“The organisation thanked Dr Jan Wright for her leadership and hard work over the last decade and wished her replacement Simon Upton every success as he takes up the reins this week,” said Federated Farmers’ environment spokesperson Chris Allen. “Farmers didn’t always see eye to eye with Dr Wright or her recommendations but on a number of topics we were on the same page, and we certainly appreciated her philosophy that science, evidence and practicality needed to underpin regulations and strategies.” Mr Allen said Dr Wright wisely steered clear of any recommendation that agriculture should be included in the Emissions Trading Scheme in her report on biological greenhouse gases last year, describing that debate as being ‘polarised for too long’. She acknowledged that the intensity of livestock greenhouse gas emission has declined by 20 per cent in the last 25 years due to improvements in productivity, and gave thoughtful recommendations on planting larger areas of marginal land in trees as a carbon sink while we wait for scientific breakthroughs on methane inhibitors and vaccines. In a 2014 speech to the Resource Management Law Association, Dr Wright also said, in effect, it wasn’t possible to

fix every environmental concern at once, and resources and targets needed to be prioritised. “Federated Farmers would agree with that. Our policy on environmental issues is that actions need to be sensible, practical and affordable. Quite a number of Dr Wright’s reports and recommendations had a similar tone. “We wish Dr Wright all the best for her next ventures and look forward to working with the new Parliamentary Commission for the Environment, Simon Upton.” Every farmer needs an edge when it comes to pasture burndown and resistance management. And Sharpen® really delivers. Mixed with glyphosate, Sharpen® is the only herbicide in New Zealand powered by Kixor®, a unique active ingredient specially created to increase broad-spectrum control of previously hard-to-control broadleaf weeds. Now with a label extension, Sharpen® delivers outstanding burndown results and an incredibly fast 2 day withholding period for grazing. It’s good news for maize growers too. Used with acetochler, Sharpen® works for pre-emergent weed control in maize.

Cross Laminated Timber (super plywood) can make equally strong construction as other traditional high-rise materials.

Visit agro.basf.co.nz for more details or visit your local distributor.

Engineered wood is also lighter, quicker and quieter to build with, flexible in quakes, renewable, locally grown, fire resistant and locks up surplus atmospheric carbon. All we need now is for our government to recognise these qualities with a wood-encouragment construction policy.

Profits improving as industry stabilises

The average beef and sheep farmer is expected to earn $90,200 next season as overall red meat prices rise.

QUADBAR

“As beef cattle prices have continued at comfortable levels and production conditions have improved, some farmers have been motivated to increase the number of beef cattle they have because cattle are less labour-intensive than sheep.” Mr Burtt says much of the outlook depends on the value of the New Zealand dollar which is expected to ease as major trading economies strengthen in 2017-18. The New Zealand dollar strengthened in 2016-17, to average 71 cents against the US dollar, up three cents on the previous season. “The US dollar is significant for New Zealand’s export-focussed sheep and beef industry because 70 per cent of meat export volume is sold in USDdenominated transactions.” Total farm expenditure is forecast to rise marginally (+0.5%) this season. Though fertiliser prices are expected to remain steady, a lift in spending on fertiliser is expected as farmers continue to focus on improving their soil’s productive capacity. The increase is expected to outweigh a reduction in expenditure on interest, and repairs and maintenance. Much of the 6.6 per cent increase in the average farm profit before tax on sheep and beef

farms results from revenue of deer and velvet (+10 per cent), wool (+10 per cent) and cash crops (+4.8 per cent). Sheep and beef revenue are expected to remain similar as small increases in production and easing exchange rates counter softening export prices. While there were disruptions to the international beef market in 201617, demand is expected to remain reasonable this year, driven by China. Continuing tight sheepmeat supplies in Australia and New Zealand, particularly mutton, are expected to support prices, with exchange rates the prime uncertainty.

The Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s New Season Outlook 2017-18 report forecasts beef and lamb prices to remain similar to the previous season despite an expected weakening of the New Zealand dollar. The report estimates farm profit before tax to increase 6.6 per cent. “This outlook sets the scene for steady meat prices and production, however strong improvements are expected in revenue from deer and velvet as production increases, and from wool, which is coming off low prices,” says B+LNZ chief economist Andrew Burtt. Earnings before interest, tax, rent and manager’s salary per farm, which provides a benchmark for viewing farms on a comparable base, is forecast to increase by 3.1 per cent to $158,800. “A slight drop in the national sheep flock was driven by a drop in breeding ewes but this was tempered by a lift in the number of hoggets, particularly on the East Coast of the North Island.” A rise in the number of beef cattle (+2.8 per cent) was largely driven by weaner cattle being carried over into the 2017-18 farming year in response to good feed conditions and firm prices which were due to tighter availability and strong store cattle prices in 2016-17.

The miniature BY ANN MORGAN Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven is a rescue and rehabilitation centre run by Jennifer and Lindsay Heperi for mini horses from across New Zealand, specialising in rehabilitating laminitis and grass-affected miniature horses.

