The Asian import can cause significant damage to fruit and vegetable crops as well as threatening native birds. They have been spotted in the Waikato and councils and the Ministry for Primary Industries and the Department of Conservation, have set up a reward for information leading to the capture of one of the birds. “We’ve had more than 70 calls about possible sightings since we offered the $300 reward but are still working to capture one of these birds,” said DoC’s Liz Brooks. “We’re asking the public call 0800 80 99 66 if they think they see one. To encourage this we’ve increased the reward to $1,000.” Red-vented bulbuls have been sighted in Walton, between Morrinsville and Matamata in Waikato. In another avian development, Hamilton City Council, Landcare Research and Waikato Regional Council are teaming up to boost the popular Hamilton Halo project, aimed at increasing the number of tui and other native birds visiting and living in the city. Under a new memorandum of understanding between the three partners, Hamilton City has committed to an initial three years control of rats and possums at 20 sites around the city, such as parks and gullies, from this financial year. In the early years of Halo, less than 40 tui sightings were reported in Hamilton. Last financial year alone there were nearly 1,600 and surveys indicate

increasing numbers of native birds generally at the Halo breeding sites. Under the agreement, the regional council and Landcare Research will provide technical advice and support to Hamilton pest control operations at the 20 sites, as well as continue with their involvement in control at the sites outside Hamilton. Landcare Research’s John Innes said that working with enthusiastic partners such as the two councils was by far the most effective way to get research results to make ‘a real difference in the real world’. In an example of public-private partnership that has been welcomed by the Halo partners, Perry Resources Ltd has agreed to undertake pest control at one of the Halo sites in the Pukemokemoke reserve 18 kilometres north of Hamilton. The company volunteered to do this at its own cost in its application for a resource consent from the regional council to operate a nearby quarry.

Regional Council’s mission outlined Waikato Regional Council’s incoming chief executive Vaughan Payne has signalled an organisational restructure over the next six to 12 months as a result of a ‘fit-for-purpose’ review. Mr Payne has briefed the new council and staff on the findings of the first stage of the review.
While it is too early to know exactly what the impact will be, it is expected most jobs will be unaffected. Where jobs are changed, staff will be offered redeployment if possible. “Over the past three months a small team has been gathering information
from surveys, benchmarking with other regional councils, and interviews. We’ve found we do a lot of things really well — where we are fit for purpose — but there are other areas we need to work on so that we’re in better shape to deliver on our purpose.”
Launched three months ago, it aims to ensure Waikato Regional Council has the right strategy, structure, people and operating effectiveness and efficiency to meet its obligations and challenges over the next four years.

A personal way
to promote wool by Colin Patterson
After growing up on a South Otago sheep farm, it is no surprise that wool has played a big part in Janette Osborne’s life.
A
fter becoming a chartered accountant and then working for 15 years in our capital city, Janette hankered for a return to her rural roots.
In 2005 she bought Briar Patch, a 12acre property just outside Christchurch. She then started learning the wool and yarn-processing trade while also raising llamas and black sheep. It was all done in her spare time. Janette worked fulltime as the accountant for H Dawson and Sons, the New Zealand branch of a British wool exporting company. However, the earthquakes of September 2010 and February 2011 wrought big changes. “My house was affected in the first earthquake. I lost my
office and everything in it in the second. That was not something I expected in Christchurch after living in Wellington for 15 years.” Janette sold her small farm and took her llamas and black sheep and relocated to Te Toko Station near the Waitomo Caves. Not only is the King Country ground more stable than that in Canterbury, Janette has more of it — 3,000 acres at Te Toko, compared with 12 at Christchurch. The move north came about through a close friend, Kim Osborne, whose family own Te Toko Station. Two years later Janette has no regrets. She and Kim recently married. Much of Janette’s time over the last two years has been taken up with her role as New Zealand secretary for the Campaign for Wool. Founded by Prince Charles (himself a sheep farmer) in 2010 it operates worldwide, getting out the message that wool as a fibre has attributes that its synthetic rivals cannot match. “The campaign is all about doing promotional activities at a low cost to create awareness.” One such activity was decorating 14 rooms with woollen products at London’s Somerset House. “Fifteen thousand people went through the place and it resulted in more than 200 magazine articles.” However, Janette now plans to spend of her time building up Briar Patch. Despite Kiwis being quick to join the move toward online shopping, Jeanette says current trading volumes through her site need to improve. “It’s not self sustainable at the moment.” However the potential growth for online businesses is huge, especially when you ally it with social media such as Twitter and Facebook. “Social media
is a real game changer, like the invention of TV. And traceability adds a point of difference.” Consumers like to know where their wool has come from,” says Janette. No longer can we consider wool to be an undifferentiated product, packed in bails and sent in big lumps across the world. “Ice Breaker and Just Shorn also offer traceability. People across the world now know that instead of being made in a big factory in China their wool comes from New Zealand.

