Problems with Iron and Manganese?

The regional council is responsible for 612-kilometres of stopbanks, which protect 253,000 hectares of land from flooding. It relies on licensees who lease land with stopbanks for grazing, to maintain the structures’ integrity. Integrated Catchment Management Committee chair, Stu Husband, said the last two winters had been exceptionally wet, and he thanks the farmers who had kept stock off the stopbanks during this time. “One way we protect the integrity of the stopbanks is by managing vegetation. It is good to see farmers kept stock off the stopbanks in winter, when it was wet, to prevent them from being damaged by trampling. “Many people do not realise that stopbanks are built and shaped from earth to a specific design and then grassed for cosmetic and stability purposes. The grass plays an important role to hold the bank together. Skippers responsible for life jackets Maritime NZ is urging skippers of all recreational boats, no matter how big or small, to ‘check your life jackets’. It is the skipper’s responsibility to have the right size life jackets for everyone on board and ensure everyone is wearing them at times of heightened risk. “If they do not have life jackets they can be fined and prosecuted but, in the most tragic situation, no court penalty will ever match the death of a family member or a friend on your boat,” says Safer Boating Forum chair, Maritime NZ deputy director, Sharyn Forsyth. “The skipper is legally responsible for the safety of their boat and all on board, and Maritime NZ takes a strong stance on this. Life jackets are the number one piece of safety equipment and must be in good condition to save lives. “Before getting your boat out again consider seriously — ‘Do my life jackets need replacing?’ Manufacturers recommend replacing lifejackets after about 10 years. “Kapok-filled life jackets should not be used at all. They have not been made since the 1980s and, even if they look brand new and have been well-lookedafter, should be replaced and destroyed.” Kapok is a fluffy, cotton-like plant fibre that can absorb water and cause wearers to sink. Many of these old life jackets also have cotton straps. Cotton rots over time — even if not used — and in an emergency can tear or break off. by Ann van Engelen The Whitford family have farmed their flock of Coopworth sheep since 1938 on their 785-hectare property at Waikaretu.

U

ntil three years ago Richard and Elizabeth farmed with his brother David and his wife Lyne for 35 years after taking over from their parents. They also have an additional 185-hectare lease block and farm cattle as well. “Three years ago through a succession plan, my wife and I had the opportunity to buy into the business with Uncle David and Aunty Lyne retiring,” says Tom. “We couldn’t have asked for a better start with farm ownership, and two good seasons with kind weather and reasonable returns enabled us to make good inroads into our debt. It is rolling hill country and mostly accessible by

quad bike allowing us to farm intensively, and monitor our stock well.” The family purchase their rams from Kate Broadbent at Nikau Stud. “Clive Woodward was the original owner of Nikau stud, and we are lucky to have one of the top Coopworth studs in the country in our valley, and we continue exploring opportunities with Kate to improve our flock. Coopworth are highly tolerant to facial eczema, are fantastic mothers and very fertile giving us lots of lambs. We farm intensively and enjoy working closely with our stock — the better we look after them, the better they will look after us.” Extra spring growth is baled for silage to feed to weaner bulls in winter.

“On our ‘sand country’ we grow multigraze leafy turnip as a summer crop to ensure we get our ewe lamb weights up for mating and plantain is grown and lambed on, to maximise lamb growth rates,” says Tom. Decreasing from five workers to three, the family considered reducing the sheep numbers when David and Lyne retired. “We considered running more cattle, and I had been interviewed in a newspaper article about our sheep operation and the state of the sheep industry, and Richard from Coastal Spring Lamb read the story. We had heard of the brand and were really keen on getting on board — we lamb in June, so our style suited what the group needed.” Run by Richard and Suze Redmayne, Coastal Spring Lamb supply New Zealand spring lamb to retailers across the country and for export. “This will be our third year supplying lambs to CSL, and we haven’t looked back. Rich and Suz are working as hard as us to add value to our product. Our decision wasn’t about getting paid more; it was about what Rich and Suz were trying to achieve. They are also farmers, and there is no middleman, and they continuously report back how the lamb is enjoyed all over the world. That is great to hear when you are doing your lambing beat in the pouring rain in July. “The lambs get trucked down to Fielding for processing — we try to get to target weight within 120 days. The product is promoted well and aren’t just thrown in the freezer at the supermarket with other meat that could be last year’s product. CSL aims to be the first new season spring lamb available to consumers throughout New Zealand. My dad has been on the property his

