Kokako are hoped to be re-established in Pirongia Forest Park

Now officially at risk, a project aimed at restoring North Island kokako to the Pirongia Forest Park is being backed by a $110,000 grant from Waikato Regional Council. The successful natural heritage fund application will help with the transfer of 40 ‘founder’ birds from Pureora Forest and Tiritiri Matangi Island in the Hauraki Gulf to Pirongia. The grant has been received by the Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society, a community organisation which has a range of projects underway in the park aimed at boosting natural biodiversity. Now birds, including some with ‘Pirongia genes’, are being brought back in the hope that kokako will re-establish themselves, with the support of existing pest control programmes being carried out in the park. The transfer of the birds is scheduled to be carried out over three years in conjunction with the Department of Conservation’s kokako specialist

group. DoC has also provided significant funding in the lead-up to the project. The end goal is the establishment of a large self-sustaining, genetically diverse group of more than 500 North Island kokako in the park. Iwi and public support for the project is very high and a report to the WRC finance committee said that ‘a successful translocation will provide an opportunity for the regional community and the 35,000 visitors to Pirongia Forest Park each year to encounter kokako in their natural environment’. The total cost of the project is expected to be just over $820,000 over a four-year period and council staff felt a grant towards the first year’s costs was appropriate as it would allow the society to see how the birds settle and to work to secure sources of funding for the next phases of the project. The $110,000 grant is subject to completion of a satisfactory funding deed.

Inventions are the stuff of Mystery Creek. “Supporting innovation is vital to the future of agriculture in New Zealand,” said Fieldays Innovations event manager Gail Hendricks. Awards are given across multiple categories and winners will receive thousands of dollars in business support and advice to help get their innovations to market. “The Innovations Centre is probably the busiest space at Fieldays and always attracts a lot of attention,” said Hendricks. “Every year, there is always broad media interest and the television breakfast shows broadcast from the Innovations Centre during Fieldays. The place is just buzzing.” During Fieldays the Innovations Lab, which is located inside the Innovations Centre, will be set up as a dedicated

“To excel and grow in the future, innovation and change is vital,” says Fieldays Society CEO Peter Nation. “It is an exciting and challenging time for the industry, but with good leadership we have great opportunities.” Mr Nation said the event led the way as a place where businesses and individuals come for the latest in agricultural innovations and technology. Leading change supports the Fieldays pillars of education, internationalisation and innovation, which are represented at the event with the Innovations Centre, the Careers and Education Hub and the Business International Centre. Last year the event generated $430 million in sales revenue for New Zealand firms. There were 1,507 exhibitor sites and 130,684 people through the gates during the four-day event. Signature events will be back this year, with inventions, entertainment, competitions and trade exhibits. Eight finalists will tackle a series of challenges relating to farm life, from fencing and log splitting, to dog handling and physical fitness. The winner will walk away with a prize pool of more than $20,000 and the pride of winning the coveted Golden Gumboot. There have been 28 sculptural artworks selected as finalists for the 2017 Fieldays No 8 Wire National Art Award that prove the imagination and creativity of Kiwi artists and DIYers. The overall winner will receive $7,000, second and third place-

A SEAWEED SUCCESS BY ANN MORGAN Brewing quality seaweed products since 1996 AgriSea NZ Ltd is a multi-award winning sustainable New Zealand company, family owned and operated. The company produces seaweed soil, foliar, pasture and animal health concentrates for agriculture, horticulture and apiculture.

A

grisea directors Jill Bradley and her husband Keith Atwood had a life changing experience in the 1990s when they discovered the value of seaweed one hot, wet, fungal summer. “We were visiting organic farms across the country during the holidays and most were having problems with issues such as botrytis in strawberries and facial eczema on cattle but one farm was not having trouble,” said Jill. This property was exceptional with no health problems with soil, plants, pasture or animals and their major farm input was seaweed. Personally

committed to investigating the value of seaweed, Jill and Keith started researching and brewing seaweed soil and foliar products and in time AgriSea was born. “We researched seaweed internationally to discover who uses it, what it is good for and how it was used. The brown variety was the one widely used in agriculture and horticulture.” The couple trialled different New Zealand brown seaweed species until they identified the premium one to use. “Keith brewed and I grew — only then did we begin to learn the real value of seaweed,” says Jill. “Seaweed contains

minerals, vitamins, growth promotants, trace elements and amino acids — it is a nutrient ‘feast’, a smorgasbord for soil biology, plant and animal health.” Jill and Keith had eight Golden Queen peach trees on their property that had leaf curl and brown rot so severe that not one peach was edible.

They treated them with seaweed and by season two the disease had halved and in season three they had eight healthy trees with wonderful crops. Jill says the ‘secret’ to seaweed was and still is simply — high nutrition. AgriSea produced liquid seaweed concentrates for soil, foliar/pasture and

animal health initially but developed new products such as seaweed salt blocks, seaweed pellets, bee nutrition, and a powdered form of seaweed in response to market demand. AgriSea have a reputation for listening to farmers’ needs and is used across a vast range of horticulture and agriculture sectors including kiwifruit and avocado growers, orchardists, vineyard owners, dairy, and sheep and beef farmers. The animal health nutrition contains a complex range of bio-available minerals and nutrients that support and maintain animal health. Research has been an important focus for AgriSea and the company is now managed by Tane Bradley, who continues to extend development and research for new products. The bee industry is a fast growing new sector for AgriSea and the bee products are proving highly successful. Tane has initiated research to support New Zealand beekeepers. He also recently collaborated with Blue Pacific Minerals to develop new products which help with water holding and nutrient efficiency. Combining AgriSea’s Seaweed nutrient with Blue Pacific Mineral’s Zeolite has exceeded initial expectations. Zeolite, a hydrated form of silica has been combined with their liquid seaweed concentrates creating three new products Animal +; Soil +; and Combo +. “Soil + is a slow release and feeds the biology in the ground on a constant basis and people are seeing great results on their farms and in their gardens,” said

Keith. “The water gets into the Zeolite and releases the seaweed nutrient into the ground in small amounts feeding the soil biology. Soil + is now replacing some of the urea on farms as the benefits are so valuable — this helps with water retention and aids N run off.” Combo + has the soil and pasture liquid loaded onto it and feeds the good bacteria and the fungal element at the same time. “Animal + is a fine powder which is included in the animals’ feed and they

love the supplement. It releases slowly in their gut which is like a second brain and if the gut is healthy the animal is healthy,” says Keith. “Animal + helps ensure the animals get all the goodness from their feed. It is all connected to their nutrition — if they don’t have their good gut bacteria flourishing they can’t absorb the nutrient in the food they are eating. The seaweed feeds the good bacteria and keeps the gut working properly. If the animal has healthy rumin they can gain weight easier and their overall health benefits.”

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

by Ann Morgan Cecile Valadier arrived in New Zealand in early December from Marvejols — a small town in the mountains in the province of Lozere, in the south of France. She came to New Zealand with one ambition — to learn how to farm sheep the Kiwi way.

T

Cecile wants to take as much knowledge as possible back to her home country to help develop the farming industry. “I worked for two months on a farm with 2,000 Romney ewes in Waikari. I already had experience drenching and shifting mobs so the farmer let me get more involved with what he was doing. “I learnt so much from him, it is good to experience the different ways of farming.” She says they do not have many Romneys in France and they use a lot of wheat and barley for feed because crops like rape and kale are expensive.

he 24 year old’s grandparents were small dairy farmers and she spent a lot of time on their farm during her childhood. “I have always loved animals. My grandparents had 30 cows, it was nothing like the dairy farms here in New Zealand,” says Cecile. “I told my mum I want to be a farmer and I developed an interest in sheep and travelled to Ireland to learn more as it is another sheep country, but I believe New Zealand is the best country in the world to learn about sheep and how you can produce lambs with lower production costs.”

