Seventeen salaried positions are on the line as Silver Fern Farms propose to consolidate operations at its Waitoa and Te Aroha plants. Work at the Waitoa beef and bobby plant is likely to continue for bobby calf processing only for the coming season as Silver Fern Farms plans to optimise production at its Te Aroha facility. The newly constructed Te Aroha meat processing facility was officially opened late last year following a fire at the former plant in December 2010. Chief operating officer Kevin Winders said the change for the season is in light of a focus on optimising the cooperative’s processing facility at Te Aroha, which is only 10 kilometres from Waitoa. “Now the commissioning of Te Aroha is complete we are moving into a phase where we will lift performance and processing capacity to make the best use of its state of the art facilities. With Te Aroha operating at full capacity it is unlikely we will need Waitoa to process beef this season.”
The Waitoa plant will remain on standby in the event of a drought, providing additional capacity if required. “We have put a proposal to staff to consolidate the organisational structure of the two plants into one new structure with 62 positions based at Te Aroha,” said Mr Winders. Seasonal staff who worked at Waitoa will receive preference on vacant seasonal positions at Silver Fern Farms’ Te Aroha and Pacific plants. The Pacific plant is based in Hastings. A decision on the restructure was expected by November 1. Silver Fern Farms’ move to consolidate the Waitoa and Te Aroha plants follows the recent announcement of a proposal to sell its Shannon fellmongery to Hawke’s Bay-based Lowe Corporation. The fellmongery’s 86 employees are currently awaiting a decision on the sale of the plant and the fate of their jobs.

Honorary Doctorate for Sir Patrick Hogan
Tank Teller Water Tank Level Indicator
by Denise Gunn
Sir Patrick Hogan’s contribution to the New Zealand bloodstock industry will be recognised this month with a University of Waikato Honorary Doctorate. Sir Patrick and his wife, Lady Justine, founded their Cambridge Stud in the early 1970s with a handful of broodmares. Following the arrival of an Irish stallion, Sir Tristram, in 1976, the stud and its owners went on to build an international reputation for producing thoroughbred racing champions. Sir Tristram was named champion sire of Australia and New Zealand nine times and sired 45 individual Group One winners, including Zabeel. Zabeel was named champion sire of New Zealand and Australia 13 years in a row and sired 43 individual Group One winners. In 2000, Cambridge Stud sold the highest-ever priced yearling recorded in Australasian sales history at Karaka. This yearling, Don Eduardo, was purchased for NZ$3.6million and went on to win the Group One AJC Derby before being retired to stud.
Sir Patrick has been awarded both a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and a knighthood for his services to bloodstock breeding and thoroughbred racing. He was also inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2005 and the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame the following year. On four occasions, Sir Patrick and Lady Justine have been voted New Zealand Breeder of the Year. In 2004 they were voted New Zealand Owners of the Year. “Sir Patrick’s contribution to the development and international standing of the New Zealand thoroughbred industry is unparalleled and his hard work and passion for horses have won both him and Cambridge Stud a special place in New Zealand racing history,” said University of Waikato vicechancellor Professor Roy Crawford.

the titles OBE, CNZM, and legend of rural aviation. While the last is not a title bestowed by the crown, it is one which may have been the most pleasing to a man who had a lifelong vision associated with aircraft and farming. In 1936, however, the recruiting officer at his local Air Force base deemed Ossie unfit for pilot training, on account of his limited knowledge of advanced mathematics. It was a decision which did little to dampen the young man's enthusiasm.
During World War Two Ossie served in the Pacific theatre, where he earned his A-grade mechanic's qualification working on aircraft. When he returned to Tolaga Bay after the war, he saw a niche in the market for the idea of topdressing — and a surplus of ex-military planes with which to launch a business. Soon Ossie had his pilot's 'wings' and was ready to fly. Like fellow early adopters in topdressing Wally Harding, Lawson

