Although there appeared to be minimal impact on farm pasture and drinking water outside of the volcano’s immediate surrounding area, reviewing farm preparedness in the event of future eruptions is an opportunity to put a plan in place. GNS Science head volcanologist Gill Jolly said a future eruption could have wide ranging impacts across the central North Island. “It would depend on two main factors — size of eruption and wind direction at time of eruption.” Dr Jolly said the ash from the Ruapehu eruptions in 1995 and 1996 was deposited as far north as Rotorua on one occasion and out towards Hawke’s Bay on another. SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress

How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Gardening grants for rural schools up for grabs

by Denise Gunn

Rural Women New Zealand (RWNZ) and Farmlands have teamed up for the third year to give away gardening grants to six North Island rural schools Each winning school will receive $2,000 in prize money from the proceeds of Farmlands Ladies’ Nights, to be used to set up, or further develop, a rural school garden or orchard. Last year RWNZ and Farmlands presented cheques for road safety initiatives to schools in Ruatoki, Matakohe, Elstow-Waihou, Manakau and Kai Iwi. In 2010, 120 applications were received to erect shade sails in school playgrounds. Located just outside of Te Aroha, Elstow-Waihou School has a roll of 121 children. The six-teacher school is built on a crossroad with a 100kmph speed limit set on those roads. Elstow-Waihou School principal Shelly Good said the $2,000 grant was received in March this year. “With this grant money, the school has had four signs made, and placed them on the four roads leading to the crossroad,” she said. Television and radio cooking personality Annabelle White will tour the North Island as guest star at the Farmlands Ladies’ Nights events in October, providing a mixture of cooking tips and humour. “We’re delighted to be able to partner with Farmlands once again to give away gardening grants from funds raised at these events, said Rural Women NZ national president Liz Evans. “There’s a magic about planting seeds and growing your own fruit and veges.

“We’re keen to encourage children to learn the skills for what can become an enjoyable hobby and a way of providing healthy food for families.” Winning schools will also receive a copy of A Good Harvest — Recipes from the Gardens of Rural Women New Zealand, as well as gardening equipment, soil nutrients and seeds. Dates for the Farmlands Ladies’ Nights and application forms for the ‘Grow Your Own’ North Island rural school gardening grants can be found at www.ruralwomen.org.nz. Grant applications close on November 2.

eter has been extra busy working his 30 acre block near Matangi this winter while simultaneously training to represent New Zealand at the London Paralympics. It’s the fourth time he has competed at the Paralympics, amassing a large collection of medals and world records in shot put, javelin, discus and pentathlon. It was always Peter’s ambition to be a farmer, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather who both ran Angus studs. But a quad bike accident in 1989, in which he suffered a broken neck, seemed to end that dream. After months in hospital he was faced with rebuilding his life, and farming from a wheelchair didn’t seem like a great option. “I was brought up on a farm,” he says. “I went to Massey and Ruakura for a few years. was to go farming, but I didn’t think I could after the accident.” But his discovery of athletics provided another road to achievement and gave him confidence. “Sport was a reason to get fit,” he says. “I competed full on for 17 odd years. My life was totally around sport. I’ve carved out a lifestyle I can do to avoid going nuts. That’s the reality of it.” Peter has achieved great success in paralympics and he says all the Games he has competed in are special. “Atlanta was the first. The first is the first and it’s always exciting. Sydney was like a home Games. In Athens I was the team captain.” He actually retired before the Beijing games, but the lure of competition has been too great, although days before flying off to London he admitted he was ‘too weary’ to be excited. Farm work is tiring for a disabled person. Peter and his wife Anna run a herd of 70 cattle and a small mob of sheep, leasing extra grazing land. Ironically he uses a modified quad bike to get around his block, which fortunately is pretty flat. Peter says he has to be realistic about what he can and can’t do. “The main thing is I don’t do as much as I could before. That’s why I have a little block. I wouldn’t be able to work on a hill farm. I have no balance so I would just slide off the seat. I can patch a fence here and there. But I can’t dig, for a start. Mostly I get people to give me a hand or get a contractor in. It’s a lot about thinking things through before you do anything. Assessing the risks. Sometimes you have to just get on and do it. But you need to be a bit smarter.”

discovery of athletics provided “Hisanother road to achievement and gave him confidence ”

Peter says he is not unique. He knows of other farmers who have continued on the land despite suffering debilitating injuries. He has been in touch with a young man who broke his neck recently and is still determined to go farming. Peter is happy if he can provide some inspiration. Apart from his Paralympic exploits, Peter has also coached the Wheel Blacks. He’s previously been named Paralympian of the Year and was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Years Honours List in 2005. So, after all his achievements, will London be his last Paralympics as a competitor? Will he be there in Rio? “You never say never,” he laughs. “I might take up bowls or dressage. It depends how silly I feel.”

