The threat in question is the grey side-gilled sea slug, Pleurobranchaea maculata, which has been found in Mangawhai Heads estuary and carries the toxin Tetrodotoxin (TTX), which is also found in pufferfish. It occurs naturally in marine bacteria. The toxin can be fatal to dogs if ingested. The council has released a warning which states: ‘It has not been established whether these sea slugs always contain the bacteria and are

to prevent them from eating anything washed up on the coast. ‘TTX can be found in naturally occurring marine bacteria. Little is known about the source of the toxin in these sea slugs. However, it may lie in the shallow subtidal algal communities adjacent to beaches. ‘The sea slugs may be ingesting the bacteria with their food. ‘Dogs that eat organisms containing TTX can die, and so can humans. therefore always toxic or if it depends on what they have ingested. ‘The body is translucent grey. The mantle is covered with minute puckers and folds. lethal dose of TTX to humans is 1–2mg. A human would need to eat 2.6 grams of sea slug in order to get a dose of 1mg of TTX. That’s not much, probably half a teaspoon of sea slug. ‘Symptoms in humans from TTX poisoning include numbness and tingling around the mouth, and nausea. Paralysis can occur. Medical attention should be sought immediately. ‘If you do see a sea slug washed up on the shore, you should report it to your local council.’ ¢

Mangawhai Community Patrol is presently expanding into the Kaiwaka and Wellsford areas.

p The Mangawhai Community Patrol is working between Mangawhai and Kaiwaka and hope to expand to Wellsford in the near future

“We work closely with the police, and they have requested that we expand our area of observation,” says team leader/ coordinator Wayne Price. “At this stage, we are making no formal commitment to times, places or days of these patrols, and we will review what we achieve in the next two to three months.

“Mangawhai Central also helps with the maintenance of the car while the petrol, which comes out of donations, we receive from people and businesses. “Each volunteer goes through an extensive training module. Each patrol is documented and forwarded to police on a special report from. These include times of events, vehicle registrations and

people descriptions. We also have GPS records, with all of our movements. “Team members generally want to help to keep our living environment and town safe. Our community is important to us, and we don’t want problems here.

“It is interesting how much havoc is created by people out of the area at places like Mangawhai Activity Zone and the beach. When we see people going over the speed limit, we often pull up beside them and let them know we are here watching. “They are always spoken to politely but just reminded that the community doesn’t want trouble. It is also interesting to see the number of people slow down when they see our patrol car. The camera on the dashboard sees a lot of things that go on. “We are hoping to secure a benefactor to sponsor monitored cameras in the future and have the patrol monitoring

Mastering the clubs u by Ann van Engelen

Kylie and Nathan Jacoby have played golf since childhood and now encourage children to participate in the sport. “We run Waipū Junior Golf every Monday from 3.30pm–4.30pm at the Waipū Golf Club,” says Kylie. “We both play representative golf for Northland. I play senior women’s and masters, Nathan plays men’s masters, and our 13-year-old son plays junior golf for Northland as well. “I had a scholarship and went to college in America at the University of Oregon. I turned professional after that and then played the European tour for a season. “When I returned home, I played the Australasian tournament and then I had enough and went into the police force until we had children.” “My dad also plays golf, and we love that it is a family sport and is a cool way to travel. It is great having three different generations play together. “On Monday afternoons, we have children from four years old up to high school age learning to play. “It is great that they can get out there and hit the ball. It gives them another sport option. “Just like any sport, we teach the basics first because if you can get that right from a young age, it is going to be so much easier to play later. We are lucky at the Waipū Golf Club as we have the undercover driving range and the

putting green. The club has given us a lot of space to teach with.” Nathan and Kylie provide the equipment for the students to use at the free lessons. “We have chocolate bars and treats at the end that gets them keen too. They really enjoy it, and the parents come and watch, and many are interested in learning themselves now. “At the end of the day, the juniors are the future of the club in years to come. If the parents learn to play too, they can enjoy the sport as a family. It is easy to grab a golf cart and enjoy nine holes in an afternoon together. “Waipū is a great golf course and has a lovely cafe. We have a beautiful view too. “We love teaching the children. Those keen to learn can contact us through the Waipū Golf Club Facebook Page. “Golf is a good individual and team sport. It is challenging, and as you go from hole to hole, no round is ever the same. You are competing against yourself most of the time and try to better yourself. “Once you are out there looking out to the view it is a very special place. A lot of people don’t realise how lucky we are to have this course right here on the coast.” ¢

