Supporting the Rural Community since 1940

A $16 million restoration package for the lower Waikato catchment is now underway after local body and government representatives, contractors and landowners all got together for a blessing of four environmental restoration and climate resilience projects. The projects are funded from the government’s Covid-19 recovery package. With extra funding also provided by Waikato River Authority, Waikato Regional Council and others to increase resilience to climate change, help restore the health and wellbeing of the Waikato River, and provide jobs for iwi and local communities. Waikato Regional Council CE Chris McLay said the lower Waikato catchment includes a giant floodplain, and its flood protection infrastructure created community resilience and economic stability. “The funding we have received will help us replace ageing flood protection infrastructure, building with the environment and taonga species in mind, and undertake considerable environmental enhancements to reduce erosion, protect and restore freshwater quality and create habitat for biodiversity and mahinga kai species,” Mr McLay said. “It has enabled us to accelerate these partnership projects, which may otherwise not have got off the ground, and create jobs to stimulate the economy. “Altogether, about 80 FTE jobs will be created. More than 360,000 plants will go into the ground, nearly 300ha of land will be retired, and about 180km of fencing will be built, with the support of landowners.” Waikato River Authority co-chair Tipa Mahuta said the programme was collaboration at its finest. “When we get it right, it feels like this, and this has to be the new normal. This

has to be community-led and driven for the change to be sustainable.” Overall, Waikato Regional Council secured about $28 million from the government, and regionally, the funding will support approximately 300 jobs of varying durations. Around $11 million of the government funding supports the four partnership projects launched in the lower Waikato. Other funding comes from: • Waikato River Authority — $1.2 million • Waikato Regional Council — $5 million • MPI Hill Country Erosion Fund, Te Uru Rakau 1BT, DOC and others — more than $500,000 In total, more than $16 million will be spent on four projects for the lower Waikato catchment.

Forests vital for climate change

MAY 2021

The Forest Owners Association says the Federated Farmers’ call for the government to restrict forest planting ranks as an unnecessary intrusion on the right of farmers to plant trees, and a restriction would make it more difficult for New Zealand to reach its vital climate change targets. Federated Farmers has said the government has failed to live up to its promise during the election campaign to make landowners apply for resource consent if they intend to plant more than 50 hectares of trees on land capability classes one to five. Forest Owners Association president Phil Taylor says last year’s PriceWaterhouseCoopers’ Report, commissioned by MPI, found that, on average, the value-add for forestry, a hectare, was many times higher than it was from the average hill country property. “Federated Farmers are telling their members that their national organisation is trying to stop them planting forests on whatever land they might want to,” Mr Taylor says. “It’s a commercial decision for landowners to plant trees based on their assessment of the productivity of that land. Forests are productive too. Yet Federated Farmers are demanding restrictions on all land classes.”

He adds that Federated Farmers seem to be confused about the rules and rate of overseas investment in forest planting. “Firstly, they are complaining about carbon forestry. Then they say that the government needs to fix the special forestry test for direct overseas investment. “If they checked with the Overseas Investment Office, they would find out that the OIO is not allowed to, and doesn’t, approve any carbon forest planting. “Then if Federated Farmers checked on approvals for production forest planting, they would find that the rate for the 18 months to the end of last year was only 500 hectares a month. Since then, the approval rate has fallen.” Mr Taylor also says the Climate Change Commission calculates there is a need for another 380,000 hectares of plantation forests within 15 years for New Zealand to reach its greenhouse gas reduction targets. That represents

about four per cent of the existing sheep and beef estate. “If we fail to get that modest area in trees because of planting restrictions,

then the government may have to reduce livestock numbers instead. I don’t think Federated Farmers would want that.”

Life’s memories valued by Ann van Engelen Kirsty Joy Halliday travels New Zealand using her photography skills to capture irreplaceable memories for families that come across her path.

“I

love the different areas like Waikato with the lavender fields and horse studs and the landscape of the west coast,” says Kirsty. “Taranaki has the mountain, beautiful cliffs and sandstone. When the sun sets over the water, it is stunning and so different to the east coast and Northland.” Kirsty spent her childhood in Wellington, finished her schooling in Nelson and met her husband, Richard, when she worked on the ski lifts at Mt Ruapehu. “Richard was interested in mining, so we joined his brother in Western Australia. While we were there, I had a

miscarriage. We consequently moved to Brisbane as I needed to be closer to family in New Zealand while I dealt with my grief. “We lived in Australia for seven years before returning home five years ago when my dad passed away suddenly.” When Kirsty’s first son was born eight years ago, she got her first camera. “I loved taking photos of him and manipulating them on Photoshop. It was a short time after I did a family shoot with my dad that he unexpectedly died. Those photos were the only professional images I had of him, my son, and I together. I have also suffered multiple miscarriages. Dad dying made me realise how important photos are, and

“For Heartfelt, we get a call about every six weeks, which is too much but not enough. A lot of families are missing out on the opportunity as they may not be told about Heartfelt. I tell people even if they don’t want photos at the time to please do it. If you can’t look at them for 10 years, you still have the photos rather than missing the opportunity. We are trying to get the word out as we can, as it is such an amazing organisation, and our services are free.” Kirsty also specialises in family, wedding, boudoir and maternity portraiture. “I teamed up with Wolf and the Wildling clothing and purchased costumes for children to dress up in winter. These include bears, wolves, foxes and bunny rabbits. “I find children relax out in nature, and you get amazing photos of their personalities at the forest or beach. They run around roaring at each other and jump out from behind trees making memories themselves. “With my maternity photography, I occasionally get the mum to have a swim at the end of the shoot. It is a cleansing feeling when you are pregnant, and the ocean encases you in a beautiful way. “With boudoir photography, women often don’t realise how beautiful they are. I enjoy capturing photos they are proud of and amazed at. “I have two children, study psychology and have an office job on the side. You have to fit it all in while you can. It helps to know everyone is on their own journey. Knowing my photography brings joy to people is reward enough for me.”