From farm life to fashion and photography by Julia West

A new art and fashion magazine called Collectif has recently been launched by two young women from the Waikato/King country

C

ousins Laura Kay from Waitomo and Sophie Peacocke from Raglan grew up on farms and have been ‘running around the backyard together’ since they were children. They were encouraged to be creative with lots of dress-up box occasions and the two girls “always dreamed of creating a fashion publication and doing it together,” says Laura. “We’ve always been friends. We’re both creative. Both studied Fine Arts, and have always collaborated in some way,” adds Sophie. Laura finished her Fine Arts degree at Massey University in Wellington last year where she focussed on photography, film and drawing, while Sophie is in her final year of a Graphic Design degree at Canterbury University. The decision to start Collectif happened over the phone. “Each of us simultaneously figured out that this dream would now be possible — and the manifesto of Collectif was born,” says Laura. “The magazine is a collection of things that

Most chronic diseases have an inflammatory component. In some cases inflammation is the cause of the problem and in others it is part of the problem. For example, autoimmune arthritis is caused by the immune system starting to attack joint tissues. With the more common rheumatoid arthritis the attack is against the membranes that contain synovial fluid. The body then tries to remedy the autoimmune attack by initiating an inflammatory response. Unfortunately, the problem is one that cannot be repaired and this leads to a permanent state of elevated inflammation. This prolonged inflammatory attack then causes cocktails of oxygen and nitrogen free radicals and the combination of these, plus destructive inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins and cytokines cause joint tissue destruction. The outcome is a progressive loss of joint function with pain, stiffness, swelling and disfiguration. There are about 70 autoimmune diseases and these typically attack specific types of tissue. In arthritis, the joint is attacked while lupus attacks connective tissue. Some like polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) attack muscles, and with others, including psoriasis and vitiligo, it is the skin that is attacked. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a bizarre disease where the attack is launched against cell energy structures especially the mitochondria which produce energy. In every case, the inflammation is an attempt of the body to heal the problem it actually caused resulting in more destruction, swelling and pain. Nutritional therapy to lower inflammation is usually very complementary alongside medical treatment. When I create anti-inflammatory programmes I target food compounds that can lower cytokine levels and generally reduce immune system generated inflammation. Many of these are also potent antioxidants which appear to directly lower cytokine levels and additionally mop up the excess free radicals these produce. Most antioxidants exert some anti-inflammatory function but the most important are the OPC’s, usually extracted from grape seeds, resveratrol, compounds from acai berries, most dark berries and spices especially turmeric. The key is to use the most potent extracts at the right levels. For example, with PMR I target about 400mg of pure OPC, 100mg of resveratrol and 50-100mg of turmeric extracts. There are many plant foods that are anti-inflammatory including tropical fruit, especially pineapples and papaya, pomegranate (as juice) and ginger. If you have any chronic inflammatory problem give me a call as many people have been helped by adopting the strategies mentioned here. John Arts is the founder of Abundant Health Ltd. “Their daily progress is a huge reward.” Anne took on her first Kaimanawa when she saw a group of foals in a paddock. “I fell in love with one of them and it didn’t take me long to put him on a float and take him home.” Anne has since worked with many semi-feral horses, trucked from sales in Gisborne and Northland to her Waikato property. She said although these horses were often big and strong, they were fun to work with. “I took one horse from feral to full-wire hunting from about March to the end of the hunt season. “He was fabulous.”

Waikato Farming Lifestyles September 2012 When Anne heard there was to be another Kaimanawa horse muster in 2010, she also discovered that although there were a number of people wanting to take horses, they lacked the skills or facilities to handle them.

Anne is also currently working a yearling, Theodore, from this year’s muster. “He’s a sponsored pony paid for by some people who live very locally,” said Anne. “They already have one Kaimanawa pony, didn’t have space for another but still wanted to save one.”

Anne suggested to horse trainer Simone Frewin that she could either work horses for owners, or horses that the Kaimanawa Wild Horse Welfare Trust held ownership of.

When the ponies first arrive on Anne’s property, she spends time with them in the yards.

In June 2010, after a visit from the Trust’s inspectors, two Kaimanawa ponies, Rupert and D’Arcy, were delivered to Anne’s property.

“I go to the yards as many times in the day as possible, taking food each time,” she said. “They will usually approach and eat from an outstretched hand on the first or second day.”

