funding sources in the near future.” Research funding for myrtle rust will total $5 million over three years, with research for kauri dieback receiving $8.75 million. That is on top of previous research funding of $6.9 million for myrtle rust and $4.7 million for kauri dieback allocated in 2018/19. “Our best researchers will continue to work with their international colleagues, with mana whenua, industry, and communities to develop new ways of reducing damage to vulnerable plants and landscapes, and future-proof them against these and other plant diseases. “This announcement delivers on our coalition agreement with New Zealand First to increase support for countering myrtle rust and kauri dieback,” says Ms Woods. The Biological Heritage National Science Challenge will receive the funding to undertake the research.

“The $13.75 million investment will mean that scientists can begin critically important research into kauri dieback and myrtle rust. It is vital that we get this work underway now to ensure that we combat these two pathogens and protect these taonga species,” says Research, Science and Innovation Minister, Megan Woods. “As a country, we take pride in our unique species of fauna and flora, and both of these diseases are endangering some of our most iconic and culturally significant trees. We recognise the importance of taking action to protect our biodiversity and ensure future generations can enjoy Aotearoa’s unique natural environment. “We know that addressing these challenges will require more than just three years of funding; however, this surge investment allows more time to seek additional

Fund open for agribusiness The value of New Zealand’s food and fibre sectors is set to grow as a primary sector investment fund opens for business. “Proposals for the $40 million a year Sustainable Food & Fibre Futures fund must demonstrate they will deliver benefits beyond the applicants to wider New Zealand, such as creating new highvalue jobs in rural communities,” said agriculture minister, Damien O’Connor. Anyone with a project that could make a difference to New Zealand’s food and fibre sectors could be eligible for funding through Sustainable Food & Fibre Futures. SFF Futures funds innovative projects that will create more value from the food and fibre industries. “The primary industries bring in more than $40 billion a year in export revenue and drove the latest GDP growth with agriculture, forestry and fisheries up 4.1 per cent. Our challenge and opportunity is to generate more value from these industries while sustaining the natural resources we depend upon for future generations.” Mr O’Connor says SFF Futures provides a single gateway for farmers, growers and organisations to seek investment in projects that help our economic engine move from volume to value. “The projects will grow important industries, deliver environmental and sustainability benefits, foster collaboration, build capability, create new products, services and jobs, and importantly retain the benefits in New Zealand. “This fits in with the work of the Primary Sector Council, which is taking a good look into the future of our primary sectors to help direct a strategic path forward for each sector. Together SFF Futures and the Primary Sector Council

will help our farmers and growers run their operations sustainably and profitably, driving a strong economy that helps raise the living standards of all New Zealanders.” Projects could be about developing new products or services, or ideas for creating new jobs, increasing skills and capability or encouraging better collaboration and information sharing. They can range from small, one-off initiatives requiring a small grant, to long-running, multimillion-dollar partnerships. SFF supports applied research and projects led by farmers, growers, and foresters. Some of the first 1,000 projects supported have included facing up to facial eczema, exploring fresh ways to safeguard against mastitis at dry off, dairying and peat soils and how bovine disease can be wiped out. Saving grapevines from trunk diseases, utilising laser scanning in horticulture and eradicating beetles as well as controlling crop contamination and managing the inputs in fodder beet systems. Protecting

THE UNWANTED DONKEYS

BY JILL DICKIE

Since 2006 volunteers for the Donkey and Mule Protection Trust NZ have been rescuing and rehoming donkeys giving them another chance at life, helping to ensure these equines live their days as well-cared-for members of their new families.

T

he protection trust works with six affiliated rescue and rehoming centres around New Zealand, and while each is independently owned and operated, they are financially supported when they need assistance with veterinary, microchipping or farriery costs. At the Mamaku centre in Rotorua, donkeys that stay have a job to do. The operator there, Pauline Sainsbury, works with two local intermediate schools who have a programme for children needing extra attention. “They are lovely kids who thoroughly enjoy cuddling Rosie one of my elderly

donkeys — they also help me feed out hay and give the donkeys a treat of apples and carrots.” “The kids love this as most of them have never seen a donkey up close let alone feeding and listening to the stories that each donkey has,” said Pauline. “I also take some of my rescued donkeys to kindys, schools, church functions and rest homes.” Pauline has 13 resident donkeys currently but has rehabilitated and rehomed more than 250 with supporters’ help. According to Pauline, not all have come from bad welfare situations. Sometimes their friend may have passed away, or a pair is no longer wanted if a family moves home

or grandchildren are not interested in them. “Every donkey that comes here comes with a story, some very sad but some not, and it’s a very happy ending for them.”

