for mankind has always been back pain and an innovative kiwi company has found a solution for many sufferers.
Inversion New Zealand was started nearly six years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, and their Teeter Hang-Up product, a specially designed apparatus, will be on display at Field days. Dave had suffered over 20 years of back pain from degenerated discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option — as long as I could still walk, there was hope,” he said. While on an overseas trip, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain completely disappeared and was gone for about 30 minutes. Nothing had done that before.” Dave did not believe it would fix him but he knew he had a place to go every time he wanted some relief. “To my surprise the more I used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months I was completely pain-free.“I couldn’t believe it. “I had spent around $15,000 in ten years on every form of treatment available, and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.” The Hare’s decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand, and Inversion New Zealand was born.
“Over the years INZ has helped thousands of people get amazing relief from pain and we have seen excellent results not only with backs, but hips, knees, necks, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure, and lots more. “We have testimonials from people with over 50 years of back problems, and even have the Teeter in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children.” Dave adds that “blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent. For the ageing population it maintains the health of the brain as we all get older.” INZ now has a division putting the product into industry, as back pain costs companies a considerable amount of lost production. “This year we have doubled the size of the stand in the Lifestyle marquee at Gate Four, so we can treat more people” said Dave, adding that if he had he not tried the Teeter he would never have bought one. “That is why we do the shows — people need to try it for themselves. We let the tables do the talking. Come along for a free treatment. If you have completely resigned yourself to having back pain for the rest of your life, the chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.”
BACK or NECK PAIN? If you suffer from Back or Neck Pain then come along to our stand in the Lifestyle Marquee at the National Fieldays on the 12th to the 15th June. In 2006, a three and a half year medical study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was completed in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at Newcastle General Hospital. It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment.

large but still reasonable fragile market.
Forestry Market Report Allan Laurie MNZIF Laurie Forestry Ltd The fortunes of the forestry continue to improve with further small lifts in export prices this month. Wharf gate prices in New Zealand now reflect some good returns to forest owners and for the moment at least it looks like business as usual.
sustained level of improved prices with anticipated supply demand statistics globally, appear to support continuing strength. Outside of storms, tempests, conflagrations and generally being at war over resources it looks like those of us who decided to invest in this wonderful industry 30+ years ago look well vindicated. Thus it is time for many more to now follow suit and it has never been more timely to remember the only way forward for climate, country and the planet, is to get out there and plant more trees!
NZ is totally dependent on the construction industry in China with the vast majority of Radiata pine logs sold, milled for lumber or plywood to hold up concrete. This reliance on one key market segment is a concern long term. NZ will need to invest heavily in this market if we desire a level of long term sustainability and strong pricing points. In this regard we simply have few options but, frankly speaking, we have been singularly inattentive to this key requirement in the past. Meanwhile, NZ side, volumes and pricing hold steady. Many saw mill owners are nervous about supply and pricing going forward. Although I am yet to see any movement in price in Canterbury, there are some gains being experienced in domestic log grades in other regions. For the balance of 2013 I see some continuing price point pressure in the domestic segment.
I have just returned from another week in the market in China, visiting sawmills, plywood plants and ports. This trip has revealed a market in a reasonable state of flux with log prices holding but wholesale and retail prices for lumber exiting factories (called saw mills in NZ) continuing to hold at previous levels. This ultimately means factory owners are suffering — some badly and foreclosures continue to be spoken of with regularity. This current situation is just starting to see pricing pressures coming in to lumber retail segments which means local traders are starting to gain some ground. However of some concern is to find consumption at low to moderate levels compared to the same time last year. The concerns are therefore, that any attempt to lift lumber retail prices is not supported by strong sales in the construction sector. Over-riding this domestic situation in China, is the lack of supply of logs
from other countries with volumes not arriving from the Pacific North West (PNW) as previously predicted. Whilst NZ and Australia have been pumping the volumes in, other supply countries have not. For the moment there is a degree of comfort in a 3million cubic metre inventory with background nervousness about medium long term supply. Hence we are continuing to see CFR prices (US$ cost per cubic metre landed in China) firm and NZ suppliers particularly, forcing the hand of the market. My review of this situation suggests a level of caution. Indeed we face a potential crash and burn situation if NZ suppliers continue to force prices up. As prices reach a critical level, others can be expected to enter the market with PNW suppliers, for example, chasing the best price point options. This could lead to a significant lift in supply as PNW can divert large volumes very quickly. It is therefore time to be cautious in this

On the up side some of the larger suppliers are starting to move lumber prices upward — albeit no-where near levels that would cause excitement. For the moment it is a move in the right direction, and one which we may see replicated across the sector. Demand will need to increase significantly if continuing price lifts are to be promulgated to a level that would see gains at the forest gate.