Rupert was a four-year-old stallion when he arrived and Anne worked hard to get him to the point where he could be gelded. “I had to be quite careful with him because although he was very greedy, he’d take a mouthful of food and then attack.” “I had to blindfold him so the vet could get near enough to give him the anaesthetic,” she said.

Getting a halter on the ponies for the first time is the next step and often requires differing methods. Photo: Beth Judson Anne riding Kaimanawa horse Oliver

Anne said removing his testosterone solved a lot of the problems and she has since backed him, broken him to harness and is working with him on a regular basis. He also made an appearance at the National Fieldays to give a demonstration in hoofball. “Now he’s so laid back he can be hard to get a reaction from.”

Kaimanawa horse, Rupert, arrived on Anne MacCaulay’s Waikato property following the June 2010 muster. Anne has since backed him and broken him to harness

D’Arcy has just turned four years of age and has been shown in-hand by Anne. She plans to start him under saddle this summer.

9

“One of them this year I worked with in the yard and used a long pole and a rope. “The other went up the chute and was haltered like that.” “It just depends on the pony,” she said. The ponies are then handled and taught to yield to the rope, lead, tie up, and pick up their feet. Backing and starting them under saddle follows. Anne’s experience working with feral ponies has taught her how to read horses and ponies well, understand what they are thinking and how they could react in different situations. “Working with a feral pony is the best and fastest way to learn how horses and ponies react to us and read us,” she said.

Stimulating soil biological activity — how and why? Part 2 Dr Bert Quin, fertiliser and soil fertility consultant

I concluded Part 1 of this article by asking whether increasing the rate of cycling of soil organic matter — in other words, increasing soil microbial activity — can increase pasture or crop production, and if so, how can it be done? In an ideal situation, where plantavailable levels of all nutrients in the soil are already optimum for plant growth, simply increasing soil microbial activity is unlikely to increase production. But few soils have optimum nutrient levels all of the time. A high proportion of many nutrients are either held in forms in the soil that are difficult for plant roots to access, or are easily leached out of the soil. Simply swamping the soil with more and more nutrient to overcome these problems is an expensive process, and can cause harm to the environment. Soil microbes are the drivers of nutrient cycling. They are present in three main forms — bacteria, fungi and archaea. They act as decomposers, breaking down plant,

animal and microbial residues, releasing plant-available nutrients in the process. This gives plant roots far more frequent ‘chances’ to obtain nutrients. Think of them as changing a bank deposit account where the interest is paid annually into one where it is paid monthly or daily. There is less chance of running short of cash in the latter case. Bacteria are easily the most numerous. Some fix atmospheric N to make it available to plants. Archaea have both similarities to and differences from bacteria. Some produce methane, others nitrify ammonia. Fungi are more closely related to plants. Some, such as mycorrhizal fungi, exist in mutually beneficial associations with plants. The plant receives soil nutrients via the fungus, and the plant supplies sugars to the fungus. Soils contain an incredibly diverse range and number of microbes. The total

RASS G Y T I QUAL = TOCK S Y T I QUAL

fresh weight of organisms in a temperate grassland soil such as New Zealand’s can be as high as 50 tonnes per hectare, up to five times the fresh weight of pasture foliage at any one time! A cubic centimeter — about the size of a sugar cube — can contain 100 million microbes, not to mention a hundred or so mites and nematodes, and the odd earthworm, beetle and centipede. How do they get there? The smallest — the microbes — are naturally distributed very easily, in wind, in and on animals and vehicles. Because of this, there are very few proven cases where artificial introduction has proven necessary or beneficial. The classic exception to this is the bacteria which colonise the clover root nodules, making it possible for the all-important fixation of atmospheric N. Because this bacterium lives only in the root nodule, it is unlikely to survive in a soil where there is no clover. So like clover was itself, it had to be introduced. Some companies promote microbial mixes that are claimed to supply valuable microbes that are missing from the soil. In my observation, few if any of these

are identified, let alone demonstrated to be not already present, and beneficial if supplied artificially. In my view, if a soil has inadequate biological activity, it is not because a certain microbe is not present, it is because some man-made influence is preventing it from flourishing. This can include many things, such as pugging and lack of aeration induced by over-stocking, excessive use of fertiliser (especially N) and agricultural chemicals, and poor or excessive drainage. A vast array of soil microbes are competing with each other for optimum microsites to live in the soil. Removing the abundance of these sites makes it harder for microbes to survive. Simply adding a few more microbes is unlikely to help. Earthworms are different. They are much larger, physically vulnerable, and are far less likely to survive transfer from one farm to another, say in soil on an animal’s hoof than are microbes. Once introduced to a new site, studies have shown than the most useful pastoral soil earthworms colonise new ground at the rate of only 2-10 metres per year. They do need our help. It amazes me how few conversions of forestry land to dairy farming bother to include introduction of surface, shallow and deep earthworm species as part of the conversion process. “I will be holding two information days in Memp This 3 se the Northland area late September. However appearance medicine consists of simple, non-surgical procedures that help to wind the clock back a little, and really, who doesn’t want that? The results are very subtle and natural. Appearance medicine is the title used for procedures such as Botox(r) and dermal fillers (Juvederm(r))(Allergan