The Ministry of Social Development is calling on nominations for He Poutama Taitamariki Award — Youth Employee of the Year. Participating in the Northland Business Excellence Awards is free. He Poutama Taitamariki is a groundbreaking programme engaging young people across Te Taitokerau who are not in education, employment or training — so-called NEETS. “The programme provides individuals the tools to identify their strengths and passions,” says MSD regional commissioner Eru Lyndon. “By generating a sense of connection and through ongoing guidance from the HPT team, instils confidence and enhances mana. That way, our taitamariki are better able to follow their dreams and create their own future. “We piloted in Kaikohe, and in just over three years, we have engaged more than 3,000 taitamariki across the region in the programme. The success of the programme can be seen in the drop in NEET rates in Northland over successive years. “MSD is proud of everyone on the HPT programme. We have chosen to support the Northland Business Excellence awards because we are keen to see the achievements of our talented Taitamariki and their supporters recognised by the wider Northland community.” It includes educators, training providers and employers. He Poutama Taitamariki Award nominees must be young people who have moved from receiving support as a Ministry of Social Development or

Sirens of the botanical world u by Liz Clark

In the plant kingdom, they lure unwary insects to their doom with sweet scents, sticky drops and ingenious traps. Whenever the term carnivorous plant is mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is the Venus flytrap. Along with the sundew and pitcher plant, the Venus flytrap utilises trapped insects to obtain its nutrients by slowly absorbing the prey’s juices for several days. Flytraps lure insects with bright red colour and fruity scent to mimic a flower ready for pollination. The trapping of an insect happens in two stages. When the insect lands, fine hairs are triggered, causing a partial closure of the leaves. If the insect is a small, less nutritious species, it allows room for it to escape. However, if the prey is the right size, the

leaves then close entirely to seal in the insect. It then digests its captured meal for up to 12 days. Growers advise avoiding the temptation of putting a finger into the plant’s leaves to trigger them. It uses up the plant’s energy and can lead to it dying. Avoid repotting in compost or potting mix. Venus flytraps do best in acidic, poor sandy soil; they are sold most often planted in a peat medium. Provide 12 hours of daylight during the spring and summer growing season. Avoid fertiliser; too many nutrients can affect the plant adversely. Keep moist at all times. During winter, the plant will

die back. However, it will still need to be provided with sunlight and moisture to continue for the next season. Next in the carnivorous plant kingdom are the attractive and diverse Nepenthes or pitcher plants. These encompass more than 170 named species found in tropical regions, mainly Indonesia, Australia and some Pacific islands. The plants use a passive strategy to lure prey insects. Modified leaves form the classic pitcher-like shape; sugary nectar at the top of the structure acts as a lure to attract insects. The prey is drawn into the trap, where it slides down the waxy

sides and falls into a digestive liquid. Nepenthes should be kept indoors on a sunny windowsill and protected from extreme heat, cold and draughts. The soil needs to be constantly wet for the plant to thrive. Finally, there is the sundew or Drosera, encompassing more than 194 species and a range of climates. These plants use tentacle-like structures with a sticky glue-like substance to ensnare live prey. Once the prey is caught, it is slowly digested. Sundews need similar growing conditions to Nepenthes. Look online for more information or visit your local nursery.

p Grant Crowe has worked in many roles in the photography industry since he left school many years ago

Capturing local sunsets u by Ann van Engelen

Grant Crowe began taking photos at nine years of age with a small Kodak Box Brownie camera. “My dad and I would watch the Auckland Harbour Bridge being constructed from 1954, and we would take photos,” says Grant. “We watched the first car go over the bridge and through the toll booth on May 30 1959, from our house. That has been a forever memory caught on film. “Back in the day, photos were printed at the local chemist and were passport size. Every day I would go and ask if they were back yet. It took a week to get them developed, unlike today where it takes five minutes. “Now with digital, it costs a fraction of the price to print photos compared to the dollar each it once cost. “Since I left school, I have stayed in the photographic industry with retail, portraiture, wedding and commercial

photography experience as well as being the sales manager of a photographic wholesale importing company. “I worked in newspapers and magazine publications such as the New

