figure from the report was that $247 million of additional GDP was generated for the New Zealand economy, which is an increase of $21 million from 2018. Eighty million dollars was also added to Waikato’s GDP.” It also proved hugely beneficial to the Waikato region with it estimated that every gate entry resulted in $312 in direct spending in the Waikato hospitality sectors including accommodation, restaurants, bars and retail trade. “The estimated brand value of Fieldays continues to rise with it being estimated conservatively at $610 million following the 2019 event. This is a promising increase of $122 million following the 2018 event. “Snapshots from this Economic Impact Report was released to exhibitors that attended the Fieldays Stakeholder workshops held in Christchurch, Wellington, Palmerston North, Auckland and Hamilton in early November. The full report was released following the last workshop in Hamilton on Wednesday, 13 November.”

An impressive $549 million in sales revenue for New Zealand firms was generated by the event with $183 million going into the Waikato region. This national sales revenue figure is an increase of more than $50 million from last year’s figures. Based on the official event attendance figures for 2019 of 128,747, it shows that each person through the gate contributes around $4,200 to the economy. “It is really encouraging to see such great numbers in terms of economic contribution, employment and GDP from this year’s Economic Impact Report of Fieldays,” says New Zealand National Fieldays Society general manager of Commercial Nick Dromgool. “We heard from several of our bigger exhibitors that this was a good year for them so it is great to have this backed up by the numbers. The report states that more than 2,000 full-year jobs have been sustained in the New Zealand economy from the 2019 event with almost 900 jobs sustained specifically in the Waikato region. Electorate changes in Waikato are included in a review by the Representation Commission, which is proposing changes to half of New Zealand’s electorates and establishing a new electorate in south Auckland. The commission has released its report on the proposed boundaries and names of electorates for the next two general elections. The public will now be able to have their say before the boundaries are finalised in April 2020. “Where possible the current boundaries have been retained to minimise the number of people affected by electorate boundary and name changes. Of the 71 existing electorates, 36 are unchanged. The adjustments in other electorates reflect changes in population since 2014 when the boundaries were last reviewed,” says commission chair Judge Craig Thompson. “In the Auckland region, the total number of general electorates increases from 24 to 25. The new electorate we’ve proposed is called Flat Bush. It takes in parts of the existing Hunua, Manurewa and Papakura electorates,” says Judge Thompson. In other changes: • Population from Waikato is added to Hunua, which is renamed Port Waikato. Adjustments are also made to the boundaries of Waikato with Coromandel, Hamilton West and Taupo • Helensville is extended into Northland, Rodney (now Whangaparaoa) and Upper Harbour, and loses the Waitakere Ranges to New Lynn • The addition of population to New

T

he 21-year-old is one of 65 students receiving the scholarships to study in China, South Korea, Brazil, Thailand, and Indonesia. The scholarships are designed to help improve understanding of the business practices and culture of New Zealand’s trading partners. “About 15 of us are going to Brazil during November and I am really excited. We will get to attend lectures at several

universities and visit different agribusinesses, I come from a farming family of four generations with a focus on sheep and beef. I have learnt from my grandad and dad who have very strong beliefs in traditional stockmanship, so I have been really lucky to gain old school experience. “My dad is big on ‘there is a right way and a wrong way of doing things’, and he believes stock care is the number one priority before anything else. They are passionate about animal health and

weeks of practical work on three farms including Rawahi Romney Ram stud and last summer I spent 11 weeks on Siberia Station near Hunterville, which has 19,000 breeding ewes and just under 2,000 cattle. “The job involved lots of yard work, dagging and drenching with eight of us during weaning and shearing.

