Golfers support Cancer Society

u by Ann van Engelen
Three fathers are teaming up in The Longest Day Golf Challenge to raise money for the Cancer Society on December 27. Calvin Thomas, Craig Palmer and Nira Kingi are joining forces for multiple rounds at Northland Golf Club, hoping to raise thousands of dollars alongside like-minded Northlanders. Calvin, Craig and Nira have experienced the trauma of cancer in various ways. “We have all benefitted from the support of the Cancer Society over many years, so we are willing to do anything to give back and help others,” says Calvin. “Personally, I have been through an experience that no parent ever wants to think about, let alone go through. Two days before Christmas 2005, at only 18 months old, my daughter Beth was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukaemia. “Following intensive treatment including a stem cell transplant, she began her road to recovery and is now a healthy and beautiful 17-year-old. “Through this time, the support provided to my family by organisations such as the Cancer Society was invaluable. By doing the Longest Day Challenge, I hope to help in enabling this kind of support to be provided to other families in the future.” Along with Cancer Society spokesperson Natasha Judd, the men
are challenging other Northlanders to do the same after 25 participants raised an incredible $57,000 in 2020. “The Longest Day is a golfing endurance event where participants play four rounds of golf, the equivalent of walking a marathon while putting golfing skills, stamina and patience to the test,” says Natasha. “One of the draw cards is that people can choose the day and the location that suits them. The longest day of the year is December 22, but it can be played any day in December or January. “It is about making the most of the long days, so there is enough time to get through four rounds. Some golfers like to play in teams, while others prefer to take on the challenge solo. “Participants don’t have to be a golf pro. This challenge is for everyone who loves golf. It is about putting yourself to the test, having fun, and giving back to your local cancer services. “Teams from throughout Te Tai Tokerau will be joining the trio. The Longest Day is a golfing endurance event — 72 holes (four rounds) of golf in one day to raise funds for the Cancer Society. “Playing four rounds of golf is the equivalent of walking a marathon. There are some amazing rewards up
p From left: Calvin Thomas, Craig Palmer and Nira Kingi plan to play four rounds of golf in one day as part of the Cancer Society’s Longest Day Golf Challenge
for grabs, including a round of golf for four people at one of the most beautiful courses in the world — Millbrook Resort in Queenstown. “Like everyone, the Cancer Society has had a tough year, and we are hoping The Longest Day Golf Challenge will raise
vital funds so it can keep supporting people with cancer.” For more information, contact Natasha on 027 687 8763 or CSNEvents@ akcansoc.org.nz. To donate to Calvin, Craig and Nira at longestday.org.nz/t/northlandgcs. ¢

Northland’s subtropical east coast, in this case, centred on the pioneer landing site of Mangawhai, was also an early meeting place of Māori and Europeans and a now shared history. A warmer climate than the rest of New Zealand provides ideal growing conditions. The early vegetation ranges from wetlands to kauri forests, which have been transformed, for better or worse, by the passage of time and industry. It was one of the first landing places for voyaging canoes from Polynesia, as well as European settlement. Missionaries travelled extensively from Mangawhai and managed to smooth the way for settlement and cooperation with local iwi, including the purchase of land for settlement and farming to begin. Most settlers were British, but a number of Dalmatians came and made a living digging kauri gum after 1880. Scots from Nova Scotia settled Waipū while the settlers of Albertland moved from the east coast inland and into settlements dotted about the Kaipara Harbour. Industry began with shipbuilding at Mangawhai, while the land was cleared for farming. With the growing population came trade and exports, particularly kauri timber, to add to the building of Auckland and Australian townships across the Tasman Sea. The years passed swiftly and small settlements grew into vibrant

communities and road, rail and modern communications began to transform lives. Today, Mangawhai and the adjacent east coastal area is one of the fastestgrowing regions in the province. Its population has virtually doubled in a little more than a decade exponentially during the next two decades. A major development underway is the $200 million Mangawhai Central. There
is continuing debate on the expansion of Northport in Whangārei and the economic impact that will have on the east coast generally. The recently announced demise of the Marsden point refinery operation and resulting lack of jobs is cause for local concern. However, a recent bank advisory has highlighted the region with a glowing recommendation.
Mangawhai has an attractive beach and rapidly-expanding local economy, drawing Aucklanders who want a relaxed lifestyle and more house for their money — $1 million will buy a family home on a full section. The weather is nice, the surf is excellent, and there’s a thriving creative community. If you haven’t visited Mangawhai for many years, expect to be surprised next time you go — it’s one to watch. ¢

