Honouring a life well lived. At Morris & Morris our focus has always been at providing a funeral that honours the life of the loved one that has passed away. It is important to us that we keep providing our community with the ability to say goodbye in a manner that is representative of the loved one that has passed away.
As qualified Funeral Directors we know that not having a proper goodbye can have severe implications for the family members who are left behind. Giving family members the opportunity to honour the life that was lived, not only encourages but delivers on healthy grieving.

Of further interest to local voters is the pre-election report prepared by the council’s chief executive officer Simon Weston. This document lays out the challenges and opportunities which face the incoming leadership of Whangārei District, which includes the entire span of Bream Bay down to the border with Mangawhai. “With the stage set for significant change in coming years, we have a great opportunity to work together to help shape the future of our district and get the best outcomes for our people and place,” says WDC chief executive Simon Weston Mr Weston notes many forthcoming changes in his pre-election report, which

and changing population,” Mr Weston stated in his report. However, there are challenges on the horizon, especially in the space of local government reform. It has many aspects, including Three Waters, the replacement of the Resource Management Act, the impending reform of the civil defence and emergency management bills, and a wide-ranging programme of local government reform some say will result in amalgamation. “This term promises to bring the greatest changes to local government New Zealand has seen since 1989,” Mr Weston said. “Thir ty-three years ago, the government initiated wide-ranging local

A willing captain u by Ann van Engelen
When it comes to life experience, there is more to Northland Rescue Helicopter captain Susan Dinkelacker than meets the eye. Sue has flown for emergency medical services since 2001, despite time away to fly offshore oil rigs and to focus on art — her award-winning sculptures and wood carving in particular. “I grew up in South Africa in a family of glider pilots, and mum had a commercial aeroplane licence,” says Sue. “Dad designed, built and flew his own sailplanes, which won championships and set records. I remember at fiveyears-old telling my friends how to catch a five-metre thermal, and at the end of high school, I wanted to be a pilot. Dad said being a girl, I was unlikely to get a pilot job as there were many militarytrained men pilots available. “He advised me to get a job that paid and fly gliders for fun on weekends. I studied and worked as a secretary while setting three world gliding records which
stand to this day. After saving money, I left for America and had my first helicopter flight at 24 years old, and I was fascinated. “I returned to South Africa and worked for dad, telling him I wanted to go solo in a helicopter. I could afford only one half-hour helicopter lesson per fortnight, and then the secretary of the flying school left, so I got the job and was paid in lessons, which is how I got my private licence. “The South African government gave one grant a year for a commercial licence, and I got it and a big break with the largest helicopter company in the country flying a 22-seater Sikorsky 61, something like an off-shore flying bus. “I ended up flying logs out of the forest underslung under the helicopter in the United States. an amazing experience, and upon returning to South Africa, I gained my captaincy and met my husband, Pete, a mechanical draughtsman. “After sailing across the Atlantic, up to South America, the Caribbean and the USA, we decided to settle in New Zealand in 2007, and Northland became home. My current role at Northland Rescue Helicopter began in late 2019, and I love it. “There are times with the rescue chopper when you are really busy, and it takes all of your energy. When you are flying in storms and clouds, you have to be accurate and disciplined, but it’s what we train for, and we prepare well.

I was born and raised in Mangawhai, and have been here my whole life. I started playing soccer when I was 15 and used to be captain, coach and manager of the Mangawhai open grade soccer team,” Patrick says. “I still like to keep fit and active. Grants help local rescue u by Amy Fifita
Mangawhai’s Helping Paws is due to have a facelift following recent grants from the Kaipara District Council and the Department of Internal Affairs. “The Kaipara District Council grant is going to be incredibly useful, and we are at a point where storage is a significant issue. We buy all of our food and kitty litter in by the pallet load, and so we have large volumes coming in each week,” says founder Megan Denize. “We need to store all of those supplies. The money that has been kindly donated by the Kaipara District Council is going to go towards buying two nine square metre storage sheds, which will be fitted out with shelving. “We have hit a bottleneck with storage where we don’t have enough space for everything that we need. The grant is incredibly gratefully received.
“We have been constantly juggling and moving things around in the rescue centre, and we are at capacity. This will increase our capacity, and increase the volumes that we can bring in, and buying in bulk helps to lower our costs. We will be able to bring in larger quantities and store everything safely. “Kaipara District Council has two grants, which we apply annually for. We applied to the Community Fund, and we were successful in having the grant awarded.” The grant from the KDC amounted to $4,415. The rescue has been awarded a further grant of $30,000 from the Department of Internal Affairs, which