work has been undertaken by Brett Puddle of Aeromotive. At this point we have built a shelter, painted and reassembled the plane, and we are ready for the next stage of the project — refitting and restoring the cockpit." Lynnette and the other members of the Ossie James DC3 Conservation Trust continue to work on the HighLand Duster, safeguarding a vital link in our farming and aviation history.
The HighLand Duster prior to restoration, at Mystery Creek
Field, and Airwork's Charles Brazier, Ossie turned to the durable Tiger Moth biplane. Ossie's plane was a salvaged one, but based on his success his fleet was soon to grow. Today one of his James Aviation company Tiger Moths resides in the national museum, Te Papa — but it is another of his aircraft which joins together two of his lifelong achievements. His daughter Lynnette James remembers it well — and not just from family photographs. That's because the twin engined DC3 which Ossie fondly named the 'HighLand Duster' is now a tribute to his legacy, situated at the Ag Heritage centre in Mystery Creek. The DC3 was purchased in 1954 to augment a growing fleet of Tiger Moth and Beaver aircraft flown by James Aviation. "It took a long time to convince the authorities to release the DC3," says Lynnette. "The air force just didn't want to transfer it over. But every time they sent a letter, my father would send another application back. That kind of incredible tenacity and drive is how he got things done." The DC3 enjoyed a colourful life before it came into Ossie's hands. Once

an active warplane, it flew much-needed supplies into Burma for the jungle combat group Wingate's Raiders. Later it served as a baggage plane for Queen Elizabeth II during her New Zealand tour. It took 15 months of engineering and innovation to turn this warbird into a peacetime topdresser, with Ossie and his team literally writing the manual for future aerial fert technology. Part of the deal which saw the DC3 released to James Aviation was the understanding that this hard-won intellectual property would be gifted to Ossie's competitors — a condition which Mr James accepted, advancing the entire industry by dint of his shared research. Between 1954 and 1974 the HighLand Duster delivered on average 100 tons of fert each day to Kiwi farms, breaking in areas too steep and remote for trucks, and in the process kickstarting not just an industry in the air, but also boosting farming on the ground. In a gallery of machines which have changed Kiwi farming history, Ossie James' DC3 would rightly sit right next to the ‘Dunedin’, the first refrigerated ship to export meat from these shores. Upon retirement, the venerable DC3 was gifted to the Agricultural Heritage

Museum, right next to another of Ossie's great achievements — the site of the National Fieldays. Mr James was the first president of the Fieldays association, and the same indefatigable attitude he brought to aviation may very well be one of the reasons that this rural institution has become the nation's biggest agricultural gathering. Over thirty years in the open air were not kind to the vintage aircraft however, and at the start of this decade a trust — the Ossie James DC3 Conservation Trust — was established to begin a complete exterior rebuild of the plane. Fittingly, Lynnette James is a major part of this effort to preserve her father's legacy. "We've built a building and completely renovated the plane," she says. "We were originally told that we couldn't move the DC3, but engineers’ reports said we could. Johnson House Removal moved it to the facilities of APS, where high pressure water and paint strippers were used to clean the surface. The bulk of the engineering

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it.This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs.Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be
operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce SeptiCure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. BREEDING RAMS
to provide correct genetics by Denise Gunn
King Country sheep stud breeders Ken and Rebecca Haywood have a long association with Romneys, stemming back to the early 1980s.
T
he couple were looking for a breed of sheep suitable for hill country, along with possessing good constitution growth and fecundity. They have since followed this up with performance recording, testing for eczema tolerance and more recently worm tolerance.
“We have started using the new 5K DNA test to improve the accuracy of our existing SIL breeding values,” said Ken. In 1989 the couple expanded their farming operation to also include Poll Dorsets. Ken said they wanted to expand into terminal sires with a breed that was both popular and capable of meeting hill country farmers’ requirements. “We have built a small Texel/Poll Dorset and Suffolk/Poll Dorset cross around this.
“This flock is performance recorded as well, with emphasis on growth, muscling and low fat. “We ultrasound scan and use some specific DNA tests for muscling and feet.” Ken and Rebecca take an active part in the sheep breeding industry and are involved with breeders’ club, Mid-Northern Romney. Ken is also the immediate past president of Poll Dorset New Zealand. Just under eight years ago, the Haywood’s moved onto their 785 hectare King Country farm from a smaller property near Piopio. An attached Maori lease is included, bringing the total to 455 hectares effective. A huge limestone bluff splits the property into two levels, with strongly rolling to moderately steep country featuring on the farm. Over the past eight years, Ken and Rebecca ultrasound scan and use DNA tests for muscling and feet