“W

e care for minis, Shetlands and small ponies. We have two donkeys at present amongst our family of 21 fur kids,” says Jen. “We came about creating The Haven after being asked to help some wee minis that needed care. The owners didn’t realise that they are different to big horses and we learnt about laminitis when we took in a rescue mare with a one-day-old foal and it was a big learning curve. Jenny Patterson from Calm Healthy Horses is Jen’s mentor. “Jenny has taught me so much and supports us with her amazing nutritional products. We also have regular volunteers including a home schooling family, and a photographer. Five years down the track we have a special

feeding programme. Some horses arrive and can hardly walk. Laminitis is like walking on crushed glass. “Laminitis has become a big problem across the country especially with fast growing rye and clover grass. These are high in potassium and sugars and so are muesli and commercial feeds. Many owners don’t add salt and this can contribute to a laminitis attack when lush green grass is added into the mix. This can make a horse become grass affected.” Jen says minis are often labelled little brats and are known for behavior problems due to being treated like large dogs. “This gives a completely wrong impression of how awesome they are. If you don’t understand about potassium and sugars in the grasses, and metabolic syndrome, you are quietly killing them.”

The horse haven is successfully run thanks to the help of volunteers such as Lyall Agnew

Horses get Equine Metabolic Syndrome if they are fed mostly grass. Warning signs include a big thick hard cresty neck and fat lump pads on their body. “Signs of a grass affected horse include twitching and not standing nicely when you put the bridle and gear on.” The couple built three ‘paradise tracks’, special yards with untreated post peelings so the animals walk on a soft surface, carpeted shelter huts, and they have macrocarpas to get shade. “We have rehabilitated more than 30 laminitics in three years. They get their feet soaked in epsom salts and are given magnetic pulse blanket treatments. The nutritional programme involves adding salt, Grazezy, S.O.S and Premium Minerals, and hay is soaked and has no clover or rye in it. “They start on the painkiller Bute, and then are weaned onto a natural pain remedy made specially by Jill Shires and it takes two to four days to see a slight improvement followed by more improvement each day. Chronically affected horses take up to five weeks to become comfortable. At two weeks a horse may lightly trot and by week four they can canter again. “We build up their trust and they have the run of seven acres and come and go as they please. “Rescuing and retraining is easy. Rehoming is difficult. We are extremely protective and ensure those we do let foster know exactly how to care for them. We recently became a charitable trust after five years of funding ourselves with

help from many kind folk sponsoring us. Now we can apply for other sponsorship and grants.” The cost to care for one horse is more than $2,500 per year, or $20-25 a week to keep a mini in the lifestyle they deserve. “We have people nationwide rescuing horses from vulnerable situations. We are known in United States, United Kingdom and Australia with others wanting help. I work full time and we couldn’t achieve what we do without our amazing supporters. “Our volunteer photographer Tracey Agnew comes and puts every animal’s photograph on our facebook page every Sunday night so people can see how their horse is doing. “Mini horses should always be in pairs, not company for a big horse. They need the dentist to file their teeth because they keep growing and the animal cannot eat. Feet need to be trimmed regularly and they need good quality hay. “We love giving horses that are in so much pain their life back. The biggest reward is seeing them run around the tracks, playing, galloping and chasing. I often cry because we saw them start out crippled. We don’t know what goes on behind the hidden hedges, but quality hay warms their bellies and good shelter keeps them out of the wind and rain. “They are what they eat so therefore they are what we feed them.” Check out ‘Mini Ha Ha Horse Haven’ on Facebook.

“W

e used to run an orchard in Patutahi in Gisborne but whenever I go away I always have to visit a lavender farm — whatever country we’re in. I’ve always enjoyed the properties of it,” says Julie. After relocating to the Waikato the couple were looking at houses to buy when they discovered Alphra Lavender was for sale. “As soon as we walked onto the site we saw it was a business we could run, and grow and develop what the Parlane’s had started.”

Prior to taking over, Julie and Bernie helped the previous owners during the harvest season, learning as they went. “The Parlanes were fabulous, Bev and Ian helped us understand the business and complexities and it worked really well — they were amazing.” Harvest takes place towards the end of January depending on the weather. The dried flowers which are used in products such as soaps are harvested earlier in December. The main harvest for the oil based products in January is taken straight to

the distillery on site where the lavender is then processed. Lavender has to sit in 45 degrees for 45 minutes before Bernie then presses the flowers and Julie works on separating the oil from water. “We cut the flowers and then process in a steam distillery, then mature the oil for nine months in a vat and each product is then made from the oil. Some we make on the farm and some of our oil is sent away as cosmetic products are made by our partner companies “Ian has luckily left us his recipe book. It’s been a massive learning curve for Bernie and I. We couldn’t have wished for better mentors. They’ve grown this site, they’ve nurtured the plants and we’re keen to them proud.” Of the 7,000 plants on site there are four commercial oil producing varieties — Grosso, Super, Pacific Blues (all used for the oils) and Impress Purple (dry). Each variety is processed separately due to their specific smells. “If a lavender plant is looked after well it can live for many years, some on the farm are 22 years old,” says Julie. After harvest the first plant trimming takes place and towards the end of April/early May the lavender rows are pruned and weeded again. Julie would like to give local clubs in the Te Awamutu area the opportunity to raise money by being the extra labour that is required for these jobs. “It’s not what I would call strenuous work, it’s labour intensive but not back breaking and I thought some of the clubs might want to participate to help with fundraising.” Even though lavender is largely associated for it’s relaxing powers, for Julie the property that really stood out was the fact the flower could help with digestion.

The stunning lavender farm is one hectare in size.

