ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Bill English, deputy prime minister, speaks at the DairyNZ Farmers’ Forum

Deputy prime minister Bill English, Fonterra CEO Theo Spierings and Rabobank head of food and agribusiness research and advisory Tim Hunt, all reiterated that global demand for dairy products will continue to grow. Mr English said that in the government’s view, the dairy industry will remain the engine room of growth as the second biggest New Zealand exporter behind tourism. But facing up to the reduced milk price is the current challenge. “The next five years is the real test for how competitive we really are on the global market. We all got a bit complacent of the New Zealand dairy industry’s dominance in global markets.” Mr Hunt said Rabobank’s expectations were that demand for milk will continue to grow, led by emerging markets. “We are amidst a distressing ‘super cycle’ and the protracted downturn looks likely to extend into the 2016/17 season,” says Mr Hunt. Fonterra CEO Theo Spierings said the long-term trend

for dairy is good and the globally traded dairy market involves 66 billion litres of milk and that is projected to increase to 91 billion litres by 2020. “That is why the long-term prospects of dairy are good.” The topic of ‘disruption’ also came up throughout the two-day event. Mr Spierings said dairy needed to avoid falling into similar situations as the media, taxis and music, which have all been disrupted by new business models which have seized business. “Retail is the next in disruption because of online buying,” said Mr Spierings. “So we need to be part of that because the new generation has different nutritional needs and think of food differently. Nutritional needs are going to expand extremely fast.” Mr Spierings said Fonterra is currently working on a ‘disrupt’ business model. “If we do not disrupt, we will be disrupted. Disruptive business models — that will bring change, that will make a difference.”

The Fieldays 2016 Feature theme, Collaborate to Accelerate Growth, has been designed to encourage and facilitate industry-wide collaboration within the rural and primary sectors in an effort to accelerate innovative industry growth. By bringing all facets of the agricultural industry together in one place, Fieldays is able to create the perfect platform on which collaboration can take place. Innovation is one of the three pillars of Fieldays and plays an enormous role in the advancement of agriculture. Collaboration is an important part of Fieldays and we are incredibly fortunate to have a stable of partners and sponsors that support Fieldays, led by our Principal Partners — the University of Waikato, ANZ, Xero and Vodafone. Our relationship with our Principal Partners continues to grow and evolve as we find new ways to collaborate to showcase each other’s strengths, both during and outside of Fieldays. arl and his wife Storm-Lee manage the business alongside Tony and his wife Karen. “I was in sales and marketing and my dad was an engineer and we were looking for investment opportunities. This established Macadamia Nut orchard came up for sale so we investigated and researched the idea and found it was a really exciting venture. It took two years before we acquired the property,” said Carl. “We have now owned it for four years. The factory and base product was all here and we have expanded and remarketed bits and pieces and progressed from a farm operation to a business. “We grow our own nuts and process nuts for others. This includes drying, cracking and grading them.” The family have invested heavily in processing

equipment to ensure that the end product is of superior quality. The orchard itself is set on an elevated site that is North facing and provides a microclimate which is ideal for a flourishing Macadamia Orchard, and they employ six local staff and up to 10 during their peak season. “We like to encourage locals with work. We have growers from all over the country supply us with nuts as well. We harvest by hand from June to September — this is when the trees receive their annual pruning. They need an abundance of sun and air to promote a healthy crop for the next year. Macadamia trees require sufficient nutrition in advance of cropping as the production of oil within the Macadamia nut has a huge draw on the tree’s nutrition reserves.” The trees are fertilised in Autumn and Spring, and soil and foliage samples are

taken twice a year to ensure nutrients are maintained at optimum levels. “We are completely spray free and encourage as much bird and bee life as we can as this helps keep bugs and pests down and the bees help us pollinate. We have tuis, wood pigeons, quails, ducks and pheasants. “Once harvested they are husked within 24 hours of picking to prevent inside quality deterioration. They are put into drying bins and the drying system is computer monitored 24 hours a day. This can take 4-6 weeks and ensures drying within the correct time frame and at right temperature to protect the oil quality. “They are then sent to the nut cracker machine and the kernel is graded and separated into whole kernel and half kernels. Once the quality assurance

officer is happy we bag the different styles and store them for collection or delivery.” Carl says macadamia growing takes a lot of energy. “You grow the tree and it takes approximately seven to eight years to see a yield which should increase yearly depending how you care for your trees. It can take up to five months to harvest an orchard. “We have a press now and extract the oil. It is a fantastic product and full of good properties. It is a clear oil like water but it is very robust. It lowers cholesterol, keeps nails and hair shiny. We sell direct to the public through the markets. “It is a boutique industry. We pride ourselves on having the ability to wholesale New Zealand grown

We are now breaking into tourism with tour buses from Auckland to Hobbiton. We give a full orchard and factory tour and open up our market table for them. On June 1 we will be starting public tours at $17.50 per head on a Tuesday and

There is a bigger demand here than we can supply — we don’t export anything, we can’t grow enough or get enough to supply the demand here in New Zealand. If there are any growers out there who want to sell us their macadamia nuts please contact us. We like to work with growers and support them as much as possible.”

he couple, originally from rural backgrounds in Holland, moved to New Zealand in the early 80s and worked as contract milkers and sharemilkers before purchasing a 50acre farm in Waihou nestled beneath Mt Te Aroha. Driven by their passion for goats, who they fondly refer to as ‘the girls’, they decided to pursue their dream lifestyle and so their cheese-making business was born. “We started with Angora goats at first. When we became

a certified organic farm in 2000 we thought why not utilise the goats and we started milking. Then we decided to get into cheese,” says Jeanne. Now they milk 30 Saanen and AngloNubian goats and keep a flock of about 50 including the young ones and bucks. “Making cheese is a journey for us,” she says. “It goes right back to looking after the land and the girls. We love them so much and making the cheese is just the end trophy. It is really all about the girls. They are the

most important part of our team.” The farm is BIO GRO Certified organic which means all farming and cheesemaking practices are performed to BIO GRO standards and over the years they have won many awards including New Zealand Champion Cheesemaker Award for 2014 and 2016. Jeanne says the entire process of making their cheese from the pasture to the plate is done with the utmost of care. Their goats graze on herbicide and pesticide free pastures and are treated with homeopathic and herbal remedies if needed. In December 2012 they became pioneers of New Zealand-made raw goat's cheese. Jeanne says it was a long journey because everything was new and it was the first time anyone was allowed to do it. “The Ministry of Primary Industries still had to put all the requirements and regulations in place so it took about twoand-a-half years to get registered. “When things are done thoroughly and carefully, raw milk is a great healthy option. We strongly believe that raw milk products benefit health more than pasteurised because the pasteurisation process destroys vital enzymes and Fieldays® Special

vitamins. “Provided that everything before the milking is done well such as looking after the land, the animals and having top hygiene, it is a really safe and healthy product.” Jeanne and John make each cheese carefully by hand and it is left to mature for six to eight weeks on kahikatea wooden shelves. “We are happy if we break even. Our biggest reward is something that can’t be measured by money — it is our lifestyle. We can do something we love doing. We love our girls and when we wake up in the morning we can’t wait to see them, they are part of our family.” They milk twice a day and each year the female goats go on maternity leave for eight to ten weeks. “It is good to have that break because it is hard work for all of us. We don’t mind the work because it is our choice, but it is a very busy life. We have to follow a lot of regulations and tests with the raw milk. That's why the raw milk cheese is more expensive. The cost involved with complying with the regulations is quite high.” They are hoping that as raw milk cheese catches on, the costs involved will decrease as is the case in Europe. “New Zealand has really caught up

The ULTIMATE fencing tool  Using Batten King takes less than one minute per batten or just a few seconds using a staple gun. It is a one man operation saving time and halving labour.  The batten is held in place by one wire allowing staples to be applied to the other wires in a nice even manner.  It works as a dolly whilst stapling providing a firm, stable surface to hit against while hammering or using a staple gun.  Batten King is a safer way to fence because it eliminates the need to physically hold the batten in place while stapling. This eliminates the risk of injury via jarring or accidentally hitting hands with a hammer.