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES November 2019

Growing up in a farming family Phoebe has had the benefit of learning traditional stockmanship from her father and grandfather

Learning about large-scale commercial farming was really eye-opening as you are critically looking at every animal’s potential.” Phoebe says with different goals and objectives, it was encouraging working as part of a big team in a different type of community. “We embraced new systems, and it’s going to be interesting to compare Brazil’s farming systems with what we are familiar with, in New Zealand. Brazil has a population of 210 million and is the largest country in South America. It has the world’s biggest commercial cattle and beef herd and is the largest cattle meat exporter, according to Trade and Enterprise NZ. It is also the world’s top producer of coffee and sugar cane. “I have already secured employment at West Wanaka Station when I return.

The station runs 14,000 breeding ewes, 2,000 deer and 1,500 cattle. I got the job through word of mouth and am extremely fortunate. A lot of students still don’t have jobs to go to after their exams finish. “A motto I live by is ‘you have got to be in it to win it’. A lot of people don’t apply for scholarships because they think they are not the smartest or that they won’t get it. My advice is to have a go.” It is advice the third-year Bachelor of Commerce (Agriculture) student lives by. Phoebe was recently awarded a $5,000 scholarship from Silver Fern Farms. “I applied after seeing a post encouraging applications on a NZ Young Farmers social media account. I attended the co-op’s three-day shareholders’ conference, which had an

New

impressive lineup of thought-provoking guest speakers. There were lots of forward-thinking ideas — it definitely got my brain ticking over and engaged. I was astounded to be chosen and am going to put the money towards my student loan. “I will miss being part of Lincoln Young Farmers. It is a very active club, and we have 27 club events in the 24 studying weeks in the university calendar. One of the biggest benefits is that you get to know students in younger and older year groups. It is a great way to make

friends and contacts. I am looking at going rural banking, but those graduate roles are difficult to secure so until then I will gain on-farm experience. “In Brazil, I am looking forward to being exposed to a new culture, beliefs, objectives and morals behind why they do things. “It is a good scholarship, and it is cool how they give young people the opportunity to go out and see the world. I recommend all young people interested in a career in farming to apply as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

AN EVERYDAY PLAYGROUND by Ann van Engelen Hamish Browne and Robyn Budd treat their 106-hectare property, Black Pond Farm, like going to their personal playground rather than work every day.

“W

e are both passionate about sustainable farming and purchased the farm two years ago and intend to leave the land better than we found it,” says Robyn. “We have placed 17 hectares of native bush under a QEII covenant and really want to make sure we do better for the environment, leave something positive and do things as close to nature as nature intended. “Tree planting is definitely part of our commitment to restoring the land, and we have already planted 2,500 native trees. Planting trees on a large scale is not without its challenges, though. It is really expensive and a lot of hard work to get them all in the ground. We want

to see results as quickly as possible on the land, and that is when we decided to apply for free trees through Trees That Count for next year.” The couple was approved for 1,200 native trees, which were funded through the Trees That Count marketplace by Vero, and they have already made plans for where they will be placed during the 2020 planting season. “Trees That Count is a programme of Project Crimson Trust, a conservation charity that has been at the heart of tree conservation in New Zealand for close to 30 years. They run the country’s first tree marketplace, which connects funded and gifted trees to community groups, iwi, local councils, schools and individuals looking to grow their own

planting projects. They are on a mission to help Kiwis plant 200 million native trees by 2026.” Trees That Count is supported by The Tindall Foundation and Te Uru Rakau through the One Billion Trees programme, alongside the many businesses and individuals who are donating through the marketplace. “We have a number of springs that start on our property. So we really feel a responsibility to provide an environment that encourages the natural stream life cycle to restore itself and thrive,” said Hamish. “We will plant half a kilometre of waterways with the funded trees and plants, which will provide shade and help stop erosion and sediment from entering

the stream, restore fish and vertebrate life and stop any nasties heading out into the ocean. When we first started regenerating the land, we planted 51 hectares with 13 grass varieties so that we have something in the ground that will grow in every season. “We have a 45 to 60-day grazing rotation for our stock, and we started to notice a big improvement in soil quality and animal health within a year. It really was a lightbulb moment for us as we saw things change so quickly. “The pasture is starting to grow properly now, and the animals are eating the good stuff and getting all the nutrients they need, and of course, what they poop out helps the soil. The breeding programme has also been part

