Career opportunities in focus

Fieldays and the Ministry for Primary Industries are hosting the Careers Hub to provide a platform for students, job seekers and industry professionals to connect and learn more about the many different career pathways available in the food and fibre sector.

“Our food and fibre sector continues to power New Zealand’s economy, with export revenue hitting more than $53 billion last year,” says MPI director-general Ray Smith.

“Food and fibre sector careers range from work on-farm, in science, technology, business management and logistics, to animal welfare, marketing, and research and development across the country. We’ll have a series of inspiring speakers each day from 9.30am–2pm, featuring panel discussions and TED talk-type presentations, showcasing the sector, the roles and various opportunities.

“Eleven organisations with a keen focus on future growth and education will also be featured in the Hub, which builds on the success of our Opportunity Grows Here attraction campaign that’s connecting Kiwis with sector jobs.”

Fieldays CEO Peter Nation says: “The food and fibre sector future is exciting. Innovation and the evolving ways of farming mean there will be new jobs and new possibilities in the future.”

In addition to the Hub, the Opportunity Grows Here Careers Trail will provide visitors with an interactive experience to see career pathway opportunities and engage with potential employers.

“Creating the pathway for visitors to learn about the many different career opportunities available in the sector, from hands-on roles in agriculture and

horticulture to technical roles in science and technology, really proves that opportunity grows here at Fieldays,” says Mr Nation.

“To ensure the success of our food and fibre sector, we need the right people. Our Careers Trail will be a valuable resource for our visitors and sector employers by creating important, and potentially lifelong, careers and connections.”

Research and product development are long-term investments, and Fieldays programme manager Steve Chappell says: “We see companies needing to think smarter and be more efficient when times are harder. Data collection and measuring tools, management apps, and a big focus on environmental reporting are also topical currently.

“The short turnaround since Fieldays 2022 means this year’s entries will really be hot off the press. We expect entries from all around the world in the food and fibre sector.”

The Fieldays Innovation Awards are an opportunity to showcase an idea or innovation, receive feedback from Fieldays visitors, and connect with potential partners, distributors, investors and the New Zealand innovation ecosystem.

Entries are encouraged from across the primary sector, which refers to: dairy, meat and wool, forestry, horticulture, including viticulture, seafood and associated technologies.

New helm for national Fieldays event

The first lady president in the 55-year history of the New Zealand National Fieldays Society, Waikato farmer and businesswoman Jenni Vernon, will lead the way at this year’s event after her election at their recent annual general meeting.

Jenni farms a dry stock unit in partnership with her husband Gordon and son Simon, at Te Akatea, in northwest Waikato. Initially training as a teacher, Jenni has spent more than four decades in farming and governance.

She was also the first female Nuffield Scholar and the first woman chair of Environment Waikato. Her first encounters with Fieldays, date back to her New Zealand Young Farmers days when she helped with car parking. Years passed by, and Jenni has been on the board for 10 years, and vice president for the past three years. Her role governs the society, which owns and operates Mystery Creek Event Centre. It is also the owner of Fieldays established as the Southern Hemisphere’s largest agricultural event.

“This organisation has a proud history of delivering world-class events, including Fieldays. In the past 55 years, many before me have worked hard to create what we now see before us. As a large part of my career has been involved in agriculture, it seems natural for me to continue to contribute to the society, supporting the growth in agriculture through our purpose of advancing the primary sector.”

Jenni takes over the reins from outgoing president James Allen, who following the rules of the society has completed his third and final year as president.

“As a volunteer board member, James provided leadership during the incredibly uncertain times of Covid and his tenure was met with a mixture of extreme challenges, but he navigated these while also running his own business.”

Jenni is looking forward to working with the new board along with CEO Peter Nation and his management team to continue to deliver on a strong strategic direction and plan for growth.

Quality Transportable Homes

“We have a great team of staff, volunteers and members who are devoted to the cause and outcomes that our organisation contributes to the country’s economy. With some new events coming to Mystery Creek and some exciting plans for the future, we have plenty of work to do.”

Jenni also sits on the NZ Geographic Board, is a Justice of the Peace and an accredited Resource Management Act Hearings Commissioner. She has previously held governance positions with the Waikato River Authority, the University of Waikato and the Waikato Regional Council.

FROM VETERINARIAN TO FARMER

Taking out the 2023 Auckland/ Hauraki Dairy manager of the Year at the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards was a positive experience she says she will remember for a long time.

Finja is a farm manager on Craig and Kathy Maxwell’s Paparimu Valley Farms 190ha Mangatawhiri farm, milking 452 cows.

“I believe the New Zealand dairy industry has huge potential,” says Finja.

“That is one of the major factors of why I switched careers from veterinarian to farming. Dairy farming is not just a job, it’s a way of life and 95 per cent of farmers really care about our cows and land.

“I grew up on a small family dairy farm and it will be exciting to go back and continue on with that farm as a fourth generation dairy farmer. My mum and dad immigrated here in 1989 from Germany with just a suitcase and

purchased their farm after 11 years of being here.

“The good thing about the dairy sector is that it is non-selective and as

long as you work hard you can create opportunity and that is what makes our country different to other places in the world.

Finja Philips accepting the 2023 Auckland/Hauraki Dairy manager of the Year at the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards Finja Philips grew up on a small dairy farm before becoming a veterinarian and changing her career back to dairy farming.

“I think we need to continue to spread our story, share our passion, explain the thoughts, planning and care that goes into our decision-making and continue to share our commitment to making a worldclass product on the export market.

“Being a vet was an awesome job. I worked with some really spectacular people who were very open minded to find sustainable ways to be profitable. I do miss that work but am loving farming.

“Sometimes you can be in another job and miss what you used to do, especially when the small community and team you worked in was so good. At the moment it is my time to be a dairy farmer. I can go back to being a vet one day, but not at present.”

Finja believes everyone is a good farmer in their own way.

“My passion is feeding cows well. I understand the science, and see the science, in what I used to do and know

that the farms that achieve really good milk production from well fed cows also achieve great meat production too.

“Well fed animals are like athletes and will perform, they are amazing. Although sometimes resources are limited, we don’t do anything wildly different here except spend a lot of time and energy feeding cows as well as I can. It is still pretty terrible with the rain, and at present we are working with the flooded parts of the farm but we are free draining so the water goes away quite quickly, others have had it so much worse.