“Summers are very dry in some areas so there isn’t enough grass to finish the lambes. Not many people use these crops but I have noticed there is a big difference in lamb growth. “I spent time in Balclutha on a property with 1,800 Romney’s, 50 dairy goats and 30 cattle. The first farm the land was flat and easy but this one had steep land and I learnt how dangerous farming can be and now I know why Kiwi’s use Huntaways. We only have heading dogs in France. “I helped milk the goats and the milk was used to feed the calves. Once they wean the calves they buy a pig or two and feed the pigs the milk.” Cecile also attended the shearing world champs in Invercargill to learn more. “I was keen to learn about wool handling and managed to get work with Dion Morrell, the shearing contractor in Alexandra. “It was an amazing experience to see the teams work together and I do a few months with Merinos in June with Dion. “I have done mostly crutching and second shearing and I am looking forward to working with full wool and Merinos which are different to other breeds.” Cecile says they don’t have rousies in France and she wants to show others how to rousie. “I don’t think we get paid enough for the wool because the quality

isn’t very good on some breeds. The price often doesn’t cover the shearer and because the country is dry there may not be so many dags so we don’t have rousies because most farmers don’t crutch the sheep. “I did an internship on a demonstration farm in France and they were shearing twice a year and all the wool went in the bale as is. It was amazing to see the atmosphere of the shearing shed here.” On a majority of farms there are no shearing sheds, they just shear on the ground on a square piece of wood most of the time. “A few farmers have started to build sheds but they are nothing like the kiwi sheds. They just have one or two stands. “I will go back to the first farm I was at for lambing and head back to the North Island in September to a 770 hectare farm with 3,000 dairy sheep. The company promote the dairy sheep industry and I will do the lambing and milking. “In France a big farm is 500–600 ewes and I am excited to take home knowledge and experience. I want to take back grazing management information and all the things I have learnt about wool and how to improve it. “We will have the shearing world champs in France in 2019 and I think we have a lot of work to do on our wool industry and having extra knowledge is a good thing.”

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

WILDLIFE THROUGH THE LENS

BY ANN MORGAN OPENING THE FARM GATE IS A PRIVILEGE MANY DO NOT UNDERSTAND, BUT PHOTOGRAPHER TONY FLUERTY UNDERSTANDS THIS VERY WELL.

“I

am from Upper Hutt and spent much of my early years roaming around the Te Urewera National Park and the Tararua Ranges as a hunter and fur trapper,” says Tony. “I grew up in the 70s and saw lots of things in the bush but never had photos to back up my stories and people wouldn’t believe me. Then I realised it was hard to rely on memories and many of my hunting mates had cameras to record their experiences. “I have always been fascinated by the beauty of nature and in my late thirties I began photographing what I saw on my hunting trips and it meant I could share what I had experienced. I love the wilderness and coasts, the stunning rata

and majestic rimu trees, rugged peaks and playful antics of undisturbed deer to the comical behavior of seals, but the elaborate dances and the incredible colours of birds always hit the right spot for me.” Years ago Tony had five dogs he trained for field trials and got into duck shooting and upland game became an obsession. He travelled all over the country with his setters and German shorthairs. “I really liked the challenge of training my dogs and shooting birds when they were flying. It takes a lot more skill than with a deer that is standing there unaware of your presence. Then I wondered what it would be like taking

photos of birds flying and the passion grew from there.” Tony says it is a lot harder than shooting with a shotgun and there are many components that have to come together to get a decent photo. You have to have light and lots of it and the right technique or you are destined for disappointment. “It is important to get permission to cross someone’s land and it is a privilege to be able to take images of wildlife whilst they are going about their daily life. “We encourage farmers to preserve the wetlands. A good balance of wildlife enriches your life, and children can learn a lot from watching animals and birds interact with each other and survive. “I think one of the most important things for farmers to do is have pest control of rats, cats and stoats. These animals eat the birds and their eggs, especially waterfowl and swamp birds. “Bird varieties in New Zealand are amazing and many farmers don’t realise what they have on their land, like the spotless crake, which is a bird with very similar colours and shape to a pukeko but grows to the size of a blackbird, and the marsh crake. They are only the size of a sparrow and live in swamps. “They are native and we have found them on nearly every substantial swamp from Wellington to Foxton. Most people have no idea that they even exist let alone on their land.” Tony believes birds need protecting. “Birds help keep waterways open and insect numbers down. If you look around you will see amazing things on your

farm. Even pukeko’s help to keep drains open by eating grass around waterways. “Bitterns in particular are now almost critical, some get shot during the shooting season, this practice has got to stop — they are struggling as it is without becoming some bored duck shooters’ target practise.” Tony presents his photos of black kites, owls and fairy terns, to name a few, under his business name ‘Boney Whitefoot’. “One day I came out of the bush to my friend Steve and I took my shoe off to check a blister. A lady said ‘what ugly boney white feet’ and that is how the name ‘Boney Whitefoot’ came about.” Tony has photographed the Koekoea (long tailed cuckoo) in the Pureora Forest

Park and says these birds migrate each summer to lay eggs in the Whitehead nests, a bird about the size of a sparrow. “Then they and the chicks fly back the Pacific Islands during our winter. The shining cuckoo lay in grey warbler nests, and fly off leaving the grey warbler to babysit. They roam around the countryside, never settling in one spot. Cuckoo’s are attacked by other birds because they are known for their tricks. “Photography is a good, productive hobby and appreciation for the wildlife produces a healthy environment for both young and old. Photography put simply is a love affair with light and how it reacts. It means painting with light and makes you very aware of the surroundings.”

Reaping the benefits by Andy Bryenton

Modern farming has become an intensive blend of science and hard work, with technology allowing savvy farmers to increase their yields through the application of precise data. In this field, one name stands out internationally above the rest. Those who remember the Remington shaver advertisements of the 1980s will recall the spokesman for that brand insisting that he was ‘so impressed that he bought the company’. It takes a lot to make that kind of impression, but when it comes to great results on the land, farmer Colin Hurst can certainly relate. He was so impressed by the performance of Ag Leader’s suite of self-steering and soil testing technologies that he’s become an avid advocate — and local supplier — of these Americansourced productivity solutions. Colin’s farming operation spans cropping wheat, barley, grass and vege seed as well as a livestock operation focusing on cattle rearing. With a variety of facets covering the spread of agricultural disciplines, he was keen to look into two modern advancements to help boost productivity. The first was soil analysis — literally drilling down into the substrate of what makes a healthy and abundant crop. The second was a auto steer system for his tractors, allowing

greater precision when performing tasks in field. When sourcing an steering system for his big John Deere, Colin came across the Ag Leader brand, a top name in the United States. It was on a later visit to that nation to look into cutting edge soil analysis that it all came together — because Ag Leader were ahead of the pack there, too. “The whole thing clicked,” he says. “Ag Leader covered the whole gambit of high tech ag equipment. But despite being a household name in the States, they were not widely known in New Zealand.” Like that famous Remington boss, he decided to take matters into his own hands. First up came an easy-to-use and simple to learn self drive system, allowing Colin to cover every inch of the field while reducing operator stress behind the wheel. When spreading fert — a vital chore — Ag Leader’s system shuts off the spreader on the turns, leaving the headlands clear. GOING BANANAS FOR CATTLE BY ANN MORGAN

Members of Tropical Fruit Growers of New Zealand (TFGNZ) are producing banana crops in a sustainable way to supply New Zealanders with locally grown fruit and also provide cattle with a highly nutritious fodder.

C

hair of the group, Hugh Rose, and his wife Pauline live in Rukuwai, and the group was formed for like-minded people to share knowledge of tropical fruit growing. The couple grow a variety of crops including bananas, pineapple, kumara, watermelon, butternut and lotus plants. “I was going to the markets with my watermelon and butternut and met another gardener, Owen Schafli, and we got talking about his garden.” Owen originates from South Africa and no one had told him he couldn’t grow pineapple, peanuts, bananas and pawpaw in Northland.

