Federated Farmers meat and fibre industry group chairperson Rick Powdrell says rural New Zealand has been through a challenging climate in recent years, with many farmers still enduring the ‘fallout’ and adjusting their farm policies going forward, as they look to return to normal. “Whether you have been through severe drought or destocked as a result of last season’s perceived strong El Nino, you will be looking to restock to more normal numbers,” he said. “Severe drought areas will be affected longer as pastures need to be reestablished, which will start as soon as farmers feel confident in the weather patterns. For many this is not evident yet and short-term crops will continue to be the Rick Powdrell — Federated Farmers backbone of feed supplies.” meat and fibre industry group chairperson Destocking was also “The question to meat processors compounded by many dairy farmers choosing to remove their animals from would be, are they supplying pregrazing with sheep and beef operations. committed contracts or purely Many farmers were looking at filling throughput? “To see breeding capable cows, restocking in late winter, due to excellent autumn growth and a mild start to winter heifers, ewes and hoggets heading to in the North Island and pasture growth slaughter at a time farmers are looking improvement in some areas of the at all avenues to restock is for them very disheartening. WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES September 2016

The first litres of Waikato-farmed milk are flowing through Fonterra’s newest high-efficiency milk powder plant, as the world’s joint-largest dryer comes online in the South Waikato.

knowledge. We sought expertise locally, nationally and globally from more than 200 companies and their dedication has seen the project come in on time and well under budget. “The last few weeks, as we geared up to first milk, has been an exciting time not only for Fonterra, but for everyone in Lichfield and our surrounding communities who have lived this development along with us. It’s rewarding to see it all come off without a hitch as the plant heads into its first season.” The dryer is supported by a new distribution centre and a sophisticated wastewater treatment plant. A new biological wastewater treatment

plant is capable of turning dairy waste into fertiliser which is then irrigated onto neighbouring farmland to help pastures flourish — part of the co-operative’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The new dryer is expected to be running at full capacity in the next week, providing dairy nutrition to more than 20 markets around the world.

The new 30-tonne-an-hour dryer at the co-operative’s Lichfield site will be capable of processing an additional 4.4 million litres of milk each day — equivalent to almost two Olympic swimming pools — into high quality milk powder for global markets. Large scale dryers such as this play a key role in driving value for the business, says Fonterra’s Chief Operating Officer Robert Spurway. “Premium milk powder is a valuable product for Fonterra in its own right, but people often underestimate the strategic importance of powder production to the co-operative’s overall asset mix,” he said. “The capacity these assets give us takes the pressure off during the peak of the season, meaning we have more freedom to prioritise milk into higher returning products. “Our goal is to strike a balance in our assets that enables us to switch between products quickly to meet demand changes in global markets, push the pace on production when milk volumes dictate, and ultimately deliver the best product mix to generate returns.” South Waikato operations manager Sam Mikaere says opening the new dryer is the culmination of more than two years of focus and effort from teams around the world. “The successful commissioning of this project is the result of an exceptional breadth of experience and

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

BY ANN MORGAN

Graham Hunkin grew up in the city but always was an outdoors person. His parents bought a block of land in Ramarama and he later purchased his own 18 acre property in Tuakau on the edge of the Waikato river.

“S

ome of it is hilly and some is flat. I didn’t have a lot of money when I first started and the property had a lot of gorse so my wife Melanie and I would come and cut the gorse down,” said Graham. “We burnt it in piles and painted the stumps with a concentrated spray solution. We then electric fenced the property. Melanie was my right hand man. We weren’t married back then — this was my idea of a date, then we got married. Graham initially started his lifestyle block with purchasing and growing dairy weaners, but with the soil being a clay loam it would pug in the wet, and with

hilly ground it was hard to run cattle on the steeper parts. “At one stage we tried to run Suffolk sheep for the freezer, but I found all the hassles with fly strike, shearing and foot rot weren’t worth it,” said Graham. “I saw an article on miniature Herefords and liked their white face and cute body and thought without so much weight there wouldn’t be so much pugging messing up the property, so we purchased some.” Miniature Herefords are approximately 50 — 60 percent of the size of a regular Hereford. “Mine are typically a little on the smaller size. I had a bull who

weighed 380 kilograms live weight, the standard Herefords can easily reach 700 kilograms. “I’d like to think I have them trained but they have me trained. I call them instead of having a dog and now they stand at the gate and moo at me. If I don’t shift them they walk my gateway to mud making a mess until I do.”