Hoof Print With Fred Hoekstra
Is your farm cow-friendly? The summer is long gone. Not too many hot days left anymore, and there is much more rain instead — to the relief of many around the country. I can’t believe the season is nearly over. Cows seem to be more convinced than I am on this point! The end of the season is certainly putting more stress on them. They are becoming lethargic, walking to and from the cow shed seems a big task for them. This is one of the stresses that have a big impact on the hoof health of your animals.
Ask any farmer who has moved to a 16-hour milking programme and they will tell you how the cows change. They have more energy and they are livelier. That is just a clear sign that cows are not machines and that they function differently under different circumstances. To me, it seems that we often farm in a way where we make the cows work with us and they often have to put up with whatever situation we put them in, rather than us trying to change things to work with the cows. When I go out to a farm for a consultancy visit, I am very interested in the cow comfort aspect of farming. I look at things like walking time and milking time. It is very important to treat the cows correctly when handled.
2
Pushing cows is not the right way, we all know that. Why do some farmers have problems with cows being pushed too hard? But what if cows just don’t want to walk? You have to push them

just to get them moving. It seems like the more we push our cows, the more they work against us. It is much better to get a cow walking by “dangling a carrot” in front of them instead of using a whip. Is there much difference in the amount of physical force between the two ways of doing it? The difference will be very minimal, certainly not enough to cause the damage that we see in the hooves. The stress levels, however, are much higher when cows are being pushed. So, when we want to minimise lameness we need to minimise stress on the cows. What can we do to make our farms and management styles more cow friendly? I guess, in order to answer that question, we need to know what a cowfriendly environment looks like. I think that when a cow is spending 21 hours a day in a paddock with a wellbalanced diet, and a plentiful supply thereof, we are making a good start.

Dairying Soil Matters — with Peter Burton What we can learn from the clover root weevil With the gap steadily closing between the cost of producing a kilogramme of milk solids and the amount of money received, the arrival of the clover root weevil this season is unwelcome. Healthy clover in a permanent clover rye grass pasture is capable of fixing more than enough nitrogen for the production of 18,000+ kilogrammes of dry matter annually. In the short term applying fertiliser nitrogen seems the only logical solution to the damage caused by the root weevil. A severe root weevil infestation may effectively reduce the amount of clover fixed nitrogen by as much as 90%. This suggests that a little in excess of 200kgN/ha should be applied to maintain normal pasture production. Urea, the cheapest form of fertiliser nitrogen, is currently $745.00+GST/ tonne ex store, which means the cost of 200kgN is $323.91+GST. That’s a cost of $48,586.95 for 150ha without the cost of cartage and spreading, roughly the price of a new ute. A keen trout fishing neighbour remarked recently that if only he could interrogate the trout he catches he could catch a lot more.
Although it would be useful to communicate directly with clover root weevil it’s not necessary in order to know why they are currently attacking clover in dairy pasture. It’s not all clover that is dealt to and it’s not just clover in dairy pasture that is affected. Weevil’s don’t know what type of animal is grazing the pasture, so it’s not a problem specific to pastures grazed by dairy animals. The factor common to most intensive dairy farming is the use of nitrogen fertiliser. In our view regular fertiliser nitrogen always precedes damage by pests. In pasture the role of pests is to ensure that weakened plants are not able to grow to maturity and produce seed, — only the strongest survive which is why not all clover is damaged. Clovers flourish in pastures as plant available nitrogen declines, hence the application of fertiliser nitrogen reduces the reason for their existence. The plants that do survive struggle to compete with grass for moisture, nutrient, and sunlight, and therefore become the target of both flea and weevil. Conversely reducing the amount of
nitrogen applied and lifting plant available calcium will bring about resurgence in the amount of clover in the sward. Clovers contain up to four times the calcium of rye grasses, just one of the reasons that animals grazing clover dominant pasture produce more and grow more rapidly than stock grazing other species.
years to intensive dairy and grazing properties throughout both islands. Measures from six properties from September to December in 2006 using DoloZest based nutrient programmes showed they contained twice as much clover compared to pasture from six properties using conventional nitrogen driven systems.
Not only is extra calcium beneficial it is important that it becomes available to plants as they require it. This work is largely done by fungi, bacteria and worms, and the beneficial ones thrive in a calcium rich environment.
The percentage of the clover in the pasture from the conventional properties averaged 13% over the four months with 27% clover content in the pastures using DoloZest based programmes. Not only is the clover content higher in properties applying DoloZest, but damage by clover flea and weevil is limited to such an extent that less than 20kgN/ha is required to grow in excess of 18 tonne of pasture in a twelve month period.
DoloZest, made by ESI using Golden bay Dolomite is available throughout the South Island. It contains both calcium and magnesium along with a wide range of selected soil friendly fungi and bacteria and has been applied over the last eight Transporter + Truck & Trailers available for bulk delivery