“He grows everything and was happy to share his knowledge with others and explained the advantages of bananas and how to grow them properly.” Hugh purchased 100 banana stems from Owen after their discussion as he believed he had the right property for them to thrive on. “The stems were planted the oldfashioned way, which is three metres square between plants,” says Hugh. “Then I started doing numbers in my head. At that planting level you can achieve more than 1,000 stems per hectare. Those plants will produce not less than 10kg a year for each stem.

Going on today’s market prices, at say $2/kg, that equals $22,000 a hectare minimum. Owen gets bunches that average 25kg, it is a no brainer. “Pauline and I still farm an eclectic mix of cattle including beef, Red Devon and beef weaners, but now we really are going ‘bananas’ in our old age. “Bananas are a gross feeder. They can take anything you throw at them, including lawn clippings, and they are 100 per cent edible, particularly if you are a cow. “It makes sense to grow the plants on our farms. If you plant them around the effluent pond and fenced waterways these areas are productive and you will get fantastic cattle fodder and a cash crop.” Hugh says farmers have been importing palm kernel as a food source for their stock, yet the same countries we buy the kernel from, feed their stock bananas. “We have thousands of hectares of land suitable for growing around Northland, there is a huge future here.” There are more than 14 different varieties available and the group are planting out trial blocks to see which varieties are most successful on the different soil types. “We are in discussions with Northland Inc and NorthTec about cloning with tissue cultures, identifying good cultivars and mass planting. Hopefully iwi will use the idea to their advantage as well,” says Hugh. The population of NZ is 4,781,000. At 18kg per person, that makes 86,000 tonnes. At $2/kg that's $172

million, 3,085,200kg in Northland alone. Bananas are a multimilliondollar industry for the country — even conservative figures indicate 25–30kg bunches can often be harvested from each stem. Hugh says so long as you are relatively frost free people are growing bananas from Taupo north, including Thames, Tauranga and Katikati. “We believe these crops have huge implications for Northland, and we are looking for farmers interested in planting them. The best land is sheltered and sunny so North facing creek banks, fenced off from stock are a great use of riparian areas or around the effluent ponds. “We use a ‘no tillage’ method of planting and prefer weeds sprayed out before planting. Part of growing a successful crop is to eliminate competition, however the stems are easy to spray around with non-systemic or organic weed-killer.” The TFGNZ will seek to meet farmers’ requirements with stems from existing plantations and once the fruit is in production TFGNZ will coordinate regular supply to the retail outlets. “Bananas will grow on hillsides and amongst scrub as Owen demonstrates. The farmer is expected to pay for stems, however the price will be heavily discounted, and we recommend a variety of types to find what grows best for the individual property. “Initial costs are roughly $10,000 a hectare, which will return $22,000 a year based on $2 a kilo and this is a conservative figure. Ongoing costs

are minimal and can be part of the day’s routine, trimming excess foliage when required. “The area grown will automatically replenish itself and provide sufficient material to more than double the size of the plantation annually.

“Bananas are a highly nutritious stock food — everything can and will be eaten by stock so nothing goes to waste.” For more information contact Hugh at hugh@prose.co.nz, phone 027 439 1572 or 09 972 7727 or visit facebook. com/TFGNZ.

Stone age fertilisers by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

The earliest global date for the beginning of the Stone Age is a mere 2.5 million years ago, in Africa. However, the building of topsoil on the planet began from the moment planet Earth was put in motion. The raw materials for topsoil are rocks, in particular basalt rock, which in its molten form captures a full complement of minerals. Our planet is approximately 4.5 billion years old. The tools necessary for building topsoil, are glacial movement of ice flows. As the ice flows it grinds the mountainous rock down to a fine powder — when the ice recedes, it leaves behind, metres deep, of precious mineralised topsoil. Added to this is the interaction of live volcanoes and all the fine rock powder they spew out across

the land. Our planet’s topsoil is basically derived from rock dust. How alive and magic is our ‘living planet’ having the ability to crush multimineral rock dust to build topsoil, to maintain life. All life is dependent upon topsoil and water — these are the two most precious commodities on our planet. Agrissentials are the pioneers of multi-

mineral rock dust blended with fish, seaweed and microorganisms. These fertilisers have the ability to regenerate topsoil by increasing the microorganisms and the worm population within the soil, breaking down all waste and manure, back into topsoil. Both our RokSolid full spectrum fertiliser and our Oceans100 fish and seaweed liquid fertiliser contain more than 63 minerals, all in a natural form and converted by the microorganisms to a plant available form. In this state, the converted minerals taken up by the plant are all recognised at the cellular level, building strong healthy plants, which transfers on to strong healthy animals and people. It’s the ultimate system. Stone Age fertilisers have been pumping away in the soil for millions of years. The introduction of synthetic soluble chemical fertilisers in the last 40 years has witnessed the erosion of our beautiful topsoil, at a rate of 200 to 300 million tonnes a year in New Zealand alone — that’s unsustainable (Dr Morgan Williams report to the NZ Government 2004). Agrissentials, Stone Age fertilisers, made from ground up rock and blended with fish, seaweed, microorganisms and other plant material, are the ultimate fertilisers for all producing units. All of Agrissentials products evolve out of the environment and as such, are part of the environment and part of nature, nontoxic and completely safe. While the NZ regional councils haggle and hustle over farming, soils, water and the environment, in an effort to keep the ‘agrochemical’ system going, the current chemical problems

will continue to destroy our soils and pollute our water. The chemical system is insane. Don’t forget your free friendly natural atmospheric nitrogen captured by the microorganisms and stored in your soil organic matter, ready to roll — saves you money and looks after your farm and your environment. Should I take Coenzyme Q10? Part 2 Most people make all the Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) they need. Some however should take extra as a supplement. CoQ10 is made in your liver from the same enzyme that makes cholesterol. This is why drugs that reduce cholesterol can restrict CoQ10 by as much as 50%. This can reduce the amount of energy made especially in organs and muscles and is why I recommend people on cholesterol medication take 100–200mg of rapid absorption CoQsol® each day. I recently spoke to a client who had experienced a lot of muscle pain and stiffness while on statins. After just a week on CoQ10 the pain had completely gone. I generally find it takes 1–2 months to restore muscle function and energy. What makes CoQ10 so special is its ability to carry electrons. This enables CoQ10 to move hydrogen electrons within your cell mitochondria to make energy molecules called ATP. This ATP is how your body works. Inadequate CoQ10 levels reduce energy output and this is felt as tiredness and often as muscle weakness.

This ability to carry electrons also makes CoQ10 an excellent antioxidant. It can donate to free radicals their missing electrons preventing them from stealing electrons leading to cell and tissue damage. In particular it protects circulating LDL cholesterol from being damaged by free radicals. This is the first step in the process of forming plaques that block arteries. There is some good research suggesting increasing CoQ10 can be helpful for people with neurodegenerative problems such as Parkinson’s. I will generally add additional CoQ10 either as the patented CoQsol® or my specialised MTQ10. Most people feel a real difference within 1–2 months. Give me a call if you need more information. The beauty of containers Utilising Spacewise containers is a cost effective solution for people on farms or lifestyle blocks and brings added bonuses for those needing extra accommodation or storage space. The idea to reinvent the use of shipping containers came about from a need in the market and owners Dion and Grant decided to become part of the solution to a storage problem. “When customising units increased in popularity both domestically and commercially it made sense to have our own modification workshop to create

these units,” says Spacewise manager Roxane Carlin. The company provide full corten steel containers. This extra tough high grade steel endures the elements of the sea and the salt water. They are not lighter domestic units therefore they have a longer lifespan. “People source shipping containers for a variety of reasons and we ensure our containers are structurally sound and built to industry standards. Modifications are inspected to ensure that they meet our stringent quality requirements,” says Roxane. If you require extra farm equipment storage, office space, on-site shower facilities or sleeping quarters for shearing teams or farm workers, the Spacewise team can help. “Specific requests of container conversions can be completed by our highly skilled engineers. Our team can do as little or as much of the conversion as you require. “The units can be fully insulated and lined and fitted with toiletries and sanitation. The framework and locking mechanisms we use make them highly secure, and plumbing and an electrical system can be installed where necessary. The containers