Andrea Thomson, located at Ikaroa in Fielding, has 16 donkeys of her own, after operating a breeding programme for several years, and competing in carriage driving competitions. She maintains regular contact with the As seen at Fieldays®

trust, operating their Facebook page and offering advice to donkey owners. In Taranaki, at Motukawa Rehoming Centre, Barbara Jones has rehomed 10 donkeys in the last 12 months, mainly jacks, who are “no longer cute wee things but downright dangerous.” “I've had jacks who've killed lambs, alpacas and terrorised dogs,” said Barbara. “People think donkeys are low maintenance, but in fact, they're just the opposite.” The biggest welfare problem the trust encounters is dealing with ungelded and often unhandled males, called jacks. As with many entire males in the animal kingdom, they do not make good pets, can be very unsociable and are entirely unsuitable around children. It is reported that some farmers paddock a donkey jack with bulls to stop them fighting, but donkeys quickly get overweight and founder on the rich grass that cattle graze. Feeding requirements are quite the opposite to this for ideal maintenance; they need mainly long, old grass or hay as roughage and love thistles, blackberry, and willow. They require similar hoof care to horses, need regular worming and as they do not have a waterproof coat, rain soaks a donkey right through. They are very susceptible to pneumonia, so need shelter and ideally a cover. Another of the main welfare problems is people buying donkeys then deciding they do not want them anymore. Many donkeys change homes every two to five years, and this can be traumatising for them as they bond very closely with each other, their

equine friends, and their human carer. In the wild in their natural environment donkeys may live 50 to 60 years, however, donkeys only live approximately 30 years in New Zealand due to their lack of appropriate care. Though they are of the equine family, donkeys have a trait quite different from horses — if in danger they cannot run fast or far and are more likely to stand and fight. Donkeys do not show fear as a horse will, and when considered to be stubborn, they are actually freezing as

they sense something is not right, and they have decided the safest thing is to wait until the danger has passed. Three rescue centres are also in the South Island, situated in Nelson, Canterbury, and Southland, and anyone wanting to report a donkey needing attention can contact the trust through their website donkey-mule-trust.org.nz. New members are welcome, as are donations and bequeaths, and the trust is currently taking orders for a fundraiser calendar.

November 2018  WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

• BY ANN VAN ENGELEN • Percy and Linda Sharp relocated from Zimbabwe to New Zealand in 2003 due to the political turmoil of their homeland and have created a new life helping improve cattle genetics both here and internationally.

P

ercy trained in South Africa as a veterinarian and was forced to leave the farm that was in his family for 100 years. “Our application to move to New Zealand was accepted, and now our whole family are here. I call them our most successful reproduction story,” says Percy. “Shortly after I left vet school the family property became an option for me, so I started dairy farming and a veterinarian practice. My colleague specialised in embryo transfer work and trained me so I could work on my own cows and the interest developed.” ET helps get progeny from exceptional females — whereas artificial insemination is getting progeny from superior males. “We collect the embryos directly from

quality cows and implant them into recipient cows so they can produce excellent calves. The older way is injecting cows with fertility drugs to release eggs and a week later collect the embryos.” Another system is in vitro fertilisation where unfertilised eggs are collected and fertilised with semen in the laboratory and are inserted into a surrogate cow or frozen to be used in the future. “Previously you could only work on a non-pregnant animal. Now we collect eggs directly from ovaries and don't have to go into the uterus, and if she is early in calf the ovary is still accessible,” says Percy. “The main drawback is we can’t make an embryo in a laboratory as robust as a cow can, so the success rates are not as high no matter how hard we try,

The Sharp family are now all in New Zealand and Percy says they are the most successful breeding project he has been involved in

but we can now collect eggs every four days instead of six-weekly for recovery time. There is a lot of specialised work involved and aim for 100 per cent success, but on an average, we usually get 50 per cent pregnancy rates. “Another important use of ET is moving genetics internationally with ease. The embryo is put through a washing process and rendered diseasefree and is microscopic meaning less cost than relocating a live animal.” Linda is responsible for the microscope and laboratory work. “We at Embryo Transfer Services Ltd are one of the two companies in New Zealand that offer the IVF and Moet procedures operating throughout the North Island. “Our biggest success was with a breed of cattle from Kenya that farmers wanted to establish in Zimbabwe. Due to foot and mouth disease, we couldn’t relocate animals, so we collected 500 embryos and produced 250 calves establishing the breed in Zimbabwe.” Embryos of another indigenous breed were transferred from Zimbabwe to establish the stock in America. “We still visit Zimbabwe, and our project at present is to establish KiwiCross cattle there. The dairy farming industry has been decimated by the political problems, but we keep hoping things will get better and believe New Zealand’s Friesian/Jersey cattle are ideal for the conditions. “We love it here and are settled. Most of the work we do is for people with registered pedigree cattle that go to agricultural shows wanting to get a few more calves out of their prize animals.

Save Lives

Recipient jersey cross cows with full-blood Wagyu calves using imported embryos from Australia

We also help commercial farmers improve their herds.” The desired result of ET is to produce more calves from a superior mother. “As an example, I worked on a young cow in America, and before she produced her own calf physically, she created 100 calves because we were able to use her eggs. “The most difficult part is finding the right fertile cow that is on the same cycle to transfer the offspring into. It is frustrating when it doesn’t work, especially when there is no logical reason to explain why, but the success stories are fantastic. It is a numbers game, so you are better to work on 10 cows for a higher positive result than one cow and fail.”