Kim won’t be among them, with other commitments keeping her at home. Although she owns 17 llamas, it’s unlikely you’ll see any llama products for sale on Briar Patch. There’s nowhere in New Zealand that can process llama. “There’s a place in England that can do it but getting the stuff there is uneconomic.”

Briar Patch specialises in black sheep. Janette says buyers like black sheep because it produces naturalcoloured wool without the use of harmful dyes. “That’s environmentally friendly. Consumers like that.” Although much of her interaction with customers happens remotely thanks to modern technology, Janette knows the importance of face-to-communication. When Paul de Groot first saw a gorse and blackberry infested 10-acre block outside Cambridge he could not have envisaged that three decades later it would be home to New Zealand’s largest certified organic blueberry operation. In 1985 Mr de Groot saw an advert in the classified section of his daily newspaper. Intrigued, he drove from Auckland to look at some land that had never been farmed. “My parents saw something in it,” says his daughter Marije Banks. “Their ultimate aim was to live off the land. But they could not have dreamed how it has turned out.” Mr de Groot, his wife Mieke and their two children had migrated from the Netherlands in 1980, concerned that increasing population was making it more and more difficult to access the
outdoors. Initially Mr de Groot worked as a farm hand just out of Warkworth, supplementing his family’s income with commercial eeling and possum hunting. After three years Mr De Groot and his family moved to Auckland to become a greenkeeper at a bowling club. But he also wanted to make a living from his own land. That newspaper advert provided his chance. Then for another two years Mr de Groot continued to live in Auckland while coming to his property at weekends to clear scrub, gorse and blackberry and build a house.

As more land was cleared Mr de Groot and his wife began planting fruit trees, courgettes, lettuces, beans, strawberries and blueberries. It was trial and error. Because the land had never been farmed, there was no track record to indicate what grew best. That could only be found through experience. “It was not fast and easy,” says Mrs Banks. “It was slow and steady.” The de Groot family moved to the property when their house was finished in 1987. In the early years they made do by selling produce at road-side stalls. But an offer to purchase their entire blueberry production saw them ditch other crops to concentrate on blueberries. The de Groots bought two adjacent blocks in 1989 and 1991 to provide more space to grow blueberries. They were also adamant — they would grow blueberries organically, without using hazardous chemicals. “That was very new and radical,” says Mrs Banks. “My father had used a lot of sprays on bowling greens. And he believed they were detrimental to his health. He was adamant he would not use them on his own land. He wanted to create a fabulous product without chemicals.” While many growers believe chemicals are necessary to protect their plants, Mrs Banks says growing organic blueberries is both viable and feasible. “Blueberries are reasonably hardy and have disease resistance. As long as you keep them healthy they should be OK. Insects don’t attack healthy plants.” However, growing organically is labour intensive, as all weed eradication and removal is done by hand. “We employ a lot more people. But we