will go towards two isolation rooms and a new reception and entrance area. “The grant funding has come through to us already, so we are waiting on our builder to confirm his availability. We expect the building to be starting in a month’s time.” Megan says that having extra space will increase the capacity of animals it can rescue and is streamlining systems and processes to become a wellfunded facility. “We are always looking at ways to help more people, cats and kittens and raise healthy and happy kittens in larger numbers year on year.” The Mangawhai’s Helping Paws catchment

is across Northland and down to the Bombay Hills. “In the local area, we have seen very few cats and kittens given away and certainly have made an impact going out and desexing locally. Our catchment area is so broad it is difficult to assess the impact across Auckland and Northland. “Mangawhai Helping Paws was set up about three years ago. I moved to Mangawhai four years ago and set up the rescue soon after I moved here. “It has been good, and it has grown immensely. It grew from having one kitten in my spare bathroom to a full rescue centre, and we are now rescuing around 500 cats and kittens annually.” ¢

August 12 2022 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER
Segments of delight u by Liz Clark
If there was ever a more versatile citrus fruit, the mandarin takes centre stage with its cultivar range covering most of the year for fruiting. Found mainly growing throughout the North Island, developments in cultivars have fruit production spanning into summer, with some varieties holding fruit for up to two months. If you love mandarins and don’t want to go to the supermarket in the off-season for citrus, then spoil yourself and choose several types to get that fix. Mandarins were initially developed in China and later cultivated in Japan, Vietnam, the Middle East and North Africa. The species is divided into four distinct groups, Mediterranean, originating in the Mediterranean Basin,
King, originating in Vietnam; Satsuma from Japan and Tangerines, which came from Algeria. It’s from these cultivars a wide range of varieties are now available to home gardeners. The mandarin’s pumpkin-shaped fruit, with its easy-to-peel skin and sweet-tasting segmented flesh, provides a ready source of vitamin C intake. Its versatility means that it can be used in salads, desserts and as a snack with other fruit, cheese and vegetables. Since it’s a citrus variety, these trees thrive in acidic conditions. The root system is close to the soil surface, so
ensuring the plants are kept watered during very dry periods is essential for fruit production and robust growth. Provide a warm sunny site, lots of compost and organic matter in freedraining soil. The best time to plant is during the autumn. However, late winter and early spring are also viable. Add regular additions of citrus fertiliser and aged cow or horse manure to keep the tree provided with the nutrients it needs. A deep mulch around the base, avoiding the trunk, will keep moisture levels constant during dry periods.
Water when the first 10cm of the soil is dry. Mandarins can be planted in pots but will require a lot more care than trees planted in the garden. Use a high-quality container mix and compost to ensure the plant retains vigorous growth and vitality. Daily watering will be necessary to prevent the soil from drying out and the plant’s roots from losing the ability to uptake moisture. Trees should be repotted every couple of years to keep them healthy. Talk to your local garden specialist or search online for more information. ¢

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Meet Scott Hargood, the owner of Hargood Renovations and Extensions based in Whangārei. Working in the building industry for more than 15 years, Scott has been finding and filling the gap in the renovation market and seeing the potential to help clients enjoy their homes for many more years. Scott has now brought EasyBuild to Northland. EasyBuild is a New Zealandowned and operated family business with the factory based in Upper Hutt, Wellington. The company provides quality, modular homes for Kiwi living — homes that might be the future of housing in Aotearoa. EasyBuild specialises in flat-packed homes that can be built up to twice as fast on-site as other new home options — at less cost and with no compromise on quality. Their homes are more than twice as airtight as conventional builds, with less than three air changes an hour, compared to 6–10 an hour in conventionally built new homes. It all translates to more money in your pocket with lower bills for heating and cooling your home. To make it even better, building waste is reduced by two-thirds, and each build is extra weathertight with a rigid air barrier and ventilated cavity. These are all features you don’t commonly find in comparable homes. Suppose you’re unsure about how an EasyBuild home works. If you can walk to a section, one of EasyBuild’s modern, modular home designs can be built on it. In what will be another huge surprise to