08

I wanted to make it possible for other people to have their memories captured to cherish forever. “I joined Heartfelt. It is an organisation of volunteer photographers who are available every hour of every day to hospitals across New Zealand and Australia when babies pass away. “We capture professional images of parents with their baby. We also get called out to terminally ill children through Starship and other nationwide hospitals. Having lost babies myself, it is a way I can give back with the skill I have been blessed with.” Kirsty has won several awards for portraiture photography across Australasia and internationally, including the International Portrait Awards, The Rise International Photography Awards and the prestigious NZ Iris Awards. “I am self-taught and continue to learn. I like to bring emotion to photos and show a story, not just a happy snap. One of my images at the Iris Awards is a self-portrait with a single tear rolling down my cheek with an opaque pregnant belly. “I did this to show I have suffered loss, and it was part of my healing. It won silver, and to me, it was honouring my babies as well as all the mums that have babies in their hearts but not in their arms. “It is a grief that no one knows unless you have been through it. They call it the lonely grief because you are the one who had the baby inside you, but a baby will always be a baby to the mother. People need to know it is OK to talk about the loss.

Thankful for opportunities by Ann van Engelen

Rhudi Redelinghuys met his wife Hillary when she accepted a milking job to help pay for her student loan while she was involved in marine studies several years ago.

R

hudi comes from South Africa with no farming background prior to moving to New Zealand. Hillary has been an outdoors person all her life, with her dad having a fishing boat charter in Whangamata when she was young. Contract milking on a Trinity Lands Limited 163ha Lichfield farm, milking 640 cows, Rhudi and Hillary placed third regionally in the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards Share Farmer category. “After high school I did marine studies at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. A year in, I needed a job to pay my student loan,” says Hillary. “My mum and stepdad were working on a drystock farm, and my stepdad

hit up the neighbours for a milking job for me. Rhudi was the 2IC, and our friendship blossomed from there. My future plans changed, and instead of doing the marine and diving thing, I went into dairy farming.” Rhudi moved to New Zealand with his family in 2006. “Hillary and I fell in love, got married and now have a two-year-old son, with another on the way,” says Rhudi. “In South Africa, I grew up in town and had no farming background. When I was 18 years old, family friends in the dairy industry helped me get a farmhand job. I worked my way up to 2IC and then management. We are very proud of gaining third place at the awards.

Waikato is very hot for dairy farming with pretty steep competition out there. It was nice to get the recognition to keep doing what we are and improve where we need to. “Working at Trinity is a huge opportunity. Our general manager Andrew Archer is a great mentor. He has a massive amount of knowledge and brings in a whole new angle to things we discuss. “We run a system five, split calving system milking around 640 cows peak season. It is 60 per cent in autumn and 40 per cent in spring. We milk a fair bit in winter with our high stocking rate feeding supplements the majority of the year for all cows as we milk 365 days a year. “When we came to Trinity Lands, we had never done all-year milking before and had heard both horror and good stories but we had heard good things about Trinity. A big thing for us was the stability with cash flow which takes pressure off with starting up overdrafts and things. “Trinity has a high Breeding Worth and Production Worth standard and gets cows into calf rather than sending them to the works when possible. We aim to breed Kiwi cross A2A2 cows with a bigger frame to supply A2 milk. All offspring that are A2A2 go to specific A2A2 Trinity farms.

“We grow around 14ha of fodder beet and in summer 19ha of chicory annually. Chicory helps us keep the Fat Evaluation Index that Fonterra grades us on at the right levels. The fodder beet is high risk but high yielding compared to kale and swede. It means we have more pasture and less crop area. “Our milk production was 610kg milk solids per cow over the past year, targeting 390,000. It was 377,865kgMS the previous year with 620 cows. Split calving and the winter milk mean we have the extra days for milk production. “Last October, we decided to enter the dairy industry awards to learn and identify our areas for development within our dairy farming after our first year. The judges looked at all aspects of the business, and we value their feedback. They noted our opportunities versus our weakness for improving our operation. “This is the smallest stocking unit, and the system is very different to what we did before. We have always worked on larger-scale farms. Before coming to Trinity, we were in Mangakino milking 950 cows for Wairarapa Moana Incorporated. “We found this job on the Farmsource Fencepost and were very humbled to get interviewed. Andrew came to look at how we ran our last farm, which was a lot of pressure, but it certainly gives future employers an insight into how you work.

MAY 2021

Born in South Africa, Rhudi was given the opportunity to work as a farmhand when he was a teenager and has worked his way up to management and share farming from there

“Having spent 15 years in New Zealand, the opportunities that have been available to us are amazing. You don’t get the same opportunities in South Africa, and the young people really struggle. Being outdoors is what attracted us to the industry. It

isn’t just a job. It is a lifestyle with different challenges with the seasons and animals. Every day of every year is different. We are excited to be part of New Zealand’s future, creating a more sustainable industry for future generations.”

Tori Banta has had a love of horses since she was young with her passion leading her to take up the wild Kaimanawa horse challenge.

“G

rowing up we always had a horse. When I was 14 years old I got a tricky little pony. The training method I was using wasn’t working for him and a friend mentioned Parelli Natural Horsemanship,” says Tori. “That led me to study at the Parelli ranch in Florida when I was 17. In 2011 I came home as a Parelli instructor and I eventually established Tori Lee Equestrian. “I teach horsemanship, training and start young horses. “When I was at the Parelli ranch I met Canadian rider Lauren Barwick and I went to the London Paralympics as her groom. I also attended the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with the Canadian team.”

