ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septi-CureTM is:
Cost Effective Easy To use Improves Soakage Reduces Solids and Scums Eliminates Nasty Odours Reduces Costly Pump-outs
A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. *Results may vary
The fund was set up through the regional council’s 2015–2025 Long Term Plan to support regionally significant projects, which primarily enable economic development. This development must occur in a way that provides a win-win for both the economy and the environment. “We are excited to work with potential partners on their green growth ideas,” said Council chief executive Vaughan Payne. “While we established this fund several years ago, councillors have wanted it to develop in size before awarding monies so a meaningful contribution can be made. We are particularly keen to identify ways to make ratepayer money go further by leveraging opportunities between our fund and the Provincial Growth Fund set up by the government in 2017. “Expressions of interest are being sought from people wanting to be on the independent review group comprising between three and five people. Applications close on Monday, October 28. The group will be responsible for making recommendations to council on whether to fund a project, how much it should receive, whether it should be provided as a grant or loan, and what conditions should be attached. The successful applicants will need to have demonstrated: • competence and understanding of the Waikato Regional Council Regional Development Fund Policy and council’s needs relating to the assessment of funding proposals • proven experience of providing high-quality, value-adding business, financial, investment and risk analysis and services at a governance level • strategic vision and sound judgement • understanding of environmental, social and cultural issues and

opportunities for the Waikato region • knowledge of the Waikato regional economy and the national and international economic context In making their decisions, it is expected the group will take into account Waikato Means Business (the Waikato regional economic development strategy), the national context and economic relationships with neighbouring and complementary regions. Money for the regional development fund comes from revenue from the council’s investment fund, after subsidising rates and allowing for inflation-proofing. By the end of 2018/19, the council had almost $5 million redirected to the regional development fund. Waikato Regional Council will consider investing up to 50 per cent of project costs on a case-by-case basis, and any investment decisions will be at the discretion of the council. To help potential project partners through the funding process, a procedures manual has been developed and is available on request from the council. More information on the fund, and applying to be on the independent review panel, is available at waikatoregion.govt. nz/regional-development-fund.

Easing farm pressure A panel discussion focussed on making life easier for farmers, giving them real, practical tools and advice on ensuring they are compliant is being held in Waikato. The panel that features representatives from AsureQuality, WorkSafe, Waikato Regional Council and DairyNZ, is being run by the Dairy Women’s Network with support from farm management software company FarmIQ. “We want to run this panel as compliance is becoming more and more critical to everyday farming,” said FarmIQ GM of strategy and marketing Tim Nichols. “It can be overwhelming as to what exactly farmers need to do or show, and who they need to be showing this to.” The panel features key compliance decision-makers and enforcers that will cover all the practicalities of staying compliant as farmers. “It will look at what auditors are looking for, what red flags are and the simple things that can be done every day to keep compliant efficiently and effectively. “It is a great opportunity to break down compliance and make it manageable for farmers, so we are expecting really good interest. “AsureQuality and the Waikato Regional Council will lead the discussions, but there will also be valuable input from DairyNZ covering practical tools and resources that are available. There will be farmers telling their stories about how keeping compliant is a part of their daily

routine. We are looking forward to good discussion specific to the farming community around what they really need to be doing and what plans and rules to be adhering to. There is a lot of confusion around plan change five and healthy rivers, for example, so we are expecting a lot of questions to be coming from the floor. It will be a true discussion around compliance, it won’t be a lecture that is delivered, but a real twoway conversation.” Dairy Women’s Network CEO Jules Benton said farmers, and dairy farmers, in particular, want to ensure they are understanding their compliance obligations to enable them to work effectively and efficiently, and that the panel discussion will enable them to do just that.
“It is great to have the support of FarmIQ to deliver information on a topic that needs to be covered,” she said. “FarmIQ are supporting it because they understand the issues around compliance can be challenging. They are well placed to ensure farmers are efficiently and effectively managing compliance by providing them with the practical tools and resources they need to get the job done.” The Compliance — what you need to be doing now and in the future for your farming business, panel discussion is being held on November 13 at the Morrinsville Rugby Club starting at 7pm. Exploring the rose by Ann van Engelen
Roses have a significant place in New Zealand history with many people now specialising in growing the blooms in their home garden.
“I
have personally been growing roses for many years and have more than 600 bushes in my garden. A couple are more than 35 years old and still going strong,” says rose grower Sheree Gare. “Roses began to play a role with our early settlers coming from England in the early 19th century when ‘garden cemeteries’ were popular. Grave plots were fashionably planted with evergreen trees in England to symbolise eternal life. In New Zealand the Sweet Briar rose was planted amongst our dead, commencing as early as 1830 and now the rose, as we know it today, is gaining back popularity in home gardens. “The benefits of gardening are becoming widespread, and it gives me such pleasure to see everyday people
gaining happiness from their roses. We get a sense of responsibility from tending plants, and we learn to look after and respect other living things. “Gardening allows us to be nurturers as plants don’t mind who is caring for them. Gardening can improve our mental health by boosting our selfesteem. Some people use gardening as a stress release while others like to socialise at gardening clubs, which are hugely popular today.” Sheree says roses like to be pampered and will respond well to regular feeding and watering throughout the growing season. “Rose season starts around the middle of winter, and they start flowering at the end of October and can continue through to April/May. They are resilient