Appearance medicine has been around for many years and at Caci they are the trusted skincare and appearance medicine professionals. Before treatment begins every client requires a consultation to discuss their individual needs and any questions they might have. At Caci, Botox(r) is used in selected areas of the face to relax the muscles, giving a younger, refreshed appearance by reducing the visible signs of stress and ageing. Caci also uses Botox(r) for the treatment of excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis). Juvederm(r), the filler used at Caci, has been chosen for its smooth and natural look. Forestry Market Report Allan Laurie MNZIF Laurie Forestry Ltd

A year of little change in log markets continues with prices remaining in a positive to neutral space. I have stated several times recently it is good to see wood fibre commodities holding their own when other segments are generally weak to softening in terms of net pricing

Much of this ‘continuing steady as she goes’ market status within wood fibre commodities can be attributed to China. Demand for both log and lumber has remained steady, prices are generally holding firm and supply from other sources is also stable. Log price settlements in China for August sales have been holding steady with the key market indicator A-grade sitting at around the USCIF$130 per cubic metre mark. Market positioning seems to be the order of the day with sales known to have mostly ranged within US$4 of the market indicated price. The price settlement variation appears related to ‘jockeying for position’ by NZ sellers. atment Chinese buyers are definitely ed forbecoming more selective about quality. rdablePruned logs have hit a high US$160 per ble. cubic metre for the upper end of the am atquality range meaning 40cm+ small end entary

Total Pacific Rim softwood supplies in to China have been slightly ahead of demand with log yard inventories building closer to 3mil cubic metres. At current consumption levels this is getting uncomfortably close to three months supply. However supply volumes are expected to drop in August and September as demand picks up in India. In the last couple of weeks we have noted a higher level enquiry for the favoured S30 framing logs but price upward negotiations remain off the agenda, at least for buyers. Shipping has continued to be a melee of supply and demand talk with

the word ‘shorting’ coming in to the jargon. This apparently means a level of collusion between shipping company owners to short supply the southern hemisphere market in an attempt to drive costs back up. For the moment this little game play has not impacted with sufficient vessels seeking cargo. Some of this appears to be related to the fertiliser season with extra ships in rotation looking for backloads to the Northern Hemisphere. Some lumber exporters have reported container pricing has also stabilised which appears to have coincided with a small increase in CIF settlements, allowing them to record some badly needed margin on recent consignments. Long may it continue. Most of us involved in exports continue to complain bitterly about the higher than average US Dollar exchange rate. At a prevailing and persistent US$0.81c it is unlikely we will see anything wildly exciting in forest grower returns in the immediate term.

Overall we are continuing to say this year will remain stable in price and demand terms internationally. However overall wood fibre demand remains good and prices are holding at a time when other commodities are softening. Thus it is has never been more timely to remember the only way forward for climate, country and the planet is to get out there and plant more trees — please!

Wheels open up access to Mongolia

George and Denise are well-used to riding motorbikes. George often rides off-road and has been on a couple of trail rides in New Zealand. Denise regularly rides a four-wheeler around the farm.

A motorcycle adventure into outer Mongolia revealed the vastness of the landscape for Mangaweka sheep and beef farmers George and Denise McNie

With George riding a Yamaha WR450 and Denise sharing driving duties with three other women in a full-sized dune buggy powered by a 1600c Hyundai motor, the couple covered a total of 2700kms in 16 days during a trip organised by Britton Adventures. George had read up on some of the history surrounding Genghis Khan and was keen to see some of the Mongolian empire. After taking part in a motorbike ride in Northland with Britton Adventures he found out the organisers, Mike Britton and Angela Bruce, were planning a tour to outer Mongolia and decided to make a booking. “It was an amazing trip,” said George. “The WR450 was perfect for the job,” said George. “The

Although there were some sealed roads on the journey, most of the tracks were sand and dirt. The trip also covered open grassland, lots of rocks and some river crossings.

