p Neil Dowie’s dream to own his own cafe has come true at the Waipū Golf Club

“I live in Te Hana and secured the chance to take over the Salt ’N’ Pepper Cafe and renamed it OceanView,” said Neil. “I have been involved in the chef and hotel management industry for many years. My chef training was in the defence force in South Africa. “I ran a large bakery with more than 300 staff in South Africa. When I moved to New Zealand, I gained an operations manager for a large catering company. I have been in Northland for five years and managed the oil refinery cafe plus six other kitchens. “I am loving doing something for myself instead of other people. It is a different challenge. Being South African, I enjoy curries and meat as well as a wide range of other products. “The New Zealand Lifestyle is what I remember of South Africa growing up. I moved to another country 13 years ago because the crime was so high in my homeland. Living in South Africa can be like living in a cage with security and alarms. “People don’t often understand that when you drive down the streets there, the houses have security wire, electric fences and alarms. We are accessing what we will offer during winter. We are also open for tournaments and functions on and off-site.” Neil is well known for his doughnuts, and another popular item is his pork belly on handmade sourdough baguettes.

Fundraising for safety u by Ann van Engelen

Mangawhai Heads Surf Club is continuing to fundraise to obtain new safety equipment to help with the rescues and water incidents the team are often involved in. “As our growing town bustled over the summer season,” says Jon Drucker, Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard Service president. “We oversaw some of the busiest days of beach activity the club has experienced in years. “The combination of calm, warm weather and the short-lived freedoms in between Covid stages saw a massive influx of visitors to Mangawhai. Fortunately, this season, we have only had a few major incidents at the beach, especially compared to last summer.” Last year, between December and January, the club attended 15 major incidents and more than 40 minor first aids and assists. “We have had a packed beach this summer, and our lifeguards concentrated

on preventative lifeguarding to keep people safe in the water. “As we lost a lot of sand at our beach from a storm last July, we now have a lot of rocks, holes, and rip currents over the beach. We move the flags when necessary and direct people out of danger when we see fit. So far, we are managing to keep people safe. “We are also focussing on continuing to fundraise for a new rescue watercraft. We have identified the need for an RWC for our most challenging rescues on the Mangawhai bar, as dozens of boats have flipped here trying to cross over the years. “A handful of surf clubs in New Zealand already have an RWC programme, and our club wants to join the ranks as we

have identified it as the best vessel for these difficult rescues.” The club began fundraising last year and still need help to obtain the craft, a beach trailer, a road trailer and a rescue sledge. “We hope to have the rescue watercraft in place for next season. We believe the craft will also help us perform safer rescues and will also help us get to incidents on other beaches like Pākiri, Te Ārai and Langs Beach more quickly. “Nationally, this summer has had one of the worst drowning rates in years, and our thoughts go out to the families and

lifeguards involved. We are fortunate to have not been in that number this summer, and remind people of the saying — ‘If in doubt, don’t go out’.” The SLSNR Regional Lifeguard Service will continue operating from 10am to 6pm until Friday, February 4 2022, and MHVLS Volunteer Lifeguard Patrols will continue to operate until Easter 2022. “We thank the community for their continued support. For more information or to help with funds for the surf lifesaving equipment, go to Mangawhai Heads Surf Club Facebook page or mangawhaisurfclub.org.nz.” ¢

Ice cream delight u by Ann van Engelen

Karen van Cingel took up the challenge to create an employment opportunity for herself and her choice is one that brings many people a moment to savor. “I grew up in Kerikeri and spent most of my adult life working in the food industry in Auckland,” said Karen. “My husband Peter and I moved to Ruakākā in 2003 as he worked at the oil refinery. I was doing consulting from home, but in 2017, my mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and I gave up work to care for her. “Our children left home in 2018, and Peter and I decided I should return to work in 2020. I applied for many positions, but Covid had hit, and I couldn’t even get an interview. “We thought maybe we would buy a job and looked at cafes, but I wasn’t comfortable with the overheads and possible staffing issues. A friend suggested I get a coffee cart, so we did the research and decided to set something up ourselves.” Peter and Karen found a retired NZ Courier van. “Peter built the interior, and I stripped the red vinyl wrap off the outside. We started trading in December 2020, going to the local beaches a few days before Christmas.

