New chairman announced New Zealand Animal Evaluation Limited has welcomed Waikatobased farmer Mark Townshend as board chair for the dairy cattle breeding subsidiary of DairyNZ. Mr Townshend is taking over from the retiring chair Warren Larsen. DairyNZ chair Jim van der Poel says he is pleased to have Mark on board due to his knowledge, passion for genetics and skillset, which will be valuable, as NZAEL enters a new phase of evolution. “Mark has more than 45 years’ farming experience in New Zealand and internationally, and is an experienced chairman. Perhaps, most importantly, he has a lifelong passion for bovine genetics through four stud herds, and a deep understanding and appreciation of the National Breeding Objectives,” said Mr van der Poel. “As a wholly-owned subsidiary of DairyNZ, the mandate of NZAEL is to lead the independent provision of state-of-the-art national genetic evaluations, for the New Zealand dairy sector. “NZAEL is a complex system which underpins crucial decision-making for farmers and their animal breeding. We are constantly adjusting and updating the systems to improve data and information for farmers. “In a bid to deliver improved breeding values, during 2020, we have focussed on implementing the most recent genetic evaluation software. Our next phase is to work toward a national genomic evaluation system for New Zealand dairy farmers.” Mark and the NZAEL board will be supporting the transition of genomic data into the NZAEL system, as the emphasis shifts to utilising genotype information. Mr van der Poel acknowledges the great work Warren Larsen has done with NZAEL and its team in
Mark Townshend, New Zealand Animal Evaluation Limited new board chair
establishing new databases and animal evaluation software. “Warren has supported the NZAEL team with ensuring there’s a reliable and future-focussed source of genetic evaluation information for farmers which is independent and achieving the National Breeding Objective for dairy cattle. “There is a lot of work on data standards which underpins the system, and we are excited by where it’s at, thanks to Warren’s leadership.” As part of the next phase, the results of the research will be integrated into the NZAEL system, and new research initiated.

Leadership challenge for growers
3
The finalists in the inaugural Ahuwhenua Young Maori Grower Award 2020, have been told that one of the big challenges facing Maori, is increasing the number of young Maori into leadership roles in the horticultural sector. The three finalists, 24-year-old Brandon Cross, 26-year-old Maatutaera Akonga and 25-year-old Finnisha Tuhiwai, were taking part in an intensive three-day study tour designed to provide a range of insights, inspiration and experiences across the horticultural sector. The Young Maori Farmer Award was inaugurated in 2012 and is designed to recognise up-and-coming young Maori in the farming and now horticulture sectors. This year the competition is for horticulture. It is built on the vision of the great leaders Sir Apirana Ngata and Lord Bledisloe who sought to inspire and encourage Maori to excel in the wider agri-sector. One of this year’s competition judges, Matiu Julian of Primary ITO, says while Maori make up 28 per cent of the workforce in the sector, only four per cent are in leadership roles. “All three finalists in this year’s competition are in leadership roles, but they are the exception rather than the rule. The study tour organised by New Zealand Apples and Pears was used as a platform for observing the finalists and selecting a winner to be announced in November. “It was designed to give the finalists an insight into the innovation taking

participated in a presentation from Horticulture New Zealand. They spent time with Ngahiwi Tomoana, the chair of Ngati Kahungunu, his wife Mere and Karl Wixon, a designer, educator, project manager, strategist and ‘kaupapaholic’. Matiu Julian says the three-day study tour offered the finalists a sense of connection and celebration of Maori success as the next generation of young
Maori looking to evolve and live up to the Ahuwhenua Trophy legacy in horticulture. “The challenge before them is to think about the types of experiences that they want to have, how they want to grow and how they can give back to their whanau and communities. The winner of the Ahuwhenua Young Maori Grower competition will be announced in Rotorua on Friday, November 20.”