of it and has contributed to the health of the animals — they are so healthy and happy. “For us, there are three things that made a big difference. Our organic farming coach, Greg Barclay from Soil Connection offered invaluable support in helping us define our goal, what steps to take in order to reach this goal, and keeping us focussed on the progress we are making. It is easy to get trapped in the ‘what needs to be done still’ treadmill. “We learnt in the early days, that our pastures and soils systems, must be given the time and space to get their highways and byways working at an optimal level. There is no room for shortcuts here, and we learnt to enjoy the process and be patient. We

always have a Plan A. However — it is inevitable that at times, nature, the weather or other commitments prevent this happening. When it does, we design a new plan and then get on with it. We focus on what we are going to do, and not what we didn’t manage to do — this keeps the whole experience positive, fun and enjoyable. “We hope that some of what we have been able to achieve in a short time at Black Pond Farm will inspire other farmers to give it a go, but whatever happens, we will be pretty happy in our little corner of the world. It will just be an ongoing and growing scenario for us working with nature and turning this into a beautiful, idyllic spot. We absolutely love what we are doing in our playground every day.”

Fast-tracking genetic gain BY ANN VAN ENGELEN Using genomic testing to identify calves with the greatest genetic potential, enabling breeding decisions to be fast-tracked by farmers who are using the technology to advance their herds.

D

avid and Pip Fullerton milk nearly 600 Holstein Friesians alongside their sons Alex and Dean. “We utilise genomic screening, which has been one of the biggest advancements in cattle breeding in the last 100 years. Through this we can tell before a heifer calf is weaned if it is going to grow into a profitable, highproducing dairy cow,” says David. “The process dramatically shortens the time it takes to identify important traits in an animal from five years to several months. The traits vary from a cow being a more efficient converter of feed into milk solids, through to being heat tolerant. We import our embryos

from Canada, the United States and Holland and are world-renowned for our genetics work.” The families’ stud, Waipiri Holsteins, holds the New Zealand record for the top registered three-year-old Holstein Friesian cow, which produced 1,292 kilograms of milksolids in the 2009/10 season. “We rear 160 to 200 replacement heifers a year and plan to genomic test 25 per cent of them using a service offered through Holstein Friesian NZ. We have exported bulls to Tanzania, China, Malaysia and South America and are exploring opportunities to sell semen into Zimbabwe, Vietnam, the

Philippines and Ecuador. Most farmers in those countries can not afford cooling fans, so we need to know our animals can tolerate the heat. “Genomic testing has huge potential to increase dairying’s profitability, and we’d be foolish to ignore the information it provides. The testing is most reliable and beneficial for New Zealand dairy farmers using semen sourced from overseas bulls. We can use the results to make informed decisions about which heifers to keep and breed from, or to sell.” Holstein Friesian NZ president Hennie Verwaayen says the reliability of the information provided is similar to a bull with 100 daughters, which are producing milk and whose traits, such as udder conformation, calving difficulty and fertility have been assessed. Henni and his wife Kerri were both born into dairy farming families in Holland. “My family have mostly dairy farmed since the 1500s and my parents always had Friesians as the breed come from Holland. I stuck with them here as I want to milk a cow that is a good size and does good production. We are after a good cow, with a good udder and good constitution that lasts long and allows us to lower the rotation rate, so we don’t have so many rotations for the amount of cows we milk. “With the testing, technology allows us to recognise good cows early on. In particular, the second and third generation of tested animals will give us a better direction of the breeding decisions we have made. We will see if

