Federated Farmers dairy section chair Andrew Hoggard
“One of the aims of the industry’s 10-year strategy is to see 90 percent of dairy farm businesses having quality work environments by 2020,” said past DairyNZ chairman John Luxton. “We have put actions and commitments in this new plan to ensure we achieve that part of the strategy. We are competing with all the other career opportunities on offer across the globe. “We’re not always the most attractive choice for many young people these days and we need to be if we want to develop and retain the workforce we need.” The new Sustainable Dairying Workplace Action Plan sets out five areas of good people management including balanced and productive work time, fair remuneration and wellness, wellbeing and health and safety. One of the key expectations is that the industry will improve its record in health and safety, and that businesses will meet all legal and employment requirements. A dairy employee guide has been produced and measures are in place to track the industry’s progress against the plan. Federated Farmers dairy section chair Andrew Hoggard says
the quality of the work environment that a farmer provides is central to attracting and retaining staff. “Most dairy farm businesses have positive workplaces because farmers see the benefits for everyone if they can get and keep good staff. That is the reason why DairyNZ and Federated Farmers have worked together on this plan. “We recognise that level of best practice is not uniform across all businesses and that parts of our industry need to lift their performance to make dairy farming more attractive to a greater number of employees,” he says. “A good work environment does not stop with just doing the minimum. We’re encouraging farmers to go from good to great as employers, and supporting them with tips, tools and resources to make it easier. All farmers want to attract good staff — and so we’ve set out a clear road map for how to make that happen for them.” For a copy of the Sustainable Dairying Workplace Action Plan including the guides for dairy farms and dairy employees go to www.dairynz.co.nz/wap

Provisional figures for the 2014/15 dairy season, released at the DairyNZ Annual General Meeting in Morrinsville recently, show $2.4 billion worth of milk was produced in the Waikato. Guy, paid tribute to Mr Luxton, presenting him with a certificate in recognition of his contribution to the dairy industry. “Mr Luxton has been a rock for DairyNZ bringing great mana and leadership to the organisation. We are all very appreciative of what you have done for us,” said DairyNZ chief executive Tim Mackle. Three positions on the DairyNZ Board of Directors were also announced — with farmer-elected candidates Ben Allomes from Woodville, Michael Spaans from Te Aroha and Elaine Cook from Hamilton being voted in as directors. When the new DairyNZ board meets for the first time in November, one of its first tasks will be to elect a chair. In the meantime, the board will appoint an interim chair. A second election for the Directors’ Remuneration Committee saw David Gasquoine from Matamata, Chris Lewis from Pukeatua and Gerard Wolvers from Te Awamutu voted in. Mr Mackle said that DairyNZ had built a powerful base of more than $80 million worth of annual dairy research

This is $1.8 billion less than the previous 2013/14 season when the high milk price — $8.47 average dairy payout — boosted the Waikato region’s coffers by $4.2 billion. “The 2014/15 season’s low milk price had affected all farms, as owners and sharemilkers strrived to remain profitable,” said outgoing DairyNZ chairman John Luxton. “The value of milk production to the Waikato’s economy is huge — the region takes a big hit when farmers do.” The Waikato’s 4020 dairy herds produced 518 million kilograms of milk solids in 2014/15, contributing 27 percent of New Zealand’s total milk production. New Zealand’s dairy farmers across the country produced 1.9 billion kilograms of milk solids in 2014/15. Mr Luxton retired at the meeting after more than a decade of service to the industry body. He was farewelled in front of an audience of around more than 80 people, which included farmers and DairyNZ board and management. Minister for Primary Industries, Nathan

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES
by Ann Morgan
Born and bred in Matamata, Philip and Marlene Sherwood are high school sweethearts who have been together since they were 15 and 16-years-old. They have two sons Tommy who is two-and-a-half years old and Locky is nine months.
“W
e have been dairy farming for 16 years now,” said Philip who is now
30-years-old. “My mother passed away and she had this farm, so Marlene and I took over the running of it and have worked side by side ever since I was 17-years-old.” The farm of 60 hectares, originally milked 160 cows and was achieving 45,000 milk solids. Now they personally own the farm, and are milking 200 cows and have stepped it up, targeting 100,000 milk solids a year. They employ one manager who runs their winter milk farm. “We also own another property in Walton which we run
ourselves with 78 hectares and we milk 280 jersey cows. “We originally ran our home farm as managers. Then we went contract and sharemilking for two years. At one point we were holding down five jobs while we were young and able. “At our peak Marlene worked fulltime at Noble and Lee Accountants in town as well as our milking jobs. We were young and ambitious and we were pretty aggressive because our goal was to own a couple of dairy farms before we were 30. “We grow 20 hectares of maize on the winter milk farm, and feed a custom made mix. I try to keep things simple