Tori has started around 50 horses in the last 10 years as well as helping with other horse work. “Over recent years my students challenged me to take on one of the Kaimanawa horses from the annual muster. I had no desire to train a wild horse, but this year the opportunity came up to be a part of the Freedom to Friendship Kaimanawa Challenge. “The Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Association has a group of professional trainers that they endorse. The trainers adopt a horse to care for and I was chosen as a wild card trainer. You have six months to tame and train the horse. “I decided it is time to take up the challenge and try my hand at putting the

Two Kaimanawa wild horses are in Tori’s care, one which she is competing with and another that came as his companion and she is taming

each other through facial expressions and body language. They see us as predatory and I am excited to see if what I am teaching is accurate. “Working with a horse that has had no human interaction before is a challenge. As much as I tame and train horses, they are going to teach me more. I can then pass what I learn to other people. It is like a little circle where I am helping the horses but they are helping me and that is very special. “Adopting the Kaimanawa horses is important as people don’t realise what a special breed they are. They have been in the Kaimanawa ranges in the Central North Island for around 150 years and are completely wild. They see army personnel working in the area but have never interacted with people.” Tori says that the Kaimanawa wild

horses and the Ahipara wild horses in Northland are some of the only wild horse herds in New Zealand. “Keeping them wild is a special thing between the Kaimanawa Heritage Horses Welfare Society, the New Zealand Defence Force and DOC. They are trying to give them the best possible life but need to keep them healthy. “The horses are one of the best managed wild herds in the world. In my opinion, we are doing a great job of caring for the breed without interfering with them. The annual muster is an important part of the process although it upsets people. “The reality is the two horses that I have from the recent muster are the healthiest horses I have seen. That comes down to the fact that they have enough feed and roam the land. Having

the space to wander is important for them. If you overcrowd that area they can’t find enough food and become unhealthy. Before the herd was managed they came out in poorer condition with issues such as excessive lice. That is nowhere near as bad now. Keeping the herd numbers down by people adopting them means the ones left behind don’t have to struggle for resources and thrive. “This year there were 506 horses counted and they needed to get the figure down to around 300 for the optimum number. “They try to find homes for around 100 horses, but due to Covid the muster didn’t happen last year, so this year 200 homes needed finding. “KHH and DOC decided to only muster those they had homes for, so

only 125 were removed and none were culled. Although they are taken out of their natural habitat, they do thrive in domestication if that initial process is done kindly. “You need to take it slowly to let them adjust, and understand they have never been behind fences or close to humans. Staying in the Kaimanawas is not a reality considering the space that is there. “It is a special thing to be a part of helping them to adjust to what we see as normal but is foreign to them. Kaimanawa horses are a super special breed and to lose them because of mismanagement would be such a shame.” Read more about Tori’s experience with the Kaimanawa horses next month.

Jason and Carley took ownership of Collins Auto Electrical in 2011 and have since relocated and grown the company into a one-stop shop. “Currently, we employ a team of 21 across the car care complex at 2 Quentin Drive, Hamilton Lake,” says Jason. “Our team is always available to discuss your requirements and find the right solution to your needs. It is all about the customer experience — that is what we pride ourselves on. “Often farmers come in to see our store more often than not walk out with some sort of purchase. You really need to visit the store to see the range and sample the Collins experience.” Collins Autoparts stock a huge range of automotive and auto electrical components, parts and accessories. “This includes batteries, starter motors, alternators, switches, standard and LED lights, fuses and relays, etc, as well as a comprehensive range of general auto parts like brake parts, suspension components, filters, fluids and oils. “We have accessories for not only cars but trucks, tractors and other vehicles. If, by chance, we don’t have what you need, our specialist and experienced parts team enjoy the challenge of sourcing parts required. “When you step into our showroom, you realise it is an automotive

experience, with a spaciously laid out shop and a relaxed customer area. We love nothing more than a good coffee from our machine and a good chat at our conversation leaner. Our team is always available to offer free, friendly and honest automotive advice. “When the automotive team is working on your vehicle, we treat it as if it were our own. It is that level of care and pride that we think sets us apart from the competition. “Collins Automotive offers a full range of services including general automotive repairs and maintenance, auto electrical diagnosis, repair and installations, electric and hybrid vehicle service and repairs. “We also do vehicle air conditioning service and repairs, vehicle aesthetic and performance enhancements and upgrades, and most recently providing full Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) recalibrations. “We also have a VTNZ inspector onsite full-time to provide our independent WOF inspections. Our automotive complex is conveniently located between Frankton and Hamilton Lake. You will find more than you might expect from a standard automotive repairs mechanic. “During Fieldays®, we will have instore specials and would love people to pop in and say hi on their way to or from the event.”

Matthew from Unearthag Ltd not only runs a precision agriculture business; he also helps his father grow maize for grain on good traditionally summer dry soils on the east coast. In the 2020 season, his father won the Pioneer Yield Competition for the highest grain yield in New Zealand with 23.27 tonnes/ha in his maize strip trial. Sure, nature can play a large part in farm profitability, but so does understanding the production process, minimising risk and maximising return. Assessing yield maps in SMS software, comparisons in large commercial on-farm trials, soil samples and EC maps — all determine how fields are farmed.

The right tools in the field to get the crop in the ground include Ag Leader auto steer in the tractor, electric drives with auto row shut-off, turn compensation and variable rate ability, Martin No-Till Row Cleaners and Closing systems and starter fertiliser hardware — all supplied and implemented by Unearth Ag Ltd. Although the farm is not no-till, adoption of no-till hardware on the planter has allowed us to minimise tillage, not sacrifice yield, and improve soil health. With nearly 20 years experience in precision ag hardware, maize planters, sprayers, auto-steer and farm production systems, we have you covered.

