Waikato-born man Craig Robertson has landed his dream job as South island Field Officer just two years after being awarded the inaugural Holstein Friesian New Zealand scholarship by the same organisation. Craig was the ideal candidate for the role within the not-for-profit organisation having spent many years involved with HFNZ’s youth arm, Black and White Youth, and displaying a passion and working knowledge of the dairy industry. “Craig has stood out since becoming a member of HFNZ,” says Cherilyn Watson, HFNZ General Manager and World Holstein Friesian Federation council member. “Being the first recipient of our scholarship, participating in youth camps, exchanges and in championships, as well as winning HFNZ awards, Craig’s progression to becoming a part of the HFNZ staff was natural. “We’re very excited to have Craig on board and we’re looking forward to seeing him develop further within HFNZ.” Craig says the job is like a dream come true. “I’m excited to get out and work with some of the most progressive farmers in the country. “I’m also looking forward to coordinating and encouraging youth, providing new and interesting initiatives to encourage membership and involvement. “I’ve always known I wanted to work in the dairy industry — I worked throughout primary and secondary school on the farm, relief milking and calving. When I was 17, a medical diagnosis cut short my on-farm career, and I had to start looking at alternative options in the industry.

Craig Robertson has landed his dream job

“I remember filling out the HFNZ Scholarship application and it asked how my intended study would relate back to Holstein Friesian New Zealand,” he says. “I expressed my desire to one day become a field officer for HFNZ and be able to work with and benefit farmers across the country. I see this position as an excellent opportunity in which to work with, be supported by, and help like minded people who love Holstein Friesians.” Craig, who is now based in Canterbury, has been a member of HFNZ for seven years and was appointed as an HFNZ Associate Judge.

Managing farm risks

ANZ SURPLUS TRUCKS NZ Wide Service

WorkSafe’s data from 2015 shows that experienced farmers carrying out routine jobs with vehicles are getting caught out. In 2015, there were 19 fatalities on farms — 16 of those involved vehicles. In more than 50 per cent of the incidents, farmers were aged over 55 and driving vehicles on sloping or uneven ground. “These were mature and experienced people doing jobs they would have done many times before,” said Al McCone, WorkSafe’s Agriculture Programme manager. “Examining vehicle fatalities from the last three years, we find that often the driver/rider had set out to do a fairly routine task like spraying or stock work.” The incidents had some common factors like operators or others being hit by the vehicle, or being killed during a rollover. “To keep yourself safe make sure the vehicle won’t move when you get out, and wear seatbelts when in the cab or roll frame. Extra care is needed when working on or near slopes, especially on tracks with steep drop-offs.” The quads involved in the fatalities ranged in age and size, and were often in sound mechanical condition, however, low tyre tread depth and under-inflated or uneven tyre pressure was noted as a possible contributing factor in some cases. Often the vehicle had slid on a slope and a number of incidents involved quad bikes overturning into drains, ditches or waterways. “Good practice like keeping at least one metre from a stream or culvert

edges, stopping and dismounting to spray, and working out ‘no go’ areas on farm in advance could all help prevent incidents,” said Mr McCone. “Any vehicle is only as good as the way it is maintained and used. Make sure tyres and brakes, especially the handbrake on tractors, are in good condition. It is essential operators know how to use the vehicles properly.” Farmers, both employers and employees, are also more likely to be working alone at busy times, so having a plan in place for lone workers means that if anything goes wrong, the alarm could be raised. “Like most risk management processes, it doesn’t need to be complicated,” said Mr McCone. “There are a number of solutions that send out ‘man down’ or just location signals. If you can’t afford these, then get a simple system in place where people check in at agreed times. If they don’t, then check on them.” The fatalities highlight the importance of good risk management and following safe practices. Whilst in the United Kingdom, Michele started working with horses in her teenage years. “I rode and showed horses in Ireland and Austria and I rode Arab race horses for people in Newmarket in the UK. I also worked for two top trainers — one was Luca Cumani who often has horses in the Melbourne Cup and I also rode for the top sprint trainer Bill O’gorman.” Michele’s family moved to New Zealand in 1970. “My daughter Bridget had calf club for a couple of years and then I decided that we would show cattle. My experience with horses has helped me greatly in getting stock prepped for shows because it is a similar concept

and it’s great because cows don’t bite and kick like horses can,” says Michele. She started showing Jersey cattle, borrowing calves from a friend and then they were given a heifer calf. “We picked a Jersey which we called Poppy and we love her to bits. She is now our matriarch and my 11-year-old son Gregory has continued to show that line. We have four generations from Poppy.” Michele says showing cattle takes a lot of commitment and requires a lot of travel. “The season has started and we have shows most weekends. Hopefully I will get to judge a couple. “I enjoy showing — there are trials that come with it but you work with it. I don’t do this for me so much anymore — I started doing this for Bridget but she is off doing her own now so I do it for Gregory. He has mild autism and it is good for him as it means he has to talk and interact with people. “I don’t use expensive semen, all my heifer calves are homebred and I still show at the top end of the scale. It does cost a lot of money but you just do what you have to for the stock. “To me if it is good on the inside, it is good on the out. I feed them all sorts of things including oil, salt, silage, meal and I ensure they are drenched.” Michele says people viewing the stock at the shows often don’t realise how much work is involved to prepare the cattle. “They see animals with lovely shiny coats and big eyelashes but this has

