Land Information New Zealand has announced that eight regional councils, in partnership with their territorial authorities and others, would receive a share of $14 million from the Provincial Growth Fund for Light Detection and Ranging. The Waikato LASS led project will receive up to $1.7 million from PGF to obtain LiDAR elevation datasets for the region, completing an area of 25,000km. Waikato Regional Council is playing a key role in the project. “Third party funding was still necessary to complete the project,” said WLASS chief executive Kelvin French. “This funding is a huge boost to the programme and lessens the impact on ratepayers, who will still be paying part of the project’s cost through local and regional rates. The private sector benefits hugely from having access to this data, too, so we are now working closely with a number of organisations to raise the additional funding required to complete the project.” LiDAR typically uses air-borne sensors to capture detailed information about the surface of the earth and anything that’s on it. This can then be used to produce 3D images, as well as carry out modelling, for things like resource consenting, natural hazards and climate change, farm environment plans, transport planning, urban development planning and infrastructure asset management. “LiDAR is expensive to capture, which is why only one-quarter of the region is covered to date. This funding is a game changer for our region,” said council science and strategy director, Tracey May. “Through this project, we will be able to provide high-quality digital information

Tracey May, Waikato Regional Council science and strategy director

that will help to inform good land management decisions in both a rural and urban context. “Accurate spatial elevation data is important to enable sound decision making by all local and regional councils, particularly when it comes to implementing changing central government policy in a cost-effective way, as well as resilience planning. “For local councils, sufficient suitable land must be zoned for residential and business growth. LiDAR will be critical in planning for infrastructure in place and for helping us respond to new urban planning standards. The ability to see the shape of the land and understand what’s on top of it is critical to infrastructure providers in making smart decisions for our communities.”

FARMING WITH by Ann van Engelen Nico Mather-Fabrilo is second-in-charge on Puketotara Station west of Huntly, which fattens 10,000 lambs and 1,600 bulls annually.

T

he 24-year-old previously spent four years as a stockman in Raglan and says this was good preparation time. “I am not from a farming background at all; mum works in an office and dad in a brewery. My dad’s parents immigrated here from Italy after the war and used to have a little market garden outside Pukekohe. The heritage is still very strong in my family,” says Nico. “My relatives had a farm and I would help feed out and would help on the wool press when they were shearing and always wanted to work on the land. Dad wanted me to be a vet but I love

farming and did rural sciences in year 10 at school and continued on with level one, two and three NCEA. “I studied at Taratahi and was elected chair of North Waikato Young Farmers last year, and I competed at this year’s regional final competition for Young Farmers. Preparation is important, and I know I went in slightly too relaxed. Emma Dangen won the regional final and obviously did the hard yards. “I got hooked on my perfectionism, and that bugged the heck out of me. I would recommend competing to everyone and don’t take it too seriously if you don’t place.

“The more people who try means better competition. My second job was in Raglan and a good opportunity for learning responsibility with stock, especially handling bulls, dog work and putting structures in place. I was second in charge and between junior and head shepherd. I had to judge situations and make on-the-spot decisions. The boss was great and would point me in the right direction, which has helped me get to where I am now.” Puketotara Station runs beef and sheep, and Nico is in charge of one block on the property. “I ensure the bulls are up to weight and ready for the trucks when necessary. I made sure they were gaining up to a kilo a day, doing 800grams per day in winter when behind wires, and would plan for 650kg live weight and 300kg on the hook. “We were averaging 2.5kg over spring. We have mainly Friesian bulls and about 150 Angus service bulls. Friesians are quick growing and have quite a bit of frame. They are an affordable animal and don’t eat you out of tucker. You make good margins from them compared to a steer because they are such good growers.” Nico’s main role is head shepherd. “Our sheep are composite and come from our sister farm Waipaoa Station. We fatten around 10,000 per year up to 40kg; being 20kg on the hook and run 3,000 at a time. They are off-farm by November before they cut into two teeth and then we use that land to fatten the bulls over the summer. “During spring we locked up 58 hectares of grass and clover and

They get a third of a bail each daily, and we carry them for two seasons. Ultimately they will go off at 650kg. “The sheep have been introduced to raphno — a kale leafy turnip hybrid and they did really well. We have already turned over 2,000 lambs since late January. “They have all been on crops to help keep facial eczema down as they are not grazing low to the ground, but you still need to drench. We have now undersown with grass to bulk it up over the winter. Raphno lasts one year, but

we achieved five grazings so far, and you can also feed cattle on it. I have also built up my own team of six dogs, they are the tools of the trade, and you get judged by your dogs and their capability more than yourself. I did a few Lloyd Smith seminars and got some advice for older guys. The ones I broke in myself have been the best, and I enjoy up to an hour a night training the pups. “I really enjoy sharing my skills with the younger people who are interested in farming and want to stick at. I think I am within five years of being where I want to be and being a manager is my ultimate goal.”

by Ann van Engelen Phil Platje and Joanna Compston are focussing on the organic way of life as they grow pears on their lifestyle property for the farmers' markets.

“M

y dad arrived on a boat from Holland in the late 50s and got into agricultural work and later trained as a builder working around Waikato. He eventually went into real estate until retirement,” says Phil. “During my school years, I worked on horticultural properties during the weekends and holidays. When I married, I brought this property and helped a guy plant these pear trees on his land. Just as we finished, he became unwell and asked me to remove them, so we bought them to help him out and replanted them here.” Phil and Joanna established 800 Doyenne du Comice trees and a few other

types for variety and cross-pollination. “The Comice are green and have a prominent red blush when they are ripe. They are a heritage variety that originates from France and has very good vito nutrients. Originally they were a fad to get into here but the export market is very difficult due to grade standards, and you need to be in the right region. It took approximately eight years to get our first crop, and we have good and bad years due to hail storms, black spot, codling moth, poor market access and other issues.” The couple is in their second year toward organic certification. “We went organic because there is no environmental or chemical impact.

People don’t realise the damage chemicals cause, and we are trying to look after the land and wider community. It is about the holistic approach because chemicals have run off and can persist in the soils. For example, copper reduces the natural fungal-bacterial in soil and is a heavy chemical and very toxic — a lot of people don’t realise you can overuse it and get sick.” Wilson’s disease is associated with copper. Excess copper is stored in various body tissues, particularly the liver, brain and corneas of the eyes. “We plant buffer zones and have natural areas around the orchard as well as a grass ward in the orchard. To avoid heavy machinery damaging the land, we have sheep grazing under the trees. By not using broad-spectrum chemicals, we have a good range of insects that help with pollination as well as beehives from a local beekeeper. Insects don’t eat much, and with organics, observation and knowledge go hand in hand. That is the Steiner approach. It is an ongoing learning curve, and there were some great leaders in the organic growing field. “After the first harvest, you can plan picking on an annual cycle using the historic date. I used to do a starch and sugar test but don’t now. I monitor the picking date, and look at the size and greenness, then cut a few open to see if pips are turning brown or black. If they are totally white, they are too early. If it is easy to pick that is a good indication — it is a learnt skill, including touch and feel.” Pears are different from apples and are picked a little bit green.

Organic growing is a lifestyle Phil recommends to avoid the overuse of chemical input “They mature in the cool store and ripen ready to eat over a week or so when purchased. That is why they are hard at the store. Digestive quality is better once the process is completed. You feel the top for a little bit of give, like an avocado, because they ripen from the inside. That is the complexity of pears. “We only sell at the farmers’ markets at present because of the organic certification process and new food safety act. “When entering organic growing, ensure the variety or cultivar can stand up to the issues with resistance to black spot and other things. Heritage varieties help as they are not as susceptible.