9

photo Bradley Cullen Hennie and Harvey Verwaayen with a bull born from an embryo imported from the United States they gave what we want so we can adjust our breeding decisions and concentrate on animals that make a difference. In years to come with environmental issues, testing will enable us to know from an environmental perspective what the animal is like early on to use our resources as effectively as possible. “We milk 380 Holstein Friesian cows with our children Harvey and Lucy. We first used genomic testing in 2016 on four calves born from embryos imported from the United States. Two of the calves were bulls. They were almost identical to look at, but the testing revealed one was among the top five

in the world for certain traits. We use the service provided through Holstein Friesian NZ to test all of the overseassired replacement heifers. If the results identify genetically superior heifers, we can do embryo transfer work with them or mate them using sexed semen.” The test has the added advantage of verifying parentage, which improves the accuracy of records and means they don’t have to pay for a separate DNA test. “New Zealand is languishing behind in adopting this technology, and our association is endeavouring to change that,” he said.

“In June, Holstein Friesian NZ teamed up with Weatherbys Scientific in Ireland to offer a genomic testing service. Farmers can choose whether the data is reported through DataGene Australia or the Council of Dairy Cattle Breeding in the United States. Animals can also be tested to determine if they will produce sought-after A2 milk and if they are polled. “Currently the annual value of genetic gain in the New Zealand dairy herd is worth around $11 per cow, which is almost twice as high in Australia where the use of genomic screening is more widespread.”

Positive support for fruit

ADVERTORIAL

What’s up with turmeric? by John Arts

My motorcycle tour in India in a few years ago was a feast for my senses including, of course, my taste buds. Most curry recipes contain the brilliant yellow spice turmeric. It has been a mainstay of Indian Ayurvedic medicine where it is used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune-supporting qualities. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. I have many clients who have benefitted from curcumin often to calm tissue affected by inflammation. One client had a troublesome Baker’s cyst behind his knee. Taking my Curcumin product has greatly reduced swelling and discomfort. A study titled Curcumin: a new paradigm and therapeutic opportunity for the treatment of osteoarthritis (Henrotin, 2013) investigated the application of curcumin in osteoarthritis. The study concluded, “curcumin represents a new paradigm since it is not yet a recommended intervention in osteoarthritis but should be considered based on its safety and efficacy.” The study outlines the impact of curcumin on anti-inflammatory pathways, including inhibiting

inflammatory enzyme COX-2. This is the target of most anti-inflammatory drugs, and while effective, these come with a range of often side effects. I use a standardised extract of 95% curcumin extract and have created a proprietary blend to improve curcumin absorption into damaged joints and tissue. The normal daily dose of two capsules daily gives 1,000mg of this high potency extract. This is equivalent to about a tablespoon of raw turmeric. This is especially effective when combined with high potency grape seed extract. I use curcumin mostly for joint support and wherever tissue is affected by inflammation. Contact me for an email copy of my Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Guide. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Summerfruit NZ have announced the successful outcome of the recent Commodity Levy referendum. Summerfruit growers have voted overwhelmingly in support of renewing the summerfruit commodity levy. Voting closed on Friday, November 8 and the independent returning officer Electionz has advised the results of the referendum. Voters were asked to indicate if they supported continuation of the levy with 84 per cent voting yes and 16 per cent no. Weighted votes were 70 per cent yes and 30 per cent no. “This outcome is a strong and welcome endorsement of Summerfruit NZ and the work we have done over the last 25 years,” says chairman Tim Jones. “We have worked very hard to create a profitable and sustainable industry for our growers and this outcome shows that they appreciate what we’ve done and what they know we can achieve in the future. We could not have hoped for a better outcome.” The Minister of Agriculture will now be asked to grant a new Commodity Levy Order, which Summerfruit NZ hopes to have in place before the start of the 2020–21 summerfruit season. During the course of the referendum 53 per cent of eligible growers voted. “Our voter turnout was higher than we

Tim Jones, Summerfruit NZ chair

have recorded before and was also higher than most other primary sector groups have achieved over the last couple of years. This reflects the level of engagement we have with our growers. We would like to thank all growers for their participation in the referendum. The outcome means no change to maximum levy rates or to the levy collection method.