TO BUILD OR RENOVATE Mats for cattle comfort
as well as necessary vehicle movements and the power of a water blaster when necessary, all without fragmenting. With new rules and best practice keeping cattle out of the mud as much as possible, perhaps rubber or synthetic matting systems are the right choices for your farm. As each installation is tailored for a particular situation, it’s best to talk to your local representatives in the shelter, barn and building industry to gauge what’s suitable for your herd. ¢
u by Andy Bryenton
New rules, introduced in 2019 for animal welfare off-pasture in winter, have led to changes in the rural sector, with one major innovation coming in the form of season-specific matted areas. “It is very important that dairy cattle can lie down and rest in all management systems, including on pasture, on crops, and in off-paddock facilities,” said National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee chair Dr Gwyneth Verkerk at the time of the changes to the Ministry of Primary Industry’s guidelines. “Dairy cattle like to lie down where it is comfortable and dry. They refuse to lie down on hard, wet or muddy ground and can become stressed as a result.” Farmers had already adapted to this in many regions and in many ways, utilising shelters, paddocks which were deliberately sacrificed and slated for replanting, and areas where cattle could be sociable and comfortable thanks to good drainage and softer surfaces. However, a very wet winter for 2022 has seen the rise of an alternative option. Rubber matting, complete with a high-grip surface and even, in some formats, air pockets like those in topflight sports shoes, has come to the rescue of farmers who need winter

p The show ring is no longer the only place cattle can relax on custom matting; this surfacing is now becoming popular for winter off-pasture housing
accommodation for their herds. Cattle love to get comfortable, but they are very conservative creatures and can sometimes be resistant to change. A system of matting that is easy on the hooves and provides a slip-free footing and ample room to lie down without surface water pooling is the key to having less stressed animals at this transitional time of the year. Farmers looking into this sort of solution for barn and pad coverage should check three big factors, say those who have taken the plunge. Aside from the all-important aspect of cost, the most important thing is comfort for cattle. Sharp edges, protruding metal
fixtures and sections that don’t join flush can be annoying for livestock and hence a headache for farmers. On the flip side, a uniform, grippy surface is good for hoof health. The last thing to consider is the ease of washdown and maintenance for matted areas. Will the way the matting fits together and covers the space allow for quick, simple washdown cycles and a lack of standing water thereafter? A good matting system should tolerate the weight and wear and tear of a whole herd,

p Roger Turner was intrigued with the bagpipes from a young age after discovering the history of the instrument for confusing enemy soldiers during the second world war
A Scottish touch u by Ann van Engelen
Roger Turner began learning the bagpipes at eight years old and now shares his love for the instrument through the Warkworth and Wellsford Pipe Band. “I grew up in Glen Innes, Auckland, and my father wanted me to play the trumpet, but my heart was the bagpipes,” says Roger. “I had a go at trumpet and wasn’t good at it, maybe I made myself useless, so dad gave up and let me learn the pipes. Mum purchased me a set of pipes, and I learned through the Auckland Districts
“
“I later joined the Ōtāhuhu and Districts Pipe Band but stopped playing for a while when I got married because my ex-wife didn’t like me playing. Years later, just before I remarried, I moved to Warkworth and started a band with a Scottish friend. “We began with a bass drummer, two pipers and a tenor drummer and met at
but we changed to the Warkworth and Wellsford Pipe Band in 1992. “We are known as a family-orientated band, and encourage the younger players to enter competitions and go to events like the Waipū New Year’s Day games, which is a great experience. “We are always looking for new members because we start teaching
One young lad went to Otago University and was the first person to gain a diploma for piping Pipe Band. Although, at first, they didn’t sound too good, I practised outside, and was as proud as punch. “One day, our neighbour threw a bucket of water over the fence at me, and mum told him off. I remember the police arriving, and a couple of months later, I saw an article about it in the newspaper, and he got a wrap around the knuckles for his behaviour. We all laughed about it in the end.
the Warkworth Primary School. Our first event was the opening of the Mahurangi East Community Hall at Snells Beach, and the people loved our performance, and the band grew. “There is nothing better than having a full band, and we then acquired Armstrong Tartan uniforms from a band up north that went into recession and are still using them today. We were originally called the Kowhai Pipes and Drums,

children at around 14 years old, and then they go off to university or to work elsewhere, and we have to find new band members to replace them. “We often work alongside the Hibiscus Coast and District Pipe Band because we have drummers and they have pipers. There is a huge pipe band camaraderie throughout the world, which opens up many opportunities for players.