“I chose pears as they are quite big and not as perishable as blueberries or milk. This removes some pressure and which can break you. “Joining an organic farming group means you have support; otherwise you are on your own. These groups offer help, advice, and people have a wealth of knowledge. They are only too happy to share. “If you own a lifestyle block, you can grow organic for yourself and not be certified. “You can also do a close to organic principal like biological farming or permaculture — the less chemicals we use, the better.”

The opportunities that come from the event are endless,” says Jessica. “My family had Friesian bulls, but we didn’t have a stud animal or anything like that when I was young. Growing up I drenched the cattle, got them in and did the everyday farm chores. We are a tight-knit family, and we had around 1,400 acres — it was cool growing

up like that. I went to boarding school at Waterford House because we were quite isolated and we decided to do something different. Boarding school was definitely challenging being away from the family, and I loved going home as often as possible. It made me realise how much I loved the farm.“ Jessica became strongly involved in the Teen Ag club while at school as a way to stay connected to farming. “I have also been involved in stock judging days at A&P shows, Teen Ag days and other minor events. Doing lots of different things has given me a broad spectrum for the future. “I was pretty nervous entering to be a Future Beef Ambassador. The weekend was full of learning, competing and looking after your animal. I had no idea you had to weigh, wash and groom our animal on a Friday. It was a shock as I had never actually lead cattle until the event. I did have an understanding of how to be around animals, which made it easier, but I was an absolute novice. Everyone helps you if you are inexperienced, which was encouraging. The doors opened at 6am the next day to rewash and groom the animals and clean their beds in time for showing. “You are judged on all of these things if you are going for ambassador. Being an ambassador is a way to extend yourself and learn new skills like writing essays, a CV and apply the knowledge you have gained based on your age and you become a leader to other youth. The judges watch how you interact, help others and present yourself in all ways including animal showing.

“As Intermediate Ambassador I won a trip to develop my skills. At this stage, I am still discussing my options, but am looking at visiting different studs to gain a better understanding of how they work.” At present Jessica is studying agri commerce at Lincoln University. “I am studying a BCom Ag because it is a broad degree and will allow me to pursue many options. During the holidays I help run the home farm, and I assist my dad at his job with cows and beef. I also help my grandpa with his bulls and sheep. I also hunt deer with my family. We do this to get meat for the freezer and relax with no phones or anything. I have my own gun and got my gun licence when I was 16 years old. I believe it is important to keep busy with the interests and am a strong believer that nothing gets handed to you. You need to put yourself out there to get to wherever you want to go. “Throwing myself into all these little competitions and shows has helped me to get established. My brother Ashton is also involved in stock shows and gives me a run for my money. Ultimately I want other people to experience the opportunities available. You can come from not knowing anything to becoming a great shower and stock judge. “I will always be working in the farming industry; it is so cool and more girls are getting involved now. At Lincoln, there is a lot of like-minded people who are all heading toward rural careers. I think farming will remain a strong and positive career for many people in the country.”

Honey season a mixed bag The 2017/18 honey season was a mixed bag for New Zealand beekeepers with honey volumes and hive yields up by 35 per cent and 21 per cent respectively over the 2016/17 season. Average honey prices were lower than the previous year for most honey types apart from monofloral manuka honey, as outlined in this year’s Ministry for Primary Industries 2018 Apiculture Monitoring Programme Report. “The softening in prices seen in the 2017/18 year has come after more than 10 years of increasing value for the majority of all New Zealand honey on the international market,” says chief executive of Apiculture New Zealand, Karin Kos. “Unfortunately, we are continuing to see falling prices and sluggish sales during the 2018/19 year as we compete with global honey that typically sells for lower rates than our beekeepers have received over the last four to five seasons. The market downturn has had a significant impact on the profitability of many beekeeping businesses as a result.” While total registered hive numbers are up 11 per cent, and registered beekeeping enterprises are up nine per cent, Ms Kos says it is unlikely this growth, particularly in the commercial sector, will continue given current market conditions. “We can expect to see some rationalisation during the next year

Karin Kos, Apiculture New Zealand chief executive

as beekeepers consider their options in this tough market. The report highlighted the increased demand for pollination services with the expansion in several horticulture sectors including kiwifruit, apples, avocados, stonefruit and blueberries. “The growth of pollination services is good news for our industry, as it does provide another source of income for beekeepers.” While the market has been challenging, honey export sales continued to rise with a six per cent increase in 2017/18 to $348 million, driven by both higher export volumes and prices, with export volumes to the United States of America rising sharply

to eclipse China as the largest market. “There has been an increasing interest in the United States as a relatively new and growing market, particularly for New Zealand manuka honey, and this is reflected in the increased sales and retail presence there. “While current conditions were tough for many beekeepers, global demand for natural health and wellness products continues to grow. “New Zealand honey is well positioned to take advantage of that growth. As an industry, we have work to do in how we can grow the value of all our New Zealand native and pastoral monofloral honey and bee products, and that is a priority for our members.”

LOW COST SYSTEM WITH PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT This unique ultra-low application depth and ultra-low rate application system is based on applying farm dairy effluent at levels that fall well below pasture uptake. The system starts with a unique patented weeping wall encased in a concrete lined bunker. The weeping wall removes the solids and allows the liquid to flow into a pump chamber. Green water is then pumped to a tank for recycling. External yarding can then be automatically cleaned with greenwater via floodwash or backing gate nozzles, effectively cleaning yards without the use of fresh water. This reduces the water take from the standard 50 to 70lt/cow to 20 to 25lt/cow. The Clean Green Effluent System’s patented automated distribution system allows liquid to be dispersed over large areas at a super low rate of 1/4mm application depth. Effluent can be safely dispersed nearly every day of the year meaning there is no nitrogen leaching and the pasture retains all nutrients provided, thus increasing pasture growth by up to 35%.

Recent independent scientific tests have indicated that with this system a lower level of nitrate leaching can be achieved even in the winter; better than most other systems can achieve during the summer months. Due to the 1/4mm application depth and being able to distribute all year round, no mega ponds need to be constructed and therefore minimal storage is now required. The Clean Green Effluent System utilises as little as two 30,000 litre water tanks to provide storage for greenwash and effluent dispersed. As an advantage, the water tanks are guaranteed not to leak & have no rainwater catchment. Rainwater catchment in mega ponds equates to doubling the amount of effluent being stored and having to be dispersed by pump to land. Given the current amount of focus on New Zealand’s primary industry needing to improve its reputation, the Clean Green Effluent System is the obvious option for farmers and industry to adopt, ensuring our dairy industry continues to thrive; we can remove dairying as an easy scapegoat for the state of our waterways.