Quality, style and high performance Quality, style and high performance never go out of fashion, and there is only one name that has, for seven decades, consistently delivered all three when it comes to housing. That name is Lockwood Homes. Combining the natural advantages of solid wood construction with a range of designs from the classic to the contemporary, Lockwood has proudly produced homes and commercial buildings since 1951. Every Lockwood home is created on principles and fundamentals of good design and simple, thoughtful, beautiful and effortlessly functional. “Avoiding fads and trends, we focus on details contributing to durability rather than those leading to maintenance overheads.” says managing director Andrew La Grouw. “Every building is an embodiment of our brand. The name Lockwood is your guarantee of a home built on integrity, family values and a reputation for outstanding quality,” Moreover, because it is solid wood, a Lockwood offers unique advantages, including natural earthquake and extreme weather resistance. Thermal efficiency comes as part of the package; wood breathes, contributing to air circulation and a warm, dry home. It also forms a natural insulating layer beefed up by insulation sandwiched between solid timber, delivering energy efficiency 50% greater than the NZBC requirements for solid timber homes.

“Every battery you buy and every battery you own is sulphated. Sulphation reduces charge holding capacity and eventually kills batteries,” says Gerard Anselmi from Recharge Battery Additive. After 21 years on the market in NZ, the ex-farmer says it is a simple formula. “Don’t wait till they die and try and resurrect the dead because it is often too late by then. So the earlier you treat them, the less damage is done, and the longer batteries will go. “Our record used to be 18 years and we have had a good 30 of those in the last year or two. “It was very nice to get a call from Rick Ashley in Kati Kati who said, and I quote: ‘Having owned and operated garages for the last 40 years, I believe I know a good product when I use one. I have used Recharge in batteries on many occasions with impressive results. From bringing them back to life and as periodic cleansing every two years. My own vehicle of 2001 vintage has the original battery still going strong to this day (19 years). This has been verified by two battery dealers. Recharge is an awesome product.’ Rick Ashley, RJ Automotive, Kati Kati, Bay of Plenty. “Lead-acid batteries die prematurely from sulphation build-up. A Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons,” says Anselmi.

MAXIMUM BATTERY PERFORMANCE A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program get 10 years, or often more, out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge occasionally to eliminate the sulphation problem. Yes you can treat sealed batteries, simply drill into each cell, treat, charge and reseal with Sika-Flex Auto or a plastic bung.

“We are effectively re-aciding the battery with a chemical reaction, maximising battery charge holding capacity, preventing lead corrosion and premature battery failure.” Gerard and Debbie will be at the National Fieldays® again this year onsite D-122 as usual, or you can purchase the two-litre online for $360. It is far cheaper at the Fieldays®, however, as there is no DG freight, so see us there. The two-litre treats 42 x N-70s or about 20 bigger truck batteries, so about $7 to treat an N-70zz. Please

Creativity with No.8 wire

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

Auckland artist Gina Ferguson’s art piece Wear ‘n‘ Tear has gained her first place in the 2021 Fieldays® No.8 Wire National Art Award. The annual competition, hosted by Waikato Museum, is partnered with Momentum Waikato Community Foundation. Supported by the New Zealand National Fieldays® Society, artists across Aotearoa continue to reinvent an everyday farming product and turn it into a compelling work of art. Sculpture Virginia King judged the event and said the winning work using gorse, soap and wire was inventive and had a stunning visual impact and inventive use of materials. “The imagination, skill and creativity put into the winning creation is incredible. Wear ‘n’ Tear resonated with me on so many levels. The artist’s thought-provoking concept and creative transformation of number eight wire left me with a sense of intrigue. “The task of whittling the competition entries down to my top three has been extremely tough but also an immense honour. I am in awe of all the works submitted this year — I feel truly inspired.” Morrinsville-based Heather Olesen placed second for her entry Liquid Life and Cherise Thomson from Auckland was placed third for Dune Profile No.1. Guard against unwanted visitors Rural properties are fast becoming a favoured target for criminals, especially when the majority of farms have their own fuel tank to service their on-farm vehicles. “With the even higher prices of fuel now, there has been a spike in the number of rural properties experiencing thefts from tanks,” says the managing director of Smartway Security Services, Roger Bull. “Luckily, there are also a growing number of technology applications that can help prevent it.” Smartway Security has been operating for more than 18 years. Its clients and services range from large international corporations to farms, business and monitored home alarms, along with

CCTV and other security products. They have also installed CCTV into a national chain of tyre stores with more than 90 branches, mainly for health and safety purposes. For on-farm security, Smartway has developed various methods of protecting farms including: • Fuel tank alert systems that will notify the farmhouse when someone is in the vicinity of or obtaining at the fuel tanks. In addition, they can add a module that sends a text message

These report back to a base station in the farmhouse, which can be up to 800m away (line of sight). When connected with a CCTV System, they can also send an email alert • CCTV cameras that can read a number plate regardless of headlights or spotlights on a vehicle and cameras that ‘see in the dark’ and can revolve around the yard to cover implement sheds, etc • GPS tracking devices that can be installed on tractors, quad bikes and other vehicles “We have had a lot of success with

these systems that give the rural owners peace of mind that they will be alerted when there is a problem,” said Roger. Smartway also has a high-tech CCTV surveillance truck they can bring out to show the cameras in action. “It is far superior to see the screen with the camera looking at your own driveway than a picture of that camera on a piece of paper. This vehicle is a one of a kind and well worth a look.” So there we have it, whether it is for health and safety, security or just simple staff training, a good CCTV System can save you lots of money. BUSINESS PROFILE

Grandpa’s poultry feeders Bill and Jean Kirkham had years of frustration losing chicken feed to sparrows, rats and mice until a burst of creativity led Bill to design an automatic chicken feeder he called Grandpa’s Feeders. Bill invented the product around 1995, designing different prototypes to get it right. After many attempts with wood, he eventually moved to sheet metal and hit the jackpot. Bill’s son Mark and daughter-in-law Alla have now taken over the business and helped develop the company further. “Grandpa is coming up to 92 years old and is very proud of how well the business is doing,” says Alla. “He came along to the Fieldays® for many years to chat to people about his inventions. We have now branched out

overseas with Grandpa’s Feeders being sold in the USA, UK and Australia. “For thousands of clients, Grandpa’s Feeders have significantly decreased the loss of feed to vermin and wild birds, which are not only taking the valuable food supply but also spread disease.” In recent years the family has added poultry drinking cups to the range. “We use a company in Hamilton to make them, and they are a huge success. It screws into a 20-litre unit and automatically refills one tablespoon of water at a time. There is no more messy or spilt water — giving the hens

