Both the suspect and the canine crimefighter were airlifted in separate helicopters to receive medical treatment in Auckland. Northland police were already on high alert following the firearms-related homicide of a 30-year-old man in Wellsford on Saturday, November 28. When Tangowahine residents called in reports of a ‘suspicious individual’ in the close-knit town on Tuesday morning around 9.15am, police quickly responded. Locals report seeing ‘at least 20’ police cars descend on the area. As luck would have it, an off-duty officer was also on the scene early and helped call in backup. “Two police units, who had armed themselves as a precaution given the information available to them, initially responded and located the man near a vehicle,” says Superintendent Tony Hill. “Police approached this man, who then quickly fled on-foot over a fence and into a paddock. “A police dog handler and another police officer had followed. Police staff chased the man, who then turned around and presented a highcalibre firearm and began shooting at

the police dog, in the direction of the police officer. “The officer returned fire, and subsequently, the offender was shot three times. “Police staff immediately provided first-aid to the man and called for assistance. Specialist police staff who arrived on scene shortly after also provided further first-aid to this man.” The Northland Rescue Helicopter airlifted the suspect from the scene, while the Westpac Rescue Helicopter transpor ted the police dog to Auckland for treatment. Both were described as being in a stable condition following the incident, with the police dog treated by vets in Mount Albert’s specialist animal medicine centre. While the initial call to police by Tangowahine residents was allegedly spurred by the resemblance of a ‘suspicious individual’ prowling through farms to wanted man Desmond Lawrence Bourne, police confirmed at a press conference later on Tuesday that the suspect was not Bourne, but was an individual sought by police for drug and firearm offences. ¢

Speed limit changes supported u by Andy Bryenton

Kaipara District Council Road Safety staff held four community drop-in information sessions in Mangawhai, Kaiwaka and Hakaru recently, gauging community interest in a plan to lower speed limits on dangerous or crash-prone sections of road in the Mangawhai and Kaiwaka areas. The concept of speed limit reductions was broached nationally this time last year, with mixed results and feedback. Road freight companies warned of hikes in the cost of goods, for example, while pedestrian and cyclist advocacy groups welcomed the discussion. Submissions have been called locally in recent weeks to determine the right approach for the KDC. To assist with the submission process, Northland Transportation Alliance Speed Limits project manager, Shawn Baker said that there were a number of road-related issues raised at the meetings. However, there was general support for lowering speed limits to make the roads safer. Rural roads and areas around schools were of particular interest. “It is important for us to understand how different roads are being used by local communities so we can make good decisions,” said Baker. He encourages those who want their opinion heard on this subject to visit kaipara.govt.nz/haveyoursay.

Submissions will be taken until December 18. The concept has not been without its detractors, however. Road Transport Forum chief executive, Nick Leggett, called the concept of speed limit reduction ‘death by 1,000 cuts’ when the idea was proposed nationally in 2019. Like many others, he typified speed limit reductions as a poor substitute for repairing bad roads. “It is a cheap and nasty way of trying to address the problem, but it is not going to address the problem. It is going to lead to a whole lot of other problems.” Primar y among these was the view of many respondents to the idea on social media. They overwhelmingly highlighted the possibility of the new limits being used as a ‘cash grab’ by police, who are already routinely criticised by motorists for setting up speed traps in passing lanes and at the point where speed limits change from 100 to 80kp/h, regardless of conditions. ¢

Introducing Kaipara Ensemble u by Ann van Engelen

When music teacher Sonja Whitehouse relocated to Dargaville from Auckland in May this year, she established Kaipara Ensemble to give children the opportunity to have a musical outlet. “I studied music in Pretoria, South Africa, where I did a bachelor’s degree. During lockdown I decided maybe it is a good idea to move out of Auckland for affordability and space,” says Sonja. “A door in Dargaville opened up, and I was able to take over an established homeschool ensemble when I came to Kaipara. We have been playing together for some weeks. My goal is to develop the group and provide a wide range of musical opportunities. “Music itself is like therapy, and when we make music together, the benefits are many. The serotonin lifts our spirits and makes us happy as we become a part of something bigger than ourselves. When we share our gift with the community, we are sharing part of our happiness.” The Kaipara Ensemble is performing at the Dargaville Christmas in the Park on December 12 and at another concert on December 19.

