January 14 2022

Looking back 2022 is underway, and The Weekend Lifestyler this week is a reflection on what has happened in 2021. We’ve chosen some little bites to remind us all of what has been happening. There was so much to look back on, and despite the interruptions of lockdowns, everyone has kept going and achieved some remarkable things. 2022 will be bigger and brighter!

A love of vintage Annette Vuletich’s love for designing children’s clothes began as a child watching her mother sew. Annette began making her own creations to dress her children and grandchildren, naming her business Lula Upcycled Designs after her granddaughter Lucila. People visiting the Mangawhai Community Market have been able to see first-hand how vintage fabrics, tablecloths and

doilies can be made into children’s clothing, including flower girl dresses to give every child a unique outfit. She also gives children like Kaylee and Isla the opportunity to model her clothing, giving them valuable experience in front of the camera. Annette says she loves turning old items into new, and believes everyone should do something every day that brings them joy as that is an important part of life.

Honouring a life well lived. At Morris & Morris our focus has always been at providing a funeral that honours the life of the loved one that has passed away. It is important to us that we keep providing our community with the ability to say goodbye in a manner that is representative of the loved one that has passed away.

As qualified Funeral Directors we know that not having a proper goodbye can have severe implications for the family members who are left behind. Giving family members the opportunity to honour the life that was lived, not only encourages but delivers on healthy grieving.

p Integrity Community Media’s Deb Wright has a positive plan for the forthcoming year and invites the community to get the most from their homegrown news media

“Welcome back to our readers, advertisers and staff. I hope those who have had a break have been able to relax and recharge. Special thanks to all of those who worked through to ensure that we had essential services on-call and were able to present our best image and a warm welcome to guests. “The year 2022 for The Weekend Lifestyler is set to be one of building on our strengths. We’re always looking to better ourselves. It is why we’re always looking for more community content, ways to help the business community, and ways to assist our clubs, sports teams and charitable groups. “The Weekend Lifestyler team is one of which I’m exceptionally proud. Everyone works hard to achieve great outcomes, in terms of interesting articles, up to

date local content and a clear, locallyfocussed voice for our advertisers. I may be a little bit biased in this one regard, but I think our team rocks! “We aim to make 2022 a year of movement, growth and positivity for us and those around us. That means ignoring the doomsayers and negativity prevalent on social media and asking what we can do for ourselves and each other. “It’s time to meet your neighbours face to face, talk to each other, support local, get involved. If there’s a way we, through The Weekend Lifestyler or any of our publications, can help with this, please don’t hesitate to call us. We’re here to help you and let your stories inspire others. Let’s make 2022 a year of community together.” ¢

The brainchild of Julie Chapman, founder and CEO of children’s charity KidsCan, the organisation partnered with Women’s Refuge, Shine, and Shakti to assist pets via referrals. “Sadly, Pet Refuge is desperately needed. We have horrifying rates of family violence in New Zealand, and pets often bear the brunt of that,” says Julie.

“Women escaping family violence are usually unable to take their pets with them to safe houses. We transport small animals from around New Zealand to the shelter and have a national network of safe farms to care for larger farm animals.” To donate or get help — go to petrefuge. org.nz or call 0800 Pet Refuge. ¢

p Dave Brown and Debi Walters-Brown are excited to present concerts for a variety of audiences this summer

Summer concerts set  by Ann van Engelen

Dave Brown and Debi Walters-Brown have been preparing for Classics at the Cove at Tahamoana Angora Goat Farm, Waipū, during the summer period, with several concerts lined up. “Organising events has been pretty precarious this year, but we are not deterred, and Dave has the property looking better than ever,” says Wendy. “Like everyone else in the entertainment sector, we want to support local musicians and get them an audience. Last year, we hosted a band that was able to perform for the first time in 10 months — it was so encouraging for them. “We enjoy helping talent of all ages, including the young, to give them a chance to perform in front of an appreciative crowd.” Tauraroa Area School band is lined up with teachers, students and the principal performing. “All the concerts are daytime shows. Waipū Waves and Rock n Rods is

organised by Borderline Events, which is exciting. “Waipū Waves is like a Summer Reggae event. Rock n Rods on Waitangi Weekend is sponsored by McLeod’s Brewery here in Waipū and will go late into the night. Rock n Rods usually coincides with the Waipū Car and Bike Show hosted by the Waipū Lions Club. However, this year the car and bike show has been postponed until April 3. “It was decided that we would postpone the show due to the uncertainty surrounding Covid restrictions,” says Lions president Malcolm Norton. “The decision was difficult to make and discussed for some time before we voted on it.” Dave and Debi say they love music and sharing their property to give