taken hours of work before the journey. “There is washing, clipping and grooming and it takes up to two hours to pack the truck ensuring you have everything for the trip. It can get stressful but once you are there it’s great. “We are not only representing ourselves and our stud but also Jersey and Holstein, Purebred and Ayrshire New Zealand. As I judge and breed I need to represent those societies and myself to the best I can. It takes a lot of work every day for a long time to get a new animal ready to show. “You need to get them leading, especially the big ones. You need to be

able to keep the head up as this helps control the animal. Once that head is down you are in trouble,” she says. “It is good when you have children interested in showing. :I offer to help people to choose a calf at a sale because I find it hard to see children with pretty calves that because of some bad fault they will never do particularly well. “It is not just about winning, but the smile on their faces when they get a ribbon is just fantastic, so why not get that ribbon with a great animal. says animals can also look good on paper but may not be good at all. “It is important to get good advice and then hopefully you will get an animal of quality. “The children have to talk to the judges and answer questions, and this boosts their confidence and helps with their social skills — when they get a ribbon their faces just light up. “For Gregory, it gives him a real sense of confidence and he knows he can do his best and often get a ribbon and that boosts his confidence every time.”

have 200 hectares of native bush in their ownership. “I am lucky coming from a farming family as I was able to slot back into farming after doing my OE. In my youth I got an adrenaline rush whenever I saw helicopters catching deer on the farm. It was so exciting and getting into deer farming later in life was natural for me.” They run 1,400 hinds and finish their progeny, targeting the premium spring chilled venison contracts each year. They also have a herd of 180 velveting stags. To spread their income risks across products and markets, they also run 1,000 beef cattle, 3,000 ewes and 900 hoggets. “Farming sheep has been a challenge this year, it is concerning what we are getting paid for lamb. What beef will bring later in the year is uncertain. There’s a real softness in beef futures

oday it’s still an exciting industry but for very different reasons according to William and Karen Oliver, who farm deer, sheep and beef across two Waikato farms. “The deer industry is in a strong position thanks to a lot of hard work by Deer Industry New Zealand and the marketers of venison and deer velvet antler,” says William. “Our deer are much more productive, our farms are more efficient and we are steadily moving our venison and velvet exports into added value products and markets. We have also been pioneers in environmental management. We were the first pastoral industry to develop a Landcare Manual and an awards programme for good environmental management.” The Olivers, who have been farming for 20 years, farm 1,300 effective hectares of pasture and

and an abundance of cheap feed around the world. “These challenges are making the niche value-add branded products that are being developed by the deer industry more important for us, as is the ability to be flexible with our on-farm policies. “I am on the board of Deer Industry New Zealand and we are excited about deer farming and its future. Like all industries, deer farming has always had its challenges with good times and hard. “Hard is never exciting, but it has encouraged the deer industry to be proactive, forging the discipline and strategies needed to add value to

venison and velvet. We are being rewarded for that right now through good strong niche marketing programmes.” William says deer are an intelligent animal, with great personalities. “They are easy to handle now that they are no longer the fresh-out-of-thewild animal of yesteryear. Still, you have to think about how to move and work with them. Karen often helps while we are in the shed. We find having women doing tasks like drenching and tagging works best.” The annual cycle of the deer farm begins in mid-February when the stags are joined with the hinds for the roar

(mating). By late April the stags have done their job and are removed from their mating mobs. This is followed by the weaning of fawns in early May. Hinds are traditionally fed on crops during the winter when the pasture is reserved for the weaned fawns which also enjoy supplements like maize to maximise their growth rates. “Good weight gains mean we can sell our weaner stags for chilled venison in late September and October when the market traditionally peaks. Good weight gains in the weaner hinds means they are more likely to take the stag as yearlings,” William says. Velvet from the stags is harvested during spring and this is followed by fawning in December. William says changes in regional council environmental plans pose the biggest challenges for deer and other drystock farmers. For his family the proposed rule changes under

Environment Waikato’s Healthy Rivers Initiative are extremely concerning. “We all want the same result — healthy communities and environment, but the journey to the end goal needs to be sustainable for all land owners. There also needs to be a gradual move from allocating discharge rights on the basis of existing land uses, to one based on the risks inherent in farming a particular class of land. “Perpetually locking in existing discharge rights, rather than the capability of the land — will not result in the best environmental outcomes.” William believes there is a great future in deer farming. “We are really proud of what the deer industry has done in terms of productivity, sustainable land use, and in improving the marketing of venison and velvet overseas. Deer farming has an important role to play economically, socially and environmentally.”

THINKING ABOUT THE

BY AYLA MILLER Surrounded by the world’s longest pest-proof fence, Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is an example of how regenerating forest behaves, and is providing encouragement for those wanting to preserve forest on their own land.

A

cting natural heritage manager Matthew Lark says often farmers or landowners become discouraged when they don’t see any obvious or immediate results in their native forest or on their wetlands after conservation efforts. “Regeneration and restoration of an ecology is a slow process. It doesn’t happen in a year or even five years,” he said.