generally don’t get any more for organic fruit than conventional fruit. But it’s our philosophy and we believe in it. We’re not going to be changing.” In 1995 son Marco and his wife Kath moved onto an adjacent property. They were followed by Marije and her husband Richard in 2001. Initially all three operations were separate. But soon everyone realised it would make sense to combine three planting, processing and packing operations into one. So Monavale Blueberries was born. While they sell domestically, much of their production is exported. That is largely because the New Zealand market is relatively small — although it is growing fast. “We produce in one day what New Zealand eats in a week.” In 2009 they opened Cafe Irresistiblue on their orchard. “We had a little orchard shop — a tiny wee thing. Independent contract milkers
Dairy farmers employing contract milkers and having proceeds paid directly to the contract milker through their dairy companies, could find that their contract milkers are employed and bound under the 1937 Sharemilking Agreements Act which was introduced by statute of Parliament. This lower order Sharemilking Agreements Act allows men and women to be independent contractors without having to own dairy cows to enter into the New Zealand dairy industry. Many over the years have purchased their own farms. A dairy farmer employing a contract milker as an independent contractor, who receives his remuneration by so much a kilogram of milk solids (this is called a Walsh agreement), could if a dispute arises over the terms of the engagement, come under the jurisdiction of the 1937 Sharemilking Agreements Act and its terms. There is also the risk of the IRD not accepting that the employees are

deemed as independent contractors and have sought PAYE reimbursement payments from farmer employers who have entered such agreements. There is a big difference between the status of an independent contractor and that of an employee. The independent contractor must meet the control tests, the independence test, the organisation or integration test, the intention of the parties and the business test or the economic reality test. This involves whether the independent contractor works for other people or clients, supplies his or her own tools or equipment, has direct responsibility for the profits and risk of the business, hires or fires whoever he or she wishes to help do the job, pays accounts for taxes and government and professional fees and most importantly, advertises and produces a GST invoice directly to the farmer for the work that has been done. Any dairy farmer engaging an independent contractor to milk the cows or to do work on the farm, should ensure that payments are made directly to the contractor on the presentation of a GST invoice and the contractor provides a payment receipt. The intention of the parties is important. This test looks at the intention of each party to the agreement regarding the nature of the relationship. The fact that a written contract states that a person is an employee or an independent contractor, may indicate the intention of the parties but is not determinative. If the actual circumstances point to an employment relationship, then simply labelling it an independent contract will not alter the actuality.
The fundamental test looks at factors such as whether the type of business or the nature of the job justifies or requires using an independent contractor. Is there a time limit for completing a specific project. Can the worker be dismissed. Who is legally liable if the job goes wrong. Usually, an independent contractor agrees to be responsible for his or her work. He or she cannot usually be ‘dismissed’, although the contract can be terminated if it is broken. Dairy farmers using contract milkers under the Walsh agreement, do so in an endeavour to circumvent the 1937 Sharemilking Agreements Act, because they feel that under the variable order the cost of labour is too high, particularly under 300 cows or less where a minimum of 22% milk price only, must be payable to the sharemilker. Walsh agreement payments have ranged from as low as $1 per kilogram of milk solids upwards, and in many cases this is not sustainable remuneration. Farmers of New Zealand encourages dairy farmers looking for managerial employees to use the Sharemilking Agreements Order 2011. It is still the best way to encourage the next generation into farm ownership with the support of the banks and the farmer retains management control and it specifies the relationship and the obligations that must be carried out by the dairy farmer employer and the sharemilker. The hoof trimmers’ tools This month I am talking to you about the tools that we use when we trim, with particular focus on knives. These are the most important tool that you will use and it is important that they are used correctly which means they need to be kept clean and sharp. We get a lot of knives of varying quality sent to us from all over New Zealand to be sharpened. The main thing that determines quality is the hardness of the steel used. The harder the steel the longer it will stay sharp. Most knives are made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is relatively hard and therefore will keep its edge reasonably well. However, some of the cheaper stainless steel knives are very soft and will go blunt quite quickly. Often farmers will buy these cheaper knives because they tend to be used for many things other than hoof trimming and it becomes quite expensive if you have to keep replacing them. The better quality hoof knives are made of hardened steel. These knives will stay sharper for much longer than stainless steel knives, but they will rust if they are not kept dry. Because they are so hard they can break easier than stainless steel knives so it is important to use the right trimming technique. The horny tissue needs to be sliced off not broken off. What I mean by this is that many people tend to start a cut and then part way through twist the knife so as to cause the hoof to break off rather than making the slice clean. Generally people are not even aware that this is what they are doing, but it is something I encounter frequently when running training courses. When we trim cows it is important that our knives are sharp. We wouldn’t like it if a surgeon performed an
operation on us using blunt knives. Not so much because it is harder work for the surgeon but more because the end result is not the same. This is the same for cows. If we use blunt knives we are more likely to cut ourselves and the trimming job is not going to be very successful. By using sharp knives you can be much more precise with less effort. Sharpening knives is, however, not the easiest thing to do. It takes a lot of practise and patience. We use a bench grinder with a linishing belt. This will sharpen the blade and create a nice bevel. The angle that you put the knife onto the belt will determine the angle of the bevel. As a rule of thumb, this bevel needs to be a minimum of 10mm.

