For Angela Bird, her family’s recent move to Waipū meant the start of a new career, which began with her discovery of kinesiology, a therapy based on an ancient Chinese philosophy that helps balance the energy blockages in the body. Angela helps people who have physical, emotional or mental trauma from life experiences. She says she loves nothing more than helping her clients to feel better within themselves and loves the fact that the property she brought with her husband Ben accommodates her new-found career. She works incredibly hard for us and I, along with many other people, believe she is very deserving of being acknowledged with this award.”

Libby also organised the free washing machine and laptop programme, saving old washing machines and laptops from landfill, having them fixed and donating them to families in need.

“I love the preschool events in Wellsford and seeing the little children make new friends at a young age. It is so nice to see two little children meet each other and go off holding hands to play together, and then the mums and dads become friends too.

Nominations for the Kiwi Bank New Zealander of the Year Awards close on Wednesday, August 31. Go to nominate on the nzawards.org.nz website and follow the prompts. Choose the New Zealand Local Hero of the Year category and nominate your person of choice. ¢

“The award is for individuals who have shown selflessness and determination to make a difference in their community,” says nominator Wellsford resident Jolene McKewen.

“One thing Libby created is the Northern Helping Hands Facebook page, which helps people pass on the items they no longer need for free to other community members. Anything that still has life left in it can be given away through the page, redirecting things from the landfill and helping people who may need that particular item. “During Covid, she pulled off the Christmas Trail treasure hunt for families from the Mangawhai, Wellsford and Maungatūroto areas, and every child found a gift. She hosted the Easter Egg Hunt and has begun many other community initiatives throughout Kaipara, such as the Mangawhai Book Train, the Wellsford Preschool Soccer and also the Wellsford Sensory Sessions for Preschoolers, to name a few things.”

u by Liz CoveringClark more than 110 species globally, fuchsias have a special place in the hearts of horticulturalists and gardeners alike. Most species are found in South America, the Pacific Islands and throughout New Zealand. The lush green foliage and ballgown-like flowers thrive in the shaded parts of the garden bringing delicate colour from spring to autumn. A diverse plant, it can be used for hanging baskets, pots and large containers to shrubs planted in a shady spot in the garden. Fuchsia flowers come in bright shades of white, pink, red, purple and two-tone combinations. For hanging baskets, choose a large-flowering variety that will hang down and provide a cheerful greeting to visitors to the home. Depending on the cultivar, heights range from 30cm to two metres and come in many varying forms, including prostrate groundcovers, shrubs and small trees. Whatever is chosen, all these plants need specific conditions for robust, vigorous growth. Location is important to keep plants growing during winter and into the flowering season. They will grow in cold and temperate climates, provided shelter from frost is provided to prevent the leaves from damage and possible death of the plant.

Spring is always a time of colour renewal for the garden and the deck — and you can sparkle it up with fuchsias.

¢

For containers and hanging baskets, provide a good-quality free-draining potting mix with a slow-release fertiliser or liquid feed during the flowering stage. Spent flowers should be clipped off to encourage new ones to develop. Keep the soil medium moist and avoid allowing it to dry out or become too saturated.

Belles of the shade

Watering is important for containergrown plants — every second day is ideal. In the garden, ensure shrubs and trees are mulched during the summer to prevent the soil from drying out. Avoid placing mulch up against the trunk — water when the first 10cm is dry. As an aside, New Zealand has the smallest-growing species of fuchsia in the world. Fuchsia procumbens is available in nurseries as a ground cover, an ideal alternative if you prefer natives to exotic ground covers. Fastgrowing, it will provide living colour in the shade of established trees during the warmer months.

Ideally, a situation sheltered from strong winds, with shade and protection from strong sunlight, should be provided. There are some sun-tolerant species available, but in the main most are shade-lovers.

“The blockages sit in the body and affect organs or muscles. As therapists, we are very receptive to the body’s energy points, and we can feel the energy shift when we do the balance. As you move the energy around the body, there is often a shift in emotions too. ”We can do more than 300 different types of balances. It is a very powerful and profound technique, facilitating the body to heal itself.” Angela says people often go to her when they are generally not feeling themselves.

p Angela Bird enjoys helping people on their mission to help heal their bodies through her kinesiology clinic positive energies in Waipũ

“During the last lockdown, we decided to move north, and we found a beautiful property in Waipū and relocated in January, and I recently opened my kinesiology clinic. When I discovered kinesiology when a friend thought it would help me after going through a very stressful time in early 2019. For my first balance, I didn’t know what to expect as I didn’t know anything about kinesiology as it is still quite an unknown therapy.

by Ann van Engelen Angela Bird grew up in both Ireland and the UK prior to moving to New Zealand with her family six years ago and has since discovered the art of healing through kinesiology.

“The energy is related to the five elements — fire, earth, metal, water and wood. Acupuncture also uses the same theory and is based on these traditions.