sales, particularly Romneys, as farmers realise the benefits over some of the crossbreds. The couple enjoy the outdoor lifestyle that farming provides and watching the improvements on their property taking shape. They have plenty of short term plans to continue developing the farm. “We still need more subdivision on steeper parts of the farm to get more flexibility with winter grazing and to improve pasture quality,” said Ken. “This will in turn flow on to improved stock performance and profitability.

fencing, drainage, lime applications and regrassing on the poorer less developed areas have taken place. The water supply system has also been extended and upgraded. The farm usually receives 2200mm of rainfall on an annual basis. Winters can be cold and wet with frosts. “Summers can be hot and humid with facial eczema and hogget ill thrift in the autumn,” said Ken. “Tolerance levels in the Romneys for facial eczema is sufficient to not have to take any other precautions - hopefully.” The couple operate the farm together, calling on the assistance of casual labour when required. Winter stock numbers generally number between 2100-2200 ewes, 750 ewe hoggets, 300 ram hoggets,
200 wether hoggets, and 40 mixed aged rams. Mixed aged ewes include a Poll Dorset flock of 380 ewes and just under 400 recorded Romney ewes. Almost 400 rising one and two-year-old bulls also run on the farm. The Haywood’s finished stock are usually sold through AFFCO. “We sold a lot of lambs store last year because of the drought and the increasing number of ram lambs we have to retain to meet our sale targets,” said Ken. The main challenge Ken and Rebecca face running the farm is the low profitability of sheep farming as they try to move the farm and the ram breeding enterprise forward. They find

Big city life
TO WWOOFING
IN WAIKATO by Denise Gunn
When Fiona Lam decided to take a break from the fast-paced city life of Hong Kong and venture to New Zealand as a WWOOFer (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms), she had limited experience of the rural sector. After spending close to two weeks each on six different farms, Fiona was introduced to a variety of farming lifestyles. Fiona said her interest towards agriculture and horticulture stemmed from childhood but living in a 700-square-foot apartment in Hong Kong with her family of five, didn’t allow much opportunity to further her knowledge. “We don’t even own a balcony thus can only keep some flowerpot plants and mini vegetables on a bay window and office desk,” said Fiona. She does however, help in her aunt’s small rented garden occasionally on weekends. During Fiona’s stay in New Zealand as a WWOOFer, she first worked around the Auckland region in
orchards, gardens and with alpacas, horses and aquaponics. She then spent a few weeks on a 25ha property in the Waikato, experiencing work with a range of livestock. The farm also has a noncommercial orchard and the owner is involved in small scale forestry. All of these properties provided Fiona with an assortment of tasks. The rural lifestyle was an enormous contrast to her life in Hong Kong and work as an interior design magazine editor. “All types of jobs were new to me,” said Fiona. “Some WWOOFers might grow up in rural areas and have more hands-on experience since childhood and that’s why they can pick up the work very fast.