Zealand Women’s Weekly, the Auckland Star, the New Zealand Farmer and the 8 o’clock newspaper that published every Saturday. “I came to Mangawhai in 2011 for a lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I quickly fell in love with the beach and taking photos of

the sunrises and now call myself the sunrise photographer. “I enjoy capturing images of the incredible range of birdlife here as well. I post a lot of my work on the local Mangawhai Facebook pages and go to the Mangawhai Tavern Markets every week with my images. “I am also a member of the Mangawhai Artists gallery and even though I have been here for some years, I only started showing my work recently. It was quite an experience to be able to share my passion with others. “To me, the way sunrises occur is a miracle. You appreciate the beauty of a sunrise if you have waited in the darkness first. That, to me, explains sunrises. They have so many variants and different colours at the beach.

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER August 6 2021

p Black and white photography is also becoming popular again with photographers across the country

p There are many colours in the sky, water, beach and rocks that make Grant’s photographic scenes come to life

p Birdlife is one of the many aspects that Grant appreciates at the Mangawhai estuary and beach

Some days, you see shags in a pohutukawa tree spread their wings, and they are glorious to look at

“I think of every image as a painted canvas. Just as an artist would paint in an abstract or picture-perfect way, I look for a special moment. I look for beautiful hues, textures, patterns and an angle to capture a different perspective. I don’t manipulate my images — they are as the eye sees it.” Grant says he enjoys sitting on the beach, peering out to sea, observing the shapes, colours and rock formations. “I walk most days along the estuary looking for birdlife. If I don’t take my camera, I end up seeing something special. We take a lot of our birdlife for granted. Recently I saw the most beautiful kingfisher I had ever seen. “Some days, you see shags in a pohutukawa tree spread their wings, and they are glorious to look at.

Oystercatchers are also beautiful, as are the pied stilt, the pied shag and whitefaced herons. You can also find the white-fronted, Caspian and fairy terns. “I think our beach is unlike any other in Northland because of the estuary. It is unusual and beautiful. When the tide is out, the water can constantly change colour from light blue to dark blue and then steely grey. “Even rocks have colours and patterns and reflections at low tide from a sunrise and the water, sand and grooves, puddles. “One of my most memorable sunrise photos is a pre-storm shot. The cloud formations moved around, and suddenly, the most beautiful colours came through. There were reds, oranges, pinks and yellow.

“I enjoy taking snaps of anything that catches my eye when I am on the beach. Flowers, insects and butterflies are also good subjects. “It is nice to see more people are photographing sunrises now. “I encourage people to print their images so they have albums because you can end up with thousands of photos on phones or iCloud unprinted. “Seeing a printed image is different to seeing it on a screen. I bring out my albums quite often. It refreshes the memories. “I delete my photos off my device after uploading them. “I know someone who had thousands of photos, and it took a week to delete two-thirds out of the cloud. Giving children the opportunity to be involved

in photography is important if they are interested. You are never too young to start. “I have fond memories of dad and I going to town and looking at all the cameras in the shop windows in the 50s. “Even using a phone is a good way to begin, but if you are a keen photographer, ultimately, you want a good-quality camera. “People here in Mangawhai do so many different things, and I love seeing what people are doing. “Black and white photography is becoming popular again, which is exciting. “Photography has been a lifelong passion that adds excitement to life and is something that I will continue to love doing.” ¢

The humble crumble u by Jessica Keesing

Nothing beats the humble apple crumble after a lovely roast dinner. This one is extremely simple and requires little to no thought or effort at all. The crumble you can add whatever you want as well; I mean, the more, the merrier when it comes to crumble, right? Serve with custard or ice cream and if you’re like me, enjoy it cold the next day. Ingredients 2 cans delish apple pie filling 1 tbsp cinnamon 1 cup mixed berries 1½ cups flour ¼ cup brown or white sugar ¼ cup rolled oats 200g softened butter

Method Preheat the oven to 180°C. In a Pyrex dish, dump out your cans of apple, add berries and cinnamon, combine. In a bowl, mix together flour, sugar, oats and butter until it becomes a clumpy crumb. Sprinkle over the apple and berry. Bake until the crumble is golden brown for 30–40 minutes. Serve and enjoy with some ice cream or custard.