“The first thing I would say to anyone who is wanting to restore bush or wetland is to decide what you are doing it for. Are you doing it for your own benefit, your children’s benefit, or to be part of a corridor and patchwork of regeneration in your area? “Take a look around you. Is there a common goal being held or is it fragmented? If you have large tracts of bush you may want to consider restoring

it for its own sake.” Matthew says the Sanctuary often get farmers contacting them and asking for advice about restoring their land. “What Maungatautari has proven is that it has taken 15 years of very hard work to get ahead of the game.” He says the first clear signs that the conservation efforts were working began to show after 2008 when rats and possum numbers were drastically reduced. “Species like rata, tawa, alpine species like totara and some of the lower species like titoki and ribbon wood began to regenerate. The programme began in 2001. The main fence was finished in 2006 and it wasn’t until three or four years after that that real regeneration started. “Now 10 years after that fence was put in place, the forest regeneration is very significant. Even vulnerable species that wouldn’t have survived with possums around are coping.” Matthew would also advise farmers who want to restore a patch of their land to first discover what exactly they are protecting. “Count the birds, get a botanical inventory of what you have got. Find out how much fresh water you have and what features are worth protecting. “There are a number of ecological consultancies who can help you to survey and there are people that can help you find out what you have got.

This is the very first step.” He also says that the restoration of ecologies has a definite positive impact on both the New Zealand economy and individual farms in the long term. “Often farms have areas of undeveloped land that may contain vital water sources, streams or blocks of land which need to be restored for soil purposes. If you do this 20–30 hectares at a time, it will undoubtedly improve the ecological sources your farm gathers, for example soil conservation, soil retention, substrate retention and geological soundness. It will also help to improve crops and seed dispersal.” Matthew says farmers need to think about the economic benefits for future generations A sanctuary staff member holds a Tuatara during a and not be put off by volunteer day to celebrate all the hard work completed over the previous year immediate challenges or slow progression. “It’ll be between 30–50 years that becoming more popular. Farms are land preservation will accrue. There are producing native bush and allowing wider economic benefits and aesthetic native and introduced species to thrive, benefits. The idea of producing land and many farmers find an aesthetic that is no longer just weed farms is pleasure in that.”

License to Farm

by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

It just had to happen. The chemical corporations domination of how farming should be, has taken us further and further away from the reality of real farming, hooking us into a chemical system that is costing the farmers dearly and locking us into low return commodity markets; where is the future in that! If you open your heart and your mind you will recognise the rising consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food, produced in a sustainable and ecofriendly manner. This is the new market and it is growing! Consumers have had enough of toxic chemicals in their food. They don’t want genetically modified food products, all they want is good wholesome healthy food, that’s not too much to ask for and it is an easy recipe to provide, but let go the chemicals first. Agrissentials multi-mineral microbial rich ORGANX™ fertilisers can change your farming system overnight.

And we cover Matamata-Piako & South Waikato Districts.

The process is seamless and extremely simple, basically, all that is involved, is to trade your synthetic, soluble, soil eroding chemical nutrients for Agrissentials multimineral, microbial rich, soil regenerating natural fertilisers, full of life and vitality. The corporate science that has been dominating our planet since the 1980’s, is just that; self-serving corporate science. For the past 30 years corporate science has been promising cures, but they never seem to evolve. The problem is that the chemists don’t want to stop the money flow. In reality they are trying to speed the business up by vaccinating every part of life — plants, animals and humans. So, from my point of view, keep your head down, but make sure your butt is not sticking up, because it will surely get needled. As a kid growing up in the 1940’s through to the 1970’s we recognised water as a healthy, safe commodity, to the extent that if you were thirsty you could safely drink out of the nearest puddle to you, or the streams, rivers and lakes. That was the system — you had trust in the water. However, over the past 40 odd years the heavy use of toxic chemical sprays and fertilisers have already reached a point, where water is not safe to drink. During the 1980’s, as a commercial grower, I read an article in an agricultural journal which stated that there were 10 thousand

tonnes of toxic chemical products sprayed throughout the planet every 24 hours. I was one of those people spraying toxic chemicals. Bad boy? Johnny! Go to the back of the class! Do we really need a license to farm? From the late 1940’s to the 1980’s our farmers were recognised as the best and most cost efficient farmers on our planet. We had farming intelligence way ahead of any other country and a strong team of independent scientists, funded by the taxpayer, taking our farmers to new heights. It was a magic period, with plenty of money circulating throughout all towns. Farming is a natural process and governed by natural laws that if followed will influence the production on the farm, keeping the whole system in a natural healthy state. Nature is all about health and fertility. Chemicals have the opposite effect, which favours the chemists. So, don’t panic, go Organx™ with Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers. Building Team Lamb

After a recent visit to the United Kingdom and Europe, B+LNZ director Andrew Morrison says it wouldn’t take much of a shift in consumer behaviour to make a significant difference to the global lamb market, and ultimately grower returns. “The visit highlighted just how much we, as international lamb producers, have in common,” says Mr Morrison. “All of us want to produce the best eating experience for our consumer and be rewarded for it but the challenge is growing the number of consumers who choose lamb over other proteins.” Across the EU, per head lamb consumption sits at just 1.9kg/head while beef is 10.9kg/head. “It wouldn’t take much of a shift in consumer behaviour to make a significant difference to the global lamb market and ultimately grower returns. EU producers can only produce 87 percent of what is consumed within those countries. France, for example, only produces 46 percent of its total lamb requirements so there is certainly plenty of opportunity for future growth.” He says as lamb producers, it is in all of our best interests to work together to promote lamb and lift overall consumption. “As ‘Team Lamb’ we need to work out how we are going to do that rather than try and shut each other out of any one market. “The most obvious opportunity for New Zealand is our counter-seasonal production which offers consumers the best-of-season lamb eating experience. I like to draw an analogy with strawberries