Percy and Linda own a 12 acre block and four years ago decided to breed Wagyu cattle with imported embryos from Australia and now have nine Wagyu from those embryos. “It is a way to help cash flow, and if you have a small block, you can do this comfortably by planning right. We also holistically manage, which is beyond organic — working with nature instead of against it. We now grow enough grass with major financial savings, and the meat is much better quality without chemical residues from fertiliser, pest and herbicides, and that makes our ET work even more positive.”

A COUNTRY BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Shirley Marsh grows a vast variety of plants in her nursery at Pukekawa including fruit trees, native plants and bromeliads and has fond memories of farming emus with her husband, Malcolm.

“M

alcolm was in charge of the emus, and I took care of the nursery. He died two and a half years ago so now I just have the nursery — because emus were quite difficult to make an income from, but I do miss the birds running around the property,” says Shirley. “We had pairs for other people and used to incubate the eggs. Every day the eggs were weighed to make sure they were growing. We had a double bunk system with two shelves, and lights above them to keep them cosy. When they hatched and were big enough — they would go into a special room to exercise and play. “They are funny characters and get up to all sorts of mischief. Malcolm

would work in the paddock and collect the eggs or fix the fences and the emus would watch and follow him. They would pick up his tools and run away with them and play games.” Shirley says the return they received from the birds didn’t sustain the business and Malcolm also worked at the airport doing runway maintenance. “It is ok if you had livestock, but as soon as you had the birds for meat — you lost profit. “When you sold them to the abattoir, you were charged for processing and also had to go and defeather them at slaughter and do some of the work plus sell your own meat. I don't know any farmer that had to do that. We would approach restaurants but they only

wanted the best cuts — and we were left with the rest. “Emu are much better to work with than ostriches. When you build an ostrich farm, the fencing has to be high, and you need planned escape routes because they can attack and kill you.” Shirley says ostriches have one male to a group of females and are territorial — whereas emus have one lifelong partner and are social. “They live up to 45 years and produce 30 eggs per season. The meat is low cholesterol and high in iron and protein. It compares to beef in colour, taste and texture. An average hide produces about nine to 10 square feet of leather with a distinctive quill pattern and is very soft and pliable. The feathers are used in the fashion industry.” A company called Moanui develops emu oil for products including skin care and therapeutic remedies. “Moanui would buy oil the off us. It has been used for centuries by the Australian Aborigines as a traditional treatment for arthritis, muscle and joint pain and a variety of skin conditions as an anti-inflammatory commonly used for eczema, dermatitis and burns,” says Shirley. “I use it for scratches and rashes if I get spiked from bromeliads and my son uses it on his psoriasis.” Shirley worked in the nursery industry for 25 years prior to establishing her own and grows whatever she can, often dividing plants to establish new ones. “I was working for Ann and Eion Scarrow the gardening guru. I purchased their stock after Eion died — when Ann decided to sell, I wanted her to get a fair price.

Emu can live up to 45 years, and each female can produce some 30 eggs a season

“It was a privilege to work alongside them both, she had very beautiful gardens and Eion wrote the books, and was always interested in what we were up to as we propagated plants. “I grow and supply natives, shrubs, ornamental trees, grasses, bromeliads, seedlings and much more. We created a garden setting here so people can make an informed decision by seeing

mature plants. If you aren’t a gardener, it certainly helps. “Dividing what you have when possible is an easy way to create new plants. I love pulling a plant to bits and repotting it, and I enjoy helping the elderly, so they don’t need to spend a lot of money to get beautiful gardens. “I believe whatever plants you put in you have to enjoy. Reminder to check Takata airbags Consumer Affairs minister Hon Kris Faafoi is urging New Zealanders to check if their vehicle has Takata Alpha-type airbags, which are being recalled. The compulsory recall came into effect in April this year and data to the end of October shows there are still around 35,000 affected vehicles in New Zealand that are yet to be repaired, although almost 60 per cent have been repaired. “We know many will be planning their summer trips now. In New Zealand, we have higher crash rates than we have seen before so it’s more important than ever that all vehicles have safe airbags. “Consumers can check whether their vehicle has been affected by visiting rightcar.govt.nz and keying in their registration number. RightCar tells consumers if their vehicle has an Alphatype airbag that needs replacing and exactly what to do if that is the case. “If a vehicle is affected, consumers will get their Alpha airbags replaced at no cost, no matter if the vehicle was purchased privately, through a dealer, new or second-hand. “I urge anyone who has received a letter from their car’s distributor to act on it immediately and get their airbags replaced. “Overseas there have been 23 known fatal cases of airbags exploding

Kris Faafoi, Consumer Affairs minister

and sending fragments into the vehicle. While the risk of that happening in New Zealand is low due to less humidity in the air, which the airbags are more susceptible to, we need consumers to get on board to bring risk levels down and keep our people safe. “I’d also like to acknowledge the ongoing work of the motor vehicle industry who remain committed to ensuring all Alpha airbags are replaced by December 2019 and whilst I’m pleased with progress to date, we can’t afford to become complacent.”