The end of an era BY ANN VAN ENGELEN

PART TWO
S
ue and her late husband, Dick were passionate advocates of the Holstein Friesian breed. “I don’t believe any one genetics company has all the best bulls and over the years we always shopped around for the best we could find,” says Sue. “One of my favourite early bulls was Scottish Sovereign Star. He was born in 1972, and his progeny were all beautiful cows. “We also had good results using Wainui Star Critic, Kauri Ridge Sheik Calypso, Gillette Windbrook, Picston Shottle PI-ET and more recently, Fairmont Mint-Edition. We had a lot of lovely Calypso cows, including SRD Uhuru Calypso Bounty EX4.
“We had a regular embryo transfer programme, to help fast-track genetic gain in the herd and we imported a few embryos from North America and Holland. We also flushed Bountyl. She was a hard cow to get a result from, but we managed to get embryos out of her for a contract to South Africa. One of her sons, Uhuru Pald Billionaire, who was sired by Valden Curious Paladium, was bought by CRV Ambreed.” SRD Uhuru Gerris Acrobat was also bought by CRV Ambreed, and SRD Uhuru Gerris Atom Ant was purchased by LIC. “I wound down our embryo transfer programme because my age was always nagging in the back of my mind. If we were flushing cows, then I would want

to be around to milk the offspring. With retiring, I am now helping a Rangiora dairy farmer rebuild his life after losing his herd in the Mycoplasma bovis cull. He made me an offer I couldn’t refuse for my girls. It was always my wish to keep the milking herd together, rather than having a dispersal sale. “He bought the mixed age cows, incalf heifers and all the young stock. The
new wave of compliance and uncertainty has taken some of the fun out of farming for me and helped make my decision.” For the sale all of Sue’s cows had to be blood tested to confirm they were free of Mycoplasma bovis. “I have not given up farming altogether. I purchased a 4.5-hectare lifestyle block in Matamata. To make the transition easier, I kept nine old girls

An avid supporter of the Holstein Friesian breed, Sue has focussed strongly on her herd genetics during the years
which I have brought with me. I also have my granddaughter’s 10-year-old Speckle Park-cross cow. She was a calf club animal and was a perfect shed cow, she tried extremely hard to be a dairy cow for eight years, but failed. “Several of the cows are calving, but I won’t be sitting on a three-legged stool to milk them. Over time I have found myself surrounded by younger people, who I am sure, have helped keep my energy youthful. Seventy-four is just an irritating number. I don’t know what being 74 years old should feel like. I might look 74, but I certainly don’t feel it. “I feel privileged to have had a Holstein Friesian herd, and my love
for the breed led me to make some lasting friendships. I hope all fellow breeders can derive as much pleasure as I did over the years. Cows are my passion, and it grew in intensity rather than declined as age crept in. I love my cows; I really do, others didn’t know the intensity of how I felt. “I am really pleased I can retain my interest and am excited that my cows have calved. The heifer calves are a saleable commodity, and I will sell them in calf at about 18 months because on a lifestyle block their potential will never be recognised. The bull calves will sell at weaner weights. “My 10-acre block suits my requirements really well. When I first

Sue believes dairy farming is still a positive, fulfilling career with many rewarding outcomes for young people to get into
people would give it a go, I am sure they would love it. Dairy is considered to be unsociable to some people as it is an early morning rise, but it is so rewarding. “It can be daunting to get into, but it is possible because people are still doing it. If you have an interest in dairy farming, give it a crack, I am sure you will be rewarded far more than you imagined.”