Many of the knives you can buy have a much steeper bevel than that which makes the knife much more difficult to use, giving you less control with your cutting. We sharpen the hook of the knife on a rubber disc attachment on our grinder. You can sharpen the hook on the outside if you wish, but you should NEVER sharpen the back of the blade. Future fuel rolls out today

We don’t know when the oil will run out, but when it does, this is the future of your ride to work or play. Toyota’s FCV concept doesn’t run on anything so prosaic as mere petrol — or even on modern lithium batteries. Electric vehicles such as BMW’s new i3 and i8 have taken a step in the right direction, moving toward the possibility of entirely battery-driven transport for the daily commute and beyond. But the holy grail of today’s auto engineers is to break free of the battery entirely, completely bypassing this form of power storage for something far more ‘Star Trek.’ The hydrogen fuel cell is a working reality — it’s not sci-fi, blue-sky thinking at all. Honda have produced working vehicles which run on the hydrogen cell principle, which (in very simple terms) uses the abundant gas to generate electricity. The output — only water. How’s that for enviro-friendly? Over at Toyota, they are taking the whole concept very seriously indeed. The makers of the uber-eco-mobile, the Prius, have just unveiled
their 2013 FCV concept, and rather than being a futuristic, slightly zany creation, this looks very much like a car you could see on any street. The difference between this machine and the electric cars being talked up by Munich is down to two very important numbers — a stated range of 300 miles per ‘tank’, and a three minute fill-up time. This leaves batteries looking drained, and promises great things for both Toyota and the fuel cell itself. The only downside — have you tried to find a fuel cell gas station lately? Early adopters of electric technology will only have to plug their cars into the existing grid. FCV drivers
may enjoy better range, performance and eco-credentials — but they face the prospect of waiting for an overhaul of the whole consumer infrastructure.

The Auto-Nav Predator Electric Kontiki Leading the way in the kontiki fishing field for the past five years is Predator. Designed, tested and manufactured right here in New Zealand, these machines are equipped with a new Auto Nav function that will self-correct its course and steer the unit to a pre-selected point. We have renamed this Auto Nav function as simply ‘Point-and-Go’. It takes only two seconds to set — all you do is point the Predator where you want it to go, confirm by pressing the lever switch, set the travel time (from five to 30 minutes), put it in the water, press the start button and away she goes! For those technical guys, at the heart of the Auto Nav feature is the onboard digital 6-axis tilt compass. That is a 3-axis compass with 3-axis accelerometers, plus tilt. You won’t find this model anywhere else, as the Predator team have designed and built it specifically for the Kontiki market here and overseas. As I have had a lot of experience with electric Kontiki’s, on a recent highly successful test run off Muriwai Beach I wasn’t firstly surprised at how nose-heavy the Predator was. But this is part of its design that allows it to punch through waves a lot more easily than many other models. In fact its shape is perhaps one of the most important design features. Its natural shark-like ‘stealth’ design
certainly cuts through the water during both launching and retrieving. The pectoral fins along with the threebattery ballast seemed to really dampen the roll or twist of the unit where other designs have struggled, while the offset tow point counteracted the torque of the motor. You would have to give it an A+ for design! The other part to this package is of course the Predator Winch and having a batterypowered model to perform this function was pure luxury. The winch itself is powered by a 150W 12V motor, pulling up to 60kg. The spool comes loaded with over 2,300 metres of line — including the 150m crimped section, and with two Haul Mode options it offers all of the versatility you need to cover every hauling situation. The variable speed mode was particularly useful when the fish were coming up on the beach as we could slow everything to our pace, making sorting the fish and cleaning the traces stress free. The new Predator Auto-Nav performed like a dream especially the way it accounted for the rips up the Muriwai beach, constantly correcting itself — it’s really amazing to watch.