The age range of riders on the Mongolia tour varied from 13 to 62 years.

George said the vastness of the countryside had to be seen to be believed. “The whole 2700kms we rode, we never had to open a gate.” Both the motorbikes and the buggy also worked as a magnet for meeting the local people.

George said travelling through Mongolia by motorbike was a great way to see the country.

George said the locals wanted to sit on the buggy and have photos taken. They also liked the riders’ helmets.

“The riding is fairly flat but there are rocks, stock, sand, ruts and local traffic so the concentration levels have to be high.”

“They don’t use them so wanted to try them on.” There were many highlights and surprises during the tour.

Riders also had to keep a lookout for squirrel and marmot holes.

“We saw something nearly every day that blew you away,” said George.

More power to you When Can-am unleashed the 1000cc Outlander ATV on an unsuspecting world for 2012, the repercussions were felt throughout the offroad community Here was an exercise in engineering and power to rival the Bugatti Veyron in terms of opposition-crushing mathematics… up to and including a power to weight ratio which the Almighty himself wouldn’t sneeze at. From the factory floor the big Outlander churned out over 80 HP, delivered to the dirt by strikingly styled alloys and a re-engineered frame and chassis which tamed all that torque. Not that the Outlander couldn’t pop a wheelstand out of high range from a standing start… One of a select few vehicles to earn a coveted 5 out of 5 stars rating

“The Outlander 1000 has carved out a niche among competitive riders the world over” on ATV.com, the Outlander 1000 has carved out a niche among competitive riders the world over, blending raw grunt with technology to provide a visceral yet balanced riding experience. But at its heart the Outlander is still part of a practical family of working ATVs — complete with rugged racks and decking, generous ground clearance and hefty towing capacity. Its 800 and 500 ‘little brothers’ have proven great value for money for Kiwi ATV riders — especially working the land.

Now BRP, makers of Can-Am, have refined the big Outlander for a second generation, keeping its powerful Rotax heart and tweaking and sculpting the rest of the machine for an improved 2013 iteration. At the top of the new range sits the impressive MAX model, packed with features such as Fox adjustable air suspension, easy clip on clip off two-up seating (it can be switched out for a handy tool box in seconds) and the very clever visco-lok QE quick engagement front diff. This innovation moves power from a slipping front wheel to one with grip, navigating the fuel-injected Outlander through even the roughest terrain. Can-am’s entire range for 2013 benefits from the G2 chassis setup pioneered for the 2012 Outlander, and you can bet that BRP have built on the strengths (and customer

feedback) they’ve developed with the Outlander 1000. After all, just like the hugely powerful Veyron, Can-am’s flagship ATV is an exercise in excess which informs an entire new generation of vehicles. Check out the Outlander 1000 now — or any of the excellent ATV quads in the Can-am range.

Dairying Treating Calf scours! Rotagen and Vetsan the combined approach this spring!

Appropriate rehydration is essential and Rotagen can be used in conjunction with electrolytes or milk feeding.

Vetsan is a santiser and disinfectant that is effective against all major organisms including Rotavirus, Coronavirus, E Coli, Salmonella Sp and Cryptospordium. One of the major benefits of Vetsan is that it is a very safe product which can be sprayed around and over your calves without any affects to them and it is also non toxic to humans. Vetsan comes in two forms, one is a ready to use product and the other is a concentrate mixed at a 1to 4 ratio, Vetsan should be used with a fine nozzle or mist sprayer or it is suitable for use with a fogger.

Treating the calves with Rotagen is one part of the equation, reducing the effects of environmental contamination is also important in reducing the effects of an outbreak within your calves, this is where another Vetpak product Vetsan can help,

A litre of Vetsan will cover 36m2 compared to many products on the market only covering 3m2 per litre of product and Vetsan also has residual activity over 7-14 days meaning the product keeps working longer.

Calf scours may be all bad, but there’s a good option at hand for clients who end up battling with sick animals this spring The Rotagen Combo range remains unique as non-toxic, non-withhold vet only antibody treatment for calves affected by common pathogens like Rotavirus 6 and 10, Coronavirus, Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, and or E.coli (K99). New Zealand is the only country in the world where specific antibodies against specific pathogens — (Rotagen Combo) — is a registered animal remedy. The Rotagen Combo range is based on Globigen, a spray-dried egg yolk powder derived from vaccinated chickens which contains IgY’s specific to a particular organism — rotavirus 6 and 10, coronavirus, salmonella, cryptosporidium, and E.coli (K99). Globigen is made by vaccinating high health status flocks against a specific pathogen. The hen then passes maternal immunoglobulins from serum to the egg yolk which is collected, then spray-dried, heattreated and standardized to a determined IgY titre. This is then formulated into a Rotagen combination product by Vetpak here in NZ. Any Rotagen combination of the above IgY’s can be produced on request to meet a specific challenge. IgY antibodies provide a passive immunity effect in the gut in the same way bovine colostrum would. Studies show that