“I have always given my friends and bought myself, lavender products. Now I’ve got the opportunity to be passionate about what I’m doing and spread the word. “What I’ve learnt is that there is a lot of culinary benefit helping with digestion and stomach issues and there are many other things that I would like to explore as time goes on.” Julie and Bernie sell their 35 lavender products online and in their shop which is open from 10am-5pm during

weekends and public holidays in winter. However once December rolls around the shop opens daily for visitors who are also able to take part in lavender tours. Eventually they hope to set up set up an education centre with a video that showcases the harvesting process. An onsite cafe is also in the cards. “We

are full of hope for our lavender farm. Population and tourism increases mean we have to service more customers every year. “We hope to learn what they want from our business to improve the experience and then provide the services that live up to expectations.”

Preparing for the future

by Ann Morgan

Hugh Jackson grew up in Te Akau on the family sheep and beef farm and is studying at Massey University. He was recently awarded one of six Silver Fern Farm scholarships to go toward his studies.

T

he nineteen-year-old is studying Ag Commerce majoring in Farm Management and his future plans include possibly running the family farm with his younger brother and sister. “We were originally a sheep and beef farm but this year we changed to bull beef because running sheep are not as profitable as bulls due to the low wool prices and things,” says Hugh. The nearly 4,000-acre property is rough hilly country and backs onto the coast. “I have helped out around the farm since primary school, and when I went to

boarding school I couldn’t wait to come and help out in the holidays driving the tractor, fencing, moving stock, drenching, inoculating and technical things. “I always enjoyed the school holidays and was amazed that the day students would want school to start again because they got bored. I was never bored, I loved working with dad around the farm. “I did my secondary years boarding at St Paul’s College in Hamilton and really enjoyed it as those living on site built strong relationships. We ate, slept and competed together as a house and

The family run mainly Friesian bulls that they buy in as yearlings became like a family. “My subjects at university have included accounting, marketing, economics, horticulture, agriculture and statistics. I have a mix of farm science and commerce papers and enjoy doing the agri commerce because you get the farm science papers in there as well keeping it relevant. “When I graduate I may do rural banking for a start. I would like to go farming later in life because I don’t want to burn out or get sick of it too early. “I think doing something else will be beneficial and give me more knowledge for when I do go farming. I have a younger sister and brother and there is enough land for all of us to farm if we wanted.” Hugh says receiving the scholarship was encouraging and will help him further his studies. “One of the application questions was to do with a future challenge or threat to

the industry and I talked about growing and adding value sustainably with the new regulations coming in being able to grow a farming business. “I have ideas already and believe we need to be able to supply higher end products and not try to compete volume wise. Our country doesn’t have the capacity to make it work in large volumes so we need to produce good quality across all sectors — as a small country we can do it well.” Studying for the future is important especially with agriculture and horticulture. We are given relevant information and I can work in many parts of the industry. Degrees allow you to go further in your field of choice. “Even when I have my degree I will still need to gain more practical experience, to understand things properly.” The family are running mainly Friesian bulls and buy them in at yearling age

Heifers have the table cuts such as steaks. Running bulls is a lot less work and will take a lot of pressure off as we don’t have to worry about docking, fly strike and selling the lambs. “Being on the coast is different and it gets quite dry in the droughts. Things dry out quicker but in the winter it grows better grass as it is not as wet and has more free draining. In summer it is dry

ADVERTORIAL

Getting the top quality burgers by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

Well, they have done it with milk, soy milk, now the Frankenstein meat boys are producing burger patties in a lab! I haven’t had a burger since 1997 and that was in Hollister, California. I guessed that there was a meat patty in there somewhere, but it sure as hell had no flavour, and if it did, that flavour was drowned out by the sauce. So, meat-wise there’s no competition; when the cook deals up a homemade burger, made with a 50mm thick pure meat patty, grown on the farm, a few slices of tomato and beetroot, crunchy lettuce and topped off with a couple of dollops of homemade sauce — nothing can compete against that, That’s what the real world wants, that’s what the people want. The artificial world is becoming more and more artificial everyday, which from my perspective, opens up the opportunity

for New Zealand to become the number one, top quality, food producer in the world and this will cover all markets; wine, kiwifruit, stone fruit, avocados, apples, plums etc together with all grass fed milk and all grass fed meat products and heaps of vegetables. We are isolated; we have strong agriculture and horticultural industries. We already have many tourists coming to experience our top quality foods. Our top chefs are leading the way in fine-dining with New Zealand produce. We could easily rank that up to ‘the best food on the planet’. However, to get into the top quality food market, we must first and foremost take out the synthetic, soluble, artificial fertilisers that are impacting on the soil and soil life. At the same time we must stop all use of toxic sprays and drenches. These poisonous products are going directly into our food chain. So it’s time for producers to realign to what is happening and begin setting up a multi-mineral system with help from the micro-organisms to install a full array of minerals to help the plants fix their own immunity to pest and disease.

Once the plants have immunity they pass that immunity on to animals and humans. This multi-mineral system has been around since plants first appeared 460 million years ago and that same system is here today to help install immunity. It’s no big deal, we are only going back to where we came from and when you look at that ‘chemical period’ of say 100 years of spraying plants and then you look at huge natural forests on the planet that have survived and thrived for thousands of years just by having the mineral content to build immunity, there is no comparison. Whoever/whatever put our planet together also put together all the checks and balances to ensure survival of plants, animals and humans. In reality

our planet is looking after all life on Earth. Sure it is in flux all the time, with earthquakes, volcanoes, torrid weather etc, but all in all Mother Nature looks after us well. It’s time for us to return the favour and start making choices that have a positive impact for the planet, our grandkids and great, great grandkids. New Hope For Long Term Back Pain Sufferers

After almost ten years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of Back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I still could walk, there was hope”.

was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time” It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand and Inversion NZ was born.

Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips ten years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, “as specialists had told me it was irreversible, I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief”.

“We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children” he told me, “the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent” What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, “I couldn’t believe it’ he told me “I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here

TESTIMONIAL

DEAR DAVE AND NANCY

In 2008 I had been living with a serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The Specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business.

Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, “I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain, that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves” he told me “most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less” he said “we let the tables do the Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter, Frank has been talking” Inverting for over eight years and has found it keeps him young

Discs: It

uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate. De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots far more effectively and returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

CLAUDELANDS

Come along to one of our expos this weekend. (See bottom for details). If you have completely resigned yourself to having back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised.

Over the years INZ have helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more.

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Claudelands Bowling Club 1 Kitchener Street Claudelands Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th November 10am - 4pm

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there. This is pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two, I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Very best regards Paul Gordon Cambridge

BACK or NECK PAIN? Come along for a free treatment Here in New Zealand, Dr Giresh Kanji, one of the countries most respected Pain Specialists completed a PhD on how humans experience pain and then researched lower back pain, writing "Fix Your Back" and then spent a few years researching neck pain, headache and migraine and wrote "Fix Your Neck Pain, Headache & Migraine", both books are in most bookstores. Dr Kanji discovered in the research that the disc is the most likely source of low back pain and Inversion showed the best results of all the trials conducted. Three studies showed a 60% reduction in pain and one showed a 75% reduction in surgery for people with disc prolapse.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Relieve Sciatica • Improve Posture • Increase Flexability • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Reduce The Effects Of Ageing Caused

Dr Kanji has personally been using the Teeter Inversion tables for his own low back pain, has Teeter Inversion tables at both of his clinics in Wellington (The Sports and Pain Clinic) and has had such success that he is now conducting the largest study in the World on Inversion Therapy. In his own words, "these things are gold and inversion should be a first line treatment for low back pain”.

Improving joints

(Part 2) A recent client had been affected by osteoarthritis in his hips and shoulders. We created a personalised joint health programme that included supplements that can help promote healing in arthritic joints. After speaking with him today he said that he is mostly symptom free. The real hero however is not so much the dietary changes and supplements but his body’s own healing processes. All disease starts with changes to cell functions. If this is left unchecked it can lead to tissue damage and eventually to disease. Our bodies have incredible healing properties that can become overwhelmed by a disease process. While physical damage to joints can cause arthritis it is important to see it as a real disease and not just wear and tear. Joint cartilage appears as tough lifeless tissue. A closer look reveals something quite different. Cartilage matrix is secreted by specialised living cells called chondrocytes. These cells maintain small pieces of cartilage. Anything that negatively affects chondrocytes will eventually damage cartilage. Lose enough cartilage and you have osteoarthritis. Chondrocytes can become damaged

by several processes. Firstly free radicals can damage them to the point that they cannot function properly. If left unprotected by antioxidants the chondrocytes will die and the piece of cartilage it maintained will eventually be lost. Secondly, corrosive enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMP’s) attack the collagen matrix of cartilage, and thirdly unwanted inflammation can damage chondrocytes. What we need to do is to protect chondrocytes, reduce inflammation, reduce free radical activity and reduce MMP activity. What this does is to allow our natural cartilage healing processes to spring to life. The result is less pain and improved mobility. The answer is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant dense diet. We then add anti-inflammatory supplements that can help restore joint healing processes. Please contact me for personalised advice. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Conference will mark 20 years Dairy Women’s Network’s upcoming conference will celebrate the primary reason the Network was established in 1998 — to develop and educate women to add value to the business of dairy and bring women in the dairy industry together. Registrations are now open for DWN18 — ‘Our Land, Our People’ which takes place March 22-23 at the Energy Events Centre in Rotorua, and anyone working in the dairy industry is being encouraged to attend — women, men, rural professionals, all farm workers, and organisations that support the industry. “The conference will focus on the two key elements at the heart of the dairy industry, land and people, and celebrate the Network’s grass roots community and ability to bring people together,” says DWN ceo Zelda de Villiers. “It is very clear to us why our members are drawn to farming — they are proud to be part of a close-knit, supportive community, it is a great lifestyle for their families, and they enjoy working in the outdoors and with animals.” The conference will host three motivational speakers, including TEDx speaker Cam Calkoen, more than 30 exhibition stands, and nine practical workshops covering topics including finance, animal health, sustainability, and wellness. “Next year’s delegates will walk away having built knowledge and gained new skills, and feel inspired and motivated for the year ahead,” says Jodie Goudswaard conference committee chair. “We want to continue to offer workshops that are relevant and timely to what is happening in the industry. We have put more of a practical spin on this conference because we want everyone to come away with solutions and plans to put in place once they get home, and we are offering more workshops and learning options than we have before.” A new addition to the programme is the pre-conference farm tour, where

attendees can visit farms in the area to see new farming technology in action. Founding general manager Lynda Clark has seen her fair share of conferences and says over the years they have evolved to meet the changing needs of DWN’s members. “Technical workshops addressing the key areas women are involved in on-farm, and ones focussed on management and leadership are all topics which continue to be of interest to women in the dairy industry. “Now, we are also seeing full rooms for workshops in health and safety, sustainability, and ones that cover education on complex environmental issues such as nitrogen leaching. We have always had to be innovative and a step ahead in our offerings for our members.” The Fonterra Dairy Woman of the Year and the Dairy Community Leadership awards will also be announced during the conference at a gala dinner on March 22. DWN18 is sponsored by livestock management company Allflex. To register for DWN18, visit dwn.co.nz/ dwn18-conference