musicians of all types a beautiful palace to perform. “Dave has enhanced the terrace seating and built the stage into the ground, and we also have our ablution block,” says Debi. “We love giving the locals the opportunity to come and see good quality music locally, so they don’t have to travel outside the area. We are right here by the beach. “There will be security, first aid, food vendors on-site, and you can bring a picnic to enjoy together. We recommend people book through Eventfinda for

the concerts they want to come to. Having the vaccine pass to attend is a government rule we can’t get away from. When booking your ticket, you will be required to show your Covid vaccination passport, and that will be directly transferred to your ticket, which will be scanned at the gate. “Waipū Waves is set for January 22, the Jazz Picnic is January 30, Rock n Rods is on February 6 and Classics at the Cove is set for April 30. “Check out Eventfinda for concerts and events in the Whangārei/Waipū region and get your tickets.” ¢ As seen on Grand Designs 2019

A celebration of aroha

Creating decadent chocolate by hand in Pahi with a view of the Kaipara Harbour is a passion for Tatiana White.

Mangawhai Movies cinema hosted the James and Isey movie in December, celebrating New Zealand’s newest movie sensations.

Tatiana is a chef and came to New Zealand from Russia 18 years ago to give her daughter a better life. “I lived in Auckland and attended professional chocolate making classes,” says Tatiana. “I began experimenting with different flavours and ideas and was giving my creations away to family

Isey turned 100 years old, and her son James had never met any other Māori person who had turned 100, so decided to document her life the week leading up to the celebrations. “We are virtually unknown, and the movie is Māori telling a Māori story and my take on who we are,” says James.

and friends. I now create Dekadenz Chocolates. Every single step of each chocolate is made by hand, and I think about each flavour and come up with a design. It has taken years of practice to get my recipes precise, and it excites me to see people’s faces when they taste my products.” ¢

“Mum is really proud of the movie. The old church cinema in the historic village is a beautiful setting. “The film is all about my mum — she is the boss and star while I am the accessory. Isey says her secret to a long life is aroha and a sip of Jim Beam.” ¢

Life at a Madison’s boutique vineyard Good Baby series Ray and Nicky Crocker never imagined they would own a vineyard in Kaipara and become breeders of grapes and boutique wine producers.

At ten years old, Northland Rescue Helicopter ambassador Madison Macmillan has donated $1,100 to the chopper service from the sale of her Good Baby children's book series.

They had holidayed in Mangawhai for 30 years. After returning from living in Australia, they purchased Brooke Lane Vineyard, which happened to have 1,800 established grapevines originally planted by Gary and Liz Cameron of Lochiel Estate. “We were going to buy a motorhome and travel around the country and pay

Madison published her first book in 2018 at seven years old called The Good Baby and The Bad Hippo, which she wrote on her way home from school one day. “When I was in year two, my teacher read a book about a Bad Baby and a Good Hippo, and it inspired me,” says Madison. “I came up with the Good

Baby idea on the way home from school. I donate money from my book sales to the Northland Rescue Chopper so they can buy things they need to rescue people. Living on a farm, I know the chopper can get to remote places easier and faster than ambulances, and they can drop a person down on a harness to help if need be.” ¢

A knitter’s paradise

Valuing life’s memories

Glennie van Prehn has turned knitting into a career since moving to Waipū nine years ago with her husband, Eddie.

Based in Bream Bay, Kirsty Joy Halliday uses her photography skills to capture irreplaceable memories for families that come across her path.

At nine years old, Glennie's mum and nana taught her to knit, and she now focusses on baby and toddler clothes, which she sells at the Waipū Boutique Sunday Market. “It fascinated me that you could create something with a bit of wool and some needles,” she says.

Kirsty uses the local beach and forest to capture precious moments for her clients. “I got my first camera when my first son was born eight years ago. I loved taking photos of him, and a short time after I did a family shoot with my dad — he unexpectedly died. Those photos were the only professional images I

“When we moved here, I started knitting pure and merino wool baby items because pure wool is best for babies. It keeps you warmer when you are cold and cooler when you are hot. “I knit for up to six hours a day and love planning which colours and buttons go together.” ¢

THE WEEKEND LIFESTYLER January 14 2022

In 2022, parents and caregivers will be able to get their 5 to 11-year-olds immunised against COVID-19 Some tamariki get very ill from catching COVID-19 and immunisation is one of the best ways to protect them.

Safety of the COVID-19 vaccine

Immunisation is an important way we keep tamariki safe, like being sun smart or wearing a seatbelt.

The child (paediatric) Pfizer vaccine has gone through the same rigorous approval process as other routine childhood immunisations. No clinical trials were skipped and no corners were cut in the testing of its safety.