IgY’s successfully pass through the gastro -intestinal tract in an active form and are not altered by the digestive process. Their ability to bind to antigens is maintained within the local gut. As the Rotagen products are based on a local gut immunity provided by immunoglobulins, there is no issue with toxicity and no withholding period. The product can be used with calves of any age and treatment can be initiated at any stage of infection. It can be used to both prevent and treat specific calf scours. A recent addition to the range is Rotagen Crypto, a cryptosporidium specific treatment for calves. Approved by the ACVM as an aid in the prevention and treatment of calf scours caused by cryptosporidium, this is available as a stand-alone product without the addition of rotavirus. This is particularly useful in cases where the herd has been vaccinated for rotavirus, but the farm has a history of cryptosporidium parvum scours in their calves. Calves of any age or weight can be treated at the same dosage rate. For prevention, the recommended dose is 10 grams per calf per day for five days. For treatment, dose calves with 10 g twice daily for the first day, then 5 g twice daily for three to seven days.

The award-winning Clean Green Effluent System The Clean Green Effluent System, designed and produced in Southland by Lindsay Lewis, could be the future of dairy effluent disposal Featuring a small patented concretelined, double weeping wall, followed by 33,000 litre tanks, this system eliminates the risk of pond leakage and tendency of large storage ponds to smell, as well as increasing the life span of the pond.

Clean Green Effluent Company owner Lindsay Lewis said the system has a green water storage facility which significantly reduces the amount of water used by recycling green water for yard cleaning.

It was the low application rate that drew the support of Southland dairy farm owner Gary Swney. He found the cost of installing the system was significantly less than a large storage pond.

Mark Hamill installed the system on his Southland dairy farm four seasons ago and found his water usage has reduced to more than half the water take Environment Southland had allocated to his property.

Super low application rates ensured all nutrients would stay in the root base and be utilised. Pasture could then absorb nutrients from the

It’s great to finally see the sun shining and the grass growing. It has been a wet but a warm spring so far and unfortunately this is prime condition for all those nasty bugs that cause mastitis to thrive. There can be several causes of mastitis from environmental to mechanical. Consulting with your animal health professional (local vet) should be first on your list, at the same time ruling out your milking plant. Here are a few tips that may help you find some of the basic issues preventing your machine working at it’s peak: Weekly Checklist: 1. Check your milking liners — how old are they? Are there any split or twisted ones? Liners should be replaced at least every 2500 milkings. 2. Check all your pulse tubes on the milking claw — are there any cracked or split ones? 3. Check your claw bowl seals — are they cracked or split?

4. Check your claw bowls for cracks.

to your pulsation rate and ratio — only a machine test can pick this up. But it may help you isolate a pulsator that is not working. 7. If you have an accurate vacuum gauge, check your vacuum level is not too high. Vacuum may range from as low as 41 kpa on a low line set up to 45 kpa on some high lines, but this is best discussed with a trained milking machine technician. 8. If you have cup removers check that they are milking the cows out cleanly and not over milking or under milking your herd. 9. Get a machine test done at least annually. 10. Get your milking plant serviced annually or every 1500 hours.

5. Check the pulse tube leading to the claw for splits or cracks.

The smallest crack or split can cause problems and any of parts showing signs of wear should be replaced immediately.

6. While the milking machine is running place your fingers inside the teat cup (for a short period, 10 — 20 seconds) to check if the pulsation is working. Please note this is not an accurate guide

Hopefully these quick tips will help you isolate any small issues you may be having. Call your local Milfos Service Partner to get your shed booked in for a machine test and a milking plant service.

To build or renovate

Starting from scratch? by our building correspondent

The fact that the renovation went up two full stories and covered almost the entire inner city section, was moot. It was still a renovation, that you and I would have described as a complete new home. It is a vexed question in built up areas. But in rural New Zealand, for the most part, there is more flexibility. If you are building, then the first decision is obviously, where? It’s a decision that will last the life

of the house too. The location of a new home depends on a myriad factors, but as top priority, where is the sun, and where the prevailing wind? Warmth and shelter areas are a major factor that will have long term ramifications in energy use for heating and cooling. This is important for positioning the bedrooms as well as lounge and kitchen for maximum weather benefits.