“I would like to be an advocate for the dairy industry because I think we need more people that are happy to communicate what we do, ‘open the farm gates’ and help bridge this everdeveloping rural-urban divide.

“Being aware of where society is moving is important because the rural/ urban divide is becoming a genuine

LOOKING FOR A NEW HOUSE FOR YOUR FARM?

problem. People used to know a farmer of some type but now the two degrees of separation is becoming bigger and some people genuinely don’t know a farmer. The problem is they are misinformed because the media in the past has not been positive and that’s not right.

“People know less than they knew before because they don’t check the information they are given and that’s why I want to be an advocate. Ninety-five per cent of farmers care about their animals, land and everything else. With climate change now, everything we do has emissions so we need to mitigate emissions and have as little impact as possible.

“New Zealand is one of the most efficient food procedures in the world and

I think we need to carry on what we do and improve production per animal with fewer cows and drive performance with well fed cows to produce milk to feed the world and do it better.

“The other thing I am passionate about is being a role model to women in the dairy industry. We need the younger generation to know that we can make it work with children as well. In the future my husband Ryan and I want to return to the family dairy farm and work alongside my parents as we continue to develop the business.

“I want to be on the frontier of change and help pave the way for other women to be sole dairy farmers if their partners work off-farm. Women can do anything.”

Are you are looking for a new home for you or a house to attract the right worker to your farm? We have the solution for you including pre-built houses ready to be delivered now. Come and see us at Fieldays site RM48 to find out how we can help you.

In part one, Dee discussed examples of difficulties people face, including one tradesman she worked with who was excellent at his job, providing his structure was perfect. His van was so well organised his workmates would get what they needed from his vehicle.

“They messed up his structure, even if it was just three open boxes, and he would get behind in his work because he could take two hours to sort his van again,” said Dee.

“I showed him a picture, and he said, ‘that’s me — you captured me completely’.

It was such a precious ‘wow, you got me’ moment, and he understood himself better, and we were able to discuss how he could talk to his employer about his situation.

“There are a lot of misunderstandings. I have ASC people asking how neurotypicals work because they feel they keep stuffing things up, and neurotypical people ask me how neurodivergent work.

“My job became a translator between people, and my book explains each other to each other. One of ASC’s key features is called a social development disorder. A baby is born and appears like any other

baby, but the social part of their brain doesn’t develop or develops poorly. They can learn social literal rules like ‘put your plate on the bench when finished’, but they miss social cues.

“In neurotypicals, only 10 per cent of our communication is actually

words, while 90 per cent is tone of voice, body language, word choice, the emphasis of where words land and so on. Neurodivergence, plus the common lack of eye contact, means that children have difficulty observing, learning and absorbing social cues.

“Neurodiverse ask me to teach them the neurotypical secret code because they just don’t understand. For example, a child may be in the playground sitting on his own, having his lunch. A bigger boy, with his thumbs in a belt loop, walks across with a stare on his face and takes the child’s lunch. Then it happens repeatedly because the child doesn’t pick up the social behaviour and doesn’t know to run.

“The book is written so people can look at the pictures and read the case studies or explanations. It is very understandable, and there is very little reading between the lines. I don’t think

anyone has ever written on neurotypical people, and those on the spectrum want to know how they work.

“Each chapter is self-contained with a little bit of criteria at the beginning of what to look for. There is a beautiful chapter at the end where Aspie people wanted to help others and give their stories. They have been raw, real and open in their personal experiences.

“I wrote a letter to one man’s boss explaining ASC. They knew he had it but didn’t understand it, so I broke it down for them because Aspies are valuable workers. Their work capacity is phenomenal, but it isn’t understood

when they are overwhelmed and not functioning. I have seen very professional people resign and be replaced by three people to do their job.”

ASC isn’t a mental health condition — the brain works differently. Autism is a social development disorder in which people on the spectrum operate differently from neurotypicals.

“Professor Tony Attwood wrote the foreword. He is one of the top three Aspie specialists in the world, and I am honoured that he read the whole book and wrote the foreword. He recommends the book to his colleagues in all professional disciplines with autistic clients.

“My mum said when I was three, she often found me talking to people who were struggling. When I was five, someone explained what a counsellor was, and I knew then that that was what I wanted to do with my life.

“To have finally completed The Aspie Book doesn’t feel real. It certainly was a journey, and I hope that it will make a world of difference to everybody affected in one way or the other.”

LOVE OF THE LAND

Coral Remiro and Warwick Hutchinson are avid gardeners who use organic principles to grow nutritious food for the community and educate people about traditional ways of gardening.

“My grandfather was particularly keen on organic principles, and I spent a bit of time with him,” Warwick says.

“He explained the traditional ways of growing vegetables, like planting by the moon. I wanted to do something with land, and that was the start of getting involved in gardening and farming.

“The organic principles bring the best possibilities for a number of scenarios, including soil regeneration and making sure the plants are healthy. It is about being able to feed people with nutritious food.

“I was brought up in Auckland and studied civil engineering at the University of Auckland. I travelled to Indonesia, where I met my wife, Clare, before going to London. I worked in Holland, Libya and Nigeria and returned to New Zealand when my children were school

age, and I gained employment at a large construction company in Hamilton.

“Twenty-eight years ago, Clare and I began looking for land to create the Waikato Waldorf School. We found five and a half hectares of land, with two and a half hectares used for the school, and the rest exceeded our requirements.

“Four years ago, one of the parents at school said that they wanted to set up a commercial organic farm on the land, and that was the start of Earth Stewards

Limited. Our idea was to grow organic vegetables concentrating on caring for the environment, regenerative processes, nutrition for the community and being a community centre.

“We supply vegetables to our community using the Community Supported Agriculture system, selling earth boxes of organic produce and operating a weekly farm shop. We want to demonstrate how to have a farm in an urban setting.”

Three years ago, Warwick employed Coral Remiro as the head gardener of the operation.

“I was born in Zaragoza, Spain. I was living in London doing interior design and living in a tiny flat,” said Coral.

