Clean equipment between waterways Hunters and duck shooters are being urged to clean their equipment between waterways to avoid the spread of unwanted freshwater pests. The plea from Waikato Regional Council’s biosecurity team comes with the opening of the 2020 game bird season. “Unwanted freshwater pests such as didymo, hornwort and alligator weed continue to pose a serious threat to our rivers, streams and lakes,” said Waikato Regional Council biosecurity pest plants team leader, Darion Embling. “Once in a waterway they can disperse rapidly, causing significant economic impacts, as well as destroying the environmental, recreational and aesthetic values of our waterways. “We still have a chance to stop the spread of these invasive pests. To date, there have been no positive confirmations of didymo in the North Island, and the freshwater weed hornwort, which is widespread throughout the North Island, has recently been eradicated in the South Island. “Only a couple of years ago Lindavia intermedia, which produces a slime known as lake snow, was found for the first time in the Waikato and there is no known way of removing it once it is present. Some freshwater pests are microscopic and can be spread by a single drop of water. Even if you can’t see the pest — you could be spreading it. “We are asking hunters to ‘Check, Clean, Dry’ any equipment that has come into contact with river or lake water — particularly, boots, decoys, boats and boat trailers. “Check items and leave any debris found at the waterway. Clean all items for at least one minute with a five per cent solution of biodegradable dishwashing solution — that’s about

one tablespoon of detergent per 250ml. Water absorbent materials such as boots require longer soaking times to allow thorough saturation. “Dry all items — even slightly moist items can harbour microscopic pests for months. To ensure cells are dead by drying the item must be completely dry to the touch, inside and out, then left dry for at least another 48 hours before use.” Boat safety is also important, ensure it is up to standard. “Our council’s navigation safety bylaw is really clear. If you are in a boat under six metres and it is underway, every person on board must be wearing a properly fitting life jacket — no matter what waterway you are on in the Waikato,” said Waikato Regional Council’s maritime services team leader Richard Barnett.

The Waikato region has had a series of good rainfall events during the past month, but most of these events largely missed Hauraki, Coromandel and South Auckland. Pasture covers are very low for many farmers in these districts, which presents a serious situation heading into winter, the Waikato Primary Industries Adverse Event Cluster heard recently. The cluster includes Waikato Rural Support Trust, the Ministry for Primary Industries, Waikato Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, Federated Farmers, DairyNZ, Beef+Lamb NZ, the forestry sector and others. It has met weekly during summer on the drought and is actively engaged with the Covid-19 response with CDEM and the Waikato District Health Board. “It is a serious situation in Hauraki and Coromandel districts. The drought is compounded by challenges with pests like crickets and slugs, and we have just not been getting the rainfall we need,” said president of Hauraki-Coromandel Federated Farmers, Kevin Robinson. Farmers have fed a lot of supplementary feed during summer, and many have eaten into, or even used their entire winter reserves. “Fortunately, pasture growth has generally been good for the rest of the region enabling good recovery prior to winter for most, but there will be challenges and risks looking out to spring, said Waikato Rural Support Trust chairman, Neil Bateup. “The feed situation remains tight for everyone. It is imperative everyone has a plan and continues to review their

plan. Seek advice from your neighbour, farm adviser, accountant and bank. “We will eventually come through the other side of the drought with the support of each other, our neighbours and our communities. Our farmers and growers are going to be crucial to New Zealand’s recovery from the Covid-19 outbreak. Please reach out for advice and support where you need.” The Rural Support Trust has hosted a series of webinars for the first time care of the lockdown, ranging from 20 to 100 participants. DairyNZ and Beef+Lamb NZ, amongst others, have been running plenty of online sessions as well.
A weekly drought recovery newsletter has been published by the Waikato Rural Support Trust for the last 10 weeks, and 83,000 copies are being dropped into all rural letter boxes in Waikato and South Auckland. “The newsletter is one of our key communication channels to farmers with the latest information on support and events, and you can find them on Facebook and our website,” said Wanda Leadbeater, coordinator of Waikato Rural Support Trust. WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES
A LIFETIME WITH DOGS BY ANN VAN ENGELEN
Allen Nisbet became involved with sheep dog trials and farming when he was young and moved to the country after living in an institution in Auckland City as a child.
“I
was born in Whangaroa, but my mother died when I was young, and my dad went to war. Upon dad’s return, he worked as a shepherd on a Lands and Survey place at Pouto, and I eventually reacquainted with him,” says Allen. “A couple of local Maori families befriended me, the Te Wakes and Kennas, they used to give me heck as a skinny pakeha. These were some of the best years of my life. They gave me a horse that I couldn’t catch, and when I did, I couldn’t stop it. To teach me to ride they put me on bareback and trekked to the Pouto lighthouse. The horse would slide down the big dunes on its back legs. I figured it knew more than me, so I stuck with it, too scared to fall off.
I had one thing over them though, I was better at rugby and played for Southern, the best rugby team in Northland. “I worked with dad and ended up managing farms and was 42-years at one near Kaikohe working for the managing director of Holeproof, then Neal and Annette Plowman when they purchased the property — they were the best employers in the world. We originally ran 6,000 ewes and 600 breeding cows. We milked 1,800 cows and had the biggest Simmental Stud for six years. I was very lucky to work for the Plowmans from 1984 until 2006. They are true blue New Zealanders and put a lot back into the country. “I got into dog training and trials as a sport around 1967. I enjoy it immensely
Training and breeding working dogs is an interest Allen has had since the late 1960s