I well remember a relative who had inherited an old villa in inner Auckland. It was dilapidated — past its use by date — but local council regulations were a mine field, should he demolish it and rebuild on the site. Protect your hearing with Bay Audiology Did you know that exposure to loud sounds such as power saws or chain saws for more than 30 seconds can cause irreversible hearing damage? Exposure to excessive noise is one of the main causes of hearing loss in New Zealand, and with many New Zealanders working in noisy workplace, hearing protection is extremely important. High noise levels are a hazard not only in workplaces. Dangerous noise levels occur in many recreational activities – including home renovations. Unfortunately there is little awareness of excessive noise as damaging. Noise-Induced Hearing Loss is often described with the four P’s: Painless, Progressive, Permanent and Preventable. Bay Audiology Waikato has a full hearing protection range, including customised hearing protection and will recommend the best solution for your individual needs. If you are worried about your hearing, initial hearing checks with Bay Audiology are free for those aged over 18. Where a loss is detected, a full diagnostic hearing test is performed by an Audiologist to diagnose the problem and develop a personalised solution for the client. Tamasin Richards, Waikato Clinician for Bay Audiology, says ‘The earlier the hearing assessment is undertaken, the better

Free

the outcome will be’ and recommends regular hearing checks from the age of 45. Bay Audiology is New Zealand’s largest private audiology service provider and has clinics in six convenient locations throughout the Waikato. Their strong team of highly trained professionals are dedicated to a client centred approach to preventative, diagnostic and rehabilitative solutions for hearing loss. All Bay Audiology clinics have ACC accreditation and employ Audiologists who are members of the New Zealand Audiology society to provide many of the comprehensive range of services they offer. Government subsidies are available including a subsidy for $511.11 per hearing aid from the Ministry of Health that is avaliable to all New Zealanders every six years. For those with hearing loss as a result of an injury, funding towards the cost of hearing aids may be avaliable from ACC, for those eligible. Bay Audiology also provides the option of interest free payment plans. “Hearing well is such an important part of staying active and social and makes a huge difference to people’s overall wellbeing” says Tamasin. An unprotected house may consume a lot of power to keep it comfortable so north-facing locations are favoured for the advantage of free solar warmth, while protected from cold winds from the south. Visit the land you intend to build on at different times of the day — and at night on different occasions and in different weathers. The environment may be very different on these occasions and this will give you some good input into your design requirements. Property is a major investment so consider carefully and choose wisely. While real estate agents offer thoughts, remember they are selling on commission, so make sure you get expert and independent advice. There is also the matter of permits and council regulations. Make sure you get the paper work done. Most builders want power and water supplies available on site — even if its from a neighbouring property.

There is an apparent trend growing, for home builders to assist by providing labour on site and of course, for DIY New Zealanders, the actual home construction might not be beyond the realms of possibility.

Protect your home from harmful UV rays. Retain your view. Cooler home for summer.

Site access comes next. A concrete drive may be your first construction project, to provide access for the construction crew and materials. Check with your local authority and plumber for which sewage systems are approved for your area.

To build or renovate Home Show practical knowledge has grown into an unmissable event of huge proportions, and this year Hamilton’s Claudelands Event Centre is gearing up for the biggest Home and Garden Show yet. Covering indoors and outdoors, traditional and modern, the four-day event kicks off on the 4th of August, and visitor numbers are predicted to break records. That’s because as well as a host of great ideas for the home, there are also many other attractions at this year’s show — not the least of which is a Gourmet Food Court bursting with unique local flavours.

Another drawcard for many visitors is the range of showday discounts and specials on offer from many exhibitors. You can often secure a great deal on the day, or, if you’re lucky, you could take home a prize from one of the many contests and giveaways which spice up the home show experience. Baumatic appliances are giving away a chic red Vespa scooter, Classic Hits invite you to ‘clip the ticket’ for a chance to win a $1,000 hamper each day, and Mitre 10 Mega have a $1,000 voucher for one lucky visitor who votes for their favourite design interior. The competition in this field will be fierce — the Waikato Home and Garden Show is a showcase of the best of the best in interior design and garden design, and this year six top designers have taken up the challenge to create the ultimate indoor living space. …continued on page 24

It’s also a valuable resource for those who are renovating with an eye to speculation — a great way to keep a finger on the pulse of the market, checking out the latest trends in design. They say that a stunning bathroom or contemporary kitchen can really sell a home, and you’ll find examples of both these and more at the Waikato Home and Garden Show.