When it’s mission critical, CorrosionX Motorhome owners, boaties, barge owners, wastewater works, farmers and trawler captains — mix water with metal — own a vehicle or a boat on the beautiful islands of Aotearoa, and you own corrosion issues, too.

It sounded expensive when the COF inspector, OSH or the class surveyor told you “to do something about the rust”. With a CorrosionX applicator close by, it’s not that bad any longer. CorrosionX has protected Defence Force equipment and commercial aircraft worldwide for more than 20 years. Fogged into chassis, electrics and electronics, voids and hollows it is the perfect product to mothball and rustproof machinery — even when they are already wet or rusty. Applied without tedious prep work, CorrosionX penetrates and lubricates fast underneath existing rust, electrolysis and oxidisation. CorrosionX never dries and never stops looking for rust — Polar Bonding that’s called. A bit like magnetism. CorrosionX actually bonds to the metal — way more action than

your traditional DIY-grade rust stopper could ever dream to offer. Long story short: CorrosionX stops rust, oxidisation and electrolysis the very moment it is applied. The application is a matter of a few hours. Forget days of dismantling, sandblasting, priming, painting, reassembling and then trying to get the sand out again for months to come. CorrosionX is non-flammable, lubrication value three times better than engine oil and totally safe on rubber, neoprene, paint and plastics. Call your authorised applicator for an obligation free quote. Solid workmanship and industry grade product. CorrosionX is aviation approved and military certified, NZ MPI class C11, Dulux ASTM tested. All certs, videos, tests and specs can be viewed at corrosionx.org.

Chondroitin: Forgotten hero If you use a joint supplement for osteoarthritis, then stop reading and get the bottle and check the amount of chondroitin sulphate (CS) in the daily dose. Most older-style formulas will have up to 20% CS in the formula typically about 200mg in a daily dose. Chondroitin is a structural component of cartilage adding strength and resistance to compression. The study that changed it all for me was published in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases (Wildi et al, 2011) the study title is: Chondroitin sulphate reduces both cartilage volume loss and bone marrow lesions in knee osteoarthritis patients starting as early as six months after initiation of therapy: a randomised, doubleblind, placebo-controlled pilot study using MRI. Eighty people with similar grades of knee OA were chosen. Half the participants were given 800mg of CS as 400mg twice daily for six months. The other group was given a placebo. The two groups were then compared after six months. The group using CS had much less cartilage loss. The next phase then gave all the participants 800mg of CS for another six months. The same results occurred. Those that had been on the placebo showed a reduction in cartilage loss

while the group that had continued with CS now for 12 months continued with much less cartilage loss. As a consequence, I reformulated my joint support formula and lifted CS to the levels used in the study. I also added a potent anti-inflammatory 95% curcumin (from turmeric) extract. Even joints that show signs of degeneration can improve. As an example one man I have been helping noticed significant improvements in mobility and comfort after only a few months and is now even able to ski again. Pets dislike being left behind whilst their ‘family’ go on adventures but at times there is no option, particularly if there is no ‘pet-friendly’ accommodation available. Most areas have boarding kennels for cats and dogs, and they take care

of all your pets’ needs. Another option is getting a house and pet sitter to come into your home and check on your animals, or stay on-site and keep your animal and feathered friends company. It also means your property is not left empty. If this is the solution for you, make sure you have enough food supplies and a list of meal times and sizes, the name of your veterinarian and an emergency contact number for yourself, a friend or family member who is available if needed. If your pet is on medications, ensure you have sufficient supply and leave clear instructions on administering them. Make sure the carer knows to leave fresh water out daily and explain routines, special beds or treats so your pet has things as normal as possible — whether they are a cat, dog, rabbit or alpaca. When taking your pet with you plan ahead and check they are welcome and remember to enquire about restrictions at campsites, parks and beaches. The safest way for a dog or cat to travel is in a pet crate that has been securely anchored or a properly fitted harness

that is securely attached to the vehicle as directed by the manufacturer. Partially covering the crate can help relax the animal and they should be kept in the back seat to prevent injury if an airbag deploys. Animals that get motion sickness or anxious can be given medications to help relax. Stop frequently during longer trips to allow

your pet to exercise and go to the toilet and never leave an animal locked inside a car as the temperatures rise to high levels and can lead to death. Remember, even animals can enjoy time away with their loved ones, exploring the countryside and those left at home need quality of care as they await your return.