Reaching out with rural support
by Denise Gunn
Jo Rangooni has always been involved with the rural community. She grew up on a 450 acre property that her father managed near Bulls, watched the ploughmen harness horses to pull ploughs, and helped out with docking and other farm chores. “It was an incredible lifestyle,” said Jo. After training as a teacher, Jo’s career took her to Manchester Street School in Feilding, commuting each day from the 10 acre lifestyle block she lived on with her family at Mount Biggs. For almost two decades Jo has been involved with Manawatu Rural Support Services. The society was established in 1994. Manawatu Rural Support Services endeavours to ensure the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities in the northern Manawatu district and the Pohangina Valley. Jo currently holds the position of chairperson. “I knew Judy Jack from Rewa who pulled together a group of people who formed an incorporated society and obtained funding to pay for a rural worker to visit all homes in the northern Manawatu.
“We all agreed that rural people are very independent and will not ask for help.” Jo said the group also agreed that offering help, support and information at the early stage of an issue is much better for everyone as well as saving money. Manawatu Rural Support Services is based on a service started by Sister Mary Dunn. This catholic nun travelled by campervan through the Rangitikei and Hunterville area, calling at every property, contacting and supporting rural families. Although this service was carried on for a period of time in the Rangitikei by another group, it folded around the time Manawatu Rural Support Services formed. The society’s mission is to visit, empower, provide home-based support services and referrals to appropriate agencies; and to provide non-judgemental, non-discriminatory, compassionate, caring support to those in need.

Fifteen members currently make up the incorporated society with six of those members on the management committee. Although it is entirely volunteer work, the two rural community workers are part-time paid positions. Manchester House in Feilding is also paid to manage and support these workers. Gypsy Week
Rural Accounting Specialists
On the road again
by Paul Campbell
The annual migration of the New Zealand dairy industry is coming round again with two to three busy weeks which herald the start of the new dairy season, with farms changing hands and share milkers moving on to new contracts. Dairy herds will also be moving on to new pastures, but in all likelihood, movement will be somewhat restricted after the prolonged drought, which has yet to see any real recovery of feed stocks as winter closes in. This has been recognised by the fact that the drought relief for the farming sector will stay in force until September, when it’s hoped that spring growth will see things settle back to something like normal. But drought or not, the sheer weight of the dairy industry, with more cows than people in New Zealand makes Gypsy Week a significant event. To the forefront at this time are local councils, as stock take to the road in trucks, or in local cases, to the road on the hoof. Stock transports are being reminded to keep the highways and byways clear of effluent discharge or spillage. Stock should be ‘stood’ overnight, before being embarked. Road transport officials point out that effluent from trucks can create hazards for motorists,
Waterways can also be fouled with effluent washed into them.

‘Truck drivers should ensure their effluent storage tanks are emptied before each load and regularly use stock truck effluent disposal sites’, states a Federated Farmers’ advice leaflet. As well as animals, hundreds of households may be on the move as well, as being a sharemilker taking up a new contract means having all of your household possessions in a truck with your stock not far behind. Federated Farmers has issued tips to smooth the way over Gypsy Week. These include:

Booking stock transport in advance and asking for an estimated time of arrival to allow cows to stand off for the recommended minimum time. Gypsy Week
Before you pack up, back up Heading to greener pastures this Gypsy Day? Before you pack up your computer, whether it’s an old faithful desktop or a more portable notebook, have you backed up its hard disk drive? If the answer is no, ask yourself what impact losing the information stored on your device would have on your family and your business. There’s probably photographs of long forgotten family events, important financial records and a to-do list this upcoming season. Before packing up grab yourself an external hard disk drive — about twice the capacity of your machine’s hard drive is ideal. Drives from the likes of manufacturers like Western Digital cost a hundred or so dollars and come with their own automated backup software. If the enclosed instructions aren’t clear try Googling the make and model online with the word backup. The last three versions of Windows, Vista, 7 and 8, also come with their
own backup software. Find out how to use it at microsoft.com and search for the word backup. If you’re running Windows XP you should consider buying a new machine before next April when Microsoft ends support for the operating system by no longer providing security patches over the internet. It’s a good idea to have more than one backup in case your hard disk drive fails. Don’t rely on USB drives, which are small and can be easily lost, or CD-ROM or DVD-ROM discs, which can be scratched and have a reasonably short life.