Outdoors, the New Zealand Landscape Design Awards will be an equally stunning spectacle, as the nation’s foremost garden designers vie for the coveted title. Voting is open to the public in both arenas, and this year’s theme (‘oh so modern’) allows plenty of scope

for flights of imagination both idoors and out. You’re sure to take away some great ideas for both home and garden from this series of groundbreaking displays, and you can even meet and talk to the designers themselves for a little artistic inspiration. Technology is central to modern

living, and so the Waikato Home and Garden Show is proud to unveil a brand new concept this year – the Space Module. Within, you’ll find the very latest cutting edge technology from the likes of Smeg appliances, Samsung electronics and many more, incorporated seamlessly into a living design that’s less science fiction than a glimpse of a near-future reality. If contemporary just isn’t fresh enough for your new home, take a look at what the coming years have to offer – although, it’s true to say that all the electronic wizardry and futurist styling of the Space Module are at our fingertips today. Not a sight to be missed! Finally, it’s well worth mentioning the other delights of a vist to the Home and Garden Show. Relax for a while with a goumet meal at the food court, and watch top chef Paul Jobin working his magic in the Smeg cooking theatre. Drop in for a drink at House Bar – the official 2012 Home Show bar. Or let the kids enjoy a visit to the Children’s Zone, sponsored by Springfree Trampolines. There’s also floral art to see, along with all those artful, clever, thrilling and

downright stunning displays of interiors and gardens to drink in. No matter whether you’re building from scratch, renovating your own home, looking to break into the home buying and selling market, or you’re just an avid follower of design trends, there’s a world of interest and information waiting for you at this year’s Waikato Home and Garden Show. Mark your calendar for the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th of August and head down to the Claudelands Event Centre to take part in this celebration of creativity, craft and fun. After all, a home is our biggest investment – it makes sense to invest a day or two exploring the possibilities, and making your home simply amazing.

To build or renovate Going for a great image Building a home from scratch certainly has a lot to recommend it — not least being the fact that the family moves in when the building is ready But on the other hand, renovating an existing home — unless alternative living space is available, means living with the detritus of construction and all its associated drawbacks, including incessant noise from hammers and power tools. That is, unless you are joining the speculators, doing up old or poorly maintained houses to on-sell. If you’re renovating with the intention of a return on investment, you need to look at tastes other than your own — to cater for the average buyer’s preferences. Visiting show homes is a good way to get your finger on the market pulse. Your target market is the buyers who do not know how to renovate or can’t be bothered with the work involved. They’re looking for a house that they can move into and not have to lift a finger to decorate. They want the financial advantages of owning a home, but not the headaches. It is important to make improvements on those points in a house that the buyers actually notice. The fixtures in the home are usually

NEED

attention magnets. Kitchens and bathrooms really do sell houses. Spare the expense in the living and sleeping areas, and use it to make the kitchen and bathrooms as spectacular as a small budget will allow. Appearance sells. Cosmetics are also important for the house to look freshly renovated when the goes up.

of our lives in our homes and so the environment and the ambience you create will have a huge impact on your life.

But then, you may be renovating for yourself, and how your home looks says something about you as the owner.

It is also a fact that you need to stick to a budget. Quality is expensive, and pushes the price of most houses out of the range of the average first-time buyer.

So once the building renovations have received their final lick of paint, it’s time to look at the interior of the house. Textures, furniture and lighting are all important elements that will vary according to the specific rooms you’re decorating. One of the easiest accessible venues for home decorating choice today has to be the television. There are myriad home improvement programmes and that means a free information service for doer-uppers. We spend about 80 percent

plus appearance, or just appearance. Buy for appearance. It’s the look that will sell the house.

?

But one expense that must be worthwhile is for good decorating advice. An interior designer can show you how to pull together the entire look of your home; the exterior colours, the interior wall and accent colours, the carpet and flooring colours and patterns, cabinet colours and hardware, and the layout of the rooms. The few hundred dollars that it will cost to put your house’s package together can turn into a few thousand dollars if it attracts even one more buyer with an offer in his hand. After all — it’s all about impressing a buyer, or just yourself?

The winning kitchen is part of a 1920’s character house that underwent major renovations to transform it into a functional, modern home. The owners wanted a design, which would represent this transformation as well as reflect their personalities. The kitchen also needed to accommodate the changing needs

The underlit reflective laminate and glass surface creates a furniture-like appeal and transforms the highly functional kitchen into an entertainment space. The palette of black, white, grey and complimentary green is lively with a fun appeal. “One important aspect of the project was to contrast the kitchen with the original character of the house,” Robin says. “ I used clean lines and simple white gloss surfaces to help achieve this.” The judges said, ‘the kitchen reflects the industry well and was a clear winner.’
