Landowners are being asked to report rook sightings for targeted pest control before the non-native, large black bird becomes a problem on farms. They feed on newly sown crops and destroy pasture and silage by tearing them up in the search for grubs. “Entire paddocks have had to be completely resown at the hands of rooks,” says Waikato Regional Council biosecurity officer Andrew McConnell. “Rooks can form breeding colonies of up to several hundred birds, and that’s definitely not something we want to be seeing here in our region. We have been managing rooks in the Waikato since 2002 and estimate the population is now less than 50 birds, so that is good news. However, this small number means it is like looking for a needle in a haystack for them, which is why we need landowners’ help.” The Waikato’s rook populations are found in Te Poi/Matamata, Cambridge/
Hamilton and Mangakino/Whakamaru/ Taupo. “It is a good time of the year to start seeing the rooks as it is the breeding season, which is when they congregate together. In the Waikato, they generally build their rookeries in pine or eucalyptus trees, with a typical rookery holding three to seven nests.” Mr McConnell says it is important that landowners contact the regional council if they sight rooks, rather than try to control them themselves. “They are very wary, and we don’t want to scare them off elsewhere, so once again we don’t know where they are.” To control rooks, the council uses a toxin, which it applies directly to a nest. Be in to win a $200 Hunting & Fishing voucher by reporting where rooks are breeding. Contact Waikato Regional Council on 0800 246 732 or rooksighting@ waikatoregion.govt.nz.

Digital team honours

Waikato Regional Council’s digital team has taken a top honour at the Association of Local Government Information Management awards ceremony. Comprising web, social media and graphic design specialists, they won the Web and Digital Best Team of the Year Award at ALGIM’s Spring Conference. “We’re really lucky to be part of an organisation that enables us to find bold and creative ways to connect with our communities,” said council communications and engagement section manager Nicola Chrisp. For Fieldays, the council went with something fresh an eight-metre interactive wall to show visitors how flood schemes work. The result was innovative and progressive for the organisation. “While we continue to use other more traditional channels to connect with the people in our region, we have also been investing time in digital, using it to tell our own stories as well as to celebrate the awesome work our communities are doing. “We are enabling Waikato people to take part in making decisions on what is important to them, to have ownership of the issues and opportunities they face and to work together for a better Waikato region.” The team’s performance is measured by customer satisfaction and targets being met, Ms Chrisp said. “An online project management tool tracks progress against a job, and how the team has performed against the original deadline and criteria outlined. The council’s digital team provides inkind services to numerous multi-agency partnerships. It is well supported by the rest of the section, in particular, the communications team, pushing

hard to deliver results with limited time and budget. “Being the best team is about more than the output. It is about the energy and creativity, the laughs and comradery, and it is these things that enable us to be the best we can be.” The judges said they are a team that always produces outstanding results, and have a great time doing it. “Their close-knit team allows them to work together, utilising everyone’s strengths to provide innovative solutions to the problems at hand. There was a lot of stiff competition, and this

was a well-deserved win.” The award recognises outstanding teams who provide high-quality customer service through the delivery of the outcomes sought by their organisation. This award provides the opportunity for a team to demonstrate the difference it has made to the organisation, its customers and improved service delivery.

APPRENTICE APPRECIATING PARTNERSHIP by Ann van Engelen
Adrian Beattie is in his second season as an apprentice on a 710-cow dairy farm at Ohaupo.
T
he 20-year-old previously spent a year on a dairy farm milking 2,500 cows in Rotorua and believes a career in farming has a positive future. “I lived in Matakana and moved to rural Te Puke when I was nine years old living next to a dairy farm. When I was eleven, I asked if I could help the farmers,” says Adrian. “I started milking and did other farm activities in the school holidays until I was 17. I didn’t like school, so I finished my NCEA level two and went farming. I

enjoy everything about the job, including animals, improving the environment and learning to grow the best grass. “My responsibilities include tractor driving, milking, general farm work and I am about to do grass management courses through the apprenticeship. Learning to read grass measurements, including dry matter content and which paddocks cows should be going into and out of is important. This helps ensure the cattle are well maintained, fed and kept healthy. “We do grass silage and turnips that are planted in mid-November. We plant and cultivate and get contractors in to do most of the big cropping work as they