Allen Nisbet was recently made a life member of the NZ Dog Trial Association
as it goes hand in hand with your work. They are your best mate, and you spend hours training them, which helps your stockmanship skills so they can control your stock. “There are lots of factors for producing a good dog. You need to be persistent and consistent — it is like playing rugby and golf or having children. You have to put the time, and they have different personalities. “Some need to be kidded along while others don’t, but you need to be the alpha dog in the pack. It is about mutual respect and trust. You get more out of them through respect rather than bullying. You become a bit more canine yourself from understanding your dog’s behaviour. It is a deeper subject than people realise — although it is a simple one. Like learning to read a horse’s vibes and how it reacts to different things you learn to think from the dog’s angle.”
Allen has recorded every dog he has bred and trained since he first began. “Breeding and training dogs is something I enjoy. I don’t put dogs in a sale because animal welfare is my priority and I need to know the home it is going. “The average person can train a dog basically in around 25 hours. You need to be able to control your dog, and I do off and on stock training to keep the natural balance. You ask them to do something, not demand them.” Allen suggests three short lessons each day. “Like a foreign language, a 20-minute lesson is better than all-day tuition. Finish with putting your hand on its shoulder and saying ‘good dog’. Don’t let it jump around. If you can feel its warmth through your hand — it can feel your warmth. That creates a bond with you rather than working through fear.

“I feed my working dogs at night time, not the morning or they get lethargic with a balanced protein and fat diet, there are many good products available. I mainly use Tux Energy along with other feeds to give variation. “You need the right food for what your dog is doing, like a human running a marathon, dogs are athletes and need the right input. “I love dog trial competing and testing myself against my peers. place second, I go to win but don’t mind shouting another winner a beer, that is what it is all about. If you get 20th with a young dog, but you did well, you can be happy. “I am coming up 83 years old and was recently granted a life membership to the NZ Dog Trial Association. “I was very humbled as there are many deserving people out there. “It is the first time in my life I have been speechless.”

are having problems with their people — which is often the case. It is good to see them in their own environment. Horses are a unique species, and I start with groundwork and communication, which is not natural to people. Once they learn how to communicate through spatial awareness, it is a sweet experience. “When you learn to make the horse feel secure, it is much more fun for everyone. I show how to change the demeanour quickly and teach the horse to yield their feet to the person. It is a spatial thing, like a flight zone, a bubble

of air — it is not natural to people, and often a person doesn’t understand that a horse is trying to check that out with them. “The horse may step on their foot to move the person, and the person gets grumpy. The horse gets confused and then doesn’t know who should move first. It is communication, and the animal needs to feel safe and secure, and that scales up in the riding as well. “I teach about feeding horses properly because I had to learn how to feed my horse here. In the States, it is a more natural environment. Horses can get illnesses like laminitis, gut issues, and spores because they are not ruminants. You need to figure out ways to feed them like creating track systems where there is not much fodder. Let them out to graze for short periods and don’t let them have the richer grasses. “When you start feeling like you are having issues then it is good to call me. Large animals can be frightening — it’s not like a dog jumping up on you. They are big, powerful and complex creatures. “Some are ridden often, so they are more broke than others. Owners may be busy working and lucky to get six hours a week to ride, leaving the horses in the paddock. They want to get out and work so you have to hook it to be mentally with you, then they are your friend and will come to you at the gate. There are a lot of simple but complex things, and we have developed techniques that have mimicked a horse’s behaviour. “I love working out solutions for people and their horses and teach them how to read their horse. I have a lot
of tips on halter breaking a youngster and have passed the torch of starting horses to a younger woman, Taryn Kyd of Vaquero Views. We have worked together for nine years, and in Auckland, I work in her large facility. In Hawke’s Bay, I offer a variety of services and can help start a horse and work with started horses. “I have many stories of people not understanding their horse and becoming exceptional when guided in the right direction. I work with anyone who is keen to know more — they don’t need to be into competing or have a fancy animal. I am happy to deal with a donkey. It is not about competition with me, it is about individual relationships with horses, and all that requires is a desire — happy horse, happy person. “I believe you never retire — you work and retire at the same time. Part of the reason I left the music business is horses are my first passion and something I can do as I get older. It keeps me young and happy, and I love helping. It gives you purpose as animals are so important to their owners. When people worry about their animal, they get stressed. I am pleased to be in New Zealand and thank my lucky stars that I can live and work horses. “Follow my Facebook pages or website, NZ Horse Help or NZ Horse Help Hawkes Bay. I am very accessible, approachable and clear with instructions when helping people understand their animals.” Follow Teresa on her website or Facebook pages NZ Horse Help Hawkes Bay and NZ Horse Help.