can also be modified with additional shuttered windows.” When these windows are not in use they can be secured keeping your belongings safe. Containers can also be used as storage units for dangerous chemicals and substances or animal feed. The lifespan for a container travelling around the world on a boat is approximately 25 years so on land the lifespan in much longer. “People may be concerned about how the unit will look in years to come. All buildings require maintenance over time and these are no different. If you don’t look after it, it’ll deteriorate,” says Roxane. “It will need washing and eventually repainting to keep it looking

good and protected but as they are not sitting on a boat being attacked by salt air they won’t fall apart from corrosion so easily.” Keeping the structure elevated off the ground by 150–200mm helps keep it in good condition as the air can circulate around it and keeping it painted certainly helps with the appearance and protects if from the elements. If they are in the country and not by the ocean this means the salt air won’t corrode them. “The benefit is you can relocate them on the property or take them with you if you move. “They do not cost a lot of money to purchase and if you get 10–15 years’ use you would be pretty happy.”

Putting knowledge to good use Kerry and Barbara Powell decided to put their intensive grassland farming experience, having farmed 500 dairy cows, and Kerry’s electrical knowledge to good use. They knew electric fencing played a vital role in successful grass management, and used what products were available at the time, many of which had not improved for many decades. Kerry and Barbara saw ways to improve the traditional products allowing for simpler livestock management, making farming life easier. From this idea Taragate was born. Operating on a part-time basis alongside their farming operation since 1989 and then full time since 2000, their family business has been manufacturing innovative electric fence products based on making real and practical improvements. Taragate has forged its way from humble beginnings operating out of a woolshed in the heartland of New Zealand’s premier dairy region to a large factory where they now operate from on the outskirts of Hamilton. Taragate products are now sold in Australia, the United Kingdom and Ireland as well as the United States, Costa Rica and Chile. Taragate’s high quality, easy to use products have built a reputation of excellence, and it’s strong relationships with other innovative companies around the globe allow it to constantly introduce new products and ideas. Fabulous fencing You have thought about it and keep meaning to do it but it’s one of those projects that stays on the ‘to do’ list. Fencing is one of the most sought after features for property owners. That stunning black or white post and rail fencing that not only frames a property but is also safe and durable. It’s a case of good looks meets necessity. You want something safe, something that will last — forget painting and the like. Something that has a WOW factor. Woodshield is an Australasian company who have the answer. Untreated timber encased in recycled polymer. The internal timber is completely chemical free. The outer polymer is sourced from agricultural uses such as irrigation piping or dripper tube that would normally go to landfill. The combination of the two provide a long lasting product with very little maintenance required and totally sustainable. No drying cracked timber, so no loose fasteners. No painting, no rotting, no rusting, no termite issues and splinter free — safe for animals. The whole product can be totally recycled so it does not leave a footprint of waste. All standard nails, screws and bolts can be used. You can attach wire, hang a gate, build an arena, fence a

paddock. It can be ‘knocked’ or rammed in the ground and with a lifespan of four to five times longer than treated timber or steel, it is a cost effective application. It can be used anywhere in or around water as the timber is totally sealed. The posts have been used in the ocean around Australia, NZ, Japan and the USA for growing oysters, building jettys and coastal fencing. In 2014 the fence posts also beat the fires just outside Melbourne, Australia. Because there is no chemical treatment there is no fuel for the flames. No dried out brittle timber so no cracks for the embers, and the fire swept past leaving the posts untouched. OK, so is it too good to be true? Certified organic with BioGro across the county, the organic dairy farmers, are using it as are some of the Kiwi growers. Equine properties have installed the product, — local vineyards are growing grapes off it. It is used for car park barriers, park surrounds and playgrounds. Believe it or not, it is used in the ocean around the north to grow oysters. Do yourself a favour — have a look on line — further information: www. woodshield.com.au.

It was intensive with sheep and beef as well. “I had always thought I would like a stud of my own one day. When we had left the big farm my parents said they would help me back onto a farm one day and we purchased this property when I was 19 years old. “My house is in the bottom of the valley and I was driving up the top on a frosty day and looked out I thought, this is paradise, and named the farm Paradise Valley.” The 600 acre farm is medium to steep with a bit of flat land and each

decided to put a Murray Grey bull to them and breed. The breed originally comes from Australia where a farmer put an Angus bull over a Shorthorn cow and produced a smokey grey calf. “I found a bull for sale in Wellsford and liked what the owners were doing on their farm. They also had stud heifers for sale so I bought a couple.” The next year Micheal bought a few more cows in-calf and the following year the rest of the herd was for sale so he purchased them. “I have been fussy on what stock I have kept as replacements and this year I will calve 120 stud and commercial. I am carrying 50 rising two-year-old steer and heifers that will be fattened and killed in spring and 800 ewes that will be lambing. I usually lamb 130 per cent. “The ewes are Romney and go to Dorset Down Poll / Dorset cross ram because they produce a nice long meaty lamb and they are ready to kill early. I buy in all of my ewes and am hoping to move to a bigger property in a few years, one that is more sustainable to breed my own instead of battling the markets.” Micheal says the Murray Greys are a nice slow growing type of cattle that are not too big in the frame. “I think we have been sacrificing flavour for growth and I believe the slow growing is where you get the great taste in beef from. They get more fat on them and that is good with them living here on the hills. “They are easy calving so are a popular choice for beef and dairy farmers to use over the heifers and because they are lighter in the coat they can tolerate the

Micheal says Murray Greys are great milkers, are easy calving and their lighter coat means they can tolerate summer heat better than some other breeds heat in the summer better which is a bonus, unlike the Angus. “They are great milkers and produce very good calves for their size and the cow to calf ration for weaning is really good. Most beef farmers would target 50 per cent body weight at weaning but my stock are weaning up to 75 per cent of their body weight in calf.” Micheal used to have Angus, and mixed breeds but he says the Murray Grey have worked much better for him with less problems at calving. “I believe a lot of breeders go for the calving ease and these are a good practical cattle and polled so you don’t have to dehorn them. “I have had visitors from Australia and Brazil come to look at my herd because they have liked the photos they have seen on my Facebook page.

The only electronic pest management systems scientifically proven to work PLUG-IN Pest Free is cost effective, environmentally friendly, and the only scientifically tested and proven electronic solution for the removal of rats, mice and cockroaches. We were delighted to see ‘Fair Go’ expose some of the many copycat products that try to imitate the Pest Free technology but simply do not perform as they claim. You can see our comparison video at https://pluginpestfree.co.nz/ testimonials/ The PLUG-IN Pest Free patented electronic internals are highly sophisticated, creating a structured pulse on the existing wiring within the home or building. This signal effectively modulates the existing electro-magnetic field created by the 50Hz supply as the coil is switched on and off, and the technology simply makes the environment uninhabitable for these pests. It will not affect humans, household pets, computers or the electricity flow in the building. PLUG-IN Pest Free has full HACCP approval in Australia alongside International Certification, as well as being awarded a number of exporting grants by the Australian government. “With an unconditional 60 day money back guarantee, this is a no-risk purchase”, says Michele.