whole life and mum grew up in the next valley, and they are still very passionate about the farm. They love the breeding, doing the lambing and calving beat and growing their own stock from birth. “Mum has a good team of dogs and does a lot of the stock work. We have 130 Friesian-Hereford breeding cows and buy in 300 Friesian weaners yearly in late spring from rearers and carry them through until slaughter. Bulls are great for cash flow because you can quit them early if you get into trouble.” Up until recently, all of the cows’ progeny were kept. This year heifers were swapped out for bulls, as it was difficult juggling heifers with bulls everywhere. “The bulls are fast-tracked on highquality pasture and processed at 20 months. Although we have a big focus on reducing debt, you have to farm what you enjoy, and we enjoy having the cows. They have an important role to play in tidying up some of the rougher pasture.

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Graham and Bronwyn Phillips have been enthusiastic daffodil growers for more than 50 years, and the passion has seen more than 2,000 varieties established.

“I

was brought up on a dairy farm in Otorohanga, and my dad was very passionate about the flowers. He was one of the best growers in the country, and he also hybridised daffodils — raised them from seed, which is a lengthy process.” This method is how he established new varieties — crossing plants and waiting up to six years to see his results. “The first year you get one leaf, the second year two leaves and so on until a flower produces itself around five years later. For each seed you plant one in 50 may be worth keeping — it has to be something distinctly different to any

others that exist. I used to create up to 200 crosses annually, but now I am in my 70s, so don’t so much. We sold our business shares to our partner last year, but I still go down every day — it will always be a part of me. “We have been supplying daffodils to the cut flower markets since the early 1960s, and our property has grown from two to three acres, to in excess of 15 acres in planted bulbs.” This expansion represents several hundred varieties and more than one million bulbs. “The flowers are also grown for research and development, hybridising

and exhibiting at shows. Most people think there are only a couple of varieties, but there are many including trumpets, large or small cups, doubles and crownless. Jonquils are also a daffodil — it is like saying an Alsatian or a Poodle is a dog. There is lots of information available on the Daffnet or Daffseek websites. “I enjoy the whole process of growing daffodils. Their beauty, variety, shapes, forms and colours. It is like an artist visiting various galleries — it is a passion. “The plants handle the cold well and are the first things out of bed once winter gets you in its grip, they show hope. They are cheerful, and I think that is why the Cancer Society uses it as its symbol — it speaks of nice things yet to come. We supply the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Cancer Society with 18,000 bunches over a five-day period for their fundraisers annually. “The season starts in mid-June and runs for 17 weeks until mid-October. We employ up to nine people to help us harvest the crop. “Our season originally ran from late July until the beginning of September, but with new varieties, we have managed to extend. The trick to growing a good daffodil is like any horticultural crop; you need the conditions right, fertile soil, correct moisture, sunshine, pest and disease control. “Every year before planting the bulbs we do a ‘hot water’ treatment and immerse the bulbs in hot water with a fungicide at about 44C for one to three hours. This doesn’t cook them, but pests or diseases don’t survive, and we are planting healthy stock back in the ground.”

A IN &

The pests include the bulb fly, which plants a larva into the bulb and the nematode, a parasite that invades the bulb tissue to nourish themselves and destroys the bulb. “Always buy large, firm bulbs — not small soft and spongy. Often the less you pay, the lower the quality. “Specialist growers produce a list, and one bulb can cost $100 — this is like breeding material, just like with a racehorse you can spend a few hundred or a million dollars, but that doesn’t mean the horse will win the race. You may pay one dollar and get a brilliant flower. “Flowers left on the plant can last three weeks and picked flowers you may get 10 days. You can extend the life of cut flowers by putting them outside at night in the cool and bring them in each morning.” If Graham hasn’t been able to hybridise his flower of choice he has collected desired specimens internationally and it is because of his dedication to improving daffodils that they now have more than 1,000 varieties in their collection. “Bronwyn loves daffodils too, most of the time, they compete for her husband’s attention, but I bring her home some bunches, and it brightens the atmosphere, and she gives them away to share the joy with others,” says Graham. “Daffodils are very good, and they don’t say answer you back or ask ‘where is my dinner’, and they don’t say ‘I don’t like you anymore, I am defriending you’. “They are cheerful, giving and uncomplaining — if you treat them well, with dignity, respect and kindness they will repay you.”

