SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Rural women play role in lowering quad accidents

Quad bike accidents — the biggest cause of on-farm injuries and deaths in New Zealand — are not solely a male domain. By Annette Lambly-Robinson

Last year two women were killed in farming quad bike accidents. A 62 year old woman was killed on her property in Kaikohe, while a young farm worker was killed near Westport. Over the past eight years seven women have lost their lives in quad accidents on farms and every year, on average, five farmers are killed and 850 are injured. The accidents incur an ACC bill of around $7 million a year, and leave a legacy of loss, debilitation and pain. of Labour to increase the quad skills levels of dairy farming women. This month (November) the organisation is using its popular Dairy Days as a way to get the message out about safer riding. “More women than ever are involved in the dairy industry, often as heavily as their male counterparts and the impact that death and injury has on rural families and businesses is simply too great to ignore,” says Dairy Women’s Network chief executive Sarah Speight. Women attending any of the Dairy Days held nationwide November 8 — 30 will have the opportunity to improve quad riding knowledge. “They will leave with more knowledge on the key principles of quad bike operation, along with information on quad regulations to pass on to staff back at the farm,” said Ms Speight. “The impact of a death or injury on a farm from a quad bike is personal, social and economic. Anything that helps reduce these effects has to be good for the farm, and for the industry,” she said. Ag ITO advisor Graeme Couper is one of the 10 instructors who will be providing hands-on tips to improve quad bike riding skills. He believes women are often more open to improving their skill set, and play a vital role in passing those skills on to other staff. “They may not be riding as frequently, (as the men) but when they do, they may be in challenging situations, such as towing calf milk — which can challenge your skills and the quad’s ability. “We also hope to highlight the need

for good, ongoing quad maintenance programmes,” he said. The Department of Labour is one year into an initiative aimed at reducing the level of accidents on quad bikes, and the campaign comes with four key messages — always wear a helmet, keep children off quads, train staff correctly and use the right machine for the job. It aims to reduce quad bike accidents by 30% by 2013. Department head of harm reduction Francois Barton said working with the Dairy Women’s Network reflected the valuable role women can play in improving quad bike safety on their own farms. “We know they are often the influencers on the farm and we believe they can help reduce death and injury by the way they ride quad bikes,” he said. The department intends to have some of the inspectors from its team present at the Dairy Days, providing information on the quad bike safety campaign and the seasonal farm inspection currently underway. Inspectors will be explaining the outcomes of these visits, which can include a range of enforcement options from written warnings, improvement notices and prosecution. Dairy Days will be held in Taranaki on November 15 at Coopers Farm, 24 Oru Rd, Stratford 10am-2pm. Pre registration is vital. A cancer victim’s generous bequest will benefit many children and teens in the Waikato and Coromandel districts. When Chica Gilmer died in August 2009 after a short battle with cancer she left a generous $10,000 bequest to Rural Women New Zealand to be used as the organisation saw fit. Chica had been a long time member of the Rukuhia branch of RWNZ and the rural community and children were the passions in Chica’s life. When RWNZ learned Rainbow Place — an arm of Hospice Waikato which supports children and young people coping with serious illness was struggling to service the large region due to a shortage of transport, they decided a new vehicle would be the perfect way to use the bequest. An additional vehicle will make it easier for Rainbow Place’s three therapists and two nurses to meet the

growing demand for counselling and children’s nursing services. The lack of transport had lead to long waits for families, particularly in rural areas.

“I can’t tell you what it’s going to mean to us. Our case load has increased substantially as people have got to know about Rainbow Place,’’ said Ms Parsons. “We are so grateful — it (the car) enables us to carry on doing work with children and families going through ‘tough stuff’.”

Rainbow Place therapists and nurses travel around 2,500 kilometres a month, mainly to families in remote areas, or those unable to travel to Hamilton.

With gas supplies returning to normal last week Waikato farmers have been praised for their efforts in limiting the amount of milk seeping into the region’s waterways while the Maui gas pipeline was out of action. Waikato regional council’s compliance and education manager Rob Dragten confirmed the council received only four reports of milk entering waterways. Given the region have more than 4000 dairy farmers to have only four incidents was a tremendous effort by all concerned. With Fonterra’s milk processing capacity drastically reduced by the Maui gas week-long outage which began on October 24, farmers in the northern half of the North Island initially had to dump 35 million litres of milk a day. Dumped milk getting into waterways is extremely toxic, stripping oxygen from the water and killing aquatic life.