Philip Sherwood has been farming since he was 15-years-old on the 60 hectare farm which was originally his mothers but high tech — ‘Simple Simon’ I say, so everyone knows what’s happening without being too complex, but it gets relatively intense when we need to be. Philip and Marlene believe the farming lifestyle is a great way to bring up their sons Tommy and Locky family since 1952, when his grandfather purchased it. “He set the farm up well and created a good system and it has a good food history. Doing the basics right first and foremost is vital, make sure you tick the boxes and grow from there. They converted their winter milk farm five years ago. “It was different back then, we were a small scale to switch and sharemilking at the time. Converting enabled us to retain our capital stock. I was told by others that we would only achieve it for two to three years and give it up, but as the years passed I liked it more and more. I had wanted to convert for 10 years, and finally changed because it made sense to us. “We were pushing through summers to dry cows off, and
I thought why didn’t we come through summer with dry cows to push them through winter. “It was about feed utilisation in my view, more than anything else, and it became utilisation of everything — stock, machinery, staff and sharing the load. When we were calving the winter herd in March it also helped us pay our dividends. The couple entered the 2008 Dairy Farmer Manager Awards and came runner up for the Waikato farm manager of the year. “We were up against a guy who had been doing it for eight years, so we felt pretty good,” said Philip. “Marlene has now started a sideline farm fuel rebates business and continues part-time with Noble and Lee

We love it here it’s great — we love what we do and are sticking to it. The day I don’t like milking cows, is the day I will stop doing it.”

Kiwi’s
saving kiwifruit by Ayla Miller Through perseverance and partnership, Waikato orchardist and businessman Richard Glenn and his team at Glenview Orchard have survived the ‘dark ages’ in the kiwifruit industry and are looking to the future.
P
seudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae, also known as Psa, is a bacteria that can result in the death of kiwifruit vines. When it first entered the country kiwifruit growers like Richard thought this was the end. During this time, Richard was asked to take on the role of Regional Controller for the Waikato. “We thought we were dead meat. It was a very tough time and every week it got worse. “I call it the dark ages — we were pretty brittle. For about two years no kiwifruit orchardist knew whether they were going to survive.” “Once we removed the 16A variety, the old gold kiwifruit as we call it, the spore levels dropped dramatically and
we saw the Hayward and the G3 were going to survive ok. All the growers in the meantime learnt management processes about how to control Psa.” Glenview Orchard is located on 32 hectares, some of which is grazed by Richard’s neighbour and friend Jim Grayling, with 16 hectares of orchard and a further 2.5 hectares planted in shelter. He and his wife Robyn have been growing kiwifruit since 1979 starting with two acres. “It was an interesting time because the government was pushing horticulture then,” he says. Coming from a sheep and cattle background, Richard and his father looked at going into dairy and
horticulture and after some deliberation decided to grow kiwifruit. He says this venture was quite rare in the early days but there were a small group of growers in the Waikato starting at the same time as him. “We grew the orchard to about four hectares by the mid 80’s and we then planted three hectares of apples.” They continued to grow the apple operation and when the kiwifruit industry hit the wall in 1987 they pulled out two hectares of vines and kept 13 hectares of apples. “Around 2000 we made a conscious decision to go back to kiwifruit based on the Plant Variety Right’s that Zespri owned.” PVR is similar to a patent and recognised internationally in most

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy
Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Harvesting in the cool shade of the kiwifruit vines markets. “Zespri is a co-op and has a very large breeding programme. We thought we would go back into kiwifruit. Apples were deregulated in 2000 so we lost the ‘single desk’ approach and the discipline that can come with that. We still had some good apples growing and we swung back to 50 percent apples by mid 2000’s and 50 percent kiwifruit.” The orchard currently grows Hayward, Sweet Green, Sun Gold and two hectares of apples which Richard plans to keep for another 18 months before replacing them with PVR varieties of kiwifruit. “We manage my father, Murray Glenn’s three hectare kiwifruit orchard as well and employ two permanent staff and up 16 during busy times, such as harvest and pruning. “We have a small nursery growing about 10,000 kiwifruit plants for sale in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. He says despite the hardships felt by the

industry there were some positives that came out the arrival of Psa. “We learnt that we have a very good network. It made everyone sit down and discuss things and we managed to get all the growers, packhouses and Zespri under one banner. “That gave us a shot at effectively defeating what we were up against. As growers, typical kiwis, we got in there and did something.” Richard believes the industry has bounced back. “It is an example of what you can achieve when you work together. “We don’t just sit on our laurels, the rest of the world is catching up with taste and improving, and we are raising the bar. Richard has a keen interest in new varieties and regularly goes to field days in the Bay of Plenty. “Currently, and going forward, the industry is really exciting because of the

new varieties that are there now and the ones that are going to be there in the next two to five years. I’m hoping that in five or six years Zespri will have a gold, red, and a new green fleshed type.” As well as looking after the management side of his business he is not afraid to get his hands dirty. “I enjoy getting hands-on stuff done. I do the bulk of the spraying and mowing and in doing that I get to see my orchard. “Over the next five years we will continue to aim for that 18 hectares and establish new varieties. I think the key to continued success on the orchard is doing things on time and having a good work life balance.”