Sighting female bellbirds

25

Waikato and Hamilton residents are being asked to keep an extra sharp eye out for bellbirds (korimako) heading into winter. The request follows the sighting of a female of the species in Hillcrest, the first time a female bellbird has been reported in the city in recent history. “This sighting, which came at the tailend of summer is exciting as it indicates the female could have been nesting in the city,” said Waikato Regional Council senior biodiversity officer Andrea Julian. “Heading into winter, when bellbirds can be more active looking for alternative food sources, we’d ask the public to keep a good look out for the birds in the city and report any sightings, particularly of any more females.” Bellbirds are shy little beauties and are only found in New Zealand. They are about 20 centimetres long. The female is brownish green with a thin yellowishwhite stripe running from the short curved bill across the cheek. Hamilton Halo is a multi-agency project aimed at building up native bird numbers in the city, including bellbirds, through targeted pest control. “This year we are going to undertake bellbird counts in the city and in the Halo control blocks using our Hamilton Halo partner Landcare Research,” said Andrea. “However, when a species is still at very low numbers, reports from the general public are particularly valuable, giving us a picture of where and when

the birds are starting to visit the city.” Bellbirds were once found throughout New Zealand but had either disappeared or drastically declined by the mid-late 19th century. In 2010 a multi-agency programme led by Landcare Research and the University of Waikato, released bellbirds from Auckland’s Tiritiri Matangi and Tawharanui bird sanctuaries into the Hamilton Gardens, with the aim of reestablishing the birds in the city. Unfortunately none stayed and no bellbirds were seen for several years after their departure. “Since then occasional unbanded birds have been seen, about one or two a year, almost certainly as a result of predator control in native forest areas around the region,” said Landcare Research technician Neil Fitzgerald. “It appears the sightings in more recent years are part of a natural dispersal of bellbirds back into the city. We are very keen for the public to help us track what’s happening with this species in Hamilton.” To get a better idea of what male and female bellbirds look and sound like visit www.nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species/ bellbird. FARMERS - utilise that fertiliser you store in your effluent ponds to give your paddocks a boost

Forward thinking for food Beth Hampton from Matamata has been selected alongside Jemima Snook from Christchurch to represent New Zealand at a summit focussed on solving one of the world’s most important issues — how to feed a growing population.

• We run two High Horse power pumps and secondary pumps to boost up-flow when needed.

They will join 100 other delegates from 49 countries and aged between 18 and 25 in Brussels, Belgium on October 9–13. The delegates share a passion for agriculture and a vision of a world without hunger. Aiming to address the UN Sustainability Goals of ending hunger, achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture, Bayer, together with partners Groene Kring and Fédération des Jeunes Agriculteurs (FJA), is hosting the summit, which has the theme of ‘Feeding a Hungry Planet’. Those attending will share their diverse experiences and work together to generate innovative, sustainable and actionable solutions to global food security challenges. Their mission is to come up with new ideas which can drive agricultural progress across the globe and be put into practice back home. Beth has always enjoyed science and analysis, and is currently in her final semester of a Bachelor of Science double majoring in Environmental Science and Agribusiness at the University of Waikato. Beth says it’s an amazing opportunity to represent New Zealand at the Youth Ag Summit and one she is hugely appreciative and excited about. “Food security is a global challenge and New Zealand has a role to play

in addressing the issue. The Summit will act as a chance to collaborate with an international cohort and I’m really looking forward to how it might challenge and develop my thinking about sustainable agriculture and issues of food security. “I’m also very keen to hear different international perspectives regarding environmental and agriculture policy, and how they and subsequent experiences may relate to the New Zealand context.” Bayer New Zealand Crop Science head Scott Hanson says it’s important that young Kiwis get the opportunity to attend international summits.

“I believe there is a need for young leaders to be engaged in finding sustainable solutions to the growing global need for safe and nutritious food. The Youth Ag Summit is an opportunity to broaden the perspectives with others from around the world. It will also enable young leaders to further grow personally and develop their knowledge and foster their ideas, share best practices and explore the role of modern agriculture in feeding a hungry planet.” Visit www.youthagsummit.com to learn more about the Summit or go to facebook.com/YouthAgSummit.

BUSINESS PROFILE

The local advantage

Shane Davis has had his own fertiliser spreading business — ‘Shane Davis Bulk Spreading Ltd’, operating in the central Waikato area since 1990, building an extensive knowledge of the industry and how to best fulfill farmers needs. As a keen 24 year-old, Shane decided to go into business with his father. “My father had a long standing trucking business, which carted fertiliser. A lot of farmers use to ask him if he had a spreader, so I saw an opportunity to get into the business. Also there was a local contractor who was looking at getting out of it, so I was able to pick up some initial clients to get the ball rolling,” said Shane. For a number of years, Shane ran his spreading business alongside his father’s. His wife Janette also came aboard to handle the accounts. The trucking business was sold around 10 years ago, but Shane carried on operating his fertiliser spreading. With his Mercedes truck set up with the latest technology like GPS guidance and a computerised auto adjusting spread rate, he can be sure to spread your fertiliser in the most efficient and effective way. “I live in Cambridge, so I travel depending on where my clients are. I mostly work out of Te Awamutu, Tirau and Morrinsville fertiliser stores. But if there’s work to do I’ll travel anywhere. I

also have a loader for bulk deliveries, so less transport for the fertiliser, making things more economical.” With other companies also offering spreading, Shane says that his “one man operation” is an advantage, as when farmers book a job, they talk to Shane directly, so there’s no secondhand passing of information and the need to repeat the same instructions to new drivers. “They talk to me from the get go, till the job is done and with health and safety these days that’s very important.” Shane enjoys his job because “you meet a lot of good people and see a lot of the countryside. “The days just fly by, rather than being stuck behind a desk.” He also enjoys the seasonal aspect of the job. ”When things are a bit quieter I love being able to spend time trail bike riding with my son Ryan, helping with horse riding with my daughter Paige, and catching up on jobs around the lifestyle property.” Shane looks forward to another busy season in the spring. Proper grain sampling and analysing

In any supply chain, business must be based on understanding and meeting the needs of buyers, and in the grain industry, must develop links with merchants. 1. Harvest quality At harvest, analysis can only determine grain quality if sampling is representative of grain loads coming into store/silo. Results from analysis of harvested grain will confirm if grain meets the proposed market’s criteria. 2. Protection During storage, sampling for temperature and moisture content is required to assess changes in physical condition and to verify that storage targets are met. Without effective drying and cooling, spoilage may occur and potential market opportunities may be lost. 3. Out-loading At out-loading from the store/ silo, representative samples taken as trucks are loaded provide evidence of what has been dispatched. This is the best opportunity for the grower’s and purchaser’s assessments of delivered quality to match. 4. Know the quality received At receipt, most buyers will sample from each truck, often using automated equipment, and should follow the best practice recommended by assurance schemes recognised in their industry. For any questions regarding information or instrumentation for grain sampling and analysis please visit www.ffi.nz or see us at North Island Agricultural Field Days 14–17 June, 2017, Stand PC25.

However, supplying grain to a specification is not easy. Grain is inherently variable and specifications become ever more demanding. Failure to meet specifications means farmers face price deductions or, in the worst case, rejection. Much of the cost could be saved if the quality of data obtained by both the seller and buyer of grain match each other well. This can be achieved by adopting similar standards for grain sampling and accurate analysis on and off the farm. Unlike in Australia, farmers, grain handlers and millers in New Zealand do not have set standards to follow for grain testing. Moisture content is one of the most important characteristics for grain buyers and sellers and is featured in all contracts. High moisture content can result in spoilage, incur deductions and rejection. Representative sampling and accurate analysis ensures that you know the quality of your harvested grain and that you are confident it will meet most buyers’ requirements. It all starts on the farm where the farmer needs a representative sample prior to harvest, taken from several areas of the paddock. Below are some outlined steps that make it is easy to determine the quality of your grain before delivering to mills and stores:

challenge is simply meeting enough people to have a discussion about alternative ways of looking after the soil, pastures and animals and getting past entrenched mindsets about the health of the soil and how that works. It’s an ongoing endeavour to get that message across but it’s one that is easily warmed to, once people take the time to have a discussion. Everything involved is logical. We are working with nature’s systems, soil biology is part of that and we have not utilised the benefits of soil biology enough in modern agriculture. There’s a lot to be gained from that in

terms of efficiency on the farm, quality of produce and environmental performance which is a big one these days. Everything connects to the soil quality. He is proud of what his business has achieved so far. “We have led farmers and horticulturists to drastically reduce farm chemical input, parasiticides, and in horticulture a number of our customers have made the step over to organics because we’ve made the pathway easy. But soil health is for everyone not just for organic people. Everybody in farming benefits from it.”