Most of the produce finds its way to restaurants, speciality shops and supermarkets, but the de Jongs also enjoy their Sunday morning trips to the Hamilton Farmers Market. The family-like atmosphere makes it a great place to catch up with other growers and regular customers. It is also a very good place to test new produce lines. In Holland Frans had worked for 27 years in an agricultural laboratory and the last seven years in his own laboratory that he and a colleague had established. He is proud of its success. However having grown up on a dairy farm, his love of farming was strong, so the desire for a more ‘hands on’ farming lifestyle always beckoned. Tineke has a background in floristry and is also a keen gardener, making owning a lifestyle block an ideology they both shared. It was these backgrounds, and the love of the land, that gave them the drive to embrace and develop biological farming practices on their property. Over the years, the couple has made significant changes to the property, including dedicating themselves to sustainable and biological growing methods. The de Jongs’ soil and leaf test in the orchard every year, and nutrient water test in the greenhouse once a month to ensure they have a good nutrient balance for growing. “Our philosophy is simple — a healthy plant stays healthy and productive if it is looked after well and fed all the nutrients and micro elements nature provides naturally through soil biology,” says Frans. The 1,500-square metre greenhouse is a high tech operation with three computers working together to control, temperature, humidity, nutrient concentration and irrigation sequence. Daily checks of the technical features of the greenhouse are performed to obtain optimal growth and fruit development. The irrigation is a total recycle system, so not one drop of fertiliser and water is wasted nor will the greenhouse pollute any nutrients in the soil and aquifers. They employ three people almost year round to work in the glasshouse, and an additional 15 people help with the feijoa harvest, grading and packing. When the greenhouse plants have finished production they are removed and used to compost the feijoas. The spray free feijoas are currently in flower. Interestingly the flowers are pollinated by birds, rather than bees. In December and January the fruit starts to develop with harvesting starting around April and continuing through until mid June. The couple regularly welcome national and international tours on their orchard — it’s a great chance to spread the success story of sustainable biological growing to the world. For those visiting the area and looking for somewhere different to stay check out the self-contained accommodation at the orchard. There is no doubt the de Jongs are thrilled with their lifestyle and the success they are having with their farming practices — and of course they are still revelling in the opportunity to enjoy those ‘intriguing feijoas’.

In 2008, when Rotorua farmer Maria-Fe Rohrlach (22) was expecting her first baby she decided she wanted a baby sling to carry her soon-to-arrive baby.

he wanted a sling because she wanted to keep active and a sling provided her a lightweight way of keeping her baby close while keeping her hands free. Slings were also adaptable to suit the age and weight of the child. Finding what she wanted however proved to be a lot more difficult than anticipated — she scoured the country to try and buy a baby sling. “I couldn’t find anything that was practical and stylish,” said Maria-Fe. Necessity has always been the mother of invention and for Maria-Fe — a trained creative designer — it was a matter of, if she couldn’t buy it she would create it. The pattern is based on a pouch sling with pure cotton outer, merino inner and folded edge.

Slings are a traditional way of carrying children and while modern countries have developed numerous methods to do the same task, slings are very much in use in undeveloped countries, with various adaptions in native cultures. As it happened her sister Bernadine Guilleux, had been living in Paris for the past seven years came back home. With a marketing and international business degrees, Bernadine quickly saw the market potential in the sling — and

being pregnant with her own child she too put the sling to the test when son Theo was born. Combining their skills the two sisters started Nestling — working from home, doing what they loved — designing, creating and dreaming of new products and styles. A rtisan cheese maker Artisan cheese maker Cathy Lang admits there were many late nights involved in setting up as one of New Zealand’s smallest registered cheese producers.