FOLLOWING THE PATH TO FARMING BY AYLA MILLER
The road to farming doesn’t always run smooth and Ryan Orchard knows this first hand. Since leaving school he has dabbled in architecture, apple picking, bank work, building, radio and managed to fit in fairly extensive travel abroad. On top of all that, he is a keen musician and singer/songwriter and now manages Landcorp’s Earnslaw dairy farm in the Waikato.
A
fter a while working on his mother’s farm he and his wife Sarah took off on a world tour after their wedding in 2013. On their return, they found Ryan’s mother and partner had managed well without them, and decided to apply for other farming jobs around the country. “Whilst we were away we decided we had achieved everything we could there. I had done lots of record seasons so I thought we might as well leave them to it. “When we got back we applied for a lot of jobs and were offered five around the North Island.” Finally they found their way to Earnslaw, a 339 hectare dairy farm milking 930 cows.
“The real appeal was that this was a brand new farm. Being involved in getting the farm off the ground is what it came down to. “It’s been really exciting and a big challenge. They have a development team here that essentially build the farm. I came in with brand new cows that had never been milked, a new shed, a new team that I’d never met. No one knew where all the paddocks were, everyone was flying blind. When I was offered the job, I hadn’t even seen the farm and the only time I did come over to see it, it was so foggy I couldn’t see past the end of the race. Ryan has been manager of Earnslaw for 15 months now and says he and his wife Sarah had been looking for a new Ryan believes his prior experience in different industries has given him many transferrable skills to manage the farm

Ryan and Sarah Orchard were looking for a new challenge when the jobs came up at Landcorp’s Earnslaw dairy farm
challenge and they certainly got that. Sarah is now head calf rearer on the farm and has also had a big change in career, having previously run the Real Tart Gallery in New Plymouth. “The hardest part was trying to get all the systems in place and trying to lead the guys when I didn’t really know the farm myself, and I didn’t know the area. So it was a fairly steep learning curve,” Ryan says. “I’d always liked outdoor work even when I was younger so that was a big appeal. “I found that the other jobs I had, after a few weeks I pretty much knew what I was doing and you just end up doing the same thing. “With farming you never know what’s going to happen. Dealing with animals and weather are two pretty big variables. On top of that — staff, and you’ve got the payout going up and down. “When we came here we were wondering if we were tired of farming but
moving to a new area and meeting new people sort of fired up our enthusiasm. There is totally different soil types and conditions which has increased my knowledge in farming and kept us interested.” He says his favourite part about being a farm manager is growing his staff. “I enjoy trying to get the best out of people and obviously the animals and the grass. “I have a pretty strong theory of ‘work hard play hard’ and I think we have a good balance. We work hard but we don’t take ourselves too seriously. “Apart from that I enjoy thinking outside the square, trying to challenge myself, achieving goals, and trying to get more out of the land without spending more money. “Everything that came before farming has aided me to become a good manager. Well maybe it depends who you ask, but I feel like the travel has helped me deal with different people

from all walks of life. Working in different environments has also helped. The people I worked with in the bank were very different to the people I worked with on the building site. “I’m a pretty big believer that if you’re not enjoying something there is not much point in hanging around doing it for your sake or the boss’ sake. Life’s too short to be doing something you hate every day and I’m certainly not about the money. We spend more of our life working than doing anything else so you want to be enjoying it.”
These scholarships are available to support: • Study Fees •Accommodation • Travel • Living Expenses