I do everything to fit around working towards that, one hectare at a time,” he says. It all started in the early 1990s when Steven faced some health challenges that started to make him think about farming and how our food was produced. This inspired him “to find better alternatives, knowing that nutrients was the start of health. I left the farm to pursue farming without chemicals, and I’ve ended up helping farmers look after their soils, crops and pastures to do that,” he says. “It was an understanding that the quality of the soil affected the quality of produce, in regard to its health, and pest and disease resistance, and I wanted to help reduce the amount of chemicals in the farming system and food chain.” For the last 22 years Steven has run his own businesses which provided farmers with soil rehabilitation strategies and nutrition focussed products. Then in 2007 he established BioAg Ltd, a privately owned New Zealand business which introduced the Australian based BioAg agronomic system and liquid culture range. The company is based in Napier but operates New Zealand wide. With spreading the biological message, he says that “the biggest

Award winning rust protection

Prolan UK has been awarded the top environmental award at Britain’s leading farm machinery, equipment and services show, heading off 900 exhibitors. This award recognises ‘a new product or innovation which has the most impact on the environment’. Prolan products manufactured in New Zealand from sheep’s wool grease — lanolin, are exported around the world and used in the coldest and toughest of environments to protect machinery and vehicles, including wind turbines. There is a growing trend in the marketplace today for cleaner greener products. Following this trend Prolan products are replacing traditional petrochemical lubricants in Europe and one company in Denmark alone has replaced 15 products with a can of Prolan. Often it is a losing battle trying to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply longterm storage. Prolan’s natural products

protect quad bike and 4WD chassis’, fertiliser spreaders — in fact anywhere where rust is an issue. The lanolin acts as a wax barrier that prevents air and moisture getting to surfaces and so prevents corrosion. Prolan is safe on rubbers, wiring and electrics — it will not break these down. Bikes can be water blasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quad bike frames rust out within three years with no protection. More often than not quad bikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. So it is not hard to double the life of the bike and increase its resale value. There is also an increasing number of agricultural

Prolan is coated internally and underneath to provide protection. The significant cost savings to fleet owners are that they are reporting far fewer WOF and COF failures from rust since using Prolan products, less downtime on maintenance, fewer

part replacements and increased resale values. Come and speak to the experienced Prolan team at the Fieldays about the onsite coating service now available to protect fertiliser spreaders, loaders and truck chassis’. DAIRY ADVERTORIAL

Smart sensors Levno provides an ‘ecosystem’ of smart sensors to deliver realtime remote monitoring for farmers of their farms in a simplistic view built with powerful data. Levno monitors fuel for theft, milk for quality and water for consent and efficient utilisation. Levno enables farmers to better manage their business. We provide an ‘at a glance’ platform for efficient, quality on-farm decision making by converting data into information. Levno was originally developed to help stop fuel shrinkage on farm. There is a common problem in the rural community where fuel is regularly stolen while farmers are not looking. Levno provides farmers with 24/7 visibility of all movements into and out of tanks – already this patented invention has saved the rural community hundreds of thousands of dollars. This ability to provide remote monitoring for fuel provided new opportunities, allowing Levno to develop an ‘ecosystem’ expanding to the remote monitoring of liquids other than fuel stored on farm. At the request of Fonterra, Levno set about developing a milk vat monitoring system. The Levno milk vat monitoring system enables farmers to meet the new MPI regulations,

and while other solutions exist, none sit truly independently of the vat assets and can claim to not impact the milk quality to the extent that Levno’s lidar technology over Bluetooth can. As sensors were added it became logical to extend the value offering to enable farmers to make quality decisions from founded and accurate information. We saw an opportunity to become the ambulance at the top of the cliff rather than the bottom and provide a proactive solution for on-farm challenges rather than insurance. Levno is a smart, interconnected hub. The transceiver speaks to sensors, sensors speak to a database and the database populates the farmer’s dashboard. This allows the farmer to make quick, informed decisions within minutes of an event occurring. Our fuel product alerts farmers when fuel is removed, added or running low. Levno for Milk measures temperature, volume and agitation of the milk vat. This milk product has been developed to ensure farmers are compliant with

To provide practical, farmer based feedback on animal evaluation research, development, and communication, New Zealand Animal Evaluation (NZAEL), a subsidiary of DairyNZ, has established a new farmer advisory panel. The aim of this panel is to create a forum for two-way discussion between farmers, researchers and the NZAEL team, and to assist NZAEL in identifying practical issues that could be implemented as part of the strategy. “It is vitally important for farmers to be involved in genetic evaluation development,” says Dr Jeremy Bryant, NZAEL manager. “The perspective and experience of farmers is invaluable when it comes to enhancing the animal evaluation system. “The six farmers on the panel have farming businesses that are representative of a range of New Zealand farming systems. They are advocates of genetic improvement and will meet about

The first is a project focussed on reducing the ‘reproof bias’ in AE enrolled sires (read more at dairynz.co.nz/reproof) and the second is a mid-term review of the economic models that are used to generate breeding worth. The review will commence in spring 2017, and the panel along with other stakeholders will be involved in providing views on the key focus areas. “DairyNZ invests a significant amount of farmers’ levy money in NZAEL each year, and it is critical that we look to maximise value to farmers — getting more direct farmer input is one important way to do that,” says Bruce Thorrold, DairyNZ strategy and investment leader productivity. In addition to working closely with the panel, NZAEL values feedback from all New Zealand dairy farmers and will continue to consult the industry on big changes and developments via breeding company meetings, user group

The benefits of change Managing a dairy farm is not much different than running any business venture, because sometimes you ‘have to change’, and sometimes you ‘choose to change’. Rod McKinnon decided to change to a Yardmaster Halo Effluent Monitoring and Control System, and says not only has he received the anticipated return on investment, but there have also been some unexpected advantages that were a pleasant surprise - especially peace of mind. The Halo system is so cleverly designed that Rod and his farm workers quickly mastered the intuitive interface controls that can be accessed on all types of mobile phones, laptops and desktop computers. Another key component to the system is the self priming multistage Yardmaster pump. This self priming, short mounted pump, sits on the land instead of floating in liquid, which helps with health and safety, and there is no need for intervention on startup and you don’t need a floating frame which saves costs. This pump, in conjunction with the Halo system, can perform multi duties eliminating the need for more than one pump on the farm and it is multistage. The Clean Green Effluent System removes the need to construct mega ponds or massive storage tanks. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can contribute to millions of litres per year of liquid to be dispersed. Rainwater contribution can equate to more liquid than is produced in the dairy shed. The removal of open mega ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall farm dairy effluent having to be applied to land. The compact yet highly efficient Clean Green Effluent System is now recognised world wide. This dairy effluent system automatically disperses effluent with virtually no environmental impact through its super low application rate. The system starts by filtering out the solids through the Clean Green Effluent Co patented Weeping Wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash then recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water. This reduces total freshwater consumption to about 20 litres/cow/day, a marked reduction from the national average of 50 to 70 litres/cow/day. This reduces the amount

• Small foot print • No storage ponds • Fully automated • 0.25mm application/24hrs • Low man hours to maintain • Low running costs • 60% fresh water savings • Fully patented system

of effluent to be dispersed to land to 20 litres/cow/day. The Clean Green Effluent System has a unique distribution system that was designed for all soil types as its super low application depth (0.25mm or ¼ mm) can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run off. This totally automated system removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems. The super low application depth allows for application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at field capacity. As the super low application

depth allows us to apply farm dairy effluent virtually all year round, this eliminates the need for mega ponds. The minimal storage requirements are met by as few as two enclosed water tanks. This cost effective, distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain. DAIRY BUSINESS PROFILE