“We also started a coffee run in Bream Bay as to the best of my knowledge there wasn’t anything like that happening here. “I am fully operational off-grid and attend sports events like equestrian, rugby and fundraising bike trail rides on farms. I also do the Ruakākā races and secured the permit to trade at the Uretiti DOC campground at the beginning of summer. I buy roasted beans and blend them to my liking as I enjoy coffee on the stronger side. I source products locally when possible and employ two teenagers who live in my road to keep the money primarily in the local area. “I have also created my own iced coffee, chocolate and mocha recipes as I don’t like using pre-formulated powders. We had a lot of fun with people using alternative milks over Christmas. “Then we had a busy time with young families enjoying traditional coffees and our real fruit ice cream. “There are a lot of secrets to a good ice cream. You need the right raw materials and know the correct temperatures, so you can get the full flavour. It can’t be too warm, or the ice cream is sloppy.

p Karen van Cingel is often found at the Uretiti beach DOC campground in her Coffee n Cream van

“Having nice fresh cones is important, and I buy the best fruit I can. It is nice to have young children come up and buy their own ice cream with their adult waiting on the side. It is quite a buzz for them to tell us their order and to be treated well. “Ordering an ice cream or coffee should always be a positive experience. It is what makes memories. We have met some absolutely lovely people by having the Coffee n Cream van. It is a happy place for people to come for a treat.” ¢

Seventeen-year-old Lome Fleming began cutting hair when he was nine years old, often practising on his siblings under his father’s guidance. “I moved to Ruakākā over Christmas to help look after my grandparents,” says Lome. “I have seven siblings, and when I was young, our dad taught me to cut their hair. He isn’t a barber or anything — he just had the skill and passed it on. When I relocated here, I decided other people might like my designs. “The youngest I have worked with was a five-year-old, and the oldest was 68.

It was an honour to be chosen. “I was going to school there, but I couldn’t speak Japanese and was thrown straight into it. I learned the language by

I have enjoyed learning from them as well My grandparents allowed me to set up a salon in our garage, and I called it Lomez Home Barber Shop. “A lot of my designs are the ones my siblings liked. I can do a clean fade, taper or trim and cut hair for all ages, including any men’s style cut. I enjoy chatting to older people too and hearing about their life and their work. “My grandparents are really happy I can work from home and spend time with them. I have enjoyed learning from them as well. “I also have a job at Fresh Choice. It became a bit difficult to work around haircutting being in red light Covid restrictions, but I did my research, and

being around it on a daily basis, both at school and with my teammates. “Haircutting became my hobby there too, and I cut my teammates’ and friends’ hair, which was fun. “In the future, I plan to go back to Japan and complete my university studies and pursue rugby as a career. I want to see how far the sport can take me there. “I love being here taking care of my grandparents and living by the beach. It has been a great experience so far, and I am enjoying getting to know the locals and looking forward to meeting other people in the future when the Covid restrictions allow.” ¢