“I wanted to be outdoors, and there happened to be a charitable farm and education centre near me, so I went there every Sunday to help grow the vegetables, and I wanted to learn more. Leaving Europe, I went to Australia for a year to be a part of World Wide Organic Farming and volunteered in return for board and food as well as worked.

“When I came to New Zealand, the idea was to travel for one year while I

was completing a permaculture design certificate, and then I got the job here.

I started under the umbrella of Warwick and the previous manager before becoming the head gardener.

“Covid made things hard. In the beginning, we opened the farm a couple of times to do tours and shared lunches. We had to pause that, but last year, we did a series of workshops and invited the local community to come and learn about soil microbiology and polycropping to intensify growing and composting.

“Our soils contain a community of microorganisms that have many functions in our ecosystems. It is like the digestive system of a plant that helps bring

nutrients, and that’s what we try to do with polycropping with different species of plants growing in the same space.

“Plants generate exudates, which are the sugars that get sent down into the ground to feed the microorganisms. The more diverse the growing bed is, the more varied the microorganisms are. When you only feed the plants, you bypass the digestive system, and you miss out on a lot of nutrients and cycles that happen in the soil.

“The main way to improve your soil health is by not damaging it with digging, tilling or ploughing and using biologically rich compost. You can put it on your ground or create teas with it to inoculate your soil and plants with microorganisms.

“Earth Stewards is a great opportunity for the land and me to learn. I stayed in Waikato for this farm and am loving it here.”

OPINION

Just because

‘Just because’ was a phrase I used when I did something that might not have been well received by my parents.

“Why did you cut your hair?”

“Just because,” was the response.

It would seem this phrase has been taken to a completely new level. Just because you have a different outlook on life, you are wrong. It’s not wrong, however, if it’s just a differing view.

What is wrong is how people react to differing views or how they feel everyone else should react to them.

We have a government that tells us to think and feel a certain way, and we have other groups or individuals telling us how we should think about or treat others. I don’t know about you, but I’m over it. If I think the sky is green and the grass is blue, so long as I’m not trying to force my point of view on you or hurt you, what does it matter?

I guess that’s the problem, really. There are so many trying to force their view on us, and god forbid if we have an alternative view. In that case, you are ‘wrong’, and they are offended. A lot of those trying to force their views

on others are paid a lot of money to be controversial and cause as much hurt as possible. Often part of their rhetoric is to frighten and promote bigotry. Of course, it is; after all, that sells a lot better than facts.

Reasoned debate is important for society; it’s how we learn and grow, and be strong, cooperating as equals. Accepting differences is equally as important — it’s what makes us good people.

There are so many things wrong in the world today, like war and poverty; surely the colour of someone’s skin or their sexuality is nothing that anyone should ever be worried about, no matter the circumstances and has nothing to do with who they are as people, it’s time to treat everyone the way you like to be treated.

That’s my opinion, of course, and you can take it or leave it. I won’t be offended. Why do I believe it? Just because — I do.

COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS NEWS YOU CAN TRUST

Getting back to farming

For the past six years, I’ve witnessed the proposal or enactment of some of the worst anti-farming legislation ever devised in this country.

No longer are we a proud agricultural nation, with many of the best food producers in world, it seems.

Instead our producers, especially those in red meat and dairy, are the government’s constant target for umpteen rules and regulations as Labour tries to run farms from Wellington.

All this legislation is borne out of simplistic, idealistic views by people who have absolutely no understanding of how rural New Zealand, agriculture, horticulture or arablefarming works.

In fact, we have few members of parliament who do. It’s one of my main drivers for wanting to be there.

In our own party, we have two retiring farmer MPs, Ian McKelvie

and David Bennett. While we may gain more after October 14, having rural voices around the table is an absolute must.

Whichever way you look at it, producing food is what we do. For ourselves, for millions of others around the world, and we’re really, really good at it.

Since 2017, Labour has imposed more than 20 new or updated laws on the farming sector.

So National’s new Getting Back to Farming policy reflects the ‘red tape’ battle farmers have been fighting.

It includes sweeping changes to 19 of the above regulations, improving access to RSE workers, restoring local decisionmaking and offering greater protection to our food producers.

I urge everyone to read it — national. org.nz/priorities.

Awards date set

This year’s Beef + Lamb New Zealand Awards are set to be hosted at Christchurch’s Te Pae Conference Centre on the evening of Thursday, October 19.

“The awards are an opportunity for the red meat sector to come together and celebrate its people and technologies,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand chair Kate Acland.

“We have so much to be proud of, and the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Awards give us the opportunity to shine a light on the many people who contribute so much both locally and nationally.”

Buoyed by the success of last year’s inaugural awards ceremony in Napier, the organising team is looking forward to bringing the event south to Christchurch.

“I encourage anyone with an interest in the red meat sector to mark the date in the diary and book travel and accommodation early. It is a fantastic night, which is guaranteed to make everyone feel very proud of our sheep and beef industry.”

Mrs Acland says nominations for the eight national B+LNZ Award categories open in early June, with judging getting underway in August.

“Start thinking about the people on your farm, within your wider business, in your communities and in regional and national organisations who often work behind the scenes to ensure our industry thrives. When nominations open, put their name forward or self-nominate, it is important we take every opportunity to showcase the fantastic work happening in our sector.”

andMagnesium general health

Science buffs will know that magnesium and calcium are in the same column in the periodic table. It is unsurprising that these two essential minerals control nerve and muscle function.

In muscles, calcium dominates magnesium when muscles contract. Magnesium should then dominate calcium in the relaxation stage. If magnesium is low, then calcium dominates both stages.

the opposite, whereby blood vessels narrow and can then spasm.

Mrs Acland says Farmlands will once again be an awards partner with the support of the category sponsors for the 2023 B+LNZ Awards.

“We are thrilled to have the continued support of Farmlands and the seven other category sponsors who, like B+LNZ, know how important it is to recognise the skills, talent and innovation that make New Zealand red meat industry world-leading.”

For more information about the B+LNZ Awards go to beeflambnz.com/Awards.