Our health is in our soil Many farmers across the country have successfully followed the biological farming method with excellent, sustainable results for several generations. Total Fert Ltd consultant Grant Fallon has a natural affiliation with the land and sustainable farming practices, and has worked in the agricultural/horticultural industry most of his working life. He was born and bred in Mangatawhiri, North Waikato, where his parents were farming after his father returned from serving in the second world war. “I have always been passionate about all facets of biology. I started working in orchards and glasshouses growing tomatoes and beans when I was still at college,” said Grant. He and wife Janice moved to their 42 hectares at Riponui in 1986 and farm the property the biological way. The land is primarily used for beef and sheep rearing, and they have planted

50 fruit trees in an orchard. “Modern biological farming uses nature and science to build the quality of the soil, with the understanding that healthy soil will be able to support healthy crops and livestock. This takes advantage of the natural processes, which promote good soil, healthy crops and healthy animals.” As a biological/organic fertiliser field consultant for 15 and a half years, Grant has attended many instructional seminars in New Zealand and Australia, achieved a level 5 NZQA certificate in organic growing and a certificate in small business management. “Excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides can upset the balance in the soil,” said Grant. “Productive soil is achieved by applying the correct volume

and type of minerals after soil analysis. It is important to provide a food source for the biology and adopt best farming practices — stock rates, crop rotation and tillage methods. “These practices allow the natural system to develop superior soil structure and microbiology and improve crop quality. This helps increase stock yields and improves animal health and reduces negative environmental impacts by controlling waste such as leaching or effluent. “They also help control weeds, pests and diseases, and increase moisture content in the topsoil and improve drought resistance and the uptake of nutrients into the pasture and crops. “Many farmers are beginning to understand that natural fertilisers, along with best practice production methods, result in higher profitability of their farms, orchards and other agricultural productions.” Total Fert is BioGro certified and offers a full personal consultancy service and customised fertiliser blends for your requirements, including dairy, drystock, cropping and orchards, to suit your budget. “We take pride in being honest and

Doing things the natural way With a love of natural health, trained nurse Tineke Verkade set out to help people. Years later she is now also helping out people and their animals — the natural way. Born in Holland, Tineke Verkade immigrated to New Zealand with her family in 1977. She started out her New Zealand life as a nurse at Waikato hospital. “I’ve been a registered nurse as well as a nursing tutor since 1968, and I have always been interested in natural health especially when my children arrived.” While nursing, she studied homeopathy and naturopathy. “They were really good to me regarding the studies I did to become qualified. Her genuine concern for the overall health of the land, animals and people is the driving force behind Tineke’s commitment to natural health methods. After 16 years she left the hospital and started her own naturopath clinic “and never really looked back.” “In Waikato you have a lot of people that are farmers that come and see you, and they said ‘can do something for the cows?’” That inspired her to start homeopathic farm support in 1997. As well as supplying products, Tineke is passionate about teaching farmers homeopathic and natural methods. She goes to regional field days, holds seminars and “talks to farmers on the phone all day long” she says.

So what is Homeopathy? In short, it is a system of natural medicines that are used in small doses. It is based on a ‘like cures like’ idea, where the sick person or animal’s symptoms are cured using a medicine that would cause the same symptoms in a healthy person or animal. An animal is treated according to its symptoms, behaviour and characteristics instead of diagnosing or naming a disease. Homeopathy seeks to be preventative and therapeutic when helping animals. It is focussed on assisting the body to heal itself. “We have an amazing amount of farmers on our database, and what I’m proud of is the initial farmers that came and were taught. “Most of them have become certified organic farmers which I’m very pleased about because to be a certified organic farmer you have to have a lot of skills to keep it all going — they are amazing.” She’s also proud of how her “unique and unusual business is still here, helping farmers and their animals. I have staff who I wouldn’t be able to work without — they are the best.”

he 46 year old was brought up in Papakura — South Auckland for the first 18 years of her life by her grandfather. “Originally the main employment in town was forestry but back in the 60s it closed and a lot of our iwi had to move away to find employment and became

urban Maori,” says Edwina. In 1991 a meat works called King Country Meats was established nearby by the local iwi to generate employment and encourage families to return home. The company is now owned by Crusader Meats. “Because of the troubles starting in South Auckland back in the 90s

We were all able to work and gain new skills.” Predominantly a male environment, the team Edwina worked with consisted of five women and the rest were men. Being left-handed made things even more difficult for her to learn the skills as everything is done backwards. “I had no experience in boning and didn’t even know how to hold a knife. I was uncomfortable but had to learn to use one. “Eventually a new plant opened and as females we were able to try different

aspects of the job with the men. We learnt how to bone out different cuts of meat, mainly lamb and mutton. I spent 15-20 years in the industry in between having my children. “I gained a lot of knowledge from a co-worker, Marion Nathan. Being in such a male environment she was a great teacher and she taught me how to bone and inspired me to grab a knife, learn, and that women can do anything. “The last six years of my stint in the freezing works was at Te Kuiti Meats and I climbed the ladder to become an A-grade boner. “It was a very hard road. Women were treated like ‘meat’ and the men believed women should be in the

LIVESTOCK back packing not doing the boning. “My motto every morning was, ‘beat the machine’ — that meant beat the band saw. “To beat the machine meant you wouldn’t have any piles of meat left to cut. You worked like a robot. If you were left with piles of meat you would be laughed at, but in saying that I met a lot of great people, earnt the respect of the men and became very good at my job. “Now days I work at Pa Harakeke, located in the heart of the Pureora forest, providing services around the timber trail and eco tours. “I love working on our marae and if there are no men around I will gladly grab the knife and cut the meat for our huis and functions. “The sheep comes in and we hang it in the chiller to keep it at the correct temperature until we need it. “We start with boning the legs and take the mid-section off the rib cage and go down to the neck and take the shoulders off. We lay it on the table and then tunnel or slash bone the legs and they are used for the hangi or roasts.” The mid-section can be rolled or used to make stews and the shoulders are boned out and rolled in netting for roasting or the hangi. “I believe younger women can achieve big things in the industry, you just have to work hard. The meat works can take you places such as a supervisor role, leading hand or quality control officer,” says Edwina.

Passengers on quad bikes Carrying a passenger on a quad bike that is not designed for more than one person can increase the risk of accidents by making it more unstable, more difficult to control, and more likely to roll over. Worksafe New Zealand has clarified the circumstances in which it is acceptable to carry passengers on single-seat quad bikes in consultation with Federated Farmers, Beef + Lamb NZ, and DairyNZ. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, persons conducting a business or undertaking such as farming must identify and manage risks arising from work, so far as is reasonably practicable. WorkSafe’s position on quad bikes is that single-seat quad bikes should not normally be used to carry passengers. “WorkSafe’s guidance is that you should use the safest vehicle for the job. When carrying a passenger this would mean using a vehicle specifically designed for more than one person,” said Al McCone, WorkSafe sector lead — agriculture. WorkSafe acknowledges that farmers and others using quad bikes for work need the policy clarified so they clearly understand what is acceptable in terms of carrying passengers. It is only acceptable when there is no reasonable alternative having considered factors such as availability

of alternative vehicles, terrain, and rider and passenger capability. In those cases where a passenger is taken, appropriate mitigation measures must be taken — including limiting speed, briefing the passenger on best practice riding, and avoiding unsuitable terrain. If carrying a passenger on a quad bike is a recurring necessary practice, you should be looking at acquiring an alternative vehicle suitable for the circumstances as soon as is practicable. The clarification also stipulates that carrying a child as a passenger on a quad bike creates a particular set of risks that you need to consider. As with the general principle, you may only carry a child as a passenger if there is no reasonable alternative and following an assessment of the related risk and risk-mitigation measures. “This is a good example of WorkSafe and farmers working together to find practical solutions. We all want fewer accidents and injuries on our farms, so the important thing is that we always consider risk and this guidance emphasises that,” said Beef + Lamb NZ chief executive Sam McIvor.