Benefits of the system • Small foot print • No storage ponds • Fully automated • 0.25mm application/24hrs • Low man hours to maintain • Low running costs • 60% fresh water savings • Fully patented system

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

Winning with wire

Hamilton artist Gaye Jurisich took out top honours in the 2019 Fieldays No 8 Wire National Art Award with her piece labelled Snare. The Fieldays No 8 Wire National Art Awards are hosted and coordinated by Waikato Museum, partnered by Farmlands cooperative and supported by the New Zealand National Fieldays Society. This year’s judge, associate professor Linda Tyler has taught art history at Canterbury, Victoria, Waikato and Auckland universities, and at Unitec and Otago Polytechnic. She has been an art curator at Waikato Museum, the Hocken Library and Gus Fisher Gallery and is now convenor of Museums and Cultural Heritage at the University of Auckland. “Often with sculpture, people think that it’s fine to have something wall mounted. The whole attraction of that piece was the fact that it was sprouting out of the walls and using the floors as well, so it was a real installation,” said Ms Tyler. “Gaye’s sculpture really captured the energy of the material well. Number eight wire is really strong stuff, and when it is coiled it has got all that springing energy. It really did express the quality and energy that is inherent

in number eight wire.” Snare was one of 25 artworks created by 23 artists on display at ArtsPost Galleries and Shop showcasing the value, versatility and symbolism of number eight wire. New Zealand National Fieldays Society president Peter Carr awarded his President’s Choice to Dagmar Elliot of Te Awamutu for her piece The No 8 Pataka. “This piece really symbolised food, farming and Fieldays. The fact that the roof of the little house was made from rusty-looking number eight wire paid great homage to the material’s durability showing that it will last forever,” said Mr Carr. Second place went to Bev Goodwin and Jeff Thomson of Auckland for their creation Re-coil using shapes making a heavy material seem light and buoyant. Receiving third place, Jasmine Clark’s Kupenga involved weaving the wire, making it seem like a delicate natural fibre rather than a strong metal. The reference is to the ingenuity of traditional fishing methods within the Maori culture. “I am in awe of how people can manipulate it and do things

with it that are against its nature; it is really hard stuff to move around. There is a reason it is ubiquitous in fencing, and that is because it is so tough,” said judge Tyler. “I think one of the nice things about bringing number eight wire indoors and working with it sculpturally is that it becomes like drawing in space because the wire itself is a perfect

line. When you shape the wire, you can capture light and cast shadow and do all sorts of extraordinary things with it once it is indoors when you can exploit the intention of it as something to draw with.” The No 8 Wire National Art Award exhibition will run at the ArtsPost Galleries and Shop from May 11 through to June 9.

How much better can I be? by John Arts, Abundant Health

(Part two) Despondency is a common obstacle to healing. The nagging thought that you will not be able to improve can affect our ability to make decisions. After speaking to so many people, you get the feeling that some people are just stuck in their problem. However, my client files are full of stories from people who had the courage to try something different. Last year I helped someone really troubled by joint pain in her hands, feet and hips. That had restricted her to the point that simple things like gardening were a challenge. To make it worst she had a lot of pain at night affecting the quality of sleep. She had been taking a traditional high glucosamine joint product with little result. She had been doing lots of good things such as a diet high in omega-3. While I made further dietary suggestions, most of the benefit came from adding a high chondroitin supplement. A therapeutic level of high-grade chondroitin is the single most important measure to improve comfort with arthritic joints. In

Europe medical doctors regularly prescribe chondroitin. We started at 1,600mg of highgrade chondroitin, which also had 1600mg of glucosamine and 400mg of high-grade curcumin (from turmeric). After only a few months she had much less pain both in the daytime and at night and was able to enjoy gardening and other things that had become difficult. I see healing as a three-step process. The first is to gather relevant information and an honest appraisal of the situation. We then create an action plan based on healthy eating, appropriate supplements and lifestyle changes. The third is re-evaluation to make sure that the client is getting the best possible results. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. The beauty of heavy by Ann van Engelen Mahutonga Stud owner Debra Garner breeds heavy horses for both work, pleasure and anything in between.

“M

ahutonga is the Maori name for the Southern Cross, which in Latin is Crux, which means turning point. At that time, we chose the name to signify new beginnings,” says Deb. “I had always had an affiliation with Clydesdales, in younger days hunting, showing and eventing some wonderful Clydesdale crosses that were amazing jumpers with level heads and sensible natures. “We purchased our first Clydesdale in 2009 and decided that would be the direction we went with the stud. In 2015 we downsized from 60 acres to 20, got rid of the cows and committed fully to the horses. Around that time, we had an older Clydesdale stallion, who is now 24

years old, and had to make a decision about his replacement. In 2017 we purchased a Drum Horse stallion from the States. I had seen him on YouTube, and after years of passive stalking, we were given the opportunity to bring him out to New Zealand. “The Drum Horse is a relatively newly recognised breed and was named for the job it does in the Queen’s military. They literally carried the big kettle drums that signified when battle began and ended and in recent times the ceremonial parades. They quickly became desirable as sensible riding and working horses due to their temperament and ability to remain calm in busy situations.” In the late 1990s, the International Drum Horse Society was formed. set a Breed Standard and registrar with the aim to take the best parts from Clydesdale, Gypsy and Shire to make a new breed, rather than create types within existing breeds. They fill the niche demand for a tall, heavy riding horse, focussing on breeding for athleticism, agility and performance ability for all ridden disciplines. “At 17.1 hands high, our Drum Horse stallion, Alexander the Great, has been all of that and more. An amazing stallion, he trail rides, can draft a cow, pull a gig or sledge and is currently training at level two to three in dressage with Murray Ritchies from Kaipaki Horsemanship — who is doing a brilliant job. We have had a fantastic first season and had three Drum Horse foals last year by Xander. Our babies are six months old now, and all are expected to reach premium Drum Horse status of 16 hands high plus well before seven years old. Not all Drum horses reach premium status. “We have eight mares and one stallion on 20 acres and are mainly grass-based. We cut haylage each year and feed out when required. Thankfully the mares are relatively low maintenance, they are like Labradors though and will let you know if you are late with dinner. I break feed over winter to maintain their weight and have a Jenny Craig paddock for when they get too big. There is an old saying ‘no foot no horse’ so we have a farrier visit every six weeks to do hooves and a very good veterinary clinic on speed dial. It is always better to avoid an issue than try and fix one.” Deb is an active member of the Waikato Heavy Horse Association, which was established in 1979 with the aim to preserve and uphold the heavy horse traditions of the past.

RD 4 Cambridge Heavy horses of all types are versatile and still used today on farms and in shows

“The ‘old boys’ average age 70 years old and they help run our field days, volunteer to support members starting, work their horses in harness and share their skills, with anyone willing to learn. We host harness days, ploughing, logging, riding, and participate in the vintage displays around the area. Most years we do a haymaking day where we cut, turn, row and stack it the oldfashioned way. “There has been a real resurgence with heavy horses recently, mainly as riding horses, possibly because their versatility is a real advantage. These days everyone is short of time, maybe it is better to have one horse to do

everything with rather than two or three that specialise in different things. “The older gentlemen are committed to keeping the traditional methods alive and helping others learn. We are very grateful for what they are sharing because once they have gone, their knowledge may be gone forever — we need to learn from them now. It is not easy, in fact, it is proper hard work. I take my hat off to those who farmed with horses in the past. “We really have no idea how easy we have it these days. Working the horses looks easy, it really does, but it’s not. It is hard, proper hard, but so, so satisfying.”

While demand for our healthy food is high, challenges are not insignificant as we battle for growing land, access to water, and enough people to keep us growing. As we look at Our Food Future, the theme of the 2019 Horticulture Conference, we need to focus on solutions and some of them need to be found fast. Some solutions will come from better collaboration, and others will come from being creators and early adopters of science, technology and innovation. One thing we know for sure, we need to be able to grow food not only for an increasing New Zealand population, but also for an increasing worldwide population. Our food needs to be safe, healthy, environmentally sustainable and affordable.

THE CHALLENGE IS BIG, SO WE HAVE A VENUE TO MATCH! In 2019 our conference will be at the impressive Mystery Creek site just outside Hamilton, which is about 113 hectares. We have an exciting programme lined up which includes hands-on demonstrations of futuristic ideas, exhibits including large machinery for you to have a look around, a cooking demonstration involving plant based proteins and field trip visits to Zealong Tea, Hill Laboratories and Visy packaging. We’re also planning a tractor pull competition if you just want to come along on the Friday for a bit of fun!