A day in the field tomorrow

by Andy Bryenton

On a crisp rural morning in the Waikato, not too far from now, a farmer sleeps while the conditions for frost fall into place out amid his orchards. There’s no need to wake up, however; in another room, a computer reading a battery of weather gauges has just activated misting sprinklers to create a frost-stopping fog in just the right places. While he eats breakfast, drones deploy from their solar-powered hutches to monitor the cattle, scanning them by infra-red to check for signs that could point to illness or injury. If there’s an alert flag, a message will go to the farmer’s vet before he finishes his toast and jam. These same drones count the herd, watch for stragglers, and can even report when cows are in heat. Irrigators come online as the day heats up, and a pair of big electricpowered tractors roll out to complete the day’s undersowing. One machine harrows the soil and aerates, taking tests with probes that will be sent to the farmer’s fertiliser suppliers.

Another cabless, camera-mounted tractor follows, laying out rows of complementary crops, no longer one to a field, but a combination which can be sown together and eventually harvested together, with the payload separated and sent to different hoppers. This method is on trial right now in Germany, thanks to a new generation of seed drills that can put each individual seed at the right depth, charged with a shot of the right fertilisers and nutrients. The fields they grow in will be spotsprayed by drones to prevent disease and irrigated when probes in the ground detect a lack of moisture. Of course, the plants are bred to be pest-resistant.

Across in the orchard, doublehulled robots like Naio Technologies’ ‘TED’ weed beneath the crops. Later, machines will take in the harvest, too, maybe based on Kiwi-built Smart Machine grape pickers, developed in Blenheim. At the same time, cattle wait their turn outside pods like large photo booths, each of which contains an automatic milking station. The bovine ‘customers’ deliver milk with no human involvement, and an RFID collar gathers data on their output, health, feed intake and condition. Gates open and close

automatically as the herd heads back to pasture, following another drone with blinking lights. The farmer does his rounds on a hydrogen-powered quad that’s unable to tip over or roll thanks to tech developed for motorcycle racing by BMW. All this action feeds into a tablet, which effectively offers control over every system on the farm. Above, satellites monitor the weather for tomorrow. Quietly, the farmer misses the days when he needed a dog by his side; at least the conversation was better.

When the original hot hatchbacks of the 1980s hit the scene, they were a breath of fresh air due to being a new concept. Small, agile, easy to park and with a grin-engaging turn of speed, cars like the Golf GTi and Toyota Starlet delivered economical thrills. They also delivered economical horsepower. Looking back from the present day, when three hundred horses is seen as the benchmark for a sporty machine, the hundred or so ponies packed under the hoods of those early hatchbacks looks positively wimpy. On paper, at least. Take a spin, and you’ll still find yourself smiling ear to ear. Why? Power to weight ratio. That is why the news of a Can-Am Commander side-by-side off-roader with a 100hp Rotax engine is on a par with advice that chocolate now helps you lose weight. When it comes to having fun, a small, light and nimble machine with 100 horses to unleash is going to do the business like very little else. Now, to be certain, Can-Am has also developed the 2021 Commander for serious stuff. It’s factory-fresh with the biggest cargo bed in its class, and the ability to tow 900kg comes as standard. Can-Am engineers have made this version of the Commander safer, more sturdy, more rigid, and more featurepacked than any before. Most of all, though, you can imagine the lab-coated and flat-capped folks with their rulers and pencils waiting to finish designing the new Commander so they can have a turn out in the mud. Antidive geometry and arched suspension

2021 Can-Am Commander promises lightweight, agile handling and more power than your dad’s hatchback — what’s not to love?

arms front and back combine with a tiny turning circle and some serious long-travel shocks to deliver telepathic handling and the ability to obliterate rough terrain. While the Commander is certainly competent and well equipped for rural

chores, it’s apparent from its sheer aggressive look and stance that it’s waiting to let loose and have some fun as well. A tubular frame, a peppy engine with more punch than those good-times ‘80s hatchbacks, and a whole lot of

practicality as well? The question isn’t whether Can-Am has a handle on how to make off-roaders. It’s when they are going to combine the on-road abilities of the Spyder and the lightweight joy of the Commander to make a street-legal car that would surely rival the Ariel Atom.

Passing the toughest tests Prolan’s new lanolin Extreme product is proving to be a successful natural rust protection solution for some of the toughest testing grounds around to protect equipment and machinery exposed to fertiliser, sand, salt and mud. Local Ashburton company Green Fertiliser Spreading director Darren Green says: “It’s fantastic! I always had an A+ rating at the vehicle testing station without it. Now, they want to give me a higher rating.” The Extreme product is new in the Prolan range manufactured in New Zealand using sheep’s wool lanolin. It was initially developed for the Danish offshore turbine windmill industry as long-term natural rust protection with a less tacky finish. Extreme has proved itself as once applied it stays on and protects in harsh environments, reducing maintenance costs, and at the same time, it ticks the boxes for environmental friendliness. Closer to home in New Zealand, the product has proved successful in the fight against corrosion for the Ninety Mile Beach spat farming industry. Loaders are coated to prevent corrosion from a harsh salt-water environment. Vehicles can be water blasted after the vehicle has been exposed to beach conditions and the Prolan product stays on. Operators recommend a Prolan coating as a crucial part of their maintenance programme, reducing downtime in maintenance and component replacement with improved WOF and COF pass rates and resale value on machinery. Rust is an ever-present problem. Prolan is effective in shutting off the supply of oxygen to a surface. It can be used on areas where existing rust is present and