I love the rural life and will avoid suburbia for as long as I can — a lifestyle block transitions you to whatever lies ahead. “I think dairy farming for a young person is still a wonderful career. Seizing agricultural
opportunities BY ANN VAN ENGELEN WAIKATO DAIRY FARMER PETE SMIT HAS SEIZED AGRICULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES THAT HAVE COME HIS WAY AND AS A RESULT, TAKEN OUT ONE OF THE NATION’S TOP JUDGING AWARDS.
A
t 22 years old, Pete is one of a growing number of young business-savvy New Zealanders that are seizing opportunities in the dairy sector. Pete was recently awarded the coveted Frank Pfister Trophy for being the highest-scoring youth member at a Holstein Friesian NZ judging school. “It was a bit of a shock. Judging dairy cattle is quite subjective. There is often no right or wrong answer. I did well on the day with most of my placings being in line with the over judges,” says Pete. Pete graduated to the senior judges’ list, and he will be able to judge alone at A&P shows this summer. “I was brought up on a dairy farm, and my parents also bred racehorses for a little while. This certainly played a role in my passion for genetics. I am in my third
season as a herd-owning sharemilker on a 68-hectare farm at Ohaupo. “I spent two years working with my older brother dairy farming. We decided to rejig the business by reducing our cows to rely less on staff. I brought the cows off him and went out on my own and he was able to destock a bit and take things easier. “The property I am on is jointly owned by my mother, Nienke Hartog and my brother Floyd. My herd is now just over 200 Holstein Friesian cows that produced almost 130,000 kilograms of milk solids in the 2019–20 season. “We have a fairly high-input system, which helps minimise any feed shortages caused by weather events, such as drought. Having the infrastructure to fully-feed the herd
Pete Smit is determined to learn all he can to improve the genetics of his Holstein Friesian herd

In his third year of sharemilking, Pete is focussing on reducing his farm debt with the goal of progressing to a larger herd in the future The farm is a high input property with the herd producing an average of 630 kgMS each cow
enables me to milk twice-a-day yearround and maximise production. “The herd averages 630 kgMS per cow, which sits well above the Waikato average of 364 kgMS per cow. I have a feed pad and large feed bunker that are situated near the 16-aside herringbone milking shed. “The farm has heavy peat soils, which can be a challenge to manage, but I am getting more confident each spring. The herd’s diet of pasture is supplemented with home-grown maize silage, grass silage, palm kernel expeller and other concentrates. “We planted 12 hectares of maize last year and the crop yielded 21.7 tonnes per hectare, which was great given the dry summer we had. Almost half of the herd calves in the autumn, starting in early March and finishing by
Anzac Day. The remainder of the herd begins calving in late July. As a young 50/50 sharemilker, it has been a big advantage for me not having to cull all of my empty cows each year. “Most of the cows were descendants of pedigree animals from my parents’ Hibi Holsteins herd. There is also a strong influence of genetics from Waipiri Holsteins. With the milk payout forecast to drop from last season’s estimated $7.15 per kgMS to as low as $5.90 per kgMS this season, I keep a good eye on my budgets. Extra supplements are only bought in at the right price.” Pete is focussing on debt reduction and trying to manage his business’s cash flow in these uncertain times. “I hope to progress to a larger 50/50 sharemilking position within the next 10 years. Long-term I would like to own a

dairy farm, but that’s likely to be through an equity partnership. “I am passionate about Holstein Friesians and breeding high-producing dairy cows. I do my own artificial insemination and this season will do all AI and use no bulls for the first time. “My in-calf results have been quite good recently, so I decided to back myself and do away with having bulls as a backup. I use a mix of New Zealand and overseas genetics over the herd. “I focus on trying to breed animals with lots of capacity, good management traits and high components. “I enjoy assessing the structural traits of dairy animals entered in livestock shows and have been an associate judge for several years. Judging offers an amazing opportunity to grow your skills. I am really fortunate when
opportunities present themselves — my family helps out. “Dairy farming is a brilliant career where I can create something for myself and not be a rocket scientist. The judging comes into play with my own herd too. I had failed before but learned things. Now when a cow comes on heat, and I am looking for a bull, I know what I am looking for in the way of functional dairy animals. “I grew up with Friesians coming from a Dutch family. They are like water to a duck for us dutchies. Dairy farming is a very cool occupation. I spent time at Lincoln, where I learnt about farm management practices. A lot is getting stuck in, doing it, making mistakes and learning. I don’t know everything, but I am getting a better handle on it every day.”