Zealanders should consider themselves very blessed as they are living on some of the less populated land in the world so they can experiment a lot. “At least that’s what a girl from the most crowded place thinks.”
Rounding up cattle
“But I am obviously a city girl who sits in front of the office computer 10 hours a day and can be really slow and clumsy when it comes to outdoor farm work.” Fiona said her strong willpower helped and she tried her best to get things done and go the extra mile for her hosts. “I think to have the right WWOOFing attitude is sometimes more important than your physical ability or past experience.” During her stay in New Zealand, several of Fiona’s hosts took her to different places and pointed out native trees and birds. The fantail became her favourite New Zealand bird species. “I really enjoy watching them while working on
the fields. “They often flew around by my side while I was busily harrowing the soil.” A pair of chopsticks, made from native timber that Fiona crafted with the help of her Waikato host, remains a cherished memento of her stay. Fiona would like to return to New Zealand again as a WWOOFer and would consider the South Island as a contrast to her North Island visit. She has previously WWOOFed in Taiwan and is currently planning on WWOOFing in Germany next year. Rural life in New Zealand matched up with the pure image Fiona had envisioned before she travelled here as a WWOOFer. She was also impressed how her hosts all tried to be either partly or entirely self-sufficient.“New

Range, recharge times, speed (or lack thereof) and some wacky designs have combined to make early adoption of this enviro-friendly technology seem best suited to Hollywood A-listers — who happen to also have a Bentley in reserve for when the batteries run dry. But auto giant BMW have flipped the game on its head with the release of the i3, a neat, practical and thoroughly German interpretation of the e-car concept which is no mere four-door golf cart. The i3 ticks many of the right boxes by boasting a 0–60 time in the early sevens, 170 horsepower and a range of up to 140 kilometres on a single charge. The price, too, is less than many industry pundits guessed for a fully
fledged electric BMW — not a budget marque by any standard. At $30,000 less than the competing Tesla Volt in the US market, this is quite a coup. The best news is twofold — first, that the styling of the i3 is conservative by comparison to some predicted ‘future cars’ — less radical than the already accepted Smart ForFour, for example. Secondly, the range of the i3 can be boosted considerably with the addition of a tiny gasoline engine, feeding the battery like the diesel generator in a locomotive. Perhaps even more exciting is that the big brother of the i3 is lurking in the wings — the reputedly staggeringly hightech and thoroughly ultramodern i8. The future is here — though they still can’t fly, unfortunately.

Quad bike safety checks roll out
“Every year 850 people are injured on farms riding quad bikes, and five die throughout New Zealand,” says Francois Barton of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. “Quad bike deaths and serious harm injuries obviously have a huge impact on businesses, families and the wider community. If you can’t work, you can’t farm.” With the arrival of Spring and longer working hours, the chances of an accident on a quad bike rise significantly, and farmers, their families, and farm employees must keep quad bike safety high on their safety priorities list. The sobering message is brought home by frequent news reports featuring preventable fatalities, leading to inquests by coroners and heated debate among farmers, quad bike manufacturers and health and safety professionals. “We have been running a quad bike safety programme for the past two and a half years. Our inspectors have been making regular and on-going visits to farms throughout the country to ensure these machines are being operated safely,” says Mr Barton. “Farms are workplaces and farmers have a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of themselves and their staff.” Unfortunately, Waikato leads the nation in the number of deaths and serious harm notifications received by
the Ministry for the 2006-2012 period. For that period we were notified of six work-related quad bike fatalities, and 38 quad bike serious harm notifications for the Waikato region alone. Mr Barton said that farms continue to have one of the highest levels of injury of any workplace in New Zealand. Quad bikes are a major factor in this, but one that is easily preventable if these machines are respected and used correctly. This means proper training, the use of the right vehicle for the job, and an issue which still proves somewhat difficult to hammer home — the importance of wearing a helmet. “Most farming injuries happen on flat terrain, in fine and dry conditions. It’s very important not to get complacent when using a quad bike. Remember to keep your employees, your family members, and your own safety at front of mind,” says Mr Barton. The Ministry’s quad bike harm reduction campaign seeks to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities through improving quad bike safety on all farms. The campaign has four key safety steps: • Always wear a helmet • E nsure riders are trained and experienced
• Never let children ride adult quad bikes • Choose the right vehicle for the job — especially when towing a load or carrying passengers. The intention in promoting these four steps is that if quad bike riders on farms put these into practice,
QUAD BIKES CAN
KILL Don’t become a statistic.

riders will experience fewer accidents, and if accidents do occur, riders will experience less serious harm. Alongside recent developments in rollover crush prevention technology, the implementation of these measures is designed to prevent further tragedies of the kind which have destroyed families and livelihoods in the past.