The valuable Border Leicester BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

Grahame and Jean Sattrup along with their sons John and Mark and families are enthusiastic about quality and breeding Border Leicester sheep.

“M

y grandfather started using the breed in the 1940s — he had traditionally used Southdown over Romney, which was common, but he purchased some Border Leicesters at the Morrinsville sale and found them superior,” says Grahame. “The old Southdowns could have lambing problems, and the Border produced a better growthy lamb, so he stuck with them and started his own stud with some ewes and a ram he sourced in Canterbury. “When I left school around 1963, my dad also started a stud with sheep, and a ram from the South Island and

we still attend the Canterbury Show to source rams. “Border Leicesters are an improver breed noted for their mothering, lambing percentage and good milking. Put over a Romney they produce a good first cross lamb that grows into quite a big sheep.” Grahame says in the South Island they are often crossed with a merino. “We are still on the family farm that consists of 550 hectares rolling to steeper hill country. John and Mark do the day to day running of the place now. Our commercial flock has 350 ewes, and we criss-cross breed. At ‘tupping’ the Romney looking ones are put with a Border, and border looking ones go to a

Pay attention!

around road works Border Leicesters are an improver breed noted for their mothering, lambing percentage and good milking Romney — we try to retain a first cross commercial flock.” The stud flock of 80 ewes are Grahame’s hobby flock. “In the old days we had more ewes and sold 130 rams a year, now we sell 15. The national sheep flocks reduced from 75 million to 28 million across all breeds as people moved into cattle. Many sheep farmers suffered — but there is still a niche market for our rams that we sell from Northland to Gisborne. “The wool is stronger and weighty, and you get lots of it. It is generally used for carpets and classed as a crossbred being at the stronger end of the scale. Like my grandfather, we try to select for superior weight gain, growthy characteristics and good percentages. We can trace the bloodlines now, and that is a huge asset. “You need to have enough feed as they are bigger sheep. You wouldn’t generally have Borders on places like the steeper Coromandel hills if you are honest because of the ruggedness of the country — they are no different to a Romney. “We don’t have much trouble with facial eczema, but every 10 years or so anyone can get an outbreak due to climatic conditions. All sheep can get facial eczema; it is more about genetics. “Border Leicesters are beautiful sheep to lamb. You can be tagging the lamb, and the ewe will be right there under your arm. When we moved from Romney over Romney to Border over

Romney, it was very successful and sorted out a lot of issues immediately. When the first hoggets lambed there was no mismothering, they stuck with their lamb. They have twins and triplets, but I prefer twins as triplets can be difficult on hill country. “They get their unusual ears from being crossed with the North Country Cheviot between Scotland and England 200 years ago, and they have very clean features in the head. “We grow the rams out for sale, and they are grass fed, we don’t supplement or grow special crops. The young ones are drenched at weaning and through the hot summer months like any stock. From two years old they don’t really need it — but we drench our stud and commercial flock before mating and lambing to give them a healthy kick.” The sheep stand very proud and hold themselves well. “Border Leicesters were instrumental in the transformation to the more modern sheep. They are a good looking, big square framed animals and became popular in the 1960s and 70s. “Sixty or seventy years ago the old Romneys had gone woolly faced and crossing them gave you an open face — meaning they can see where they are going. My dad would shear the wool on just one eye of his so he could creep up on the other side and catch them at lambing — it was a very funny sight.” To diversify — the family raise 320 Friesian calves a year for replacement,

180 bull calves, 140 Hereford/Friesian that become steers and 250 dairy cattle are grazed. “We milk 30 cows to feed the calves, and we get them to two years old and sell 300 plus cattle per year,” says Grahame. “Our family will continue to farm Border Leicesters, the older generations enjoy them whilst younger farmers have moved to composite types — but it is amazing how many are trying Borders and enjoying the success to their flocks. “Their friendly nature and intelligence make them suitable for lifestyle blockers, and they produce quality meat. We recommend everyone try them and as a family, we endeavour to carry them on into the next generation.”