What this really means is that inadequate magnesium is a recipe for cramping, stiff, sore and tired muscles. A tell-tale sign of low magnesium is muscle cramps, especially at night. We must be aware that dehydration, low salt intake and some drugs, notably stains, can affect muscles. While muscle cramps are uncomfortable, it is the effects of low magnesium on the heart (cardiac) muscle that are frightening as it can affect electrical impulses and blood ow in the heart.

The best way to think about magnesium is its effects on ‘tubes’ in the body, especially blood vessels.

Our muscles contain tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen and nutrients to our muscles. With suf cient magnesium, our blood vessels should open (dilate) after contraction. Low magnesium does

In our skeletal muscles, this can bring muscle tightness and cramps. In smooth muscle that lines our blood vessels, this can cause blood- ow restriction and can lead to hypertension. It is not just blood vessels that are affected; it is our heart muscle, eyes, lungs, gastrointestinal tract and, in women, their reproductive tracts. That is why magnesium is so helpful for PMS. For people without symptoms, I recommend my multi-mineral/vitamin/ antioxidant complex as it includes magnesium. If you are symptomatic, I recommend adding my triple formula magnesium that combines marine magnesium, magnesium citrate and magnesium glycinate.

Combating hill country erosion

Waikato Regional Council has secured $2.8 million from the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Hill Country Erosion Programme in the latest round of funding announced recently.

The council’s regional HCE programme is in its fourth year, and the new funding helps to extend it into 2027.

Some 43 per cent of Waikato land has a high potential for erosion due to high rainfall, steep slopes and weathered geology. In hill country farming areas, the risk of erosion increases if the land has little protective vegetation or is poorly managed.

An estimated one million tonnes of soil erodes away annually along the western side of the region, from Port Waikato south to Mōkau. Soil erosion can impact the clarity of rivers and waterways, damage farming and other infrastructure, and reduce soil quality and productivity. High sediment levels also impact the in-stream ecology as well as the cultural and amenity values associated with waterways.

Since 2019, the council’s HCE programme has targeted the highest erosion risk areas and supported local farmers and landowners to take protective measures such as retiring, fencing and planting steeper farmland.

Previous funding has been vital to Waiwhakaata Trust’s efforts to prevent erosion. The trust manages 147 hectares of farmland alongside the Moakurarua Stream near Ōtorohanga, which feeds into the Waipā River.

So far, they have retired their steepest land and planted 16,000

trees across 24 hectares, making visible improvements to the surrounding waterways.

“Working with Waikato Regional Council minimised the effort and expense,” said Waiwhakaata Trust chair James Pinfold.

“If we had done this on our own initiative, then costs would have easily run into the hundreds of thousands. The council took care of the paperwork, oversaw all of the operations, and used local fencing operators and suppliers.”

Waikato and West Coasts catchments manager Grant Blackie said the council wants to hear from farmers and landowners with steep hill country erosion issues.

“Our whole strategy relies on working with locals to deliver these environmental and economic outcomes, so we really want people with erosion-prone land to get in touch with us.

“Together with programme partners in the next four years, in priority catchments we can build 253 kilometres of fencing and plant 560,000 native species alongside almost 100,000 exotic species that provide the best defence against erosion.”

Waikato region 3D maps

The first set of highly accurate 3D mapping data for the Waikato region was recently released and is said to be a game-changer for councils and the wider community.

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology is being used to create exact 3D maps of the surface of the entire region.

As part of the Provincial Growth Fund, the LiDAR data capture project will improve Waikato Regional Council’s ability to more accurately model natural hazards and climate change, design better infrastructure, support better land use planning, and improve environmental outcomes for the regional community.

This set of data is Waikato’s first to be published on the Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) Data Service. Remaining data for the region will be released progressively over the next few months, with the entire region to be available by mid-2023.

“LiDAR presents a paradigm-shift for regional councils,” says project technical lead, Waikato Regional Council’s Bryan Clements.

“Previously, we could only access data at sub-catchment scale, other than for small, localised projects. It was either too expensive or impractical to acquire regionwide data at closer scales.

“With LiDAR, we can now support the many business needs working at property scale, consistently across the whole region. Consider the example of waterways. Traditionally, we have overlaid 1:50,000 topographic rivers and streams data over current aerial photography.

“When zoomed in, it is obvious that these mapped lines representing waterways are quite inaccurate. However,

set of data is Waikato’s first to be published.”

with LiDAR, we will use the detailed elevation model to generate highly accurate waterways that are reliable at property scale — the mapped stream will closely align with what you see in the photo.

“We are excited by the opportunities this provides for regional council core business. Not only will it help us, those benefits will be available to all our regional community through free sharing of whatever we produce. Think coastal care groups, gully restorations, community environmental initiatives, education and research, or farm planners. It is a highly satisfying project to be involved with.”

LiDAR covering 50 per cent of New Zealand, is now freely available. The national coverage will grow to 80 per cent in 2024 when the Provincial Growth Fund — LiDAR project is completed.

Ministerial inquiry implications

The New Zealand Institute of Forestry says the recently announced Tairāwhiti land use inquiry is recommending measures that will stop the very activities which are vital for the region’s recovery.

NZIF president James Treadwell says the Ministerial Inquiry’s report fails to both examine the region’s economic options, nor suggests solutions to mitigate against the effects of climate change.

“The focus is just on dealing just with forest waste, rather than wider land use issues,” he says.

“The call for an immediate halt to clear felling in the Tairāwhiti region is not viable, nor is the recommendation of a 40-hectare harvest coupe limit and green up requirements. This would increase wind throw around clearfell boundaries and likely need more roads to be built.

“The result would be a massive economic loss for forest owners who will have to delay harvesting their blocks and could see increased tree loss from wind throw. The Tairāwhiti community will bear the brunt of the effects from that loss. Without the economic activity generated from forestry, jobs will be lost and reinvesting in infrastructure to mitigate against future storms will be incredibly challenging.”

James says the report also places the onus unduly on overseas forest owners, claiming that these companies have contributed to poor land use and the presence of woody debris.

“Many of New Zealand’s forests are investment partnerships, predominantly New Zealand shareholders and partners, not to say wholly New Zealand owned companies and farm woodlots.

“All forestry companies harbour important community benefits, generating economic activity. They provide one in four people in the Tairāwhiti region with employment. These

companies, whether New Zealand or foreign-owned, must also meet stringent criteria in order to operate.