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES
CHILDHOOD CREATES OPPORTUNITY BY ANN VAN ENGELEN
TRACEY TOPP GREW UP ON A LARGE SHEEP FARM AND HAS DEVELOPED HER LOVE FOR THE INDUSTRY AND WOOL INTO A SMALL FAMILY BUSINESS.
“G
rowing up in the 1970s to 1990s on a sheep farm was a very special thing,”
says Tracey. “That era was when people were sheep farming on quite substantial farms. As children, we helped with lambing, docking, and other jobs. I was the little lamb girl and during the Christmas holidays, we would be haymaking and shearing. My brother is the third generation to own the farm, and he still has sheep and grazes dairy heifers to support the industry. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school. Girls were taught to type and sew and didn’t have a lot of
career direction. I travelled overseas and worked in retail. I met my husband and he has a contracting business, so I then worked in his office. “Sixteen years ago, I started looking for decent wool clothing for our two boys. I asked friends where to buy woollen socks, and they replied ‘you won’t find them’. I was shocked and started phoning manufacturers. None made woollen socks anymore because of the effects synthetic importing had on our home-grown industries. “One factory still had the machinery, but rules and regulations had changed when importing started. It wasn’t viable to manufacture woollen socks anymore.

I asked them to make a line for me, and they obliged. My husband shouted me a little square advertisement in a baby magazine and I started Cosy Toes, based from home using a website . “I had to eventually find a new manufacturer and added blankets and merino clothing to the range. I never realised how many people don’t have wool knowledge. “My interest came from my childhood with grandad and father always talking about wool. There is not much positive information around now, so I started the We Love NZ Wool Facebook page. It is a place to share what is going on in the country and bring everyone interested in wool together. We are spreading good Kiwi stories and the importance of our products to the world to help farmers know that their wool is important. “It is all to help people because life is about relationships. Once you get people talking, it triggers good memories. One story is the pound for a pound. In the 1950s wool boom in New Zealand, the saying is farmers received a pound of money for a pound of wool. We want to remind people sheep farmers are important. Shepherds are hard workers and care for their animals. It would be great to get them back in the foreground of people’s minds. We would love designers to use New Zealand wool more. The processing technology is world-class, and we have a really good reputation here in New Zealand. “Cavalier Bremworth is now solely making strong wool carpets, which is a huge industry boost. Mark Warren runs a large sheep station in Hawke’s Bay and recently published an interesting
book called Many a muddy morning. Barbie Cassidy is in her 80s and owns VIP Dog Beds and manufactures beds and pillows out of wool. “The natural fibre is healthier, warmer, flame resistant and breathable. My granny gave me two single wool blankets when I was two years old and they are still as good as new. “Babies can’t regulate their body temperature so wool blankets are best. Synthetics send microfibres into the waterways with each wash. “The plastic ends up in the ocean, the fish eat it, and we eat the fish. It isn’t good at all. “Having grown up on a sheep farm, was the best upbringing ever. I loved it, and it didn’t matter if it was cold, you still drenched the ewes and always had a dog — we made our own fun. The more pet lambs I had to feed, the better, even though dad’s stress was trying to mother them up. “We learned to drive on a tractor and would get it stuck and dad couldn’t work out how and I loved grandad’s stories. Coming up with ways to use wool has been a great experience. Working with NZ manufacturers is fantastic. “I aim for a 70 per cent minimum of merino in my products as some items need a small amount of other materials for strength and comfort. Touching one person with our knowledge can make a big difference to our industry. “Farmers connecting together on our We love NZ Wool Facebook page is a great way to get their stories told. We have really good memories and hope children on farms today understand how lucky they are.”
Tracey would like consumers to get an understanding of how healthy and long-lasting woollen products are as a natural fibre FIVE YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT HAS ARRIVED!