AG CONTRACTORS Getting the contract tender right The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has some advice on how farmers can implement safeguards in the often complex process of tendering for work required in order to reap the best rewards. “Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,” the ministry advises. Tendering is the process involved in responding to an Rfx, a catch-all term meaning ‘Request for information’, a quote, a proposal or tender. “An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straightforward. However, applying for larger or long-term contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete. You will need to be strategic when you

decide which tenders to respond to. “Going for every RFx you come across is a waste of time and energy. “Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise.” Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. “Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business opportunity. Always ask for feedback from the buyer on why your application wasn’t successful. “You can use that information to help you learn what to do, and what not to do, the next time you apply. You will need to think about the day-to-day and long-term effects on your business. “Before applying, ask yourself — do I have the people and resources to fulfil the obligations of the contract,

Post-winter cultivation is critical The future of farming could be at risk if the quality and extent of our soils are not maintained. “Sediment and nutrients from farming operations, along with pathogenic microbes, are some of the most important causes of reduced water quality during the post-winter period, when farmers are cultivating their paddocks,” says sustainable agriculture adviser, Bala Tikkisetty. “Topsoil erosion, especially in hill country, of bare or cultivated land, leads to the loss of valuable nutrients, and disrupts infrastructure and increases the costs of maintenance such as cleaning culverts and drains. “Landowners and cultivation contractors can help mitigate the environmental risks associated with cultivation and protect their soil resources. The greatest risk can be when the protective plant cover is lost through the cultivation of soils for pasture renewal and crop establishment.” Soils should be cultivated when the moisture content is neither too high nor too low. “To assess if soils are suitable for primary cultivation, take a piece of soil, half the volume of an index finger, and press firmly to form a pencil. “Roll the soil into a ‘worm’ on the palm of one hand with the fingers of the other to about 50mm long and 4mm thick. Exert sufficient pressure with your fingers to reduce the diameter of the worm to 4mm in 15–20 complete

forward and back movements of the fingers. Conditions are suitable for cultivation if the soil cracks before the worm is made. Soil is too wet if you can make the worm.” Contour cultivation, sowing at right angles to the prevailing wind, reducing run-off is recommended for minimising soil loss. Sediment and nutrients are carried to streams in the overland flow of water. Establish filter strips where water enters water bodies — healthy riparian vegetation improves bank stability, increases water quality, reduces stock losses, filters surface run-off and provides wildlife habitat.

“Good riparian vegetation slows runoff down so that sediment, phosphorus and faecal matter settle out before reaching waterways.” Up to 90 per cent of sediment can be caught and trapped faecal bacteria in grass strips will die off — grasses should be 15cm high minimum with a high density of stems and leaves at ground level for maximum trapping. “The spread of pests, particularly weeds and pathogens, by vehicles, cultivation machinery and equipment has significant consequences so machinery hygiene must be practised any time a machine is moved between properties.”

STAY AFLOAT Supporting rural women by Ann van Engelen

THIS SUMMER

Think water safety

Rural people have needs and concerns, and often it is the women who first see or feel the effects of stress set in, sometimes with no support close by, or not wanting to burden others with their problems. The Rural Support Trust was set up to help members of rural communities at difficult times in life, no matter who they are and what the circumstances. The support workers understand that living and working rurally can be a challenge and sometimes the pressure is too much. “On any normal day, we know that people can get exhausted in life and we also know that sometimes we need a break or someone to talk to,” says Rural Support Trust coordinator for Waikato, Wanda Leadbeater. “If more than a cup of tea and a chat is needed, we can connect people with professionals who can provide further support, including farming or business advice, financial information, health, mental health and counselling services. “We support all rural people — wives, husbands, partners, managers, staff and contractors. Most trusts run a variety of workshops in their area including wellness events helping participants recognise signs of stress

to your

and health problems and how to manage and respond appropriately to friends, family, farming colleagues or customers suffering from stress. “We realise both men and women can find life difficult at times, and there is no shame in that. Rural life commitments and responsibilities can become overwhelming for many different reasons, and we need self-care to help to protect the energy that we need to thrive and live our best life. “The Rural Support Trust workers want to connect with the community, and we hold various social nights including fashion shows, ladies lunches, and we partner with Rural Women as well. If you would like to have an event in your area, we can organise this. “Join us at an event and make new friends. We have a Christmas ball coming up in December and would love to see people come out for the evening to socialise and relax after another busy year.” If you need someone to talk to Rural Trust support workers