MANGAWHAI
A place to arrive at u by Paul Campbell
Many European settlers in Northland effectively began their new lives in New Zealand on landing at Mangawhai, where they arrived in the mid-19th century after sailing up from Auckland after the long voyage from Europe. However, Māori landed from the sea back in circa 1250 AD and settled westwards across the Kaipara. The first European influence came in 1854 when the British Crown bought land at Mangawhai for European settlement for £1,060. From there, the town became the centre of trade as significant cargos of kauri gum and logs left for Auckland from the estuary. Shipbuilding began in the 1860s and continued until the 1900s. Other industries of various kinds then developed to support gum diggers, loggers and later, farmers. The historic Mangawhai Tavern, established in 1859, is adjacent to the old port where the ships were loaded with kauri timber and is today the backdrop for heritage celebrations. Mangawhai’s sand dunes are a dominant feature of the harbour. Administered by the Department of Conservation, they are home to the very rare fairy and the Caspian tern, variable oystercatcher and the New Zealand dotterel. With its close proximity to Auckland, Whangārei, and on the threshold of the Kaipara district, it is an ideal base to explore the wider region. The town has grown into a holiday resort with extensive

recreational facilities, a surfing beach and also a creative enclave that is home to a wide range of artists. Mangawhai Central is a planned large-scale development that includes commercial, retail and residential centres connecting the Mangawhai Village and Heads. Today’s burgeoning township has attracted many residents as well as being an enclave of holiday homes. There is a vibrant social life in the area ranging through a number of popular restaurants, clubs and retail outlets. The Mangawhai Activity Zone, with its sporting facilities and the museum complex, is well worth spending quality time. Try some local produce at the Mangawhai Village Market on a Saturday
morning with stalls selling an array of foods and a variety of artisan crafts. For the great outdoors, you could hike along coastal cliffs with the Mangawhai Cliff Walk running for nine kilometres return and taking between two to three hours to complete. Then, it’s summer, after all, so the sheltered waters of the harbour or the roaring waves of the surf beach are bound to beckon. The best place for surfing is by the surf club at the end of Wintle Road, or there are more sheltered places for swimming along the harbour. ¢ MIDWAY CRANES AND TRUCKS LTD

Reflecting the ocean u by Ann van Engelen
Originally from Germany, Carmen Guirulat travelled around Australia and on to New Zealand before settling in Mangawhai. “I had wanted to visit New Zealand since I was a child and moved to Mangawhai about 20 years ago,” says Carmen. “It is great here. I walk the beach every day and taught myself to surf. With the help of friends, after a couple of lessons, I learned the basics and gained confidence. About two years ago, I attended a 10-week pottery course,

and then during the first lockdown this year I picked it up again. “All of my pottery is ocean-inspired and coloured with turquoise, blue, green and orange representing the ocean and sun. “I mix the colours myself and tried other colours, but they are not me. My friend Jim Cooper is a very wellknown potter in Dunedin, and he does very unusual designs and colour combinations. He is very inspirational to me. “As children, we all loved to play in mud, it is creative and you can do anything, even just poke around in it. With potting, I don’t use a wheel, I build by hand. I love the texture of the clay — it is amazing to work with. “For me, every vessel and ornament is different, and that is what I want. Pottery is quite technical, and to make something, the clay has to have the right consistency and wetness. “It then needs to dry for a few weeks before it goes into the kiln for bisque firing. If it is too wet, it will explode in the kiln. When it is out, you let it cool down, and then you glaze it with the colour you want, and it is fired again. It can take four to six weeks to complete a piece. “I make things like vessels and platters. You can drink anything from

my vessels, from tea to port and cold drinks. My beads are really popular as you can use them for all types of things like macrame and wall hangings. They are amazing to touch. “To me, nice clean shapes are boring. I take things like seaweed, broken shells and kina and press it into the clay to give me texture. When you hold my vessels, they all have a different texture. “I love looking at my pieces and making things. People can follow my
Hey Carmink Facebook page. I have a few pieces at the Red Door Gallery in Waipū, and every now and then, I go to a market. Even children stop and tell me they love my art. “Mangawhai is a very inspiring place, and I am sure that helps with my pottery creations. I often start something, and the idea evolves as I am working on it. I walk the beach daily and watch the waves, even if the tiny ripples give me ideas.” ¢

A love of vintage u by Ann van Engelen
Annette Vuletich’s passion for using vintage materials to design children’s clothing began as a teenager, and her hobby has become appreciated by many families. “My love for designing and sewing began more than 40 years ago,” says Annette. “My mother sewed all of our clothes, and I then designed my own creations to dress my four children and two grandchildren, one of them being Lucila, who I have named my business after — Lula Upcycled Designs. “My husband John and I ran a business for many years, which kept us on our toes, so my love of creating took a back seat for a while. Eventually, I returned to my passion of sewing and turned our garage into a sewing workshop and established Lula Upcycled Designs as a little side project.” Annette creates garments from old linen tablecloths, doilies and other interesting fabrics that come her way. “I grew up in Dargaville and haven’t left the area. Although I have travelled, I always came back. I love vintage fabrics and find what I use in local op shops, or people kindly give me things they no longer want. “When I first started, I loved revitalising old linen and recycling doilies which make great bodices for girls’ dresses. As time went on, I ventured into other materials and discovered it is exciting putting different textures together.
“Vintage material is very good quality, and it has a beautiful feel and lasts a good amount of time. I am never too scared to try something different and also use vintage sheets, duvets and curtains. “With the mixes of different patterns and materials, you end up with stunning unique outfits that no one else has. I often don’t know what I am going to do from one minute to the next. “I get a lot of inspiration in my dreams at night. I will dream of an outfit and wake up and create it. I