Commodity prices or cash flow — You choose! There are some positive things happening and here at Agrissentials we are holding our ground and moving forward and this is reflected in farmers enquiring, not only about our fertilisers, but also about the requirements needed to become organically certified. This is right down our track with our system; the changeover from chemical to certified natural is seamless. Agrissentials’ package is extremely simple as it is focused completely on the soil. Our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers bring life, health and vitality back to the soil. Get the soil right and everything above the soil falls into place. The health and vitality

generated, stimulates pastures, fruit and vegetables, orchards, vineyards, animals and people. All life on the planet is dependent upon mineral, natural (not synthetic) mineral. Our live, living, BioGro certified fertilisers are mineral rich and microbial rich. The micro-organisms are the first creatures to dine at the mineral table, converting those natural minerals to a

plant available form and storing them in the humus that they produce, so that the minerals do not leach from the soil. The plant draws on the minerals it wants from the humus, via the plant roots. The minerals in this form are recognised by the plant at the cellular level, the ultimate level for plant uptake for energy and growth. The big benefit from this system is that the humus produced by the microorganisms not only holds minerals, but also, moisture; increasing the water retention capability of the soil. Rule of thumb calculations state that good levels of humus in the soil can reduce irrigation requirements by 50 percent. So, with good levels of humus, the water retained will help you through the drought periods. The path to certified organic production takes 3 years. You can choose between BioGro or Asura. Agrissentials has been BioGro certified since 1995 and because BioGro is IFOAM accredited that covers entry into all current world markets. Agrissentials have developed a three year fertiliser programme in line with the certification programme, whereby the price of our fertilisers will be locked in for the three year period, for farmers changing to a certified programme. The consumer call for safe, certified,

nutritiously dense food is growing stronger every day and the price for certified produce is climbing. The 2016 NZ organic market report states that 2 out of 3 kiwis are now buying organics through grocery and specialty stores. This is a 127% increase since 2012. By going certified organic you can eliminate chemical production and move away from the chains of commodity marketing, where there is very little future. So, in today’s market another door and opportunity has opened up to which we need to take full advantage. Talking to the experts For the past couple of years National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research scientists have been at Fieldays talking to farmers about its latest tool that uses weather data to tailor forecasts for individual farms. This year NIWA is going one better by offering and insight into how it can assist farmers with all their water needs. NIWA is New Zealand’s freshwater authority and can advise on everything from monitoring and managing water quality to the best natural solution for preventing or treating farm run-off. At Mystery Creek this year, NIWA’s team of experts is focussing on solutions that don’t compromise farm profitability but can help reduce impact on the environment. One NIWA scientist has designed an anaerobic digester pond that was originally aimed to control piggery odour. Now it also turns the pig waste into biofuel — a win-win that uses high waste output to help fuel a high demand for electricity and heat. For farmers considering restoring or constructing wetlands on their properties, NIWA has developed guidelines for construction to treat tile drainage flows from grazed pastures. NIWA is also highly experienced with irrigation schemes and has the capacity to model hydrological scenarios to consider the implications of potential schemes. Scientists will also be on hand to talk to farmers about a practical web-based tool to help maximise pasture growth and minimise water and nutrient losses.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Broadband made easier Wireless Nation is a specialist rural broadband provider connecting homes and businesses throughout the Waikato region over the past 10 years. RBI Wireless Towers are continually being upgraded to 4G, providing broadband speeds fast enough to stream Netflix smoothly and provide the ability to use multiple devices connected to the internet at once. With Wireless Nation’s RBI Self-install option, the wireless signal is received straight from the modem, meaning there’s no need for an antenna to be installed on your roof — saving you valuable time and money. Wireless Nation plans start from $69+GST per month. For those outside coverage areas of cell towers, or not on the fixed wire (copper wire) network, satellite broadband is the only other alternative. Wireless Nation’s satellite broadband network is fast, reliable, modern and future proofed, which means that

when faster speeds become available they’ll be able to offer them. Due to the advanced technology they use compared to competing networks, the connection is less likely to be affected by rain fade, storms and other weather conditions. They’ve also overcome previous limitations of a satellite connection by using smart data acceleration and caching technology which leaves users with a smooth and fast browsing experience. If you’re dissatisfied with your current satellite service, give Wireless Nation a call and in most cases, you’ll be able to switch over to their more reliable network through a simple modem switch. If you’re a PGG Wrightson member or an ASB Rural customer, you’re entitled to a better deal on your rural broadband through their special partner offers.

The savvy touch

A wastewater care solution If you’re looking for an innovative wastewater treatment system that is environmentally friendly and will save you money, then look no further than the NaturalFlow System which is designed to make use of nature’s own processes. Waterflow New Zealand Ltd marketing manager Dean Hoyle explains: “Nature is one huge recycling mechanism, and what our system does is harness those natural processes and forces that have been quietly working together for thousands of years to break down and decompose waste all around us to treat and break down your wastewater until it is perfectly safe to be re-introduced into the environment.” The company has devoted almost a decade and significant sums into research and development. The NaturalFlow System uses vermiculture to reduce the solids by up to 95 per cent, creating in the process valuable water soluble nutrients that can be recycled safely back into the environment. “No other system has the capacity to reduce solids by this amount. We are very much working with nature in our processes, keeping it simple and using power-free natural aeration processes instead of mechanical pumps. “There are no mechanically moving parts involved in the treatment of waste solids and liquids, reducing maintenance processes to practically zero,” says Mr Hoyle.

CAMBRIDGE FOREST & NATIVE NURSERY

While the initial investment is the same, from the time you install NaturalFlow, you are saving, with any other conventional system, you start spending. “This is the really big positive our product offers. It’s a case of looking at the longer-term picture, not just the upfront purchase price.” Customers agree they made the right choice when selecting a NaturalFlow system. “We choose NaturalFlow because we wanted an environmentally friendly system that didn’t require expensive, ongoing maintenance. Our system has delivered exactly what we wanted. If you want a simple, low cost, environmentally friendly sewage treatment system you really can’t go wrong with Natural Flow.” The team at Waterflow New Zealand Ltd have years of experience with all types of water handling including water storage tanks and installation through to reticulation, filtration, UV treatment, wastewater and septic treatment systems, including council designs and installation and also any farm, domestic and rural drainage.

FOREST OR RIPARIAN PLANTING?

Frustrated at the lack of quality products on the New Zealand market for horses, Steve and Linsey Cleary combined their respective science and aromatherapy degrees with their love of all things equine, and started blending things in their garage to create chemical-free horse-care products.

Savvy Touch Steve and Linsey Cleary

It wasn’t long before people noticed a change in their horses’ coats and feet and wanted to know the secret, so Savvy Touch was born. They now offer a range of natural products, manufactured in New Zealand for both horses and humans, using the best ingredients available. “Savvy Touch is a naturally based range that has been designed and manufactured in New Zealand. We are seeing amazing results with people suffering from eczema, contact dermatitis, arthritis and breathing issues just to name a few,” says Linsey. They

have only one aim to bring you and your horses the ultimate products. They even guarantee that to ensure quality and effectiveness, every product was, is and will be tested on humans before horses. In the short time the products have been available, they have developed a positive reputation with visible results on horses and humans that are now used by individual horse lovers in the biggest race stables and TB stud farms. A life changing business Supporting Wanganui Enterprises is supporting the rehabilitation, training and employment of people living with disabilities.