We want you to come to our conference to join the big conversations; to see and hear about what is being done to enable and enhance our food future; and to be an active part of that future.

Bring your campervan! Campervans are welcome onsite at Mystery Creek. Power connections are available as well as toilets and shower facilities. There is no cost to bring your campervan.

BACK or NECK PAIN? Real Hope For Long Term Sufferers

After twelve years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now established a long term track record with thousands of people throughout New Zealand. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. To him surgery was never an option as long as he still could walk, there was hope. “While on an overseas trip I discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups for the first time, when I tried it, the pain completely disappeared and I was pain free for about 30 minutes. I never would have believed it would fix me completely as specialists had told me it was irreversible, but I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some welcome relief”. To my surprise the more I used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months the pain was completely gone, after spending large amounts of money on everything I could find I finally had found something that worked and it was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

Once I was sure it really worked I decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand to help spread awareness of the one thing that truly helped me. Over the years I have helped tens of thousands of people in New Zealand get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability

The results from what inversion does is nothing short of miraculous in areas we never thought possible, I believe there is a place for these in every single home regardless of if you have back issues or not. We have introduced them into a number of schools which are using them for their special needs children, the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent. What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. I would not have believed the results had I not tried it for myself, and I would still be suffering to this day. This is why we travel the country showing people and letting them see for themselves how great it is and how life can be once your pain free again

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

Helisika recently established DroneZup, a company dedicated to supplying drones of various fluid capacity as a new way of accessing hard-to-reach areas for spraying and mapping. “We provide a high standard of equipment for a wide range of operations, and our pilots have more than 20,000hrs helicopter flying experience,” says company CEO Jaz Gribble. “AgDrones are an alternative method to helicopters for various situations including sensitive areas on farms. With the drones, we can get a lot closer to our target quietly, so it made sense to adopt the drone as a new, efficient tool.” The drones are used for surveying, spraying regeneration areas and sensitive boundaries and in the aquaculture industry for feeding salmon at salmon farms. The sizes available are 10, 15 and 20-litre fluid capacities and they are also used for applying product to moss and mould on roofs, sheds and other buildings. “Drone use is perfect for moderate to steep blocks that are inaccessible by ground trucks. If you have ragwort, thistle, or gorse and your land is wet, the drone can quietly spray without messing up your paddocks. We crop count and scan for bugs and diseases, which in

Easy care low chemical input sheep

The Fernleaf Ram story is one of a pioneer farmer and selective breeding to develop stock with qualities valued by others. In 1924 Houlton Forlong set about developing Fernleaf farm by clearing the land that the sawmills had left in their wake. He established a stud Romney flock in 1934 with 35 ewes and seven ewe lambs. Melvin Forlong is now the third generation running the stud with 840 stud ewes run at a very high stocking rate. “We became a pioneer of performance recording 40 years ago, starting off with Sheeplan and then with SIL. Around the year 2000, we began breeding rams based on resistance to parasites. We started extending the intervals between

drenches and then intense selection for worm resistance to reduce drenching and dagging work. We did this by collecting faeces samples and testing for worm eggs and breeding with low worm egg count rams. “Fernleaf’s speciality is breeding rams with improving resistance to internal parasites such as worms and facial eczema, as well as reducing dags. These are sheep our clients are pleased to own. We are minimal chemical input, and our animals are perfect for lifestyle block owners who want easy care, low maintenance sheep, and we sell a lot of ewes and ewe lambs, plus of course,

rams to them as they are easy care with less drenching, less dagging. “Along with many fellow farmers, we foresaw that worm resistance to drenches was going to become a key issue including parasites’ resistance to drenches and the sheep’s own resistance to parasites. In addition, resistance has high heritability, and we put enormous selection pressure on structural soundness with special attention on sound feet, and we guarantee the feet of our rams for 12 months.” The breeding programme’s net result is fewer dags, less work for the farmer, healthier stock and greater profitability. “We worked alongside Dr Clive Dalton. Other breeding qualities of our flock include high fertility, growth rate and ewe performance-mothering ability Melvin Forlong with his undrenched eight-month-old ram and easy care, good quality lambs at almost 60kg in weight fleece weight and structural soundness including healthy feet. Turtle as a pest

27

The red-eared slider turtle that is readily available in New Zealand has been listed by the Invasive Species Specialist Group as one of the world’s 100 worst invasive species. The freshwater turtle is native to southern parts of the United States and is sold as juveniles at around 50mm long. The shell can grow up to 350mm long. The turtles are omnivorous, long-lived and tolerate a range of environmental conditions. Given their omnivorous diet, in the wild, they could adversely impact aquatic plants, insects, eels, small fish species and ground-nesting birds. They can survive in the wild in a wide range of aquatic habitats, including man-made drains and canals, natural wetlands, rivers, lakes, ponds and brackish estuarine waters. Wild populations become established predominantly by people releasing pet turtles when they outgrow their tanks or outlive their appeal, and there is potential for them to become a serious problem. Red-eared slider turtles can survive in the wild in the Waikato region. Although the current climate is considered unsuitable for their reproduction, climate change may provide sufficient warmth for this to occur and they could potentially breed in some of the region’s aquatic geothermal areas.

Waikato Regional Council may undertake direct control of wild redeared slider turtles and residents are encouraged to report any sightings of the turtles on their properties to the council. It is an offence under the Biosecurity Act 1993 to knowingly release a red-eared slider turtle into the environment. It is also an offence to sell the turtles from the wild. These turtles should only be sold by pet shops and should be kept securely by pet owners and not released elsewhere. If you have an unwanted pet red-eared slider turtle, do not release it into the wild. Contact your local pet shop or SPCA in the hope they may rehome it. Turtles are often sighted sunning themselves on banks or stones or swimming in still watercourses. If you see any red-eared slider turtles in the wild, note the exact location of the sighting and report it to Waikato Regional Council. For advice and additional information on control methods, call our animal pest staff on freephone 0800 BIOSEC (0800 246 732).

Enjoy passive returns from Ingham’s portfolio syndication A property syndicate is a direct property investment where a number of investors pool their capital to purchase real estate, which forms the syndicate or scheme.

I

nvestment in proportionate ownership schemes, or syndications, can be an effective and affordable way to participate in the commercial property market and enjoy the returns from real estate assets without the daily burdens and commitment of property management. Syndication is a passive form of property ownership, most commonly in office, industrial or retail properties that are managed by a professional manager. The main advantage of property syndicates is that they allow smaller investors to participate in higher yielding commercial property investments that are often only available to wealthier individuals or institutional investors. In recent years cash returns available from commercial property have also generally been higher than bank term deposits and rental from residential property investments. Most syndicates have a minimum investment requirement, which can range from $10,000 to $100,000 plus.