RURAL WHEELS ADVERTORIAL

Holden’s workhorse has a makeover The formula for a modern pick-up is to blend workhorse credentials and a tough truck image at the same time as rounding off the rough edges from the driving experience. The redeveloped Holden Colorado now on sale at Ebbett Holden Hamilton certainly ticks all of these boxes! Among the changes — which extend well beyond the scope of a routine facelift — are a full-scale cabin makeover, powertrain refinements and key changes to the driving dynamics achieved through new steering and revised chassis tuning.

It’s quieter, steers with greater precision, rides more comfortably on the highway and now boasts the modern dash architecture and quality materials that Holden drivers demand. Visually the Colorado has a new face with a slimline upper grille, revised

bonnet, LED daytime running lights and new wheel designs. But there’s no loss of workhorse credentials with the Colorado retaining a 3,500kg braked towing capacity and a minimum one-tonne payload capacity (and up to 1,048kg on workhorse LT models). Equipment levels see the LT model gain additional features including a leather steering wheel and dusk sensing headlights, and all Crew Cab variants have gained rear ventilation outlets. Crew Cabs are now equipped with a

reversing camera and rear park sensors. Ebbett Holden Hamilton has taken it one step further, offering Farmlands members an exclusive Fieldays deal, including the additional extras of a towbar, deck liner, sportsbar, tonneau cover and rubber mats at a sharp driveaway price, saving Farmlands members over $14,000. Battery conditioner gives maximum battery performance Lead acid batteries die prematurely from sulphation build-up and a RECHARGE treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons, according to Gerard Anselmi of RECHARGE Battery Conditioner. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation process, one chemical reaction to counter another, maximising battery charge holding capacity and preventing premature battery failure. The key is to get in early before the damage has been done” “Treat them early, repeat every two years and keep them charged — it is so simple,” says Anselmi. “Don’t wait till they die and try and resurrect the dead because after the plates have been damaged, it is too late.” Gerard and Debbie will be at the Mystery Creek Field Days again this year on site D-122 as usual (Corner of D and K streets). The 500ml farmer pack works out at $4.50 per car battery. A more cost effective 2-litre commercial pack is also available and can also be purchased on line at www.recharge.net. nz. The 2-litre pack treats 42 x N-70 batteries or 22 x N-150 truck batteries or about five sets of electric golf cart batteries — about $8,000 worth of batteries treated for $290 at the field days special. And yes you can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into

Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem, A car battery can be treated for around $5. THE ALL NEW AG125 IS UNVEILED! “Purpose built and field tested to serve the next generation of demanding customer, the AG125 is a worthy successor to the iconic AG100. The AG100 has attained legendary status on the farmlands of New Zealand, Australia, Latin America and the rural regions of Africa. These environments are harsh, rugged, and put the build quality and reliability of any motorcycle to the test. The AG100 has stood up to those tests, building a reputation as a bike that can be relied upon; renowned for its simplicity and ease of maintenance. The salient product features of the AG100 have been incorporated in the new AG125 and expanded to include technological advancements such as electric start and mono-shock suspension. A reliable 124cc air cooled four-stroke engine delivers plenty of smooth, controllable power. After 43 years of active service, the Real World Tough legend lives on.”

It is putting the joy back into your journey.” The standard model has a super tight turning circle for indoor and outdoor use with a comfortable seat and armrests with heaps of legroom, electronic stability control for extra safety, and it automatically slows down when you are turning. The heavy duty scooter has a dual motor system that makes light work of pavement and steep hills so users can go anywhere with total security, and the heavy duty sport model comes with all the features of the heavyduty version but has a larger frame and wheels and is suitable for more demanding users. The fold-up power chair is also available and is a two-in-one item.

The chair can be used as a normal wheelchair or can be battery powered and travels at approximately nine kilometres per hour. The power controller is connected to the arm rest and can be fitted to the left or right, or it can be fitted to the rear attendant handles and can be driven from the rear. No more huffing and puffing up those hills. Each battery lasts approximately 10km and a second battery can be purchased for convenience. RURAL WHEELS

Custom satisfaction by Andy Bryenton

Ford’s record of success with the Ranger ute rolls on into 2017, with the big blue oval brand preparing themselves for another blockbuster visit to Mystery Creek in the mid-year. But there’s something else afoot before the Field Days fun, and it’s caused a literal blackout. Ford has always been big sponsors and fans of the All Blacks, and ahead of the forthcoming British Lions tour it has released a special edition of both the Ranger and the Everest sports utility, all tricked out in a new, deeper shade of midnight black and all garnished with extra add-ons such as nudge bars, interior detailing, roll bars and massive mag wheels. The overall impression of the FX4 Ranger is of a machine as solidly planted as the All Black’s defensive line and as aggressive as their forwards. That’s entirely the idea, of course — and it feeds into an emerging trend for the new generation of ute owners to want something different. When muscle cars were all the rage in the 1970s, nobody wanted a stock model off the yard. Everyone wanted the limited edition, tuned, pinstriped, candy-flake paint job hot-rod version. It’s becoming a similar world in the top end of the emerging Kiwi super-ute culture, one which mirrors the truck modding exploits of America’s F150 and Dodge Ram owners. Not content with being one of a huge number of drivers who now take

NEW PRODUCT

Not content with being one of the pack, many Ranger drivers now demand custom special editions to really stand out

advantage of the comfort and space of the 21st century light commercial by making it their daily ride — and thus blending into the crowd — those with the need to be seen are embracing special editions like the FX4 with both hands. It’s not just this big black tribute to the ABs which is so coveted. Before Ford’s designers added the custom blackout to their top selling ute there have been others taking the initiative. Customised ‘stealth’ edition Ranger utes appeared on the North Shore, boosting the image above and beyond that of the factory-specced Wildtrak.

Then a series of West Coast Edition Rangers were created in Dargaville, in the West Kaipara, with a variety of combinations of LED lamps, bars, mags, tyres, detailing and interior finishes. So far, no two have been the same, and they have been sold as far away as the West Coast — of the South Island! With other brands such as Nissan releasing special edition utes too — witness the tough-as-nails Barbarian custom Navara — New Zealand has a new status symbol. The custom ute — and by extension, the custom Ford Ranger — is the new king of the highway.

RURAL WHEELS ADVERTORIAL

Custom mods with a purpose Kiwi blokes aren’t known for being showy. No one likes to stand out too much. You don’t see many rugged New Zealand men following fashion trends like the man on the street in Milan or Paris, or riding around on scooters wearing white linen Armani suits. We like to fit in, but still be a bit individual. We’re the same with our vehicles. But there are unwritten rules. It’s a sorry cliche to put bright neon lights under an import hatchback, a spoiler spoils just about any car and anything lowered out that doesn’t have a V8 in it is a joke. Spinning chrome hubcaps, purple crushed velvet seats and faux-diamond encrusted grilles would provoke chuckles rather than awe in the provinces. Then there are those Kiwi blokes who like to ride a bit higher than the rest, those that sit high in their 4x4 utes at the lights and watch the world below them go by. Ute owners definitely aren’t the flashy type — the accessories they desire are there for a purpose. That lid on the back? Well, let me tell you, that holds 200kg, can be removed in seconds, and keeps my tools dry. The bull bars? Geeze, have you seen the amount of hazards around here? Some of those other drivers aren’t even the half of it when you’re headed out onto rural gravel and mud. And then

Anything… Anywhere… Anytime!

there’s the tradies’ mobile workshop — the canopy. These aren’t mods. They’re practical, necessary upgrades to the basic ute models you buy from the dealer. They are designed to do a job; they make the classic Kiwi ute work smarter. And yes, they do look pretty sweet — a touch of custom class that also serves a purpose. Beaut Utes is 100% New

Zealand owned and operated, and the leading manufacturer and distributor of utility accessories throughout New Zealand. With branches in Hamilton, Auckland and Christchurch we can supply our products nationwide to meet your utility accessory needs.