am often amazed that designs work as they are often exactly as I saw in my dream. “I mostly make girls’ designs as the ideas come easy to me. I don’t have the creative mind for boys’ clothes. My most memorable pieces have been flower girl dresses made from beautiful old tablecloths and doilies.

“Every child has their own unique outfit, so they stand out. When I get photos sent to me, they are always stunning, and it is lovely to know I helped make someone’s wedding day that much more special. “I show my designs on my Lula Upcycled Designs Facebook page, but they look so much better in real life. Some of my models have been modelling since I started 10 years ago, and they have become quite professional now. “I love turning old items into new — it has been an amazing journey. Sewing and creating brings me happiness. I believe everyone should do something every day that lifts you up and brings you joy — that is an important part of life.” ¢

In 2002 Don and Teresa Anderson planted an olive grove at Echo Valley in Mangawhai in preparation for their retirement. “Don worked at a lavender and olive farm in Auckland. He attended a conference and was inspired to plant a grove, and we purchased this property, and Echo Valley Olives was born,” says Teresa. “Back then, people planted olives thinking they would watch olives grow and drink wine, but that was not the case. They didn’t think about the hard work to get there. “You had to jump in and do the work, and we love it. Picking the fruit is the hardest part.
“We place nets on the ground and use handheld electric rakes to knock the olives off the tree and onto the nets. We like to do this by hand to get all the fruit off the tree.” The fruit is then gathered up and taken for processing. “Originally, we used olives from another grove to make our Echo Valley oil until ours were ready for harvest. We were awarded two gold medals for that year’s brand, and we have had many medals since. Olive oil is healthy for you as it cleans the arteries and is often

It is great for cooking, dipping bread in, and drizzling on salads. “People would come to my market stalls and suggest I do a skincare range, so I researched and found a recipe similar to the first skincare ever recorded in history. “My Evoskin products include olive oil, beeswax, witch hazel and therapeutic essential oils. Witch hazel is an astringent that is good for the skin. Olive oil is one of the best things you can put on your skin as it is easy on the skin and absorbs well. “The essential oils along with olive oil help to heal the skin are known to help
clear the sinuses, and the day moisturiser is natural with no preservatives. “Essential oils that are added include frankincense, which helps with wrinkles, geranium to balance skin oils and peppermint to heal skin irritations, stop headaches and clear sinuses. “It is aimed at hydrating the skin and helping it regenerate itself. Evoskin.co.nz has all the information on my range. “I go to Mangawhai Community Market, and Don goes to the Whangārei Growers Market every week, and we both enjoy going to the Marsden Cove Market. “We love helping people with their skin and supplying quality olive oil known for its taste and health properties for people to enjoy every day. WAIPU
A Celtic heritage attraction Hopefully, there will still be the popular Art n Tartan held in July, or the Celtic Music Festival held on Labour weekend. One thing is certai, the place is great to relax and enjoy the Pacific paradise of Bream Bay and Waipū Cove, a long, sandy beach with safe swimming, surfing and fishing. The settlement is also known for horse riding around Waipū, Uretiti and Ruakākā areas. Among many attractions are the excellent museum, art gallery and other outlets. Take a walk around the Waipū Caves to see stalactites, stalagmites and glow worms. As one of the best free glowworm caves in New Zealand, it is not to be missed. Explore the main cavern, which is 175m long with a shallow stream running in the bottom of the cave. For something more energetic, there is the Coastal Walkway with stunning rock formations. A 30-minute drive from Whangārei and perhaps two hours on busy roads from Auckland, Waipū offers a country lifestyle. The real estate industry says the market is busy and cites the town’s character, charm and quality living with plenty of local sights and activities to keep every member of your family happy. The real estate market in Waipū has been steadily growing for the past 10 years.