Check out our Fieldays Deals at SITE LS82

Wanganui Enterprises charitable trust was formed in 1979 to operate as a Not for Profit community business and opened their doors in 1981. Since then the trust has been operating as an industrial work unit successfully manufacturing and selling a range of five star products throughout New Zealand. Manager Andy Lynn says being in the business of changing people’s lives is immensely rewarding. “It’s a very challenging business and we get very limited government funding. We make and sell products throughout the North Island. “Wanganui Enterprises is not the end game for our people, it is just a stepping stone. “Getting a job is difficult for anyone, particularly in this day and age, and if you have a disability you are even more disadvantaged. What we do here is bring skills and experience that makes them quite valuable to other organisations. We take away some of the barriers that prevent people getting jobs and work with them to get them into open employment. “We actually change people’s lives. Having a place to work and being able to develop skills has an effect on people in terms of health, happiness and wellbeing. All of those things change in the individuals and we love seeing that.”

They aim to provide disabled persons with the dignity and knowledge that his or her earning capacity is related in terms of remuneration to an able bodied worker. Their team manufacture dog kennels, garden products and trellises, and offer custom wood manufacturing as well as light engineering services, general fabrication, welding, pipe and bar bending, component metal cutting and much more.

EVER SINCE HE WAS OLD ENOUGH TO HOLD A GUN, CAMBRIDGE MAN TOBY NICHOLL HAS BEEN SHOOTING.

by Ayla Miller

I

t started out as a bit of fun around the farm with his father and morphed into a competitive sport. “My father used to shoot competitively before he and mum had children. I showed a bit of interest in shooting

ducks from a young age and when I was 14 I joined a gun club,” he says. Now Toby competitively shoots clay targets almost every weekend and has represented New Zealand at several world competitions in England

Clay target shooter Toby Nicholl says he is very competitive loves to win

and Australia throughout his shooting career and will soon travel to Ireland. His family are fourth generation sheep

and beef farmers on a 450-acre block in Te Miro just out of Cambridge and he has four siblings.

During the week he works as a quarry manager and lives in town with his partner Kelly and their 10-month old daughter, Imogen. On the weekends when he isn’t shooting he gets back to the farm to help out his father with general maintenance. “I don’t really like living in town so it is good to get back to the fresh air.” Toby travels a lot with his sport and says he is motivated, like any sportsperson, by winning. “I’m a fairly sporty kind of kid. I’m into my sport and I’m really competitive. Shooting is a sport where I can compete a lot without the training. If you row you have to do so much training before the tournament where as I’ve shot so many thousands of targets now.” He has competed for the New Zealand junior team in England in 2004 and won silver. He then captained the Junior under 21s to gold in Australia in 2006 and we had the world’s held here in New Zealand. “That was my first worlds as a senior which is for those over 21 and I ended up being 6th overall. I treat the smaller competitions as my practise. A little local club shoot is like my practise so I’m always competing.” His next goal is to make it to the top five clay target shooters in the world. When asked why he does it he says he enjoys representing the country. “That’s constant motivation.” Clay target shooters use a 12 gage under/over

shotgun and Toby believes shooting is something anyone can learn. “I’ve seen people come through that have never shot a gun in their life to maybe not national competition level but still to a point where they enjoy it. It is a fairly mental game. You have to be able to keep your mind in check. Anyone can do it. You can be 14 or 80 and still be able to shoot.” Last year his favourite time of the year, duck shooting season, was doubly exciting with the birth of his daughter Imogen on the Friday before opening week. “Opening weekend for the rest of my life will involve her birthday,” he laughs. Once she gets a bit older she will be able to come if she wants to.” He says anyone can get into shooting if they want to although it is a very expensive hobby. “Once you learn you never forget. It’s in my blood. Duck shooting is the most important time of the year for me and I will keep competing for as long as I feel that I want to which at this stage I would say is for the rest of my life. “I suppose you could say it’s an addiction. If you are committed to shooting, and you really like it, don’t give it up. “A lot of people get to their twenties and go travelling and have kids and get out of the sport because of money. I’ve shot right throughout my life so I’ve sort of reaped the rewards for that.”

Twelve years ago the idea came to him as he waited in line for hot donuts for half an hour at a carnival in Wellington. “It was there I figured if I was willing to stand in a queue for half an hour then it must be a good product,” said Keith. A few months later a donut cart came up for sale on Trademe so he bought it and Donut Express was born. They now have a depot in Auckland and Wellington and service all over the North Island. “We are a mobile operator and have our own super silent generator so we can set up anywhere and trade all day and night if we want to.” Keith says he and his team are open to suggestions and feedback to help them create the best donuts possible. In fact they actively encourage it. “In 2010 we upgraded our recipe to our current recipe. We parked outside a college and gave away free donuts in bag A and bag B until 60 per cent of the students said they liked bag A. “This year we have tweaked the recipe to make it even better. “We have lots of regular customers and people around our workshop who tell us that it is an improvement on our already amazing recipe. “We are looking to move from amazing to awesome — striving for the very best.”

They have also recently created a commercial gluten free donut recipe to share with New Zealand and these will be on offer at the National Agricultural Fieldays along with the chance to pick

up a free frisbee with every five bags of donuts purchased. Upload a photo of you and your friends enjoying Donut Express on their Facebook page and be in to win some tasty treats.

Measuring and analysing grain The IM 8800 by Perten of Sweden, is the next generation portable NIR instrument for protein, moisture and oil determination in grain and oilseed. An on-farm grain analyser has been desirable for some time. The demands on such an instrument are high and need to balance many requirements. It must be rugged, robust and portable to carry around the field. The equipment needs to be simple to operate yet sophisticated enough to provide accuracy similar to elevator and lab instruments and it must do this in a cost-effective manner. Recent technological advancements have allowed the development of just such an instrument. The Inframatic 8800

Attention Farmers

Problems with Iron and Manganese?

NZ Designed Rural Filtration Systems for the Removal of Iron and Manganese and Other Rural Problems

uses solid state components and diode array technology meaning no moving optical components. The instruments are accurate, repeatable, and reproducible. With uncompromising quality and build standards the instrument provides highly accurate data which can be relied on. Designed for farm conditions, this rugged meter is ideal for testing grain for moisture, protein and oil. An automated shutter protects the tester from light, insects and vermin to ensure reliable, low maintenance operation for years to come. The instrument has been designed with portability in mind to give users the freedom to measure grain in-field, at grain storage sites and at grain processing locations. It is equipped with a GPS which enables point specific sampling to generate protein maps onthe-go to make informed harvesting and binning decisions. The meter is light enough to hand carry and is powered by 12V to 24V, or battery up to two hours. The Inframatic 8800 goes with you where you need it most, in the pickup truck, in the cab of the header and to the silo. The standard carrying bag protects the IM 8800 and

is useful for transporting the instrument to inspection sites and fields. It is also useful for long-term, protective storage of the instrument after harvest. For more information contact FF Instrumentation on 03 962 2960 extension 804. The IM800 will be on display at the 2016 Fieldays visit stand PD7.