ADVERTORIAL
Coenzyme Q10 for energy Our mitochondria are our cell engines that take the energy from food and change this into the energy our bodies need. Free radicals can damage delicate cell structures causing less energy to be made. Some diseases can damage mitochondria. Studies show that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome weakens mitochondria resulting in significantly less energy than in healthy people. The result is always tiredness but other symptoms are determined by the type of disease. For example, in MS, mitochondrial changes occur, leading to nerve myelin damage. The first step to improve energy is to add coenzyme Q10. Be aware that most of the CoQ10 on the market is low-cost semi-synthetic material. I prefer high-grade, naturally fermented material. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a good, cheap CoQ10. There are several reasons why some need extra coenzyme Q10. The most common is those taking statin cholesterol-lowering medication. The most common side effects are tiredness, mood issues and muscle weakness and pain. Mostly due to the fact they reduce circulating CoQ10. Interestingly, the maker of the topselling statin in the world holds patents
to combine CoQ10 with statins. They just have never made it. Perhaps this would reduce the financial viability of the drug? Some health problems, especially autoimmune disease, can increase demand for CoQ10. Additionally, our ability to produce sufficient CoQ10 diminishes with age causing tiredness. These help to increase energy output, support flagging energy processes and reduce free radical damage by actively targeting the free radicals that damage delicate energy systems. A combination of a good diet and these beneficial supplements can make a real difference in life quality for those with low energy. Most people feel a difference within a few months. Farm awards open Waikato farmers and growers are encouraged to get their entries in now for the region’s 2021 Ballance Farm Environment Awards — no matter where they are at on their journey.
Mark and Felicity Brough, the 2020 Regional Supreme Winners in the Waikato Ballance Farm Environment Awards
Farmers and growers are invited to showcase, benchmark and improve their operations through the constructive BFEA process where agribusiness professionals provide feedback, recommendations and commendations. The New Zealand Farm Environment Trust is working with the Waikato BFEA committee to operate a regional awards programme in 2020/21. The committee has secured independent funding, which enables it to run a Waikato BFEA programme. The remainder of the regional programmes are on hold as a result of Covid-19 disruptions. “The judges take a holistic approach to the feedback and award allocation process, making it a great opportunity to have your farming or growing business independently evaluated,” says regional committee chair, Matt Holwill. “The BFEA process is an incredibly valuable way to benchmark yourself against others in the region. We
encourage everyone in the industry to give it a go. In 2020, we had a great crop of entrants, all at different stages along their farming and growing journey, and with different reasons for entering. “The overwhelming feedback we get from entrants is that they get a huge amount of benefit out of the process.” The 2021 Waikato programme includes the launch of a new award that celebrates the achievements of Waikato catchment groups. “The purpose of the new Catchment Group Award is to celebrate the achievements of catchment groups within the Waikato,” says Matt. “Profiling the catchment award recipient is a great way to showcase what can be achieved when local communities work together and take ownership of localised catchment issues.” Entries close on October 30. For more information and to enter, go to the trust’s website nzfeatrust.org.nz.

Migrant workers welcome
11
DairyNZ warmly welcomes a government announcement that means some skilled migrant dairy farm employees will be able to return to New Zealand from overseas. “This is a real breakthrough for migrants who meet the criteria and gives their farm employers certainty to plan for the future, said DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle. “We thank the government for listening to the sector’s calls for these highly skilled people to return. They contribute to the dairy sector’s success, are invaluable for their experience and skills, and are important for training incoming Kiwi staff. The visa holders and their families will follow all border control processes and go into quarantine or managed isolation before rejoining their communities here. DairyNZ has been working with the government since the beginning of the Covid-19 lockdown. The government did provide a six-month extension on the employer-assisted temporary work visas due to expire by the end of 2020, which was also very welcome news for dairy farmers. Dr Mackle strongly advised migrants and their employers to understand the rules and confirm if they meet the exemption criteria before submitting applications. “We don’t want to see additional stress, costs and disappointment for this group of patient people, said Dr Mackle. “While it is great news that some migrants can come home, DairyNZ acknowledges some migrants and their