The Ahuroa River meanders past the town, with the Waihoihoi branching off through the town centre, giving the surrounding land a good amount of natural irrigation. Landowners are breeding stock such as angora goats, and there are home apiaries, boutique crops and free-range eggs, to name just a few. Another must-see locally is the Piroa Falls. The waterfall is accessed down a
10-minute walk through forest and the Ahuroa River. The river by the waterfall makes a great swim spot. It is 14km south of Waipū. The estuaries at Waipū and Ruakākā provide a unique habitat for rare New Zealand birds, such as the New Zealand dotterel and New Zealand fairy tern, oystercatchers, wrybill, reef heron and migrating godwits. ¢

Make it your dream home
Inspiration from the land u by Andy Bryenton
The choice to build on the east coast provides one with far more than just a blank canvas, as an empty lot is sometimes seen by designers and architects. Here, the frame is yours to place, drawing defining lines around some of the most stunning scenery on the planet. Coastal, forest and rolling pastureland views, dune lakes, rugged hills with limestone features; they’re all here. It’s no accident that many of the awardwinning homes established between One Tree Point in the north and Pakiri in the south feature floating sections of glass and a long, low profile that blends into the contours of the coast. Architects and builders seem to be inspired by the views and vistas there. No less than four of the front-runners for House of the Year in 2021 came from the Bream Bay and Mangawhai areas, showcasing the best in modern
design and the consummate skill of local builders. It is another factor that makes a new build on the east coast so practical. Not only is the artistic aspect of land, sea and scenery right here, so, too, are some very skilled and experienced tradespeople. From professionals who know how to lay a firm foundation on the sometimes precipitous coastal hills and cliffs to construction experts familiar with the latest in material technology, you’ll find them there. Building out of the ordinary, unique homes is a speciality for many locals, who have had decades of experience crafting homes different from those in the city. Off the grid lodges in the

p If you can dream it, the east coast provides the scenery to backdrop any vision, and local builders can make it a reality
countryside, sprawling ranch houses, seaside hideaways and luxurious retirement homes with ocean views are all common sights in the curriculum vitae of east coast builders. As noted, there’s a perfectly good chance that whoever you choose to undertake your build will be a House of the Year finalist. The same goes for associate tradespeople. They have a thorough knowledge of the latest in electrical, home IT integration, energysaving and amenities installation; paying
huge travel costs to bring in professionals from the city is never a necessity. Building in an urban environment means being constrained by space, neighbours, and the necessities of cost. Building there, where there’s more choice with how you start and where your vision ends up, allows for greater creative freedom. It’s good to know that, no matter what grand design takes your imagination, there are experienced tradespeople based locally who can make it real. ¢

REAL ESTATE
Snapshot of a buoyant property market u by Andy Bryenton
The stock of available housing is down, and prices are up in the mid-north, but a sea change is on the way, with building consents at record highs and the Auckland Covid border down. Real estate market analysis website realestate.co.nz suggests that November has marked a turning point for what many have called New Zealand’s runaway housing market. “The New Zealand property market is taking an encouraging turn. The last time we saw our new listings this high was seven years ago, in October 2014,” said the property site’s CEO, Sarah Wood. “Additionally, total housing stock has also gone up by 5.1% year-on-year. It looks like buyers will have more homes to choose from this spring and summer.” Statistics from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand back this up. The Northland region saw a record median house price of $745,000 in November 2021, up 26.5% from the same time last year. Two districts in Northland also reached record median figures: Far North District ($817,500) and Kaipara District ($905,000). Properties are selling quickly in Northland, with the region experiencing its lowest November median days to sell since 2005, at only 35 days. It is no short-term spike caused by fluctuations in the market, either.
An analysis of the five-year trend in mid-north property prices reveals a steady upward curve, with the median price almost doubling during that period. As existing houses sell high and move fast, building is gearing up to fill the gap. A slow start to the housing crisis response has been replaced by serious momentum. Housing consents are at record numbers, and data from Statistics New Zealand show that the country has consents to build homes at a faster rate than in the 1970s. This was the era of the suburbanisation of East and North Auckland, so that represents a significant boost to the amount of new homes being built right now. Demand is sure to be high among people now released from one of the longest Covid-19 lockdowns anywhere in the world. As Auckland holidaymakers visit for some much-needed rest and relaxation, many will have a permanent move on their minds, potentially entrenching the current seller’s market situation while at the same time guaranteeing work into the future for local tradespeople. ¢
p Under the hammer — more homes are coming up as building consents hit their highest point of the century, matching 1970s levels