or asparagus. We all love that fresh seasonal produce rather than something that has been sitting in a chiller for months on end and New Zealand can offer consumers in the Northern Hemisphere prime, seasonal spring lamb.” There is also opportunity to work with our British and European colleagues to supply product for both internal and export markets and processors need to be part of that conversation. “Certainly, there is real interest in grass-fed lamb, so coupled with the best in-season production, we all have a fantastic product to take to the international market place,” says Mr Morrison. “I was travelling with B+LNZ chairman James Parson on what for him is an annual visit. Along with politicians and trade officials, we met with a number of farmer lobby groups in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France. It highlighted to me the value of building and maintaining long-term relationships with these groups and full credit needs to be given to previous chairmen and CEOs for their work in this area. “It means when situations change, such as Brexit, we are not just appearing

on the doorstep wanting our voices heard. “As a sheep farmer, it was really gratifying to see our interests are being well served by some outstanding people in the UK and Brussels.”

Technology for a future proof home The recent ‘big reveal’ by inventor and Tesla corporation owner Elon Musk of solar-electric tiles for future homes has amazed many but not those already involved in the building industry. Technology which incorporates power saving or sustainable elements is firmly in fashion, with opinions changing here in New Zealand to follow global trends. While it may be some time before Tesla’s photovoltaic tiles replace Kiwi corrugated steel on the nation’s roofs, a groundswell of change has moved through the building industry already. Stolidly accepted mainstays of a new build like the hot water heater and septic tank are being ousted by modern

energy wastage. In fact, the top three technologies asked about in builds and renovations all revolve around saving energy and hence saving money. Photovoltaic cells, windmills and battery arrays are often mooted by prospective home owners, and a calculation as to how soon the investment in such infrastructure will be offset is the critical figure here. Insulation, once the preserve of a small amount of pink batts in the roof, is now acknowledged as vital all over. And the cost of producing hot water has been addressed with a host of new options, calling on homeowners to decide between not just gas califonts, solar heaters, ‘wet-back’ wood fires and heat pump electric cylinders, but also hybrid combi-systems of all the above. When looking at new technology to make your new build or renovation sustainable, it’s wise to consider the payback time of the system you choose. While there is certainly a sense of pride in reducing our impact on the planet, the real cost to benefit analysis comes down to increasing the value of your home and decreasing outgoings to power companies within a span of years, not decades.

DAIRY

The value of effluent management Clean waterways are an ongoing rural concern highlighted by the fact that, tens of thousands of shoreline plantings have begun to make a big difference in water quality. But the real key to quality long term lies with the farmer. On the agricultural front the value of animal effluent is a fact of life and has consequences for the bottom line. Effluent disposal also means effluent utilisation. The by product, particularly of dairying, is a great fertiliser. It contains nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S) and trace elements that you’d normally pay for to have applied to pasture. The average dairy herd of 250 animals produces the same amount of effluent as a medium sized rural town. When spread over land and applied correctly the effluent of 100 cows can save thousands of dollars. While it might be ‘liquid gold’ water troughs need to be protected from spray sources as well as waterways, where the rule is to keep the distribution 50 metres away. Soil can only filter so much effluent and therefore application depths should be adjusted accordingly to reflect soil and weather conditions. Too much effluent can kill pasture — especially where effluent has ‘ponded’ on the soil surface as well as polluting nearby streams and rivers as it runs off paddocks into waterways. Then

there is ground water itself that must be protected, and that’s where local knowledge comes into play. Getting a certified assessor can be good practice, particularly when effluent systems have been upgraded. You may not be aware of all the rules that must be complied with. Dairy industry advice is that when buying or selling a farm, it’s advisable to get an independent person to prepare a comprehensive report. The assessor checks over the entire farm where there are areas that effluent collects and the corresponding infrastructure, including feed pads, underpasses, storage ponds and the irrigation network as well as a lot more. It is a thorough assessment and also diagnostic. It takes between three and four hours to complete. A report is then prepared for the farm owner or manager. Accredited designers should be called in when you are upgrading your system or installing a new system. The assessors are not designers, as they are trained to assess the current system on farm in a consistent way. However, over time there will be accredited designers that are also certified ‘WoF’ assessors. All the

information that is gathered is stored in a central database at QCONZ. It is only used to analyse trends on farms

over time and to see if there are any areas of concern that the dairy industry needs to focus more attention on.

Milk flows despite low prices In a year which saw the lowest milk prices in at least 20 seasons, milk production declined just one and a half per cent, according to the New Zealand Dairy Statistics 2015–16 released by DairyNZ and LIC.

Milk production eased slightly despite 52 fewer herds and 20,522 less cows than in 2014–15. In total, dairy companies processed 20.9 billion litres of milk containing 1.86 billion kilograms of milk solids in 2015–16. This compares to 21.2 billion litres of milk the previous season. “The average kilograms of milk solids produced per cow has gradually increased over the last 15 years and enables our industry to maintain high production year-on-year,” said Matthew Newman, DairyNZ senior economist. “On average, each cow produced 373kgMS last season — very near the 2014–15 record of 377kgMS and still above the 2013–14 production of 371kgMS. On average last season, each cow produced 4,185 litres of milk.” Overall herd numbers fell for the first time since 2007–08, now totalling 11,918. North Island herd numbers declined 122 to 8,696, while South Island herds increased 70 herds to 3,222. Farm ownership structures are also changing, with 30 per cent of New Zealand dairy herds operating under a sharemilking agreement in 2015–16, compared with 32.4 per cent in 2014– 15.