employers will not meet the criteria. I am sure they will be disappointed, and we thank them for the contribution they have made to our dairy sector. “Jobs continue to remain in the dairy sector, and the GoDairy campaign
launched by DairyNZ aims to attract Kiwis whose jobs were impacted by Covid-19. The challenge is it can’t happen with a flick of the switch. “The sector needs a mixture of skills on-farm, both experienced people and
new recruits. It will take several years to build the knowledge of new Kiwi farm staff to take over the migrant workforce. DairyNZ encourages interested people to find out more about the opportunities available at godairy.co.nz.

AG CONTRACTORS MoCo promises speed and efficiency by Andy Bryenton
The spring season’s riotous pasture growth provides a narrow window of opportunity. That means success goes to the farmer or contractor who can efficiently mow and condition the biggest acreage possible in the shortest time, while still producing highend hay and silage. It’s a problem John Deere have been putting research and development time into, as they engineered the new R310R Mower Conditioner (MoCo for short). This implement builds on a legacy of successful mowing and conditioning tools from the big green and yellow brand, but with advancements to deliver greater efficiency, speed and performance in the field; all while
offering added manoeuvrability. By the figures, the R310R is a 3.1m, vertical fold, rear-mounted MoCo, built with today’s manoeuvrable 100hp tractors in mind. Speaking on the release of the new MoCo this October, John Deere Tactical Marketing Manager, Fraser Scott, said the R310R would deliver better-quality forage at a lower cost, to grow profitability

Beat the Rush!
John Deere’s new MoCo has landed in New Zealand just in time for the busiest part of spring, so if you’re looking to literally make hay while the sun shines, it’s well worth a look
in an increasingly competitive and challenging production environment. “Over recent years both contractor and farming customers have told us they need a MoCo that can perform in tight paddocks and manoeuvre through narrow gateways and lanes. As a vertical fold machine, the R310R meets both of those requirements,” Scott said. “Oblique folding at 126 degrees and a pivoting point close to the tractor also results in better weight balance and enhances stability, including when the MoCo is being road transported. In fact, the machine can cover long transport distances at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour, where local laws permit.”
Not content with just upping the speed and performance of the MoCo in the field, John Deere has also added quick-change knives for ease of maintenance, along with bolted-on skid plates to further decrease downtime when it’s time for servicing. The R310R can be outfitted with a tine impeller conditioner or rubber conditioning rollers to make it suited to a broad range of applications, from highdensity crops to those that need to be handled more gently. That versatility carries over to the way it handles terrain, with a long-range of travel allowing the MoCo to ‘float’ over undulations and bumps, boasting adjustable hydraulic suspension.