TRAINING IN DAIRY by Ann van Engelen Women were represented strongly in the 2020 Waikato Dairy Trainee of the Year category of the Waikato Dairy Industry Awards, achieving a clean sweep of first, second and third places with 21-year-old Grace Gibberd named the winner.
“I
have a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Agricultural Science and minoring in Animal Science from Massey University. I am a farm assistant on the DairyNZ 115ha property at Newstead, and am milking 360 cows,” says Grace. “I grew up on a lifestyle block with a house cow, some beef cattle and a few pet sheep. During my studies, I worked as a farm assistant on dairy farms in Huntly and Ashburton for summer placement. “There are a lot of things I love about farming, including physically
working outdoors, interacting with animals and being involved in planning and management strategies. I love the variety and range of tasks that the industry offers. “Having very little on-farm experience has meant a steep learning curve to get me up to speed with practical skills. I have come a long way from where I started and am really grateful for my position on one of DairyNZ’s research farms. It is a unique opportunity, which has developed and taught me so much. “It was really exciting to win. I had a friend who competed previously, and

Working on a research farm means Grace is able to expand on her university degree in Agricultural Science majoring in Animal Science
I thought entering would be a good challenge for myself. I have always had extended family farming with sheep, beef and dairy. I am a practical person and enjoy getting out there, and the science side really interests me. “Being on a research farm has been great seeing behind the scenes and involved in all the trial work going on. The topics they investigate for farmers and how they go about testing ideas and gathering information has been a highlight. Developing my skills and applying my farming knowledge has been an asset. “We have 360 cows on-farm, predominantly Friesian. We are selfsufficient and have mostly grass and grass silage and grow maize on our support block. The dairy industry has a really good network of people and a wellconnected community. I am big on the community. It is real compared to other
industries. I help with DairyNZ weekly farm watch data for various regions and produce that with our benchmark herd, which I help manage. We complete weekly farm walks gathering information to publish. “It is a good opportunity and like managing your own little farm. I can take ownership and have a look at how my decisions influence what goes into the vat or what happens in the herd. “We planned the start of calving July 1, and it normally goes for around 12 weeks. During the first season, it helped with data recording and jobs around the farm, calving and picking up cows and calves. This year will be similar. “My manager Ben Fisher trains me, and I do training courses with DairyNZ Foundation Training, which is the same courses their consulting officers do. I have done a handful that is relevant to my role. My family has a lifestyle block in
Grace won the 2020 Waikato Dairy Trainee of the Year and says the experience helped with upskilling and gaining valuable knowledge for the industry
Horotiu. Our house cow was my younger sister’s calf club calf, and we kept her and got her in calf. We started milking her once she calved. It was originally by hand, and we eventually brought a single cow milking machine. We got tons of milk from her. We get around 10 litres a day ,so we had to get creative with ways to use milk like creamed rice. “Entering the awards is highly recommended. Even though I had studied, it is very beneficial. All the requirements are on the NZ Dairy Industry Awards website. After each round of judging, you get feedback, and it is really helpful for personal and career development. “From here, I would like to carry on with an on-farm career and work my way up to management and contract
milking with sharemilking in years to come. For now, I am building my skills to complement my knowledge from my degree. “I have chosen this as my career — the awards were a great experience. We really appreciate the sponsors as the awards wouldn’t happen without them — we owe them so much thanks. “I think the future of dairy farming is looking very positive. I think people get worried about alternative milk and meatfree burgers taking over and making our industry void, but I don’t think we need to worry. There will always be a market for the real thing. If we ensure we tell our story of how we produce our products, treat our animals and care for the environment — we have nothing to worry about.”