“I found the experience and the effect of the balance made life really profound and in many ways lifechanging. It interested me because it is about healing ourselves through using our body’s energy. It is based on the Chinese Meridian theory, concentrating on clearing the energy lines which are running through the body.” The theory is based on an ancient Chinese philosophy of ‘qi’ flowing through the body.

“My husband Ben and I moved to Auckland with our two children and would visit friends at their bach in Mangawhai frequently, and we came to love the area,” says Angela.

“We treat physical pain that may be being held in one area and find it is often emotional pain sitting somewhere else in the body. Change can happen after one balance or a few. “It is amazing how the mind and body can guide us. People can contact me at

If your home has a swimming or spa pool, choosing window dressings that allow for full pool observance is something worth seriously considering. Heating and cooling of a house have become easier with the modern-day heat pumps and air conditioning units, although some people still enjoy the hum of a fan. Whatever choice you make, research the running costs whether you are on solar or connected to your local electricity provider. Right down to the pattern and colour options on your driveway, there is always something for everyone when it comes to choices, and concrete is a popular one.

Vegetable garden — Have you seen the price of broccoli and tomatoes? Yes, there will be digging and planting, weeding and slug removal, but think of the savings. As well as the delicious taste, home-grown veggies beat factory-farmed imported produce hands down and even contain more vitamins and other goodies. Barbecue area — Honestly, think of all the cooking you won’t have to do! With the grillmaster chief in charge, you’ll enjoy summertime meals without lifting a finger. Modern barbies can do all those slow-cooked dishes you’ve seen on TV chef programmes. Don’t ask about the dishes; do ask about the optional rotisserie that can accommodate a whole pig. For a bonus argument, go out for pulled pork or brisket and casually mention that you can cook this with the right kettle and offset smoker. Wood-fired pizza oven — All of the arguments above apply, but with Italian flair. Use a lot of expansive hand gestures and mention words like ‘artisanal’, ‘Tuscan’ and ‘formaggio’. Shade sail cover — Remember that last sunburn, when you dozed off on the deck reading the latest James Patterson opus? You said ‘never again’ — so let’s hoist the sails for summer. Easier to install than a fixed pergola, able to be taken down to clean and stowed during storm season, and provides a nesting spot up high so the cat can fulfil his dreams of being lord of all he surveys. Fish pond water feature — It’s meditative and relaxing, and if reports of exotic foreign day spas are correct, the fish will nibble at your toes in a pleasing manner. As an added bonus, should society collapse due to another round of petrol price hikes, you don’t have far to go with a rod and reel. Swimming pool — With climate change making every year hotter, eventually, we will need a pool, so why not beat the rush? Modern robot vacuums and filters make it easier than ever to avoid the pool becoming a green pit of primordial ooze, from which new life may one day arise. It’s possible to stretch the truth to insist that swimming, the ultimate low-impact sport, may even help turn a dad bod into the image of a heroic lifeguard. ¢

A sorrowful backyard bereft of opportunities entertain can be there excuses to get what want Sometimes, excuses are just what you need to persuade that significant other who pays half the bills to give up on their ideas for a holiday in Bali or a new jet ski and really get behind some backyard projects. Here are the top arguments to deploy to get things rolling. Spa pool — Did you know that a soak in a good hot spa can relax muscle tension, relieve aches and pains, and even reduce blood pressure and the chance of a heart attack? Basically, not buying a spa pool is a recipe for complete physical collapse. Gently simmering your cares away also promotes better sleep, and that means less snoring.

a dismal sight as spring approaches, but

“The course covered everything about beauty therapy, including waxing, manicures, pedicures and facials, along with all other topics. My mum has her own beauty therapy businesses, and I think that is where my interest began. Watching mum inspired me to work hard and set up my own business.

“I officially opened on July 19 and was booked out for the first two weeks before I even had signage. “Being a people person, I enjoy giving my clients a personal touch and helping people feel great about themselves. My favourite and most popular service is brow shaping and tinting. Eyebrows are my forte because, to me, eyebrows shape your face and are the first thing people look at when they make eye contact with you.

“I qualified from the course in April 2012 and always had a dream to open a salon. It was just finding a good location and premises, and when this cabin became available by the Oasis Cafe at 198 Molesworth Drive, I jumped at the“Foropportunity.years,Iplanned in my head what I wanted when I opened my own salon, and now it is looking like the picture I had in my head. We painted the building black outside, and I have pink doors, and it looks very classy.

“I grew up on the Hibiscus Coast and made a move to Kaipara seven years ago to be close to my grandparents and get out of the big smoke,” says Alysha.

p Following in her mother’s footsteps, Alysha Galloway chose beauty therapy as a career when she was 16 years old

“I think I made the move at the right time. When I was 16 years old, I wanted to leave school, and my mum said I needed to study or get a job, so I signed up and completed a beauty therapy diploma with Elite Beauty and Spa.