plants and can survive for years, the more you pamper, the more they provide beautiful flowers. “Taking care of roses can be as big a task as you want it to be. I believe that growing roses can be compared to raising children. Many people will strongly advise you on how to raise them, but not all ideas suit each family. There are many differing ideas on what to do, how to do it, and when, but these are only guidelines and if you find a way that suits you, then follow it.” Roses are pruned in the winter, generally in July/August, and Sheree suggests ‘DDO’ — Dead, Diseased and Old canes, in that order. “I look at the bush and determine which canes I want to cut first. Any dead canes need to be removed trimming as close to the crown as possible, then the diseased ones. Once I have removed these, I reassess the bush for what is left. As a general rule, I prune about two-thirds off, but if there are not too many newer canes, then I leave some older ones. “A guideline for applying the first application of fertiliser is when the weather is warmer, and the soil temperatures have increased. Usually mid-September and then after the first flush of flowers and again late January to give the bush a boost to continue flowering. There are many different fertilisers on the market today that are usually differentiated by the NPK status. That means the availability of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. It will usually be written on the bag. The higher the number — the higher the concentration of the nutrient. Mulching with compost or natural animal manure can also be applied to rose beds. “I believe spraying is a personal choice, and today modern roses are being bred for higher health. Building

up the soil’s health and providing good nutrients and humus in the soil helps eliminate spraying needs. “I deadhead the spent flowers once roses have had their first flush by cutting off the flower at a five leafed set of leaves. It encourages growth and produces further blooms. This practice can continue until mid-March, and then I let the bush rest over winter, before commencing the growing cycle again. “Beware of rabbits and possums as they can annihilate the roses and eat the new shoots and chew the tops off the roses. To combat them find a pest control system that suits your situation. “Internet today gives us so much information and a particularly good web page Helpmefind gives vast information on different rose varieties available including breeders, genetics and growing habits. “New Zealand has a great climate and grows some of the best roses
in the world. Rosarians across the country like to show their blooms and each year in November there are many rose shows held. Events in the Waikato region, including the Waikato, Morrinsville and Matamata shows see many people presenting their best blooms and entering into floral art classes such as baskets of roses and other novelty classes. “Join us and get some ideas at The Grande National — National Spring Rose Show at the Hamilton Gardens, Hungerford Crescent on Saturday, November 16 from noon and Sunday, November 17 from 10am.”

Wayne and Sharon George have moved from working in stable careers to travelling in their bus taking on various roles such as fruit picking, relief milking and creating possibilities for others to enjoy a lifestyle while travelling.
W
ayne was working in forestry and truck driving and Sharon, a former bank manager, was employed at a geotech surveying company when she had an accident which encouraged them to re-evaluate their lifestyle. “I love how life gives people the ability to think about what they are doing. I lost my first husband at 23 years old, and life wasn’t easy. Just when we got to a point where things were going great I tripped over a shoe at work and smashed my head into a wall,” says Sharon. “When I tripped I had my handbag in one hand
and laptop in the other and didn’t want to drop either so broke my fall with my head. The doctors thought I had broken my neck but I hadn’t. It was the worst phone call I had to make to Wayne who was in the forest with hardly any cellphone reception.” Sharon ended up in a neck brace but didn’t realise she had a concussion. “I flew to Wellington in an unpressurised plane two days later for work. This ended with me being very unwell, and we went from hoping to travel one day to making it happen.” Wayne said it left him with a hollow