downed cows.” This year the farm had 710 calving and Adrian says the season was mostly positive. “I am milking 650 twice a day until mid-February when we cut the young mob down to once a day and then dry the cows off in May to start calving in mid-July. I have a working dog, which I am learning to train, and my boss, who is the contract milker has two working dogs.” Adrian is a member of Te Kawa West Young Farmers. Recent research by Farmstrong found social activities run by NZYF clubs have a positive impact on members’ wellbeing, and Adrian agrees. “A lot of young people, especially those working on larger dairy farms, struggle to find a good work-life balance,” says Adrian. “Going to young farmers is a good place to make friends and learn how others cope with different farm situations and circumstances. We discuss systems and get ideas and knowledge off each other. Mixing with other farmers gives balance. “We might talk about how you put a fence up, and someone else may have an easier way. “I learnt through these discussions to look at the paddock and if there is less grass at back, and more in front, you simply move the fence a little more out and get a better cover of grass on both sides. Don’t worry if it is in a straight line or not. “My future goal is a 2IC position and ultimately share milking and then farm ownership. I don’t have a preference of land as I have worked on rolling steep and flat, and both work well for me. “Farm owners’ children sometimes don’t want to take over the farms, so opportunities are coming up. I highly recommend the apprenticeship
Adrian believes the knowledge of grass management is an important factor for keeping cattle well-fed scheme and personally think it is one of the better courses to do because of the support and encouragement you get. I think farming is one of the best jobs, especially if you enjoy looking after animals. “Farming is an important part important of the kiwi lifestyle. If people can stick to it through the negative season, and do their best, it will show the general public that we are positively working with the environment.” It is hoped that a new partnership between PrimaryITO and NZ Young Farmers will provide an incentive for young people to get off the farm and
this year Primary ITO have offered 75 students a NZ Young Farmers membership. “If young people on farms don’t have a connection to their community and make friends in their first couple of years, we tend to lose them,” Remar Knitwear & Adage Socks

PROGRESSING THE ELECTRIC FENCE by Ann van Engelen Alex Macmillan is a beef cattle farmer in Pipiwai and to help life on-farm be easier he has developed a gamechanging device for electric tape gateways.
“I
am appreciative of the companies that created the current designs of gate tape handles, but they eventually fail for a number of reasons. I always felt there had to be a better way to operate gateways that are controlled by electric tapes,” says Alex. “Rather than complaining, I designed a bullet-proof model — based on my observations over the decades of my farming career to helping advance the
industry. My sturdy gateway hinge spring uses marine-grade stainless steel, which won’t rust and is the first of its kind in New Zealand. I officially launched my product at the National Fieldays in June. “The product has a positive environmental impact by taking plastic and degrading wire springs out of the equation. The more volume of the invention we get on farms to displace the traditional option means more positive results.”
Alex Macmillan with his son Michael has launched Alex’s invention helping farmers with electric tape gateways

youngest technician they ever employed. When I returned home, I spent more than four decades working for the Livestock Improvement Corporation as an AI technician. One of my biggest days involved inseminating cows in 29 herds, and I travelled more than 209km that day. “I was a former Patumahoe Young Farmers club member, and the thing I remember most fondly were the interclub debates. There was some fierce competition in our area. It is a great way to expand your knowledge, share ideas and socialise. We enjoyed getting off-farm for various activities and knew our way around a dance floor regularly attending Saturday night dances in local halls. It was fun, and people need to do it now days too for time out and get away from it all. “I want to support NZ Young Farmers and help the next generation reach their goals. The organisation helps to nurture young people in primary industries, and I personally received immense benefits from being a member when I was young. It was one of the best ways to make friends. “My devices will be installed in the near future at the Auckland dairy farm gifted to NZ Young Farmers by the late Donald Pearson. They will help with sustainability in the long term. We have also had considerable interest from farmers in coastal areas who are tired of replacing their current gate components every couple of years due to rust.” The Lomacs gateway hinge spring will solve this problem and other issues. Marketed by Lomacs New Zealand, it has generated interest from the Australian