February 4 2022 THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER

Floral showstoppers u by Liz Clark

In gardens throughout New Zealand, hibiscus shrubs will be in full flower, putting on a show of tropical-like splendour. Hibiscus span the globe in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions encompassing several hundred species ranging from annuals to woody shrubs. The hibiscus flower is a frequent iconic reminder of the Pacific Islands used in Pasifika art and culture. The flowers are an intensely coloured attractant for bees and beneficial insects. If you don’t have one — be tempted to add one to your courtyard or garden. Hibiscus plants are very hardy when it comes to colder temperatures. Many varieties available at local garden centres are either deciduous or semideciduous, making them ideal for New Zealand growing conditions. One of the main species used is Hibiscus syriacus, a cold-hardy deciduous species with varying colour shades and flower forms ranging from single to double types. More commonly known by the generic name Rose of Sharon, this species thrives in pots and any sheltered garden situation. I’ve grown the mauve version of this plant in a large pot for the past five years just near the house entrance. Each year, it comes out in glorious colour. However, it hasn’t been without providing it with the right conditions to thrive. When first planting, either in a pot or directly into the garden, ensure your hibiscus has a freedraining acidic soil medium. Use a mixture of high-quality potting mix and compost with added organic matter, such as sheep pellets, to provide the right conditions for the plant’s needs. Keep well watered during the dry summer months. Soil moisture can be conserved by adding a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub — keep the truck clear. Feed your hibiscus with a monthly application of blood and bone and some citrus fertiliser to keep it healthy. Prune lightly after the flowers have faded and dropped off to encourage further flowering. Heavier pruning should be done in early spring/ summer to promote new branch growth. However, it should be no more than two-thirds of the branches, or it will kill the shrub. Overall, where pests and diseases go, hibiscus are relatively immune. However, they can be prone to infestations of scale insects, aphids and mealy bugs. There are various insecticides available to control pests, including organic options. Choose an appropriate spray to suit your preferences. Slugs and snails can also be a problem after the rain — use a non-toxic bait as a preventative measure. Some of the varieties to watch out for include Apricot Parade, Blue Thunder, Brett’s Yellow, Crown of Warringah, Full Moon, Gina Marie and Molly Cummings. Visit your local nursery or search online for availability. ¢

Mangawhai Army Cadet Unit is seeking young people ages 13–18 to take up the challenge to become the best they can be. “We want youth to learn leadership, communication, life skills, and get their fitness level up,” says Army Cadet commander Anastasia Tinsel. “Last year, we joined the Army and St John Cadets together to give our members the opportunity to learn a variety of crossover skills.” St John Cadets cater for 6–18 years old, while the Army Cadets age group is 13–18 years old. “The Army Cadets meet from 6.30pm–8pm on Wednesday evenings

“For St John, because of Covid, there are more programmes available online in case we cannot get into the unit. “We are aiming to hold at least one camp per term to help develop social skills, communication, bushcraft, first aid and other life skills. “Personal trainer Em, from Em Fit in Mangawhai, is kindly donating her time to help us with our personal fitness levels.

When youth join Army Cadets, they will go through a recruiting term to learn the basics

at the Mangawhai Army Unit on Settlement Road next to the RSA in Hakaru. “St John is from 5pm–6pm on the same night when Covid restrictions allow. “This year, we are launching a new curriculum that is more structured and engaging. “When youth join Army Cadets, they will go through a recruiting term to learn the basics. They then attend a boot camp and finish with a parade as they become an official cadet.

p Anastasia Tinsel, Army Cadet commander, is calling for youth to take up the challenge to learn life skills

“We will also have drone workshops and casualty evacuation training. We want to present real-life scenarios to make emergency situations you may come across at any moment of a day less scary. “We hope to add surf lifesaving skills into the programme and complete the two boat projects we are working on that were donated last year with the hope to use them before the end of summer. “We encourage young people to come along. We see our members

build confidence and gain social skills as they let go of some of the hardships they have. “A lot of them are facing their own fears. I am sure some of the new recruits will get a shock when they start going through the programme. Suddenly, they are depending on themselves to do things such as keeping their bunk and rooms tidy at camp. “They iron their own uniform and repair any problems and polish their

own shoes. What they do within the classroom is designed to give them independence and confidence to take steps outside of their environment. “They are encouraged to step up knowing it is scary but realising they will only fail if they don’t try. “The next recruitment is set to kick off on Wednesday, February 9. People can contact us through the Mangawhai Cadet Unit Facebook page for more information.” ¢

Chunky Choc Oat biscuits

u by Deb Wright

A very quick and easy recipe great for the lunch boxes or cake stalls. You can substitute with raw sugar, which makes them a little chewy to the bite. Feel free to double the recipe, so you use the full can of condensed milk. INGREDIENTS 250g butter (softened) 3 tbsp sweetened condensed milk ¾ cup sugar 1½ cups flour 1½ cups rolled oats 1 tsp baking powder 200g milk chocolate (roughly chopped or buttons)