Graham says if you are killing the stock for your freezer you end up with sufficient meat for a family and this size animal means the handling facilities don’t have to be so robust. “You still need good solid facilities for safety because 380 kilograms can do a serious amount of damage. Our animals are a little lighter in colour because of

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES September 2016

the way they have been initially bred in the USA. They are really Herefords, just the smaller version without as much leg on them.” The Hunkins are members of the New Zealand Miniature Hereford Breeders Group, which is a subgroup of the New Zealand Hereford Association. Only registered miniature Hereford stock will give you the certainty they will breed true. When people are buying miniature Hereford stock they need to check for the NZMHBG stamp on the registration papers to know they are genuine. This prevents being sold a poor doer, or runt, which is claimed to be miniature. “If you have purchased a non-genuine miniature it may have big genes. When you mate it with another animal you could end up with a whopping big animal and calving difficulties,” said Graham. “You can run approximately three to four miniatures to two regular animals. They are good for a lifestyle block and standard electric fencing is all that is required. They are a quiet breed and good feed converters, especially on the poorer feed. Graham says when they are born they are super cute and weigh around 24 kilograms, about the size of a big cattle dog but more solid, and they have an absolutely pristine white face until they learn to rub it in the mud. “Dairy farmers have taken an interest in the larger of the miniature bulls for first year calving. You can take a heifer and put them to a miniature Hereford bull a year earlier, which results in a slightly

smaller offspring and easier calving. “You get a white faced calf (always a premium at the sale yards) and a milking cow a little earlier than if you had to wait the extra months until your heifer was large enough to drop a regular sized animal. “Some people on a lifestyle block can’t kill their pets but we eat our non — registered animals like steers. We don’t shoot them for the fun. Killing for food and killing for fun are two different things.

“There are approximately 27 miniature Hereford members in the group across the country, and around 198 registered breeding females. “They are a fantastic animal. Going out into a paddock on a nice summer’s day with the breeze blowing and your cattle sitting under the trees chewing their cud is really stress relieving. It’s nice to see your animals sitting there happily. It is difficult to be stressed when the animals are sitting there quietly chewing away.”

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES

MAARTEN VAN SCHIE

BY ROSE STIRLING

THE VAN SCHIE FAMILY FARM HAS GROWN INTO A BIG BUSINESS OVER THE YEARS TO NOW SUPPLY MUCH OF THE NORTH ISLAND MARKET WITH BUTTON MUSHROOMS.

T

he Quality Mushroom company started in 1988 with just just four sheds located in Ranby Road in Ohaupo. It has since doubled in size and now houses over eight sheds as well as mycelium growing houses. General manager Daniel van Schie says his parents Frans and Hilda van Schie were able to purchase the farm after a series of events combined in their favour. “The opportunity came up when my father was a refrigeration engineer to manage the operation and buy some shares. He was there for 10 years when an option arose for him to buy it outright.” Now 27 years on Frans and Hilda are semi retired and it’s their children’s turn Waikato Lifestyle to run the farm.

Location: Hamilton

The three van Schie brothers, Daniel along with his brother Bobby the farm’s operations manager, and Maarten van Schie the grower, work as a team to operate a business that supplies central and the upper North Island with over 350 tonnes of button mushrooms every week. Daniel says his parents however are still hands-on with the business. “Mum manages the accounts and dad just comes and checks up on me and my brothers and hands out advice — they’re finding it hard to let go.” The three brothers work year round at Quality Mushrooms and as Daniel says there is no such thing as a mushroom season where they work. “We never stop — it never stops, 18x13cm wide) it’s an all year round business, with full

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

zero waste. “We don’t really have much waste whatsoever and we use everything we can.” For instance on the farm, mushroom stalks get spread on paddocks for the dairy farmer next door to be used as fertiliser and the family even recycle water.” “All the water in our compost yard gets recycled and reused. “This is important to my Dad who was raised on an organic farm in Holland by my granddad who cared deeply about the environment and this was passed down to my father.” They even produce their own compost

climate control.” Daniel, like his father an engineer by trade, says he started off working on the farm when he was just a youngster. “We all started off folding boxes when we were five years old and I worked as just a farm hand for quite a while when I was studying engineering and then when my older brother went on an OE, it was put on my shoulders to take on the position of general manager.” One of the company’s philosophies has always been to look after the environment and a lot of things are recycled and re-used on the farm and in 1999 they won the Paua award for