feeling and he was helpless being so far away. “Who knows if you have six days, six months or six years left to live. We decided to do what makes us happy as we had been constantly putting off our plans to travel the country in our bus.” Wayne and Sharon have been keeping a record of places where they had previously found work while on adventures. “We have been up to Russell and worked in a holiday park. We have packed kiwifruit in Katikati, milked cows and painted houses to name a few
things mixing with completely different types of people. “We went to Fiji with toys and books for schools and kindergartens in outback villages. There was no power — we slept on planks and washed with minimal water in a bucket due to the water shortage. We learnt what was really important as we helped and socialised with the locals who don’t have a lot but are happy.” Wayne and Sharon put photos and videos on a website to show others what they were doing in life and out of this came Seasonal Staff.

“Our blog created interest from employers and job seekers as we don’t just pick apples. There are opportunities for cleaners, restaurant staff, strawberry and cherry pickers, ski season and tractor operators. “Every employer has to give their permanent staff four weeks annual leave, and we can now help reduce pressure as we have engineers, builders, teachers, nurses, accountants, IT people, and unskilled people who just want to get the odd job as they travel. Our Seasonal Staff website allows people to look at the profiles available. “We never had the intention of building a seasonal work business, but there was a huge need as employers couldn’t find staff and travellers we met couldn’t find jobs. We would send emails to the businesses in areas we were travelling to and pre-booked a year’s work. We thought everyone did this, but they don’t. “The older generation has skills and wants to travel, and we help facilitate their opportunities. We have given people wings to follow their dream by pointing them in the right direction and giving them the ability to connect and do so much more. “We have some 700 workers registered and had more than one million website hits since June 7. It has taken off like a rocket — we are having 50 people join per day. Farmers who need a break can register and see who is available. They come up
Milking cows, painting and picking fruit are some of the opportunities the George’s have embarked upon
on a map around New Zealand, and most are mobile and will travel to you. We have fencing contractors, and painters — there are so many CVs with different skills. “We have travelled the country from the Far North to Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, Taranaki, Taupo, Whakatane, Canterbury and Southland looking at farming, market gardeners and the ski lodges. “We have picked avocados, milked and done odd jobs on farms. We have people who can relief milk for people, harvest kumaras, a photographer and administrator.
“The variety is amazing with beekeepers and vet clinic helpers for debudding. We even met up with a structural engineer. It is not the same as being a contractor so people can step right into jobs, and this is fantastic with the staffing shortage we have at present across the country. “The NZ Motorhome Association love the idea, and the most amazing part is we inspire others. This includes one representative from each state and one from New Zealand, to judge a group of animals.” Sam Tipping grew up in the Waikato and spent time in Northland during intermediate school. “I won the stock judging at the Waikato A&P show last year, which allowed me to qualify for the Hawke’s Bay Royal Show where I won the meat breed sheep judging,” says Sam. “I have a Hereford stud of 30 cows in Waitomo Caves and sell R1 bulls into the dairy market. “As both the Dairy and Beef parader, Cara felt very privileged to represent New Zealand in something she is passionate about. She stood out as someone to watch in the agricultural world, she is passion-driven, successful and has a keen interest in supporting the movement,” says Courtney. “She was randomly assigned a young animal one hour before the class started, giving them a chance to acclimatise before taking to the ring. Once in the competition, competitors had to swap animals, parade without stock sticks, and quickly identify the animal’s strengths and weaknesses to show it off in the best way possible to the judge. “In the Poultry Judging Competition we were required to judge three pens of four birds, including Australian Game, Orpingtons and White Leghorn Bantams, and place them in first to fourth and then present our reasons as to why we chose those placings. He then evaluated our competency in speaking, comparative statements, accuracy of observation and presentation. “I competed in this class for the first time last year at the Royal Adelaide Show and learned so much from it. It was great to catch up with two friends who helped me last year, even though we were competitors at the time. Each competition often took more than an hour to decide the winner. We thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie amongst exhibitors.” “It has been difficult to continue showing in New Zealand with many shows shutting down their cattle section