Leading scientist shifts climate parameters by Andy Bryenton
Farmers and rural contractors economically threatened by laws based on methane and its role in climate change have a new reason for hope, as a leading climate scientist makes calls to downgrade the threat level of this commonly occurring gas. The implications for carbon taxation are enormous.
Science is a fluid process, where theories can be questioned and changed rapidly. Now one of the core problems of climate change has been reassessed, leading to questions for lawmakers
step back from the whole idea that methane is a significant problem until the science is settled enough to determine whether it is or not. There should be
BU
insisting that the European Union drop the official figure of ‘28 times more potent than CO2’ and accept the new calculation he backs. The implications for Kiwi lawmakers are just as vast, and in an election year, even more, pressing. “That is critical information to New Zealand, where the government and even farming industry groups have accepted the notion that methane is 28 times stronger than CO2,” says Robin Grieve. “The potential cost to farmers to work with this concept was going to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Reducing the ratio by 400% shows just how wrong everyone has been. Yet they were willing to advise policymakers to put farming under huge pressure to conform. “Adopting Allen’s proposed system of accounting for methane will slash 26,000 tonnes off New Zealand’s carbon emissions overnight — approximately a 32% reduction.” FARM is demanding the government, the relevant agencies and the industry
T, WORK, P EA , L Y
AY
With debate already raging over the balance between reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the necessity for a robust rural economy, the recalculation of the impact of methane on the climate by one of the leading scientists in the field has provided rhetorical ammunition for the pro-agriculture lobby. Spokesperson for Kiwi agricultural science advocacy group, Facts About Ruminant Methane (FARM), Robin Grieve, says that it is ‘almost unbelievable’ that one of the leading methane scientists in the world, Dr Myles Allen, has adjusted the calculation of methane harm from 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2) to a mere seven times. Dr Allen is no climate change denier, and neither is he a poorly informed secondary source. The respected doctor is head of the Climate Dynamics group at the University of Oxford’s Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics Department. He leads the world in computer simulation modelling of climate change and has won many scientific awards for his work. Now, FARM reports that he’s
no financial imposition on farmers for ruminant methane emissions based on guesswork and uncertain science, they say.

Top of the class performance by Andy Bryenton
When it’s time to bale, speed and efficiency are of the utmost importance, allowing more ground to be covered quickly and more bales stacked away before fickle weather deals out its usual blows. Ease of maintenance is key to this efficiency in many situations, and that’s one of the reasons Claas have developed their new Rollant 520 range, replacing the 374 and 375 at Europe’s Agritechnica. Here in New Zealand, the cutting edge of Claas baling technology is represented by their Variant range, which utilises the same kind of advanced engineering as the new metal from the EU. There are multiple options across the range, suitable for farming and contracting operations big and small. The base model of the international Claas range employs a system of stub augers and underfloor tines to convey material into the chamber. However, the Variant in NZ boasts an upgrade to Claas’ Roto Feed technology, boosting intake with its advanced spiral rotor layout. A very popular addition to the range is the Roto Cut system, which employs a series of mechanised knives to cut crop materials before they’re ingested. This optional chopping mechanism has 14 knives, with a theoretical cut length of 70mm. The knives have individual protection against foreign objects to
prevent blunting and chipping while at work in the field. Bale shape and density are under complete control with Claas. It only takes six seconds for a finished bale to be deployed from the back of the implement from the time the door starts to open. That’s a figure more impressive than the drop-top convertible speed of some supercars, during which a uniformly formed, easy-to-handle bale is deposited. Roto Cut knives are automatically deactivated at the end of each bale and automatically cleaned after every fifth bale. Blockages are easily cleared from the cab, with the push of a button, adding to another aspect Claas has not left to chance; operator comfort. Claas has continued to impress with its bigger, more tech-heavy range of self-wrapping balers, but even the

STOP RUST with It is more than wool which keeps sheep dry. Prolan NZ has enhanced the use of lanolin in sheep’s wool to manufacture environmentally-friendly industrial lanolin lubricants, corrosion inhibitors and anti-seize greases, which stop rust. “Sheep n a Can”
O
ften it’s a losing battle to fight corrosion on your valuable farming equipment, whether it develops from manure, dirt, sand or simply long-term storage, says Murray Shaw of Prolan NZ.
“More often than not quadbikes are replaced because of corrosion issues, while the engine and everything else still runs well. Therefore, it’s not hard to double the bike’s life and increase its resale value.”
“In the NZ agricultural market Prolan is sprayed on tractors, quadbike and 4WD chassis, harvesters, feeders, chains, conveyors, irrigation spraying equipment, fertiliser spreaders, loaders, trucks and electrical hardware.
Plus agricultural fertiliser companies are also realising a coating of Prolan’s NEW Extreme product protects truck and fertiliser loader’s chassis operating in harsh environments, says Murray.
“Once Prolan Enduro medium grade is sprayed on the underside of quad bikes it slows down deterioration and provides longterm protection. “Bikes can be waterblasted after use and the Prolan stays on. Many quadbike frames rust out within three years with no protection.