The Oov you’ve been looking for The experienced team at Advance Wellness Centre will be on-site at the New Zealand National Field Days to help people function fully and enjoy everyday life without the restriction of pain, and demonstrating the Oov, a new exercise accessory ergonomically designed to fit the human body. The Oov works by pushing the body to activate muscles and strengthening the core muscles, helping to rehabilitate back injuries and help with training. Oov NZ codirector, Denise Gardner, says the highly durable foam works in a way that is unique to other ab exercise equipment. “As it is an unstable base, it does things that other ab exercises don’t do. When you are doing usual ab exercises, you are flat on the floor, so you are using all of your stable muscles not your instability muscles. Just by lifting you off the floor and making you that little bit unstable you are working a whole different set of muscles and the inner core,” she says. “When you are using the Oov, you can’t cheat or you roll off.” Director John Appel of Advance Wellness Centre, began using the Oov with his clients and was pleased with the results. With his background in physiotherapy he believes the Oov is the best training device he has come across with regard to its success in transferring the benefits of its use to everyday life. “We are a Hamilton-based business helping New Zealanders change the way they use and understand their bodies, improving their physical health and wellness. To do that, we provide education on performance, movement and function to health and fitness

The team at Advance Wellness Centre will be on-site at the field days to give expert advice and introduce people to the Oov

professionals around New Zealand so that they can pass that information onto their clients. “We also want to get New Zealanders on the Oov so that they can begin their journey to wellness and performance as soon as possible.” The Oov can be used for back rehabilitation, to improve movement in joints, to work the inner abdominal muscles, to improve balance and stability, to build strength and endurance and more.

It can be used at home and certified health and fitness professionals can also use it to assess movement patterns in their clients, then use it as a correction or performance training device. It looks a little strange and even the man who invented the product didn’t know what to call it — so he called it Out Of Vocabulary. The team will be at site number LS 3 and there will be a physiotherapist available to give professional advice.

Kiwi kids love to play Childhood memories are the most precious gift you can give and the Kiwiplay brand lends a helping hand when it comes to creating memorable and fun times for children of all ages. The business specialises in kitset playgrounds made of beautiful cedar. Imported from the US, Kiwiplay’s partner has more than 22 years of experience in the manufacture and design of playground sets, so it’s fair to say they really know their stuff. Kiwiplay was set up in Waikato in 2013 to supply good quality cedar products to the New Zealand market. Since then it has sold kitset playgrounds to all parts of New Zealand and continues to grow and expand its range offered. Amy Cummins took over the business in 2014. “The product is built to last and designed to look great and be safe. It is an investment piece designed to be with children through their developmental years,” said Amy. “We love being directly involved in a business that has a healthy aspect

to it and promoting children’s outdoor activities and fun is a great project to get involved in. Especially in this day and age where children tend to spend so much time on electronics. “As an everyday mum of two boys and as a consumer myself, I believe it is imperative to offer top notch customer satisfaction. These are expensive items that you should only have to pay for once. Maintenance is minimal and it will then reward you with years of fun and healthy entertainment for the children.” The Kiwiplay range is instantly recognisable in homes and playgrounds across New Zealand. Made of quality cedar, there is a definite wow factor about the clever design. Depending on the model you choose, some even come with a club house upstairs or down.

There is an array of activities like belt swings, a trapeze swing, a slide and a climbing wall. Then add a rope ladder or monkey bars, a tube slide or a clatter bridge and finish off with a steering wheel and telescope on the main platform along with a noughts and crosses board. The larger models also come with their own timber roof with

Crafted by hand Woodpecker signs is a Kiwi owned and operated business and Brett Renall is the man behind each order. The 33-year-old is committed to delivering a quality service and product. “I am passionate about wood and use New Zealand macrocarpa for each sign. No job is too big or too small and each is personally made by hand. We treat our wood more like a piece of artwork. Each is unique and interesting,” said Brett. “I enjoy helping people make their sign a reality. From small signs for a man cave or the family bach, all the way through to large signs for a farm, station, business or that place you call home — we have it covered. Many of our signs are gracing subdivisions and commercial properties around the country.” Brett believes no property is complete until it has a name plaque at the front and the company have a sign drafting page on their website where clients can visualise what a sign might look like. “You choose the words, imagery and fonts. No matter what the purpose we can make one to your specific requirements. A personalised sign is the perfect way to distinguish your property. Handcrafted and finished with a light stain and careful oiling. A treat for yourself, a business or as a housewarming gift.” The company also make RAPID number signs. These are simple and effective and make a property less difficult to find, particularly for the emergency services.

29

“The most popular RAPID number signs have numbers running vertically on both sides and come complete with a metal bracket. All that is required are a few screws, a wooden pole to attach the sign to and your RAPID number is easily visible from both sides. Visible RAPID numbers have saved many lives over the years.” Woodpecker Signs are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, including natural wooden slabs and can include complex logo and image shapes, as well as text. The rough edge option retains the natural wavy edges of the tree, giving the sign a rustic flair. There is something available for everyone. “The slab signs look awesome mounted set back from your entranceway on a couple of deer posts with a few grasses planted underneath,” says Brett. “Each piece is very different and we carefully select the right piece for the right job. This is my dream job and I take pride in my work.” Brett will be at the National Fieldays with specials available. Drop in and say hello and mention this article. Signs are sent nationwide with free freight. Come and see their range at the National Fieldays by the Fire Station at site R75.

A revolution in timber fencing Virtually maintenance-free, WoodShield fencing posts and rails are perfectly suited to horse studs, training facilities, equestrian centres or the hobby farm. The coated timber posts are strong, safe and chemical free. The UV protected polyethylene is completely inert and the plastic coated post proves to be a superior performer in extreme climates. There is no sagging from heat or brittleness from cold. WoodShield posts will perform on your property for decades. The polymer technology also eliminates rotting, splintering, cracking, termite issues, the danger of wood breaks and in most cases cribbing or chewing. The posts are BioGro approved for use in any organic situation and other uses for the product include trellis, vineyards, kiwifruit, apple and pear orchards, fencing for dairy and beef farms, jump poles, playgrounds, park

Relocatable lifestyle buildings

Outpost Buildings is a family owned business which started in Timaru in 2005, and due to the expansion and success of the company they now have an office in Timaru along with their main office in Silverdale - Auckland. “We are a New Zealand owned and operated company. Our buildings are really strong and are made with high quality timber and Zincalume or Colorsteel cladding,” said Marketing manager Aimee Johnston. “Our products are designed specifically for the New Zealand market and have developed over time to meet the needs of our customers’ wide range of requests. Our buildings don’t just cater for horse lovers - there are buildings for chickens, calves, goats and other livestock, wood shelters and garden sheds as well. “Our prices are reasonable and our kitset products are often easier to get to your property. Outpost deliver freight free to transport depots nationwide where the client can collect it with relative ease with a trailer, or can arrange hiab truck delivery direct to your property, however this does cost extra. They can be built by the client themselves and people enjoy the achievement once completed. “As they are relocatable, you can build it at the back of your property and position it where you want. The buildings are easy to move around the paddock for livestock – just drag them with your 4x4 using the tow holes in the skid base

of the buildings. Quite often people with horses lease grazing so they can put the building on the leased land and if they move they can pick it up and move it on to the next block.” The range includes a variety of horse stables, livestock shelters, chicken coops, garden and wood sheds. “Outpost backyard shed designs are great for garden tools, kids toys and sport equipment. The Wood and Tool shed designs provide a combination of shelter for firewood with a lockable shed for your garden tools to one end. Timber slatted flooring and wall in the wood shed provides better ventilation to keep wood drier and the strong durable iron roofing keeps rain out. Sheds are available in a range of sizes with 15 to choose from. “The Upland Garden Sheds are our strongest design, built to last with a ‘tunnel’ style, weather deflecting shape and spacious clear span interior. They are easy to relocate as they are mounted on a strong skid base. They can be lifted by hiab truck or even dragged short distances for repositioning. They are great for rideon lawn mowers, motorbikes and other garden or workshop equipment.”