from a combination of chicken manure, straw and water. One of the things Daniel says he enjoys the most about working on the family farm is that no two days are the same. “It changes all the time. depending on which day it is — so each day is different. There is a big variety from office work to sorting out staff to unloading and loading trucks, fixing things in the engineering room — just every day is different.” It’s half art but also half science. I guess i’m a bit stubborn and i like a challenge — you don’t get bored put it that way. “ Fur thermore Daniel says he gets a buzz when they make new production records. “I think the best week production wise — was 12.5 tonne in a week so that was pretty awesome. So what is the secret of their success? “We all work as a team and have weekly meetings to ensure we’re all reaching for a common goal,” says Daniel. So will Quality Mushrooms continue to grow in other directions? “We’ve done portobellos in the past and I grow oyster mushrooms for personal consumption, but no I want to stick to what we know — quality mushrooms that’s what we’re known for, ours are the freshest and the best.” The company supplies mushrooms via New World and Pak N’ Save. A small selection of local shops in Hamilton also stock their product

by Rose Stirling Tony Armstrong likes to look out his lounge room window and across the Waipa River to admire a view of Karakariki, a region described by some as ‘the dark side’.

“T

hat refers to the fact that they see us in the afternoon shadows of the Hakarimata Ranges,” says Tony. It is perhaps this view, in the 35 years that he has lived on his farm in Whatawhata, that has peaked his interest in the region, and forced Tony to scratch that niggly itch, that question that pervaded his thoughts as a young farming man, “what exactly used to

happen on the dark side? I like people and community and I sucked myself into it, and my motivation was knowing that I was stepping where no man had stepped before.” It has taken him 25 years, and plenty of research, but Tony has finally managed to scratch that itch, culminating in a book titled ‘Karakariki 1850–1950’ — an otherwise forgotten era. “I didn’t mean to spend that long writing it. I only took the book to the

1950s because that’s when there was a proliferation of subdivision — that’s when it started to become urban rural. It became too complex then, in that a new period was dawning and I just wanted to stay in that past era. “It documents every year in a sense and the activities that went on there — so starting in 1850 and through those years, a whole range of things and people happened. There have been plenty of highlights. I call them wow moments.” Tony discusses two of those wow moments or epiphanies — one involving an unexplained long journey by a priest to the region from Raglan, and the other the complete disappearance of a family of seven who farmed in the area. “One of those wow moments was the story of a minister, Mr Schneckenburger, and how he walked all the way over from Raglan to Karakariki three days prior to Christmas. I thought this was really weird, I thought why would you leave your family just before Christmas. “Then five years later we employed a weed sprayer on our farm and we were chatting when he said ‘well, our family used to live out here, well back in the early 1800s’. “I sat down with him and went through his Maori background, then he talked about his grandmother getting married in Karakariki just before Christmas and I thought: ‘oh wow so that is why the minister walked all the way over here.” Tony says one of the nice things about the region’s history was the peaceful relationship between the European settlers and Maori. “Here the Maori were

deemed friends. The early European settlers subdivided the land and gave some of it back to the Maori as a result. “The settlers left them 230,000 acres. That goes from the Raglan coast right through to the Waipa, it is a huge block. “I was at the Maori Land Court and I discovered these really expensive houses that they had built along the Waipa had been abandoned. Everyone disappeared including a family of seven — in fact what happened was they all died from the flu.” It is evident when talking to Tony that he is passionate about his region and not just Karakariki, but all of the Waikato, and in particular

He has been the Federated Farmers’ chair for the Hamilton group and he helped form the rates control team for the Waikato Regional Council nine-years-ago. Clean, Green and Sustainable

by John Morris — Agrissentials NZ Ltd

When it comes down to rugby, Ireland have always been a strong competitor, however their wins against the All Blacks, although memorable, are minimal. But don’t worry about that. Over the past ten years, Bora Bia, the Irish food board have introduced a new marketing brand, “Origin Green”. This brand is described as a verifiable commitment to sustainability throughout the entire supply chain, involving farmers, processes and suppliers, aimed at reducing the environmental footprint. So it looks like Ireland, have not only stolen a march on New Zealand, but also the rest of the world. New Zealand has always put forward our Clean, Green image brand, but that has been heavily tarnished over the years by overuse of chemicals, such as antibiotics, herbicides, insecticides,

drenches and synthetic fertilisers etc which continues to keep us locked into commodity markets and low returns. There is something critically wrong with New Zealand’s obsession with chemical production, especially in a time when consumers are calling out for safe, certified, nutritiously dense food produced in an eco friendly and sustainable manner. Ireland has stolen the march, but we can tackle them!! It is awesome to hear that the CEO of Landcorp, is looking at moving towards certified organic production. I enjoyed his comments, ”That there are people sceptical about organics in terms of science, but you cannot dispute