Animal refuge a step closer

New Zealand’s first shelter dedicated to providing a temporary safe haven for pets while their owners escape abuse is due to open in the near future. Pet Refuge is the brainchild of Julie Chapman, Founder and CEO of children’s charity KidsCan. The initiative comes as research from Women’s Refuge reveals harrowing stories of animal abuse. “For many people, pets are family. For victims of domestic violence, they provide real solace. Leaving them behind with an abusive partner just isn’t an option,” says Julie. Both of Julie’s parents died in the last five years, and she has used the money from the sale of their home to purchase land to create Pet Refuge. With further private donations, construction is now almost complete thanks to further private funding and build partner, Signature Homes, which has also designed the shelter. “We hope that if victims know their pets will be well looked after while they escape, it will remove a barrier to them leaving. Women’s Refuge surveyed women whose partners had abused or threatened their pets. Twenty-three per cent said their partner had killed an animal, while 53 per cent said they delayed leaving the relationship out of fear for an animal’s safety. “New Zealand has the highest rate of reported family violence in the OECD and the second-highest rate of pet ownership globally. When the two coexist, animals can pay a large price. The survey respondents shared stories

of pets being shot, assaulted, starved and tortured. “These include statements such as he strangled my cats almost on a daily basis. He took my two young sons and shot the pups dead while the boys watched, and he threatened to slit the dogs’ throats if I left. “Pet Refuge is modelled on the RSPCA New South Wales’ successful domestic violence programme. We will transport small animals from around New Zealand to the shelter, and we have 60 people volunteer their land for safe farms to pull together a foster network. “We are now working to make the grounds of the shelter a tranquil environment for pets who may come to the shelter in a distressed state. “We have a fundraiser underway to purchase native plants to provide a shaded, protected environment to provide the animals in our care the privacy they need to heal and recover until they can be reunited with their owners.” Pet Refuge has partnered with Women’s Refuge, Shine and Shakti to assist pets via referrals. “Essentially, the pet becomes yet another mechanism for the abuser to use, and pets are frequently harmed or even killed in order to assert power, and further traumatise victims,” says Women’s Refuge CEO Dr Ang Jury.

Pet Refuge will provide a safe haven for pets of all sizes to be able to leave abusive situations alongside their owners

Senior sergeant Fiona Roberts, NZ Police’s National Family Harm coordinator, says: “Women’s Refuge enables victims and families to remove themselves in a time of crisis. Pet Refuge will be key to helping facilitate

HIGGINS.CO.NZ

The edge marker posts along the highways and local roads in the Waikato region are frequently run over and damaged by vehicles. Edge marker posts along our roads provide important guidance for drivers showing the road geometry ahead. Curves and dips along the road can make it hard to see the road ahead, especially at night time. Edge marker posts stand above the road surface so they can be seen from far away even when the road surface and markings are not visible. They don’t get obscured by dirt and debris in the way that road marking or raised reflective pavement markers can.

Edge marker posts are also fitted with reflective devices to make them visible for night time drivers. Vehicle crashes at night in highspeed rural areas cause a tragic loss of life and major injuries. Edge marker posts are known to reduce crashes by up to 18%, particularly at night. Action on environment and climate by Paul Campbell

Beef+Lamb New Zealand is updating farmers and the wider public on key environment policy issues it is working on in collaboration with other agricultural industry organisations, with climate change an important direction for planning. “We are continuing to argue for a pause on the introduction of any new environmental regulation, in particular on biodiversity, says CEO Sam McIvor. “The National Policy Statement for Indigenous Biodiversity has been delayed by the government twice now, and we’re pushing for it to be delayed until at least the end of the year. “Farmers have enough to deal with on water and climate change, and now is not the time to introduce new rules. We’re also working on changing the original proposals in the Biodiversity NPS,” Mr McIvor said. “There has been a really positive farmer response to our new farm plan workshops, and almost all the workshops we’ve set up so far have been fully subscribed.” He said there was a substantial amount of ongoing work on a number of climate change-related issues in collaboration with others. “We’re continuing to push for limits on forestry offsets for fossil fuel emitters so that no more productive farmland is converted into carbon farming. It’s

critical there is action on this as the rate of sales of farms into carbon farming has been accelerating as the carbon price continues to increase. “There is growing support for limits on forestry offsets. The Climate Change Commission recommended this in their recent draft policy advice and, in their submission to the commission, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment put forward concrete policy options to limit forestry offsets. “We will shortly be releasing a free greenhouse gas calculator that will help farmers easily measure their emissions and offsets from their exotic and native vegetation. “There is also genuine farmer concern that under the government’s proposed Certified Freshwater Farm Plan, farmers’ personal or business information may be publicly discoverable. We absolutely share the concern and are working hard with other agricultural organisations to ensure this can’t happen. It’s Beef+Lamb’s top priority to get the best policy outcomes for farmers.”

Helping osteoarthritis: Chondroitin sulphate by John Arts, Abundant Health

A significant research study (Wildi et al, 2011) that confirmed the benefits of high dose chondroitin sulphate (CS) for joints affected by osteoarthritis. This week we dig a little further. I have no doubt that the correct dose of high-grade CS is the most important natural compound to help joints affected by osteoarthritis. As an example, I have been helping a man with osteoarthritis in both knees. The pain levels had become quite debilitating. We started with a booster dose of 1,600mg of high-grade chondroitin with the same amount of glucosamine and 400mg of high potency curcumin (from turmeric). After three months, the pain level had significantly reduced and is now mobile again. More recent research from the British Medical Journal (May 2017) compared high-grade chondroitin with common anti-inflammatory medication and found that 800mg of CS was beneficial. Researchers commented: “This compelling benefitrisk profile, in light of the known clinical risks associated with chronic usage of NSAIDS and paracetamol, underscores the potential importance

of pharmaceutical-grade [chondroitin sulfate] in the management of knee [osteoarthritis], especially in the older population requiring longterm treatment.” The question is, how can it help? What does it do to arthritic joints? Researchers have found that CS has multiple benefits. Firstly it helps regulate inflammatory processes within the joint capsule. Secondly and more importantly, it helps specialised cells that reside in cartilage called chondrocytes. CS improves the ability of chondrocytes to secrete and repair cartilage. This comes as no surprise as CS is an important component of cartilage. I have worked with so many people with osteoarthritis that I am genuinely surprised if we cannot get an improvement within three months. For questions or advice, contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Join his allnew newsletter at abundant.co.nz.