Going on holiday

IT’S NOT A TARGET

As people lead increasingly hectic lives the Christmas holiday season is often the best time we get to have a much-deserved and looked-forward-to break. If you own a farm or lifestyle block, this means having a plan for the care of your animals, gardens and property whilst you are away. It is best to have someone stay at your property, so they are on hand with your livestock if something goes wrong. To help them ensure you are stocked up on chicken food, horses hay and sheep pellets if need be and have a written plan for your animal care. Even housesitters can need backup if a sheep starts coughing or a goat eats grandma’s roses, so introduce them personally to your neighbours and give them phone numbers of people you trust should help be needed as well as your local veterinarian and supply store. Sometimes it is just as easy to hire the neighbour’s teenager to feed the cats and chickens if they are home. The water system is the most important, especially in summer. Even the chickens and pigs need to have access to fresh water so make sure all your water supply outlets are in working order before leaving your valuable livestock. The same goes for locks and external latches on boundary gates — make sure your cattle can’t ‘play’ with

the latch and accidentally open the gates, particularly onto the main road as the owner of livestock is liable and road safety is a must for all concerned. An electronic system to water your veggie garden or nursery while you are away is often convenient and remember if you have raised beds they dry out faster than the ground and one hot week can destroy your hard work and veggie crop. Cheaper watering options are tap timers that screw onto your hose programmed for a good soak early

every second morning or evening. It will remove one job from the list of chores, giving your carer more time to cover other important aspects of your block. Whilst you are away, the less your carer needs to worry about things the better experience they will have, and the more planning you have done at the beginning means, the more relaxed you and your loved one will be on the muchdeserved holiday.

Considering a pool With summer on its way, the idea for many families is to add a swimming pool to their property as a convenient way to have fun, cool off, entertain friends and hang out. Swimming pools are a good way to get that much-needed exercise after a hard day’s work and they also add a new dimension aesthetically to a garden or yard. No matter what type of pool you are considering it is important to know that there are specific rules covering swimming pool creation and installation including excavation of the land, structure of the pool and the product that is used to create it. Regardless if it is for swimming, paddling or spa pools, these rules refer to anything that can be defined as a swimming pool. If the pool has the capability of holding water with a depth greater than

400mm (16 inches) then it is required to be fenced in accordance with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act — this includes blow up and temporary pools. The Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 exists to help protect children from the danger of drowning. It does this by requiring owners to fence their pools, and the act information covers doors and walls to buildings adjoining the pool, gates, fence height requirements, ground clearance and materials used. All pools that are installed must comply with the act. All pool fencing requires a building consent, including that around spa pools, and some pools

boundary fences may form part of the pool fence provided they comply and meet the requirements of the act. State of the art dental care

Tyre Checks & Repairs New and Used Tyres Wheel Alignments

Villa Dental’s story starts with Dr Henk Eksteen, who grew up on a farm on the wide plains of Africa. After losing 10 teeth to bad dentistry as a young man, he discovered as a dental student that you needn’t ever lose one if they’re looked after properly. Making New Zealand his home in 1994, what he discovered was very different to what he had grown up with. Much to his surprise, Kiwis, both young and old, were afraid of the dentist! Henk and wife Annette set about bringing heart and trust back to dentistry. “I was so curious about why people didn’t like being at the dentist. We wanted to change that. We got to know the people, asked them their stories.” That was when they found out that fear was the big motivator not to see the dentist. Fear of treatment because of what happened to children in the state system in years gone by, as well as a resistance to the cost of dental treatment in New Zealand. With that understanding in mind, they set about changing these unfortunate perceptions. “The field of dentistry is constantly evolving, and we’re evolving with it. We aim to keep on top of most of the latest developments, so the needs of our patients are met. We use state of the

art dental equipment and innovative technology, from painless injections, digital X-Rays and 3D Cone Beam Scans to life-changing cosmetic dentistry. With our Service Menu, we take waiting room comfort seriously. From lavender hand massages and hot towels to jewellery cleaning, prepare to be pampered during your visit. We believe that oral health is vital because it affects one’s health as a whole; therefore quality dental treatment should be available and affordable for everyone. Our pricing, including our low-interest payment plan, makes quality care accessible to all. Our team includes internationally renowned dentists who are passionate about education and growth in the field and we’re available to help on the same day you call. whether you are on a farm, a small block or have a few sheep in your backyard. The Animal Welfare Act establishes a duty of care for animals, and you must meet their physical, health, and behavioural needs, and must alleviate pain or distress. The act defines ‘physical, health, and behavioural needs’ as proper and sufficient food and water. Simple changes to reduce water consumption include using hoses and watering cans to allow individual plants to be watered as a hose running at full volume uses 2,000 litres of water an hour. Only water in the cool of the early morning or evening; plants take up moisture through their feeder roots and low, slow watering is the best way to get it there. Moveable sprinklers are the least effective for saving water. If you soak your garden once every few days, this encourages deeper roots to seek out moisture. For a healthy summer lawn leaving 25

Leave clippings as mulch, to help conserve soil moisture and put nutrients back into the soil. Around the house cut back on showers as each minute uses approximately 14 litres of water. Even a slow dripping tap can use 10 litres of water a day, and a leaking toilet can waste thousands of litres in a year. AgrowQuip — for great pasture returns We all know that the best quality haylage starts with great grass, but without a careful mowing process, great grass guarantees nothing. For the best possible results, you need ground-hugging machines with low disintegration losses coupled with a precise operation that isn’t time-consuming for the operator. The Pottinger commercial grass range meets all of the above. The Novacat disc mower range provides perfect 3D ground-hugging to make sure you don’t miss a spot. The low-slung cantilever system along with the ball-joint mounted guide arms

allow the cutter bar to move freely over bumps and ridges and provide excellent adaptation to ground contours. Plus with the quick change blade system that comes as standard on all Pottinger mowers, you can maintain a sharp process all season long.