“These shows will expose the children to wonderful music. My vision is to have school-age children become accomplished singers. Whangarei Youth Music has offered to take us under their wing and provide us with extra mentoring. “I am hoping to become more of a classical ensemble. At present we have a guitar and two ukuleles in the mix. We would love wind instruments like clarinets, flutes, brass instruments, snare and timpani drums, which is a huge kettle drum. Having access to percussion or stringed instruments will give the children the opportunity to learn to play various musical instruments and discover which they enjoy the most. “We welcome donations of any unused musical equipment people may have at home not being used. This will help give the children the chance to learn an instrument and enable more

p Sonja Whitehouse and the students at Kaipara Ensemble are practising for the upcoming Christmas events they will be performing at

to participate. We are scheduled to train with the Whangarei Youth Music in the last week of January. Our youth are excited to be able to get together and join in the session. “There will be all sorts of events, and it will be exciting to see the group expand. We have mostly beginners and would welcome more advanced players to come along.” The cost to join the ensemble is $50 a term for each person to a maximum of $120 a term each family. Check out the Kaipara Ensemble Facebook page for more details. “We practise together and have short theory lessons in between

so students can develop their skill and gain an understanding of how music works. I also teach classical singing and piano at Maestro Music Studio. “I am a registered member of the Institute of Music and am police vetted. Attending a variety of performances helps build their confidence, and I am looking forward to presenting wonderful opportunities for people to enjoy our music. “I am enjoying living in Dargaville and exploring the Kaipara area. It is such a warm and welcoming community and I already feel like I am a part of a bigger family.” ¢

From Brazil with Xmas cheer

u by Andy Bryenton

Mangawhai is in for a festive season treat as some of New Zealand’s favourite jazz performers gather in the beachside town for an Antipodean Christmas, joined by an artist acclaimed as one of the all-time greats of the genre. Mangawhai’s first inaugural Soul Festival jazz concert will take place at the Mangawhai Activity Zone on December 12 from 4.30pm to 9pm. With three distinct performances, there’s a guarantee that you’ll be out of your seat dancing; a promise direct from performer Maggie Gould. “It’s been a challenging year for everyone,” she says. “However, now the time has come to come together and party!” The line-up on offer will certainly give fans of jazz, and of musical virtuosity, a cause to celebrate. Brazilian-born, New York-based percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer Nanny Assis may very well be the leading proponent of Brazilian jazz alive today. He’s a lifetime achievement hall-of-famer and winner of the 2017 award for best male vocalist in Brazil. He and his band are known for delivering not just the freeform cool of jazz as we usually know it here in New Zealand but introducing crowds to the rhythms of Brazil. Having him here for Christmas is akin to a visit by the Rolling Stones, in terms of respect within his genre. “It’s a joyful, uptempo, uplifting sound,” he says, speaking on the

way to a concert in New Plymouth. This musician is making the most of a Covid ‘break’ in his adopted New Zealand by doing what he does best and performing. You might be familiar with the samba music of Brazil, which is, for example, very different to the African-American sound of jazz from New Orleans. Brazilian jazz uses these

different harmonies and rhythms to great effect.” Fellow jazz performers and collaborators on the night include the famous Paul Ubana Jones, Alex Griffith, Ron Samson, Kevin Field and Maggie Gould herself, alongside Mr Assis, who has worked with luminaries as varied as Kenny Barron and Paul Simon. If you

love jazz music, the vibrant sounds of Brazil, or just plain old good times, then this ‘genesis’ event for what is planned to be an annual jazz celebration is a world-class night out, just down the street. There will be a medley of wellknown classics, reimaginings of rock songs and jazz ‘in the wild’ to delight all comers. ¢

Show-offs in the shadows u by Liz Clark

As gardens mature and trees grow larger, shady spots are often a problem for gardeners to find a solution for; enter the spectacular star of shade — the hosta. According to gardening experts, hostas get better with age. Naturalising them under your more mature trees brings an otherwise dull, barren landscape beneath to a world of colour, shape and textural interest. No matter the size of your garden, large or small, hostas are a must-addition to your botanical collection. With more than 45 species in its genus, the perennial hosta originates from the northeast Asia region, namely Japan, China, Korea and the Russian Far East. They are now widely cultivated globally mainly as a textural plant,

although the flowers are also highly attractive. More than 6,500 cultivars and hybrids are now produced. With such a vast range to choose from — there’s no limit to the imagination. Before purchasing hostas from your local nursery, take a closer look at the soil conditions in your intended planting area. Put down plenty of compost and organic matter to create a deep bed for your future plantings. Ensure there is plenty of shade in your chosen site, so it is well protected from the afternoon sun. Hosta leaves can be easily burned by the heat of the summer sunshine and

can look unsightly if you’re planning to grow for a mass display or focal point. Hostas are deciduous and die back during the winter. Trim any dead leaves away for a tidy-up, and bed down well for the dormant season. During the dormant period, the plants can be divided up and planted in a new location. New leaves emerge in spring from the plants’ rhizomes, which is also the time when slugs and snails are after a tasty snack. Protect from these crawling nasties with an appropriate non-toxic bait, wherever possible. During the spring growing season,

add in blood and bone or slow-release fertiliser to promote healthy leaves and colour. In summer, deep mulch the plants with a layer of at least 10cm or more. It will save watering in the longterm and keep your plants’ roots cool during periods of peak temperatures. Mulching also can help discourage active weed growth and will save time in the long-term. Cultivars to look for, depending on preference for size, leaf shape and colour, are Albo Picta, August Moon, Empress Wu, Blue Angel, Francis Williams, Gold Edger and Lime Passion.