“Both Huiarua and Matanui Stations mentioned in the report have been planted in a mix of native trees and pines as part of the owner’s corporate responsibility and to ensure integrated land use. Forestry activities in the Waiapu Valley have also seen

the number of pupils at the local school triple.

“Painting these companies and the wider industry as the problem detracts from the larger issue at hand. The report broaches the complexity of Tairāwhiti’s landscape and details the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, but offers no real or specific solutions to land use problems or mitigating the effects of climate change.”

GOVERNANCE JOURNEY AGRICULTURAL

Jessie joined NZYF almost 10 years ago and has gone on to hold several governance positions. She said her governance journey began when she was appointed to Dairy Trust Taranaki as the NZYF-appointed entity in 2019.

“The following year, I was elected to the NZYF board, and this year, I was elected chair of the organisation.”

More recently, Jessie, a member of the Inglewood Young Farmers Club, was elected to Dairy Trust Taranaki as a trustee. She is now the vice chairperson.

“I’ve handed over the baton to the next Young Farmers-appointed trustee.”

Last year, after winning the Emerging Director Award from the Taranaki Institute of Directors, Jessie will sit on the Venture

Taranaki board as an observer for 12 months.

Although Jessie didn’t grow up on a farm, she spent most of her life in rural Taranaki. As a secondary student, Jessie received top marks in agriculture and was often helping out on local farms. She left Taranaki to follow a journalism career in Oamaru. It was while living in the South Island that Jessie joined the Five Forks branch of NZYF in North Otago, holding a number of committee positions.

In 2016, Jessie returned to Taranaki to take up an office management position for Taranaki Federated Farmers. Jessie

also took on the Taranaki Ballance Farm Environment Awards regional coordinator position.

Two years ago, Jessie moved roles to become a regional partner at OSPRI, looking after Taranaki farmers. “This role supports and educates farmers and stakeholders with NAIT and also TB Free.”

As NZYF chairperson, Jessie is looking forward to giving back to the organisation. “Along with running the board meetings and representing the organisation, it’s also about ensuring that everyone’s thoughts on agenda items are heard. Having diverse thoughts around the table is so important.

Jessie is also Dairy Trust Taranaki deputy chairperson As chairperson of the New Zealand Young Farmers, Jessie Waite is focussing on seeing the movement grow into a sustainable organisation.

“In terms of the organisation, the focus will be seeing NZYF continuing to grow into a sustainable organisation that those in the food and fibres sector, and with a passion for what we do, see huge value in being part of.

“I look forward to growing my skills in governance, especially in the leadership space. We have independent directors on the NZYF board who have an incredible amount of experience and knowledge, so soaking up as much of that from them will be invaluable.”

In 2018 Jessie was one of three recipients in the NZYF Excellence Awards. She also held several NZYF club and regional committee positions.

“I have stepped back from committee roles since joining the board, but the clubs and regions around the country have some

amazing leaders within their committees. It’s neat to see members take on these roles.”

She is a board representative on the NZYF content subcommittee too. “This committee focusses on the direction of FMG Young Farmer of the Year and ensuring it’s a showcase of the best young farmers from around the country.”

In her time with NZYF, Jessie said it is the people she has enjoyed the most.

“I truly value the friendships I have made around the country through connections made at NZYF events and at club level.

“The focus for 2023, personally, will be making the most of my time left with the organisation. Come the AGM in July, I will be leaving due to being aged out. I don’t think it’s sunk in yet after being an active member for nearly 10 years.”

Jessie plans to take up new opportunities and continue to grow her skills within leadership, both in governance roles and at work.

“I’m really proud to be part of the food and fibres sector. New Zealand is one of

the most efficient when it comes to farmers and growers, and it comes down to the incredible people we have in our sectors.

“New Zealand Young Farmers has such a rich history and I have been proud to be on this leg of the journey.”

Lasting durability that’s chemical-free

Customer’s 21-year-old boat batteries still running

“At last year’s Feildays, we had a customer who told us his launch batteries had ‘made in 2001’ stamped on them and still running ne. He said he had bought some Recharge off me at a boat show at Mystery Creek many years ago, and he thought his boat batteries had had four or ve doses since then.”

Woodshield posts are non-toxic, durable and BioGro certified

With the rigidity and strength of wood, with the toughness and resilience of plastic, increase the post’s strength and longevity, approximately four to ve times longer, than a treated timber post with a 100% greater breaking angle. Non-toxic, long-lasting and certi ed organic with BioGro since 2011.

No rot, rust, chemical or disposal issues, and we have not had an animal eat one. Completely sustainable, safe for animals and can be installed in and around water, including saltwater.

Vineyard trellis, horse fencing, jetties, playgrounds, lifestyle fencing, orchards, oyster leases — they go anywhere. You’ll find them in Northland, off Waiheke Island, throughout Waikato and Bay of Plenty, across Taranaki, in Wairarapa, around Marlborough, down in Canterbury/Otago and even in Fiordland with DOC being used in the Kakapo breeding programme. Available locally in Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Marlborough — check out woodshield.com.au.

Prevention is the best way to use Recharge. Treat them early, repeat every two to three years and stop the damage from happening because sulphation reduces charge-holding capacity and corrodes internal lead plates eventually killing the battery.

“That same customer had come to see me to get a two-litre to treat his electric forklift batteries, which usually cost $8,000 to $10,000 to replace, so for $300 for a two-litre, it is well worth the effort to maximise the life of those batteries,” Mr Anselmi said.

Gerard and Debbie will be at the National Field Days again this year onsite D-122 as usual, or you can purchase the two-litre online for $360. It is far cheaper at the Fieldays; however, as there is no DG freight, so see us there.

The two-litre treats 42 x N-70s or about 20 bigger truck batteries; that’s about $7 to treat an N-70zz. Please visit our website recharge.net. nz, for more information. Recharge is also available at some Farmlands stores but unfortunately, not all due to freight costs.

Yes, you can treat sealed batteries. Simply drill into each cell, treat, and reseal with Sika ex auto — polyurethane windscreen sealant, is best. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like fork hoists, golf carts, scissor hoists and standalone power system batteries. Email gerard@recharge.net.nz for more information.