Aimee says some of their most popular horse shelters have tack sheds attached so you have a shelter with a shed next door - great for storing riding and grooming equipment as well as horse feed. “Choose the size and design that suits your requirements. Our wide range of shelters, stalls, stables and tackrooms will protect your horses from hot or cold weather and are also great for grooming and feeding.”

Kitsets come complete with high quality parts that are pre-cut and ready to assemble with step-by-step kitset instructions. “We will be at site S4 at the Fieldays at Mystery Creek where you can come and see the quality of the buildings on display. We are also sponsoring part of the Rural Bachelor of the Year competition and will be helping on the Thursday morning. This will be lots of fun.”

Lifting livestock health Farmers are increasingly realising the many positive effects that adding zeolite based products to stockfeed are having on their livestock health. Blue Pacific Minerals’ agricultural representative Kelvin Johansson, who manages the company’s agricultural health product line, says a growing number of farmers are tapping into the advantages these products offer. Blue Pacific Minerals has only recently started getting Optimate and Optiguard out in the marketplace but the feedback has already been hugely favourable. “Optimate is appealing to farmers for a whole host of reasons. The farmers using it — generally mixed in with stock feed — are reporting dramatic positive change. It certainly has a key role to play in terms of cows’ metabolic health,” Kelvin says. Optimate is a natural mineral with a strong liking for potassium and ammonium, Kelvin explains. When consumed, Optimate takes on the role of absorbing both potassium and ammonium from a cow’s rumin.

Therefore, the body does not have to deal with excess potassium and ammonium. It is that excess that causes a lot of metabolic issues. An increase in general animal health is seen as a key benefit of Optimate, he says, and this relates to not only ruminrelated issues. Farmers are also noticing a large reduction in problems such as milk fever and facial eczema. The Optiguard product line is specifically designed for calves. “It is good for their digestive systems, but the main advantage is it prevents loss of body fluid as it lessens the incidences of scouring,” Kelvin explains. He says the effect of Optimate/ Optiguard on the environment are also worth noting. “To start with they are natural products. Plus their absorption of ammonium leads to a reduction of nitrogen in

Optiguard can be added to calf-meal mix or placed directly into feed troughs to allow calves to self-manage their intake

cows’ urine, which is a good thing as nitrogen produced through urine results in leaching. A reduction in leaching is fantastic for the environment and also for the farmer. “Nitrogen taken from urine is instead transported through faeces and the end result is slow release fertiliser.” Kelvin, who has recently begun visiting farms to spread the word regarding the wonders of Optimate, says it is a very easy product to enthuse over. “It is completely natural and certified as

an organic input, it is cost effective, it has so many benefits in terms of animal health, and is also beneficial to the environment.” The Blue Pacific Minerals animal health range of products will be on site I25 at the National Fieldays. Optimate and Optiguard are available in 25-kilogram bags and 1,000-kilogram bulk bags. Place an order during Fieldays and be in to win a weekend getaway for two at the Copthorne Hotel in Auckland. LIVESTOCK BUSINESS PROFILE

Solving poultry problems

After years of frustration over losing chicken feed to sparrows, rats and mice, Bill Kirkham had a burst of Kiwi ingenuity and designed an automatic chicken feeder he called Grandpa’s Feeders. This ingenious yet simple product has been available in New Zealand since 1995 allowing poultry owners to leave their chickens for a couple of days and take a break without having to rely on family or neighbours. In doing so, the product also decreased the loss of feed to rats, mice, and wild birds which are not only taking the valuable feed, but also spread disease. Bill, a retired farmer, never meant for his invention to become a commercial enterprise but when he had perfected the prototype and tested it on a friend’s chicken run it soon became apparent there was a high demand for his invention. “Any one who has chickens at home and hasn’t got a good system for feeding and getting water to their chooks should come and see us at the National Field Days,” says business partner Alla Kirkham. With the amount of lifestyle block owners increasing all over the country, and a move away from buying battery farmed eggs, many people are keeping a few dozen hens in their backyards.

Lifestyle block owners often are holding down full-time jobs at the same time so anything that frees up time can be a huge advantage. There are also feeders suitable for chickens, bantams, ducks and even other animals such as cats, dogs and rabbits. The products have now been available for more than 20 years and have become standard equipment for any poultry owner even in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom. “We will have some new products there including a watering system which is a new design. The watering system works by having a couple of drinking cups with a tiny ball cock. As the chook drinks it pecks at the ball cock and releases a small amount of water. It is very good for people who don’t have a water supply at their chook run,” Alla says. “We will also hopefully have a chook door opener which is currently in its final stages of design and should be ready for the field days.” The team will be at site number D33 and will be ready to demonstrate their tried and true range of chicken-run accessories along with the latest designs.

Johne’s disease solutions available Help is at hand for dairy farmers facing a problem with Johne’s disease in their cattle. Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC) is reminding farmers of the options available from their herd improvement cooperative to help them manage the disease, including diagnostic testing and a comprehensive Johne’s disease management guide developed by experts. “We know Johne’s disease can be a stressful and frustrating challenge for many dairy farmers,” LIC GM Biological Systems Geoff Corbett said. “We want to make sure farmers know there are tools available that can help them manage the disease in their stock.” While there is no cure for Johne’s disease in cattle, taking advantage of testing services available and implementing a management plan can make all the difference to cow losses and the longer-term health of the herd, Corbett said. “We have been having a lot of success in New Zealand with this approach. LIC

has been screening more than 100,000 animals a year with our Johne’s disease diagnostic testing for a number of years. This supports farmers with a Johne’s disease problem to identify and remove problem cows with advancing infection that are shedding the bacteria and before they develop clinical disease.” A Johne’s disease management guide was developed by the consortium for farmers, with the latest and best advice on managing the disease. It is available from DairyNZ’s website and has also been distributed to many vets. The management guide includes information on how to recognise the disease, what causes it, how it is transmitted, which animals are most at risk and steps to take. “Removing them reduces the transmission to other animals. The objective of the testing and management regime is to break the transmission cycle and infection of young stock,” Corbett said.

Treating effluent efficiently

STREAMLINE

Kliptank have installed more than 300 dairy effluent storage tanks in New Zealand and are offering a whole treatment system. Neil Peterkin is the inventor of the Kliptank and is still very much involved as in-house technical expert and a company director. His engineering skills gained as a marine engineer and in the road transport industry are assisting the company to stay ahead of the game. “Effluent is a valuable fertiliser if treated right. Just storing effluent and spreading it on the pasture is not the answer,” said general manager Simone Gibson. “Here at Kliptank we have invented and patented the KlipJet Oxy Aerator Stirring System as a cost effective, safe, efficient way to stir, aerate and treat effluent prior to irrigating. The technology allows for aeration, entrainment and stirring from the one system. “The simple design is built from stainless steel and is tough and easily installed into a Kliptank, producing a healthy aerobic tank by stirring up the sludge blanket, breaking up the crust and introducing oxygen.” The results have been independently tested and show that KlipJets introduce oxygen at a higher level than traditional stirrers, therefore reducing odour from the tank and creating a homogenous slurry for irrigation. “Although it requires a pump, there are no moving parts inside the tank and we will work with you to use your existing

equipment wherever possible. Using KlipJets to aerate and stir effluent in a tank or pond will create a pre-treated slurry that is easy to irrigate and delivers the right balance of nutrients to ensure the pasture uptake is maximised. This saves cost on fertiliser and increases pasture growth.” The Bragg family at Papamoa are using the system on their farm and Ben says he is running it every second or third day for one to two hours. “I then irrigate and there are no blockages on the travelling irrigator at all. It spreads really well and runs smoothly.”