ADVERTORIAL
A pain in the …
by John Arts
Muscle pain can have many causes; it can be anything from injury, genetics, medication side effects and a number of diseases. The most common causes of muscle pain I help with are cramp, restless leg syndrome, Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR), Fibromyalgia (FM) and side effects of cholesterollowering medication. There are a number of effective nutritional medicine strategies we can use to help with muscle function. Our goal is to help relax stressed muscle fibres and improve muscle oxygenation through improved circulation — this is important at night for conditions like cramped and restless legs. Muscle stiffness and pain can be a side effect of statin cholesterol-lowering drugs. Statins slow the rate of the enzyme responsible for cholesterol production. However, this same enzyme is responsible for producing coenzyme Q10. A high-quality coenzyme Q10 like the US-patented CoQsol can help. Some diseases cause muscle pain. Two more common problems are the inflammatory condition PMR and FM, a non-inflammatory muscle problem. With PMR we target overproduction of inflammatory immune system chemicals (cytokines and prostaglandins) and help restore immune function. With FM we focus on adding compounds like magnesium and
MSM (sulphur) to relax and oxygenate muscles. Once we know the cause of the pain, my role is to identify the healing processes damaged or affected by the problem. For example, cramp and restless leg syndrome can be an indication of mineral deficiencies or poor peripheral circulation. As an example, people with cramp generally respond very well to magnesium therapy. The best magnesium supplements use expensive, but better-absorbed amino acid chelated forms. While magnesium can be very effective, some people need to be careful with magnesium therapy, especially those with digestive issues or on some medications. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv. Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. For questions or advice contact John on 0800 423 559 or email john@abundant.co.nz. Scholarship programme welcomed An initiative offering scholarships to apprentices working in the agricultural and horticultural industries is being welcomed by Beef + Lamb New Zealand. Primary ITO launched the scholarship programme recently in response to the urgent need for skilled workers in the primary sector. Scholarships are available for apprenticeships in the sheep and beef industry, dairy farming and horticulture and will cover fees for the duration of the apprenticeship programme, which is typically two to three years. B+LNZ’s Sector Capability manager Doug Macredie says the scholarships should increase the number of sheep and beef employees completing New Zealand Certificates in Agriculture under the apprenticeship delivery model. Formal training and learning while working has been proven to increase productivity, innovation and motivation for the employee and across the Doug Macredie, B+LNZ’s Sector Capability manager farm business. Grant and Laurell Kennedy at ASAP Decorative Specialists Ltd have been operating for more than 15 years in the painting and decorating industry and have extended their experience to provide concrete restoration and maintenance solutions to farmers. Grant says re-establishing and resurfacing concrete pads, footpaths and other areas as well as having a maintenance programme in place helps protect your valuable assets. Based in Waikato, the couple have the equipment and technical ability to get a variety of jobs done. “At present, I am completing concrete resurfacing on a 40-aside herringbone shed. The acid and milk fats had worn away the top part of the concrete and exposed aggregate, which can cause lameness in stock. It traps fats, dirt and bacteria and increases the difficulty for staff to keep clean. It can also create potential trip hazards and can become a slippery surface with built-up effluent. “For these issues we can cater to our clients budget and resurface the area with a layer of new concrete over the top, replacing damaged pieces by filling such areas in. “This includes anywhere you have concrete surfaces such as old cowsheds, shed flooring and footpaths, and the end result looks like new. We like to focus on the dairy shed area as it is important for health and safety of both workers and animals.
ASAP DECORATIVE SPECIALISTS LTD
“If you have surfaces that look scummy and dirty, we can concrete grind it to clean again with practical concrete coverage, which can have colour added for a desirable effect or apply an epoxy non-slip coating down that is aesthetically pleasing. “It is a quick turnaround of between six hours and one week — depending on the situation. “We pre-plan and work around schedules and also restore walking and working areas, lunchrooms and hallways. There is a lot of flexibility to
provide the service each client needs. Once completed, we recommend a maintenance system that will actively work over six months to keep the surfaces clean, mould and slime free. “This helps ensure things look good throughout the year, and we can time this to coincide with inspections. Providing new surfaces on concrete pads helps keep things in good order for the comfort of your stock and less mould, less grime and less slip.” For more information call 07 390 ASAP (2727).