The Korean automaker has enjoyed a renaissance over the past few years, with a clear vision of where they want to be and a stylistic direction which has made the brand instantly recognisable. Concepts such as the Soul and the Optima seem to have come direct from the motor shows of Detroit and Geneva
without the watering-down of design aesthetics seen in other brands, and that trend continues with the latest iteration of the Cerato family. The Kia Cerato has always been the manufacturer’s middle-of-the-road car — a comfortable, reliable and safe family motor, pitched at a demographic

who value fuel economy over flaring air intakes and turbo blow off valves. But this doesn’t mean that the Kia design team have failed to inject a little spark into the Cerato. After all, Mr Schreyer is the one who took the stolid, businesslike image of Audi and gave us the pop-icon TT. It’s clearly apparent in the lines of the brand new Cerato hatch — it’s a sleek and low-profiled machine, with a steeply raked front screen and the kinds of razor-sharp swoops and creases in its metal which would suggest a touch of the redline. Kia’s recent cars have always been sat on impressive alloys too and the Cerato hatch is no different. A defining feature of the Cerato four-door is sheer attention to detail — puddle lamps, door handle illumination, keyless entry and start, steering

Hail to the king of quads
by Andy Bryenton
Suzuki’s 500cc King Quad really lives up to its royal title when it comes to pulling its weight around the farm — and while you’re not likely to find many actual royal’s tackling the dirty jobs the rugged ATV with the regal sounding handle is definitely in a class of its own. Suzuki have long been famous for designing machines for real on-farm conditions, and the liquid cooled fuelinjected four stroke mill of the King Quad certainly delivers what farmers need — more power to take on the tough conditions of a Kiwi farm in winter, while still proving frugal on fuel. Independent front and rear suspension in a clever layout provide ample ground clearance, and the smooth hi-lo ratio box delivers that power in smooth, effortless chunks when you need it. Another big demand of the working farmer is space, and the King Quad has it by the truckload, with the ability to convert the versatile ATV for weed spraying, for carrying tools and fence posts, or of course for a perch for the trusty dog. In fact, the 500cc King delivers the kind of hauling power and punchy low end torque you’d expect from a much larger machine. Though more powerful engines are assuredly available across Suzuki’s range, it seems that the half-litre mark is a ‘sweet spot’ for New Zealand

Pureora Park proves a winner Just a pleasant drive from many North Island towns is a ‘jewel in the Kiwi crown,’ according to an expatriate Kiwi, who visited the Waikato’s Pureora Forest Park recently.
The 78,000-hectare park lies across the Hauhungaroa and Rangitoto ranges west of Lake Taupo and east of Te Kuiti. “After spending the last 10 years based in Hong Kong, my wife and I and our three kids were just blown away but what the park has to offer,” said banking executive. Fred Stolsenberg. “We visited the area several times on our annual leave and the kids particularly were thrilled by the mountain biking tracks, after being pretty much confined to very short trails up in Hong Kong’s New Territories’ area,” Pureora contains many kilometres of roads and tracks for riding as well as tramping, but as Mr Stolsenberg added — there are myriad activities. “And they are right on Waikato’s doorstep,” he said.
Among these activities are wealth of bird and wildlife photographic opportunities and for the more adventurous, who have a permits from the Department of Conservation, there’s hunting for deer, goats and wild pigs. On the birdwatching front, there are kaka, kakariki, kokako, and karearea along with kereru, tomtits, robins, tui, bellbirds, fantails, and wax-eyes. “There was a forest tower that was great for seeing birdlife,” says Mr Stolsenberg. A DoC spokesman adds that long tail and short tail bats can also be seen at dusk in some locations around the park. Child and family friendly activities include several sites handy to the Pureora Field Base, which are also wheelchair accessible.