Moisture is the key When growing trees one of the most important factors in getting young trees off to a good start is allowing them to get enough soil moisture. Apart from doing a rain dance the next best thing is to make sure there is enough bare earth around each tree. It may seem strange to a lot of folk but bare earth can be up to ten times wetter than a weedy site. Over the years we have collected 10k samples looking at soil moisture differences from one site to another and how this has had an effect on initial tree growth. For example if you plant a tree into a grassy site and don’t spray around it (we’ll call this the control), then you plant several more trees adjacent to the control, and after planting you spray around each tree the increase in tree growth can be quite phenomenal. Probably the best indicator of tree growth is to take the volume of the stem. Roughly this can be obtained by measuring the diameter of the stem at the base, and squaring that figure, then multiplying this figure with the

height of the stem. After one year, a tree which has had a 1 sqm spot sprayed around it will be 89% larger in volume than the control. A tree which has had a 2 sqm spot sprayed will be 211% larger by volume and a tree which has had a 4 sqm spot (or aerial sprayed) will be 348% larger by volume than the control. Continued demand drives market momentum by Rob Cochrane GM, Procurement, PGG Wrightson Wool
A continued demand for wool kept market momentum extremely positive during the past month with the majority of lots offered at auction sold to the exporting trade, and only very limited numbers passed in for failing to meet grower reserve levels. Wool supplies have remained tight and brokers’ pre-season estimates of likely bale numbers available for each auction, have to date been well overstated. To put everything into perspective, when brokers and exporters meet to discuss the season ahead and draft a schedule (or roster) of auction sales to be held, there is usually a reasonably accurate assessment of availability formulated using historic numbers, changing land use patterns, total sheep number forecasts, growing conditions and a few ‘seat of the pants’ feelings in regard to how the market is likely to be driven. Which then gives the meeting the ability to allow for a fair and reasonable number of bales which will be ‘re-
offered’ during the season after failing to meet grower or broker expectation at the initial offering. This season, with almost full clearances from the auctioneer’s rostrum, there have been very few reoffered lots in comparison to past seasons and therefore very little wool remains unsold on grower account. Prices for most types remained in positive mode with crossbreds generally enjoying lifts of between one and three percent sale-on-sale, during September and early October. With only two sales in each of September and October and lambing in full swing, crossbred wool types offered were limited, however a good quantity of hogget wools opened up in very good order. Whilst the market was very healthy, the spread of prices across the main crossbred micron categories, assuming similar wool length and style, between approximately thirty-two microns to thirty-eight microns, was covered by around thirty cents per clean kilogram. A slight premium could be observed for finer types, again of similar length and style. Main lines of crossbred oddments in many cases received prices only slightly below body wool values, on a clean price basis, with demand extremely busy. A small but very well grown quantity of Corriedale and Halfbred wool types offered was also received enthusiastically by the trade and prices remained firm throughout the month to six-week period.
Fine wool types also received improved prices as the month progressed, a reflection of solid demand for Australian fine wools during the same period, and as the main selling season continued demand from local exporters appeared to particularly reward growers for well prepared lines displaying good combing length and tensile strength. The market place will be closely monitored as it proceeds towards the summer shearing period and no doubt exporters and processors will be keen to observe what condition post-lamb shorn types are in when they come forward for sale. With a reasonably good lambing experienced throughout the country, many fleece wools will be carrying some degree of tenderness and cotting, and growers should be taking care that their in-shed preparation ensures sound wools are kept separate from tender wools and that overall length of each line is reasonably even. If growers are unsure they should liaise with their wool rep in conjunction with their shearing contractor well prior to shearing commencing. With the Canterbury A&P Show fast approaching there will be plenty of country folk gearing up for a week of competition, socialising and celebration. What causes facial eczema
Facial Eczema is a disease caused by fungal spores from the fungus Pithomyces chartarum that produce a toxin which when ingested by cattle can lead to the damage of liver and bile ducts. This fungus (FE) can cause lower milk production and occasionally death from liver damage. The damaged liver is unable to rid the body of wastes and the breakdown product of chlorophyll build up in the body causing sensitivity to sunlight, which can then lead to inflammation of the skin. The first signs of FE usually show up as a drop in milk production soon after the intake of toxic spores (sub clinical FE). Other signs may include cows being restless at milking time, seeking shade and licking their udder. As facial eczema becomes more obvious, another drop in milk production may be seen and exposed un-pigmented skin may thicken and peel. Especially prone are the white areas on cattle, teats and udder and inside the hind legs may also be affected. It is important to remember that not all animals may show physical signs of clinical facial eczema, but some may have had liver damage occur (sub clinical FE).
Facial eczema spores are produced when minimum grass temperatures are above 12° for two or three nights and humidity is usually high — this can occur in the months (January to May). The fungus grows on soft matter in the base of the pasture, so hard grazing during this period of increased spore activity may also increase the risk of spore uptake by cattle. Prevention should start early with zinc treatment, ideally two to three weeks before the spore growth danger period, for the most beneficial protection. One product that is suitable is Zinc 50 from Vetpak, it is a free flowing Zinc Oxide 50% liquid suspension to aid in the treatment and prevention of facial eczema in cattle and sheep, and is ideally suited for drenching or adding through an inline water medication system. Zinc 50 is suitable for longterm daily dosing until the pasture to be grazed is safe from fungal spores. Zinc 50 has a nil milk withhold period and is suitable for dairy cows.
Zinc 50 is available from your local veterinarian. Another product in the Vetpak stable is Green Apple Flavouring, which is a ready to use liquid flavour additive designed to mask unpleasant tastes such as zinc oxide. Green Apple can be added to drinking water, dry feed
or mineral drenches such as zinc oxide or magnesium sulphate/chlorides and this makes it an ideal partner when using zinc products to treat facial eczema. Green Apple Flavouring and Zinc 50 are both available from your local veterinarian.