the substantial premium, especially with dairy”. Having been on the organic track for the past 30 years, there is a myriad of books and journals, written by PHD’s and Professors expounding the science of the natural system. The chemical fertiliser science is based on a “NPK theory” put forward by Justus Von Liebig in 1840. It is not science it is just a theory! Von Liebig declared his theory to be false and in the United States Department of Agriculture, year book, 1957, it states clearly that the NPK Balance sheet theory is false, so where is the science ? Farming is a natural system, not a chemical system. The natural system works together with mother nature, who provides all the free natural capital needed for farming, such as topsoil, micro organisms, sunlight, rain, atmospheric minerals, carbon as carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen, making up 97.5 % of the plants mineral uptake, all for free ! Plus bees and other pollinators, worms and manure recycled by animals, the list goes on. Current Agro chemical production is eroding this natural capital. We need to work with Mother Nature to restore this natural capital. Here at Agrissentials we are remineralising the topsoil and regenerating new topsoil through our fertilising programs. Our multi mineral, microbial rich fertilisers, not only do this, but bring health and vitality back to the soil, which transfers onto plants, animals and

humans, dramatically reducing sickness and health problems. The United Nations, F.A.O. (Food and Agriculture Organisation), declared 2015 as the “International year of soils”, they stated that, ”Soil is a finite resource, meaning its loss and degradation is not recoverable within a human life spam!” Agrissentials dispute this and have recorded anecdotal evidence, using our own fertilisers on a Bio Gro certified farm, with 50mm topsoil on a clay base, we witnessed over an eight year period an increase in the topsoil of 250mm, ( Ralph Littles dairy farm, Ruawai, NI ). So bring it on! Organic farming is not only the future, but it is also the security and sustainability we need to continue enjoying our lives and our farming. The change from chemical production to natural certified production is very simple. All it entails is a change from synthetic, soluble fertilisers that are impacting on our environment, – to Agrissentials multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers which enhance the environment. Simply amazing safari Africa was a ‘bucket list’ destination which Anna Peka dreamed of. She never imagined the opportunity would arise to join a Masihambe Afrika Tours Wild Life and Game Parks safari. Last May her dream came true. “Arriving in Johannesburg I took a Soweto Tour which incorporated visiting Nelson Mandela’s house,” said Anna. “Our adventure began the next morning and that night two big hippos were feeding on the lodge’s lawn only a few feet away, it was amazing.” Anna said they drove the panoramic route with its sweeping vistas and views as they headed towards Kruger National Park. “As we entered the gates, a large male rhino walked so close to us we could almost touch him. We had many close encounters with a multitude of wildlife including beautiful birds. “We saw three of the big five early in the trip — elephant, buffalo, and rhino. We stayed in Mapungubwe National Park on the border of Botswana with treetop walkways, incredible rock formations and giant baobab trees. “We watched a pride of lions and at night we relaxed around a campfire whilst listening to the calls of the wild.” At Matopos National Park they tracked rhino on foot with no fences between them. It was another heart racing and adrenaline pumping experience and she says Victoria Falls is a breathtaking sight — even more impressive from the air. “We cruised the Chobe River — very close to elephants as they fed on the grass along

the banks, and joined a pack of wild dogs in full hunting mode on their chase. We saw leopards, elephants with their babies, and other animals. “We visited the Makgadikgadi Pans and the water paradise of the Okavango Delta, cruised the Mokoro’s through the reeds, experienced Nile crocodiles and learnt about the land and its traditional medicines. “At Tuli Game Reserve, between South Africa and Botswana, we walked to a hyena den where the mother lay totally relaxed as cameras clicked madly. “Every aspect of the Wild Life and Game Parks safari was outstanding. I have the African bug and I hope my story encourages the African dream in you to join a Masihambe Afrika safari too.”

Helping with arthritis I could fill a book with the testimonies of clients that are experiencing significant improvements in joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As an example I have been working with someone with OA in her ankles and back. Through diet we wanted to reduce inflammation but also help lose a few kilos to take more pressure from the affected joints. Back arthritis is generally the least responsive to diet and supplements. Because of this we started with much higher doses of supplements. We added high levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 with higher doses of broad spectrum antioxidants and minerals. We added a temporary antioxidant booster and a double dose of my joint formula. In the first two months she was on over 1,500mg of high grade chondroitin and glucosamine with 200mg of 95% curcumin (turmeric) extract. Within two months she started to notice the difference. She has been able to significantly reduce pain medication and has greater mobility. As a bonus her energy has improved and feels much better in herself. Last week I carried out a monthly review with another client in her mid-

How can Bettaflex help?

• Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks of cartilage. • Supplementation with correct levels can support healthy cartilage function and cartilage repair processes. • Curcumin from turmeric helps to balance joint immune function to support joint health. • Research suggests chondroitin is effective only at levels of over 700mg daily.