Designing a new kitchen When building or renovating a home or office, one of the exciting jobs is perfecting your kitchen design. Proper kitchen planning is key to having a successful kitchen design that fulfils all your expectations, whether you are doing it alone or have called in an expert. Begin with finding a style to suit the practicalities of your area. Think about how you want it to compliment the style or period of your home or contrast it. Consider the type of units you want to go for and how you will use colour or bring texture into the room with materials. All of these elements should be considered before any work takes place. Once you have a look in mind, you can start to put your kitchen planning into practice. Kitchens have become rooms that we spend time specialising and cooking in for our friends and loved ones. With your kitchen plans, whatever your budget, and style there are processes to make it easier. From choosing the best cabinetry, flooring and appliances, if your current kitchen needs a drastic makeover, or if you have a blank canvas, ensure the end result is something you will enjoy. Consider the style of sink you want, and if you have an open-plan kitchen diner and living space, the kitchen’s decor should work in harmony with dining and relaxing areas as well.
List what you need and want from your new design. Often it is best to do this yourself before a kitchen designer changes things that don’t need changing, particularly if you are renovating. Think about where the dining table fits, if there is one, so that the layout fits your lifestyle. When planning the preparation and cooking area, it is important to understand the space you are working with, so you have the best flow possible between your kitchen, outside space and the rest of your house. You will need to factor zones into your plan if you are
designing an open plan kitchen. The best way to plot in the cabinetry and appliances is with paper cut-outs of toscale appliances and cabinets. Failing that, use a pencil. Once you see exactly how much room you have to work with, you can start planning to make the most of your space. When working with the professionals, this will give you a clear idea of how much you want to spend before beginning, ensuring you end up with a scheme you can afford. Preplanning will also help reduce excess costs early in the process if your plans don’t match your budget. ¢

Make it your dream home A garden of earthly delights u by Liz Clark
We all have a vision of how we would like our gardens to look, the views we want, the things we would like and the plants we want — we’re allowed to dream, right? Of course we are. Imagine this; you have an unlimited budget and can have anything you want. The choices are limitless. The styles make the imagination run wild, and the thought of having the garden you want is so exciting. How about an entertainer’s garden? You’ve got the house, and now you must have that outdoor venue for all those dinner and pool parties with the setting to match. You’ve got the pool setting with all the mod cons and the glass panelling to show it off. Now you need a touch of Bali to bring it all together. Balinese-style gardens use natural materials such as brushwood or bamboo panelling for screening, dark colour tones and a lot of tropical greenery. Make paths from wood or stone to take your guests through lush palms, bird of paradise, frangipani and hibiscus into a
central entertainment area. Perhaps you have a small water feature planted with lotus flowers to set it off. Of course, you’ll need four or five eyecatching pots to set it all off. Don’t forget the shade pavilion, sun loungers and finally, the fire pit — that is a must-have. If you’ve been inspired by the garden style of the classic English country garden, you can be greedy. Create winding paths using pavers, gravel or even shells to guide your visitors around the garden. Use tall plantings to provide a background setting and shelter for all the flowering plants put in to fill every possible space. Use roses, flowering annuals, hollyhocks, snapdragons, sweet peas, alyssum, lobelia and many others to bring colours that look like something out of a Beatrix Potter illustration. If

you have a sloping site, create a series of garden rooms with stones for steps and perhaps an iron gate leading into each one. Enclose them in with trellis for climbing roses to tumble over, keep some lawn and have a garden bench to sit on and have a relaxing read during the day. Everywhere, plant flowers to enjoy. You can be bold and go for an Italianate garden with grapevines on
overhead providing shade during the heat of the day, citrus trees planted in large matching pots with sculptured gardens planted with lavender and other favourites — even an olive tree in the central courtyard to provide the renaissance touch. If you’re inspired, cut out images from gardening magazines for ideas and paste them into a visual diary or look online for more ideas. ¢ As seen on Grand Designs 2019

Make it your dream home Cutting the ties that bind u by Andy Bryenton
We all enjoy the sense of freedom that holiday living brings, getting out on the boat, out into the wilderness or off to the beach for a few days or weeks cut off from the ties of modern civilisation. However, some go beyond snipping the power cables and utility mains for a holiday break; those who, with a combination of skills old and new, have gone completely off the grid. Daniel Boakes, Dargaville’s Solar Boss expert, has helped many families, farms and individuals get off the grid, from the harbour to the far north. He says that the technology has now reached a point where it’s stable, scalable and can sustain all the modern conveniences of a 21st-century household. Daniel has been installing systems for more than half a decade and said the only constraints on generation now are space and budget. “We have a lot of family and friends coming around to check out our solar system,” says one such alternative power adopter, Billy from Opononi*. “We tell them it’s a good choice; we haven’t had to use the old generator since we got it!” Billy’s house is on family land. However, he decided early on to get off the grid and become self-contained, in a move that has slashed living costs and benefits the environment. It’s also
a way to enjoy technology like television and computers in an area of noncosmopolitan natural beauty. “It’s nothing we couldn’t afford,” he says of the solar panel and battery bank system Solar Boss installed. “Added to which, it’s very effective. There’s no limitations, and it’s modular. We can add on batteries and panels at any time. I’d recommend it to anybody.” Opononi, south of the Hokianga Harbour, enjoys a similar sunshine hours gradient to the wider northland area. The experience of Billy and his family is pertinent to those who wish to cut their ties with power companies in the region. Daniel, Dargaville’s solar man, says he’s overseen the design and install of systems from farms to luxury homes to small cabins. While wintertime delivers reduced volts, a well-plannedout photovoltaic system can handle the load year-round, especially if it’s built with seasonal changes in mind. *Billy was kind enough to share his solar off-the-grid experiences with us but asked for his full name to be redacted for the sake of privacy. ¢