SOIL is the stomach of the plant: please don’t feed it chemicals. We are a reflection of the soil’s health.
EIGHTY to ninety-five percent of plant yield comes from the atmosphere, while only 2–5% comes from the soil (sources vary).

FERTILISER programmes must be based around the calcium content of your soil. If base saturation calcium is below 60%, you will virtually have to purchase fertiliser ad infinitum. Urea and other soluble fertiliser products are deadly to soil fungi.

SOIL fungi are responsible for retaining 100% of available calcium in the soil. It is a fallacy that one tonne of lime, or another product, is required to move soil pH by one point. The soil microbes have the ability to move the pH of your soil without the physical input of calcium.

NOT all N, P, K, Mg, S etc is the same. Organic forms are far superior to chemical forms, and some chemicals are worse than others. The bio-available forms of nutrients are the only healthy options.

THE correct base saturation figures for pasture are: Calcium 68%, magnesium 12–15%, potassium 3.5–5% and Sodium 0.5–1.5%. Many New Zealand soils are well below these figures. For tree crops, vines and berries, including strawberries, increase potassium to 5–7.5%. Once these conditions have been met fertiliser requirements will drop substantially, and soil pH will auto-correct to about 6.4 when the above conditions are fulfilled.

SOLUBLE phosphorus products kill vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (VAM). Mycorrhizal fungi can increase the roots’ effectiveness by up to 1,000 times, and plants grown with VAM have superior nutrition.