Kliptank also provide storage options for up to 3,000,000 litres and have accessories for drainage from the base of the tank allowing gravity feed back to the sump prior to irrigation as well as many inlet/outlet fitting options and tank level indicators. “We will be at the National Fieldays and will have both the Kliptank and Klipjet systems on display with Fieldays specials. “If you would want to hear about them prior to the Fieldays call me on 0800 255 222,” says Simone. The Kliptank and KlipJet team will be in the Pavilion at site PB1.

Discover the Chatham Islands The Chatham Islands, New Zealand’s most easterly region, is a somewhat mysterious environment with a varied terrain. An archipelago of 11 islands, only Pitt and Chatham are inhabited by about 600 people and the rest are home to a variety of seabirds including the Royal, Antipodean Wandering Albatross and Chatham Islands Mollymawk. The islands comprises of a bewildering world of contrast with a varied terrain of long white sandy beaches, rugged rocky coastlines, majestic cliffs, clear blue waters, volcanic peaks, shallow lagoons, native wetlands and untouched dense native bush. There is an abundance of wildlife on land and sea, including the commonly seen weka and the islands have many native and bird species endemic to them. The Department of Conservation in partnership with the landowners have played a significant part in the management and restoration of the native bush and its wildlife.

The last major Pacific Islands to be settled, the Chatham Islands are thought to have been first occupied by Polynesians about 800 to 1000 years ago. In isolation they developed a unique culture and became a people who call themselves Moriori. They named this island home ‘Rekohu’. The Chatham Islands were discovered by Europeans in 1791 by the English ship HMS Chatham. European settlement dates from the early 1800s with sealers, whalers and farmers. Later Ngati Tama and Ngati Mutunga arrived, and made their home on these islands — they called ‘Wharekauri.’ Merging their heritage and living together on this remote outpost; these people are the Chatham Islanders also known to be very real, welcoming and friendly. A mobility solution Have you found your wheelchair or mobility stops you from accessing difficult terrain? Do you want to go along the beach, the bush or across farm paddock and found it difficult? Our company Kemcare Limited has a solution. It is a six-wheel drive outdoor electric wheelchair, called the 6x6 Explorer which is very powerful and waterproof. That is not to say that you can drive it through a river, although it can go through puddles, wet sand and grass as well as mud without any detrimental effect to the aluminium and stainless steel chassis and bodywork. Weighing in at 230 kilograms, plus the driver, the 6x6 explorer has a low center of gravity, backed by twin high torque electric motors, which make it very stable and versatile for around the farm, lifestyle block, getting through the bush or onto and along the beach. The top speed is walking pace, and it’s low gearing is likened to putting a 4x4 vehicle into low range. This means that the Explorer will crawl it’s way through, and over, most rough terrain. For the more adventurous there is the 2,500 pound winch. This is able to be fitted to both the front and rear of the chair and can then be used by a companion to hook the winch cable to something secure. Sitting in the 6x6 Explorer, the first thing you notice is how comfortable the auto sport seat is.

It feels like an armchair on wheels. With fold-up padded armrests and a low front foot rest area, the chair is deliberately set up to be easy for a user to get into from a wheelchair, and once seated, the driver can be securely belted in with the four point safety harness. Each Explorer is made specifically for an individual owner and is set up

expensive engineering consent work,” says director Anton Meier. “It is like two hours of child’s play in the sand pit to install the 500,000-litre tank and a job that can be done by any farmer and they can save themselves a lot of money compared to other forms of effluent storage.” The systems are cost effective, simple to self-install and ideal for problem soil types with high water tables and peat. For extra storage requirements, a second tank can be added to the system by simply placing another tank beside an existing one. “Farmers haven’t got a lot of money at the moment and they can add more as needed.” The totally enclosed tanks shed the rain and no expensive security and recovery systems are needed. There are no smells and simply look clean and tidy. This latest advancement in dairy effluent management can be viewed by appointment. Beware of lights at night Strange lights could be seen on dairy farms at night as the hunt for pest birds goes high-tech and those searching for their roosting places do so at dusk into the evening. A group of Indian ringneck parakeets, have set up home in the Waikato, around Hikutaia near Paeroa. MPI has teamed up with the Department of Conservation and the Waikato Regional Council to capture them. “Once we know where the birds are gathering in the evening, we can catch them with nets and remove them from the wild,” said response manager Brad Chandler. Field teams have set out to catch a small number of the birds and fit Indian ringneck parakeets can be green or yellow, grey or blue radio-transmitters. “Once the birds have the tiny They are 40 centimetres from head transmitters fitted, there will be vehicles driving slowly in the area with telemetry to the tip of their tail. WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES May 2016 BUSINESS PROFILE

Living life full throttle

Retirement isn’t on the horizon for Gary Wilson as he enjoys challenges in both his business and sporting life. At the sprightly age of 67, Gary is the oldest person racing in the Honda Cup Racing Series, driving an 1800cc Honda Civic. “Most of the guys I race against are between 25-45 years younger than me and last year I carried No 1 as I won the series outright,” said Gary. “Not bad for a pensioner. It was a dream come true as I thought I had left my run too late.” Gary has been involved competitively with sport all his life including athletics, motorcycling and speedway and has always been one to grab life by the horns, or in this case the steering wheel. “I believe in living life to the full as I lost my mother when I was 15, and our son had a bad accident at 23, so I know how easily things can be taken away and how fragile life can be.” If you play hard, you must work hard, is the approach that Gary takes in both his personal and business life. He has been involved in maintenance in the local pulp and paper mills for 20 years when he and his wife Glennis started their engineering company Wilco (2003) Ltd. At the time they were rearing considerable numbers of calves

on their block at Onepu and identified the need for hay feeders and meal feeders that were efficient, easy to use and cost effective. This has led to the development of the range of feeders that Wilco Engineering produce today along with many other products. The criteria Wilco work to is, the product must be practical and long lasting, while minimising wastage and providing time and money saving. “To put this feed saving in perspective if you pay $10 for a bale of hay this could end up being $20 per bale if your livestock only eat half and the rest gets trampled in the mud. I could spend the savings on a race tyre,” says Gar y. “The versatility of our products means they are well used not only by large dairy and beef farmers but also small block farmers for sheep, alpacas and horses. “V isit our website www. wilcoengineering to see the range of products we produce today and if you are visiting the National Fieldays you will find us at SITE F13 (opposite Kawasaki). “Race season has just finished so it’s back to work, but I aim to be on the start-line in October” says Gary.