FOR RURAL WOMAN

Rural Women business award winners SAFETY FIRST

Rural Women New Zealand has announced the category winners and finalists for the NZI Rural Women New Zealand Awards 2018. “The NZI Rural Women New Zealand Business Awards are an opportunity to showcase the innovation and entrepreneurial excellence of women who own small rural businesses while also supporting their local communities,” says National president, Fiona Gower. “The judges continue to be impressed by the high calibre of entrants, who prove that there is breadth and diversity of enterprise in New Zealand’s rural communities. “Thank you to Premier Partner NZI; sponsors Dove River Peonies, FNZC, Hynds, ShearWarmth and Treadwells; and supporters Access Community Health, Agrisea and SWAZI.” NZI Rural manager, Jon Watson says each and every one of the businesses who entered is a winner in their own right and the judges found it difficult to make the final choice. “It was especially pleasing to see strong entrants in the two new awards categories this year — Creative Arts and Rural Champion.” The awards winners for each category are as follows: Creative Arts: Sophie Siers — Millwood Press Ltd, Hawkes Bay. Sophie’s children’s books have enjoyed international success using farming as the backdrop capturing the essence of rural living, creating exceptional stories that resonate with all children, whether they live in a rural or urban environment. Emerging Business: Hannah O’Brien — Hunt and Gather Bee Co, Waikato. This successful business combines an innovative product and marketing strategy, with a true desire to care for our environment and our native bees, while working towards eradicating pests. Innovation: Bridget Canning — WIZwireless, Wairarapa. Providing reliable internet and vast coverage to New Zealand’s rural communities is no small feat. Wiz Wireless has embraced the challenge of bringing connectivity and providing highquality broadband to rural Wairarapa. Love of the Land: Marie Taylor — Plants Hawke’s Bay, Hawke’s Bay

Rural Champion — Fly My Sky Robyn McKenzie. Fly My Sky is focussed on getting people to Great Barrier Island and back with a reliable and regular service and has a business plan centred on expansion. “The finalists chosen were the entrants who fulfilled and excelled in all areas of criteria for each category,” said Access Community Health CEO, Alison Van Wyk. “We encourage any rural woman who owns a rural business to enter next year — the recognition, support and prestige of winning is of real value.” The overall supreme winner will be announced at the awards ceremony in Wellington, on Tuesday, November 20.

ADVERTORIAL

Kickstart to healing Some people who contact me have straightforward problems. I was speaking with someone recently who has moderate osteoarthritis (OA) in her knees. We put her on a programme that included some dietary recommendation, some helpful tips and two supplements. I have no doubt that within three months she will be more comfortable. Others have complex problems. A woman in her 60s contacted me early this year and had problems with OA in her hands, knees, hip and back with sciatica down one leg. She had restricted mobility and also was very tired. I created a comprehensive support programme for her to reduce inflammation throughout her body, to improve circulation and improve energy. It included an intensive supplement programme for the first three months. This programme included high doses of omega-3 fish oil to supplement her high omega-3 and low omega-6 diet. I then added my joint support programme. It is a little different than many as it is high in chondroitin sulphate (CS). Studies confirm the benefits of high doses of CS. I started her on 1,600mg of CS, with 1,600mg of glucosamine and 400mg of a high potency, rapid absorption curcumin (from turmeric) complex. We then added a potent multi-

antioxidant complex that included acai berry extract, grape seed extract (OPC), resveratrol and others. Magnesium can be particularly effective to help relax tissue around arthritic joints especially in the complex tissue around hips and backs. Within two months she noticed her thumbs were less painful and her mobility had improved. As a bonus, the antioxidant complex had stimulated her energy processes and was feeling much better in herself. After five months she was now able to cycle again. Her thumb joints were almost pain-free. Now she describes herself as largely pain-free, has much more energy and feels confident about the future. The body is simply miraculous. All I did was to give her body what it needed and then the time to heal. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Stem cells to the rescue Linda Hoggard is a firm believer in the use of Stem Cell Nutrition after personally discovering the product helped her live a more positive life following an unwell childhood.