No rust — no problem
Boost farm revenue
Fast, easy, cheap and clean corrosion protection — that’s CorrosionX.
A simple way to boost dairy farm revenue is often overlooked, and that is by improving stock water quality.
Buying new machines, 4WDs and boat trailers could be off the menu for some of us now. To keep the old ones going, stop corrosion and make them look tidy is easier and cheaper than you think. You want your gear in shape, retain its value and not spend a fortune. Winter is coming and will be hard on electrics, chassis voids and roofing. Sounds tricky? Not at all! Expensive preparation, messy grinding and hours of painting were once the only way to protect your gear. Now, farmers, milk shed installers, boaties and hunters have worked out what the military and civil aviation have used for decades: CorrosionX. From the Whangarei bridge to New Zealand’s ports, tractor suppliers and electrical companies, CorrosionX is stopping rust and electrical trouble on a daily basis. Spray it from an aerosol, roll it on, wipe it on or put it on a brush. Winterise a large tractor for the cost of a box of beer. Steel shed ceilings are sprayed between milkings not even needing preparation or a ladder. Chassis are CorrosionX’d in a few hours. CorrosionX is MPI approved to C11, same as lanolin as well as military and aviation certified. It’s not flammable, a superfast penetrant and free of VOCs. It outlasts any product we tested against. Exceeding 35,000 volt dielectric strength, it can be applied over wet and already corroded electrics and electronics —
Kiwi farmers pay lots of attention to animal nutrition and health, but how many stop to think about the hidden effect of their farm drinking water. “Milk is 87 per cent water, so milk production is closely related to water intake. “For every litre of milk produced a cow needs to drink at least three litres of water, which equates to 150 litres of water/day for high-performers,” says director of trencher manufacturer Terrasaw Industries, Keith Fergusson. “Cattle, especially dairy cows, are sensitive to water palatability and prefer to drink clean, cool, fresh water. Research has shown that the ideal water temperature for cows is between 15C–17C — they really don’t like warm water. Even with minor water quality problems, milk production can be down by 10–20 per cent. That is serious dollars, so how much are you losing? “Black polythene water pipe exposed to the sun gets extremely hot. In fact, you can use it for a solar hot water system. The problem is, many farms have kilometres of it running along fence lines — on the surface. “Warm water in troughs grows smelly algae and bacteria. Yuk! You wouldn’t drink it, why should your cows have to?”
safe on rubber, paint and all plastics including monofilament. The product is available all across the Waikato, and mobile applicator and retailer Jon Cole from Colken Engineering Ltd 021 033 9882 is available for onsite work. Free quotes and practical advice can be obtained from head office in Whangarei, call 09 438 8800 or Tom Muller’s mobile on 021 469 972. Improving overall economy and stopping spending money on corrosionrelated trouble is made simple. No mess, no stink, no preparation. This crisis is not going to last forever, but long enough to rust out unattended gear. Get on to it before the winter does. Keith suggests burying pipelines under the turf is a simple, permanent way to keep trough supply water cool and palatable. It also reduces damage from stock and the sun. The portable TerraTrencher, invented by Keith on a Northland farm, was purposedesigned for quickly burying pipe. Being the world’s most portable trencher, the size of a chainsaw, it can be used freehand near fences and gateways, or wheel-mounted for longer runs. It is very handy for under-gating electric fence line cable. “Equipped with a state-of-the-art powerhead, it is fast and can shorten a two-day job to a couple of hours. “Used widely both in New Zealand and overseas for fibre-optic cables and irrigation lines, it is finding use in dozens of other industries. “Would you believe it is also used for robotic mower control cable, transplanting palm trees, root pruning, cutting foundations, predator-proof fencing, even ice fishing in North America.” “The TT500 model is the most popular choice for agricultural and horticultural use. It digs a 40mm wide trench to a depth of half a metre.” For more information, go to terrasaw. com.

Resurfacing concrete areas Grant Kennedy at ASAP Decorative Specialists Ltd has been operating for more than 15 years in the painting and decorating industry and also provides concrete restoration and maintenance solutions to farmers. Grant says re-establishing and resurfacing concrete pads, footpaths and other areas as well as having a maintenance programme in place helps protect valuable assets. “With a lot of farmers starting to dry off, now is a good time for cleaning and getting extra jobs completed like water blasting and bacterial and slime removal,” says Grant. “Using a deep clean treatment is recommended to be ready for the new season. We water blast areas to clean the scum off and apply a deep clean
treatment. It works with the natural elements to provide a safer area during the winter months and continues to work for six months. “We can take care of any repairs that need to be done like resurfacing concrete and non slip areas or creating non-slip sections where needed. We fix red or white rust on framing using low molecular resins after cleaning, preparing and removing additional rust. The product absorbs into the rust and cures hard like a resin. It can last between 5–7 years on old steel, and

We can protect interior dairy or pit walls, the vat room, lunchroom, hallways and toilet, clothesline area and footpaths. The epoxy works best inside the shed as it protects against the acid, cow muck, cleaners and milk fats. These floorings are becoming more popular as it helps the cleaning process. “Building exteriors can be cleaned and painted using high build resin to produce a smart look that is protected from the evasive environment. High build resin creates an aesthetically pleasing image. We also recommend a maintenance programme to get jobs sorted consistently.