Alex is now 81 years old and his granddaughter Madison often helps him around the farm learning from him along the way states of Tasmania and Victoria. “Dad’s invention is permanently mounted on a post and all of the componentry, apart from the plastic anchor, is marine-grade stainless steel. It should last a lifetime and save money, frustration and broken gateways along the way,” said Alex’s son Michael Macmillan, a director of Lomacs New Zealand. “He has dedicated his life to the agriculture sector, and this product is different from anything else on the market. It is a significant cost when every three to four years you are replacing the current product. He set out to design something that would last for decades and given there is no plastic in the mechanism — it is more environmentally friendly. “The swivel design allows it to move from side to side — essentially eliminating damage. It gives a consistent spring compression on the tape
attachment every time so it shouldn’t stretch beyond the barrel. The barrel is protected from contamination such as mud, organic matter and water and being permanently attached removes the risk of someone running over the unit. “More innovations are in the pipeline, and in time may enhance this invention because dad wants to give farmers access to a quality product. The exciting thing is that the unit can be applied to sectors outside of farming, including the marine industry. More information can be found on our lomacs.nz website. “Dad’s invention has been selected as a finalist in the NZ Best Design Awards, and I am looking forward to hitting the road to attend NZYF club meetings to discuss and promote my father’s invention.”

WAIKATO FARMING LIFESTYLES
AN EQUESTRIAN
VISION by Ann van Engelen
Laura Macnab has grown up with horses on her parent’s beef and sheep farm on the rugged West Coast, and this has led her into an equestrian interest resulting in overseas travel.
“I
have been wearing gumboots my whole life. Mum breeds Welsh ponies and Dad is also from a horsey family — so a love of horses is in my blood. My two sisters and I learnt to ride from a very young age, but I am the only one that stuck with it and gave it a crack professionally,” says Laura. Laura’s passion for horses has seen her represent New Zealand through the NZ Horse Council at the Australasian Grand National Championships in Australia. She placed third in the 21 to under 30-year-old age group and was also a team member in the Royal Agricultural Society Equestrian TriNations team in England placing second. “Riding is mostly a solo sport, so competing as part of a team is an
awesome experience.” Laura is in her last year of an ag science degree majoring in equine and would like to become a bloodstock agent, for racehorses and buy and sell on behalf. She also received a scholarship through Thoroughbred NZ, which will see her travel to the Irish National Stud in Ireland next year. “I am extremely humbled and excited to have been chosen as one of this year’s recipients of the Irish National Stud Scholarship put up by the Taylor Family. This scholarship is extra special to me as Faith Taylor is my late grandmother Margaret Macnab’s sister. I am incredibly proud to be heading to Ireland in January 2019 has been a really great year for me, and this might

just top it all off. To be involved with horses, you must be prepared to work hard, and take all the advice you can get from experienced people — every single day I learn something new. “We have cliffs and hills on the farm, which is home to Hereford Angus Cross beef cattle and a mix of sheep breeds. My sisters get the motorbike, and I grab the horse to muster the stock. We help where we can such as docking, drenching and shifting stock. “I show competitively and have worked in the thoroughbred industry for the last five years. Before university, I worked at Te Akau Stud during the summer. Now I do track work at the Awapuni Racecourse in the morning before uni. “I started competing because mum competed in the UK — she is English. I wanted to ride in the ring with the big kids, so she took me to a few shows when I was seven and 14 years later here I am. I have met the most incredible horsemen and women. “As soon as we were tall enough to get on a pony, we had to saddle, bridle, brush and care for our horses. Mum and dad gave us a really good start in life. My mum breeds our horses so she didn’t have to buy ponies for us and she breeds the perfect children’s ponies. If I am available, I help with the foaling, mares and stallion. “We hard feed our show animals, ensuring they get all the nutrients and supplements to perform at their best. Whether it is adding salt or a toxin binder into their feed, make sure you can provide for them, especially if you want your animal to perform like an athlete. Even saddles and bridles have to fit correctly — you wouldn’t send
Ensuring you have the ability to feed and care for your horse properly is of high importance to Laura who grew up on a beef and sheep farm
a runner out with ill-fitting shoes or clothes. My horses get saddles fitted every six months to a year to ensure they can perform at their very best.” Laura says if you want to purchase a horse and you are new to owning one ask someone you know who has a horse, or contact your local riding school and make sure you are ready for the commitment. “They are not like a dog or cat — it is a much bigger animal. Get lessons and ask lots of questions — don’t be afraid to fall off and get your hands dirty. They are social, and interaction is important. Everyone starts somewhere and it is not going to be an instant success story. They are animals, and you have to treat
them like animals but enjoy them as they can change your life. “I am lucky to have the support of my family as often weekends in summer are spent at horse shows. I am sure sometimes they would rather be somewhere else, but they understand my commitment to the sport, and I can’t
thank them enough. I was always the horse girl at school. I can’t imagine life without them. I help others when I can and give younger or beginner riders advice as a way to give back to help those who have helped me. Horses are where my heart lies, but I will always return to the family farm.”