ADVERTORIAL
Working with nature by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials
A study of 50 year old United States Department of Agriculture data has disclosed that minerals in 43 different vegetables and fruits, compared to those that were eaten in 1999, found significant decreases in protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2) and vitamin C. According to Scientific American, subsequent studies have found a Kushi Institute analysis from 1975 to 1997 showing that average calcium levels in 12 varieties of fresh vegetables dropped 27%; vitamin A 21%, iron 37% and vitamin C 30%. A British study covering 1930 to 1980 found that the average calcium content of 20 vegetables had declined by 19%, with 14% less potassium and 22% less iron. Yet another study concluded that “one would have to eat eight oranges today, to derive the same amount of vitamin A as our grandparents would have derived from just one orange”. In 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit it was stated that there is deep concern over continuing major declines in the mineral values in farm and top soils throughout the world, showing mineral levels in the world’s soil falling by 85% in the USA, 76% in Asia and 72% in Europe. Such is the level of annual soil depletion that
British farm soils have only 100 harvests left in them. Added to this, not only are the minerals in our soils declining, but toxic additives to the soil are creating unwanted side-effects (Russell, James. 2015, August 31. What Lies Beneath? Does mineral deficient soil grow nutrientpoor food? Element. p10). According to Dr Morgan Wiliam’s report to the government in 2004, NZ loses between 200 — 300 million tonnes of topsoil every year, to the ocean. However if you are using Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers the live microbial soil and deep root system will keep your topsoil on the farm. Agrissentials was formed in 1995 to manufacture and market BioGro certified, multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers; remineralising soils and building humus (carbon) in the soil; to rebuild and regenerate topsoil; thus ensuring sustainable farming and an eco-friendly environment. Agrissentials have forged
the way to accommodate the consumer call for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food since 1992 and this call for healthy food is increasing in demand every day. This is the market that New Zealand should be targeting; top quality produce for top quality returns. While we continue in the commodity markets we will always be struggling to keep ourselves above the breadline. Chemical production, chemical sprays, herbicides, drenches, antibiotics and toxic rescue remedies will only hold us back from lucrative markets. We desperately need to change our course back onto the natural track, working with Mother Nature rather than against her. With all the money spent on trying to eradicate pest and disease the only thing that has happened is that pest and disease have become immune to the toxic sprays — what does that tell you? Perhaps pest and disease are part and parcel of the ecosystem and part of Mother Nature’s plan to keep the system operating. If a plant becomes sick or out of balance, pest and disease will take it out, so that it doesn’t propagate on and weaken the species. Here, at Agrissentials we have developed a new
product called ET 250 which is designed to repel pest and disease. If pest and disease are there for a purpose there’s no point in annihilating them. Just repel them from your property! The ultimate move is to build up the mineral content in your plant, pasture or animals, ensuring a good strong immune system which will naturally protect life, without the need to spray or drench. Agrissentials specialise in multi-mineral microbial rich fertilisers for better health and vitality, however, if you are having trouble with pest and disease talk to us about our ET 250 repellent. It will rescue the situation until immunity sets in. Go natural, start a new relationship with your production unit today and reap the benefits from working in harmony with nature. Revolutionary wastewater systems Waterflow NZ Ltd design revolutionary, environmentally savvy wastewater processing systems that have several key benefits for their owners. The treatment processes are completely natural and power-free, with just a small irrigation pump installed if on a flat site and no power needed on a sloping site. Maintenance costs are slashed by 75 percent on average compared to other wastewater systems. They are extremely cost-effective because there’s virtually nothing to be done once they’re installed. The biological processes that break down the waste mimic nature’s processes so it just makes sense every way you look at it. Waterflow New Zealand Ltd undertook extensive research into how systems in nature effectively reduce solids by up to 95 percent using vermiculture and biological processes. Nothing man-made can replicate this efficiency in a sustainable, ecofriendly way, so Waterflow went about designing their natural flow system based on utilising what happens in nature. The processes are cleverly simple. Black-water -toilets and kitchen sink- and greywater -from showers, baths, basins and the laundry- are separated from the very start. Treatment of the black-water starts in
a purpose-designed unit known as the WORMORATOR where the liquid portion is directed onto a bed of bark specially designed to filter the liquid through while retaining the maximum amount of solids which are then seeded with nature’s own septic disposal wonders ‘Tiger Worms’ who go about their business ingesting and breaking down the solids into watersoluble nutrients. A series of natural filtration mediums further purify and treat the wastewater and nutrients to extremely high levels of clarity ready to be introduced into the soil. The end product is a resource that is fed back into the soil just the same way the ecosystems of the forest floor turn rotting matter into rich, fertile substances. We’ve installed over 400 systems throughout New Zealand and demand is increasing. The larger volume greywater is treated through a simple but highly effective regime involving a series of natural settling and filtering processes that significantly reduce scum. NaturalFlow Systems are ideal for rural residential situations but they have also become widely used in rural schools and on Marae’s, replacing the old worn-out systems of the past. Not resting on its laurels, the company
is continually looking at new ways to improve performance through design technology, and from its base in Maungaturoto new and exciting advances are pending. Waterflow is pleased that consenting agencies such as councils are quickly understanding and seeing the benefits that come from using the all-natural approach to disposing of waste.
To learn more about what makes NaturalFlow a sound wastewater disposal system contact one of the team. The company’s web-site is crammed full of easily digested information too. Choosing the right fencer
ADVERTORIAL
Wet boots and inspiration
Property is your biggest asset so protecting it is high on the priority list for any owner. Fencing the section is the first step to ensuring this and starts with choosing someone you trust to do the work.
What started out as a thought in the mid 1980s, while possum trapping and meat hunting, later grew into a business. Tony Morris, director of BeeSeal Ltd, was a keen hunter and walked many kilometress in boots that were not only wet but in need of something to waterproof and care for the leather. “The boots stretched after becoming too soft and broke apart at the stitching, sort of rotting off your feet as you walked,” he said. “I then began experimenting with beeswax, trying a number of different additives before finally hitting on the perfect combination, which to this day is a secret.” He gave some to his mates, fellow hunters and farmers, to try on boots and saddles initially, but then as time went along many other uses for BeeSeal became apparent. From leather shoes, boots and saddlery the preparation was used on wooden furniture, leather upholstery, cracked horse hooves and even as a repair balm for cracked or workworn hands. Tony and his family began manufacturing and marketing BeeSeal 26 years ago, mainly at Fieldays and trade shows. Nowadays it is mainly sold through website marketing. So what started out as BeeSeal
for Leather changed into BeeSeal Multipurpose Beeswax. “Every home or office should have a can of BeeSeal,” says the inventor.
With any project involving money and time it is essential to research contractors before meeting with them. Before you start looking, decide what your budget is and talk with friends and family about who they would recommend. Ask them who did a good job and if they stayed within their estimated quote. When contacting the contractor’s office, take note of whether their company sounds professional over the phone. If they are this is more likely to carry over to their work. Ensure the company has an existing address to avoid any fly-by-night services which will leave you with a hole in your pocket and a half-finished project. On the first meeting with the contractor do not make any snap decisions and do not give in to any financial pressures to hand over payment immediately. Watch out for contractors who require cash only payments. Request a written estimate for the service and if they deny you this take this as a serious red flag. Ask as many questions as you need to get the full picture of the service that will provide you. Find out what materials they will be using and ask about their procedures. Get the contractors to give you an estimated time frame for the work to be completed in and find out if or what their warranty is on the work they do. Have a clear idea in your mind where
Choosing the right fencing contractor is essential when protecting your property
you want the fence to run and whether or not different forms of fencing will be required. Find out who is in charge of the overall project before work begins and talk to this person After you have chosen a contractor and the work progresses, check when the estimated completion date is and whether there are discounts for any delays or failures to reach goals. Also establish how the contractor receives payment as some prefer payment up front and others accept it upon completion.
Are your boots up to scratch? A good treatment of BeeSeal will restore them! BeaSeal, the multi purpose bee wax cream. SHOES • BOOTS • BAGS • JACKETS • SADDLERY • LEATHER LOUNGE SUITES • CAR SEATS • WOODEN FURNITURE • INDOOR/OUTDOOR