John Arts comments: “I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

The Beef + Lamb New Zealand Board has reviewed budgets and activities for the financial year commencing October 1, 2017. The sheep meat levy on all sheep slaughtered would remain $0.60 per head and the beef levy, on all cattle slaughtered (including beef cattle and dairy cattle but excluding bobby calves), at $4.40 per head GST (exclusive). “We have recently completed a consultation round with farmers where we asked for feedback on our updated strategy through to 2022 and also what we are committing to in the year ahead,” says B+LNZ chairman James Parsons. “Farmers have reinforced the issues that matter most to them and have given us strong direction. “Some key areas are improved promotion of our products in partnership with processors, better extension and an influential voice with government to ensure farmers’ backs are covered on issues such as biosecurity, environment and compliance issues. It is pleasing to see farmers are getting real value out of our recent workshops and seminars across some of these key issues, particularly health and safety and environmental planning, and they want more.” He says there is also a big ambition and urgency to see the New Zealand red meat story told, ensuring urban audiences and global customers understand the sector, its value and market difference. “Farmers want to promote the value of New Zealand’s natural pasture fed beef and lamb and high-quality farming systems and draw in consumers with that story, especially as synthetic proteins emerge more into the market.” The environment has emerged as a concern for farmers, particularly around water quality and farming. “Farmers want better connections with all New Zealanders and ensure they better understand that farmers value the environment, and are making big efforts to protect and enhance it. At the same time, they want support for more actions and solutions, more environmental planning workshops and tools to help measure the impact of what they are doing to improve the environment and more engagement with government to ensure practical policies are in place.” He says the newly refreshed B+LNZ strategy for the next five years reflects farmer feedback and sets a vision, priorities and goals to achieve by 2022. “Ultimately, it is about profitable farmers and thriving rural communities valued by all New Zealanders. That is what farmers want and they have given us fantastic feedback to ensure we are focussed on what matters to get there.”

The town’s markets are a great source of locally-grown produce whilst the rose gardens are a must visit, along with the Pirongia village, which is known for quaint art galleries, picturesque walks and cafes. The area also has several significant Waikato war sites including one of the most famous at Orakau. Te Awamutu was the birthplace of Potatau Te Wherowhero, the first Maori

King, and in 1834 the first European missionaries visited the area and set up a missionary settlement in July 1839. Focussing on developing agricultural skills, they established a flourishing trade school and introduced European crops such as wheat, potatoes and peaches to the local Maori people. They helped establish eight flour mills and found a suitable miller to operate these mills and to teach Maori people the skills of milling. The extinct Kakepuku and Pirongia volcanoes as well as other volcanoes of the Alexandra Volcanic Group with Maungatautari, another extinct volcanic cone, now the site of New Zealand’s largest ecological restoration project, are nearby. flavour winding through a rich part of New Zealand’s history, where from as early as 1795 the huge kauri forests of the Coromandel were milled and used for British navy ships. The first of the European settlers came in the 1830s. The Coromandel itself was named after the British Navy ship H.M.S. Coromandel which anchored first off Colville on 13th June 1820. Gold was mined in the 1860s and is still done so in Thames. It was first discovered in 1852 and remains of mines and batteries can still be seen today along the associated walks off the main trail. In the peak of the gold rush days, from 1880 through to the early 1900s, the population of Coromandel was well over 12,000 and had 19 hotels. Some of the old buildings are still standing today.

It helps that there is a fantastic team at Remar Knitwear and the Archibald’s view them as an extended family. The team design for themselves first — wear testing and redeveloping each style several times over prior to production. Their label, Adage Socks, is best known for its Cushy Work, Kid’s Gumboot and Outdoor sock range which is a particular passion of Gordon’s. The label also encompasses an extensive range of blankets, accessories such as beanies, scarves, gloves and baby wear. Danielle has managed the patterns, stitch structure and colour to really make these stand out.

Gordon has always been passionate about machinery, forever expanding the Remar plant to improve and update existing machinery and the resulting garments and socks. He believes that knitwear machinery, like cars, only run as well as they are treated, with maintenance and skilled care being of fundamental importance. Kim has a strong belief in quality, and the importance of both design and manufacture, right down to the yarn sourced and used. Durability and comfort in their sock styles are fundamentals for the team. Melanie can be spotted every year at the Remar Knitwear and Adage Sock Fieldays stand in Hamilton. We are fast becoming known for our great range of adult and kid’s work and gumboot socks at this event. Baby William, Danielle’s son is eight months old and the youngest member of the Adage Sock team. He is already making his presence felt particularly in causing repeated wash testing of the baby Possum socks and cotton patterned

baby blanket range like never before! “We love the knitwear we manufacture, and are passionate about each and every style we create.”

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

FOR RURAL WOMAN ADVERTORIAL

Come fly with us If you have ever thought about flying as a career or a hobby then why not join Mandy, Tracey and Kelly at Waikato Aviation.

SAFETY FIRST ON THE FARM

LOOK OUT FOR YOUR WORK MATES

Bronze garden tools, lifetime guaranteed, amazing to use, wonderful gifts!