Dung beetles to the rescue
by Ann van Engelen
Dr Shaun Forgie grew up travelling the world and is now helping New Zealand farmers transform animal dung into a useful product through dung beetles.
“M
ost of my childhood was in New Zealand, and as an adult, I lived in places like Argentina and South Africa,” said Shaun. Shaun gained his bachelor’s degree majoring in marine biology and master’s degree in zoology with honours in entomology, which is the study of insects. “I investigated dung beetles here in New Zealand, then completed my PhD in Pretoria, South Africa on ball-rolling dung beetles. Dung beetles here are restricted to native forests and bush habitats. When we started importing livestock, no one thought about needing

the dung beetle to clean up the poo, and that is where the problem started. We have an abundance of poo, creating a loss of productivity as it just sits on the paddock. “Hawaii and Australia pioneered the way and imported exotic pastoral dung beetles as the native ones were not going in to demolish it. Cow’s poo about 10 times a day creating a habitat for nasty flies such as the biting flies in Australia. Dung contains disease pathogens and gut parasites that get shat out to complete their cycle. “New Zealand has lots of rain, so we have water contamination problems in high rainfall areas with water coming off pastures getting into the waterways. In many instances, it may contain contaminants like pesticide residuals plus disease pathogens such as E coli, salmonella and giardia — mainly because dung is not getting buried into the soil rapidly because of lack of the beetles. I could see there was a problem here and set about improving my
understanding and establishing a solution. We went through a very fastidious process applying through the government and the Environmental Protection Authority to bring in 11 different types of beetles suitable to our conditions and climate. Ours are mainly from South-West Europe and Southern Africa. “Dung is a 24/7 — 365-day problem and the beetles get rid of a pile in around 24 hours to a few days. Different beetles are active at different times of the year, giving year-round dung control. They fly from dung pat to dung pat and set about making tunnels 30cm and 90cm in the soil underneath the pats for nesting. These are filled with the dung and made into balls or sausages each containing an egg. The hatching larvae feed on the ball and what is left in

the soil once the new adults emerge is organic carbon and nutrients.” Tunnelling, excavating subsoils to the surface opens up the soil, greatly improving aeration and soil structure, allowing greater infiltration of fertilisers and urine. “Burial of nutrient-rich manure means nutrients go into the ground instead of running across the surface to our waterways. “We are getting more than 80 per cent reduction in the surface flow of waterway contaminants like sediments following dung beetle nesting activity. Improved soil structure and nutrient loading deep in the soil enables grass roots to grow down deep, which is great for improving drought tolerance. “We are finding earthworms that we introduced have increased fivefold and a greater depth they can occur at. This is nature’s solution to pasture management — the process was busted when we added livestock onto our farms with no beetles to transform the manure. “Many studies report dung beetle activity results in at least 70 per cent reduction in gut parasites.A four-

seasons pack comprising seeding colonies of three to four different types of dung beetle is required for roughly 300 cows or 2,000 sheep, and beetle saturation off manure from this many stock happens by year nine. You release them and leave them to reproduce. “The economic saving through dung beetle use in Western Australia alone is estimated to be one billion dollars per annum. New Zealand is just waking up to them. “Australia started introducing dung beetles in the 1960s, and every farmer knows how important these beetles are as nature’s solution to solving many pastoral problems. “My single purpose is to fix the many problems with a common-sense solution. We have fencing and planting, but we need a self-sustainable lowcost solution on-pasture at the root of the problem. We owe it to the next generations to sort it out now with sensible solutions. Dung beetles to my mind are the best tool out there to do the job.” For more information go to dungbeetles.co.nz