Owner-operator herds increased 256 to 8,315 herds in 2015–16, reflecting variable order sharemilkers moving to contract milking agreements after financial challenges with low milk prices in recent seasons. “The number of cows milked in 2015–16 declined 0.4 per cent to 4.998 million, despite a very high number of culled cows during the last two seasons. This reflects a high number of replacement heifers entering the milking herd in 2015–16, plus some carry over cows being culled. A further decline in the number of cows milked is expected this Matthew Newman, DairyNZ senior economist season,” said Mr Newman. Changes in dairy breeds continue, Malcolm Ellis says genetics and feeding with Holstein-Friesian/Jersey cross- these animals well ensures continual breeds now comprising 47.2 per cent improvement in milking productivity of of cows compared to 45.6 per cent in New Zealand dairy cows. Mr Ellis says this is a result of 2014–15. Holstein-Friesians now make up 33.5 farmers being more cautious in the per cent of the national herd compared to lower milk price environment. “However, 34.7 per cent in 2014–15, and Jerseys farmers understand the value of herd comprise 10.1 per cent compared to improvement and the expectation is 10.4 per cent the previous season. for activity to rebound in line with the LIC NZ markets general manager milk price.”

Over the fence post Lyn Mudgway, Director of Forward Safety NZ

Putting out fires I’ve just spent 7 days putting out a fire. I thought it could never happen to me, but my computer was hacked. I clicked on an email which said ‘Invoice’ in the subject heading and it was all over. Despite virus protection, ransomware had locked me out, encrypted all my files and demanded a ransom to recover them. This had to be paid within five days (or the sum would increase). I wasn’t prepared. I wasn’t backing up automatically, my ‘restore’ wasn’t on and my manual backup was weeks old. I was upset and angry with myself. Although I didn’t pay the ransom, in the end I spent a sizeable sum paying a computer technician to clean out my computer, reload programs and recover as much as he could in order to keep my business going. Seven days putting out a fire that should never have started. That got me thinking about the fire risk on farms.

There are plenty of places that came to mind: • The farm dairy where the switchboard often goes unchecked year after year. • The tractor or the old farm ute where birds nest every night. • The old grader that is used only now and again which didn’t get a checkover before start-up. • The implement shed where welders, drills and grinders sit beside the containers of petrol and oil. In all these situations fire is possible. But just like my computer, backup is needed. It’s so easy. Buy yourself a half-dozen Dry Powder ABE or BE extinguishers and they will do the job. Here are some tips to help you: 1) Check around the bottom of them

for the manufacture date. They must be checked one year from that date (not the purchase date) and pressure tested five years from that same date. 2) Buy them with a tag which you can punch to remind yourself when testing is due. 3) Mount them so they are accessible

SOLVING INDUSTRY PROBLEMS IN A SNAP by Ayla Miller Hamilton based business Coolsense NZ Ltd have been awarded the Westpac Waikato Business Innovation Award for their state-of-the-art snap chilling system Vari-COOL.

C

oolsense NZ Ltd is a Refrigeration and Thermal Energy Storage Systems manufacturing company specialising in the on-farm and agri-tech markets, primarily supplying chilling equipment to the dairy farm market. Director-shareholder and innovator of the Vari-COOL system Allan Steele has been working on different products for a while and says being recognised by his peers as having contributed something of value to the dairy industry by the Waikato business community is ‘humbling’. “I have put my heart and soul into the development of snap chilling technology

and the Vari-COOL is the one I’m the most proud of. I feel like I’ve finally got the product that I want and we are certainly seeing that with the traction we are getting in the marketplace now. “I am part of a close team made up of my business partners Tim and Kate Stace without whom I wouldn’t have been able to do this. We also have a dealer network around New Zealand that contributes to the company’s success.” Vari-COOL snap chills milk and puts it into the vat at under six degrees while the farmer is milking. It can chill not only the milk during milking, but also chill multiple milk vats, and generates hot water up to 70

Here Allan stands beside one of the Vari-COOL machines installed on a dairy farm. This is the most popular model which suits dairy farm sizes from 600 to 1,100 cows

degrees for up to 500 litres per hour. “It takes the heat from the milk and converts it to hot water for the farmers’ wash down.” The system also has an extremely high energy efficiency rating and Allan says it can save farmers anywhere between $4,000 and $12,000 in electrical consumption depending on the scale of the farm. It is also connected to the internet and works as a supervisory system by recording when milking starts, when it stops, what the milk chilling temperature is and how long it took. ”The Vari-COOL monitors and logs their

Allan with another example of an installed Vari-COOL system

own performance and savings. You can access your machine on your Iphone, Ipad, tablet, laptop or desktop computer. “You can be sitting in the pub and be able to check what temperature your milk is. “If there are any issues on-farm the machines will text you to tell you what the problem is.” Snap chilling is said to halve the bacterial content of the milk which in turn increases the value of the commodity. “Milk bacteria spreads asexually so one cell splits into two and so on. The snap chilling system captures what is called the bacterial lag phase

of the milk which is the short period of time before the bacteria multiplies. Getting the milk from the udder to the milk tank takes about 60 seconds. “For processors like Fonterra it adds value to the milk because bacteria are the greatest cause of food deterioration and temperature is the greatest single factor affecting bacteria growth. Snap chilling allows them to produce better quality products from the milk allowing them to create higher value products and thus better financial returns.” Allan says he was motivated to create a system like the Vari-COOL when he saw

there was going to be a problem with the current milk chilling methodology. “In July 2018, New Zealand’s dairy farmers have to comply with the new milk temperature standards. It is generally recognised that between 40–60 per cent of NZ dairy farms will not comply with the new standards without upgrading their current equipment. “There really wasn’t what I felt was a robust solution for New Zealand dairy farmers to use along with the current milk vat asset and to attain snap chilling with a solid return on investment. “That has been the drive for me to fix the problem that lies within the industry.”