John Arts comments:

“I formulated Bettaflex based on the latest research into natural compounds that can help with joint support and function. The normal dose is 2 capsules daily but I recommend a double dose for the first 1-2 bottles to saturate joint tissue.” (John Arts, Founder Abundant Health Ltd)

This client also had a long-term problem with very dry skin. While it has taken time to improve, here we have an 85-year-old whose joints and skin have improved significantly. Many people respond to health problems by purchasing supplements at the supermarket, health store or that advertise on TV. There is nothing wrong with that but in my experience the best results come from using a full nutritional programme covering diet, supplements and appropriate lifestyle changes. These are the steps that can really make a difference. Give me a call or email if you need more information. CROP & PASTURE PREP Optimise pasture management Pasture first is a DairyNZ initiative geared at encouraging farmers to use their pasture first — an increasingly important factor in farming through the current reduced milk price.

per cent from nitrogen fertiliser use, and the last five percent from supplements. Past grazing experiments by Dr Arnold Bryant and the Ruakura team revolutionised the way pasture was managed through winter and spring. Following a series of ground-breaking trials in 1999, Mr Bryant and his colleague John Penno set up the 1.75t MS/ha trial, aimed at achieving 1750 kilograms MS/ha and investigating the costs. It measured the increase in per-cow and per-hectare milk solids production when total feed supply is increased by bought-in supplements and/or nitrogen fertiliser. A range of combinations were used to increase pasture growth with N supplements bought in and an increased stocking rate to use the extra feed. The results indicated it was uneconomic to add extra feed to a system with good pasture utilisation, unless the stocking rate was increased and cheap feed available. DairyNZ research and development general manager Dr David McCall says the

pasture/supplementary debate has been polarising and confusing for some farmers. “The pasture first concept is about managing pastures regardless of farming system. Modelling has shown that getting pasture management right is worth over $300/ha, even at today’s milk prices.” In the 1.75t MS/ha trial, the control farmlet (no N applied) was producing 1000kg MS/ha. Using N fertiliser allowed an additional 200kg MS/ha to be produced and supplement use (maize silage) with increased stocking rate added another 400kg MS/ha. Dr McCall has re-analysed the trial results with today’s costs and milk prices. When comparing these differing farm systems at $7.00/kg MS, 85 percent of the operating profit came from pasture, 10 per cent from N fertiliser use and five percent from supplements. “Clearly it’s more important to get things right in something that contributes 85 per cent of the profit, before something that contributes the

last five per cent,” says Dr McCall. “When calculating at $4.00/kg MS, N use only increased the operating profit by two percent and the supplement groups made a loss. “This suggests farmers need to focus on optimising pasture management and be very careful about adding costs that may not give economic returns. It makes sense to have a supplementary feed source as insurance feed for dry cows in autumn but not to push production at a $4 milk price.”

Working the soil

COMBINED

The BioAg field day and soil health workshop at Te Kowhai near Hamilton is an opportunity to get up close to the functional workings of the soil upon which all farming enterprises — big or small depend on. A large area of land throughout New Zealand is occupied by so called lifestylers. These smaller blocks can be very productive and contribute to local communities providing a healthy local rural environment while also doing their bit for carbon sequestration. Linda and Tony Gorlicki rear calves, finish beef cattle and grow strawberries for gate sales on their 32ha block at Te Kowhai. Their strawberries have a reputation for great flavour and keeping quality and are grown without pesticides due to a high soil and plant health approach. The Gorlicki’s have achieved exceptional growth rates in their stock and remarkable stock health having started working with biological farm advisor Bruce Smith of BioAg since 2013. The inter-active workshop will involve hands-on participation whereby you will learn how to assess the current state of your soil and equip you with knowledge to self-monitor soil and pasture or crop health. Nicole Masters of Integrity Soils, is an agro-ecologist

After years of research looking for a quality product of exceptional value for money to bring to the discerning New Zealand market, owner Chris Joblin came across the Besp-Oak product and knew it was the real deal. As the United Kingdom’s number one brand of solid oak furniture, BespOak products are known for their beautiful European oak, dovetail, mortise and tenon joints, and tempered bevelled glazing. Because the furniture is hand-crafted to meet exacting European standards, purchasers can be assured of quality and best sustainability practice. The raw timber is then shipped to Vietnam where the product ranges are hand-crafted in state of the art Besp-Oak facilities under strict quality control. Besp-Oak NZ are the sole distributor of the Besp-Oak product for New Zealand, and in fact, New Zealand is the only place the product is available outside the UK and Europe. “As sole New Zealand agents for this respected UK brand, we import and sell direct at wholesale prices — no middle man means no requirement for a retail mark-up,” says Chris. There are currently more than 200 individual items online and on display in their Pukekohe based showroom New Zealand’s only BRANZ Appraised real stone veneer