A pain in the … by John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med)
The best part of what I do is to hear back from clients who have less pain and more mobility. If you are in pain, the first step should be a visit to your health practitioner for an accurate diagnosis. For the next few editions, we will look at the most common causes of pain and the measures we can take to help. In all cases, these measures are designed to help restore your body’s natural healing processes, which can be greatly affected by disease. Most pain is either caused or worsened by tissue inflammation. For example, in osteoarthritis, the immune system response to cartilage loss is inflammation. It can cause fluid accumulation, swelling, loss of function and invariably pain. An anti-inflammator y diet combined with well-formulated supplements can help. My preference is to have equal amounts of chondroitin and glucosamine with a potent curcumin (turmeric) extract and solid doses of fish oils. Of these chondroitin, sulphate is the most important as it helps support several joint healing processes damaged by arthritis. In most cases, I start with 1,600mg of chondroitin and glucosamine plus
curcumin to help improve cartilage function. Chondroitin is so effective that it is now available in Europe on prescription. During the past six months, I have been helping a man in his 70s with long-term knee osteoarthritis with some damage from his rugby years. He was really struggling with pain and mobility and in his own words is now 95% better. All he has now is a few niggles. The key is to use multiple measures that target the processes that help maintain healthy joints. The answer is not diet or supplements. The answer is to stimulate dormant healing processes overwhelmed by degenerative changes to joints. Your body does the rest. John Arts (B.Soc.Sci, Dip Tch, Adv.Dip.Nut.Med) is a nutritional medicine practitioner and founder of Abundant Health Ltd. Feds call for honesty Adopt a methane target that science tells us will ensure no additional impact on global warming, not an unsubstantiated aspiration that will cause lasting damage to rural communities and the standard of living of all New Zealanders. That was the message from Federated Farmers to the Select Committee hearing on the Zero Carbon bill. “Federated Farmers agrees with the current text in the bill on the need to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide in the NZ agricultural industry by 2050,” Feds climate change spokesperson Andrew Hoggard said. “This ambitious support is in spite of the industry being heavily reliant on reliable energy supply and internal combustion-powered vehicles for transport, both of which produce carbon dioxide, and despite the task of agriculture reducing nitrous oxide to net-zero being incredibly challenging. Farmers ‘embrace this challenge’ because those two gases are long-lived and build up in the atmosphere, so New Zealand, and the world, needs to get those gases to net zero as quickly as possible. However, methane, which is belched by livestock, is a short-lived gas that produces almost no additional warming and flows in and out of the atmosphere if emitted at a constant rate. The science says NZ agriculture needs to reduce methane by about 0.3 per cent a year, or about 10 per cent by 2050, to have no additional warming effect — or in other words a zero-carbon equivalent. Yet, a 10 per cent target has been set for 2030, much earlier than for any other sector of society, and up to 47 per cent methane reductions by 2050. Mr Hoggard told the Select Committee that appears to be because it seems easier to tell people to consume less
animal-based protein than it is to cut back on trips to Bali. “If that is the case, then let’s be open and honest and admit the agriculture sector is being asked to do more than its share.” The minister challenged those disagreeing with the proposed targets to explain why he shouldn’t follow the advice of the IPCC. Federated Farmers provided three main reasons: • A key piece of advice in the relevant IPCC’s 2018 report was not to use the numbers from that report as precise national targets. • The report also recommended a much lower target for nitrous oxide, but Federated Farmers is ignoring that as it is a long-lived gas. • The report modelled numerous pathways that all achieved the 1.5-degree warming target. In some pathways, biogenic methane actually increased. Economists pondered those pathways to work out the least cost to the globe of achieving the target, not the least cost to New Zealand. “This report was clearly not designed to be copied and pasted into our domestic legislation. Modelling on what is the least cost to the economy for New Zealand to do its part hasn’t been done. Planting trees with a 30-year life before harvest is only a temporary solution, and blanketing productive farmland with pines kills off jobs, spending and inhabitants that rural communities depend on.”

Get your waste away Avoiding system failure Septic tanks prevent the suspended solids in household effluent from entering the disposal system. The escape of excessive suspended solids from a septic tank causes clogging of the disposal system and is the most common cause of early failure. There are three main processes that take place in the septic tank: 1. The heavier, solid particles settle to the bottom of the tank forming a sludge layer. 2. Lighter materials such as fat and grease float to the surface forming a scum layer. 3. Within the septic tank, there is little or no oxygen, and anaerobic bacteria (bugs that can live without oxygen) break down some of the solids. This helps to reduce the build-up of sludge in the tank. The effluent that leaves a welloperating septic tank contains only the smaller particles that are less likely to rapidly clog the disposal system. An effluent filter will allow only the smaller solids to enter your disposal system and is a relatively cheap way to significantly reduce the possibility of the early failure of your disposal system. Most modern septic tanks should have a filter installed on their outlet. With very little modification, effluent filters can be installed on the outlets of older septic tanks. When the effluent leaves the tank, it is only partially treated.
The natural processes occurring within the soils below the disposal system carry out the final treatment. The type and size of the disposal system used are normally determined by the site conditions, groundwater level and soil type. Soakage trench and bed systems are the most common type of effluent disposal systems used in association with a septic tank. Perforated pipes, or in older systems field tiles, are laid in shallow trenches filled with gravel. Effluent flows out of the holes in the pipe and soaks into the surrounding soil. Beds are wider and shallower than normal trenches, but should only be used where it is not possible to use trenches. Every trench or bed system that has more than one pipe for effluent disposal will have a distribution box for even distribution. It is important that all the outlets from the distribution box to the disposal pipes are at the same level. Even a small difference can result in the failure of a trench or bed due to overloading. Evapo-Transpiration Seepage Systems
are normally installed where soils have poor soakage and are designed to use both soil soakage and selected plants for effluent disposal. The plants must like wet feet as they take up some of the effluents and use the nutrients to grow while the liquid
evaporates through their leaves. The disposal area needs to be properly planted to prevent effluent from running off during wet periods and causing a problem. A list of recommended plants can be obtained from your local council.