For Tracey Gore and Mandy de Beer flying was something they had dreamed about since childhood. Tracey took her first flight at eighteen months in a glider piloted by her father and over the years flying with him secured her desire to fly as a career. At 16 years old she started her flight training in earnest. Mandy also took her first flying lesson at 16, two months after she arrived in New Zealand from South Africa. Twenty days before her 18th birthday Mandy earned her Private Pilot Licence. Kelly Fuatai Lowen’s sisters are both flight attendants — Kelly might have followed in their footsteps but when she saw a picture of a Boeing 747 cockpit she thought it looked so ‘cool’ that her career path was set. Mandy, Tracey and Kelly still love flying and today all three are flight instructors at Waikato Aviation. Mandy

is also an aerobatic instructor. A 20-minute flight with Mandy, Tracey or Kelly is a great way to experience the thrill of flight. Flights are available in our two seat Alpha aircraft or in the Cessna four seat aircraft, enabling friends or family to also enjoy the experience. Who knows, it could be the start of something big. Some of the more popular and well known pilot career options that are available for certified pilots include airlines that encompass the world, as well as local regional airlines on domestic routes. However, there are myriad options out there, for instance corporate and business aviation, cargo air transport, charter and air taxi operations or medical and air ambulance pilots. Or you may just decide to continue in local aviation as a flight instructor

which allows you to teach aspiring pilots, new pilots, and veteran pilots on the intricacies of flying. Certified flight instructors, CFIs, can teach at flight schools, operate as a private instructor, teach at aviation colleges or for airlines. The list is as long as your ambition. The media is full of anecdotal stories about a looming world shortage of pilots with huge numbers predicted by aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus. The numbers can’t be argued with: economies are growing, airline fleet numbers are expanding as never before, and over the next 20 years, projections show that, at the current rate of pilots entering the profession, there won’t be enough pilots to fly them. Family farm trusts at risk

DRIVE SAFE

Agri family businesses that have a trust structure need to make sure they are aware of the changes in legislation that governs trusts.

On Rural Roads

Crowe Horwath business advisory partner Denis Hames says neglecting your family trust has never been a good idea, and in light of the new Trusts Bill currently going through parliament, which would tighten up the obligations and responsibilities of trustees, trusts will need to be reviewed to ensure their ‘fitness’ in the current environment. “The Trusts Bill was introduced to parliament on Aug 1, 2017 and has begun the process of going through readings before going to the Select Committee stage. “Succession discussions for farmers have never been easy, and openly communicating with family members about the future is often put in the too hard basket. The new trust legislation therefore is an excellent impetus for our rural community to start this process, as a lot of land is held in trusts. “The mechanics of trusts are not well understood, and the review of Wills and Memorandum of Wishes for the trustees as part of the trust review process really puts a spotlight on the succession issue. “When things go wrong — and they can go wrong in a big way — some families have become divided and

lost a lot of money. “When we have reviewed trusts we have discovered wills well out-of-date, no memorandum of wishes for the trustees in place, trust records being barely adequate, and the ‘what if’ scenarios lacking.” Mr Hames says in one trust review they found the wills related to a family trust that was wound up 20 years ago, and the beneficiaries in that trust were different to the ones in the existing trust. “Even though the solicitor had formed the new trust and done a Deed of Resettlement to the new trust, he had overlooked updating the clients’ wills and letter of wishes — to the extent the wills didn’t make sense of the current situation.” He says with sharply increased responsibilities for trustees — especially in requiring them to be more accountable to beneficiaries — the possibility of litigation has become greater, unless trustees act appropriately. “There have been far too many instances when something untoward happens and suddenly things become urgent — wills are suddenly looked at, insurance covers examined — but in many cases it is too late. “Now is the time to complete a comprehensive review of your family

A GOOD ‘KIWI CUPPA’ BY JOANNA MANSON

Most Waikato locals would be surprised to learn an award-winning organic tea estate sits right on their door step.

V

incent Chen founded the tea plantation in North Waikato and in 2010 the Zealong brand was launched. “At that time we produced only Oolong tea — a semi-oxidised tea — in three varieties: pure, aromatic and dark. In fact, the name Zealong was formed from the words New Zealand Oolong” said Zealong marketing coordinator, Annalese Webber. Since then, they have started producing green tea and black tea from the same plants and created the Zealong Botanical Collection by blending their teas with other organic herbs and spices. With Vincent already residing in North Waikato it was fitting the tea plantation was established in nearby Gordonton and it was all thanks to the

humble camellia tree. Flowering lush and green, this particular plant thrives in the Waikato. Vincent was struck by the similarities between tea plants and the local camellias. “It was important that the tea seedlings could thrive in the same conditions as the original camellia. Gordonton enjoys extremes of temperature between day and night, and lots of fog and rain, which is similar to the high-mountain conditions tea is traditionally grown in,” said Annalese. In 1996, 1,500 rigorously-selected tea cuttings were imported from the best tea growing regions in Asia. Following a long quarantine from New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture, Vincent was left with only 130 plants. After careful propagation and a wealth of knowledge gained through the years,