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

Possible tough year

A range of factors including currency fluctuations, a weak and volatile outlook for lamb and wool, plus the impact of drought and facial eczema, which was widespread in the North Island where half New Zealand’s sheep are farmed, will impact on sheep and beef farmer profitability this season. “The Beef + Lamb New Zealand New Season Outlook 2016-17 predicts beef prices to remain favourable and limited availability should ensure good returns for breeders, however competition for store stock is likely to reduce the margins for those finishing farmers,” says Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief operating officer Cros Spooner. While sheepmeat prices are uncertain, farmer

reports indicate that it has been a very favourable lambing with high survival. The Outlook predicts that the average farm profit before tax on sheep and beef farms in New Zealand will fall 13 per cent to $67,000 this season. “This outlook sets the scene for a tough year and we’ll see farmers tightly control expenditure and focus on what can be optimised behind the farm gate

to make the most of the season and be best placed for the next,” says Mr Spooner. “With the completion of lambing and calving, the season is essentially set for farmers. Depending on their location, farmers will be implementing strategies to maximise returns. Facial eczema was widespread and farmers will be looking closely at climatic trends that might provide early warnings this season.” Mr Spooner says much of the outlook depends on the value of the New Zealand dollar, which is at 71 cents against the US dollar at the moment, up eight cents on this time last year. “This particularly impacts on sheep and beef farms because around 90 per cent of production is exported, and domestic meat prices reflect the export price.” The weakness of the sterling since the Brexit referendum in June also has a negative impact because the UK normally accounts for 20 per cent of New Zealand’s lamb exports. Much of the profit decline is the result of a fall in wool, lamb and sheep revenue and dairy grazing revenue. Cattle revenue is expected to be similar to last year with production up slightly but a continuation of the USD at its current level would reduce cattle revenue.

Cros Spooner — Beef + Lamb New Zealand chief operating officer

Mr Spooner says international demand is expected to remain reasonable for beef this year, while tight sheepmeat supplies in Australia and New Zealand have potential to support prices with the unknown factor firmly centred on the exchange rate trend for 2016-17. “In this context, any improvement in export prices is primarily expected to come from a weaker New Zealand dollar, but there is considerable uncertainty whether that will happen.”

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Mating and lameness How is your preparation for mating going? As this will be the focus for most farmers at the moment I thought it would be a good idea to talk a bit about lameness that is more specific to this time of the year — that is lameness in front feet as well as lameness in bulls. It is normal to get more lameness in front feet at this time of the year compared to other times. Cows are bulling and when they come off the ridden cow they land on their front feet. This produces more traumas to deal with than normal walking. There is not really any suspension in the front feet just like there is no suspension in human feet. People can create suspension by bending their knees, but a cow can’t do that with their front feet, which puts an enormous amount of pressure on the locomotion apparatus when they do land on their front feet. Did you know that you could break your legs if you jump off the back of a truck and you keep your legs straight? The amount of pressure that the average person puts on their feet by

jumping off the back of a truck is about 1,000kg. So it is no wonder that you do major damage if you keep your legs straight. In the same way there is a lot of force going on to the front feet of a cow when they ride another cow. A lot of the lameness in the front feet is ligament damage but we do get more hoof problems as well. This does not mean that this sort of lameness is purely caused by physical force. Again, the cow must have weakened claws from laminitis and then physical force will make the problem worse resulting in lameness. If it was purely caused by physical force, we would see a lot more problems because most cows do come on heat but in comparison there are not many going lame on their front feet. We can’t stop cows from riding each other and we actually don’t want to stop it so we have to look at minimising the stress levels on them and make sure that our tracks and holding yards are stone free. Lameness in bulls is slightly different.

ARE YOUR GIRLS LAYING GOLDEN EGGS? No, we didn’t think so!

A few things are happening with bulls when they arrive on the farm and when they go with the cows. For one the environment is totally different — different food, different routines and different lifestyle. I don’t think the testosterone levels will have an effect on laminitis but all the other changes currently do. We do have some physical problems as well. The wear pattern in animals that only walk on pasture is different from animals that walk on hard surfaces. When bulls all of a sudden walk on hard surfaces their hooves wear faster, and it will take about six weeks for the bull to adjust the growth rate to the wearing rate so a lot of bulls end up with thin soles. I think that the key is to have enough bulls to be able to rotate them and make sure that you use them in short bursts. Should you be interested in learning