Farm owners’ and managers’ responsibilities extend to the health and safety of everyone who works on the farm — full time, part time, casual employees, contractors and their employees, subcontractors and consultants. Worksafe NZ has laid down guidelines for both principal and contractor. Rural Contractors NZ president, Steve Levet says such things as forecast drought and the lower forecast milk price could see some farmers under huge pressure. “However, there are things on farm that have to be done — no matter what — such as supplementary feed and crop harvesting. “Contractors are professionals and are especially set up to help out when these jobs need to be done on the farm.” Rural Contractors is the only national association and the leading advocate for rural contractors in the country and while accrediting members
to provide assurance to farmers of the qualifications and reliability of its members, the organisation also monitors central and local government policies, plans and proposals on behalf of its membership. It also maintains close relations with a wide number of organisations, government
departments and other national bodies. Another reason for farmers to source RCNZ members is the fact that the association supports and promotes training and education in the industry. Members can sit for four national certificates which are registered with the NZ Qualifications Authority.

CONTRACTORS A new generation of professionals by Andy Bryenton
It’s a job which many kids profess to desire — the ability to drive those huge machines which shape the soil and make the foundations for our homes and industries. It’s a growing industry which requires a high level of skill. In the year to march 2015 the number of trained heavy excavator and Tracks, Wheels and Rollers certed drivers rose to an unprecedented 7800 nationwide, with no sign of slackening growth. Of course the massive Christchurch rebuild is part of this figure, but roading and the needs of rural New Zealand make up a huge part of this figure as well. That’s no surprise — increasingly, the farming sector requires big projects to meet the needs of more intensive agriculture. Young recruits coming up in the trade must initially earn their heavy vehicle licences, grades 2 to 5 depending on the vehicles they wish to command. An additional Tracks, Wheels and Rollers certification is also required. And that’s before facing the

array of hydraulic controls which allow a seasoned excavator operator to move his machine’s massive boom with surgical precision. To then go on to achieve the required Certificate in Civil Plant Operation level 3 (or the alternative cert to level 3 specialising in bulk earthmoving), those fresh out of high school must have a minimum NCEA english and maths level 2. Canterbury and Auckland are the leading areas demanding more skilled operators, so this is a smart career path for those who have sharp eyes, deft hands and mental stamina. Technology moves at a fast pace, and jobs which were once the preserve of the hammer and shovel now fall to skilled professionals whose mighty machines can do the work in a single scoop!

Silver Fern Farms and Shanghai Maling
The Board of Silver Fern Farms have announced that a strong majority - 82.22 per cent of votes had been cast in favour of the 50/50 Partnership proposal with China’s leading meat processor Shanghai Maling, a listed company based in Shanghai, owned 38 per cent by Bright Food Group. “Shareholders throughout the country have shown enthusiastic support for the Shanghai Maling proposal since its announcement, with many calling this ‘the breakthrough initiative’ the business had been seeking in recent years,” said Chairman of Silver Fern Farms, Rob Hewett. “This is a very exciting day for Silver Fern Farms. The board believes this partnership will be a defining moment
for our business, the co-operative as a whole, and our supplying farmers. It is gratifying shareholders agreed. “We have a partner in Shanghai Maling who will invest $261 million in cash for a 50 per cent share of Silver Fern Farms’ business, in partnership with the existing Silver Fern Farms Co-operative. The investment will provide significant financial capability to accelerate our global ‘Plate to Pasture’ strategy.