Zealong’s lush tea plants add up to just over one million and are now spread over 40 hectares. “Summer is our busiest season. In November, January and March we are out hand-picking the tea and processing it in our state-of-the-art, custom-built facility. “ Annalese says during the rest of the year time is spent maintaining the plantation, researching and developing new products and introducing the tea to new markets. “We don’t just produce tea at Zealong Tea Estate though, so day-to-day running of the estate also involves selling tea from our boutique retail shop, hosting corporate and private events at our range of unique venues, serving gourmet lunch and high tea at our Tea House and guiding guests on tours around the estate.” Zealong pride themselves on growing and selling organic tea. “As a small New Zealand company, organic growing is important to us to keep our products in line with the New Zealand image. The world does have a certain expectation from New Zealand produce and being able to say that our tea is organic certified does add that authenticity and transparency which is important to overseas and domestic consumers.” “It’s also important to us to be innovative and develop sustainable methods for tea farming, in light of current industry issues. Being certified organic is just one part of that, as well as growing tea in a non-traditional region, and being fully traceable and certified across all aspects of production.” Zealong tea is certified organic by BioGro, which is also compliant with EU, USDA, and Canada Organic

21

Gordonton enjoys extremes of temperature making it the perfect climate for tea growing standards, which is useful going into overseas markets. For Vincent and his team the process of converting the land to organic took between four to five years. “It was very much worth it, to be sure we are growing our tea how we think is the right way — no compromises.” With ten different blends Zealong tea is available in tea bag form as well as regular loose-leaf to ensure it appeals to a wide range of tea drinkers. At the Global Tea Championships earlier this year Zealong Black tea came

first place and also won a People’s Tea Choice Award. Zealong Oolong also got a first place and Zealong Green came top in its category too. “So while we now have a much wider choice of tea flavours available, which appeals to a more diverse market, we have seen that within the industry there is still a lot of love for our Origins Collection (Zealong Green, Black, and Oolong teas), because those teas are so unique compared to teas grown in other parts of the world.”

RURAL WHEELS

More than just luck and charm by Andy Bryenton

The time was — and it’s not long ago — that if you wanted a fast four door European car you went right down to your local BMW dealership, picked something with an M on the front and drove home, probably sideways and grinning ear to ear. Audis with an ‘S’ and Mercedes with an ‘AMG’ were also encouraged. But Alfa Romeo, a name haloed with racing glory, was relegated to being considered an enthusiast’s car, with a divine soundtrack but none of the serious underpinnings of the Teutonic trio. To those who still labour under this mindset, the 2017 Giulia is a game changer. They say that greatness is hard to quantify, but by that metric of performance they call the ‘green hell’, Germany’s infamous Nurburgring race circuit, the Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde — it means four-leaf clover — clobbers close to all comers. This pretty, four door tourer took to the ring last year and got around in seven minutes thirty nine seconds. That’s quick — faster than a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640. And while that may not be the newest bull out of Lamborghini’s stable, it’s worth noting that an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio will set you back just shy of $140,000 new. Guess how much the Murcielago is, even second hand? Added to which, the lads at Alfa Romeo were, amazingly, unsatisfied. They took out the manual gearbox, slotted in a clever new eight

speed auto, and proceeded to cut that record time back to seven minutes thirty two seconds. The green four-leafed clover has distinguished the best of the best Alfa Romeo sports cars ever since Ugo Sivocci won the 1923 Targa Florio in an Alfa emblazoned with what had been the coat of arms of one of Italy’s daring First World War flying squadrons. Since then it’s appeared on several special Alfas, with this latest Giulia being no exception. With an engine sourced from Ferrari and producing upward of 500 horsepower, that aforementioned eight speed box, and an exhaust note like the snarling of heavy metal wolves, this is a car which looks, sounds, does, and is the business. Signore Sivocci would no doubt approve. The best part about this resurgence of Alfa Romeo as a feared and respected competitor in the world of European motors — not just thanks to the Giulia QV, as the 4C and 8C were something special, too — is a matter of choice. In a world where the big German three were chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, a beautifully styled, wonderfully fast Italian option is real espresso tiramisu.

With a history that spans massive wins in all manner or racing events, the green cloverleaf is Alfa’s badge of honour

RURAL WHEELS

The royal succession by Andy Bryenton

October 20, 2017 will go down in history as a red-letter day for the antipodean auto industry — the end of production for one of the icons of Kiwi and Aussie roads. This is the end of the line for Australian production of the Holden Commodore, a vehicle which, alongside the Ford Falcon, defined the big four door tourer for several decades. There’s a good argument to be made that the Waikato was a bit of a local ‘spiritual homeland’ for the big Holden V8 — after all, this is a region where the flat land, open roads and motorsport parks lent themselves to enjoying all the power the Commodore delivered. There was a time when every farmer had either a Commodore or a Falcon in the garage for those trips to town. What now then, for the local driver who wants to buy a replacement for the legend? There are three strategies at hand — all of which present a bit of a compromise. First, there’s the option to go European. This is likely to be a pricier option, as BMW, Audi and Mercedes have always sat in a higher price bracket than the famously value-and-power-formoney big two out of Aussie. That being

said, massive power awaits those who forego the simple, tail-happy fun of a big antipodean tourer for the likes of the BMW M series, the AMG Merc or the S-badged Audi. The second option is to drop two cylinders. Modern computer technology and forced air induction mean that cars like Kia’s new Stinger GT and Alfa Romeo’s Giulia Quadrifoglio churn out 0-100 times exceeding those lazy old V8s, with no noticeable turbo lag. The soundtrack may be a little different, but in the Alfa especially there’s a lot to delight the eardrums. And the Kia blitzes the old Commodore in terms of performance, designed as it is by BMW’s ex M-division wizard. Option three will appeal to the brand loyal — jump in either GM’s excellent new Camaro or Ford’s equally brilliant

Oi!