“I offer treatments for males and females with all of my services, including facials and pedicures.”

“Encouraging people to focus on the mind, body and soul is also important, and I enjoy catering for all skin types and client concerns. I am passionate about my job and like that people can step out of their house and not have 100 things going on as they relax in my salon for a few minutes.

u by Ann van Engelen Alysha Galloway recently opened The Beauty Shop in Mangawhai after many years of dreaming and planning what a business would look like for her.

“Having correctly-shaped eyebrows transforms your face, and lash tints enhance your eyes and make them pop.

“I offer treatments for males and females with all of my services, including facials and pedicures. I invested in a spa pedicure chair, which is great for older clients as they get a massage and soak their feet at the same time.

Pampering in style

“To me, it is important for people to come and be pampered if they can afford it, especially with the stress people have nowadays. Even something little helps because right now, people are stuck in ruts after Covid, and they seem so busy.

“Laying on the bed for half an hour to get their brows done gives you a break. Children can’t interrupt, and you get a minute to yourself. It is often the little things that help you gain confidence and feel better about yourself.

“I was just 17 when I started beauty therapy school and was qualified at 19. It was well worth doing, and because I was so young, I enjoyed interacting with the older students, and I am still friends with many today. It has been nice to see them grow and start their own salons too.

“Outside of work hours, I enjoy time with my five-year-old son. He keeps me busy, and we enjoy gardening and going for walks, socialising and having breaks with my friends and family.

“I love seeing people of all ages become confident with the transformation of their skin turning over, and the scarring acne leaves be eliminated. Helping with skincare routines is also something I am pleased to be able to offer. I encourage people to use good quality products that encourage good skin, not cheap products that strip the skin bare.

“My passion is to help my clients look and feel beautiful, and I enjoy personalising each person’s treatment to suit their concerns. Not every person gets the same results, so it is important therapies are created unique for them.

“The area my shop is located in has a really nice feel to it, and we have a lot of passersby, especially with the cafe next“Wedoor.are close to the beach and have a pōhutukawa tree above the salon with tūī that come and sing and dance, which is lovely and adds a touch of nature.

“Between summer and winter, I suggest getting a facial every six to eight weeks, if you can afford it. Being comfortable in your own healthy skin means you often don’t feel the need to wear lots of make-up as you don’t have to cover blemishes and things.

“Starting small is good. From here, I want to grow my business and expand what I do now to help people with their skincare and personal grooming needs.”

Moving to Mangawhai seven years ago, Alysha is excited to have her new business, The Beauty Shop, now open

“My business motto is ‘Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself’, because I want my clients to be happy and comfortable in their own skin.

“Kaipara is a great place to live, and being in Mangawhai, there is a large dynamic of people of all ages. You have retired people coming up to their baches, young families moving here, and holidaymakers all year round.

“Some of the nicest things I have seen is people who had really bad acne gain confidence in themselves when we have rectified their skin problems. I personally had bad acne when I was young, and that is one reason I decided to pursue beauty therapy as a career, I wanted to help others.

“It is always nice to see people investing in themselves. We offer gift vouchers too, which is a nice option to let the person you care about choose the service they would like.

p Alysha is proud to be a part of the commercial progress that is happening in the Mangawhai and Kaipara areas

“It is quite common now for people to go without make-up. Getting facials done helps with this as they keep your skin healthy and give you a nice complexion. Keeping skin hydrated also helps eliminate ageing and gives your skin a healthy glow.

“There are a lot of beauty therapists in the surrounding area, which is nice because not every therapist suits every personality.

“As a beauty therapist, we get to build relationships with our community and help people invest in themselves and learn about using quality products. To me, beauty therapy is all about helping other people to increase their own confidence and self-esteem.

“To me, it is important for people to come and be pampered if they can afford it, especially with the stress people have nowadays”

“Every customer is important, and it is nice to know that we often make someone’s day that little bit extra special by being friendly. Sometimes, it is as simple as asking an older customer for ID if they are buying a bottle of wine. It makes them smile and reminds them that they are important.”

Aaron says speed at the checkout comes with practice. “Speed takes practice, and I built up my speed over the past five years of checkout operating. If people are stressed, we try to remain calm and do our job to the best of our ability and try and help them out.

The staff at Wellsford Four Square Top Shop are continuing to celebrate with team member Aaron Pearson who took out first place at the Northland Checker of the Year Competition.

“It was an exciting night as we competed for best speed, accuracy and customer service and checkout operation,” says Aaron. “I have worked at this store since April and was at New World Warkworth for five years prior — it was my job when I left school. I enjoy getting to know customers, meeting new people and hearing each person’s story because everyone you meet is different.“Iamnow a duty manager, so I mostly do checkouts when we get busy. To become a good checkout operator, you have to be accurate and scan correctly. To me, it is important to ask if your customer could find things OK

The competition was against other Four Square, Pak’nSave and New World supermarkets across the region.