ONE TREE POINT & RUAKAKA
From missionary to industry u by Paul Campbell
A rich history abounds around Marsden Bay at the south head of Whangārei Harbour, with the western side forming the coastal community of One Tree Point, and the eastern side the industrial development of Marsden Point. Ruakākā lies about nine kilometres to the south. In 1823 the missionary Samuel Leigh travelled through the district of Whangārei and found it desolate. He landed near One Tree Point with a mission group and spent the night, while missionary Samuel Marsden had travelled through the area in 1815 and 1820. Eventually, the influence of the visiting missionaries helped to settle local iwi conflicts. The then British Resident James Busby in 1839, bought
on families in Northland for years to come, according to the First Union, after the decision to switch the operation to an import-only fuel terminal from the middle of next year will cost many jobs in the region. A mechanical move u by Ann van Engelen
Chase and Katie Green took ownership of Marsden Motors in August and said they are privileged to continue on from previous owners Dylan and Hannah Whitehead. “I have 10 years experience of being in the industry,” says Chase. “I was introduced to Dylan through friends who knew he was selling, and we worked out a plan together for us to take over the business. Dylan set the workshop up really well and had an excellent eye for detail. He has created a modern, smart business, and we are so privileged to carry on their work. “I started in the motor trade doing an apprenticeship with my dad in 2013 at Puhoi. in the industry, he left me to run the workshop, and that prepared me for this business. “We took over on August 16 only to be locked down on August 18. It wasn’t the most ideal start, but things are finally starting to find their pattern, and we are looking forward to a really positive future and helping our community. “I work alone, which means there is only one person to blame at the end of the day if something doesn’t go right.” Chase is in the process of completing the warrant of fitness authority through NZTA with WOFs available in the near future. “The automotive trade is changing all the time. It has gone from spark plugs and filters to computers that tell you what is wrong with a vehicle. No two jobs or days are ever the same. “You are a product of your environment, so keeping my workspace clean and tidy is an important part of my day. “I do almost everything to do with servicing and repairing cars. If I can’t do it I will let you know very quickly and recommend where to go next. “I love the variety of work and meeting new people. Marsden Motors is at 7b Kitepai Street, Marsden City, in the same building as PK Tyres. “They are as new as I am, and people can go from me to them if necessary. We are getting to know each other as well, and they are also building a good reputation for themselves.
“Coming from a rural setting in Puhoi, Katie and I are loving it here. The township is growing and has a lot of potential. Katie opened her nail business Little Canvas Boutique and has had a positive response. “We appreciate that it is a close-knit community, and being able to go fishing is a bonus.” ¢

Santa’s coming to town u by Ann van Engelen
Santa is still coming to Mangawhai via a video link thanks to the local community and businesses helping him. “The Mangawhai Activity Zone committee came up with the idea to help get Santa through town even though our parade has been cancelled,” says organiser John Phillis. “Committee member Arnna Alexander is very talented behind the movie camera and has helped organise the show.” Santa will air via community Facebook pages from December 20. “John has organised the local Santa Parades for many years, and this year, we didn’t want his efforts to be wasted,” says Arnna. “We want to remind everyone what an amazing place we live in. The video link will catch Santa arriving at the beach and making his way along the route that was planned for the parade. “It will be a non-political, heartfelt warm story of what Santa and the community are all about. We have really harnessed John’s hard work and are thankful to the businesses and locals who came together to help Santa and showcase the beautiful diversity of Mangawhai. “Santa will be stopping at the various businesses, clubs and groups who support MAZ. Heath from Deft Photography has been amazing, as have people who have come together with ideas and organising things for Santa.
“We had a lot of challenges, and every person we have spoken to has been supportive whether by lending props, vehicles or children. We are so excited to bring Santa to the community after such a long year.” John says the MAZ committee has had a positive year. “We have quite an incredible park; there are not many like it in New Zealand,” he says. “It has been a good year for us. We managed to get funding for additional shade sails, which will be so much needed during the summer period. “We completed the Junior Pump Track, which is like a BMX track. You go around and skate, scooter or bicycle and start at the high ramp. It is very exciting for children as the inertia gets you around the various bumps and curves. We have the senior and junior pump tracks tar sealed and will be starting a 3x3 basketball court before Christmas. “Originating from Harlem in the Bronx, 3x3 has one basketball hoop, and the team has three players shooting hoops. It is a lot easier to fit into parks and recreation areas and is becoming one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. “We are excited to be getting more activities for all age groups at the park. Finishing the year off with Santa via video