Lightwire bringing first-time broadband After successfully completing the second phase of the government’s Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI2) in June, Lightwire’s success has been rewarded with an extension to the project. Lightwire is to continue as an official rural broadband partner of Crown Infrastructure Partners (CIP). The extension will see the Hamilton-based company provide wireless broadband to an additional 287 remote households, which are some of the hardest to reach in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions. It will be the first time these households will have access to wireless broadband. The goal of the RBI2 project is to provide broadband to 99.8% of all New Zealanders, and as the 2021 project end date draws closer, the target too gets nearer and nearer. More than 84,000 rural households and businesses have now received broadband from different partners around the country. Moreover, it hasn’t just supported the growth of rural communities. It has helped give nationwide wireless providers the resources to enhance their own business models. RBI2 has helped Lightwire bring its total network to close to 7,000 customers across rural Waikato and BOP. In turn, it’s expanded the company’s coverage
areas, improving customer service capacity, and assisting the growth of innovative wireless technology. Mike Cook, Head of Rural at Lightwire, has said that projects like RBI2 have been important to the development and long-term focus of the company. “What’s extremely exciting for the team at Lightwire is our team’s continuous improvement — particularly looking at our internal engineers’ processes and how we can build more efficiently and in a timely fashion. We are unique where we can react quickly, make quick decisions, and like other providers can get stuff done. We’re looking at new technology that’s future-proofed, for the continued demand that our range of customers require of our services.” Cook also says the improvement of wireless technology is necessary to support a growing number of Kiwi households and businesses in our ‘new normal’. “We’re seeing more and more

Kiwi farmer beats the world by Andy Bryenton
A kiwi crop farmer is standing by his trusty machinery as the linchpin of his success, as he brings home a Guinness world record for massive arable land production. Eric Watson, from Wakanui near Ashburton, has broken his own Guinness World Record for the highest average wheat yield of 17.398 tonnes a hectare. Working with his wife Maxine, he set the previous record of 16.791 tonnes with feed wheat in 2017. Irrigated wheat yields in New Zealand average about 12 tonnes a hectare. He puts his success down to precision farming, with the right tools. Eric defines ‘precision farming’ in New Zealand in many ways, particularly in his use of machinery and implement technology at the cutting edge. When asked how to win a world record, he’d answer that it comes from making small incremental gains across many facets of the farming business. One example; through a combination of
operator control and advanced software, like Case IH’s AFS Harvest Command system, he leaves little to waste on the deep soils of his coastal property. “That new automation; it’s quicker than the human. We always think we can beat computers, but you can’t beat that. The command system knows what to do before you even see it on the screen,” he says. However, it’s less driver-intensive than the machinery of yesteryear. “It does work extremely well. It just takes a bit of getting used to, and you get a bit bored because you don’t have to do much. You run auto settings, and you’ve just got to sit there.” As a long-time Case IH customer, Eric says the red brand’s latest technology is a sizeable step ahead on one of his original machines, an old International

1460. A favourite feature in his Case IH Axial-Flow 250 Series combine is the CVT rotor drive technology, which increases efficiency and reduces the chance of crop blockage. When you spend as much time in the seat as Eric, it’s a pleasure not having to get out to unblock it. Eric enjoys a productivity gain, no matter where it comes from. For his recent wheat record, he switched wheat variety and went from solid urea

to liquid form to improve spreading. He also swears by using a tracked unit to prevent soil compaction, knowing that soil health is another incremental gain area for maximum growth next cycle. Ever-modest, Eric quietly admits to being a bit blown away by his latest yield gain. “However, you’re always monitoring and trying a few new things, including a different crop as well.”