Linda Hoggard is a firm believer in the use of Stem Cell Nutrition to help heal our bodies

Linda decided to help other people understand how to release more adult stem cells to heal their bodies naturally and travels the world telling her story. “Stem cells are the cells in our body that constitute our bodies natural repair and renewal. We need them daily as we are constantly breaking down, however as we age our natural adult stem cell release rate drops by five per cent a year after the age of 25,” says Linda. “I was born in Pahiatua and had many health issues growing up. By 12 years old I knew I wanted to study medicine and at 15 years old I decided to become a naturopath, to really learn how to help myself and other people get well through natural therapies. “My father used to sell mineral supplements to farmers for animal health to prevent disease and used diverse pastures like plantain; these grassroots connections clicked with me from there. “I had practised naturopathy for eight years and by then removed the drivers of why I was ‘unwell’. However, my body hadn’t really recovered, then I discovered stem cell nutrition, this took my personal health to another level, and I started

using it with my patients and consistently see some very positive results.” Adult stem cells turn into any type of cell our body needs for healing. “If you take one supplement this is the one I recommend; it is anti-inflammatory, mood enhancing and nutritious with 67 vitamins and minerals. “Farmers work hard, and their bodies are breaking down faster than they can rebuild. Investing in stem cell nutrition means you can get an extra 34 per cent stem cells migrating around your body, pumping it full of reserves. “I encourage everyone to come along to the seminars Jane Bennett is hosting and hear my story and understand how adult stem cells work and repair the body. Linda introduced Jane to the product, after a major horse riding accident that left her extremely ill and depressed. “I was unwell for a very long time and the Stem Cell Nutrition has literally rescued me and given me my life back,” says Jane. For more information on how Stem Cell Nutrition can transform your life, phone Jane on 021 526 342.

Guidelines for farm safety Farm accidents are not inevitable, but they are unfortunately part of rural statistics whatever the best of intentions, so good advice is paramount. WorkSafe NZ says while there is no single product or document that is a blueprint, farmers should only employ competent and qualified professional health and safety advisers, with particular emphasis where staff employment is a factor. “When selecting a new contractor or buying stock, farmers do their homework,” says a WorkSafe adviser. “They shop around, look online, ask other farmers and make a decision based on sound information. The same should apply to buying health and safety advice and resources. “Farmers should make sure that they are not simply going to get a folder or piles of forms someone else has done for them. That won’t make their farm any safer. What they actually need is a way of building a health and safety culture into farm activities and constructing a really effective culture of involving

everyone.” There is no substitute for the unique knowledge the farmer, family and workers have of the land, its terrain, its facilities and day-to-day operation. “What’s most important is everyone on farm thinking about the risks and managing them, so everyone stays healthy and safe. When everyone is involved, there is a positive impact on other parts of the business.” While there are good health and safety consultants out there, they are not all of the same quality and effectiveness. “Farmers need to make sure they are working with a competent and qualified professional safety adviser — that may not be the first health and safety adviser they get talking to at the local field day.” To help farmers buy the right kind of support, the Health and Safety Association of New Zealand (HASANZ), the national umbrella organisation representing all workplace health and

safety professions, has developed a simple checklist. Ask them these five quick questions before making a decision: which professional association do you belong to – can you confirm this, what qualifications and/or certification do you have, what relevant skills and experience do you have for this job, can you give me examples of similar work you have done recently, and are you happy for us

to contact your clients about your work for them? Contractors need to know what a farmer’s health and safety procedures are — so they can assess their employees’ safety on-site. “Farm owners and managers must work with contractors to make sure they share a common understanding of the hazards that exist, and mitigation that is in place.”