Cutting horse demos return

19

Equidays is thrilled to announce cutting horse demonstrations will be returning to New Zealand’s premier equine event after a threeyear hiatus. Come October 14, Equidays visitors will be able to enjoy this highly-skilled sport at Mystery Creek Events Centre. Dating back to Wild West cowboys working on the range, cutting demonstrates the ability of horse and rider to handle cattle, cutting those from the herd that require attention. “We’re delighted. Western is a huge crowd pleaser and the level of technique and horse-and-rider partnership required in cutting is really something to see,” said Equidays Event manager Ammie Hardie. “There’s a lot that goes into preparation to be able to accommodate this form of western — it’s not just a horse, a rider and an arena. With cattle involved, it becomes a whole other logistical effort and we’re excited it’s all coming together this year.” International cutting champion Bryan Lowcay will be at Equidays to give demonstrations over all three days. With a proven track record in the world of Quarter Horse training, care and breeding, he has been in the game for more than 50 years. “Bryan is an expert in his profession and we’re extremely lucky to have his

talent,” said Ms Hardie. From working for world champions in the cutting-horse industry in Texas, winning the Texas Year-End Hi-Point award and competing in the World Finals, to winning many NZ Cutting Horse Association National Championships here in New Zealand, Bryan has learnt from and competed against the very best cutting-horse competitors in the world. He has also judged a myriad of western horse events throughout the country and is the first and longest serving judge for the NZCHA. He has also held the offices of vice president of the New Zealand Quarter Horse Association and president of the NZCHA several times (as well as being a founding council member). He has been a monumental influence in the New Zealand western riding industry. Three-time Equidays clinician and 2014 KHH Stallion Challenge competitor Ben Longwell, of True West Horsemanship, will also be showcasing his style of cattle work and horsemanship during the three-day event. Straightening out Health & Safety for farmers

Farm safety makes a lot of cents I often get asked by farmers about farm safety plans and ACC levy discounts. Creating a Safety Management Plan for your farm if you have employees is not only a requirement under the Health

and Safety at Work Act, it is also good sense to plan to actively save lives and avoid harm. But with fluctuating dairy prices, planning to be safe can actually save you money. The ACC offers a 10 per cent discount on ACC work levies called the Workplace Safety Discount (WSD) for farmers that can demonstrate that they have an effective health and safety system and safe work practices at their workplace (some criteria apply). There’s a good reason for this. According to the ACC, in the 2014/15 financial year alone there were 16,634 new claims relating to a farming occupation. On average, over 11 workdays were lost to each claim. Let’s do the math. Based on these numbers, we are looking at approximately 182,974 work days lost in the farming community in one year. These numbers are astronomical and sometimes the personal cost is even higher. Lost limbs, lost lives.

SLIPPERY SURFACES?

The highest number of claims came from men aged 50–54 years. Almost cer tainly experienced farmers. They are some pretty serious statistics in anyone’s book. Suddenly the idea of planning to be safe and changing safety behaviour on the farm is making a lot more sense. There are other benefits too. How would you cope if a worker was off for two weeks with an injury? The disruption to your business will spiral out to finances, family and other workers, causing stress which can cause more injuries. But back to ACC levies. You won’t get a discount by having someone draft up a plan and then you throwing it in your cupboard. Nor will you save lives or injury. You will need to demonstrate that you are physically using the plan as part of your daily farming practice —

identifying hazards and thinking about safe behaviours at work. And why wouldn’t you? Less accidents, less disruptions and less ACC levies. Sounds like a win all around to me.

LIVESTOCK

Hoof Print with Fred Hoekstra

HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

Posture of the hind legs There is a connection between the posture of the hind legs in rear view and the condition of the claws. Normally the hind legs are more or less parallel. It is hardly surprising that in the course of a few years the difficult task of the outer hind claws may affect the posture of the hind legs. When a cow stands and walks properly, there is less chance of the hooves being overloaded. The ideal cow makes optimum use of her legs and hooves; her body weight is distributed evenly over her legs and hooves. This does not happen in reality, as dairy cows tend to put most of the load on their outside hind claws, so that is where most of the problems occur. Heavy loading and contusion of the quick in the outer hind claw will in the end cause sensitivity or pain. The cow will try to compensate for this by walking on her heels and by placing or turning the foot more outwards by adopting a base-wide or a cow-hocked posture, thus making the inner claw bear more weight and the outer less. This decreases the height of the heel,