8

Once the property has been purchased, the manager becomes responsible for day to day management of the asset, accounting, and distributing income to investors. Most syndicates do not have a termination date and continue until a majority of investors vote in favour of winding them up. This means it can be harder to exit a syndicate than it can be for other investments. However, there is often a secondary market allowing the sale and purchase of syndicate investments, subject to buyer demand. New Zealand property syndicator, Silverfin Capital Limited, has rapidly emerged as a key player in the sector, notching up $280 million of property under management in little over two and a half years. Working with partner agency Colliers International, the Auckland-based company has added four new schemes and an underwrite fund in the last 12 months. All five schemes were fully subscribed, with the last three schemes being significantly

oversubscribed, demonstrating increasing investor demand for Silverfin’s schemes. Silverfin has now set itself the ambitious goal of growing its portfolio to $1 billion within the next five years. Miles Brown, Silverfin’s Chief Executive Officer, says the challenge is to balance that growth with the company’s investorfirst culture. “While we’ve set ourselves an aspirational growth target, we remain committed to being as accessible as ever. We’ll do everything we can to ensure our door is always open to our trusted community of investors.” Brown says Silverfin brings a distinctive offer to the investment community. “We provide a property specific investment alternative. Rather than investing in a company or diversified fund, our investors can hand pick their assets by investing in a specific property or a small portfolio of related properties. Silverfin’s next scheme, which is due to come to the market in June 2019, will consist a portfolio of six industrial/ agricultural properties leased to Inghams

“Our schemes aim to offer solid, steady returns. Investors are paid monthly, with schemes typically targeting a pre-tax cash return of 7.5 to 9.0 per cent per annum.” Enterprises (NZ) Pty Limited, on a 25year lease term, which expires in 2039. The target distribution will be 8.25 per cent per annum, pre-tax. Brown says that Silverfin are particularly excited by this scheme and expect investors to find the strong tenant covenant and long lease term an attractive proposition. No money is currently being sought, and interests cannot currently be applied for. If the offer is made, it will be made in accordance with the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013.

Africa is Karoma’s homeland, and he prides himself on sharing his knowledge and experience through these unique tours. The tours give guests the opportunity to see the ‘big five’ of the animal world — something many people dream of. “Unlike the big tour operators, Karoma has an amazing way of connecting with each passenger,” says Tasha. “Our itineraries are specifically tailored to suit each group, with lots of fun surprises along the way. Each destination puts you face to face with diverse cultures, jaw-dropping landscapes and fascinating histories.” From the ‘big five’ to the tribespeople, local economies, his childhood, history and the environment, Karoma helps visitors come away with a deeper understanding of this amazing continent. The fully serviced 28 days camping safaris are ideal for all ages, including the seasoned ‘40 plus’ travellers. “We have had an 87-year-old join our tour, and they thoroughly enjoyed the adventure. Travelling with us allows you to encounter ‘the real Africa’, in a fun and safe way. You will mingle with local people on the Explore East Africa safari and visit the wildlife conservancy where Karoma grew up. We walk amongst the plain game such as zebra and giraffe.

Rest assured we follow strict routines to keep you healthy and happy. “There are no hidden extras because you talk directly with us, your tour guides. We will answer your questions and be fully transparent with costs, and all optional extras are clearly outlined. “We take a lot of mature travellers, this is their dream holiday, and most say it exceeds their expectations. For Karoma it is taking people through his homeland and what Tash Kimani with zebra on one of the African Touch tours he calls ‘his Africa’. It is not the unsafe version the media so go again. INSPIRED TO FLY BY ANN VAN ENGELEN NZI Rural Womens’ business awards — Rural Champion winner Fly My Sky owners Robyn and Keith McKenzie were living in a caravan by a river on the west coast in the early 1970s after returning from Australia where Keith gained his helicopter pilots’ licence.

T

he company won the award with Robyn being a director of the business. “Australia was the nearest place for a New Zealander to train to be a helicopter pilot and the west coast was the only job Keith could get in New Zealand,” says Robyn. “He was working on venison recovery with Helicopters NZ, a Nelson-based company. Other helicopter operations were owned by the pilots, and that inspired us to do the same.” In 1980 Keith was chief pilot for James Aviation, and the company decided to close their helicopter base in Taumarunui, so the couple purchased it. “The opportunity was rare, and we borrowed almost all the money. We had

two young children and whilst Keith flew I canvassed for helicopter work. We managed to pay the loan back in five years.” The McKenzies have since provided transport services, rescue missions and a variety of services for people in rural situations. “We opened a twice a day, rural scheduled flight service between Auckland and Whangarei days before Fly My Sky was a winner at the awards. The award has reinforced the rural substance of our brand,” says Robyn. “For Keith one of the most memorable missions was helping a police officer capture a mass murderer in hilly mountainous terrain, which he knew like the back of his hand.

“They both were aware of the unpredictable mental state of the person but armed with intense local knowledge, helicopter skills learnt through mustering cattle around trees in Australia, plus the power of the Hughes 500D helicopter, they captured the offender before more tragedy occurred.” Keith was awarded a QSM for his assistance to police and community. They have completed many other missions including going to a young boy who had a fatal horse accident. Robyn says such memories highlight the perils of remote living. Keith has more than 23,000 hours rural flying experience and was an instructor on planes and helicopters. “His has amazing stories from all over New Zealand. He has helped build the ski lifts on Ruapehu and the Remarkables. He is used to different weather conditions and going from tarmac to grass landing strips. He had retired but has returned to teach the younger pilots.“ Flying to Great Barrier Island is also a regular service, and takes 30 minutes from Auckland. “People on Great Barrier Island have been attending Rural Women’s Network for some 70 years and participate in things like educational programmes for children and knitting beanies for babies. They have speakers from all over the world visit, and it is awesome to fly to the island daily and hear encouraging stories. “The barrier is like going overseas, and the beautiful beaches are very invigorating with clear water.

“It is a nice place for farmers to have a retreat — they go fishing and walk the beaches or up Mt Hobson. The landscape is always changing, and you can book a boat tour. The wildlife is wonderful including the brown duck, which is endangered. “Sixty-five per cent of the island is conservation estate, and they are regenerating the kauri trees as the original were cut down to make boats in the 1920s. “Because we are a lifestyle company we sold the helicopter and now have four planes. Winning the rural women award was really encouraging and validating for what we do. I have met some amazing people, and it is exciting to be a part of the organisation. I am so busy at work it is a challenge to get out, and it is the same for women in farming —

you can become isolated, and I firmly believe rural women has an amazing support network. “We want to build a quick and efficient service to Whangarei as it is handy for Northland residents. We fly on charter to other areas across the country and can land at the small community airfields as well as the provincial airports. If there is a group of nine, it spreads the costs and sometimes makes sense in efficiency and time to get to a city, another area or international flight from Auckland. The future is encouraging, and these services help farmers to be able to attend seminars and even get away for a night. It is a privilege to be a part of all that goes on around the countryside of New Zealand. “Every part of what we do helps others in one way or another.”

The Provincial Growth Fund is partnering with Horticulture New Zealand to maximise the number of New Zealanders employed by the sector and ensure the sustainability of horticultural growth. “The PGF will invest $1.1 million in six horticulture career coordinators up and down the country to tackle the labour supply issues facing the horticulture sector,” said Regional Economic Development minister Shane Jones. “In Northland, PGF investment will support an established Horticultural Careers Progression manager for an additional 12 months. This person coordinates information about local labour demand and supply and maintains strong relationships with employers and regional partners, such as Northland Inc, local schools, relevant agencies and other training providers.” To build on early success in Northland, the PGF will invest to establish a further five horticulture and viticulture careers coordinators who will work throughout the Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Upper South Island, Otago and Manawatu regions to help match potential workers with potential employers. “Horticulture is New Zealand’s fourth largest primary industry — worth more than $5.6 billion to our economy in 2017. People capability has been highlighted as a clear focus for the industry. I am pleased the PGF is able to partner with HortNZ, which

www.wisproducts.co.nz

represents 5,000 commercial fruit and vegetable growers who employ more than 60,000 workers. “Horticulture is a priority sector for the Provincial Growth Fund, but there is no point trying to expand the prospects of this industry if we don’t have people to fill the jobs we are creating. “Through our investment, we expect to see a marked improvement in the amount of sustainable employment opportunities for domestic workers to meet our goal of having a fit-forpurpose workforce that meets industry standards. At the moment, the industry has about 50 apprentices a year. This project aims to double that. A move that is well supported by the sector, local and central government and regional economic agencies. “The regions involved in this project have an over-representation of people not in employment, education or training and Maori. A major focus for Horticulture NZ will be engaging with schools and bridging the gap from education to employment. We have an opportunity to hook into this untapped pipeline and benefit our young people, our regions and a sector, which has a proud and prosperous history in New Zealand.”