hen she and her husband Peter moved to their small lifestyle property just on the outskirts of the Pirongia Village eight years ago they were looking for a change of pace. Both were still working in Hamilton, Cathy as the manager of a busy animal diagnostic laboratory, and Peter a tutor in adult education. With the children recently flown the coop, and armed with a completed business diploma, Cathy was keen to find an avenue that would support them in their semi-retirement; something she and Peter could work at from home. For a few years self-employment remained on the backburner as Cathy mulled over the possibilities. With a long held fascination for cheese and cheese-making she initially started making cheese as a hobby, but after positive feed-back from friends and family and winning a medal in the hobby

section of the New Zealand Cheese awards in early 2007, going commercial as an artisan cheese maker certainly seemed a viable option. “I am really passionate about making cheese, I like to experiment and I thought to myself, working from home doing something you love doing would be the ultimate job.” She built a cheese room and small maturing room. To be able to sell cheese she needed to be registered and commercially compliant. Her microbiology qualifications and lab diagnostic skills developed over a 20 plus year career certainly came in handy working through the screeds of paperwork and accountability requirements by the Food Safety Authorities in order to meet registration compliance. Compliance was very hard to achieve. “No one my size had ever registered before so it was all new territory —

What has been noticed is that in the absence of reliable staff, there is a trend toward upgrading the automation of dairy and herd management functions to reduce dependency on staff, reducing ongoing labour costs and more importantly increasing the efficiency of the overall system. The hybrid and electric revolution which is swiftly gaining momentum in the world of road-going vehicles would seem to be a world away from the realities of a hard day’s work in rural New Zealand. Trout release into Lake Rotoma Around 150 tiger trout were released into Lake Rotoma late last month to mark the 150-year anniversary of acclimatisation societies. Set up in the 1800s, the societies preceded Fish and Game. While tiger trout, a cross between brown trout and American brook char can't breed themselves, the species were developed about 10 years ago to provide some uniqueness to the lakes. It's been four years since the previous release of 200 tiger trout and recent angler reports have encouraged the programme to continue. Plans are to release a further hundred next year. The tiger trout lives for a long time and can grow in size to about eight kilograms.

ounded in America in 1996 the inaugural New Zealand programme was held in Rotorua in February 2010 and again in the early months of 2011. The programme provides retreats at no cost to participants, which allow those whose lives have been profoundly affected by breast cancer to gather in a beautiful, natural setting and learn to fly fish. The retreat weekend is one of fun and support — it incorporates educational services, a pamper session, camaraderie, and the sport of fly fishing to promote mental and physical healing. Professional medical volunteers are in attendance during the weekend Trained volunteers encourage the attendees to participate at whatever level they can. On the Sunday some of New Zealand’s finest anglers — including a few of the NZ Silver Flies — the

representative fly fishing team — come along to guide the participants. “We are honoured to have this very special relationship with the Silver Flies, said CFR spokesperson, Sherrie Feickert. “A lot of very special caring individuals work quietly behind the scenes help to make these weekends happen,” she said. The retreats are held in the Rotorua, Te Awamutu and Nelson areas, and participants only need to get to the location. Once there, they are outfitted with fly fishing gear which they use while at the retreat. Each retreat accommodates 14 participants who apply and are selected through a random draw. Participants learn to cast, tie the basic knots and understand what fish eat. With the help of CFR staff and volunteers they practise catch and release techniques. Comfortable shared lodgings and allday refreshments with seasonal fruit and snacks provided.

meal times with you, taking care of your needs and sharing in your daily recollections,” said Ms Feickert. Next year’s retreats are available February 17-19 in Te Awamutu, March 9-11, in Rotorua and March 23-25, in Nelson. The programmer relies on the generosity of individual donors, foundation grants, companies and organisations. Waikato Dairy Road show to feature Cow Signals Specialist Irish veterinarian and Cow Signals trainer Martin Kavanagh will be the speaker in a dairy road show that will feature talks on his management and state of the art feeding systems, along with onfarm demonstrations. Martin Kavanagh spent 14 years in veterinary practice in Ireland specialising in herd health management before becoming Keenan’s European veterinary director in 2007. In 2009 he set up Cow Solutions, an independent company that provided herd management systems to maximise cow health and output. His New Zealand presentations will focus on the role of feed supplements in pasture-based dairying. “Pasture grazing provides dairy cows six freedoms that support health and productivity: water, feed, light, air, space and rest. Feed can be limited in grass-based systems, however,

and that can be restrictive, especially for high yielding cows,” Martin Kavanagh says.

Martin Kavanagh will present Cow Signals at Grass. An intriguing presentation looking at the body language of Cows.

“Forage-based supplements enable farmers to get the most out of the pasture environment. But supplements must be used safely and effectively to maintain body condition, rumen health and good metabolic process. The Cow Signals approach can help dairy farmers monitor their supplements regime. It gives farmers the tools to recognise the signs of cow health and the means to link this to what they are doing right or wrong.”