makes the angle of the front wall more shallow and causes the cow to walk with her hocks closer together. Such an adjustment of posture is frequently observed. Thus the posture of the hind legs of our dairy cattle is only partly inborn and to a great extent adopted. The latter is due partly to the unfavourable loading on the outer hind claw and to domestication, but probably for the greater part to the claw diseases that can afflict the claws. As a matter of fact, the effect of this adjustment of posture is relative: measuring shows that in adopting a cow-hocked or base-wide posture, the cow relieves her sensitive outer claw of its overload, only to a certain extent. Mostly this claw remains more heavily loaded than the inner claw, albeit less than before. This must be ascribed to the difference in height. The longer-term effects of laminitis may eventually be

seen as an upward rotation of the toe and a convex shape of the anterior hoof wall. Improving the weight distribution, together with restoring the foot to its correct shape and weight-bearing surfaces is the main aim of preventative hoof trimming. Due to preventative hoof trimming being very time consuming we have found that many farmers are recognising the benefits of contracting their trimming out to professional hoof trimmers, resulting in a reduction of severe lameness incidences in the herd and reduced lame cow numbers; thereby increasing productivity and bottomline profits.

LOOK OUT FOR YOUR WORK MATES

Showing them how it’s done You know how it is. You hear what sounds like the familiar refrain of a favourite old rock song blasting from the tinny speakers of a young person’s iPhone. For a moment, you think that all is right with the world and that someone of the schlock-pop generation has gained an appreciation for the classics. Then you realise, with dawning horror, that this is the dubstep remix of that treasured ‘classic’. You wish that the guitar-wielding gods of ‘proper music’ could descend from on high to set matters right. So it is with many concepts, which touch off a craze the second time around, only to leave old hands shaking their heads with disbelief. One such is the resurgence of the compact SUV — a hot ticket right now in motoring, but a design which has definitely been seen before. Turn back the clock far enough and one iconic brand has seen it come past twice, for very different reasons. So when they step in and show the upstarts how it’s done, the result is like Led Zep crashing a Miley Cyrus show. Right? Jeep invented the small SUV. Well — to be more accurate, the Willys Jeep was the first ever compact, light, go-anywhere four wheel drive and though it may have been spawned from

the need to transport a generation of young men into the fight against Hitler, lessons were learned there which informed the entire 4x4 genome. Fast forward to the 1980s and TV icon Angus MacGuyver was to be found driving a copper-coloured Jeep Wrangler — a compact, go-anywhere off-roader which fit his character like the ubiquitous Swiss army Renegade Trailhawk channels a bit of the war-winning Willys knife and pocketful of string trim confection, this is a true Jeep. High and paperclips. Now, with small, compact SUVs ride height, tough skid plates, real offcoming in every flavour from serious road capabilities and plenty of torque and German to pop-retro Japanese, Jeep make this far more than an urban ‘faux have taken to the drawing board to lay wheel drive’. Sure, it knows when you’re on city down the law. Their new Renegade Trailhawk tarmac and adjusts its drivetrain specs channels a bit of the war-winning Willys accordingly, saving fuel by kicking into — check that iconic grille — and a bit two wheel mode. But it’s fully trail rated, meaning that of the 80s Wrangler with its shape and footprint. Underneath, however, it’s all serious men in Swanndris — or US new technology, including a powerful new equivalent — have tried their hardest 2.4-litre engine with a nine-speed auto to get the Renegade Trailhawk stuck. They couldn’t, which may spell big box. Shifting the game into high gear by Andy Bryenton

When Yamaha decide to compete in a motorsport competition, they’re more than a little focussed on winning. Whether it’s crushing the record for power and speed with their racebred street bikes or innovating on the dirt track — this is the company which developed and deployed the first monoshock, for example, in 1973 — the big blue machine which is Yamaha’s research and development division take no prisoners. Take a look at the stats. In 1955 Yamaha built their first ever bike, a copy of a German 125cc single-pot, constructed in a factory recovered from a bombed-flat Japanese infrastructure. The next year they entered their first grand prix with it. Out of a huge field, they came 6th. Many would call this a success — but to Yamaha boss Genichi Kawakami it was still a loss and so he and his team put in the hard yards, upping their power to 250cc and barnstorming the 1963 Belgian GP. That’s a fearsome level of self confidence and a technological learning curve like the bad side of Everest. So, when Yamaha decide to throw their hat in the ring when it comes to pure sport side-by-side off-roaders, people pay attention. Anyone who goes