apart from the farm house must be safe for everyone. Contractors must also keep farmers healthy and safe by ensuring any risks from their work that could affect the farmer, farm workers or other contractors on the farm are reasonably managed. If a risk can’t be eliminated then it must be minimised, so far as is reasonably practicable. Farmers and contractors should consult, cooperate and coordinate activities with each other. They must work together to meet their overlapping duties every time a contractor comes on farm. Having a faceto-face or over the phone meeting before work starts can help to reach a common understanding and establish clear roles, responsibilities and actions. It will also prevent any gaps in managing health and safety risks. The more influence and control a farmer or contractor has over a health and safety matter, the more responsibility they are likely to have. Checklists and possible questions for both parties include knowing where each will be working, having contact details and informing each other of expected or unexpected risks and other work activity on the farm that could pose
a risk to them and how to manage and communicate those risks. Contractors must be informed of farm rules such as speed limits, alcohol or drug use and any expectations of their behaviour on farm. Ensure all parties know relevant emergency procedures and determine appropriate time in/ time out reporting. Have a back-up plan, especially if there is no phone coverage and keep a record of what you have discussed. Printing and markingup a farm map to show hazards is also a helpful idea and have visitors

call in at the farmhouse, or phone before starting work. If necessary help them across rough terrain using an appropriate vehicle. The contractor should advise the farmer where the team will be working on the property should there be various destinations or projects being taken care of and check for hazards themselves as well and inform all concerned of any extra emergency procedures that may need to be known. In all environments, safety must always come first.

GPS — the contractors friend From top dressing aircraft to tractors and any number of mobile machines in between, GPS has become just another tool that can make farming, the agricultural services and contractors serving the rural industry more efficient — and thus more profitable. Once the stuff of mystery and imagination, and used to guide US military manoeuvres and missiles, today GPS is — as the Chase TV chap would say “just another day at the office”. GPS-based applications in precision farming are being used for farm planning, field mapping, soil sampling, tractor guidance, crop scouting, variable rate applications, and yield mapping. GPS allows farmers and their contractors to work during low visibility field conditions such as rain, dust, fog, and darkness. In the past, it was difficult for farmers to correlate production techniques and crop yields with land variability. This limited their ability to develop the most effective soil/plant treatment strategies that could have enhanced their production. Today, more precise application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers, and better control of the dispersion of those chemicals are possible through precision agriculture, thus reducing expenses, producing a higher yield, and creating a more environmentally friendly farm. Precision agriculture is changing the way farmers and agribusinesses view the land from which they reap their
profits. It is about collecting timely geospatial information on soil-plantanimal requirements and prescribing and applying site-specific treatments to increase agricultural production and protect the environment. Where farmers may have once treated their fields uniformly, they are now seeing benefits from micromanaging. Many of the new innovations rely on the integration of on-board computers, data collection sensors, and GPS time and position reference systems. Some people believe that the benefits of precision agriculture can only be realised on large farms with huge capital investments and experience with information technologies. There are inexpensive and easy-to-use methods and techniques that can be developed for use by all. farmers. Through the use of GPS, GIS, and remote sensing, information needed for improving land and water use can be collected. Farmers can achieve additional benefits by combining better utilisation of fertilisers and other soil amendments, determining the economic threshold for treating pest and weed infestations, and protecting the natural resources for future use. Location information is collected by GPS receivers for mapping field
boundaries, roads, irrigation systems, and problem areas in crops such as weeds or disease. The accuracy of GPS allows farmers to create farm maps with precise acreage for field areas, road locations and distances between points of interest. They can accurately navigate to specific locations in the field, year after year, to collect soil samples or monitor crop conditions. Crop advisors use rugged data collection devices with GPS for accurate positioning to map pest, insect, and weed infestations
in the field. Pest problem areas in crops can be pinpointed and mapped for future management decisions and input recommendations. The same field data can also be used by aircraft sprayers, enabling accurate swathing of fields without use of human ‘flaggers’ to guide them. Crop dusters equipped with GPS are able to fly accurate swaths over the field, applying chemicals only where needed, minimising chemical drift, reducing the amount of chemicals needed, thereby benefiting the environment.