Upgrading septic standards If you live in the country, coastal area or a small rural town, your household effluent including toilet, shower, kitchen and laundry wastewater, probably drains into an on-site treatment system, and from there into the ground somewhere in your backyard. The standard on-site household effluent system has two parts — treatment and disposal. Treatment systems commonly used for household effluent include septic tanks and a group of treatment plants known as Aerated Wastewater Treatment Systems (AWTS). Treatment plants that use sand and textile filters to provide advanced treatment of effluent are also becoming increasingly popular. When the effluent leaves a treatment system, it is only partially treated. Final treatment is carried out by the bacteria that are in the soil below the effluent disposal system. The main purpose of the disposal system is to keep the effluent in the soil within the disposal area, so this final treatment happens. A variety of disposal systems are available, with each being designed to suit different site conditions and soil types. The correct operation and continued maintenance of your on-site system are very important. If neglected, it can pollute groundwater and streams, puts
you and your neighbours’ health at risk, and these issues can be expensive to fix. Information is available on your local council website outlining the way the various systems work, what is required to keep them operating effectively, and how to look after your effluent treatment and disposal system. Guidelines on what is required to keep them operating effectively can also be found. Information is available on topics such as discharges to land and water, on-site domestic wastewater discharges, wastewater network and treatment plant discharges, production land discharges, stormwater discharges, industrial and trade wastewater discharges. Each council has its own rules and guidelines, and it is important to note that you must ensure your septic system meets the requirements specific for the region it is in. Each district council may have their own bylaws regarding on-site sewage systems and property owners need to be aware of these requirements.

Getting the best in wastewater treatment Buying any type of wastewater treatment or septic tank system is a significant investment, so it’s essential to make the right choice for you and your circumstances. The BioPod sewage treatment system delivers the lowest lifecycle costs by using quality components and by utilising nature to do the work, not high-energy air blowers and other machinery. At the heart of the Biolytix process is the BioPod, a unique and patented method of treating household wastewater to a level that is suitable for beneficial irrigation of lawns and gardens. The BioPod works by mimicking the way nature breaks down waste, which is far more efficient and less energy-intensive than conventional wastewater treatment. Inside the BioPod is a layered filter bed, engineered to quickly separate the solids from the liquid sewage and to provide a stable environment for the micro and macro organisms that break down the separated solid waste into a stable humic product. The organisms, including tiger worms introduced to the BioPod on commissioning, ensure the entire filter bed is naturally aerated, eliminating the smell often associated with septic tanks and with mechanically aerated wastewater systems. A major advantage of the BioPod is that it is not reliant on complex or expensive machinery to run. It has a minute, but robust, low energy and low
volume air pump, which ensures the ambient air in the BioPod is constantly refreshed providing an abundance of available oxygen supply for the aerobic organisms that do all the work in the filter. The blower only consumes 0.12 kW hours a day (approximately three cents a day), which is very low compared to other conventional aerated wastewater systems, which typically consume 10 to 20 times this. The BioPod is extremely reliable but has an audible and visual alarm installed to let you know of any irregularities within the system. Biolytix is Maori-owned and has developed its business model around the mauri (life force). Owner Karl Geiseler is passionate about sustainability, and as kaitiaki of our environment, he believes that we need to be acting responsibly to ensure longevity. “It prompted us to research the needs of marae and papakainga housing. Our work with Ngati Pikiao on a housing development on the shores of Lake Rotoiti, which involved the upgrading of the marae and surrounding whare septic tanks.” As winners of the 2017 NZ Hi-Tech Awards for the Callaghan
Innovation award, judges were blown away that nature was the Hi-Tech winning formula. Today, Biolytix technology is being used in domestic households across NZ, Australia and the Cook Islands, as well as larger commercial installations like the luxurious Six Senses Fiji Resorts