Reward chance in the trees Forestry workers, hunters and the general public are being offered a reward of $300 for information leading to the live capture of an unwelcome avian visitor to our shores — a red-vented bulbul. Originally from Asia they threaten native birds and fruit and vegetable crops. They have an aggressive nature and are prolific breeders. Ministry of Primary Industries response manager, Brad Chandler, says there have been unconfirmed sightings at Walton in the Waikato. "We want to locate any birds out there so they can be successfully removed before a population can establish," he said The reward is being offered by the Department of Conser vation for reliable information leading to a live bird being captured by DOC or council staff. "People who believe they've seen or heard red-vented bulbuls in the Auckland and Waikato regions are asked to call our free Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline 0800 80 99 66 and provide the location. A photo would also be hugely useful," Mr Chandler says. "Payments will be made where reports directly result in a successful
capture within the one month reward time frame which runs from Thursday, October 10 to Sunday, November 10." Red-vented bulbuls are a medium-sized bird, around 20 centimetres long, about the size of a starling. They have a black head, a dark back, grey-white belly, and a distinctive crimson-red patch of feathers beneath their tail. The birds also have a distinctive call, unlike other birds heard in Waikato. This can be heard at: http://www.biosecurity. govt.nz/pests/red-vented-bulbul.

Seed drill history in focus As science unlocks the secrets of how plants and soil interact, technology turns this knowledge into practical tools for the farmer — and never has this been more apparent than in the manner in which many of our staple crops are now seeded. Where once farmers would follow the ploughman with a basket, literally ‘broadcasting’ seed (this is where the term for radio and television transmission comes from), these days a powerful seed drill takes up the task, equipped with computers to monitor seed spacing, depth and placement — sometimes even from space. The earliest seed drills come from 1500 BC, when Babylonian farmers used reeds to push seeds one by one into irrigated soil. The Chinese were using ox-drawn seed drills by 200 BC, allowing the mass
cultivation of rice and grains. Some historians believe that without the seed drill, China would never have become the large empire which it was at the time of Marco Polo. He, coincidentally, is credited as perhaps bringing the seed drill idea to medieval Italy. Nowadays the modern seed drill is a far cry from such primitive tools. Take for example the Vaderstad Seed Hawk 1300 — at over 25 metres wide and weighing 15 tons, this field-spanning monster uses GPS to precisely place every last seed, covering 61 hectares in a single load of its triple hopper. Its direct-drilling method is especially effective in areas with low soil moisture. Without this kind of technology, it may no longer even be possible to feed the 7 billion human beings who call Earth their home!

in a cave in northern Iraq which dates back to 10,000 BC. This was no wolf — tests prove that this animal was bred to possess a bigger brain, a shorter, wider jaw and smaller fangs — all traits of a farmer’s dog.
The town of Hunterville, in the foothills of the North Island’s Central Plateau, is known for its rugged scenery, its isolation — and the monument which graces its main street. It’s not a bronze statue of one of the town’s founding fathers, or a local lad risen to greatness, however. It’s a statue of the Kiwi farmer’s best friend — the Huntaway farm dog. There are estimated to be over 200,000 working dogs in New Zealand, making it possible since pioneering times for farmers to run large herds across our uniquely challenging terrain.
19
Dogs such as the Huntaway, the Blue Heeler (imported from Australia, but more than welcome here) and the iconic Border Collie (immortalised by comic artist Murray Ball) have helped shape rural New Zealand, in much the same way that dogs in general have helped shape the world. Archaeologists recently discovered the partial skeleton of a dog, buried
It’s no coincidence that at this time, human beings made the change from hunting and gathering to farming crops and raising livestock. Without the dog to help, we may have never put down our bows and spears in favour of the plough. Kiwi farmers take pride in the condition and training of their dogs, as evidenced by the continuing popularity of sheep trials at A & P shows across the nation. A good working team of dogs is still unsurpassed at mustering in hilly country, and despite the advancement of technology, it looks like the winning team of a farmer and his ‘best mates’ is here to stay.