Time to tender for business Spring will soon turn to summer and the farm contracting business will be warming up along with the temperatures and with that comes time to get equipment out of the shed and ready for balage or any number of farm contract jobs. As always is the case, idle machinery is not going to add to the income and for many farmers who also make up membership of the Rural Contractors Association of New Zealand, summer is an opportunity to get a welcome earner off the actual home farm, The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment has some good advice on how to get into the paperwork that involves tendering for contracts, an activity that may be time consuming but it can also lead to substantial rewards, and an aid in planning work schedules and perhaps taking on additional seasonal staff. “You should think carefully before, during and after the process. Finding the right opportunities, doing the prep work and being vigorous during the tendering process will increase your chances of winning contracts,’’ a ministry spokesman says. “Tendering is the process involved in responding to an RFx a catch-all term meaning Request for information, a quote, a proposal, or tender. An RFx can come in many shapes and forms. If it’s for a small amount of work, it will be fairly straight forward. But applying
for larger and/or long-term contracts will require a significant amount of time, thinking and resources to complete. You will need to be strategic when you decide which tenders to respond to. Going for every RFx you come across is a waste of time and energy. “Your probability of success will increase if you only respond to ones in the area of your existing services and expertise. “Even if the contract is relevant to your business, you should first consider how
much preparation will need to go into the application process, and whether your business is able to sustain that effort — especially as winning the contract isn’t guaranteed. Losing a tender can be disappointing, but it can be an important business opportunity. Always ask for feedback from the buyer on why your application wasn’t successful. You can use that information to help you learn

“Our Voluntary Bonding Scheme for Veterinarians is designed to support and boost the number of graduate vets in our regions,” says Ministry for Primary Industries director investment programmes, Steve Penno. “It is available for graduates who are working with production animals such as cows, sheep and working dogs.” This year’s successful recipients will each receive funding of $55,000 for five years — a total of $1.76 million. The scheme generally provides funding for 30 graduate vets a year — however, additional funding was available this year for an extra two. Since the programme started in February 2009 MPI has approved funding for 318 graduate vets. “Vets play a vital role in our primary industries and rural communities. The Voluntary Bonding Scheme for Veterinarians is a key way of attracting skilled workers to hard-to-staff veterinary practices in the regions, and giving graduates an early boost to

DAIRY Mystery Creek Events Centre 19th and 20th November 2019, from 8.30am to 3.30pm
Speakers for 2019 Expo Former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry leads a strong lineup of speakers confirmed for the 2019 Effluent & Environment Expo at Mystery Creek Events Centre on November 19 and 20. Expo organiser Amanda Hodgson says farmers can choose to attend any of the educational seminars running throughout both days of the expo. “We wanted to deliver a combination of education on effluent management and something for the top few inches too in our speaker slots this year. Making sure farmers are sorted in terms of their own wellbeing and mental health is crucial, so we are so pleased to have someone of the calibre and experience of Sir Graham on our speaker list,” says Amanda. “I recently heard him speak at another event and he is amazing. His role with the All Blacks means he is well equipped to talk about the value of team and personal wellbeing. He is also very amusing and fun, so it is a great opportunity for farmers and their staff to come along and enjoy themselves as well as learning something from a master of people management.” Sir Graham will speak at 4pm on the
first day of this year’s expo, Tuesday, November 19. “Also confirmed are Manawatu dairy farmer and author of The Lean Dairy Farm, Jana Hocken, and respected agribusiness commentator Jacqueline Rowarth. Jana is the author of The Lean Dairy Farm, a book she has written to help farmers learn how to run more efficient, profitable dairy units. Rowarth is a regular columnist in several rural publications. The primary aim of the expo is to provide farmers with positive, effluent management solutions, but we can see potential to broaden that out to offer farmers advice, products and services across the entire farm environment package. This is really just the start of a journey. “A new layout, which takes in the entire event centre pavilion at Mystery Creek, home of the National Fieldays event just south of Hamilton, means there is scope to increase exhibitor numbers to more than 100.