The risk of spreading M bovis bacteria between farms on machinery is low, however it is good biosecurity practice to have a ‘clean on, clean off’ policy for both machinery and people, which will protect your farm business from weeds, pests, and diseases. Insist all machinery coming onto your property is thoroughly clean, and expect it to be cleaned before it leaves your property. Disinfectant should be used ‘after’ cleaning vehicles, equipment and boots/gear that have been in contact with stock or effluent — disinfectant does not work through dirt. Remember the rule for machinery, vehicles and equipment, whether your own, visitors or contractors — separate, clean and disinfect. Ask if it needs to come on-farm — ‘if not, keep it off’ and limit visitors to your property. Do not

allow any used equipment onto your farm that has not been cleaned and then disinfected — this includes boots, overalls and protective clothing. Provide a rubbish bin for dirty gloves, disposable overalls and other rubbish and have a place, with a scrubbing brush for visitors to wash their equipment, with a separate area and soap to wash hands. Keep stock trucks away from animal areas and have loading facilities close to the tanker track. Check with the trucking company that their vehicles are cleaned and disinfected after each client’s stock is moved. The tanker track must be kept clean with a ‘no go’ zone for stock to this area. Disinfect to destroy or inactivate the ‘bugs’ — apply the disinfectant and leave it to soak, so it works. Change

disinfectant regularly — any common agricultural disinfectants are effective against Mycoplasma bovis bacteria. Use the product according to the label directions or alternatively, you can use 0.2 per cent Citric acid — one teaspoon in one-litre of water. When disinfecting the farm dairy, you are required to use approved maintenance compounds. DairyNZ has developed many resources, including the Biosecurity WOF. Check out dairynz.co.nz/mbovis for everything you need to know about M bovis and biosecurity. If you are affected by M bovis, need support with form filling, getting access to feed, forming management plans, or you just need someone to talk to or get advice from, phone 0800 4324 7969 or email info@ dairynz.co.nz to arrange a visit from a member of the support team.

RURAL CONTRACTORS

Finding a good fencer Farm fencing is an ongoing expense and choosing the right contractor can mean the difference between good work and bad, secure property boundaries and stock security or wandering and missing animals. It is good to ask yourself if your fencer has a successful track record, provides high-quality work with the best materials — will they stand behind their workmanship, and how long has this company been in business? Common sense questions at the outset will have a bearing on the job being successful. These are all valid and important questions not just for the wider farming operation, but also closer to home. Increasingly, farming residences are graced with a swimming pool, and strict health and safety codes apply. You want to find out how long a company or contractor has been around, if there is a history of complaints and if they are active in the community. It can help you form a more accurate picture of the contractor’s business dealings and how the company has handled complaint resolution. When you find a contractor that you are comfortable with, ask to see

their portfolio. Portfolios are a source of pride to reputable businesses, the contractor should be more than willing to show you his examples of work along with giving you the addresses of a few places with jobs similar to yours. If the contractor is not forthcoming, look harder. Almost all reputable businesses have a web presence now. Get the contractor’s web address if they have

one so you can review the site. Often times, they have placed additional tools on the site along with their portfolios and references. The Fencing Contractors Association is also a good place to source local contractors.

Its a dirty job...but someone has to do it!

The NZ Effluent Expo is the one-stop event showcasing New Zealand effluent industry experts, and farmers are encouraged to de-risk themselves through education. This year’s expo is taking shape under new management alongside Waikato Regional Council, DairyNZ, Fonterra, NZ Dairy Exporter, Taranaki and Bay of Plenty Regional Councils. “We have some amazing sponsors and have almost 100 exhibitors making this the largest effluent expo yet,” says event coordinator, Amanda Hodgson. “We have relocated back to Mystery Creek and are expecting more than 1500 farmers to attend this year’s expo, which will be run over two action-packed days with seminars, a guest speaker and a Q&A panel including agricultural minister Damien O’Connor and Rabobank dairy analyst, Emma Higgins.” Seminars include sustainability and the future of good management practices/farm environment plans. The importance of adequately sized effluent storage and an insight into the dairy effluent storage calculator. Water efficiency on dairy farms and the importance of water metering and effluent system options for small herd dairy farms. “Our objective is for farmers to learn what is required from a compliance level right through to best practice and gain an understanding of all available options. Come along and discuss your needs so that you can plan, and futureproof yourself and your effluent system. “We want to encourage and educate farmers around what it is that the consumer wants to see, and how ultimately it is the consumer that drives regulation. There is some exciting stuff.” Amanda says, often a farm solution requires more than one company to

fulfil the whole project so networking is essential and this doesn’t happen enough. “To encourage collaboration between exhibitors and farmers we are introducing the Rabobank Collaborative Social Function on Tuesday, November 27 from 4.30pm to 7.30pm — tickets are $45 each. “So often we are too busy on our stands at these events to talk and make relationships with one another. There are some awesome companies out there doing amazing things with new and innovative technologies, and it is great to be able to discuss what is happening. This event includes dinner, two complimentary drinks and entertainment. It is a great way to

wind down after day one of the expo.” Tickets for the social function are available at office@effluentexpo.co.nz. The expo is free of charge and at Mystery Creek Events Centre, 125 Ohaupo Road, Hamilton on Tuesday, November 27 and Wednesday, November 28, 8.30am to 4pm.