arah has loved horses her entire life. At the age of 10, she received her first horse as a Christmas gift. Her grandfather, a former top jumps jockey, gave her a lot of support and encouragement. “My grandad sent me to help out at a stable for Stuart Manning, who was a good friend of his,” she said. “So I learnt to ride track work on the beach, groomed horses at the races, and all the rest of the hard work that went with it.” Work for Central Districts racehorse trainer, Kevin Gray, and at Lisa Latta’s racing stables in Christchurch followed. When Sarah moved back to the Waikato, she took on employment at a breaking-in and pretraining establishment in Matamata. She also worked on a stud farm, preparing yearlings for the sales.

Sarah continues preparing yearlings for sales, as well as running her own small stud farm, Willow Creek Farm. The stud farm was established two years ago in Morrinsville, but recently relocated to the Bay of Plenty. Joy’s long and varied involvement with horses dates back to 1960. Not only did this include pleasure riding, showing horses and racing, but Joy also founded and established the national registered horse welfare charity, Horsewatch NZ (HWNZ). When Joy’s health deteriorated, due to a previous blood disease progressing to a rare form of blood cancer, she was forced to close HWNZ. “I still had the desire to continue contributing in a constructive way to a good cause,” she said. As a search began for a suitable stallion to send her mare, Nonna

Quattro, to be bred with, an idea to help a charity also developed. “Due to Joy’s own personal circumstances, she wanted to find someone who would be willing to take Nonna on when her condition worsened,” said Sarah. “I then came up with an idea to donate any proceeds from the sale of the resulting foal to charity. “So the hunt began to find something small and personal that could benefit from a donation.” The pair also wanted to be able to follow the charity closely and help young children immediately, rather than trying to help fund research. When Sarah came across child cancer charity, Gabby’s Starlit Hope, she sent through the Facebook link to Joy. “Joy immediately knew that this was the charity we wanted to help and see smiles light up on the faces of kids, who are in situations that make life harder than it should be.” Joy said with her own personal link with cancer, Gabby’s Starlit Hope seemed the perfect choice. Starlit Hope was created by the late Gabby Devine in February 2013. A diagnosis of Ewing’s Sarcoma (a rare type of bone cancer) in February 2012, meant Gabby had a year of intensive chemotherapy, radiation and major surgery to remove the remaining tumour. During this time, she spent many months at Starship and Taranaki Base Hospitals. When Gabby completed her cancer treatment, she wanted to help oncology children in their cancer journey.

21

The late Gabby Devine created Gabby’s Starlit Hope with random acts of kindness for oncology children, parents and occasionally oncology staff

She established Starlit Hope with the aim of doing random acts of kindness for oncology children, parents and occasionally oncology staff. A major part of this was providing oncology children in hospital with boredom boxes containing seven presents — one for the child to open each day for a week. Gabby passed away in 2015 at the age of 13. Joy’s mare, a six-year-old Thoroughbred, was initially being trained and prepared for life as a show hack. Unfortunately due to a serious accident, Nonna is no longer able to be ridden. “She has also had her share of setbacks, but is now 100% and ready to embark on her new endeavours,” said Joy.

“The decision to join with Sarah Thompson of Willow Creek Farm, and her lovely palomino stallion, He’s All In A Twist, provides Nonna with an alternative productive purpose in life.” Joy said Nonna will now help contribute to the young cancer-affected children of New Zealand, as they undergo invasive treatment in hospital. The rising four-year-old palomino paint Quarter Horse/Stationbred cross stallion, He’s All In A Twist, stands at 15hh and was bred for his quality and trainable temperament. “Due to these passed-down traits from his sire and dam, coupled with his wonderful personality, I decided to stand him for stud duties,” said Sarah. “So far this is paying off, with his progeny

possessing the exact same traits.” Sarah and Joy aim for a special annual breeding between these two horses with 100% of the proceeds from the sale of each foal donated to Gabby’s Starlit Hope. The pair are yet to decide whether this will be via tender or a set price. “Nonna Quattro has had two previous beautiful foals and we expect the pairing with He’s All In A Twist will produce equally as stunning foals,” said Sarah. “We hope the public will follow both the resulting progeny and the charity as it is such a deserving cause.” The horses’ progress can be followed at facebook.com/willow.creek.horse. transport/ and facebook.com/NonnasLegacy-1721742487882478/

COMMITTED TO FORESTRY BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

The Horne family have been in the logging business since 1964 and are passionate about their commitment to excellence in industry training as they encourage workers into forestry as a career.