Dairying ADVERTORIAL
Bridges prove kind to the environment and farmers pockets The tragic death of bee keeper Ken Richards when a bridge collapsed as he crossed it in his truck on a King Country farm in the early 1990s prompted farmers, at the time, to be more careful about their farm bridges. But as time has gone by, memories of the tragedy have faded and farm bridge maintenance has once again begun to fall by the wayside.
Nigel Miller, from Select Bridges, a Waikato-based civil construction company dedicated to bridge building, says, “Farmers should have their farm

“It is far more cost effective to inspect bridges regularly and make small repairs rather than be faced with significant remedial work or a total bridge rebuild due to insufficient ongoing bridge maintenance.” According to Miller, it is not unusual to see bridges in frequent use on farms which were built 40-50 years ago from railway iron or carriages, clearly these should be considered past their use-by date and certainly wouldn’t meet current OSH requirements. Their exposure to the elements over this extended period of time means structural weaknesses will no doubt have occurred increasing the risk of bridge collapse and potential injury to both livestock and staff. bridges inspected every couple of years to ensure wear and tear has not led to degradation of the structure over time.”
these instances, the construction of a new bridge is often recommended but by engaging specialist bridge builders it doesn’t necessarily have to come at a huge cost. Recently, an important set of national good management practice benchmarks has been agreed across the farming sector with the aim of lifting environmental performance on dairy farms. The ‘Sustainable Dairying: Water Accord’ from Dairy NZ recommends that all points where cows cross and return on a waterway, more than once per month, must be either bridged or culverted. Current targets for the Accord are that 100% of regular stock crossing points must be bridged or culverted by May 31, 2018. Most farmers agree that good farm infrastructure is important, high quality bridges and races ensure faster paddock to cowshed walk times which in turn equates to better productivity and cost efficiencies over time, in addition the investment in capital will also improve farm value.

Dairying HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING
Hoof Print with Fred Hoekstra
Good hoof trimming needs practice Last month we talked a bit about some of the things you as a farmer can do to minimise lameness on your farm. We looked at preventative hoof trimming. This month I would like to look a bit more at what you can do once the cow is lame. In reality this is often the only time a cow is being trimmed in New Zealand, so effectively most farmers are being the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff all the time when it comes to lame cows. Trimming lame cows is always reactive management and trimming cows only when lame doesn’t make good business sense, but you now have a lame cow and she needs to be treated. What do you do to help this animal? Obviously just looking at the hoof is not going to fix it so more is needed. Assuming that the cow is lame in her claw then by trimming her well we can usually help her tremendously. The principle of good hoof trimming is that we need to reduce the weight bearing of the sore claw and let the air get to it.
A cow is most commonly lame on her lateral claw because the lateral claw is often overloaded when the cow is walking or standing still on a hard surface (refer to last month’s article). So, in this case, we don’t just level the two claws to the same height, we actually trim the lateral claw thinner so more weight is transferred to the medial claw. The more weight we can get off the lateral claw the more rest this claw is going to get. Rest is one of the most common pieces of advice you hear from your doctor and it is also very effective for lame cows. Some people are worried about making the lateral claw thin. It feels like you make the cow even more tender when she has a sole thickness not much more than the thickness of a piece of paper. The thing is that we are reducing the weight on the claw with a thin sole.
If we make both claws thin we are possibly going to end up with a problem. However, cows are very resilient. Having thin soles is not necessarily a problem to them unless we make them walk long distances over rough tracks. If we have made the lateral claw thin and yet we don’t have a lot of height difference between the medial and lateral claw we can artificially raise the lateral claw by gluing a wooden block under the medial claw. The other thing we need to do is let the air get to the wound. We do this by opening up the wound. We trim away all loose horn so that live tissue
is exposed. Try not to make the claw bleed because it makes it a whole lot harder to see what you are doing and the healing process only takes longer. It all seems very easy when you read this. The principal is straightforward but putting it into effect requires a lot of practice and instruction.