THE FLAGS THIS SUMMER

Ready for the festive season

by Andy Bryenton

Kiwi farms follow a calendar dictated by Mother Nature, not Father Christmas. So most veteran farmers know all too well the big squeeze that can occur in late November and early December, but it’s worth taking a look at what those trades professionals say when it comes to getting advice about having a happier holiday. “We’re here to help anytime, but our suppliers might not be.” That is a call to come in and stock up soon while it’s still possible, on those things, which may break or wear out during the festive season. While many reputable plumbers, electricians, mechanics and machinery repair technicians carry lots of generic and common parts, obscure and offshore sourced pieces can be hard to obtain during the holidays. Part of this is shipping, and part is that other nations take different amounts of time off on different days than we do. Get in now to order replacement parts, and don’t leave an ‘iffy’ or ‘on the way out’ problem to blossom into a disaster when it’s tough to get suppliers on the phone. “Big projects are best left until the fresh new year, not rushed.” It is a common answer from those in the trades, who often see demands for seasonal must-haves like air-con coming in at the last second. It’s often hard to

tell a determined customer that they have missed the boat, but it’s a fine thing to be first on the books for the new year. If it can wait until January, why rush things before Christmas? Take it easy, and good summer weather will still be with us for your project’s groundbreaking in 2020. “Don’t be shy — call out if it’s a real emergency!” Those in the trades and professions know that it’s a 24/7 job out on the land. For the most part, businesses respect the fact that their rural callers are not in the habit of making frivolous demands on their time. Though they often say it with a wry smile, most tradespeople really are happy to help their neighbours on Christmas and New Year or any time.

If it’s going to impact your family or business, they want you to call, and they understand that it’s no one’s fault that the unexpected can happen on any day of the year.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

by Andy Bryenton

When those sleigh bells are jingling, it’s time to consider how to one-up Santa and source the best gifts for your own friends and family. Here are the hottest picks for 2019, alongside some ideas that are better than the mainstream! For him — The hottest gift for the grown-up man this year may very well be a kind of cologne or a very expensive hot sauce. The hype for both Tobacco Vanille Cologne and Oprah’s pick, Truff white truffle chilli sauce, is astounding. However, the facts are that the man in your life would rather have something practical. That is to say, a fishing drone from Splash Drones, which can shoot HD video or harvest a fresh dinner from the ocean. That, or for gamer dads, the latest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on Playstation or Xbox. Oh, and don’t forget the DraftPour beer tap, which makes any can or bottle into pub-fresh beer on tap. Check it out on Amazon. For her — The mass vote is all for meditation and mindfulness colouringin books, cashmere clothing and the latest Apple ear-buds for crisp wireless music and sound. Moreover, there’s a better way to get awesome quality sound while looking good in summer

HIGH COUNTRY JOURNEYS Drive from station to station and experience the majestic South Island High Country

— Bose sunglasses. Google these cool frames with a classic look and integrated wireless speakers by one of the world’s leaders in audio. For the online addict, check out the remix of the classic Polaroid instant camera, which has been developed in accompaniment with Instagram, or help her relax with a heating and cooling massage pillow. There’s always diamonds, too, I am informed. For the kids — The hottest toys this year seem to continue the trend of disposable ‘surprises’; vast eggs filled with plastic trinkets and other tat — that are sure to be forgotten by 11am on

Christmas morning. Forget the trends, then, and go for the gusto. For the boys, radio-controlled cars are back with a vengeance. Check out the range from Monster Jam and those old classics, Tamiya for some serious off-road firepower. Girls may not say they want the deluxe ultimate Arandelle castle set from Frozen II, but that’s because they might not have seen it yet. Did we also mention that you can buy a life-sized replica of Iron Man’s infinity gauntlet that has lights and sounds? Dad might keep that one. Otherwise, err on the side of Lego, or the new, more compact Nintendo Switch Lite.