Fire suppression solutions

Fire poses a substantial risk to almost all industries, and the rural sector is no exception,

extra challenges to business integrity due to remoteness.

DSPA re suppression can go a long way to mitigate these risks, from vehicle protection, equipment protection, specialised cabinet re protection to fullstand-alone room protection for storage and operational areas of the operation.

DSPA is a dry powder aerosol which is cost-effective, non-toxic, non-corrosive, non-conductive, and safe for humans and animals. It is a potassium-based product that interferes with the re chain to suppress a re quickly while maintaining class-leading hold-times to prevent re-ignition.

We can offer fully integrated systems and passive detection options to protect vital systems and equipment required for daily running of rural businesses.

DSPA covers three main areas of re protection and re classi cations A-F.

Room/Flood Protection

Perfect for switch rooms, generator sheds, storage and other enclosed spaces that contain equipment that is vital to the business both fully integrated or standalone options.

Handheld Protection

DSPA has a range of handheld units that are extremely simple to use. Perfect for enclosed spaces, simply put the pin, toss

it into the room and walk away. There is no need to get involved in ghting the re.

Cabinet Protection

Switch boards and electrical cabinets can be protected internally with a DSPA unit speci ed to the space. So, if there is an event the unit will go off and suppress the re before there is a chance for it spreading to other hardware.

A small fire in equipment or switchboards can spread very quickly

into other areas. Rural remoteness and often volunteer re services can see signi cant delays in any response.

Enhancing rural support

The New Zealand Rural Support Trust is responding to the increase in demand for its services with the announcement of the inaugural general manager Maria Shanks.

As farmers and growers continue to face increased pressure as a result of adverse events and economic hardship, they are reminded that the Rural Support Trust is a collective of 14 regional trusts which offer a free, confidential service to rural farming communities to help during times of crisis.

SITE S24

“In addition to the projects we’ve been working on, we have been collaborating with Moreni agriculture machinery, and later this year we will be bringing something exciting to the table in regards to some of the world’s leading power harrows. Keep an eye out for that.

“Check out our website and get in contact with one of our friendly team members for any enquiries at agandcivilmachinery.co.nz or contact Jared 027 489 8720, David 027 302 0080 or Bruce 027 942 0333.”

The newly created position is aimed at streamlining the trust’s efforts and ensuring on-the-ground support remains widely accessible to those who need it. Previously, Maria’s role as an extension manager for Beef + Lamb NZ saw her working collaboratively with the Waikato branch of the Rural Support Trust. Prior to that, she worked in agri-banking.

“We are very excited to have Maria join us,” says national chair Neil Bateup.

“Alongside her previous rural industry experience, it was clear to us that she is passionate about helping rural communities and encouraging those important conversations around mental health and resilience.

“The past few years has seen unprecedented demand for the help and support the trust provides, from the recent flooding in the north and droughts in the

south, Covid and Mycoplasma bovis, they’ve all taken a huge toll. As a national organisation, we are very aware of the pressures farmers and growers are facing right now and will continue to face in the future.

“As general manager, Maria will focus on strategy and leadership at a national level and maintaining the trust’s crucial relationships with key funders, sponsors, and stakeholders. By having centralised oversight of our national priorities, it will free up capacity on the ground and allow the regional trusts to identify opportunities to further support rural people where it’s needed and ensure no one is left behind.”

Maria says she is looking forward to getting around the country and meeting those involved in the regional trusts to gain an understanding of the valuable work they do, not only during times of crisis but in building resilience for the future.

“Rural life, both farming and growing, will always have its challenges, and our goal is to walk alongside rural people during those tough times and help them come out of it stronger,” she says.

This one’s for real

In 1964, Ford officially unveiled a car which would change the way automobiles were sold, and which redefined their place in the pop culture of America and the rest of the developed world.

That original Mustang took its name from one of the most beloved icons of the US; the wild horses which were tamed by cowboys in the old west. No doubt there were rugged men in stetson hats and leather chaps who looked at pictures of the car, and told each other that it would never be as good as the horse.

It’s funny how history goes, because, of course, the Ford Mustang became the best selling sports car of all time. Now, there’s a new version, and those who love the old, petrol-powered Mustang has divided opinions as to whether the Mach E, an all-electric Mustang, is the ‘real deal’. I’m delighted to announce that in all kinds of ways, it certainly is.

Of course, it’s different. Back in ‘64, Ford wanted to appeal to teenagers and young couples, with a car that promised excitement and freedom. Arguably it was a taller order for the engineers of the new Mach E, who had to wrap up that feeling for power and nimbleness while adding back seats, four doors and a spacious boot. They have, however, once again built a new kind of car. An electric vehicle that’s a joy to drive.

First of all, while it looks different from the original, many of the design cues of the Mustang carry-over. There’s still a sense of speed to this machine, even standing still. You’ll find the cabin to

Ford’s Mach-E Mustang divided international commentators — right up until they drove it be clean, modern and uncluttered, with most controls accessed via a large and crisp touch-screen. The dials are where they should be, and easy to read, and there’s not one feature of information, safety, entertainment or modification left out.

Here, we get to the main thrust of what makes a Mustang. Those who say it’s just a particular big V8 are missing the point. It’s not the presence of a specific power plant; it’s what it enables the car to do.

The Mach E does exactly what a Mustang should; it exhilarates, it surprises, it makes you grin, and it makes the road more interesting to drive on. If anything, it’s a tremendous achievement that Ford’s engineers have managed to make this thing so quick off the mark, and given it the poise to sweep from apex to apex like a sports car, when it’s capable of carrying so much more. There’s a second boot in the front, too, because it’s electric. However, I’d bet that

storage space will not be on your mind when you test the Mach E. Instead, you’ll be thinking about how Ford has achieved satisfying feedback through the wheel, and a suitably muscular sensation of torque and zest, without resorting to the internal-combustion tech they pioneered for a century.

Ford invites you to come to your local dealership and try it out; it’s as far advanced today, as that old ‘64 original was ahead of the horse.

Innovations contest selects finalists

Some of the most innovative ideas and technologies in the agricultural industry will be revealed by the finalists for the 2023 Fieldays Innovation Awards across three categories, with 49 entrants vying for a prize package of cash, services and products.