p Alison began her adventure in business by creating screen-printed T-shirts and selling them at the markets when their three children were under six years old

A designers’ inspiration u by Ann van Engelen

Kyle and Alison Robinson moved to Mangawhai 10 years ago as a place to settle and create an inspiring life for their family after many years of travel. “We had returned from travelling, and we couldn’t afford to buy in Auckland, and we found a property in Mangawhai,” says Kyle. “The lifestyle is incredible here. Ali comes from Cape Town, South Africa and after travelling, moving to Mangawhai was the best decision — ever. We both come from graphic design backgrounds, and when our three children were under six years old, Ali wanted to sell screen-printed T-shirts at the markets. “I worked in Auckland and thought Ali’s idea was insane as she was already busy and I didn’t know how she would juggle it. She went along to the first market and sold out on the day thanks to the community support we received.” Kyle says the brand slowly grew, and he joined Ali in the business approximately four years ago. Threadbox Design and Supply Co has now become a creative studio and surf-inspired shop located at Bennetts in Mangawhai. “Ali is a very technical and smart girl. We were able to move into the Bennetts premises a year ago and have become like a one-stop shop. We have constantly changed our ideas and enjoy helping other people with their projects, including screen printing T-shirts and other items for their businesses. We also help with website designs and branding. “We do a lot of community work as well using our skills to help the various

organisations. It is a way to say thank you and give back to the community. We work mostly under the radar and have helped with projects such as rebranding the Mangawhai Activity Zone and the museum to upgrade their website. “Our children grew up here, and the town has given us strong roots. That is one way we can support our community. It is a funky town and life here is all about the people. The locals are great at volunteering for the different organisations that need it. We have seen heaps of success stories through working with others. “Even the museum is an integral part of our community, as are the walking tracks and the surf lifesaving club. It is about embracing the community and beach lifestyle. With the town growth, you can actually have a business that will survive now instead of being a summer dependent location. “We are lucky to be where we are at Bennetts. They are a fantastic family to work alongside. At present, we are starting to stock fresh products for the summer season with new designs and brands. We draw inspiration from the things we love — fashion, surfing and skateboarding. “We get our kicks from helping others create that certain look that helps take their company to the next level. “The future is looking fantastic, and we are proud to be a part of the Mangawhai community.” ¢

The essence of life u by Ann van Engelen

With an array of community interests, Donna Flavell and her husband Sandy Morrison’s Just Cabins business helps people needing extra space for whanau to have a secure, safe place to stay. “I have been involved in Te Whai Community Trust Mangawhai since it was formed in 2015,” says Donna. “Mangawhai is one of the biggest growth areas and is seen as a healthy, wealthy community. However, as wealth increases, so too, do the needs of the less fortunate. Our kaupapa is to identify, source and supply much-needed social services and to advocate for the more vulnerable in our community. “In June we established a community house at the Rose Madsen Cottage providing permanent premises for counselling, budgeting, employment services, training programmes and support groups. It is a venue for outside providers to offer their clinical services in Mangawhai. We also provide aroha baskets — emergency food parcels. “Sandy and I purchased the Just Cabins franchise for the Kaipara area in August, from west of the Brynderwyns up to Tane Mahuta. The business encompasses who we are and complements our interests of helping people.

“We wanted to find something to grow together that would also help others. My passion and driving force have always been in helping to empower and enhance others, giving them the tools to help themselves. I believe in supporting people to become stronger. “People need a solid home base. We need that basic rock of stability

We wanted to find something to grow together

for survival and protection. If you don’t have that, how do you move forward strongly and confidently? It is getting harder to find accommodation, and we are living in a changing environment. Children and parents are coming back home to their roots to live together. “Many have been renting, and homes are now unavailable as people need to house their own family. People that

have a little bit of money can cope, but those with less, and that doesn’t know where to start, are the hardest hit.” Donna says even a 10 or 12 square metre building can be a person’s castle. “If someone has a cabin roof over their head with carpet, power, curtains and smoke alarms, they feel safe. We offer a minimum of six months’ rental. It is a service until people no longer need it and WINZ has been amazing helping families get into a cabin as alternative accommodation. “People gain family security, and we get to share their joy when they are no longer sleeping on the floor. p Donna Flavell and her husband, Sandy Morrison have a vision to help people in the Mangawhai community and beyond to enhance their lives and have positive life experiences