In one of the closest of many contests between the short and tall of Hawke’s Bay’s giants in global shearing, Mr Kirkpatrick won the race over 20 fullwooled crossbreds by 11 seconds and ultimately the contest by just 0.3 points. “It was the first time Mr Kirkpatrick had beaten Mr Smith in a single-breed final New Zealand in more than 20 months. He kept in front most of the way on what were good shearing sheep, although his 18min 38sec for the 20 was the slowest time for first-off-theboard in the Hawke’s Bay final since 2014 and more than a minute-and-a-half slower than last year’s quickest time,” said Shearing Sports NZ spokesman, Doug Laing. “While Mr Smith had the better shearing quality point on the shearing board, Mr Kirkpatrick scored best in the judging pens. The pair were comfortably clear of Manawatu shearer Murray Henderson, and fourth was Masterton

shearer, Paerata Abraham. Poverty Bay winner and Pongaroa farmer David Buick was top qualifier from 23 in the heats but was eliminated in the semi-finals. “Competition organisers expressed a feeling of privilege to have new Master Woolhandler Pagan Karauria up for the day from Alexandra. :She won the Open woolhandling final, from runner-up and Poverty Bay A&P Show winner Keryn Herbert, of Te Kuiti, and Lenora Smith, of Gisborne,

was third whilst Amy Karaka, of Te Karaka, was fourth.” Ricci Stevens, of Napier, won the senior shearing final. New Zealand Shears Junior Champion Mark Ferguson had his second win — up a grade in claiming the intermediate title, and Lindisfarne College pupil Atawhai Hadfield won his first junior title. Summer Prichard, of Pongaroa, had her first senior woolhandling win, and Tennessee Kiri, of Masterton, had a first win in the junior woolhandling.

WHEELS

Meet the royal family by Andy Bryenton

Back in 1982, farming was a simpler trade in many ways. Nevertheless, the same challenges were on the mind of rural workers. The trusty two-wheeled farm bike had definitely replaced the horse, but when it came to lugging tools and equipment to far-flung quarters of the farm, something new was needed. Enter Whanganui Suzuki importer, Rod Coleman, who told the top engineers back at Suzuki headquarters exactly what farmers were asking for. What came back was a machine with four wheels rather than two, building on Suzuki’s already proven track record with off-road bikes and with small off-road cars. It was christened the LT125, and it started a revolution. Today, after 35 years, Suzuki still manufacture some of the hardiest quads in the business, with the hardearned name ‘king quad’ blazoned on the side. From the bulletproof and largely original layout of the LT-F300F through to the top-of-the-tree LT-A750XP, all share a common heritage and have been developed over those three decades using the same process which gave rise to the ‘granddaddy’, the original LT125. Suzuki listens to their customers, and make improvements to suit. That’s why, while the LT-A750XP — with its big bore, single overhead cam 722cc engine and power steering — seems a far cry from the simple original, it’s still designed primarily for farm work. It’s been designed to be easy to maintain, with a single cylinder liquid cooled engine placed low in the frame for stability. Designed with plenty of low-down torque, and despite adopting the latest CVT transmission, it still offers high and low ratios and engine braking for safety and security when the going gets rough. Electronic fuel injection has increased

ROAD SAFETY

TXT & DRIVE

both power and fuel economy, while power steering has made it easier to handle and more comfortable to command during those long days of work. Underneath it all — and underpinning the entire Suzuki quad family — is the sense that these machines were not

made for racing, recreation or style. From day one, all the way back in the 1980s, these quads have been tuned up for the Kiwi farm. It’s a singular purpose — but then again, farming here is like nowhere else on earth, and it pays to have the right tool for the job.