IT IS extremely important to get functional calcium levels up. Calcium is responsible for carrying other minerals into the plant, however too much calcium can tie up other nutrients and cause deficiencies. Limit applications of agricultural lime to 500–1000kg/ha for one application. Limit fine lime to less than 400kg/ha.
IF LUCERNE, oats and similar crops have hollow stems, calcium is lacking and yield will not meet potential.
ADEQUATE calcium also translates into better stock growth rates and weight gain.
AN organic fertiliser programme must feed the microbes first, which will then feed the plants. Microbes include bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, protozoa, nematodes, algae, ciliates, arthropods and earthworms.

BACTERIA have a carbon — nitrogen ratio of 5:1 which means for every six bacteria eaten, five parts of N are released. Nematodes are 100:1, so for every 20 bacteria eaten, 19 parts of N are released into the soil. This is why it’s so important that the soil is in balance.

MOST chemical fertilisers kill or reduce microbes, causing imbalances.
THE number of earthworms in the soil is an excellent visual sign of a healthy soil, and they can produce 30–300 tonnes/ha of casts per year. Worm casts from 20 worms per spade square contain 5xN (1.2t/ha), 7xP, 3xMg, 11xK and 1.5xCa, far more than ordinary soil (62 earthworms per square metres). Sulphur, iron, zinc and trace elements also increase. Pasture fibre increases by over 100%.

THERE are about 2,240,000kg of soil in a 1ha paddock, down to 150– 175mm deep. SIXTY percent of the sugars manufactured in leaves are dumped into the roots at night. Because sugar content in leaves is highest then, endeavour to cut hay or silage in late afternoon or evening.

FIFTY percent of that sugar is exuded into the soil to feed the microbes. Microbes in turn make minerals available to the plant. The nutrient responsible for that happening is boron. Boron, along with selenium and cobalt, is commonly deficient in New Zealand soils.

CALCIUM and boron are synergists so lime is more effective with boron added.
FERTILISER and lime are more effective with carbon added. Carbon is food for the microbes, and carbon sources are aged sawdust, aged bark, rock dust, humates, charcoal, compost etc.

BRIX levels are a measurement of soluble solids (superior nutrition). Urea-fed pasture tends to have low Brix readings. The minimum reading for pasture to be able to resist pests and diseases is 12, while an excellent pasture will measure 24. A bee will not work flowers/nectar with a Brix level below seven, otherwise it will expend more energy in collection than it will get back. Over the past 12 months I have been helping someone with limited mobility. She had a combination of sore and stiff muscles combined with painful knee joints. Subsequent MRI and other diagnostics were inconclusive. As a consequence she could barely walk and stairs were almost impossible. In cases where there is no clear medical diagnosis I step back and use a process of elimination to find a starting place for nutritional therapy. The main source of her pain and stiffness seemed to be muscular though again MRI showed no structural muscle or joint damage. Additionally she was not on statin cholesterol lowering medication which is probably the most common cause of muscle problems that I assist with. My goal then was to reduce inflammation throughout her body while adding nutrients that can improve muscle energy and therefore muscle function. Our body repair systems including our immune response and antioxidant systems are all nutrient dependent. We made alteration to her diet and put her on a 3 month intensive supplement programme.

I started her on therapeutic doses of my multi antioxidant/ mineral/vitamin formula. We then added high doses of I think the best CoQ10 available starting with higher doses. With this we added solid Omega 3 Fish oil doses and a combined anti-inflammatory and a specific anti-inflammatory joint formula again at higher initial doses. Within a few months she started to notice some progress. The improvements have continued to where she can now walk, bend down, bend her knees and use stairs with relative freedom. Place soba noodles in a bowl and put hot water over them, let them sit till they separate (they may need a helping hand) 5. Heat your fry pan, add oil let warm up, add your red onion and let them become soft. Then add the chilli, garlic and lemongrass paste let fry off for a minute. Add prawns and let cook through until they’re coloured. 6. Once prawns are cooked take off the heat, drain the soba noodles, add to the pan and mix soba noodles and prawns together, then add to the bowl and toss together.