RURAL WHEELS

New chapter in a motoring legend by Andy Bryenton

There are some names in the world of internal combustion which evoke images of racing glory, grand-touring luxury or off-road grit. Just mention Rolls-Royce, Ferrari or Land Rover, and a whole history springs to mind. But there are few, even in such lofty company, which call up such a tradition as that of the United States’ most famous two-wheeled icon — Harley Davidson. With a history spanning over a century, this is one badge embraced by racers, weekend cruisers and rebels alike. From the original ‘silent grey fellow’ through to the ‘knucklehead’ V-twin of World War Two, through to the big powerful V-rod of the present day, the story of the machines from Milwaukee would seem to describe an upward curve of displacement and power. But that’s a stereotype which, in true rebellious fashion, Harley Davidson is set to challenge with its Street 500 range. Stripped back and pared down to the essentials of city riding, the Street 500 is a pure Harley down to the nuts and bolts, but it is no big highway cruiser. With a 500cc Revolution X engine, finely balanced frame and frugal fuel economy, this is a bike meant to take on the competition in a sector usually dominated by the Japanese motorcycle

giants. It’s not the first Harley Davidson to go below the 883 Sportster in terms of displacement, but it is a new take on a classic design, reminiscent in many ways of classic British bikes from the golden age rather than the wicked custom Road Kings and Fat Boys which made the Harley name synonymous with two-wheeled power and style. That may seem a touch blasphemous, but it’s a growing market niche in the crowded urban jungle. The Street 500 is, as you’d expect from a real HD, no slouch when the horizon beckons. Liquid cooling means the 500 never loses its cool in gridlock, but this lightest Harley of all still packs a wallop of torque when the lights turn green. In true form for a machine bearing the classic black and orange badge, there’s no part of the Street 500 which doesn’t look mean, lean and customisable. It’s a breath of fresh air in more ways than one — a city cruiser proudly selfdescribed as a ‘cafe racer’, but one which stands out in the crowd, with retro

styling cues that leave no doubt as to its heritage. It’s a Harley Davidson for those who may never have considered getting into the saddle of this iconic brand —

an enticement away from the Japanese and Euro street fighters and into a very affordable take on motorcycling’s most enduring classic.

Pushing the limits

Racing refines vehicles — it subjects them to terrifying stresses, to endurance events under the baking hot sun and to flat-out sprints which test parts to their limits. Racing off-road is even more brutal than on the track and the new Can-Am Maverick X3 has been forged in that crucible. It’s been indelibly branded by the experience. There are two strands to what makes this off-road side-by-side ever so slightly mad — in the same league as freediving with sharks. It’s powerful in a way not seen before in such a machine, turning up the

heat with 154 horsepower. It handles that unstoppable wave of force with measured precision, floating over choppy terrain as though it’s not there. Too much? Traditionalists would say it surely is. But it’s too much in a way that transcends mere sanity. First, the power. There has been an arms race at the top of the side-by-side world for some time now and this new Rotax mill represents Can-Am laying

Forged in the desert, refined in the workshop, the Can-Am Maverick packs 154 horsepower

down the biggest cannon yet. Triple cylindered like the legendary Triumph bikes of old, but with the added whack of an intercooler turbo, this engine propels the lightweight Maverick X3 from 0–60 miles per hour in under 5 seconds. Once again, some would call it a case of overkill — but it generates some truly unhinged smiles. The neat trick here, however, is sending that power to the ground without simply kicking up vast rooster tails of dust. Can-Am are also well aware of the fact that their tri-cylinder rocketship is likely to be deployed on some seriously gnarly terrain, so to avoid having drivers shaken to pieces they’ve bolted on some of the most serious Fox Podium shocks ever seen. With a massive 2-foot travel, these monsters soak up withering amounts of punishment. Coupled with a trophytruck style chassis the whole setup glides over the badlands and sands like a bullet. The wheels and suspension work furiously beneath, keeping as much

contact as possible with the earth to transfer that snarling power, while the pilot and co-pilot remain snug in a cage of steel, barely feeling the jolts. When side-by-side off-roaders first came to these shores it was in their role as serious farm vehicles, while offroad speed was the domain of mad machines welded up from pipe steel by mud-spattered prophets in their sheds. Today, they rank in the same field as the Ariel Nomad and the ubiquitous Baja Bug. The Maverick X3 is the crossover point between fun and serious motorsport — a white knuckled portrait of excess not for the faint of heart, or those short of recreational cash. Then again, the price tag is far less than that of a full-size trophy truck or sandrail — and the smiles-per-dollar value is through the roof. That’s the method in all this highpowered apparent madness — making it safe and fun to rip through harsh terrain with a grin from ear to ear under your helmet.

EDUCATION The investment of a lifetime Education is often quoted as being the single most important investment you make in your life. It is your education that can determine what you will spend the majority of your life doing and how you will earn a living. Education is essential for almost every job but it’s importance stretches well beyond just earning a living. Learning and being exposed to new ideas is not only a thrilling journey, it can shape, grow and challenge you whilst offering a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Eleanor Roosevelt once said education is essential to good citizenship and life as it enables people to contribute to their communities and countries. It allows us to communicate effectively, read about new ideas, think of our own ones and complete tasks. So when you choose where and what you want to study, it is important to consider what you enjoy doing and what your purpose for learning is. Are you wanting to move your career forward? Is there a task you want to learn how to complete? Perhaps you just want to learn for the sake of learning or to find answers to questions? Of course education does not guarantee success and vice a versa. To succeed requires other traits that cannot be taught. Many people in different parts of the world don’t have the same opportunities