Tuatara Machinery Limited is a New Zealand company that has been producing side-by-sides under the Tuatara brand for more than seven years to produce a workhorse that is strong and reliable and built for commercial use on farms. It has proved to be a challenging task given the range of very demanding terrain presented on farms throughout the country. Moreover, of course, many farmers push the capabilities of a sideby-side to the limit and beyond, and servicing is probably done when the vehicle breaks. These facts are taken into account with the design of side-by-sides. However, the balance is in producing something that is very strong while at the same time does not have the characteristics of a tank. In the case of the Tuatara side-by-side, our approach has been to produce a machine that is primarily constructed of steel for the strength, as opposed to plastic, which becomes brittle and breaks easily when exposed to ultraviolet light and is expensive to replace. We have also placed an emphasis on simple engineering and ease of access to componentry so that our vehicles are easy to service, even by the customer, and the time spent in doing so is considerably reduced. The process of introducing a new sideby-side to the market has come with its challenges in terms of selecting the best and most robust components for the vehicle. The benefit that we have over

Good fencing is key to keeping animals in the right place and the peace of mind knowing livestock assets are secure. Like many farmers, Colenso Station sheep and beef farmer Tom Platts tackles new fencing, and repairs and maintenance, with existing farm labour. “As a non-income generating activity, fencing is not what most farmers want to be doing with their day. We use Stockade’s ST315i cordless batten stapler. It is much easier to maintain great fences and focus on revenue-driven work on the farm. “Our fences are up to a pretty good standard, and with fewer labour costs, we are able to spend more on materials and get a lot more done.” Tom has a good system going converting the station’s four-wire electric into nine-wire conventional fencing. Tom and his farm labourer, Hunter, work together. One with the ST315i, the other handles the bungy and set square. The team gets through a full day’s work before morning tea. “I would say this tool is five times faster than stapling by hand, and by the time you have paid the labour for someone hand-stapling, the ST315i would only take about 20 hours to pay for itself. It makes fencing far less of a chore, and it’s earned its keep.” For Richard Grey’s team at Hakataramea Station in Kurow, fencing is one of those in-between jobs throughout the year. Stockade’s ST400i post stapler and ST315i batten stapler take away the impact stress from repetitive manual hammering and fastening. The tools are designed to make fencing faster, easier and safer, helping farmers to tackle those fencing jobs with confidence and freeing up time and energy for more jobs on the farm.

Recognition for Maori farmers

The winner of this year’s Ahuwhenua Young Maori Farmer Award for dairy is 26-year-old Quinn Morgan in his first season of farming for Sam and Kate Moore on their 155ha farm in Otaki. The property is milking 570 cross breed cows through a 36-a-side shed and is on system three. Tataiwhetu Trust, located in the Ruatoki Valley, took out top place. The organic dairy farm runs 432 Kiwi cross cows and carries 188 replacement stock on two support blocks. Milking once a day, the herd produces 129,140kgMS. Other finalists were Pouarua Farms and Tunapahore B2A Inc. Pouarua Farms consists of 4,600 cows run on nine separate farms located near the township of Ngatea. The 2,200ha platform is the largest single dairy platform in the Hauraki region producing approximately 1.65 million kgMS. Tunapahore B2A Incorporation is a 385 cow operation located at Hawai

and Torere. The milking platform is 132ha, with 385 cows producing 125,940 kgMS. “The standard of all the finalists this year was particularly high, and the judges had their work cut out to come up with a winner,” said Ahuwhenua Trophy Management Committee chairman Kingi Smiler. “The field days run by all the finalists were extremely good and showed the quality and depth of Maori dairy farming enterprises. Each finalist excelled, and all are great role models for farmers. “In the end, Tataiwhetu Trust were determined the winners. They and their staff are to be congratulated for this. Their farm is very special and is yet another example of our people working

On a three-year rotational basis, the trophy is competed for by Maori in the sheep and beef, horticulture and dairy sectors.” In 2010 Tataiwhetu Trust, then called the Ngatirongo Trust Farm, received the

Ballance Farm Environment Award for the creation of special places on the farm. This included the protection and enhancement of wetlands, landscape features and historical places. A year later, in collaboration with Tuhoe Putaiao, the trust received the Green Ribbon Award for protecting biodiversity. In 2014 the trust changed names to the Tataiwhetu Trust. That year it was presented with the Fonterra Gold Grade Free Certificate in recognition of excellence for consistent supply of the highest quality milk. In 2015 the trust transitioned from convention milking to organic and is now fully certified by AsureQuality. In 2019 it received the Fonterra Organic certificate.