ORAL CANCER TEST FREE AT THE OLD VILLA DENTAL LTD With approximately 643,000 worldwide cases reported annually, new cases identified each day and an annual increase of 11% each year, it might surprise you to know that the fastest increase is shown by 20 to 30 year olds. Oral Cancer is linked to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which almost killed actor Michael Douglas. SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS FOR ORAL CANCER INCLUDE: • Swelling of the jaw • A sore in your mouth that bleeds and won’t heal • A lump in your cheek that can be felt with your tongue • Soreness or feeling that something may be caught in your throat • Difficulty moving your jaw • Difficulty chewing or swallowing • Any numbness of the tongue or areas of the mouth • Ear pain • Hoarseness, chronic sore throat, or change in voice • Loose teeth
At the Old Villa Dental we have one of the least invasive and effective aids in the early detection of Oral Cancer using the VELscope, which makes use of fluorescence visualisation. In fact, a VELscope exam can be performed during a routine dental or hygiene exam in about two minutes. Be sure to have an oral cancer assessment at regular intervals to ensure that this potentially disfiguring and deadly disease does not catch you unaware. “In addition, with the extensive retail and distribution assets of Shanghai Maling and the broader Bright Food Group in China, we will have a unique opportunity to cestablish Silver Fern Farms as the premium red meat brand in what is the world’s fastest growing protein market. “The new partnership will allow us to invest in the things we want to, not just the things we need to, which has been the position in recent times. The investment will see Silver Fern Farms have no debt and a positive cash position at next year’s end. “Shareholders clearly understand, and appreciate, the magnitude of the opportunity in front of us. Growth in our ‘Plate to Pasture’ strategy will generate higher returns over time for shareholders and suppliers in these programmes. “With higher returns and lower debt we expect to be able to share profits via regular payments of dividends to the two shareholders and maintain competitive procurement prices for our livestock suppliers. “The Co-operative will receive 50 per cent of those future dividends and intends, subject to the Co-operative Board approval at the time, to in turn provide regular payments of dividends and rebates to shareholders,” said Mr Hewett. Dean Hamilton, Chief Executive of Silver Fern Farms said Shanghai Maling brings more than just capital because they provide the company with a huge opportunity in China. “Shanghai Maling’s integrated supply chain model will allow us to advance our product development and consumer marketing abilities in China in ways we could not do ourselves, or with any other local or international investor. “This is a genuine game changing opportunity for our business, and I’m delighted the Co-operative shareholders are excited about the opportunity. We have a partner who supports and wants to accelerate our global strategy.

“Shanghai Maling has the resources and relationships to help us specifically in China, and will invest significant capital to put us in a position of not only financial sustainability, but one of strength. The end result should be higher with more stable returns from the ‘Plate to Pasture’,” he said. The next steps involve Shanghai Maling shareholders approving the partnership on Monday, October 30. Bright Food Group — 38 per cent shareholder in Shanghai Maling has already stated it will vote in favour. Obtaining regulatory approvals from both New Zealand and Chinese authorities. This process is expected to take several months — the transaction is expected to come into effect between March and June 2016. A separate resolution, led by Messrs Richardson and Cochrane, which sought shareholder support to require the board to undertake and provide an analysis of a merger with Alliance Group, was voted down by 76.01 per cent of shares cast.

BATTERY ADDITIVE
ADVERTORIAL
Farmer amazed at battery Life Lead acid batteries usually die prematurely from sulphation build-up on internal lead plates. According to Gerard Anselmi of RECHARGE Battery Revitalizer and Conditioner, sulphation is very easy to treat and prevent premature battery failure with their simple Recharge Battery Conditioning Program. “We have been saying for years that farmers are getting eight to ten years battery life using our battery conditioning program. These days we meet people using our RECHARGE Battery Conditioning Program with 12 and 14-year-old batteries often still going,” says Gerard. “Last year we had three farmers with 17-year-old batteries still going strong. The last one was a Canterbury farmer at the Christchurch A and P show — he was very pleased with the results. “After 17 years on the market in New Zealand and 11 years in Australia I would not be surprised if we bettered that figure given time.” A RECHARGE treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid electrolyte holding electrons. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation build-up process, one chemical reaction to counter another,” says Gerard. “Once treated, a battery is essentially running at full capacity, provided the lead plates are still in good condition and prevention is the key. “Treat them early, repeat every two to three years and keep them charged. Yes you can treat sealed batteries simply by drilling into each cell treating and resealing with silicone, sika-flex or a plastic bung. Recharge
Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner A lot of people in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem, A car battery can be treated for around $5.

RURAL WHEELS
Evolution of the originator by Andy Bryenton
Suzuki’s off-road pedigree may bring to mind motocross mud-slingers and hard working quad bikes. But peel back the surface and you’ll also find that the Japanese auto maker has also been at the forefront of sports utility technology on four full-sized wheels, producing some tough machines which have stood the test of time. Now, with their new Grand Vitara claiming a place in the compact SUV market which Suzuki had a hand in creating — Willy’s jeep aside — the obvious comparison will come not between this new offering and other, pricier contenders such as the Discovery Sport and the X3, but with the Suzuki bloodline 27 years in the making, featuring machines like the Samurai and Escudo which are still out there today as competitive off-road mud racers, complete with winches and monster tyres. That off-road competence is what put Suzuki ahead, and it would be a shame if it was compromised for style over substance. The good news for fans of the old Escudo and Vitara is that, while it has been styled to look right at home outside a trendy cafe in Auckland, the four-wheel drive versions of the Grand Vitara lose none of their terraincrushing DNA. If anything, refining those underpinnings by making them easier to control — a four-way dial now allows mode selection, including locking diffs
and has made the rugged little SUV feel more effortlessly in control when the tarmac is left behind. The nigh on sacrilegious fact that two-wheel drive editions of the Grand Vitara exist must be addressed — though purists must admit that the compact SUV is taking over from the large sedan in town, making this an option for those who admit to themselves that their stylish new machine will never see a boggy field, except as far-off scenery. For those who want the full ‘steak and chips’ grunt of the old Suzuki off-road range, the one to pick is certainly the AWD LTD spec. It even comes with that most Vitara-like of features, a willing little four-cylinder 1600cc engine that performs, like that in the old Escudo, far beyond what one would expect from a sub-2litre mill. So, behind the slick new image and the practical nature of the Grand Vitara