Keep things in mint condition When you really need your machines to work. When you have no use for downtime — then buy what the military and aviation industry has for years. Simply the very best lubricant and maintenance product available. CorrosionX lubricates some three times better than good engine oil. It will keep connectors, switches, plugs, fuse boxes and instrumentation in mint condition and stop corrosion on impact. Only one litre of CorrosionX coats 94 square metres — with full efficiency at a four-micron thickness, it doesn’t attract dust! It’s tested to max 39.000-volt dielectric strength, so if your electrics and electronics struggle with water ingress or condensation gets your vacuum pump at the milking shed, or the starter solenoid plays up, a quick spray from the red can solve the problem. CorrosionX lasts for many months, never dries or evaporates making it cheaper in the long run than the kerosenebased products.

CorrosionX is NZ MPI approved to class C11, same as lanolin. The product is not flammable, does not affect rubber, neoprene, monofilament, plastics, anodising, varnish or paint. A litre fogged from a kero gun can mothball a maizer in 30 minutes — corrosion protection lasting until the next season. Its creamy brother CorrosionX Heavy Duty is the unsurpassed lubricant for threepoint linkages, Teleflex cables, shed hinges, rotary milking platforms, leaf springs and lock bolts. CX Heavy Duty is the perfect long-term rust protection in rafters, chassis and machinery, an excellent assembly compound, preventing future oxidisation and electrolysis. 100 IT’S NOT A TARGET The polyethylene UV resistant netting is placed over a standard polythene sheet and is held down along the seams and edges using Secure Gravel bags. These bags are made from the same material and are filled with recommended river pebble. The dense, strong nature of the knitted cover places it close to the polythene’s surface, reducing lift and minimising unwanted air intrusion, which damages silage quality. The myth of the need for tyres is proven false as the Secure Cover gravel bags offer a flexible alternative to tyres; being easily filled with river pebble. They are tied off with supplied UV treated cable ties. New Zealand’s high UV levels and wind can reduce the longevity of plastic based products, and the Secure Covers system comes with a UV stability guarantee. Bird and rodent damage is also minimised, protecting valuable maize and grass silage. Pukekos are a particular nuisance when plastic is used.

The dense, tough polyethylene of the Secure Covers is impossible for pukekos and pests to penetrate. While some farmers may prefer to continue using the tyres they have accumulated over the years, it is important farmers keep in mind other issues such a Hardware disease, that can be harming your stock. raham grows, shows and hybridises daffodils and has collected certain varieties from around the world. He is also a judge of the flower at both national and international shows. Ian Riddell joined Clandon Daffodils in 1991. He and his wife Marian purchased the business in 2016 and Graham remains an integral part of the company. “His dedication and passion to improving the flower mean there are now more than 1,000 varieties grown on our property,” says Ian. “We lease a further seven acres to keep up with demand. We have a single

version of Erlicheer available now but our flower picking season generally starts around mid-June and continues to October — peak harvesting is around Daffodil Day. “Whilst we try to pick all the flowers we can for market by late spring; there is a wonderful display of all sorts of colours from the ones that didn’t make it for sale. “We take our blooms to the Mount Wellington flower market in Auckland. It is interesting to see what varieties the other daffodil growers have available there as well. There are people who sell bulbs as their main source of income Ian Riddell annually produces up to 18,000 bunches of daffodils for Daffodil Day to support the New Zealand Cancer Society

and do the flowers on the side. We do flowers as our priority, and the bulbs help us keep financial off season. “The blooms are picked in bunches of 10 and with as long as stems as possible. We are constantly working toward making different varieties flower earlier than usual, which can take quite an effort. We now have around 160 commercial varieties and one trend over the past few years is the noticeable demand for double daffodils, which look like a rose. We would be one of the biggest producers of double daffodils in New Zealand and have them on the market for 11 to 12 weeks. The florists particularly like them for bouquets.” Clandons Daffodils are proud to support the Waikato Cancer Society with their fundraising efforts annually producing 15–18,000 bunches for them. “This is a stressful time of year because if the weather doesn’t go right, we don’t have enough flowers, but the reward of helping the people to get rid of cancer is important to us. “The Cancer Society also has the incredible lodge in Hamilton where people who live too far out of town can stay for their treatment. Some of the money raised from selling the daffodils helps fund the lodge.” Once October passes and the daffodils are no longer flowering, the focus is placed on weed control and bulb care. “We dig the bulbs from November onwards and store them. Around February/March they are hot water treated. We put them into a special

Specialising in different varieties is thanks to Graham’s ability to hybridise and bring new flowers to our block. At present we are focussing on producing a range of colours and types to be available throughout the whole flowering season. The wet 2017 affected production last year due to not enough sunlight, and too much rain, but this year is looking very promising for us. Like all farming, there are good and bad years. “Having Graham as my mentor has been an incredible opportunity. He mixes with the world’s best daffodil breeders

and has so much knowledge to share. We enjoy doing what we do. You have to otherwise during those hard years you would give up. “I am still absolutely amazed how a boring, even ugly looking bulb, can produce such a beautiful looking flower. Every year they pop through the ground and present a wonderful looking flower. I think it is in the realm of the miraculous. What do they say — ‘where there is design, there is a designer’. “We love the fact that our flowers are a blessing to people and when they buy our blooms, they are often given away to bless other people.”

Reminder for duck hunters

Federated Farmers reminds duck hunters heading out for the season that access to farms is a privilege. Duck shooting season is a big deal in rural New Zealand, with 40,000 annual participants across the country. Hunters will pay their money to Fish and Game for a duck shooting licence, but access is usually reliant on the goodwill of local farmers. Many hunters find themselves beside a wetland built and maintained on private farmland with many of these arrangements several generations old, established on a handshake. “Access on to farms comes with responsibilities for both hunter and farmer. Farms are businesses, homes

and places of recreation, and we ask that people recognise this when they head out for a shot,’’ says Federated Farmers environment spokesperson Chris Allen. Health and safety around firearms, water and vehicles remain the number one consideration, but there are other things for hunters to think about as well. “Biosecurity is essential on farms, and with serious new threats such as Mycoplasma bovis, hunters need to ask landowners about any special requirements, particularly when driving

Methane reduction unrealistic Deer Industry New Zealand is disappointed by the government’s announced emissions reduction targets for agriculture. “Under current conditions, these targets would result in significant reductions in stock numbers. says chair of Deer Industry New Zealand, Dr Ian Walker. “Even if tools and technologies were available to reduce methane and nitrous oxide in the future, the level of reduction would effectively mean that the agriculture sector was being asked not just to cease its own contribution to global warming, but also offset the contribution of other sectors. “The deer industry as part of the pastoral sector is prepared to play its part in climate change mitigation. “We do not deny human-induced climate change nor our responsibility to mitigate. “The pastoral sector is willing to target net zero global warming impact from agricultural gasses, but the targets for methane announced by the government go beyond net zero global warming impact. DINZ cannot support these targets. “The rationale for methane to be reduced by anything between 24 per cent and 47 per cent by 2050 has not been made clear to us. We can only assume that the government expects agriculture to make ‘headroom’ for other sectors to continue emitting.