Choose patrolled beaches u by Ann van Engelen
Surf Life Saving New Zealand is encouraging people to take extra care when they head to the beach, with record numbers of rescues already taking place this year. “Early warm weather has already meant high numbers of people visiting the beach before the holiday weekday patrols have begun,” says Surf Life Saving New Zealand CEO, Paul Dalton. “Worryingly, lifeguards have already carried out record numbers of rescues in parts of the country this year, and tragically there have been several drownings.” Surf Life Saving Northern Region has already carried out a third of the number of rescues they would typically see in an entire year. “This year has been another tough year for New Zealanders as we continue to deal with the impact of Covid-19, and many people are looking forward to
enjoying more freedom very soon. We want people to enjoy a great summer, but we also want you to get home from the beach safely. “Many people are getting set to explore the country and visit new destinations along the coast and may be unaware of the different risks that beaches present. “Surf beaches pose the greatest risk, with 36 per cent of beach and coastal fatal drownings occurring at these locations last year. “The best way to stay safe is to choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the flags. Everyone visiting the beach this summer should take note of these safety messages.”
1. Choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags — this is the safest place to swim. 2. Ask a lifeguard for advice. Conditions can change quickly, and our lifeguards keep a constant eye on the beach situation. They continuously scope the beach for hazards, keep on top of weather forecasts and understand the swell and tide conditions. 3. Look for, read and understand the safety signs. 4. Know your limits. Don’t overestimate your ability or your children’s ability to cope in the conditions. Too many people get into trouble in the water because they simply overestimate their abilities and underestimate the conditions. 5. Keep children within arm’s reach at all times in or near the water (close enough to cuddle). Rogue or large waves move really quickly and unexpectedly and can sweep children away or knock them off their feet. 6. Swim, surf, fish with mates. Always better together as there is safety in numbers. If you get in trouble in the water and you have someone with you, you have instant backup.

They can help you out or get help if needed. 7. Rips are a major hazard on New Zealand beaches and can be deadly. Learn the 3Rs Rip Survival Plan — Relax, Raise, Ride; it could save your life. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, raise your hand to signal for help and ride the rip until it stops, and you can swim back to shore, or help arrives. 8. When rock fishing, always wear a lifejacket and shoes with grip, not gumboots, and don’t turn your back to the sea. 9. If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 111 and ask for the police as they have a direct line to Lifeguards and Coastguards. 10. If in doubt, stay out. 11. Be sun smart — slip, slop, slap and wrap to protect your skin and eyes from the sun’s damaging rays. ¢ THERE IS A FULL TIME PRIVATE CLINIC IN WHANGAREI, RUN BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH PROBLEMS Such as troublesome bleeding; menopause concerns; abnormal smears; pelvic pain; pain or irritation ‘down there’; fertility issues; non–surgery options for prolapse and bladder problems. Stroke of luck u by Ann van Engelen
Robert Alison is thankful he gets to celebrate Christmas thanks to the Northland Rescue Helicopter service coming to his aid. “A tractor accident on a Mangakahia Valley farm during Easter 2020 was nearly the end of me,” says Robert. “While doing some cropping work, the heavy roller I was towing downhill caused my front wheels to jack-knife and the tractor to roll. I was thrown through the back window of the cab and catapulted into the paddock.” Robert received a gash to his head that could have easily gone deeper and

injured his brain. “I also received seven broken ribs, a smashed left shoulder blade, a punctured lung and a cut knee. I was lying in the paddock helpless and dehydrating rapidly in 31-degree heat. No one knew I had been lying there for hours.” Pro+Med NZ Ltd paramedic Simon Townsend and first responder Stephanie Sole happened to drive past and spotted a foot beside a tree in the paddock. They parked and were quickly at Robert’s side. From there, the community kicked into action. A local was sent to find the nearest house and call 111 to request the Northland Rescue Helicopter be placed on standby given the gravity of Robert’s condition. “We activated GoodSAM immediately, which is a phone app that sends a signal to 111 that highlights there is an emergency and gives your location,” says Simon. “That really sped the process up of getting the various emergency services into action. From there, the GoodSAM app identifies the nearest medical staff, including doctors, nurses, paramedics and lifeline specialists like police, to

your location. Without the Rescue Chopper, Robert would have died due to his injuries, which included internal bleeding. “In situations like this, the community is really important. If they support the Northland Rescue Choppers, then the service can support the community. “Accidents like Robert’s are also a good reminder as we head into summer to get your first aid kits sorted, get some first aid training and put a plan in place to check up on people on farms. “Robert’s son David was not planning to contact him until the following day, and that would have been too late given he had no knowledge of the accident. It was actually a conversation with Chopper Ambassador Dr Lance O’Sullivan at Kaitaia Hospital earlier that day that prompted us to return
to Whangārei via Twin Bridges. For Stephanie to spot Robert’s foot as we drove past is as random as it gets. Robert remembers nothing of the accident nor the subsequent trip in the Northland Rescue Helicopter to Whangārei Hospital for emergency treatment.” Despite his trauma, Robert has bounced back remarkably well. “Before my accident, I did not think about the Northland Rescue Chopper, to be honest. I am so thankful for what they do for us and also really grateful for the care that Simon and Steph gave me. “The chopper is definitely a good cause, and I have been to the base a couple of times now to meet the team and donate.” Robert is now back on the farm daily — armed with an Emergency Locator Beacon. ¢