Six packed with potential by Andy Bryenton
In the world of off-road vehicles, there’s always room for more innovation. Adding more power can only push a machine so far in terms of practicality, before it gets claimed by the hardcore, dune-busting gearheads at the sports end of the spectrum. Adding utility, however — that’s another story. Yamaha managed to find a way to shoehorn in a little extra practicality when they released their three-seater Viking UTV a few years back. With the appeal of a helmet-free ‘cage’ for farm work, a big load tray and seating for three burly blokes (or two and the dog), the Viking stood out with a point of difference to its rivals. After all, many hands make light work. Three seats also meant that hunters and anglers could bring a whole party, not just have to choose one of their mates and leave the rest cold. Now, some other UTV manufacturers have built extended frame versions of their machines already, offering four seats to play with. Some have even added a bit more pep to the power plant to handle the extra weight. But when Yamaha brought out the Viking VI (as in a Roman six, to mix your ancient cultures), they did more than just create a stretched off-road limo. The engineering process involved was far more complicated than simply ‘cut, weld, bolt on seats, have a drink to celebrate’. While the Viking VI uses the same 686cc single overhead cam motor as its three seat counterpart, there is no lack of get up and go. The
longer wheelbase would mean a hard time turning on a machine without power steering, but the Viking’s assisted system makes the wheel feel precise, even at low speeds. Locking diffs and ample torque mean that, despite its size the Viking handles obstacles well, and don’t let the space between the wheels fool you — it won’t bottom out like a passenger car, even with six on board. The passenger has come first here, with a completely redesigned roll cage for safety, plenty of room on every seat to avoid the ‘not in the middle’ arguments we remember from dad’s Valiant, and a comfortable ride thanks to model-specific Maxxis tyres, built just to handle the extra weight. Most importantly for summer, the Viking VI has a total of eight cup holders — just the ticket when you’ve got six people to the job site or the camp site. While many people need a UTV as a bigger brother to the old trusty quad, those who really want a go-anywhere alternative to the ute should definitely take a look at this voluminous, trail-ready Yamaha. After all, more seating can easily become more storage — look at the double cab utes on the road as an example!

Special resolution Farmers of New Zealand supports highly respected dairy leader and former Fonterra Director Greg Gent in sponsoring a special resolution to change the constitution of Fonterra reducing the size of the current board from thirteen to nine by 31 March 2016. This proposed Notice of Motion is up for discussion and resolution at the annual meeting of shareholders of Fonterra Cooperative Group Limited scheduled to be held on 25 November 2015. The reported response by Fonterra Chairman John Wilson hitting back with, “We need to have a constructive and genuine consultation within the shareholder base, not have imposed a solution by two of our farmers on the back of an envelope”, demonstrates the typical father and mother stance that, we know best and we just can’t have an idea like this coming from out of the blue and not in our control. Chairman Wilson should not be so disrespectful or dismissive of Greg Gent. Greg is a director of a number of high profile New Zealand companies, an ex-chairman of the Northland and Kiwi Dairy Companies and played an
integral part in the setting up of the Fonterra structure, which was not easy. The Gent proposition seeks shareholder support to reduce the size of the board and achieve a leaner and fitter Fonterra, making the Fonterra Cooperative more globally competitive and successful. As supplying shareholders our businesses and livelihoods depend on that. What Chairman Wilson proposes as an alternative is that they simply knock up a few options in a discussion document that they like or can live with and then undertake consultation with shareholders which will guarantee that board members and the shareholders council end their preferred solution. It is called self-preservation. Remember the board has a number of ex-shareholder council members and the council itself has no doubt many aspiring directors currently in its ranks.
Visit our updated website where you are now able to list your own stock, add photos and profiles for both For Sale and Wanted to Buy.
Chairman John Wilson’s criticism of this resolution is in fact contrary to what the board previously promised. The chairman fails to disclose in his media release that the board’s stated position in the 2012 notice of meeting assured suppliers that the board and Fonterra’s Council had initiated a review to consider development of Fonterra’s governance and representation to meet the challenges of the coming decade. Over the last three years John Wilson and his board have not produced any review options to shareholders and therefore not met their obligations to shareholders. Shareholders must question why highly respected ex-directors are taking this action. They also must ask themselves why high profile independent directors are choosing to stand down from the board. Such behaviour may be symptomatic of potential issues of concern around the board table. The proposal to reduce the number of directors does not target any directors on the current board. The process has been designed to make sure that shareholders retain the absolute power to elect the candidates they regard as the best candidates for the job. The NZ Institute of Directors in publishing The Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice for New Zealand Directors, states that a board composition is a direct contributor to board performance, achieving a balance of skills and experience on the board is a key goal. Diversity on a board is vital but should always be approached through the lens of demonstrated competence. Farmers of New Zealand believes that both the size of the board and the current mix

of expertise around the board needs urgent consideration. We do not believe the current composition is even close to being appropriate to govern a large global processor and marketer of food products. It is also important to understand that after a certain period time a board can become comfortable with one another. While this can be a sign of seamless operations, it can also be an early sign of complacency. Recruiting new board members is an important way to introduce new thought and perspective to board debates while avoiding groupthink and related risks. Succession planning is inexorably linked to board composition. The NZ Institute of Directors makes the point that the interests of shareholders will be best served if its board acts with maximum efficiency and effectiveness. A Board that is too large may not give its members the opportunity of participating in discussions and decisions to the best of their ability. We believe thirteen directors is far too many. The notice of motion is timely and well considered. If this action had not occurred what we believe to be a critical debate would not be taking place. We thank Greg Gent’s and Colin Armer’s courage of conviction and professionalism bringing this issue to shareholders. It is timely to remind Fonterra’s Chairman John Wilson, the board, and the shareholder council not to underestimate the intelligence of Fonterra’s shareholder suppliers, to consider and form their own opinion regarding this very important notice of motion to downsize Fonterra’s board.