Dr Walker says this is unfair for the sector, but also a bad choice for New Zealand because in the absence of new mitigation technology a 47 per cent reduction in agricultural methane emissions will require a 47 per cent reduction in pastoral farming outputs. That could reduce rural employment and export revenues from meat, milk and fibre by half, or about $12 billion a year. “The government has expressed no plan for how this employment and export revenue could be replaced and New Zealanders’ living standards maintained. Reducing agricultural methane emissions is a temporary solution; it buys time but does not address the fundamental cause of climate change, which is the release of fossil carbon into the atmosphere. “The pastoral sector, including DINZ, will continue to support research on agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation options and development of a robust framework to enable farms to transition to lower emissions. DINZ considers there is little sense in sacrificing New Zealand’s economic backbone when all this does, is delay the need for New Zealand and all other countries to address the fundamental issues of fossil fuel emissions.

A simple solution It’s common practice to forget about your septic system until suddenly you have nasty odours, leash line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, or gurgling toilets. By the time things go wrong, your septic system is already a serious health and safety risk. Treatment at this stage is time-consuming and costly. You could either wait a month until the problem resolves itself and avoid using your septic tank altogether (impractical) or excavate your entire system and relocate it — an expensive and bothersome process. What you could do to avoid all of these problems altogether is by pouring one litre of Septi-Cure down the toilet bowl every six months. Septi-Cure is designed to keep your system running at top efficiency by reducing solids and scums and clearing slimes and blockages. It is a concentrated mixture of specially selected, naturally occurring, harmless microorganisms, which multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank, they go to work straight away, digesting waste and allowing your system to operate at maximum efficiency. As these microorganisms

progress down to your irrigation field, they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. Thus you have reduced the risks of contaminating groundwater and the environment, as well as infection to your family.

Genesis reimagines energy

On Rural Roads

For Dairy is a new Genesis product tailored for and designed with dairy farmers to help save on their milking shed electricity bill.

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT’S AROUND THE CORNER

NATURAL SPREADERS

LTD

Partnering exclusively with Farm Source, dairy farmers will be offered an electricity plan created specifically for their unique energy use. “For Dairy recognises that the way dairy farmers use electricity is far from standard and with this product could ultimately result in savings of between 5 and 25 per cent off their milking shed electricity bill,” says Genesis executive general manager, James Magill. “We know the milking shed is central to a dairy farming business and that electricity it uses is at offpeak and shoulder times of the day, when everyone else is sleeping or at work. Essentially, we are rewarding farmers for using energy when no one else is. “We have created a tool to show exactly how For Dairy works and bring its benefits to life for dairy farmers. It graphs and forecasts their electricity use and savings, taking into consideration seasonal variations and usage patterns during a typical milking day on the farm. “At Genesis, we want to do everything we can to help businesses be more successful, and we’re constantly looking at ways we can advance technology in the energy sector.” Fonterra Farm Source Group director, Richard Allen, says energy represents a significant cost to farmers.

WE PUMP EFFLUENT, STIR & DESLUDGE TO WAIKATO ENVIRONMENT SPECIFICATIONS

“Farm Source is committed to helping lower on-farm costs, and we’ve been focussed on finding the best deal for our farmers so it’s great to have Genesis on board and investing in innovations to enable this.” Genesis will also give

dairy farmers greater transparency by splitting out the network charges from the energy charges. For more information head to genesisenergy.co.nz/fordairy.

Requesting critical changes New Zealand’s sheep and beef sector is concerned over the proposed treatment of methane and targets in the Zero Carbon bill and is calling for critical changes to the bill. Beef + Lamb NZ believe the proposed methane reduction targets of between 24–47 per cent by 2050 significantly exceed both New Zealand and global scientific advice, and the government is asking more of agriculture than fossil fuel emitters elsewhere in the economy. “New Zealand’s sheep and beef sector is committed to playing its part in addressing climate change and acknowledges that in some areas the government has followed scientific advice, such as the split gas approach and proposed ambitious net zero target for nitrous oxide,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s chairman and Southland sheep and beef farmer Andrew Morrison. “Sheep and beef emissions have already reduced by 30 per cent since 1990, helping meet New Zealand’s

Dairy Farm

EFFLUENT POND LINERS

climate change challenge and we accept we still have work to do. New Zealand needs a robust science-based and fair approach when setting targets for an issue, which will affect future generations. It is unreasonable to ask farmers to be cooling the climate, as the government’s proposed targets would do, without expecting the rest of the economy to also do the same. “Beef + Lamb New Zealand is calling for a fair approach, where each gas is reduced based on its warming impact. An equitable approach requires carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide to go to net zero, and methane to be reduced and stabilised by between 10–22 per cent. This is consistent with the advice from the independent Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment who

identified this range as meaning methane would be contributing no additional warming. Any target above a 10–22 per cent reduction is, therefore, asking methane to cool the planet. “In addition to our 30 per cent reduction in emissions, sheep and beef farmers have also conserved 1.4 million hectares of native forest, an area the size of Hawke’s Bay, which is capturing significant quantities of carbon and cooling the planet. When combined with our free range, naturally-raised farming systems enable our farmers to produce beef and lamb at a lower carbon footprint than many other countries. “Not allowing trees to offset biological methane, as is allowed for fossil fuel emitters, exacerbates the unequal playing Andrew Morrison, Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s chairman field, and is completely counter and Southland sheep and beef farmer to the recommendations of the Parliamentary Commissioner for tool that farmers should be allowed to access.” the Environment. The sheep and beef sector is also “As a sector, which set a goal of being net carbon neutral by 2050, the ability urgently calling on the government to be for farmers to offset biological methane transparent and release all the advice on-farm through tree planting is a key on which they based its decision.

Providing homoeopathic services December 2018 saw a change to Homeopathic Farm Supports when Tracey Simpson purchased the company and slightly changed the business name to Homeopathic Farm Services. Tracey was born and bred on a dairy farm in the Waikato and has been around dairy farming for most of her life. She left school to go farming and then started her career as a veterinary nurse. She has farmed alongside her husband and three children for the past 20 years, and they are currently sharemilking 900 cows. She first started using homoeopathy in 1999 on cows and also on her children with good success, which lead her to pursue the study of homoeopathy. She has a Diploma in Homoeopathy (Humans) and is currently studying towards her Diploma in Homoeopathy (Animal Health), which she will complete this year. “We have clients all over New Zealand including many organic, conventional and lifestyle farmers who use homoeopathy for animal health in their farming operation, as well as a significant number of sheep and beef producers,” says Tracey. “They have been extremely happy with the success they have experienced using homoeopathy to improve and maintain the health of their animals and productivity of their farm.” HFS Ltd has a Natural Teat Conditioner (MPI — ACVM registered) that is a complete teat spray to be used after

Farmers can promote stock to a nationwide database, as well as buy and sell stock directly from the paddock. Its live streaming is currently running from their Stratford and Rongotea sale yards. NZ Farmers Livestock general manager Bill Sweeney says the livestock industry is embracing the ability to interact online more and more. “Our clients are hard-pressed timepoor farmers, the more tools we can provide them, the better. Our users are becoming actively engaged with online