HOLDEN

from zero to Grand Prix gold in under a decade, then racks up the victories down through five more decades is not to be taken lightly. What they’ve come up with — the YXZ1000R — is definitely no shrinking violet. Aha, say the purists — Yamaha may be out of their depth creating a four wheeled racer. They only do bikes and boats, right? Well, no. The YXZ sits next to other Yamaha engineered favourites such as all the Toyota 4AGE cars, the Lexus LFA, the Celica GT4 and the Noble M600. Sure, the 3 cylinder 998cc mill in the YXZ1000 may not have the sheer horsepower of those engines, but it’s powering a lightweight off-roader which is all engine, suspension — by Fox — and aggressive, grippy tyres. Power comes on with a sound like a monstrous chainsaw, then gets shunted to the dirt via a manual sequential five speed box, with multiple clutches juggling the input like those in a supercar. All this would be terrifying, right up to the 10,500rpm redline, if it wasn’t for the fact that the suspension setup used here is pure racing spec as well. Choppy ground is eaten up by the long travel of

the Fox Shox, letting all that delicious HP come out to play. If you’re a fan of off-roading who has watched American brands like Polaris and CanAm dominate the racetrack for the last few seasons, this new addition to the grid will be big news. And if you want to have fun offroad, your choice just became that little bit more difficult.

As Ford continue to go from strength to strength with their ‘world car’ formula — which has produced not just the phenomenal new Mustang but also surprise barnstormers like the Fiesta ST and Focus RS — it’s come time for them to tidy up the middle of their SUV lineup. Not wanting to be as confusing to customers as the array of choices confronting the would-be buyer of a Porsche 911 in one of its superfast variants, Ford in the antipodes have narrowed the field down to a tight four. At the top — biggest, most comfortable (and with off-road capabilities in the vicinity of some light military vehicles) is the very competent seven-seat Everest. At the other end of the scale sits the peppy little EcoSport. Step up from there and you’ll find the crossover Kuga — set for its own upgrade in the very near future. Slotted in just below the Everest used to be the Territory, but it’s headed for the proverbial dusty trail, replaced by something new. That newcomer is the Ford Edge and it’s immediately apparent that this family-sized sports utility shares the design DNA of the Ranger and Everest. That big trapezoidal grille, distinctive wheels and side creases all tie in to the rest of the Ford stable. Purist will stick with the big powder-silver mags provided, but one could be forgiven for

wanting to see the Edge kitted out with 22-inch carbon black rims. Unlike Everest and Ranger, which share a common platform despite being as different as cats and dogs in the fine detail, the Edge is every-panel-new. The Edge first debuted at the LA motor show in 2013 — geological eras ago in auto terms, one would think. But the addition of new tech like Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment touch screen system and, of course, the choice of everything up to a turbo-boosted v6 under the hood make the version which will come to Kiwi shores cutting, well, Edge. Some have compared it to BMW’s big, imposing X5 — favourable — noting that it comes for X3 money. Here that means inevitably it will face off not against euro lux G-wagens, but against Toyotas, Mazdas of the CX variety and the plucky fan favourite Kia Sportage. Kiwis are sure to want actual off-road ability to mix it up with towing power and kid-friendly long-haul seating comfort. It looks like a winning formula. Spacious, clever (it even has active noise cancelling speakers to deaden road noise) and

with power to spare, the Edge is a fine replacement for the Territory. Though bigger families or serious adventure campers may still want to step up to the Everest for that third row and additional

dog-room, the Edge looks set to satisfy that growing sector of the market who consider a traditional station wagon too small, but a big diesel powered SUV too large for their liking.

the students’ and schools’ visions of how they think they will learn in the future and what they will be able to do with technology. “We’ve opened up the competition to include secondary schools for the first time this year so we’re really excited to see the visions of education in the future from a range of ages and rural schools. “All children in New Zealand need to be equipped to live, play and work in an online world. It’s not just about being engaged at school, but also preparing for the workforce of tomorrow.” Rural Women New Zealand vice president Fiona Gower said: “This is such a great competition and we’ve seen first-hand the benefits it’s delivered

for previous winners. It’s a fantastic opportunity for rural schools to have the chance to tap into the expertise of a global technology company like HP.” From September 14 2016, rural primary and secondary schools throughout New Zealand, with less than 450 students, will be eligible to enter the HP New Zealand Rural Schools competition. To enter, schools simply need to submit an entry form at www. hp.co.nz/ruralcompetition. Entry criteria, full terms and conditions can also be found on the HP New Zealand website. Photos and videos to support entry forms are welcomed. Entries close at 6pm, October 31 2016.