Former rural bachelor finds lasting love

by Rose Stirling

Former rural bachelor of the year title holder credits competition for helping him find true love. Jeff Peek, Waikato dairy farmer and Morrinsville native, and 2014 rural bachelor of the year title holder, recently got engaged to farming lass, Jasmine Bloxham. Mr Peek believes that taking part in the competition played a part in helping him find love. “I reckon it made me stand out from the rest of the pack — she might disagree.” His partner Bloxham, formerly a farm assistant from Otorohanga decided the distance between them was too

much, so they joined forces last year and are now contract milking together in Pirongia, south of Hamilton. “We work pretty good together as a team — there’s always so many things going on. But we seem to get on with it, bash it out and carry on. There aren’t many times when we’ve had to go opposite ends of the paddock,” says Jeff. Peek who beat seven finalists from New Zealand and Australia for the title, says the competition was a lot of fun. “It was a well-run event and to hang out

with a bunch of like minded guys was great. To go through it all with a group was cool. One of the biggest things I take away from it is that I can remember walking on the stage at prize-giving — and just the crowd and the cheer — it’s the kind of stuff that makes the hairs on the back of your neck still stand up.” Jeff encourages others to take part, “Don’t hold back, have a crack at it, it’s a load of fun, plenty of competition, and throw yourself into the competition. For anyone lucky enough to be selected, just be yourself, it all comes down to that.“ His partner is pretty impressed with her hubby but didn’t want to say much. When asked what she thought of his rural bachelor title she burst into a fit

of giggles. “Laughter — that probably sums it up — just laughter.“ The giggly duo plan to get married at the end of the year but didn’t want to give away too much about their wedding plans just yet. “December this year — there will be plenty of family and friends and just a good old party.” This year’s Fieldays has announced that eight finalists will compete in the Rural Bachelor of the Year. Two Australian and six Kiwi bachelors will battle it out as they compete to win the coveted Golden Gumboot. From Wednesday to Friday there will be four challenges a day, with a winner announced at the official prize giving on the Village Green on Saturday at 12pm.

Launch of virtual health service The Waikato DHB has launched a new service that allows patients talk to their hospital doctor over their smart phone from home rather than travelling to an outpatient appointment. The Virtual DHB, powered by HealthTap, also has a wealth of health information available on an app, all approved by doctors. It means people can check out symptoms, conditions and treatments and get health information on their smart phone, tablet or desktop computer. The free app puts your health in your hands and links you to informative resources and websites. Patients are able to book an appointment with their specialist, send them a direct text message, and view their health record and you own your clinical record. It is secure, private and convenient to use. More than 60 per cent of people in the Waikato DHB district, live in rural locations and many patients travel long distances for a short consultation. Offering patients the option of a virtual visit via video or text will help to give everyone access to the DHB’s services no matter who they are or where they live. Virtual health is about putting the patient at the centre of their healthcare. It is enabling healthy communities by empowering patients to manage their own health, giving patients a say in when and where their healthcare is delivered, improving access to timely care for everyone no matter who they are or where they live and it delivers services closer to home to make it more

convenient for patients. It is one of the key initiatives we are delivering under virtual health. Using technology to allow health professionals and their colleagues the ability to link up with patients over a smart device or home computer wherever they are, creating a patientcentred clinical record that the whole care team can access and is integrated

with our Clinical Workstation and GPs’ patient management systems. HealthTap is a global mobile health company and we have partnered with them for a two year trial. It is the current provider of the platform that we are using to deliver the Virtual DHB and the name of the app that patients and clinicians download and register with.

You can sign up to the service from June 1 by taking photo identification along to the enquiry desk at Waikato Hospital or to the DHB’s other hospitals at Thames, Te Kuiti, Tokoroa or Taumarunui. To be eligible, people need to be over the age of 18 and be covered by the Waikato District Health Board services.

New hope for long-term back pain sufferers

After over eight years in New Zealand, Inversion Therapy has now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain. After over eight years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. "To me surgery was never an option" he said" as long as I still could walk, there was hope" Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. "The first time I tried it the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that" he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, "as specialists had told me it was irreversible", "I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief". To Dave's surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, "I couldn't believe it" he told me "I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time" It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand

and Inversion NZ was born.

Come along to either the Helensville Back Pain Expo at the War Memorial Hall, 49 Commercial Rd, Helensville; Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th May – 10am till 4pm OR the Hutchwilco Boat Show at the ASB Showgrounds, Greenlane, stand 512 – 12th to 15th May 2016

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more. "We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children" he told me, "the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent". What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the heath of the brain as we all get older.

TESTIMONIAL DEAR DAVE AND NANCY In 2008 I had been living with serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two; I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back.

Dave and his son Tyler will be attending the show; Tyler (17) had been around the shows since he was 8 and has seen for himself the amazing transformations the table has given people. " Tyler loves doing the shows and has picked up a great understanding of how the Teeter works, it's a pleasure working with him". Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, "I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain" that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves" he told me "most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less" he said "we let the tables do the talking".

Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been inverting for seven years and has found it keeps him young

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER INVERSION TABLE WORKS. The Teeter Inversion Table works on three levels: Discs, Muscles and Posture. Discs: It uses Gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, rehydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, the rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to dehydrate. Dehydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the dehydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots a lot more effectively and returns quality of life. Muscles: A lot of Pain is Muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscle so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. A reverse stretch opens up the muscles and there is a treatment on the table, which is called Rhythmic traction, which is a gentle rocking motion. This stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

LOCAL SHOWS

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory as it constantly pulls the muscles to where they want to be. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and slowly come back into alignment, using the table daily, at least once a day, does not allow the memory to pull the muscles out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to slowly come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is not rocket science, it is just pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself resulting in a far healthier life.

IF YOU SUFFER FROM BACK OR NECK PAIN THEN COME ALONG TO

Posture: Poor posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; much in the same way as the misalignment of your wheels on your car, they eventually wear away the wheel bearings.

In 2006, a three and a half year medical study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was completed in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at Newcastle General Hospital. It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment. We will set the table to the relaxing angle of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the pressure on your spine and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

The future of effluent management Two recognised and respected brands in the dairy industry have just united for a joint approach on what is being termed ‘super smart’ effluent monitoring and control. Tag I.T with their Halo brand have entered an exclusive supply agreement with Reid and Harrison’s Yardmaster brand to supply an effluent management solution tailor-made for customer needs. In December 2015, Reid and Harrison ran a workshop with eight customers through the New Zealand Trade Enterprises Better by Design initiative to discover the key effluent issues dairy farmers faced. The farmers were concerned about guesswork in effluent control and the amount of management time compliance was taking as well as a need for better real-time visibility of their effluent system. As a result Reid and Harrison conducted research on the state of technology in the marketplace and realised Tag I.T was already in the effluent control business with their Halo product range. Halo was covering monitoring of effluent, as well as water, milk and weather monitoring on one dashboard to cover most of the farm

needs on one display. The use of ‘cloud’ based technology gave the portable visibility as well as cost effective control of the technology. What was missing was the IT based technology to run the pump at different flows and duties all controlled from a phone, tablet, computer or the physical on-site unit itself as well as monitoring and recording. A joint development project was launched between the two companies with one of the original customers from the December workshop selected for the prototype unit. “We are extremely excited that we have a customer-driven solution that really gives control back to the person who needs it the most — the farm owner/ manager” says Reid and Harrison CEO, Keith Cooke. “Tag I.T has a similar culture to our company making the joint project a real collaboration.” At the field days the Yardmaster Halo product will be unveiled and will be sold via the Yardmaster nationwide dealer network.

Style and reliability

Ebbett Volkswagen believe the Volkswagen Amarok continues to be the most stylish workhorse of the utility vehicle market and is ideal for farmers of all types.