“It’s fantastic to see entries of such a high calibre again in the award’s 55th year,” says Fieldays programme manager Steve Chappell.

”I’m sure visitors will be wowed by the innovation on display in the Innovation Hub and the Innovation Trail. The awards have been the launchpad for plenty of unique, global-quality, innovative solutions over the years, and this year will be no different.”

This year, finalists ranging from individuals, local Waikato companies, and New Zealand-based global companies to entries from around the world: UK, Australia, USA and Switzerland, have been selected to showcase their innovations in three categories.

“Fieldays has been an integral part of the Riverwatch journey, supporting us through our development, awarding us the Prototype Award in 2017, and the Growth & Scale Award last year. Our company would not be in the position that it is now without this support from the Southern Hemisphere’s largest

agricultural event,” said Abi Croutear-Foy, at RiverWatch.

Twenty-five finalists have been chosen in the Prototype category, offering the critical opportunity to test new products and process development through exposure at Fieldays, three of which are also in the running for the Young Innovator of the Year award for entrants 19 years old and under.

The Early-Stage category, which recognises a primary industry product or service that hasn’t been commercialised for more than 12 months, has seen 16 finalists chosen. Eight finalists have been announced in Growth & Scale, a

category designed to recognise successful innovation products or services looking to grow through new markets, exports or increased supply chains.

“All of the finalists have demonstrated impressive innovation and commitment to the agricultural industry,” said Chappell. “We can’t wait to see who comes out on top to take home the prize packages, a boost that could help them continue to grow and develop their ideas.”

Winners will be announced at the Innovation Awards Function during Fieldays. The finalist’s entries can be viewed at Mystery Creek between 14–17 June.

The new Firearms Registry is coming

New Zealand will have a firearms registry from 24 June 2023. If you’re a firearms licence holder, you’ll be required to provide information about your arms items from this date.

We want to enable the legitimate use of firearms for feeding our whānau, conservation, farming and recreation while keeping our communities safe.

The Registry is one of the ways we’re strengthening how we manage firearms in New Zealand. With responsible firearms licence holders doing the right thing and filling in the Registry, it will help keep track of legally owned firearms and prevent their transfer to those who use them for criminal purposes.

Registry goes live on 24 June 2023

You can quickly and easily register your firearms on our website at any time. Just click on MyFirearms. Otherwise our Registry and Services team will be available by phone to help during business hours.

The Registry will help us make New Zealand safer. It will give licence holders more confidence when buying or selling firearms, as the Registry will let you know if you’re dealing with a current licence holder and if the firearm has been reported stolen.

You must tell us about any firearms in your possession within 5 years.

There will be no charge for registering your firearms.

What

Activating circumstances

You have until 24 June 2028 to register your firearms. However there are some circumstances where you must provide information for the Registry in a shorter time frame. These are referred to in the Arms Amendment Regulations as ‘activating circumstances’. You can find information on these timeframes at: firearmssafetyauthority.govt.nz/registry

Industry awards success

The winners of the New Zealand Dairy Industry winners were announced on May 15, with DairyNZ CEO Tim Mackle awarded the Services to the Dairy Industry Award.

Mr Mackle was presented the award in recognition of his contribution to and advocacy for the New Zealand dairy industry over many years, while Cameron Henderson from Oxford in Canterbury/North Otago was named the 2023 Fonterra Responsible Dairying Award, receiving the John Wilson Memorial Trophy.

Taranaki’s Hayden and Bridget Goble were named the 2023 New Zealand Share Farmer of the Year. Canterbury/ North Otago’s Jack Symes became the 2023 New Zealand Dairy Manager of the Year, and Bill Hamilton from Northland was announced the 2023 New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year.

Hayden and Bridget were described as a power couple who are driven, genuine and focussed dairy farmers. Head judge, John Numan, says Hayden and Bridget impressed the judges with the strength of their partnership.

“Their goals are aligned, and they are genuinely passionate about the community in which they farm and caring for the environment. There is power in their partnership.”

The judges were impressed at Bridget’s on-farm technical knowledge and application.

“She’s a busy full-time doctor, but she is boots-in, and we enjoyed seeing how she makes a positive contribution to their business,” said judge Michele Cranefield, ANZ senior manager.

The runner-up in the Share Farmer of the Year competition is Waikato farmer Aleisha Broomfield, who the judges described as ‘living and breathing farming. It’s in her heart’.

Canterbury/North Otago couple Jonathon and Stacey Hoets placed third in the Share Farmer category, and the 2023 Dairy Manager of the Year is Jack Symes from Canterbury/North Otago. Jack stood out as an intelligent, humble and personable farmer who is focussed on quality all-year round.

“Jack is the full package,” says head judge Renee Rooney from Lake Brunner.

“He gets the grassroots basics right, through to in-depth technical knowledge, including financial acumen.

“He’s analysing all the time, and is thorough with his decision-making and does everything to a very high standard.”

The Dairy Manager runner-up, José Hamber from Manawatū, the judges described José as a family man who has a passion for the dairy industry and his

role within it. Auckland/Hauraki’s Finja Philips placed third.

The 2023 Dairy Trainee of the Year was awarded to Bill Hamilton from Northland, who is described by the judges as a conservationist at heart who enjoys and is succeeding at dairy farming.

The Dairy Trainee runner-up is Brayden Johnston from Canterbury/North Otago, and third place-getter is Sarah Powell from Manawatū.

The ultimate in silage protection

The Secure Cover system ensures stored feed quality is locked in, prevents bird and rodent damage and makes stack management easier.

“With the Secure Cover, farmers no longer need to use the old tyres to hold the polyurethane down on their silage or feed stacks,” says managing director Craig Lipscombe.

“The myth of the need for tyres has been proven false as the Secure Cover gravel bags offer a exible alternative to tyres, being easily lled with river pebbles. They are tied-off with supplied UV treated cable ties.

“The polyethylene UV-resistant netting is placed over a standard polythene sheet and is held down along the seams and edges using Secure Gravel bags. These bags are made from the same material and are lled with recommended river pebbles.”

The dense, strong nature of the knitted cover places it close to the polythene’s surface, reducing lift and minimising unwanted air intrusion, which damages silage quality.