ADVERTORIAL

Taking pressure off sore joints

Sometimes health problems can become a sort of vicious cycle. Osteoarthritis can cause significant joint pain which limits mobility and can reduce the ability to exercise. Reduced mobility leads to weight gain which further reduces mobility and add extra stress to arthritic joints. I have had many clients in this situation and it can be very distressing. When someone is overweight and has arthritis in weight-bearing joints my goal with diet is initially just to create a healthier diet. If we just focus on weight loss this can create another cycle of yoyo dieting which has limited benefits and is a cause of psychological stress. Every meal should be nutrient dense with anti-inflammatory fats and regular protein. A nutrient dense breakfast could be eggs or wholegrain oats with freshly ground flaxseeds, dark berries and good yoghurt. Morning tea could be a piece of fruit and some raw almonds. Lunch could be a fish and avocado salad with olive oil and cider vinegar dressing. Afternoon tea homemade hummus and vegetable sticks. For dinner some protein, lots of raw and cooked low starch vegetables with

anti-inflammatory oils such as olive, avocado or coconut. To make a difference we need to start to break the cycle. We start with a nutrient dense diet that is at the same time anti-inflammatory that will over time result in weight loss. Supplements are very important and I add these like a 3 legged stool. Firstly we add antioxidants to slow the rate of cartilage loss. We then reduce inflammation with fish oils and curcumin (from turmeric) then add joint compounds especially chondroitin at over 800mg daily. These combined measure help reduce pain, reduce weight, improve mobility and the real payoff are improvements in energy and general health. Fee free top contact me to discuss your situation. Abundant Health Bettaflex Super Joint Formula

Successful partnerships Sharemilkers and farm owners discussed how to establish successful partnerships at a series of events run by DairyNZ and Federated Farmers at the Take Time Before You Sign workshops held recently. DairyNZ project lead Angie Fisher says the events provided information to farmers looking at entering sharemilking and contract milking agreements for next season, or wanting to improve current relationships. “There were 3570 sharemilkers, both herd owning and variable order, and over 1000 contract milkers in 201516. Alongside the farm owners they work with, this is a substantial group of farmers,” says Angie. “Farmers signalled that they treat sharemilking agreements as a businessto-business partnership. Both parties are highly engaged with current issues and willing to share their knowledge, experience and solutions.” There is a lot to consider when entering a sharemilking arrangement – it helps to have a systematic approach to ensure all aspects of entering into an agreement are covered before anything is signed and that you are familiar with resources and key people in your region. “Going in with your eyes wide open and understanding your responsibilities clearly will help improve the outcome for everyone.” David Hosking, a farm owner from Te Kauwhata has acted as a mentor through DairyNZ’s Dairy Connect in matters relating to contract understanding

Angie Fisher, DairyNZ project lead

and disputes. “If farmers are new to agreements, particularly those moving from a salary to sharemilking or contract milking, they need to be prepared. Becoming self-employed means taking on extra responsibility such as GST, ACC, income tax and health and safety, and it’s important to get good advice,” says David. “There are employment agreements that farmers can access, for example Federated Farmers have contracts that are updated regularly based on farmer feedback and any changes in the industry.”

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES November 2016

Council welcomes report Waikato Regional Council says a new report testing the implications of the Healthy Rivers/Wai Ora: Proposed Waikato Regional Plan Change 1 has provided useful data to inform the submission process. The Healthy Rivers/Wai Ora: Onfarm Project saw 13 independent farms and 11 Fonterra farms led through the process of developing farm environment plans. FEPs are a key part of the proposed plan change and designed to identify current contaminant losses and where those contaminants can leave properties. They also detail what action landowners will take to reduce those losses in a certain timeframe. Regional council chief executive Vaughan Payne said the Federated Farmers-led project identified alignment issues between the schedules in the proposed plan, which are open to interpretation, leading to widely varying on-farm costs. “This type of information is exactly why we are testing the implementation of Healthy Rivers/Wai Ora on farm. This information is invaluable for the submission process. It will also assist with the council’s implementation planning once the new rules become operative,” said Mr Payne. Report results suggest the average cost of preparing an FEP could be around $4692, while on farm management to implement Healthy Rivers/Wai Ora ranged from $0 to $785,687.

A dry stock farm on steep country allowed for a potential $479,138 in fencing costs to install an eight wire post and batten fence over 21.8km. While Schedule 1 (development of FEPs) provides for alternative mitigations, where fencing land over 25 degrees is not practical, Schedule C (requirements for stock exclusion) does not. In this example, under the proposed plan, the landowner would need to provide water supply for stock that currently drinks from waterways, at an estimated cost of $173,000. Other mitigation included three wire fencing, waterway crossings and planting for erosion control, taking the total cost to $306,549. Depending on the plan’s interpretation, the costs to this farm could range between $306,549 and $785,687. Mr Payne said the study also highlighted a need to determine the suite of minimum mitigations available to landowners to ensure they fully understand the flexibility and options they do have to tailor FEPs appropriately. The report also identified costs for a number of dairy farms where effluent management needed work. “This is work that needs to be carried

out to meet current requirements and it’s important to recognise that this is not a cost associated with implementing Healthy Rivers/Wai Ora,” Mr Payne said. The project was jointly funded by Waikato Regional Council, Federated Farmers Waikato, Fonterra, DairyNZ and the Foundation for Arable Research. The proposed plan was publicly notified on October 22. It seeks to improve water quality in the Waipa and Waikato rivers by managing nitrogen, phosphorus, sediment and bacteria entering waterways. The council has provided an extended period for submissions to allow people time to understand the proposed plan change and make informed submissions. Submissions close at 5pm on Wednesday March 8, 2017.