“E

veryone who works for us has to be certified for all the jobs they do, this is the non-negotiable bottom line for our company,” says operations manager, Amanda Horne. Amanda comes from a nursing background and now runs the family business alongside her husband, Bernard. “Bernard is the third generation of his family to run the business, and we look set to continue into the future, with our 21-year-old son Matt already a key member of the team, and our daughter Louise helps me part-time. Bernard and Matt have logging in the blood. Logging is all Matt has ever wanted to do — from spending time in the forest with his grandfather as

a toddler, he is now halfway through a two-year level six diploma in forest management at Toi Ohomai, formerly Waiariki Institute of Technology, Rotorua. “Matt has been working in the forest since leaving school and plans to gradually move into a management role at Horne Logging. He is already bringing new management skills into the business,” says Bernard. “We are both totally comfortable in the heart of a harvesting landscape. My biggest satisfaction comes from getting the job done and making sure the crews are happy and safe. “We operate two logging crews with approximately 17 staff, most of who live around Masterton and Carterton. At present, the whole team is working in Erindale Forest, which

is part of Wairarapa Forest Estate.” The company’s commitment to training has led to multiple awards, including being named ‘Training Contractor of the Year’ for the Southern North Island in 2017 and 2018. “One of our team members Dan Kyle was also awarded Trainee of the Year in 2018, and we recently achieved ‘certified contractor’ status. This confirms high standards of environmental management and health and safety in all of our operations,” says Amanda. “I call our crew members ‘the lads’, and they are really an extension of our family. We do have the good ones and the naughty ones of course, but we aim to be as supportive as possible to all our staff.” This attitude runs to early finishes on every second Friday so staff can return to town to tend to any personal matters they may have. The company also provide a staff lunch and health and safety meeting at least once a month at their base in Masterton. “Our philosophy is basically to treat people the way we would like to be treated ourselves,” says Amanda. “One of my underlying values is that having an education leads to more choices. We want to encourage people to grow in their jobs. All of our guys are trained to be multiskilled and can take on a number of jobs in the forest, but we also encourage them to refresh their training and upskill.” Training is ongoing, and programmes are organised with the help of Russell Riley, the regional Competenz forestry

Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

Bernard and Matt Horne are the third and fourth generation of loggers in the family manager, and NZQA assessor John Reid. “Dan Kyle has now also qualified as an assessor, so comes in very useful as part of our training team. In addition, we now employ one of our crew members Justin Carswell in a full-time health and safety role,” says Amanda. “It does annoy me that forestry workers lack recognition for their high skill levels. People can be quite dismissive of forestry as a career, but there are lots of opportunities and all of them involve different skills.” Amanda says that all the effort put into staff management and training doesn’t mean that Horne Logging is immune from the challenges of finding and retaining good staff. “It is one of our biggest day-today headaches, staff shortages are widespread throughout the forest

industry,” says Bernard. We would really love to see more women in the industry, including out in the forest, there are plenty of jobs women can do. They see things with a different set of eyes and having even one woman in a crew could make a huge difference to crew culture. We think the industry needs a bit of a shake-up, and to become more flexible in its approach to employing women.” The family have a long list of the blocks to be logged over the next few years in the eastern Wairarapa. “There will be no shortage of work for Horne Logging, and as a family our goal is to continue our commitment to training excellence wherever we are working.”

LIVESTOCK ADVERTORIAL

Red Snap’r has done it again Electric fence monitoring has now been around for just beyond two years since we introduced the Red Trout IP Energiser to the farming community at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek in 2016. We have three units available, eight, 12 and 16 output Joules. The energiser will let you know via your mobile phone in real time the exact voltage on the fence. If there is a drop in power below the minimum voltage you have programmed, you will be advised immediately with a message to your phone. In other words, there are no additional gadgets required, just the IP Energiser and a mobile phone. To make matters even more interesting for you, we do not charge for this extra convenience. The three IP energisers can be powered both by mains or battery, and they are offered at around 30% less than similar energisers on the market which do not have this monitoring facility. Visit our website redsnapsr.co.nz or give us a call.

Coarse wool breakthrough Years of research to find new uses for coarse wool has resulted in the successful deconstruction of wool fibre to create completely new materials set to revitalise the wool industry. Researchers at Lincoln Agritech Ltd have successfully broken down coarse wool, which comprises of around threequarters of the New Zealand wool clip, into its cellular components, creating new materials that are not wool, but contain wool attributes. The work is part of a $21 million, seven-year research programme into new uses for coarse wool co-funded by the Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand and the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment. The work began in 2016 via a WRONZ wholly-owned subsidiary, Wool Industry Research Ltd, led by Dr Garth Carnaby and WRONZ has patented a number of deconstruction methods. “We are delighted that our efforts to find new uses for coarse wool, on behalf of our members, has made significant progress,” said WRONZ chairman, Derrick Milton. “Successfully deconstructing coarse wool to create new materials is a major breakthrough that has the potential to add huge value to the wool industry. Although scale-up and commercialisation is still some way off, WRONZ will work with its membership to maximise value for NZ wool growers and for New Zealand as a whole.”