“New Zealand’s high UV levels and the wind we experience can reduce the longevity of plastic-based products, whereas the Secure Covers system comes with a seven-year UV stability guarantee.

“Bird and rodent damage is also minimised, protecting valuable maize and grass silage. Pukeko are a particular nuisance when plastic is used. The dense, tough polyethylene of the Secure Covers is extremely dif cult for pukeko and pests to penetrate.

“While some farmers may prefer to continue using the tyres they have accumulated over the years, it is important farmers keep in mind other

issues, such as hardware disease, that can be harming your stock.

“For more information, go to securecovers.co.nz, call 0800 304 030

Protect your machinery with Lanolin

A small investment to stop rust will lengthen the life of farm machinery like quad bikes, ATVs, trucks, loaders and fertiliser spreaders, to name a few.

The protection comes from Prolan, an iconic by-product of New Zealand’s sheep industry — lanolin. Prolan makes natural, environmentally friendly lubricants and corrosion inhibitors, which are getting noticed on the other side of the world.

Prolan owners Murray and Julie Shaw now export their product to Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, the UK, Netherlands, Canada and even Guam. Prolan is used for wind turbines and cranes and by pump manufacturers and trucking rms.

Prolan NZ Director, Murray Shaw, said the company has an extensive range of products made from lanolin (wool grease), secreted by sheep to protect their eece in harsh conditions. We’ve replicated that action to protect a range of surfaces.

“We spent a lot of money researching how to take the lanolin and blend it with natural products to make industrial lubricants,” says Murray. “I’m so proud of the ground we’ve made in our export markets. We’re well ahead of our competitors. It’s solid progress, and it’s exciting.

“Prolan’s rust treatment more than doubles the life of farm machinery.

A quad bike, for example, costs around $20,000 and often only has a life of four to ve years on a dairy farm. Washing and drying that bike and applying a coating of Prolan will prevent the chassis of that bike (or any other farm implement) from developing rust — effectively doubling or tripling its life.”

The Prolan can be applied by a compressed air paint system and, once dried to a waxy surface, will withstand water-blasting.

“Where paint hardens and cracks as the implement exes under use, the Prolan coating remains exible, preventing any ingress of moisture,” Murray said.

“It’s so versatile — everyone should have a can. We live in a coastal country, so anyone with a motorhome, a boat, a trailer or a quad bike would bene t from the anti-corrosive properties. Even small jobs like a squeaky door hinge or a sticky shower door are an easy x with Prolan.”

It’s also environmentally friendly — taken from nature to protect nature!

High Country Heritage Tours for 2024

NZ Adventures offers a wide range of tours across the South Island of New Zealand.

One of the most popular and longest established tours is the High Country Heritage Tour, which is run once as a seven-day tour and three times as a sixday tour during the season.

The High Country Heritage Tour is the journey down the Eastern Alpine foothills from Blenheim to Cardrona.

The tour includes a wide range of high country stations and conservation estate tracks along a 1,250km route through overnights in Hanmer Springs,

Methven, Fairlie, Omarama, Cromwell and the nal night at the Cardrona Hotel for the six-day tour.

There is a slight variation for the seven-day tour where we have a shorter day on the third day and overnight in Geraldine and the next overnight in Twizel before we resume the overnights in Omarama, Cromwell and Cardrona for the seventh night.

Accommodation is in motels, and meals are predominantly in restaurants

with mostly picnic lunches to enjoy amongst the dramatic scenery.

In the context of a 4WD trip, the tracks are easily enough covered by competent drivers in suitable 4WD vehicles (lowrange transmission) and all-terrain tyres in very good condition. No other special preparation of the vehicle is required.

The seven-day tour in 2024 will nish in time for the start of Warbirds over Wanaka.

Nothing left out, everyone fits in

Seven seats and all of the modern conveniences add up to an excellent package for Mahindra’s new XUV, which delivers more than you expect, no matter what your expectations.

At first glance, the XUV 700 AX7L (as the top-flight model is called) seems to present a showcase of favourite trends from across the top of many other sports utility lines. The flush, body-coloured foldout door handles are pure Tesla, while the white leather interior is distinctly Euro-luxury, and the expansive moon-roof recalls the best of Scandinavian offerings, like the XC90. It’s all tied together into a harmonious package, with styling that borrows from the sketch-pads of Japan and Germany, adopting more flowing lines than its predecessor.

This, however, is a new Mahindra, and that means it has a presence of its own. Every distinctive brand of car must have its own grille, which cuts a silhouette and leads the car from the front. Mahindra has found theirs with a new logo and a new, more modern style in front of the radiator. The confidence this exudes has informed everything throughout the cabin as well, from the compact, comfortable steering wheel to a dash which is better than that on many far more expensive cars.

Under the hood you’ll find 147 kilowatts of power, with lots of low-end torque to propel this generously-proportioned seven seater smoothly. It boasts a quiet and unfussy engine, which communicates with a similarly unobtrusive gearbox to simply let you get on with enjoying the ride. You’ll have ample room to fit everything in the

Mahindra has developed a new style, and added limitless conveniences, safety features, toys and gadgets to their new XUV back; not just youngsters in that third row, but, with the seats folded flat, pretty much anything you like. Additionally, as this is an Indian-made machine, you know it’s been built extra tough, and able to brave the rigours of driving the subcontinent’s harsh roads.

Take the XUV 700 for a test drive, and you’ll note the attention to detail. Yes, it accelerates, brakes, handles and rides like other similar-sized machines on the

market; better, in some cases. However, you’ll notice little extras which make a big difference. The stitched-leather accents on the dash. The little turning camera which comes up between the dials when you take a corner. The way those dials use ‘electronic paper’ technology to stand out crisp and clear with no glare. Innovative places for recharging, storing and securing items.

It’s all very clever, and puts this Mahindra

right on a par with the mainstream field of seven-seat SUVs. It looks sharp, feels well engineered and finished, and even the 12-speaker stereo system is genuine Sony. What makes it a must-see, for potential sport utility buyers, is a price which comes in under $45,000, all up. Try to find a better option with this many luxuries that drives this well. Then, when you concede that the XUV 700 is value for money on wheels, book a test drive.