This year’s expo will follow a similar format to the highly successful 2018 event and remain free for farmers to attend, thanks to the generosity of sponsors Fonterra FarmSource, Rabobank, DairyNZ, Waikato Regional Council, Mystery Creek, and official media partner NZ Dairy Exporter. “Speaker times and seminar topics were released in the expo’s official guide that was mailed to every dairy farm in the country with the October 15 issue of NZ Dairy Exporter.” Farmers are encouraged to visit the expo website to register for this free event as well as each seminar as the seminar spaces fill up fast, visit effluentexpo.co.nz/ farmer-registration.

WHEELS
An experiment in evolution by Andy Bryenton
Ford have long had an association with creating compact and powerful cars. Just look at the forthcoming movie in which Henry Ford’s son matches wits with the formidable Enzo Ferrari, leading to the creation of a vehicle only 40 inches tall that wipes the Le Mans racetrack with Italian oil, thanks to a couple of Kiwis, naturally. In more recent years, the blue oval has enlisted some heavyweight help to keep its compact and sporty offerings right at the edge of the curve. From the famous little Cosworth — tuned hot hatches of the late 20th century, through to the recent Focus ST with its input from legendary auto maestro Ken Block, there’s been a willingness to experiment, to let some fresh air and a whiff of punk rock attitude into the design studio and factory. 2020 has proven no different. Let’s begin with the juicy numbers — 276 horsepower. That’s more than you’d get from a sporting Mercedes not so long ago, for the kind of money which billionaires find down the back of the couch. Now it’s crammed into the 2.3 litre engine of the most powerful Focus ever and it hasn’t stopped the Focus from being, well focussed. From the first run of these cars people have been
impressed by how they handle and carving through the curves has not been neglected with the 2020 model. There’s also a handy 420 Nm of torque so you can go deep into the corners and power out with a wave of g-force smashing you back into the racing seats like a polite but firm doorman. This is all fine and good, but purists will insist that the inspired insanity of the previous model carries over. It does, with little touches that mean Ford have consulted the tyre-smoke and burning octane brigade comprehensively. Such as a driving mode which can be selected ‘for race track use only’, and continuously controlled damping which checks the car’s position every 2 milliseconds and adds a little

nudge to keep holding down a razor sharp line. Sport mode can be engaged with a single button, and it’s right there on the steering wheel, tempting you to get a little bit crazy.
That’s the ST spirit! From the looks outside to the cabin’s more subtle presentation, the new Focus ST has grown up a little. But make no mistake, it’s still up for some adventures.

Kodo philosophy class
23
Mazda are big on their philosophies, with a lot of column inches of advertising copy devoted to the very Zen-like deep thought behind their engineering. All this could be written off as the equivalent of Audi’s vorsprung dursch technik or BMW’s claims to ultimate driving prowess, if it wasn’t proven to deliver nice results. Take the MX-5 for example. A car which did away with a lot of the extraneous bits and delivered the philosophy of ‘horse and rider in balance and harmony’. That sounds a bit high-brow for a small sports drop top, until you drive one (one of the original, late 80s models) and see that they knew what they were on about. Which is why, when Mazda say that their new Mazda3 represents the high point of their evolving Kodo — Soul of Motion philosophy by stripping away the needless bells and whistles and delivering a smart, engaging little sedan, it’s time to take notice. The fact that they have a sedan at all is fantastic in this era of the cross over SUV. People used to buy those to be different; now having a tidy four door car makes you the rebel at the edge of the bell curve. It looks good, too. Mazda describe the exterior styling as a ‘single brush stroke’, and it’s quite the opposite of the fussy futurism of cars like the Civic Type R or the Toyota CR-R with their fins, blades, vents and slashes. Here’s how they describe it; “Every element of All-New Mazda3 Sedan has been created with the intention to further strengthen the connection between car and driver. A less is more approach has been followed to develop a cabin that’s as beautiful as
it is functional.” What you get is black leather and chrome functionality, like something Darth Vader would design if he was an upscale architect. Power in the Limited and GTX specs is provided by the superior Skyactiv 2.5 litre inline four engine, delivering over
180hp and yet still cracking down on fuel economy with auto-stop features and Mazda’s finely tuned fuel injection for 6.5l per 100ks. Those who want a hot version will have to wait to see if Mazdaspeed will sprinkle chili flakes on this latest
offering, perhaps also shoehorning in AWD. Until then, the GTX strikes a nice balance between features and cost, and really does have that paredback purity of purpose which Mazda’s philosophy advertises.