Nature’s sweetness u by Ann van Engelen

Jo Scott began keeping bees in the 1970s and started attending markets with her products in 2002. “A family friend had bees, and I was interested too, so I got a few hives in my 20s,” says Jo. “When my children left home, I was able to put more time into creating a business and marketing my products. At present, I have 30 hives at various sites and a small honey processing facility. “I use half-depth honey frames and have a small extractor for drawing the honey from the frames. On a small scale, this can be done without the use of any heat. “Most honey in New Zealand is raw, not pasteurised, but large processing facilities use heat up to 40 degrees Celsius to facilitate filtering. “I generally buy queen bees from a queen rearer to introduce new stock. I melt down the wax from the cappings after extracting honey and sell them in blocks for people to make ointments, wraps, furniture polish and candles. “People enjoy honeycomb. When you cut into it, you see the whole cell structure. If you are eating it on bread, you don’t notice the wax. “Mānuka honey is known to have therapeutic properties. I encourage customers who are interested to look at waikato.academia.edu/petermolan/ papers.

“All honey has activity due to naturally occurring hydrogen peroxide, but mānuka gives non-peroxide activity, which is the UMF. Now they use MGO testing as it is more accurate.” UMF is the unique mānuka factor. MGO stands for methylglyoxal, the naturally occurring compound that makes mānuka honey unique. An MGO rating is a standardised measurement of methylglyoxal content and is an indicator of antimicrobial activity of the honey. A UMF 10 converts to around 260 MGO. “I have a variety of honey ranging from the light-coloured pohutukawa-based coastal flora to stronger mānuka and kānuka from my inland northern sites. The nectar sources vary throughout the season. “New Zealand produces some of the best honey in the world, especially the native bush. Our bees are well cared for, and we have fewer diseases than other countries. That is why you can take our honey out of the country but can’t bring it in. “There is a lot of responsibility to beekeeping, and timing for pollination can be critical for crops like kiwifruit and avocado.

A family friend had bees, and I was interested too

p Jo Scott became involved in beekeeping when she was young and gained an interest through a friend who had beehives

“The whole purpose of bees storing honey is to get them through winter. “By supplying them with a good dry cavity to create the right conditions means they can produce more than what they need. “I attend the Mangawhai Community, Waipū Boutique, and Marsden Cove markets.

“When I first began with my bees, I didn’t really think about how long I would do it for, but once you start, you can’t really stop. “Beekeeping has become a passion, and I am a member of the Waipū Beekeeping Association. Honey is such a wonderful product to supply other people.” ¢

Environment group backs tip fight u by Paul Campbell

The Fight the Tip movement opposing the creation of a huge landfill in the Dome Valley is gathering a war chest to cover legal and administrative costs in its application to the Environment Court to overturn a commission hearing that approved the dump for Auckland’s future rubbish. The legal action will encompass the nearly 1,000 submissions against the Waste Management Ltd dump in a catchment flowing into the Kaipara

Harbour, where a breach could devastate the marine environment. An event is underway this weekend in Mangawhai to boost the fighting fund.

Delivering personalised goodbyes for over 70 years.

“The Sustainable Kaipara team is coming on board this coming Sunday to raise money for us with a film show,” said FTT executive member Sue Crockett. “The group has a great mission statement: ‘There will come a day when we will turn to our children and tell them the story of how everyone across Kaipara came together and overcame huge challenges to regenerate and protect the Kaipara environment’. “The next step in our fight is centred on legal argument, and our lawyers are now busy with the case hopefully to be heard next year. Simons, a highly respected specialist environmental firm instructed to act for FTT. “The firm has had notable success in representing communities wanting to protect their amenities and local environment. So funding is key, and we have gratefully received about $23,000 in Givealittle and other donations to help cover costs. However, it is events like this Sunday in the wider community that really gives us hope for the future. “After several years of our battle against the landfill and being backed by iwi and councils, it boosts our confidence when groups like Sustainable Kaipara step up as well.”

Sustainable Kaipara member Stephanie Gibson says the Ocean Movie Festival at the Mangawhai Theatre between 3pm and 5.30pm on Sunday, August 8, will feature “a worldclass series of ocean films featuring adventure aquatic endeavour and inspirational stories.“ Her fellow SK member, Caren Davis, says that along with the films, there will be refreshments and nibbles, and all proceeds from the event will go to Fight the Tip’s fund. “Tickets for the film show are available at $25 for adults and $12 for children, and for information, contact 021 0274 2331.” ¢