p Teaching others to play the various instruments is all a part of the pipe band tradition to keep the historic music alive
p As part of the Warkworth and Wellsford Pipe Band, Roger attends a variety of events, such as the Waipū New Year’s Day celebrations
p Competing in competitions or playing alongside other pipe bands often creates opportunities for band members like Monica and Thomas Bennett to travel
“
We are known as a family-orientated band, and encourage the younger players to enter competitions and go to events like the Waipū New Year’s Day games, which is a great experience “One young lad went to Otago University and was the first person to gain a diploma for piping. “I think they are a mystery type of instrument because you can play somewhere, and the wind carries the sound. “During the Covid lockdowns, I went to Snells Beach and played my pipes for Anzac Day, and the whole area heard the music but didn’t know where it was coming from. At the time, people were encouraged to walk out to the gate and stand in remembrance, but I chose the beach, and it was beautiful. “When our band plays at the Kowhai Festival and other events, we are always well received, and people often dance along with us. “Bagpipes originated in Egypt, I believe, in the BC days, and were made from sheepskin or elk hide. There are now a lot of synthetic bags that have a zip, which you can open to clean them out or dry them after playing.
”
“Some people used to treat their leather bags with whisky, which made it fun as they played. The Irish then took them over but they couldn’t master it, so the Scottish had a go, and perfected it. “Basically, bagpipes have four reeds, three for the drums and one for the chanter, where your fingers go. To play, you blow the bag up like a balloon, and when they get to a certain pressure, you give the bag a quick nudge, and that starts everything up. “When you blow in, you put the bag under your arm and play as you push your arm down, and that pushes the air back into the chanter. As you release your arm and blow in again the bag refills with air. “The instrument has a big history. I think that is why I took a liking to them. I was told it used to be called an instrument of war because it confused the Germans at one stage during battle. “They could hear pipes but didn’t know where the sound was coming from.
At times, they thought it was behind them, and at one stage, they thought they were surrounded. “It takes seven years to become a good piper, and we would love new members to join us no matter the age, especially retired people who want to come for jam sessions or teach. “The tuition is free if you are in the band. Two children in our band, Anna and John, are doing amazingly well. Another young lad who came was, at times, our temporary pipe major and had to make decisions and direct the band. It was amazing to see his confidence build. “My wife June is a drum major, and my eldest son started playing the snare drum, so we had a little band with him as drum sergeant. The drum major leads from the front and is in charge of the band on parade — what she says goes. The sergeant is the lead drummer and, most of the time, a tutor as well. “My son Isaac is also a good piper. He sleeps and breathes bagpipes and
travelled to France and played at a big festival, as did another family we know. At times, people go overseas and receive free accommodation and food to play for their hosts all around the world. “We had one family of 10 children come, and they did Highland dance as well. It was amazing to see them bond through the music. We would form a circle, and they danced beautifully in the centre as we played. It was beautiful, and we want to get those experiences into the community. “I have been a pipe major for about 20 years. It is something you can do for life, and when I teach, I always try to make it fun. “We practise at the Shoesmith Hall on the corner of Shoesmith Street and Brown Road, Warkworth from 7pm every Monday except long weekends because they are family times together. “People can check out the Warkworth & Wellsford Pipeband Facebook page for more info.” ¢

A Hollywood evening u by Ann van Engelen
The teachers and students at Otamatea High School recently celebrated the final school ball for some, and the continuation of study for others with a Hollywoodthemed night of dance. “Around 150 students attended the ball, and it was a fabulous night,” says school principal Dirk Smyth. “The school hall looked fantastic, decorated by staff and students and everyone had a fabulous night of dancing, and there was a wonderful spread of food for all to enjoy. There was fun and laughter
and lots of dancing happening on the night by all who attended, and lots of memories were made for students to look back on in the future. “Students wore an array of outfits, including formal and less dressed, suits and ties, evening wear and more casual attire from across the decades.” ¢
p Luke Vercoe and Analiese Allen took out the Beau and Belle title on the night
576 Millbrook Road, Waipu
p Lara Mckenzie and Lucas Reid were named the Cutest Couple at the event
p Kate Cotching and John Hampshire were named Prince and Princess of the Ball
p Austin Mickell and Maia Fairburn were crowned King and Queen of the school ball