by Ann van Engelen

At nine years old, Pipiwai farm girl and Northland Rescue Helicopter ambassador Madison Macmillan has released her third book in the Good Baby children’s series called the Good Baby and the Unicorn. Madison published her first book in 2018 at seven years old called The Good Baby and The Bad Hippo, which she wrote on her way home from school one day. She released The Good Baby and the Hairy Monster in 2019 and has, so far, donated $1,000 of book sales to the Northland Rescue Helicopter Service. “When I was in year two, my teacher read a book about a Bad Baby and a Good Hippo, and it inspired me,” says Madison. “I liked the way the author wrote and how my teacher expressed it. I came up with the Good Baby idea on the way home from school. The Bad Hippo story is about being honest and the Hairy Monster in the second book is my cat, Boris. “My friend and I came up with the unicorn idea as we go on adventures together on my family farm. The Good Baby and the Unicorn is about the unicorn not having many friends because he looks different with a horn on his head. “They become friends and rescue a tadpole in a storm and put it back into its home. The tadpole is also different. I hope the book helps people take care of others who may be different. “I donate money from my book sales to the Northland Rescue Chopper so

they can buy things they need to rescue people. Over the years, the rescue chopper has helped people all over the country.” The Good Baby series is available to purchase at $12.50 each plus postage by emailing steve@commsuite.co.nz. “Living on a farm, I know the chopper can get to remote places easier and faster than ambulances, and they can drop a person down on a harness to help if need be.

“I come up with ideas from things around me. My next book is the Good Baby and the Naughty Grandma, and the fifth book will be the Good Baby and the Kauri Snail. Adam, my dad’s friend, does the artwork. He is a fireman, and having him help is really nice. “I also like taking care of the sheep and chickens, playing hockey and doing gymnastics. “I love living on the farm and helping my grandad move the cows, feed out the

hay, and going around the property on my go-kart to do my chores. “I hope other young people will try writing as well, even if they don’t publish their books. “I think as I grow older, I will write a chapter book but am not sure I will publish it.” We have two The Good Baby and the Unicorn books to give away. To be in to win, tell us at comp@integrity.nz who the Good Baby and the Unicorn rescues.

ADVERTORIAL

Getting the best advice by Michael Prestidge, Nevada Effluent Management Specialist

The Nelson family has a proactive mindset when it comes to their long-established family farm in Te Kauwhata, North Waikato. When Daniel saw they were outgrowing their effluent management system, he did his research and sought specialist advice to invest in a system that would future-proof the farm. “We’re a long-established family farm, and we like to stay abreast of new developments,” he says. Previously a sump collected effluent from a feed pad with a barrier ditch, which was then pumped out to travelling irrigators. Although the system worked, with the growth of the farm, the system was starting to strain. Daniel contacted Nevada, and Mike took a visit out to the farm to see how it all operated and discuss Daniel’s long-term goals for the property. That was to use the effluent more effectively and efficiently. The first issue to address was storage. The sump was no longer enough to safely store all the effluent during times where spreading wasn’t an option. So a large HDPE lined pond was installed along with a Nevada electric stirrer to keep the effluent well mixed and prevent nutrients

separating out and accumulating at the bottom of the pond. The effluent then drains back into the sump, ready for spreading. The pond is great for storage during the wet months, so it can be spread when it’s most needed. Keeping the sump in use means if there was any sediment, it would be drained by the sump and sucked out by the new 14,700L Nevada slurry tanker. There’s less strain on the pump and irrigation system, and no nutrients are going to waste. Daniel chose a 14,700L slurry tanker as it was the most efficient size for spreading the effluent over the entire farm without needing to make multiple trips back to the sump. “It’s great! Now we can spread anywhere. I was surprised how easy it is to pull. We’re pretty happy with it all. It’s met our goals of future-proofing the farm, so we’re not worried about issues cropping up, and we’re making more effective use of the nutrients. The system is efficient and fast, so it’s not a drain on time. It’s been well worth the investment.”

Growing up rural

MAY 2021

39

by Deb Wright

Growing up in small-town New Zealand with most of my friends living on farms, was an amazing way to grow up. My dad was a stock agent and also managed the local golf course’s farm. I remember going on a lambing beat with him when I was probably 9 or 10. His instruction was to look for any sheep that I think might be stuck (cast) or in trouble, but what I saw were many lambs that had lost their mothers. I couldn’t carry them all back, which was very upsetting; however, I did manage to carry six back to him. The look on his face as I walked up with all these cute motherless lambs was of utter shock. I can still see the look now 40-plus years later. He did explain that mothers leave their lambs to go and eat and that I would need to take them all back. I wasn’t sure I believed him, but I did as instructed, thinking my dad was so cruel. No surprise the next day — no motherless lambs. My interest in farming started for real as an 11-year-old, meeting a hairdresser named Dawn in my mum’s shop in the village. Yes, an odd start to farming, but a start nevertheless! She sheared sheep as a sideline job, so I joined her in the sheds as a ‘rousie’ or helped with penning up. Though it wasn’t my favourite thing to do, it was something that just kept building my interest in farming. Once I left school and couldn’t find work in town, I spent a lot of time with Dawn and her husband Pete on their farm. I learned to ride horses, drive tractors, Land Rovers and threewheelers, drench and shift stock, and

so much more. Learning to drive was horrendous for both the Land Rover and the driveway, not to mention Pete. I’m not sure how many times I slid the Land Rover into the fence and had to be pulled out, or the fact that I wore a new driveway in, while getting the mail. While I stayed with them, I met her brother Buster, and my farming life started for real. One of my most vivid memories has little to do with farming, but the cleaning of farming clothes and a temper tantrum to behold! It’s a wonder I didn’t become single right there and then. We had a wringer washing machine that ate washing no matter how careful I was and this day it ruined my favourite T-shirt. Buster heard the foul language and saw clothes flying out the door as I beat up the washing machine. I’m not sure if he felt sorry or was scared of me, but a new washing machine arrived the next day. I also spent a lot of time in Oparau with the family. So many laughs and so many days in woolsheds sorting wool, or in the sheep yards, drenching and listening to Trevor working his dogs and Jill wrangling stock, as well as four small, very boisterous boys and feeding anyone that walked through the door. These are some of my very early memories of growing up rural. It was amazing, and although I no longer farm, I still live in rural New Zealand and wouldn’t trade that for anywhere else.