Accessing free nitrogen
by John K Morris — Agrissentials
Nitrogen is essential for plant growth and when the first plants appeared on our planet 460 million years ago, the nitrogen necessary for plant growth was supplied directly out of the atmosphere, for free. That source of supply is still available today and is still free. Agrissentials’ customers just take it for granted. Incidentally, there is approximately 33,000 tonnes of nitrogen above every hectare of our planet. Agrissentials atmospheric nitrogen fixation programme is using this age old formula in conjunction with mycorrhizal fungi, rhizobium bacteria and the legume family to fix all the plant’s nitrogen requirements for free — no hassle, no application charges, no consultation fee and no detrimental impact on the environment — any environmental agent would be happy to hear that. In his book ‘The Closing Circle’ Doctor Barry Commoner, United States of America, characterised the nitrogen fertiliser industry in its hurtling dash for profits as one of the ‘cleverest business operations of all time’. Evidence exists that in the presence of artificial nitrogen (urea) the natural fixation of nitrogen from the air by soil micro-organisms stops and as a result, it is increasingly difficult for farmers to give up the use of the artificial product. Like addictive drugs, artificial nitrogen creates its own demand.
In a recent farm journal article, ‘vets are perplexed by cows becoming sick and dying because of phosphorus deficiency despite high levels in the soil. Apparently the answer lies in the levels of available calcium in the soil. Cows can only utilise phosphorus at half the rate of calcium ie 2 to 1 in favour of calcium. If calcium is low, the available phosphate for the animal is even lower, by half, even if phosphorus levels are higher the cows cannot utilise it without the calcium to go with it. In cold weather calcium uptake is naturally less. However, the real culprit is excessive applications of urea, especially autumn and winter and early spring. The excess nitrogen is converted to nitrate and leaches out of the soil as calcium nitrate leaving less calcium for plant uptake’ — so requiring another application of causmag. Here is a great rannygazoo example of the chemical treadmill.
The simple solution to the above scenario is to not use artificial nitrogen, instead get onto Agrissentials atmospheric nitrogen fixation programme — the way nature intended and fix and store all the nitrogen your plants need without putting your hands anywhere near your pockets. How good would that feel?
Cows can only utilise phosphorus at half the rate of calcium...
For a Rok Solid answer to all your other mineral requirements, go for a Rok Solid full spectrum, multi mineral, microbial rich fertiliser. This solid fertiliser covers all the essentials elements required for plant health plus a full array of microorganisms. These microbes are the management team for all soils — they convert all the minerals in our fertilisers to a plant available form and they won’t allow one mineral to lock up other minerals. They increase: the water
retention quality of the soil, the drainage capacity of the soil, the mineral quality, the carbon content, the worm population and the top soil depth. They detoxify the soil (they become dormant in cold weather or dry periods) but apart from that they work 24 hours per day, seven days a week — never ask for a pay rise, sick leave or holiday pay — they are your soil management team and what a great team they are to have in your soil! To find out more about Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers phone 0800 THE KEY that’s 0800 843 539 today for a FREE INFO PACK or you can contact your friendly representative Alec Robertson (Coromandel/North Waikato) on 027 522 2687, Fiona Hume (South/ West Waikato) 027 502 3036 and John McGrath (Bay of Plenty) 021 738 521 to find out how we can make your farm more successful.