It protects your tamariki from many serious diseases and stops disease spreading within your whānau and the community. In Aotearoa, tamariki get free vaccinations against 12 diseases, including whooping cough (pertussis), measles and polio.

The Pfizer vaccine for 5 to 11-year-olds has been through clinical trials with children in this age group. In general, the side effects that were reported were mild, didn’t last long, and were similar to side effects from other routine immunisations.

Take time this summer to get the information and advice you need to make the best decision for your tamariki. Ukulele’s magical Mondays

Based at Mangawhai’s Rākaunui Art Village, Britta Conrad focusses on her harakeke weaving, which she became intrigued with when she saw items on display at a market years ago.

For three years Miguel Hamber and the Fourin Abar band members have been helping people learn to play the ukulele.

Growing up in Germany, Britta thought living in an English speaking country would make it easier to learn the language. “I came to New Zealand and loved it here and gained residency 30 years ago,” says Britta. “One day, I visited the Titirangi market and

Adventuring with fantasy Choose patrolled beaches Artist Evan Heasman appreciates the friendliness of Waipū township and the inspiring atmosphere that comes with it as he creates his anime-style artworks.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand is encouraging people to take extra care when they head to the beach, with record numbers of rescues taking place before the holiday season had started.

“I would draw for hours when I was a child,” says Evan. “Twelve years ago, I began drawing and developing the anime style, which I have today. Anime is like Japanese animation. The theme of my work is fantasy or classic fairy tales as I love the Brothers Grimm, classic fairy tales,

“We want people to enjoy a great summer, but we also want you to get home from the beach safely. Everyone visiting the beach this summer should take note of these safety messages. The best way to stay safe is to choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the flags.” ¢

Enabling beach access Two beach wheelchairs are available for use at Waipū Cove, enabling wheelchair users access to the sand and the sea. “Having beach wheels is about making the beach more accessible for all people with limited mobility or wheelchair users so they can get on the sand and in the water,” says Waipū Surf Life Saving Club captain Kath Manning. “The Waipū Cove Reserve board, along with Camp Waipū Cove, have created concrete paths from the surf life saving club to the boat ramp to make access easier too.

“The beach wheels will be free to borrow over summer for all ability use while surf lifeguards are on patrol. They are not self-propelled but are easy to push on the sand and fun to use in the water. “We are all excited to help people and hope to see our beach wheels getting a lot of use between the flags at Waipū Cove.” ¢

A colourful arrangement Reflecting on her love of flowers, Liz French shared her enjoyment of creating floral arrangements with thought and care to suit every occasion. When Liz and her husband lived in Brisbane, Australia, in the early 1990s, she completed a floristry course. Upon their return to New Zealand, she saw the opportunity for a florist in Waipū as no one was selling flowers at that point. “I love working with flowers as they are beautiful works of art in

themselves. They allow creativity on a very personal level with their own message. They provide joy, comfort and love when they are given in times of sadness. When celebrating the birth of a baby, an anniversary or another happy occasion, they add to the joy,” said Liz. ¢

Surf lifesavers acknowledged

Golfers support Cancer Society

Local surf lifesavers were acknowledged for their commitment to helping keep beachgoers safe across the country at the 2021 Surf Life Saving National Awards of Excellence.

Calvin Thomas, Craig Palmer and Nira Kingi teamed up in The Longest Day Golf Challenge to raise money for the Cancer Society.

Tania Ahrens from the Ruakākā Surf Life Saving Club received the national award Surf Official of the Year from Michelle Newton, representing the SLS Northern Region. Tania has helped at SLS Kariotahi for a few seasons due to a shortage in numbers. She has officiated at various regional competitions with her can-do attitude,” said Surf Life Saving chief executive Paul Dalton.

Having experienced the trauma of cancer in various ways, the trio joined forces to raise thousands of dollars alongside like-minded Northlanders. “We have all benefitted from the support of the Cancer Society over many years, so we are willing to do anything to give back and help others,” says Calvin. “The Longest Day is a golfing endurance event where

“Waipū Cove Surf Life Saving members Laurie Bell, Ian Godfrey and Dave Woodman received 50 Year Support Medals acknowledging their 50 years of service to surf life saving. “Mangawhai Heads, Waipū Cove and Ruakākā surf life saving clubs are three very busy clubs. They are iconic and very popular areas, which lead to very busy beaches.” ¢

participants play four rounds of golf, the equivalent of walking a marathon while putting golfing skills, stamina and patience to the test. “People can choose the day and the location that suits them. The longest day of the year is December 22, but it can be played any day in December or January.“ To donate to Calvin, Craig and Nira visit longestday.org.nz/t/northlandgcs. ¢