DON’T TXT & DRIVE

End of an era — the Commodore sails into the sunset after clocking up a pedigree matched only by Ford’s Falcon

Mustang. Here you’ll find that brutal V8 roar, power to spare, a simple sense of fun, a great pedigree but a lack of rear doors. Then again, the kids are old enough to buy their own cars, right? And having a real American muscle car is surely on your bucket list? No matter which way you slice it, there’s a compromise to be made. Unless

there’s just no way to let go. In which case, snap up an SS Commodore or FPV Falcon — with Tickford, Walkinshaw or similar badges, where possible — and watch its price spiral up into the realms of collectible automobilia. We may never see their like again, but that doesn’t mean we can’t keep a prime example in the garage.

Stepping out of the shadow by Andy Bryenton

With the demise of the big two — Falcon and Commodore — the market is left with a gap as obvious as a missing tooth. Or is it? If it’s your intention to drive a powerful, eight cylinder, four door cruiser, then an option exists right under your nose. And it’s one which has, in the past, shared everything from Kiwi highways to Aussie racetracks with the big red and blue machines. If none of the other options on the table — go European, drop two cylinders, drop two doors — are appealing, then it’s about time to remember that there’s a third big American auto maker who once made a massive mark on the scene Downunder. That’s the Chrysler and Dodge family of cars, which gave us the family-friendly Valiant, the big Dodge ute and of course the iconic Charger. So, what can Chrysler offer to assuage the loss felt by Ford and Holden V8 fans? Well, first of all, there’s the 300 SRT. A timeless shape with an aggressive stance, acres of mesh grille, and most importantly of all, a massively powerful, 350 kilowatt Hemi V8 under the hood. Built like a Benz and appointed with a host of sophisticated gadgetry — even launch control — the big 300 offers a slightly more refined delivery of maximum torque and horsepower than either an FPV or HSV, which were both joyfully raucous and keen for some tyresmoking fun. But a gentleman bruiser is still a bruiser, even under the neatly cut suit and tie. Underestimate over six litres of Hemi engine at your peril. Looking deeper into the family of Chrysler and Dodge vehicles you’ll find

Detroit trifecta — Chrysler and Dodge are ready to step in where Falcon and Commodore used to rule

even more power on tap, and though it’s eminently easier to get hold of a new 300 SRT — literally just walk into a local dealership and start talking options — the Dodge end of the spectrum out of the States will certainly get the hairs on the back of your neck standing to attention. The Dodge Challenger Hellcat SRT is inspirational in all kinds of ways,

but very recently an enterprising Texan car thief decided to remake Vanishing Point — or possibly the end sequence of Death Proof — with a white example of the 707 horsepower supercharged muscle car. The only vehicle with police written on it which could keep up was a helicopter. So, for those who feel like the world has become a colder, more

austere place with the loss of the Falcon and Commodore, consider instead a third option. You won’t be jumping the fence or compromising on power. And think of the pedigree you’ll be buying into. Dad’s Valiant Ranger is a long way in the past, but for big four door V8s, Chrysler rules the present.

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

RURAL WHEELS

Rally bred resilience by Andy Bryenton

With warmer weather here many people will be thinking about summer adventures off the beaten track. For those with a love of excitement and power, motocross and off-road bikes exert a magnetic pull this time of year, while for others it’s the promise of dry, winding tarmac that gets the blood pumping. Then again, with initiatives afoot nationwide to get people out there on two wheels, perhaps it’s just ease of parking or fuel economy which appeal. While there are plenty of motorcycles which push the envelope in each of these directions — road-going power, off-road agility and frugal commuter practicality — there’s one which brings them all together into a happy medium. And it does so by approaching from a

totally different direction. Honda’s new CRF250L actually has the profile of a working agricultural bike under its sharp panel work — or at least a distillation of all the lessons learned by Honda over decades of building machines that can fulfill multiple roles on the farm. Make Honda’s CRF250L takes it from the streets to the trail effortlessly

no mistake, this is no rural workhorse though. The long suspension travel and high ground clearance, narrow profile for agility and willing 250cc fuel injected single cylinder engine of the CRF250L and its sister bike the CRF350L Rally may be informed by the all-round reliability of Honda’s farming range, but there’s plenty of spice thrown in from the trophy-winning CRF off-road and enduro lineage as well. The Rally version of the CRF250L goes one better, drawing inspiration from some of Honda’s legendary endurance bikes of old. In the days when the Paris to Dakar rally cut clean through the wilds of Africa, big, high-riding motorcycles duked it out with the 4x4s and trucks of this gruelling race. From such sport bikes like Honda’s NX650 Dominator were born, and now the styling cues of

bikes like this — and later adventure models — come together in the Rally spec of the new CRF. With twin headlights, a wind deflector and updated panel work, the Rally looks ready to go anywhere. Which is no illusion. Both iterations of the CRF250 are made to be learner-accessible, ready for the trail and the highway with just the addition of number plates. It’s a great bike for those who live within equal reach of town and country — an inexpensive commuter that can park in spaces too small even for many road bikes, plus a fun trail riding machine on the weekends. Have Honda hit the nail on the head? New riders seem convinced, with the fuel injected 250s meeting a great reception over the ditch. And if anything, New Zealand has even more of the kind of terrain the CRF250L was made to tame.