CROP & PASTURE PREP Work visa changes
Horticulture New Zealand has welcomed changes to temporary work visas that simplify the immigration system and recognise that overseas workers play a significant role in industries such as horticulture. “The changes mean that it will be more straightforward to hire skilled workers from overseas to work in areas of New Zealand where there are few New Zealanders available for the work,’ says HortNZ chief executive, Mike Chapman. “At the same time, the changes recognise the need to employ New Zealanders wherever possible but appreciate this is not always possible. New Zealand’s primary sector is worth more than $46 billion in exports a year. The temporary work visa changes will help ensure our growing industry has access to skilled workers, particularly at peak planting and harvest times.” Mr Chapman says HortNZ and other representative groups have been lobbying for changes to the current complex and unfair system for many years. “The changes will take effect over the next couple of years as the detail is worked out with industry input. We will be working through the detail over the next couple of days and providing analysis to our grower members before the end of the week.”
Federated Farmers is confident the simpler and streamlined temporary work visa process will deliver for the regions. “Our message that workforce and related problems experienced by the big cities are not necessarily those experienced in the provinces have been taken on board — we congratulate the government,” Feds employment spokesperson Chris Lewis says. “The changes will help ensure farmers and others can more easily employ migrants when they need them, and when the options for taking on and training suitable New Zealanders are exhausted.” By ditching the ANZSCO skill level classifications, there is much greater scope for a migrant worker to achieve career progression on our farms. “The changes incentivise farmers to invest in training and supporting

migrant employees because there’s a greater chance of keeping them than currently exists. We also acknowledge the government for its compassionate and pragmatic approach in reinstating the family entitlement for lower-skilled visa holders. The migrant worker’s children can be educated here, and their partner can get an open work visa. “It is a positive for rural communities to have settled and content families, not just single men who may well be sending all their money home to their family.” The government has indicated the dairy industry is a likely early target group for one of the new sector agreements, containing specific terms and conditions for recruiting foreign workers. “Federated Farmers looks forward to working with other Team Ag partners and the government to help get this sector agreement right.”

The answer was less about raw power and more about a reduced footprint, both literally and figuratively. Exceeding strict emissions standards, consuming less fuel and additive, and spreading the weight of the machine to have less impact on the substrate of the soil during operations were all core factors plumbed in from day one. The difference, therefore, is not in the size of the 9RX, which is available either as a four-wheel-drive variant or as a wide-tracked ‘crawler’, but in its performance figures. Under the hood, John Deere has partnered up with Cummins, one of the top diesel engine manufacturers in the world, selecting their X15 turbo diesel as the top of the range power plant for the nine series. This 15-litre engine comes equipped with an electronically actuated, infinitely variable boost turbocharger and advanced exhaust recirculation technology, filtration and selective catalytic reduction to cut particulate matter output down to near zero. Despite its size, the big X15 is economical,

tackling the seriously big jobs and handling seriously big implements with effortless reserves of torque. Outside, it’s all utility, with ease of access for maintenance another key takeaway from farmers, now plumbed into the design of the biggest Deere. There’s a versatile three-point hitch and 1,000 rpm PTO to hook up with even the largest of harrows, seed drills or bale and silage ordnance, but the eye is drawn, at least on the 9620RX model, to those triangular treads with their innovative suspension
system. This system increases the contact patch of the whole machine, spreading the weight and achieving a twofold outcome; less disruption and compaction of the soil, and a smooth ride for the operator, who also enjoys the benefits of the very comfortable and well laid out CommandView III series cab. Lessons from making this giant John Deere step lightly will no doubt flow through to the rest of their range as well, making it a fitting flagship for the green and yellow brand.