Welcoming TPP conclusion
NATURAL SPREADERS
Beef and Lamb New Zealand (BLNZ) and the Meat Industry Association (MIA) are delighted by the successful conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, as announced by Trade Minister Tim Groser and his TPP counterparts on October 6 in Atlanta. “We’re confident that New Zealand’s negotiators have secured the best possible deal for Kiwi sheep and beef farmers,” says BLNZ Chairman James Parsons. “The TPP will have a significant impact on the competitiveness of our exports in TPP markets.” The sheep and beef sector’s exports to TPP countries were worth more than $2.4 billion in 2014, nearly one-third of the sector’s total exports. That trade incurred about $94 million in tariffs last year. “New Zealand doesn’t currently have Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with Japan, the US, Canada, Mexico or Peru. This deal is particularly important for us in relation to those markets, some of which currently charge very high tariffs on our exports but are highly valuable to the sector,” said MIA Chairman Bill Falconer. “The TPP will also open the door to addressing some complex and costly non-tariff barriers.” New Zealand’s FTAs saved $161 million in tariffs on the sheep and beef sector’s global exports last year, and the conclusion of the TPP means that

A white line debate
I was reading a recent article about a farmer who has overcome their lameness issues. In the article it is explained how white line disease is caused by long distance walking.

“The sole wears thin and when there is pressure applied to the herd little stones will work their way into the hoof and cause infections.” This article again shows me how there are still people out there with a wrong understanding of what causes white line disease and most lameness issues in New Zealand. For one, this theory has no evidence to back it up, two, it doesn’t make sense if you think about it and thirdly there is evidence to show this theory to be incorrect. In a previous article I asked people to show me some indisputable evidence to prove the possibility of this theory. I received some responses but no real evidence was presented. I won’t go into that now but I will on the other two points. One, the theory explained above doesn’t make sense. When cows walk long distances their hooves will wear faster — that is logical, natural, and if the live tissue in the hoof didn’t respond to that faster wear then the cow would end up with major problems. As a matter of fact, the whole herd would end up with worn out hooves and you would not be able to milk cows on big farms. You would need to keep the cows in their paddock because any unnatural wear
on a track will cause a problem with worn out hooves. Fortunately, cows are created with the ability to adapt just like other creatures. Just look at your own hands. If you do more physical work with your hands your body responds to that by growing more calluses. In the same way, the corium (live tissue in the claw) will respond to more wear by growing more hoof — especially when they have been walking on the tracks for months. However, sometimes we go to farms and all the hooves are soft and thin. This is true, and the question needs to be asked why is that? Why does the corium sometimes not respond in a sustainable manner? The only explanation I can come up with is that the corium is not functioning properly due to being unhealthy or maybe the thinner soles are not a problem to the cow. To answer the question on what makes the corium unhealthy is a whole article or articles on its own. If you want to know more you can attend one of our trimming courses and/or seminars to find out.

Second, I also want to show you some evidence of the opposite to be true. Do you notice that white line disease happens more on the outer claw — especially when there is more height difference between the claws? So, white line disease actually occurs more often with a thicker sole rather than a thinner sole. We did a trimming trial a few years ago where we showed that if you trim the outer claw to the same height as the inner claw you end up with less lameness. So, by trimming the outer claw you make it thinner and yet you end up with less lameness. This goes against the theory that was described in the article that I was referring to. I realise that there is a lot more to the white line disease which I intend on covering in my next article.

Dairy Industry Awards open Entries are open for the 2016 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards, and organisers kicked-off with an on-farm event which was aimed at educating, informing and fuelling people’s interest in entering one of the awards competitions. “There have been significant changes to the awards’ competitions for the 2016 programme — including new names and stricter entry criteria — so the launch events provide an opportunity to understand what those changes are and which contest people are eligible to enter,” said NZ Dairy Industry Awards general manager Chris Keeping. She says the key changes to this year’s contests are: The Share Farmer of the Year competition — previously known as the Sharemilker/ Equity Farmer of the Year, is open to all self-employed farmers largely responsible for the day-to-day running of the farm, such as sharemilkers, contract milkers, leasees and equity farm managers. The Dairy Manager of the Year — was Farm Manager of the Year — is open to all salaried farm workers like farm managers, herd managers, production managers and others. The criteria in the Dairy Trainee of the Year contest has been changed so that only those aged between 18 to 25-years-old with up to three years’ full-time experience on a dairy farm and the equivalent of up to a level four qualification can enter. “The changes to this year’s competitions aim to enable more people to enter and to make the competitions fairer for those that do enter.”