Time to embrace Kiwi Christmas culture by Andy Bryenton

It’s now pretty well established that the celebrity of the Christmas season (a small child from Bethlehem, Israel) was not born in the middle of a northern winter. In fact, with shepherds on the hillsides, a climate suited to robes and sandals, and a trio of ‘wise guys’ popping into the al fresco accommodation to deliver presents, the nativity is looking more and more like a Kiwi Christmas. We’ve got a lot to be proud of when it comes to our Yuletide festivities. There’s another thing, of course. Old Yule, and the image of a bearded man in furs who epitomises the season with snow and a big dinner, actually refers to Odin the old Norse god (and dad of Marvel’s blondest Avenger). One of his names was Jolnir, the ‘Yule Father’ or Langbardr ‘old long beard’. The real Saint Nicholas? He lived among pirates and sailors in Turkey, rather than carving the turkey. So, another Christmas icon who would be up for some beach cricket and a bit of a barbecue (also invented by pirates). We’ve lived in the shadows of frosted pine trees (a German tradition) and dancing snowmen for too long. It’s time to admit it to ourselves; a New Zealand Christmas is just better. A long, leisurely lunch sizzling over the charcoal. The best excuse ever to have a cold beer with uncles, cousins and friends and discuss the cricket. Pohutukawas overhead and the option of a quick swim, half an hour after pudding, of course. The kids can play with their new presents outdoors, which is a blessing for those that come with repetitive whooping and exploding sound

effects (or for parents foolish enough to have bought this year’s hot item, the Baby Shark singing soft toy). Right after Christmas, our northern relatives have to head back to grim, icy workplaces in the middle of winter. We get a couple of weeks to go fishing and finish off the leftovers. So here’s an idea. Let’s go all out with the Kiwi trappings of Christmas at this time of year. Santa in board shorts. Festive pina coladas. Carving

Future of low emissions

Forestry Minister Shane Jones has said trees can play a lead role in New Zealand’s transition to a low emissions economy. “This is reflected in a new request for research into innovative ways to use wood fibre,” he said at the blessing of the new government forestry hub site in Rotorua. Te Uru Rakau (Forestry New Zealand), the Ministry of Business,

Innovation and Employment and the Forestry Ministerial Advisory Group have issued a ‘request for proposal’, worth $250,000 to $300,000, seeking a commercially-oriented report on viable opportunities for investment

in bio-based products and bio-refiner y processing technology. These investments must use wood and wood fibre and be internationally competitive. “We know about the ability of trees to absorb carbon, and we have invested heavily in rapidly strengthening our forestry estate through initiatives such as the One Billion Trees programme and recent changes to the Emissions Trading Scheme. These forests will act as a carbon sink in the short-to-medium term,” said Mr Jones. “They are also vital to increasing wood and fibre supply over the next 20 to 30 years as we position our forestry system, or parts of this system, to manufacture a wide range of products that will help us adapt to climate change and meet our emissions target. We know that consumers want alternatives to concrete, steel and plastic. “In theory, everything that can be made from oil or non-renewable resources can be made from trees. The big question is one of commercial viability and how the big ideas can be made into reality.” Many countries have examined options for future reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and defined a bio-economy

Shane Jones, Forestry Minister

solution in which forests and forest products play a significant role. “Through this call for research, I would like to see a report that will identify investible opportunities for the production and manufacturing of high value, wood fibre-based bioproducts that will bring innovation and employment to our regions, and increase onshore processing of logs. “I am excited to see the opportunities that emerge and will help establish forestry as the cornerstone of our future economy.”