A chocolate lovers delight u by Ann van Engelen
Creating decadent chocolate by hand in Pahi with a view of the Kaipara Harbour is a passion for Tatiana White. “I am a chef and came to New Zealand from Russia to give my daughter a better life eighteen years ago,” says Tatiana. “I lived in Auckland and wanted to learn something new, so I attended professional chocolate making classes. It wasn’t as easy as I thought but making chocolate gives me energy. “I began experimenting with different flavours and ideas and was giving my creations away to family and friends.” Seven years ago, Tatiana moved to Pahi. She took her handcrafted delicacies to dinner parties and met Paul and Andrea Jeffries. The couple soon discovered Tatiana had a talent beyond words. “Tatiana gave us a handcrafted rose chocolate. It looked real and was so beautiful it sat in our fridge for weeks as we didn’t want to eat it,” says Paul. “We decided to create Dekadenz Ltd to make Dekadenz Chocolates. We use top-quality ingredients, including Belgium chocolate with 54.5 per cent cacao and Tatiana’s handcrafted fillings. “It has been a long steady road to get to where we are at. During the Covid lockdowns, we spent time researching
and developing and came up with new flavours and products. “We now have a top-notch chocolate made by a Russian, in Pahi, with Belgium Chocolate. Whatever Tatiana does, she does really well — she has talent beyond recognition. “Her passion is incredible, and that is the difference between Tatiana’s handmade product and something made by machine. There are very few artisans left, and Tatiana is definitely a chocolate artisan. Her chocolates are becoming well known across Kaipara and New Zealand.” The fillings include raspberry, mint and chili, apricot and salted caramel. “It is not just a chocolate, every single step of each chocolate is made by hand,” says Tatiana. “Every mould is polished, and every colour is set before the next colour is applied. I think about each flavour and come up with a design. It has taken years of practice to get my recipes precise. “Even though I made it simple, even simple is at least three colours. The tropical chocolate has a pineapple base and is sour and sweet. It is between milk and dark chocolate and is coloured
green, orange and yellow, a sunny colour. It pleases a lot of people. “Our salted caramel is golden yellow and white. Baileys is popular, and the mint and chilli is a favourite. The mint is strong and pops in your mouth straight away, then in a minute, the chilli warms your throat. At present we are developing a Christmas chocolate. “It excites me to take a chocolate from the mould and see how it looks. It is expensive to manufacture, but I am always happy to see people’s faces when
they taste my products. It is then that they understand the difference between other chocolate and mine. “I also started chocolate classes as a way to teach others the art of good chocolate. It is something I love doing, and all ages can attend. “To me, the secret to creating a good product is quality ingredients and enjoying what you are doing. I came to New Zealand to give my daughter a better life, and I am loving life here in Pahi making Dekadenz chocolates.” ¢

Helping each other through COVID-19 With more cases of COVID-19 in the community, it’s possible you and your whānau will be exposed to the virus. To make sure you’re ready, have a plan in case you or someone in your house tests positive and needs to isolate. Everyone who tests positive for COVID-19, and those who live with them, will need to isolate for at least 10 days to stop the spread of the virus. If someone else in your house tests positive for COVID-19, they’ll be advised how much longer they need to isolate. Make a plan
Support while isolating
If you’re travelling and away from home, know how you will get home or self isolate where you are.
It’s normal to feel anxious about isolating with COVID-19.
While isolating, you will need to have all of your food and necessities delivered. You cannot go to work, school, church or any community or private events or gatherings. No one outside of the people you live with can visit or enter the home. Most fully-vaccinated people with COVID-19 are likely to have a mild to moderate illness and will fully recover at home.
Who can help out Be prepared in case you’re exposed to COVID-19. Speak with a neighbour, friend, or whānau about the support you could need. For instance, dropping off food and supplies, and help with activities outside the house. Being ready is about people, conversations, connections and knowing what to do, so your whānau and community can help each other when needed.
You’ll have a support person who will contact you often to check that you and your whānau are safe and supported – even if you’re travelling and away from home. You will also get a telephone number for 24-hour health support. If you need more help or support to manage at home, you can access a COVID-19 welfare line.
What you’ll need To help you get through, you will need to have food, medications and supplies available to you. Find a detailed checklist to help you prepare at Covid19.govt.nz/prepare