Odds and clods busted down to size by Andy Bryenton
Unlike with other agricultural implements such as the plough, we know who invented the harrow in ancient times. As the growth of grains other than rice was popularised in the northern Chinese empire in around 500AD, new tools were needed to create a good seedbed, and break up the earth without causing the formation of hardpan. Enter Jia Sixie, an ambitious official in the equivalent to our modern department of agriculture, Jia wrote about a plan to use a specialist tool to break up the clods of earth disrupted by ploughing, creating a finer tilth layer, preventing the growth of weeds and the spread of insect pests. The first such advancement in Europe was brought to England by William the Conqueror with his French knights in 1066. So important was the harrow to improved farming (which, of course, fed and paid for more knights) that it’s depicted in the Bayeux tapestry, alongside the battle of Hastings itself. Following this came the spring-tine harrow, developed by the Germans in the 1600s. Its creator, by the surname of Ecker, was granted a title and coat of arms for his innovation, which took the concept of a horse-drawn harrow further than the mesh of wooden staves and metal claws, or chains with spikes that had come before. Still, the aim was to follow after the plough, breaking up

large lumps of heavy earth into a peasized, less dense consistency to make a perfect seedbed. These bigger, heavier harrows also covered up seed after sowing and could be used to roughly disrupt weed growth, giving seed a better chance. Mighty disc harrows, larger again, were used in the plains of the early United States to break-in previously unfarmed land. However, it’s thought that their overuse in soils unsuitable for western-style farming may have contributed to the dust bowl disaster so vividly written about in The Grapes of Wrath. With the advent of the tractor and hydraulic power, the modern harrow was born, incorporating several sets of independently turning tines. Since the 1960s, the use of this kind of harrow has exploded. It comes with the benefit of not turning over the layers of soil but keeping them stratiated, thus keeping dormant weed and pest seeds from competing with precision-sown crops. mIND YOUr SpeeD ArOUND SCHOOL bUSeS

Incumbent Directors Donna Smit and Andy Macfarlane, along with Philipp Haas and Cathy Quinn have been announced as the Independently Assessed Candidates for the 2019 Fonterra Farmer Directors’ election. There are two different ways that Shareholders can stand for the board — as Independently Assessed Candidates or as Non-Assessed Candidates. Nominations for Non-Assessed Candidates, where farmers can stand as a candidate for the board with the support of 35 different shareholders closed at noon on Friday, September 27. Andy Macfarlane and Donna Smit are seeking re-election and chose to participate in the Independent Assessment Process. As re-standing directors, they automatically go through to the ballot. Philipp Haas and Cathy Quinn were recommended by the Independent Selection Panel after their assessment process. The three-member panel comprises of Tony Carter, chairman of Air New Zealand and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Joan Withers chair of Mercury NZ and The Warehouse Group, and Rob Campbell chair of Skycity Entertainment Group, Summerset, Tourism Holdings and WEL Networks. Report trivialises dairy sector The recent NZIER report trivialises the significant role the dairy sector plays in New Zealand’s economy and fails to look at the specifics of the government’s freshwater package, according to DairyNZ. DairyNZ chief executive Dr Tim Mackle said the report, commissioned by Fish & Game, Forest & Bird and Greenpeace, is less an economic report and more a high-level commentary on the dairy sector’s role in the economy and paints an inaccurate picture. “It is yet another case of environmental lobbyists targeting dairy farmers who are people trying to do the right thing by the environment and who are actively working to make changes on-farm to protect it. By singling out dairy farmers, they are ignoring other contributors to water quality and, therefore, are limiting our ability to actually fix the problems where they exist. “The NZIER report trivialised dairy’s role in the economy three per cent of GDP equates to 28 per cent of merchandise exports and one-fifth of goods and services exports coming from the dairy sector. “The NZIER report does not analyse the economic benefits of dairy to regional communities — which is a critical aspect of dairy farming’s contribution to NZ Inc. “Dairying is the engine of the regions, in terms of income and jobs.
For example, it is the top income earner in Waikato, West Coast and Southland. We saw the latest MPI Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries report, which showed dairy makes up $18.1b of $46.4b exports to June 2019. Dairy exports were up $1.47b last year — this has flow-on effects to our communities, where we employ 46,000 people on and off-farm. Local Government New Zealand recently completed an advisory report on the Essential Freshwater Package that showed that national limits for nitrogen and phosphorus would potentially impose very large costs on agriculture. “In that report, it referred to a Waikato modelling study, which found that landuse change was required to achieve the nitrogen and phosphorus limits proposed — with changes resulting in a dairy revenue loss of $140m per year,” said Dr Mackle. “As a sector, we are solutionsfocussed and have been for years. Our farmers have been voluntarily working to look after their land and waterways. Our Water Accord shows a range of great progress, including fencing 98% of significant dairy waterways and

stock crossing points or culverts for almost all waterways nationwide. We all acknowledge there is more work to be
done, but we need to work together and recognise when good work is happening and allow time for change to occur.”