Currently, coarse wool has limited uses and is mainly used to create wool carpets, a market that is in significant decline due to the growing popularity of synthetic alternatives. That has resulted in lower prices for coarse wool, currently around $3.35 a kilo, and a reduction in sheep farming. Dr Carnaby introduced the new materials to wool industry members at the WRONZ AGM in late October. The materials consist of tiny particles, much smaller than coarse wool and typically in the 5–10 micron range. The smaller ingredients massively open up potential uses for the wool in a wide range of new industries and value chains. WRONZ members cover all aspects of the industry from wool production, wool exporting to scouring and processing into products. Lead researcher Dr Rob Kelly from Lincoln Agritech described some of the properties of the new materials and is exploring potential uses for the new fibre with WRONZ member companies with expertise in cosmetics, filters and luxury clothing.

WHEELS

Return of the king by Andy Bryenton

Prior to 2011, the image in most people’s minds of a best-selling Ford ute was one in line with our automotive history down under — you’d likely picture a V8 powered, low-slung muscle machine like those produced by tuning house FPV. All that changed when 2011’s Ford Ranger came on the scene. In retrospect, it was a turning point for the brand in New Zealand — a milestone pointing to an era of dominance. Now it’s come time to follow-up the ongoing legacy of what has become not just our nation’s favourite utility vehicle, but our top vehicle overall for three years running. Ford is well aware that the only way to go onwards is to go upwards, and so their 2019 Ranger debuts with a smooth new transmission, a new power options and a new, revised look to deliver more presence on the road. New under the hood is the option of a two-litre, twin-turbocharged common rail diesel engine, developing a phenomenal 500Nm of torque for heavy hauling duties and to power the Ranger through rough terrain. With more than 210 horsepower, this compact but mighty engine compares favourably to the established and reliable Duratorq 3.2 litre diesel which remains an option in the new lineup. With the two-litre twin turbo mated to a seriously smooth ten-speed automatic transmission, the ample power on tap delivers a fresh helping of the car-like ride and road manners which made the original Ranger a hit. Even with

the familiar Duratorq, the ride seems lighter, more nimble and more accomplished. Other additions are purely futuristic — tech such as road sign recognition, which displays appropriate road signage in the ute’s display. You’ll also be able to choose automatic parking assist, which is pure magic when witnessed operating on a vehicle of this size. As is to be expected, much of Ford’s wizardry works behind the scenes in the name of safety and comfort, but their new Sync 3 infotainment system is front and centre in a well-appointed cab, putting everything at your fingertips. While Ford has not rewritten the rulebook on the way the Ranger looks for 2019, it’s a clear update on the style front, with a slightly more aggressive look to complement those extra abilities. Here in the heartland

Call for certified farm nutrient advisers Waikato Regional Council has opened for applications from rural professionals wanting to be certified farm nutrient advisers. “An online application form has been built to make it easy for professionals to register and for certification to be approved by council staff,” said farming services plan implementation team leader, Sonia Baker. Terms of Agreement for the certification of CFNAs set the criteria and manner in which professionals must conduct themselves before becoming certified. Applicants must demonstrate that they are registered as a Certified Farm Nutrient Adviser by the Nutrient Management Adviser Certification Programme and agree to be bound by the Terms of Agreement. “We have set these standards so landowners can have confidence in the advice they are being provided with when developing their nitrogen reference points,” said Ms Baker. “Most properties over 20 hectares will need to provide a nitrogen reference point to the council within the submission window of May 1 to November 30, 2020. One of the tools CFNAs will be required to use is Overseer.” A document is available to guide CFNAs in the use of Overseer in the preparation of nitrogen reference points. It is an important next step as the council works to implement

Flipping the game

When engineering innovator John Regier sat down to change the way people mow their lawns, he began with the idea of a combine harvester, rendered small. Rather than scaling up a push mower — and in those days we really do mean the old reel-bladed iron monster — he combined elements of farm machinery with the turf care devices deployed on American football fields. Of course, off the football field, you’ll find obstacles like bird baths, garden beds, pathways and shrubs. That means the ability to turn sharply and manoeuvre in tight spots was key to his mower’s success. And success was what awaited the first Hustler mower, spawning generations of big yellow machines for decades to come. Now those first principles have been further defined with the advent of the latest offering from Hustler Mowers — the Raptor Flip-Up. With zero-turn agility, this mower follows closely in the template laid down by John Regier all those years back. You can be impressed by the advancements made all round, from the fingertip sensitivity of the controls

through to the power under the hood. That comes from a Kawasaki 23 horsepower overhead cam v-twin motor, air cooled and positioned low in the frame for stability. Of course, it’s the excellent torque from this unit which drivers the triple blades beneath the Hustler Raptor’s 54 inches wide cutting deck, armed with guide wheels to help it float over the turf. Moreover, the real party piece of his mower is one that will save both time — and aches and pains! This Raptor, as its name suggests, flips up to allow access to the blades beneath. The entire front of the mower hinges up and away for both ease of maintenance and cleaning. No more ramps, no more lifts, no more trying to

get underneath the machine to ensure a good clean, or to lubricate and rustproof those blades. As an added bonus, the ‘flipped’ mode is much easier to store in a

smaller space, like a folding bicycle or picnic table. For serious lawns, Hustler has been setting a high benchmark for years. Now they’ve flipped zero-turn design on its head!