Bacteria and mastitis

DairyNZ senior scientist Jane Lacy-Hulbert answers the question if it is true that touching cows’ teats during milking can spread the bacteria that lead to mastitis. “Bacteria live on the skin, so there is always a risk that teats will become contaminated by mastitis bacteria during the milking process. Bacteria can be spread during milking by contact with milk from an infected udder. The risks can be minimised by ensuring good teat condition and effective teatspraying practices. “Foremilk stripping is the most effective way to detect clinical mastitis, which shows as abnormalities in the milk. Stripping a few squirts of milk onto a black paddle, rather than the ground, makes these changes more visible. “Farms that routinely foremilk strip tend to have better control of their bulk milk somatic cell count (SCC). Foremilk stripping offers other advantages to make milking easier onfarm. Maintaining healthy teat skin is important for successful prevention of mastitis. Bacteria grow and multiply in rough teat skin and teat sores. Foremilk stripping provides an ideal opportunity to check teat condition and spot any emerging issues.

“Milker injuries are common onfarm. Cows that are less familiar with their udders being touched can fidget and kick during cup attachment. ACC reports large numbers of injuries caused by cows kicking milkers, but when they have their foremilk stripped and teats inspected, cows become more accustomed to having their udders handled. So they are less likely to react during cup attachment. “Calmer cows also produce dung less frequently while being milked, kick the cups off less often, move through the dairy easily and produce less adrenaline and, thus, better milk let-down than stressed and anxious cows.” Early detection of mastitis increases the chance and speed of cure. To reduce the risk, in early lactation, initially foremilk strip regularly, then implement strategic stripping. Monitor the bulk milk SCC and filter sock, and strip more regularly when suspicious about mastitis. “Use gloves when foremilk stripping cows. Gloves have a smooth surface,

which is easier to clean and harbour less dirt and bacteria than bare hands. Review your teat-spraying procedures. Teat spraying after milking reduces bacteria left behind on the teats, which can include those left behind by foremilk stripping. To be effective teat spray needs to cover all sides of the teats, as well as the teat tip — this can be achieved by manual and automatic

spraying systems. If hands and teats are kept clean, it is a myth that touching teats will increase the incidence of mastitis in cows. Foremilk stripping, to find new cases, and teat spraying after milking, to prevent new cases, provide effective control of mastitis. LOW COST SYSTEM WITH PRACTICAL MANAGEMENT This unique ultra-low application depth and ultra-low rate application system is based on applying farm dairy effluent at levels that fall well below pasture uptake. The system starts with a unique patented weeping wall encased in a concrete lined bunker. The weeping wall removes the solids and allows the liquid to flow into a pump chamber. Green water is then pumped to a tank for recycling. External yarding can then be automatically cleaned with greenwater via floodwash or backing gate nozzles, effectively cleaning yards without the use of fresh water. This reduces the water take from the standard 50 to 70lt/cow to 20 to 25lt/cow. The Clean Green Effluent System’s patented automated distribution system allows liquid to be dispersed over large areas at a super low rate of 1/4mm application depth. Effluent can be safely dispersed nearly every day of the year meaning there is no nitrogen leaching and the pasture retains all nutrients provided, thus increasing pasture growth by up to 35%.

Recent independent scientific tests have indicated that with this system a lower level of nitrate leaching can be achieved even in the winter; better than most other systems can achieve during the summer months. Due to the 1/4mm application depth and being able to distribute all year round, no mega ponds need to be constructed and therefore minimal storage is now required. The Clean Green Effluent System utilises as little as two 30,000 litre water tanks to provide storage for greenwash and effluent dispersed. As an advantage, the water tanks are guaranteed not to leak & have no rainwater catchment. Rainwater catchment in mega ponds equates to doubling the amount of effluent being stored and having to be dispersed by pump to land. Given the current amount of focus on New Zealand’s primary industry needing to improve its reputation, the Clean Green Effluent System is the obvious option for farmers and industry to adopt, ensuring our dairy industry continues to thrive; we can remove dairying as an easy scapegoat for the state of our waterways.

Benefits of the system • Small foot print • No storage ponds • Fully automated • 0.25mm application/24hrs • Low man hours to maintain • Low running costs • 60% fresh water savings • Fully patented system