METHOD Preheat the oven to 160C. Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Beat butter, condensed milk and sugar together until pale and creamy. Add remaining ingredients and stir until combined. Place tablespoonfuls of the mixture into balls and place on the prepared trays. Flatten slightly. Bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown. Leave on the trays for five minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container. ¢

p Brian Baker recently released his new song, Everywhere You Go, as a result of missing his family while in managed isolation quarantine

A Kaipara sensation u by Ann van Engelen

Although Brian Baker has travelled the world through his musical career, he always felt Northland was his spiritual home and now creates his world-renowned music in Kaipara. “I recently released my latest song — Everywhere You Go,” says Brian. “I went to high school in Whangārei and moved to Australia to chase a music career 40 years ago. One of the biggest opportunities that came my way was to work with Eddie Rayner, the genius of Split Enz.” Brian met Eddie when Eddie produced a single for a band he was in. “After the project, Eddie asked if I would help him do a movie called Rikky and Pete. Our music was a big success.

my industry knowledge. We released two CDs through Warner, East West label, including the hit single and video Big Picture. Together with drummer Michael Barker, we toured Australia and New Zealand with the B-52s. “We also toured in our own right and did a bunch of singles and videos as well, all from Melbourne, Australia, until Eddie returned to New Zealand. I continued to live and work in Australia and produced music for myself and helped other artists.

“I play bass, drums, keyboards and guitar. I practise guitar a lot, sing and write songs, which is my passion. I study songwriting avidly and take and attend seminars. “All of these things are very important to me, and I think my commitment is reflected in my music and hope others can hear that in how well constructed my songs are. “Everywhere You Go, is a song about missing your loved ones. I came up with it while missing my children and

Music is in my blood. My uncle Ronald Baker was pretty big in the Big Band scene in the 1940s and 1950s We continued working together and created an act called The Makers. “The Makers did really well and got a record deal with Warner Music. Eddie and I also worked with Hugh Baigent from London. Hugh is famous for Phil Collins In the Air Tonight and Stings The Dream of the Blue Turtles. Hugh produced all of Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel’s music. “Sitting in the studio next to Hugh and Eddie were experiences that catapulted

“In December 2020, I decided to come home, and my partner Kat and I bought a beautiful 10-acre property in Paparoa. It is a permaculture farm, and we have Maggie, our dog, four ducks, three geese, two chickens, and we are about to adopt our friend Kate’s goat. “We set up a studio here in a 40ft container and called it The Bakery. We produce our own work and help other people with their music.

partner when I was in managed isolation and quarantine in December, and it grew. “It is a topic that is very relatable and was brought about by these really unfortunate Covid times. Everywhere you go talks about holding our loved ones in our hearts even if we can not hold them in our arms. “The whole project kicked up a notch when my neighbour Julie Edwards offered help. Julie is a theatre

p Maggie the dog is often at Brian's side when he is working on his music

I can remember listening to popular songs on the radio when I was seven years old and being able to put the music together and make bits and pieces director with 35 years of experience working on major productions and movies. “When I met Julie, I suggested we produce a video as I release a new single every six weeks on my website brianbaker.nz, and I thought Julie could help me. “Before I knew it, Julie had pulled in a bunch of wonderful people from the area.” Fred Renata is one person Julie enlisted. “Fred produced the movie Utu and many other well-known movies. Fred is in great demand in New Zealand and Australia as a cinematographer and it was an honour to have his help. “David Gunson also joined us. He is a storyboard artist with a very good reputation. David was very instrumental and put what was in our heads down on to paper. “Other people like Kate Hawley turned up and did the wardrobe and costume design. I didn’t realise how important that was for doing a video. “Kate had just finished the Lord of the Rings TV series and is now off to Prague for work. She was so inspiring,