The Amarok features 20,000-kilometre service intervals and is the only doublecab ute able to carry a pallet between the rear wheel arches. Recently, Liam Messam became an ambassador for Ebbett Volkswagen and, as an introduction to the capabilities of the Amarok, he was taken on an offroading experience at Karapiro. He put the ute through its paces, hurtling across streams and powering up steep inclines. Liam then ordered his dream Amarok from the team at Ebbett Volkswagen, a fully kitted out beast that he’s looking forward to driving on his rare days off. Rally driver, Sebastien Ogier won the 2016 World Rally Champs in a Volkswagen that features similar 4WD technology to the Amarok, arguably making it the world’s best four-wheeldrive system. “We are convinced the Volkswagen Amarok range is the most comfortable, fuel efficient and capable off-road vehicle for farmers. It is 100 per cent reliable on the farm and doubles as a family wagon,” said dealership principal Richard van den Engel. “We have been selling cars since 1928 and farmers represent half of our customer database. They are the

backbone of our business. We know them and enjoy working with them. We believe our down to earth and approachable style means our company is easy to deal with. “The Volkswagen range is one of the broadest in the world — VW means the people’s car. For farmers you couldn’t ask for a better fit for reliability and quality.” In 2017, an updated Amarok will hit the market with a powerful

3.0-litre 165kW V6 TDI engine, a new cockpit and more safety features such as post-collision braking. Transmission options include a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. Stock will be limited in New Zealand. Register your interest at V6Amarok@ ebbett.co.nz or visit Ebbett Prestige at the National Fieldays at site E92–I30, on the corner of E-street and I-road.

Quality at your fingertips

When it comes to moving things from A to B, Compass Trailers can offer you peace of mind, no matter what you’re shifting or where you are shifting it to. Thirty-five years ago the company started in Northland as Compass Engineering and now focus on building high quality trailers for commercial and domestic use with manufacturing workshops in Northland, Cambridge and sub-contracting in Canterbury. As a proudly New Zealand owned and operated company, they are the only nationwide and locally manufactured trailer company in the country. General manager Andrew Foster will be attending the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays this year with four other staff members and bringing with him around 50 or more trailers. “We pride ourselves on building top quality New Zealand products which offer our customers complete confidence. Our products last the distance,” he says. “It is important to use good quality materials which are locally sourced. We don’t cut corners, and we offer value for money and lifetime investments. “Being a New Zealand company means peace of mind for the customer as parts can be easily sourced and we offer accountability.” Andrew enjoys the challenge that comes with growing the business throughout the country.

BATTERY ADDITIVE

ADVERTORIAL

Prevention is better than a cure After 18 years on the market in New Zealand and 13 years in Australia, Gerard Anselmi of Recharge the Battery Additive, says the message is getting through — prevention is better than a cure when it comes to batteries. “The big issue is — every battery you buy is sulphated. Treat batteries early with Recharge, repeat the process every two years and keep batteries charged by backing up with a mains powered charge every six months or so. Most batteries will go a long time — 10 years or more. Yes you will get some failing batteries back but not all, so worth a go at $4 or $5 per car battery,” he says. Gerard and his wife Debbie attend shows about every week in New Zealand and Australia where they meet Recharge customers with batteries that are 10, 12 and 14-years-old and often still going. “I had a farmer at the Southland Field Days in Waimumu in February who told me he’d been using Recharge for years. When he took the battery that had just died, out of his tractor — it was 17-years-old. “Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphation buildup on internal lead plates, corroding the lead plates and compromising the battery’s holding capacity.” According to Gerard most batteries are ready sulphated when purchased so treating them early and keeping them charged will prevent premature

battery failure with the simple Recharge Battery Conditioning Program. The pair will be at New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays again this year on their usual site — K-25 — doing special deals, talking battery maintenance and how to average over 10 years out of your farm batteries. Recharge is available from Farmlands. The 500ml farmer pack works out at $4.50 per car battery or $8.50 to treat an N-70zz light commercial battery. A more cost effective twolitre commercial pack is also available and can also be purchased on line at www.recharge.net.nz or on TradeMe. The two-litre pack treats 42 x N-70 batteries or 22 x N-150 truck batteries or about five sets of electric golf cart batteries — about $8,000 worth of batteries treated for $340 delivered or $280 at the field days. Treating sealed batteries is as simple as drilling into each

Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem, A car battery can be treated for around $5. Yes you can treat sealed batteries, simply drill into each cell, top up with water, treat, charge and reseal with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung. See us at the Fieldays® site K-25

Trailers of quality

John Grierson and his team at Prescott Trailers believe quality is the key to a good trailer and their product needs to last. They have 48 years of experience designing and building trailers for the New Zealand market and are one of New Zealand’s 100 per cent owned and operated leading trailer manufacturers. In ever y aspect they have designed and built their trailers to exacting and demanding safety and engineering specifications. They have a range of car, commercial, farm, flat deck and boat trailers as well as stock and rubbish crates, and a wide range of accessories including disc brakes, jockey wheels and rims are available. The heavy duty commercial trailer is designed for the professional tradesman or contractor who needs an extremely strong, dependable and durable product that can take the knocks and abuse of day to day use. These heavy duty trailers come in both single and tandem axle and range in load capacity from 1,000 kilogram and up to 3,500 kilograms. The tandem axle range of heavy duty

John Grierson director of Prescott Trailers with one of the designs available

trailers are well balanced and have excellent tow-ability. These trailers have oscillating suspension and are designed for carrying a larger capacity load, and if fitted with our optional high side crate, will ideally handle loads with large bulk. Prescott boat and kayak trailers are designed to suit everything from a sea kayak, tinny, waka, fibre glass and alloy boats up to nine metres in length. They can custom-build to suit your boat and specialise in repairing, rebuilding, reconditioning, regalvanising old boat trailers — depending on their condition. Flatdeck trailers are manufactured to suit individual requirements. With a flatdeck the wheels are under the deck

to give you easy access to the deck area. This is good for loading items such as timber, pallets or fruit bins on with forklifts — loading and unloading by hand without bending your back over mudguards, or transporting machines that have a wide-wheel track. For custom-built trailers, whether you have just rough ideas or an accurate drawing, Prescott can help realise your concept to the final quality product. Your new trailer will be built to fit your individual requirements and wear the Prescott badge of quality and craftsmanship. For more information they will be at site D82 at the National Fieldays. New board member for trust

55

NZ Landcare Trust’s board of trustees will see a new face at the table, as Fiona Gower replaces Liz Evans as the representative for Rural Women New Zealand. “Fiona’s extensive knowledge of rural issues and her understanding of community involvement will be a real asset,” said NZ Landcare Trust CEO, Dr Nick Edgar. Mrs Gower says she is looking forward to the new role. “With the growing importance, emphasis and pressure on freshwater in New Zealand, organisations such as NZ Landcare Trust will play an increasingly important role in achieving positive outcomes for our land and water resources, and I am looking forward to being a part of that journey,” said Mrs Gower. She is currently the vice president and national councillor for the top of the North Island with Rural Women New Zealand and has served on their National Council since 2013. Mrs Gower is a graduate of the AgriWomen’s Development Trust Escalator

programme, was a Kellogg’s rural leadership scholar in 2009, and also holds a diploma in wool technology from Lincoln. Currently living on a farm at Port Waikato, she works as a casual farm worker when not fulfilling her community commitments and looking after her school aged children. Former Rural Women New Zealand representative Liz Evans has been an involved and proactive member of the board. Dr Edgar said he would like to thank Liz for her considerable contribution during her tenure. “Liz took an active interest in the Trust’s activities and was very supportive of our practical ‘grass roots’ approach to sustainable land and water management.” NZ Landcare Trust works with farmers, landowners and community groups to improve the sustainability

of our landscapes and waterways. Sustainable land management is achieved through community involvement. They achieve this by building relationships based on trust and mutual respect. Their Regional and Project coordinators work closely with farmers and rural communities, helping with ‘hands on’ work such as weed clearance and native planting. Events such as field days and workshops are a great way of getting people together to Fiona Gower, NZ Landcare Trust’s new board member` share information. In many cases members of the ANZ SURPLUS TRUCKS scientific community will present the NZ Wide Service latest research and answer questions.