My drive has always been to help provide an awareness surrounding their situation

Mangawhai, work hand in hand with Just Cabins. “Homoeopathy and Essences of D’Light help bring people’s physical, mental, emotional health into balance. The cabins give people a stable, secure foundation, and Te Whai Community Trust helps people access opportunities to make positive changes. “The common denominator is we want to empower others and share our wisdom and knowledge. People often ask what is my mahi — my work? My gift is to help awaken your essence, your vitality and empower you to move forward into a new way, that is right for you. Life is about helping others find themselves. It is about seeing things from a different perspective and shining a new light on a situation. I help people to access their own innate knowledge. I don’t want to tell people what to do. “My drive has always been to help provide an awareness surrounding their situation. Then support people to do life for themselves. This provides a foundation for them and others to grow.

“People come for homoeopathy to help with issues from a stubbed toe through to mental, emotional challenges. It is very holistic. They may feel they are repeating negative patterns, dealing with trauma, depression or anxiety. Giving people space to talk and a Homeopathic remedy helps to open their awareness to what is going on in their life. They can then move forward. When you help one person, you are helping the whole family. “My desire to help more people than just one-on-one consultations led me to create the Essences of D’Light self-awareness, selfempowerment programme. This is for both practitioners and anyone at home to use easily and confidently for themselves. “Every kingdom within nature, including trees, flowers, the ocean, earth, crystals and colour have their own energy vibration, qualities and strengths. I infuse and combine these energies into one unified remedy. There is a specific remedy for 28 different

concepts for you to choose. They help ground people to release negative energy and find calm in the eye of their storm, helping them stay strong, bringing their different strengths together — like bringing many different ingredients together for a recipe.” A book accompanies the Essences, how they are made and used. It incorporates Donna’s Maori heritage, what makes New Zealand native resources so special in healing and Rongoa Maori as well as concepts like Turangawaewae — our ‘standing tall place’ and how every one of us can find our own sense of identity. “Each essence comes with an affirmation card and key positive points that you aspire to be. Each time you say a really powerful affirmation and take a dose of your essences, it changes how you think. It strengthens you physically, mentally and emotionally. If you can feel peaceful during change, then you can move forward. Essences of D’Light are available online. “By empowering people and creating a sense of community, you give people

a sense of worth. My mother always gave me a belief in myself and a belief that I could do anything. She never tried to put a square peg in a round hole and would create a different peg and hole altogether. She always created opportunities and a different way to look at things. “Growing up in a rural community is a different way of life. My dad said you need to anticipate what is happening, what is needed now and what you may need soon to help you plan. Be fully present now. Don’t spend all your time looking at the future as that makes it hard to enjoy right now. You have to be able to be. “In order to give to others, you also have to fill yourself up and do the things you love. For us, it encourages spending time with our three children, two grandchildren and large extended family means we are never short of love, laughter and friendship. “I learn from every person I meet. If we can find a light inside of ourselves, we can use some of that to help people find the light within.” ¢

Kaipara ace sevens

13

u by Andy Bryenton

In a fast-paced tournament of seven-a-side rugby last week, two Kaipara based teams proved to be at the top of the game, beating all comers from across Northland in a series of matches, which could catch the eyes of regional and national selectors. Top honours in the women’s contest went to the Otamatea Hawks, who managed to stay ahead of a determined Kawakawa-Moerewa side at the final whistle, taking the win 24 to 17. In the men’s tournament, it was Dargaville’s Western Sharks Sevens who dominated, stretching to a 10-point margin of victory to beat Old Boys Marist (out of Whangarei) 29 to 19. The weekend engagements in Kaitaia set up the local players for a dominant next round in Whangarei. As noted, the scrutiny of local Sevens selectors is on all participants to bring some exceptional rugby to the field and secure a place in Northland’s squad. The ultimate goal, as in the game of 15, is to represent New Zealand at an international level.

Sharks coach Mark Kapa says that the level of energy and determination shown by the whole squad during eight weeks of intense training shone through to seize the win. “The team has taken this extremely seriously, and on the field, you could see the benefit of that hard work. It was a tough call to cut the squad back from the 23 players to regularlyattended training for all those weeks, but in the end, only 14 could travel to the competition. “They all put in the training, and the results were something to be proud of.” Mark, who also coaches the traditional game of 15, says he’s looking forward to seeing that same level of energy and determination across all of Kaipara rugby. ¢