and she gave us all sorts of information and advice. “Rose Pickard is the young woman in the film clip. She is Julie’s daughter and is a very good actress. “It was a local gathering of talented people networking together. It was very interesting, and now the seeds have been planted for a talented, creative production in the future. “Music is in my blood. My uncle Ronald Baker was pretty big in the Big Band scene in the 1940s and 1950s. He played in the Royal Albert Hall in London, and during the war years, he was a big band leader. “I can remember listening to popular songs on the radio when I was seven years old and being able to put the music together and make bits and pieces. “Music has essentially filled my life, from composing for movies and writing advertising jingles. I have done nearly everything you can possibly imagine, in every style you can imagine. “Returning to New Zealand was a good thing. Living here really feels like I have come home. I love the climate, trees and the natural surroundings, but more than that, I am blown away by the

people. There are so many inspirational creatives here in Kaipara on all sorts of levels. “We see Kate, who has taken over a 22-hectare sheep farm, and she still flies around the world doing her movies. “Organic dairy farmers have shown me there is a whole new wave of farming. Every time you turn a corner, there is something else — people are doing really inspirational things. “There are so many creative people in places like Mangawhai, Waipū, Kaiwaka, Wellsford and the Ruakākā area doing wonderful things. I was amazed when I saw how far Waipū had come when I visited a few years ago before we moved back. “I was going to stay with my dad’s brother in Hikurangi and stopped for a pie. I was surprised to find a vegan cafe and watch a lady charge her electric car. It was really different from when I was at school 40 years ago. “Everywhere You Go comes from the heart. I miss my two boys who are still in Melbourne. They were meant to get over in the school holidays, but like so many other families, we don’t know when they can get here now.

“I have a daughter and grandson in Wellington, and with these times, it is all a little harder to see our loved ones. Those are the kind of things that made this song for me. “If you have loved ones you want to send them a song, this is the video clip to send. I loved making it. It is what I do and what I love. The drums were recorded in Melbourne by Kane Watts, but everything else was created here at The Bakery. “All the acoustic and electric guitars, bass, and vocals are mastered to perfection to go off across the world. We have well over 50,000 streams on Spotify, and that is growing daily. “It is such a timely song. I am working really hard to get it out there. It has also been added to the Air New Zealand inflight playlist. “We have met some wonderful people here in Kaipara — it has been so good. I am a very lucky guy with a beautiful property and a wonderful partner. “Like everybody, there are some hard bits, but I practise my guitar, grow the vegetables and water the gardens, look after the animals and create music. That is pretty lucky.” ¢

Preparing for school u by Ann van Engelen

Schools are preparing for a tumultuous start to the school year, warning children in poverty will be missing from classrooms as families struggle with both back-to-school costs and the impact of Omicron. “The impact of Omicron means for many students this will be the toughest start to the year yet,” says KidsCan CEO and founder Julie Chapman. KidsCan aims to ease the burden on children, families and schools by taking care of essentials including breakfast, snacks, hot meals, jackets, shoes and health items. “Families are having to make heartbreaking choices, like whether to equip

so children start the year with the same opportunity to succeed as anyone else. “Staff in nearly 200 schools and early childhood centres supported by KidsCan have shared heart-breaking stories of the choices some families are forced to make at the start of the school year. “This year is expected to be the toughest year as the Covid-19 pandemic enters its third year. One principal wrote that Covid-19 has impacted on many of

Teachers are also shouldering back-to-school costs, so students don’t miss the start of the year their children with the tools they need for learning or buy enough food. Students are starting school with a sense of shame that they do not have the right uniform or stationery, and they don’t want to go. “Teachers are doing all they can to ease the burden, but they can’t do it alone. We need help to support schools,

our families’ ability to provide adequately for their children. “There has been a marked increase in families needing support in the form of food parcels and food vouchers.” Teachers surveyed say parents are going hungry to pay for uniforms, siblings are sharing a bus pass meaning only one can attend each day. Students are staying home due to the shame of not having the correct supplies. “A teacher reported that one family paid for their uniforms then had no money for power and food. “Schools are particularly concerned the number of students returning this year will drop dramatically, as they have taken jobs to help their families survive. Many said students had spent last year’s lockdown in substandard, overcrowded homes without access to a device or the Internet. “The anxiety and stress levels are now taking their toll on perseverance and engagement. “Teachers are also shouldering back-to-school costs, so students don’t