Deere 5100M a ‘complete all-rounder’ Moving from a smaller ROPS tractor to a John Deere 5100M has not only provided a Waikato dairy farmer more creature comforts, but it has also given him a great utility tractor that handles a range of tasks around the farm. James Mitchell is the third generation of his family to run his 60ha farm, which is on rolling to steep terrain near Okoroire, south of Matamata. While Okoroire is well known for its hot springs; it is also home to some of the best dairy farms in the Waikato. James has run John Deere tractors in the past, most recently an 85hp 5085M. When he decided he wanted to move up to a bigger machine, he could see that the 5100M was the perfect option. With its compact footprint, the John Deere 5100M is ideal for dairy operations. It has great manoeuvrability and a fourmetre turning radius. It also provides stability in tricky terrain thanks to its ladder frame chassis and the 4.5-tonne operating weight. Now that he has two years’ worth of experience and about 700 hours with his 5100M, James sings the praises of the “nuggety” John Deere. “The change from the ROPS tractor to the 5100M with a cabin was certainly a sharp move. It makes it a great place to be during the cold, wet days of winter or hot, dry ones in mid-summer.” James says his John Deere 5100M is the complete all-rounder.

some exceptionally cheap finance, and I really didn’t have to think about saying yes for too long. “It was certainly one of my better decisions.”

Precision farm operation Precision farming is applying knowledge to achieve better results through the analysis of soil nutrients, water retention, irrigation and the accuracy of planting and sowing our crops to make the most of each paddock we farm. Big gains can be unlocked by adding technology into your operation, but like all technology the output is only as good as the input. That’s where Ag Leader takes the field, carrying on a tradition of innovation that pre-dates the world wide web and the touch-screen tablet. It all started with the world’s first on-thego yield monitor back in 1992. Al Myers designed and built the yield monitor at a time when Gates and Jobs were still unknown names. An invention, so critical to the advancement of agriculture, that an early model YM2000 can be found in the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC. Today, Ag Leader is a global brand designing and innovating a suite of products that make precision farming possible. Critical to precision farming is first collecting accurate data; this can only be done with properly calibrated machines. Getting this step right eliminates the garbage in, garbage out scenario, that so many of us encounter. From this step, we can then know with certainty what we are

applying, where and how much we are applying. The right products at the right time are critical factors in ensuring the best results for harvest. In addition to applying the right product at the right time, we need to ensure we are doing this as efficiently as possible. Knowing where your equipment is located and where your key personnel are is vital to ensuring your operation is running as efficiently as possible. With AgFiniti from Ag Leader, you will have this information, at the right time, from any smart device. Now you can make accurate and informed decisions to ensure that your operation is running as profitably as it can. Big Data, Big Brother I hear you say! Not with Ag Leader. All your data is yours; we make no claims to your data, and no one can look at your data unless you give them permission. How many other providers of precision farming products can look you in the eye and say that? To learn more and find your local Ag Leader Dealer visit agleader.com. Maximum battery performance “Every battery you buy and every battery you own is sulphated, and sulphation kills batteries,” says Gerard Anselmi from Recharge Battery Additive. “Every fielday we do we have farmers with batteries well over 12 to 14 years and still going.” After 15 years selling Recharge in Australia and 20 years in New Zealand, the Kiwi ex-farmer says it is a simple formula. “Don’t wait till they die and try and resurrect the dead because the earlier you treat them, the less damage is done, and the longer batteries will go.” Lead acid batteries die prematurely from sulphation build-up, and a Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons,” says Anselmi. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation process, one chemical reaction to counter another, maximising battery charge holding capacity and preventing premature battery failure. The key is to get in early before the damage has been done.” “Treat them early, repeat every two years and keep them charged, it is so

simple. Don’t wait till they die and try and resurrect the dead because after the plates have been damaged, it is too late.” Gerard and Debbie will be at the Fieldays® again this year on site D122, or you can purchase the two-litre online for $350. It is far cheaper at the field days however as there is no DG freight so see us at site 277 and save. The two-litre treats 42 x N-70s or about 20 bigger truck batteries, so about $7 to treat an N-70 and as much as double its life expectancy, keeping them running at full capacity. Please visit our website recharge.net. nz for more information. Yes, you can treat sealed batteries by drilling into each cell — treating and resealing with Sikaflex or a plastic bung. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like fork hoists, golf carts, scissor hoists and standalone power system batteries. Email gerard@recharge.net.nz for more info.

Packed for action Action Lab NZ Ltd are the agents for Can-Am ATV and SSVs, Seadoo Jetskis and Mastercraft power boats. Based at 745 Te Rapa Rd, Hamilton, the team offer the best customer service and the store stocks a huge range of water sports equipment and outdoor adventure. Action Lab can also kit you out with a vast selection of safety gear including life vests, personal locator beacons, VHF radios and much more. Business partner Hayden Vaughan possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience being in the marine industry for more than 18 years and in recent years diving into the Powersports side of things during his career. Can-Am was introduced to the store last year alongside Seadoo. “Can-Am is a great choice for farmers because of the comfort, power and accessories available. The vehicles are extremely versatile, whether used around the farm, in forestry or for recreational purposes such as fishing and hunting,” says Hayden.

“Can-Ams have a low centre of gravity and extremely good safety features such as the engine braking system for steep terrain. That makes offroad experiences more enjoyable. They also have winches, gun racks, bumpers, storage options, spotlights and more as either standard or an option depending on the model. “To have time off-farm, Can-Ams get into those coastal or forestry areas for those favourite fishing and hunting spots, and they can tow your jetski. It is always good to ensure you have the correct safety accessories no matter what activity you are participating in. Action Lab also supply a vest for fishing that has pockets to store personal locator beacons, VHF radios, GoPros, pliers and other necessary articles — these vests are the best thing available. WHEELS ADVERTORIAL

Electric power beyond the highway Swift, silent and economical, cars like the Tesla and the Nissan Leaf are the stars of the modern highway, but there’s a quiet revolution happening off the beaten track thanks to a Kiwi company who have reimagined life on two wheels. UBCO, the electric utility bike, aims to switch out the two and four stroke, small displacement off-road bikes of rural New Zealand with an electric alternative. For recreational riding, for farm chores, or to explore the outdoors, what could be a greener or more efficient idea than an electric bike? However, many e-bikes come at the formula from the side of a standard bicycle, and as such are not tough enough to really handle the great outdoors. Not so here. Anthony Clyde and Daryl Neal are the innovators who developed UBCO, which brings electric two-wheel-drive technology to the open field and the trail. The pair had been active in the e-bike field for many years when they struck on the concept of a machine that’s less of a bicycle with a small electric auxiliary motor for commuting, and more of a reboot of the off-road motorcycle, ditching internal combustion for quiet, efficient voltage. The core of their brainchild is a cleverly designed geometric frame, coupled with twin hub-mounted electric

motors and a modern high performance 48Ah lithium-ion battery situated low down for stable weight distribution. It’s strong, light (at only 65kg), and easy to ride, even for a novice thanks to having no clutch like a petrol bike. With two and four-wheel farm machines still a vital tool in the shed, many farmers and outdoors adventurers are looking to the future. Electric cars dominate the roads of the speculative mid-century, so why not try the advantage of an electric off-road bike? After all, the UBCO two-wheeler boasts up to 120 kilometres across rolling terrain for just under one dollar of power. Add in complete, calm silence, a smooth ride, and it’s easy to see why this is more than just a money saver on the working farm. Early morning work? Let the others stay asleep instead of giving them a twostroke dawn chorus. Skittish animals to herd? They won’t be spooked by exhaust pops and bangs. The lack of vibration makes for a more comfortable time in the saddle and with hands on the grips as well.
